ily and having lots of resources such as wide open spaces to offer, we didn’t hesitate to say yes,” Guichon said. “I know that we gave these children a great home, and as a mother I worked to take care of them. “What I never knew is how much they would take care of me. You see, when my children were 20, 16, 15 and 13, we lost their father in an accident. “For a short time after the accident, we were all in survival mode. To say that I would not have endured without my children is not overstating the case.” Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux and Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen TurpelLafond issued a joint statement, noting that 1,300 adoption placements have been found in the past five years. But there are 1,000 more children and teens who are still waiting. “The reality is that many of the young people in carre who are waiting for adoption are school age,” they said. “They may be siblings who need to stay together. Some may have special placement needs due to difficult early childhood experiences, prenatal exposure to alcohol or drugs, learning delays or other developmental challenges.” Cadieux launched a social media campaign for November to promote adoption, including a website at www.1000familiesbc. com with adoptive family profiles and videos.

Hot gases spew from the legislature B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher The climate debate, which all left-thinking people insist is over, has erupted in the B.C. legislature over our nascent liquefied natural gas industry. Chilliwack-Hope B.C. Liberal MLA Laurie Throness heated things up by announcing that he’s “agnostic” on the subject of humancaused global warming. The religious terminology is intentional, he said, because this is how climate change is currently discussed – deniers, believers and so on. Throness mentioned the inflated elephant in the room, 18 years with little or no average global surface temperature rise, even as greenhouse gas emissions keep rising around the world. Needless to say, Green
Party MLA and climate scientist Andrew Weaver was aghast at this heresy. And NDP MLAs lined up behind former Sierra Club high priest George Heyman to ridicule Throness, inadvertently proving his point about their rather nasty religious zeal. I’m also skeptical on global warming, as regular readers will know, and so are many voting adults in Canada and elsewhere. And I agree with Throness’ main point that B.C. shouldn’t sacrifice its energy economy while the jury is still out. Most politicians who presume to decide the fate of this vital and threatened industry have at best visited a well or plant site, and media information about the industry is often from questionable protest-

want lower taxes, we need a broader business tax base. With new and prosperous business we will have sustainable jobs for our children. We can afford to grow our community with better roads and sidewalks, and support community organizations for a dynamic and vibrant Cranbrook. To achieve this we need to build a positive working relationship between the City and our business community. Additionally, Council needs to scrutinize how we are spending our tax dollars responsibly to prevent unnecessary tax increases. Cranbrook has been

ers. So today I’d like to provide some background on the natural gas industry, as someone who grew up with it and worked in it in northeastern B.C. Natural gas is mostly methane, the main ingredient in farts. It is many times more potent than carbon dioxide as a heat-trapping gas in the atmosphere, which is one reason it is often flared rather than vented if it isn’t captured for use as fuel. Raw natural gas may contain carbon dioxide, a key plant food and component of exhaled breath that has been rebranded as pollution. Gas from the Horn River Basin, one of B.C.’s largest deep shale formations, contains 10 per cent or more CO2, more than conventional gas. B.C.’s most lucrative gas field is the Montney shale around Fort St. John, which contains nearly CO2-free gas as well as light petroleum liquids.
(This is similar to the Bakken shale in North Dakota, where American roughnecks continue to burn off vast amounts of gas to get at the more valuable light liquids. Oddly, President Barack Obama and former Canadian singer Neil Young don’t notice this.) Weaver and the NDP are correct in their main objection, which is that the B.C. government’s new limits on CO2 from LNG production are a sham. As much as 70 per cent of the total greenhouse gas emissions from the gas industry occur before the LNG stage, which is the only thing the new rules regulate. CO2 that comes up with gas is extracted and vented. A government-subsidized pilot project to capture and store CO2 at Spectra Energy’s operations at Fort Nelson seems to be going nowhere. Restricting LNG-related emissions is mostly a cosmetic gesture.
home to Joanna and me for 25 years. During this time, we have raised two wonderful children, Laura and David. I have volunteered in their school and club activities. With my long-term community involvement with Kinsmen and now Rotary, I am addressing our community’s greatest needs through leading special projects, fundraising, collaborating with community agencies, and providing leadership on our Executive Boards. As the Health Inspector, I work with local businesses and the City to make Cranbrook a safe and healthy community concerning drinking water quality, restaurant food safety, and emergency environmental disaster man-
agement. As manager of the Kootenay region, I demonstrate leadership, strategic planning, budgeting, and labour relation skills. I know how government works and how to achieve success. I have a broad perspective of what is Cranbrook and will work collaboratively with Council so we can remain the Key City of the Kootenays. Let me use my skills and experience to work for you on City Council. Vote for Ron Popoff.

Environment Minister Mary Polak correctly notes that gas producers pay carbon tax. Yes, but only on the fuel they use, not “process emissions” such as flaring. Big LNG proponents plan to burn more gas to compress and cool LNG, and their greenhouse gas emissions beyond a certain limit will force them to buy carbon offsets or pay into a technology fund. If LNG investment isn’t scared away by protests and piled-on taxes, it surely means B.C.’s greenhouse gas reduction targets are history. The question now is how much that actually matters. Letter: Candidates misleading voters I attended the all candidates forum on wednesday, 0ctober 29th and some comments made by Wayne Stetski and Sharon Cross warrant a response. Both of these individuals, when listing their accomplishments, implied that they had created the downtown tax releif zone for new builds and renovations. Both of these individuals are misleading the public and wrong in their statements. The downtown tax relief zone and strategy are products of the previous mayor and council. The concept and the actual bylaw was in place before they were elected. Mr. Stetski, in his summary of accomplishments implied that the award winning design and construction of our waste water, spray irrigation field system was
somehow part of his accomplishments. The irony here is that Mr. Stetskis’ last campaign went to great lengths to discredit the entire project. His only involvement was that after the election, he travelled east to receive the award for the city. The redesign and upgrade to our spray irrigation system was the result of Mayor Manjak, the previous council, our MLA Mr. Bennett, our MP Mr. Wilks and most importantly our dedicated staff lead by our engineer, Jamie Hodge. Transparency is extremely important but without facts, the image is blurred. Please vote on November 15th. ~Jim Wavrecan

Government reaches agreement with doctors Submitted
The Ministry of Health and Doctors of BC have reached a tentative agreement that respects government’s bargaining mandate and addresses key health-care issues facing British Columbians. “I’d like to thank Doctors of BC for coming to the table and negotiating an agreement that addresses important health-care issues facing B.C. families while meeting government’s need to be fiscally responsible with taxpayer dollars,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “Over the past year, we have worked hard with doctors in this province to collaborate on strategies that improve physician services for patients and this agreement continues this work.” The new agreement includes provisions to help address some of B.C.’s most pressing health-care challenges, as identified in the ministry’s strategic plan, Setting Priorities for the BC Health Care System. Funding from the agreement will target: improving access to primary care; increasing healthcare services in rural and remote communities; and continuing to recruit and retain both family physicians and specialists. “In this challenging economic time and in a tough bargaining environment, we have successfully negotiated a strong tentative agreement that is a good deal for our patients and for doctors,” said Dr. Bill Cavers, president of Doctors of BC. “The settlement provides targeted funding to improve services we provide to patients, as well as funding to cover rising physician overhead costs. It also includes a first-of-its kind initiative that will see better engagement between doctors in hospitals and other facilities with administrators. This will promote innovation and help to build a stronger healthcare system.” “This long-term agreement provides fiscal certainty within today’s economic reality, helping government manage health-care costs while continuing to achieve better health outcomes for patients,” Finance Minister
Michael de Jong said. The proposed fiveyear agreement runs until March 31, 2019,
and covers approximately 10,000 specialists and family physicians in the province.
Over the coming weeks, Doctors of BC will work toward ratifying this agreement
with their membership. Ratification is expected to conclude in early December.

Amaryllis
1. The Other Christmas Flower. With their tall stalk, topped off with an amazing flower, the amaryllis is a spectacular focal point in any holiday decoration and besides the poinsettia the plant most closely associated with the Christmas season. It makes an ideal present, from the surprise for a real plant lover to a thoughtful hostess gift that keeps on giving. 2. Why are we Talking Holidays? It is merely days after Halloween, so why are we talking amaryllis bulbs? There is a rule of thumb - if you want to have your amaryllis in bloom for Christmas, you must remember to plant the bulb by Remembrance Day. There are exceptions to the rule with some varieties that require less time to reach maturity. 3. Bang for your Buck. The amaryllis bulb is a real marvel, because no other plant delivers such spectacular blooms with so little effort - any time you need a little colour boost in the cooler months. Sometimes our winters can seem a bit long and dreary - watching a plant grow daily and produce beautiful blooms can make it just a little more tolerable. 4. A Sparkler with a Long History. Amaryllis means "to sparkle" in Greek. The name was derived from a shepherdess in a poem by the Roman poet Virgil. The scientific name Hippeastrum, Greek for "horseman's star," was selected in the 1800s by the Dean of Manchester. 5. The Origin of Awesome. Amaryllis are a native of South America where they still grow in the wild in many areas. They have been cultivated since the early 1800’s. Back then, amaryllis bulbs were extremely costly and only available in fire engine red. Today, growers from as far away as Australia, Israel and India keep developing new varieties in many sizes, styles and shapes and colours range from tangerine to pale green. 6. Don’t Give Them Wet Feet! Whatever type of amaryllis bulb you chose, they are extremely easy to grow. Plant the bulbs in late fall or early winter in a pot with the top third of the bulb above the soil's surface. Bulbs hate to be soggy, so ensure you use good potting soil with proper drainage and a pot that has good drainage as well. 7. Not Much Room at the Inn. Amaryllis bulbs like it crowded, so choose a pot that is only an inch or two bigger than the bulb. Heavier clay or ceramic pots are preferable as the extra weight can act as a counterpart to the often somewhat top-heavy plants. Amaryllis bulbs also get bigger as they get older, so you will need to re-pot them every couple of years to accommodate for the growth. 8. Give them Love and Light. Place the amaryllis plant in a well lit area and water occasionally. Growth can be regulated to some degree by temperature. If your plant is growing too quickly and you want it blooming for Christmas, placing it in a cool spare room or cold room will slow it down. If you want to speed it up, then a warmer room or on top of the fridge may help your cause. 9. Let Them Live. Amaryllis bloom a long time - after the last flower has faded and the stalk dies back, allow the leaves to grow normally. Once there is no more fear of frost, put the pot outdoors in a semi-shaded area - strong, direct sunlight could scorch the leaves. Fertilize monthly with a well balanced water soluble fertilizer throughout the summer. 10. The Second (and Third, and Fourth,...) Life of the Amaryllis. In late September, stop fertilizing and watering your amaryllis plant. Once the leaves begin to turn yellow and become floppy, cut them back and bring the pot indoors to store it in a cool room. Do not allow it to freeze and do not water it. After about two months, bring the amaryllis out into a warm, well lit area. Begin watering it once new shoots appear. Now your amaryllis should be ready to do its thing for you all over again.

The grand opening of the Aboriginal Gathering Place at the College of the Rockies ocurred recently. attending College of the Rockies. In a sunrise ceremony prior to the official grand opening, Ktunaxa Elder Herman Alpine provided a blessing for the building. The Aboriginal Gathering Place holds a particularly special significance for Alpine as he and his family once lived where the Gathering Place now sits. Speakers at the event included College of the Rockies Board of Governors’ Chair Dave Handy, Minister Bill Bennett, Kathryn Teneese and Gwen Phillips from the Ktunaxa Nation as well as Marilyn Taylor from the Metis Nation. “This new building reaffirms the Ktunaxa Nation’s and College of the Rockies’ commitment to supporting and enhancing Aboriginal education in Ktunaxa territory. This close collaboration has resulted in this beautiful new space where students from all over the world
can learn and share in a supportive and inclusive environment,” explains Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Chair. Students from College of the Rockies’ construction trades programs participated in the building of the Gathering Place, which received funding from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Columbia Basin Trust. Additional funds were provided by Teck Resources and the Ktunaxa Nation. Energy and Mines Minister and East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett notes, “By offering a gathering place, College of the Rockies is helping Aboriginal students feel welcome and supported in an environment for success in post-secondary education. The college plays an important role in the community that is further enhanced by this welcoming gathering place.” Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk adds, “Recruiting and
retaining Aboriginal students is critical in helping them succeed in their personal and professional lives. Our government’s funding of this gathering place ensures students have the support and environment they need. We know that when we support Aboriginal students in post-secondary, they are more likely to complete their studies and move on to good jobs.” College of the Rockies’ President and CEO David Walls says, “The Gathering Place will acknowledge our special relationship with the Ktunaxa Nation and be a place of welcome for all people within the College community and beyond. We couldn’t be happier to see the doors of this beautiful building officially open.” The Aboriginal Gathering Place will be open for public viewing on November 5th from 1 – 4 p.m.

Beware of BC Hydro scam Fraudsters posing as BC Hydro employees continue to contact customers across British Columbia by telephone in an attempt to steal money from residents and small businesses – particularly restaurants. BC Hydro initially warned customers of the scam in early September. Since then, more customers have come forward with additional details. According to reports, the fraudulent calls may come from a 1-800 phone number. The customer’s call display may show BC Hydro or display a legit-
imate BC Hydro phone number. This is done through “spoofing.” The caller demands immediate payment to avoid disconnection and suggests the customer purchase a cash gift card and call back to provide the serial number on the back of the card. BC Hydro is reminding customers that it does not collect credit card or bank account information over the telephone and BC Hydro does not take payment from cash gift cards. Customers are also reminded that if they receive a call from someone repre-
senting BC Hydro and they doubt the authenticity of the call, they should hang up and call back BC Hydro at 1-800-BCHYDRO or 1-800-224-9376. If an account is in arrears, BC Hydro will send several notices through the mail asking for payment and also use an automated dialer to remind customers to make a payment before electricity supply is impacted. Customers can check their account status online through bchydro.com.
MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION NOTICE FOR REFUSE PERMIT UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT ACT FOR TECK LINE CREEK OPERATIONS Teck Coal Limited (Teck) has filed with the Ministry of Environment an application for a refuse permit under the provisions of the Environmental Management Act. The permit would authorize Teck to discharge refuse to a landfill facility located at Teck’s Line Creek Operations (approximately 25 kilometres north of Sparwood, B.C.). The refuse would consist of nonhazardous dewatered solid residuals generated from the existing West Line Creek Selenium Active Water Treatment Facility (AWTF) at the Line Creek Operations. The solid residuals are a combination of biological and ferric (iron related) solid waste byproducts generated through the selenium removal process of the AWTF. Teck proposes to dispose of these residuals through a non-hazardous landfill operation, which would include a 2.5 ha landfill, engineered lined landfill cells with a dual liner consisting of a geosynthetic clay layer and a 1.5 mm high density polyethylene layer, a leachate management system, surface water diversion ditches, a groundwater diversion system, and related appurtenances. The landfill, at full build out, is proposed to consist of two individual cells separated by a central crest berm. The landfill is proposed to operate initially from one cell, at a maximum rate of discharge of 8.2 m3 / day. The location of the facilities from which the discharge originates and the point of discharge is Lot 6772, Kootenay District. A copy of this application was posted at Line Creek Operations on November 7, 2014, in accordance with the Public Notification Regulation. Details of the application are available for viewing at the Cranbrook office of the Ministry of Environment at 205 Industrial Road G, or at the Teck Mountainview Office at 603 Pine Avenue, Sparwood, British Columbia. Any person affected by or interested in the proposed landfill facility who wishes to provide relevant information may, within 30 days after the last date of posting, publishing, service or display, send written comments to Alan Gibson, Environmental Protection Officer, Regional Operations Branch at 3rd Floor-2975 Jutland Road, P.O. Bob’s Pick: My clear winner here is the Acura RLX Hybrid, a large all-wheel drive luxury sedan that’s fun to drive, yet very easy on fuel. Auto sensory overload in Niagra By Alexandra Straub
Downtown Niagara Falls can induce sensory overload for some. Including myself. The Ontario city’s bright lights, flickering signs and novelty-themed stores take some time to absorb into the system. It’s a Las Vegas-like atmosphere, where even in the dead of night, you’d be fooled into thinking it’s daytime. The illuminated multicolour bulbs pulse as gatherers from all over soak it all in. Then there are the casinos… One could also experience a sensory overload when a Jaguar F-Type R Coupe growls with purpose as it saunters
down the road. Inside the cabin, you’re greeted with everything that might make your senses tingle. A carefully crafted cabin, an 8-speed automatic transmission and 550 prancing ponies from a 5.0L, V8 engine, wait patiently to be unleashed on a purpose-built handling course. Not to mention, there’s also a Porsche 911 Turbo S, a BMW M4 and Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible all eager to accompany you on a test loop. Those four vehicles comprise the Prestige – Performance (over $75K) category at the Automobile Journalists

Association of Canada’s annual TestFest; a time when journalists from all across Canada have the opportunity to back-to-back test what’s new on the market (See Bob McHugh’s TestFest Driveway cover story). Before my senses went into overdrive (with the Jaguar and others), I had a much more sensible time with my specifically assigned categories. The first of three groups I tested was the Small Car under $21k, which included the
Honda Fit and the Nissan Micra. Then there was the SUV/ CUV under $35k class including the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue and the Subaru Outback 2.5i. And finally, Sports/ Performance under $50k that allowed me to get behind the wheel of the BMW M235i, Ford Mustang (with the 2.3L, 4-cylinder Ecoboost engine), the Kia Forte Koup, Subaru WRX STI and the VW GTI. The Nissan Micra, for just under $16k is a great value and the car is fun to drive. Then there’s the Subaru Outback ($33,695- price as tested), which was a surprise for me. It didn’t break a
sweat on the off-road portion of the test and drove really nicely on the road. Of course, I can’t complain when I have the keys to the seventh generation VW GTI, or the Subaru WRX STI, or even the BMW M235i. Yes, it’s fun to enjoy the combined effort of engineering, design, and execution prowess, but the modus operandi of the weeklong event is to pick the best of the best. While it’s fantastic to take out some of the most incredible machines on the market, I was pleasantly surprised how much I took to the City Car category. Driving the Kia
Soul EV and the smart fortwo electric drive were definite highlights. Being a huge fan of EVs, it’s nice to know that the category is growing. I mean, I’d love to be able to afford a Tesla Model S (as would many), it’s just not always a reality. But the pint-sized smart and the roomier Soul EV are ideal urban rompers. Another noteworthy vehicle that impressed me was the Volvo V60 Polestar. Clad in a Rebel Blue exterior colour, it was a hoot experience. With 345 horsepower from a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, the all-wheel drive wagon is not
only practical, but also something that left me wanting to drive it again and again. There’s room for five and a couple strollers in the trunk. A perfect family hatch?! Then there was the Challenger Hellcat. I mean, 707 horsepower in an urban setting seems like overkill, no? Nevertheless, Dodge has done a fabulous job with updating the interior and overall refinement of the vehicle that now turns even more heads. Winners will be announced here starting in December. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Staying safe means stowing your cell driving while distracted and not crashing or causing an accident has more to do with luck than competence. And seriously, why wait for luck to run out? Overcoming that cell phone addiction on the road is as easy as turning off your phone and putting it in the glove box or trunk of your car, where you absolutely cannot reach it while you are driving. That’s what instructors at Mercedes Benz Driving Academy insist their students do when they step into a car. Yes, I know, you are expecting an important call so you don’t want your phone off. In that case, Bluetooth or wired headsets (worn only in one ear unless you are on a motorbike) are
By Lauren Kramer
My kids have my permission to yell at their dad whenever they spot him using his cell phone while driving. Which, unfortunately, is often. I’ve coached them on what to say: “You’re putting my safety at risk,” “You’re breaking the law,” and “Dad, put your phone away this minute!” I’m not alone when I say my biggest fear is that someone I love will be in a horrific, lifechanging, potentially fatal car accident. And every time a driver picks up their phone while operating a car, that accident becomes increasingly likely. We’re all doing it, but we know we shouldn’t. Sneaking peeks at our cell phones while we’re driving has become an irresistible temptation as more and more of us become addicted to checking email, responding to texts and answering calls whenever they come in – and no matter what is going on around us. It’s easy to rationalize. “This will just take a second,” we think, exaggerating the amount of time it takes to, say, respond to a text message. According to the Canadian Automobile Association the average distraction time for this task is 22.6 seconds, the distance of 373 metres of travel at 40 km/h and the equivalent of four intersections or 68 parked cars.
But it’s not just the texting time that’s so perilous, it’s the time it will take you to regain your focus on the road, to bring your car to a standstill if you have to. Perception, reaction and braking time after a distraction like this – even something as minor as hitting two letters to type “OK” - is 25 metres, the equivalent of a lineup of 17 people. That’s a long time when you’re controlling a powerful, hunk of metal like a car. The truth is that cell phones have become every much as dangerous an addiction when driving as inebriation – even
more so because they lack the ugly stigma associated with drunk driving. Yet the probability of being in a crash while you are distracted is horrifying. Texting, even just a word? You are 23 times more likely to crash. Talking on your cell phone – four-to-five times more likely. And reading that ‘urgent’ email that simply couldn’t wait makes you three times more likely to be in a potentially fatal accident, according to research by CAA. Findings by ICBC show that distracted driving is the second leading contributing factor of vehicle fatalities in

BC. That’s why, October 20, new penalties for distracted drivers were implemented in this province. If you are caught with your cell phone in hand or programming your GPS while driving, you’ll get a $167 fine and a deduction of three penalty points. It’s a rap on the knuckles but also a reminder to fight our addiction to electronic devices while we’re driving. Because the fact is, for even the best drivers, it’s impossible to safely split your attention while you’re driving. Don’t be fooled if you’ve been lucky thus far, because

At home on the Serengeti and in the city By Ian Harwood

The recent Mercedes GClass increased the aggressiveness of its physique. And, as a result, the G550 I tested can now navigate around the rhinos in the African Serengeti as well navigate the busy streets of downtown Vancouver without looking out of place! – Many would think you’re crazy to take a Mercedes off-road, but this vehicle has been exploring Africa and Asia for decades. Looks: It has a European look at the front end, with two marker lights on top of the fenders and LED light strips just below the headlights.
A large Mercedes emblem is proudly displayed in the centre of the grille. The large wheel well openings and fender flares contribute to the aggressive look but serve a practical purpose in allowing for full travel of the suspension without letting the tires rub. In The Cab: Good vision on all sides. The cabin is extremely well laid out. Controls are easily reached and I like the carbon fibre look over the wood burl. Three rocker switches on the dash control the centrifugal lock on the transfer case, the rear differential lock, and the front differential lock. When you engage these locks, an au-

roads. I have to admit I was a little sceptical of taking this vehicle through the mud and steep washouts without damaging it. To my surprise, the vehicle performed just fine. I had driven on a steep side slope without and problem although my passenger was a little worried we were going to roll. I took it through a series of well-placed ditches to test the articulation and managed to raise the passenger front tire easily three feet in the air while I teetered back and forth. A section of deep mud was no problem with the rear differential lock on. There was no chance of this being stuck. Besides there was no way I was calling Mercedes for a tow! Verdict: I do not think people are going out to buy this luxury vehicle to drive some rough back roads but it would be comforting to know it can. Power: The G550 is equipped with a 5.5 Litre V8, which has an output of 382 hp and 391 ft lb of torque. The transmission is a 7G-TRONIC plus, that has been around since 1960, although updated to handle today’s requirements. Ian.harwood@drivewaybc. ca

Second star for the Starlite Campaign is a BMO Halloween treat

Halloween when Mary Quinn, BMO Branch Manager asked EKFH’s Donna Grainger to drop
into the branch for a costume filled visit. The financial institution was decorated to the rafters and treats were available at every service counter. However, the special treat Mary and the BMO team had for EKFH is a $5,000 gift to the Starlite Campaign. BMO and EKFH have worked together on many projects in the past. This current gift of $5,000 will be one of the Leadership Gifts as part of the soon to be released Intensive Care Capital Campaign. The regional hospital foundation is undertaking a major campaign to purchase critical medical equipment for the new 6-bed intensive care unit at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The ICU equipment fundraising goal is $1 million. EKFH has committed to raise funds for the equipment which frees
up a portion of Ministry and KERHD funding for the project that will now be used to renovate the old ICU area into which the existing pediatric unit will move. EKFH will officially launch its new ICU equipment campaign
in the weeks ahead. Fundraising for the ICU equipment will also become the focal point for EKFH’s annual holiday fundraiser the Starlite Campaign. Thank you BMO…. Your leadership gift will become the 2nd
star to light the path for others who find themselves in need of the best in intensive care at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. EKFH welcomes the opportunity to present to groups and/or individuals to learn more
about the needs of the ICU fundraising campaign. To schedule a presentation, contact Donna Grainger, Executive Director at EKFH – Toll-free: 1-877-489-6481 or phone: 250 489-6481.

ties of food I will need. I walk away with 1 can of beans in tomato sauce, 1 can of kidney beans, 1 cup of brown sugar, 1 pound of margarine, 2 cups oats, 1 1⁄2 cups peanut butter, 4 cups rice, 1 1⁄2 cups strawberry jam, and 10 tea bags. Total spent $8.50. I have $7.49 left for a week to get vegetables and fruit. Off to the grocery store again. I had already bought fruit and vegetables on Saturday for my family so rather than have food rotting in the fridge the clerk weighs out my items so I know the cost. I have to pay for lettuce and an onion which works out to $1.20. Left with $6.29 I pick up 2 bananas, 3 apples, 1 pear, 1 kiwi, 3 carrots, 1 stock of broccoli and 1 small sliver of cauliflower. I feel shame as I have to

put back 1 apple and the kiwi – I don’t have enough money to have it all, only five pieces of fruit for seven days. Wednesday 15 October – The last day before the challenge, so I eat three healthy meals and have some snacks at work through the day and before bed. Panic sets in as I realize I have to really stretch my food. Thursday 16 October – I make a cup of porridge for breakfast and realize I only have 2 cups for the week. I eat a 1⁄4 cup with a few raisins on top for flavour. I had no money for milk. I drink some tea and make my sandwich for lunch – peanut butter and jam with a banana for lunch. A can of soup for supper, I eat the whole thing with two slices of bread and margarine. I count out the slices of bread in my loaf noting how many pieces of bread I have left for the rest of the week. I go to bed hungry. Friday 17 October – 1⁄4 cup of porridge with a bit of brown sugar, peanut butter and jam sandwich, 1⁄2 an apple for lunch. I now realize my piece of fruit has to be stretched out through the day not eaten in one sitting. Supper is no name boxed pasta and cheese, some green beans and a salad using a few lettuce leaves and 1⁄2 an apple. All night I drink black tea. I used two tea bags today so I count the tea bags to make sure I will have enough for the rest of the week. I have seven left so make a mental note to keep track. Despite the “tea caffeine” I have a headache so I drink glasses of water. My stomach is still growling. Saturday 18 October – I try to sleep in but am up early trying to figure out what to eat. I eat two pieces of toast with margarine and jam. I have two more pieces of toast, drink water and tea and have 1⁄2 a pear. Lunch is a peanut butter and jam sandwich and 1⁄2 a pear. My son asks why I only take a bite of my sandwich and then put it back in the container. I tell him that the sandwich and the rest of the pear have to last until supper time. As my son helps me move furniture, boxes and do cleaning I real-
ize I have very little energy. I sit down to eat the rest of the pear and drink some water. I ask myself why did I sign up for this, are you going to be able to last. Before supper I finish the green beans and eat a couple lettuce leaves. For supper I eat the rest of Friday’s pasta and open the can of brown beans. I devour it and am still hungry. I have a few raisins for a snack and eat a 1⁄4 cup already cooked oatmeal before bed. Sunday 19 October – I want to quit today and go out to eat or cook up some fresh vegetables. I have a heart to heart talk with my partner about the reality that I live in and the reality of so many people in my community. I am now counting down the days until my hunger, my headache and my growling stomach go away. I get to “stop” this challenge while others live it for days, weeks and even years. I eat my 1⁄4 cup porridge with 1⁄2 a banana for breakfast. I eat no name pasta, brown beans and the rest of the banana for lunch. I look at what is left in the fridge. I am frustrated and not sure what to do. I don’t eat supper but sip tea from Saturday’s reused tea bag and drink water. Around 8:00pm I am hungry and all I can think about is food and what I can eat when the challenge is over. I decide to make some soup. I chop 1⁄2 the onion so fine I can barely see it. I do the same with the carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. I use margarine to brown everything as I had no money for oil or to purchase any spices. I cook the whole bag of lentils and make a soup that is more like a stew. I eat two bowls late at night with two pieces of bread. Now I feel like everything will be alright and I will get through this challenge. Monday 20 October – A few days to go and I sit down to plan out the day. Porridge cooked, I ration and eat 1⁄4 of it with brown sugar. I have two pieces of toast with jam and peanut butter. I pack my lunch with pea soup and the last apple. I feel so proud when I eat lunch today as it is the first day that I feel full. I offer some soup to my family and then tell them “no” they have to eat something else. I feel selfish not
www.kootenayadvertiser.com A19 wanting to share but I look at what remains with two days to go. They have a fridge and cupboard full of food to eat while I have watched my basket of “welfare food” slowly dwindle away. I eat 4 lettuce leaves for snack tonight. I realize today that I am getting a bit grumpy and all I think about is food. I struggle to work and can’t really think straight. I get up from my desk and walk to the file cabinet and forget what I need to get. I start to write down notes to myself to try to remember. I drink tea and water to help throughout the day. Tuesday 21 October – I wake up without a headache but am tired. I eat a 1⁄2 cup of porridge with raisins and brown sugar. I drink tea from Monday’s reused tea bag and pack my lunch, pea soup again. I have absolutely no energy to walk up the stairs at work so I took the elevator yesterday and today. Feeling lazy I haven’t even gone for my daily walk or run. It hurts to move my legs and arms. I feel drained. For supper I cook the 4 cups of rice I got from the Salvation Army and I eat the last of my pea soup. I have a few leaves of lettuce and onion for a makeshift salad for supper. I “splurge” tonight and toast the rest of my bread, four small pieces with margarine and jam for a snack. There was a bit of mold on one piece so I just tore it off. I can’t taste the mold as my toast is smothered in jam. I am excited realizing that I can finish this challenge with only one more day to go. Wednesday 22 October – the last day I finish my porridge and drink some tea. I have lettuce, some onion, a can of kidney beans and cooked rice left. I go home for lunch and eat rice with margarine on it, a recipe given to me by someone who has lived in poverty. It tastes amazing. I look at my tea bags and have four left so make a cup of tea. For supper tonight I open a can of kidney beans, heat up some rice and eat it with the last of my lettuce. I have 3 tea bags, some brown sugar, cooked rice and kidney beans left after my week. I haven’t had fruit in two days. I wait until 12:01 when the
challenge is done and open my fridge exploring the contents. I grab an apple, an orange and I go back for some grapes. It’s like I have never had fruit before as I stop to think of the simple luxuries I have in life. The welfare food challenge was a huge learning experience for me after years of being employed and being able to put food on the table. I grew up with family talking about the depression and they rationed food even though they had more than many. As a child I never went without the basic necessities of food, shelter and clothing. During the challenge I thought about those in Cranbrook who struggle financially, not just the homeless but
the working poor, the neighbours down the street and the seniors who live on a fixed income. My challenge was only for a week and I will never fully grasp the daily struggle that people in poverty experience. I took the challenge so that I could try to understand what people with limited resources go through. I still had the luxury of being able to drive, while many can’t afford a vehicle, insurance and maintenance. I had a job to go to each day of the challenge but I struggled to do my work due to hunger and my inability to focus. I only had $21.00 to live on but I knew that it was only for a week. I have the privilege of eating out when I want and buying what I want.
I saved money during the challenge with my stomach growling and the thought of food ever present in my mind. I often thought about what I can do to make change locally. I know that there are families, youth, seniors and individuals struggling with poverty daily in Cranbrook. I never cheated during my challenge week but I have never had to could slices of bread or tea bags before to ensure I had enough to last. Will I take the welfare food challenge in 2015, as yet I am undecided. I do
know that I will continue to challenge myself daily to find ways to support local poverty issues and help those residents in Cranbrook who are struggling. What can you do to help? Write government asking for change to income assistance rates and get involved with local, provincial and federal agencies working towards change. Visit welfarefoodchallenge.org for more information.

GORRIE: George Alexander On Monday, October 27th, George passed peacefully from this life at the Rocky Mountain Village at the age of 80 years. George was lovingly supported by his family and caregivers during the last days of his life. The youngest of six children, George was born in Fernie on September 30, 1934 to parents Harry and Janet Gorrie. He was raised on the family farm in Newgate where he became skilled at “fixing things” with his brothers. He loved all animals, including a colt named Dobbin and throughout his life had several well loved dogs, especially Buckshot. George worked various construction jobs throughout the province before retiring in Jaffray where he once again enjoyed tinkering on trucks, tractors, Cats, and other machinery. He also loved to spend his days chopping and stacking wood for the winter, or driving the back roads with Brader in search of more firewood. George loved and cherished his many family and close friends, but nothing could bring a sparkle to his eyes more than his beloved daughter Kari and his precious grandson Brader. George and Brader shared a very special relationship, so it was only natural that when Kari became sick, George moved to Fernie to help care for Brader without hesitation. George was a gentle, kind-hearted soul who enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He will be very dearly missed by all who loved him. Rest in Peace, George. George is survived by his sister Sarah “Norma” Hall; stepdaughters Shelley Neidig and Jody (Dave) Dobie, nieces Marlene Charlesworth, Colleen (Les) Bayus, Kay Richter, and Dona (Lance) Turner; his grandson Brader Rotvold and step- grandchildren PJ, Tyler, Joel and Danica as well as many great nieces and nephews and friends to fill his life to abundance. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Collins, John, Hank, and Skinny, his niece Gene Hall and his daughter Kari Rotvold. A memorial service for George was held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the Pioneer Hall, Grasmere at 1:00 pm. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Elk Valley Hospice c/o PO Box 670 Fernie, BC V0B 1M0. Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd. Hugs: To Stefan and family and Judy for the excellent open house to showcase their renovations. Lots of history in that heritage home. Thanks for showing it off. High marks to the designer/chef/ wife! Hugs: To the new owners of Woodland Grocery, Mike and Amy. The renovations are awesome. Lots of new ideas. Friendly service. Welcome to the neighborhood. Hugs: Thank you to Brian the Toyota driver. In August you gave me a ride home from Safeway with my groceries. My friend told me you gave her a ride home In September from Wal Mart. Thank you very much for your kindness, from two senior ladies who don’t drive. Hugs: I want to send out a special hug to Iona and Leila at Safeway for taking the time to call me to book appointment for flu shot and for helping find my knife that I left in the cart, all the staff at this Cranbrook store are great and that’s why I will continue to be a loyal customer. Slugs: Big Slugs to City of Cranbrook counselor that mentioned 14th Avenue as beautification in the recent JCI forum. Strongly disagree that the culvert weeds and dead trees look anything like beauty!!! Perhaps the new City Council will ensure this area will be enhanced with proper plants and water the trees (after replacement of all the dead ones). Thinking it was very poorly done.
Hugs: To the wonderful, caring staff at Cranbrook Regional Hospital that handled my second c-section on October 22nd. What a bunch of professionals! Everyone made us feel so at ease and helped us through the traumatizing experience of having a baby earlier than expected. Our experience of having Baby H will be filled with memories of doctors and nurses that really showed they cared about us. Slugs: We’ve lived here in Cranbrook for about six months now and love exploring the outdoors especially up Gold Creek road. We are completely blown away by the amount of garbage that gets dumped out there continually, for a city with an awesome recycle/ waste management program that takes garbage for “FREE”......yes free. Yet people keep throwing their garbage (broken car seats, styrofoam, household garbage, which is free to take to the waste yard) this goes on week after week out there. Come on you guys, this is your backyard. Slugs: Is there a Welcome Wagon in Cranbrook? Received a card in mailbox - responded online. NOTHING. Tried again six weeks later - NOTHING.
Hugs: The Cranbrook Legion would to thank all the First Responders for the wonderful job they do in and around our Community. If you have a Hug or a Slug...we’d like to hear it. Simply email us at shannon@kootenayadvertiser.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is you keep it tasteful. Hugs and Slugs will be printed as space allows, if we miss yours check back next week and you will be bumped to the start of the list. You can also drop by a written submission to our office at 1510 2nd Street N. or call Shannon at (250)489-3455 or 1-800-665-2382
