Just when Langford residents thought their municipal election was a little sleepy, things have started to heat up.

Councillor candidates running under the Time for a Change banner in the Nov. 15 election discovered through an email last week that their request to host a hospitality gathering for residents of Alexander Mackie Lodge was declined, because the Lodge’s board of directors was supporting the incumbent councillors.

An inquiry from Langford resident Etta Connor, who is helping promote the candidates, was met with a positive response initially by executive director Lawrence Saracuse. But when Connor emailed Saracuse on Oct. 29 to check on the proposed gathering, his reply stated the board had turned down

The email, obtained by the Gazette, read, “… the Board has chosen to support the incumbent Councillors in Langford as they have a longstanding and very positive relationship. The other candidates, while the Board wishes them every success, will not be invited to the Mackie.”

Micky Fleming, co-owner of Cherish Community Living, which operates the Lodge, said the incumbents are not being invited to make presentations to the residents. She said council of the day is invited in annually for coffee and to tour the facility, to show appreciation for the support the city provided to help get Alexander Mackie Lodge built in 2006 and expanded in 2009.

Coun. Lanny Seaton is currently on the board of the Lodge.

chicken breasts, skinned large onion, finely chopped butter garlic, crushed fresh ginger, grated green chili peppers, finely chopped (optional) paprika curry powder (optional) tomato sauce (I use crushed tomatoes) salt to taste whipping cream (or light cream but it doesn’t taste as good) fresh cilantro, chopped

Method: Cut chicken into bite sized pieces and brown in a pan, set aside.

In saucepan, fry onions in butter until golden brown.

Add garlic, ginger, chili peppers, paprika and curry powder.

Fry for a few seconds.

Add tomato sauce, salt and chicken, slowly bringing to boil.

Reduce heat simmering until chicken is nearly done about 15-20 minutes.

Add whipping cream, stir and simmer until chicken is tender.

Garnish with cilantro.

Serve with Naans and plain rice.

A family focus is brought to cancer care

Families have many fears when their child undergoes cancer treatment. A special unit at Vic General aims not only to treat the patient, but help the family, too.

A

nne Carrelli steps into the waiting area and spots three other women standing in the middle of the room talking and laughing in the midst of a group hug.

They spot Carrelli and invite her in.

Within moments, the excited group decides to go into a side room to chat privately. Carrelli turns to a waiting reporter and says she’ll be back in a few minutes and apologizes for the delay.

Carrelli returns a short while later and again apologizes to the reporter and points out that she was meeting with the mother Kevin Laird of a child with cancer.

Reporting In Carrelli’s world as a pediatric oncology nurse with Island Health, connecting with the family means everything.

Victoria General Hospital operates the region’s only pediatric oncology daycare unit, which treats and counsels sick children in their cancer journey.

The team, which includes four nurses, a physician, social worker and child psychologist, is responsible for everything from physical checkups to chemotherapy, even palliative care.

And while that seems clinical, it has one enduring quality: loving care.

“You see a family at their most vulnerable here,” Carrelli said in an

interview. “There is nothing more terrifying to a family than the potential loss of their child.”

Almost all of the families that walk through the clinic doors at Vic General have been treated at B.C. Children’s Hospital first. It’s a way the health-care system can keep families closer to home and still provide quality care.

To Carrelli, the key to good oncology care is building trust and getting to know the families.

This allows the family – and more importantly the child – to feel comfortable in their surroundings. During cancer care families are inundated with medical information they need to know to help their child fight the cancer.

“We try to build that trust with the families so they trust themselves,” said Carrelli.

“They need to know there is more to looking at the numbers on a [medical] machine. They know their child and need to assess how their child is doing by looking and talking to them, too.”

Families have many fears when they come into care. They wonder whether the cancer treatment is going to work – and there is always an underlying fear on how they’re going to get through this with their child.

The medical team attempts to reassure families that pediatric cancer is curable, but the odds are only as good as the science available.

“We believe in our treatments and we believe in our protocols,” Carrelli said.

“If we get to a point where things don’t appear to be working, we look at other options.”

Carrelli has been a pediatric nurse for more than 20 years, the last eight in pediatric oncology. She wouldn’t trade her job for anything, she said.

Still, there are many hardships in the job. Like the kids that don’t make it.

“I might not be able change the end result, but I really have to make a difference on their way there. For me, that’s treating every family the way I would want my family to be treated,” Carrelli said.

Children fighting cancer often are more optimistic than their parents or sometimes even the health team treating them.

Most parents say kids who are fighting cancer just want to be kids. Oftentimes you can see children working hard to please their parents and do what’s

expected of them.

Children, especially the younger ones, seldom talk about the cancer, Carrelli said, but some do have fears about some painful procedures.

“When kids get very sick we are sometimes protective of them and we and the families don’t tell them how much sicker they are, but the children seem to know without being told.”

Still, Carrelli stresses it’s always important for the team to do a better job and make the cancer journey as easy as possible for both her young patients and their families.

“They look at all the requests from all the departments and they figure out what they can afford.

Then they send us a wish list.”

This year the goal is to raise $12,000. “The important thing about this stretcher is it’s electric,” Hogg says. “You can change the position of the patient just by pushing a button, and it just makes it a lot easier for the staff in a lot of ways, as well as being much more comfortable for the patient.”

This year’s goal was influenced by the drive to help as many people as possible, she says. “(VGH) is the trauma centre for the whole Island, and most of us will end up in the emergency room at some point, so we thought this was something that could serve a lot of people.”

Coinciding with the last day of planter orders, the Auxiliary’s annual “Christmas Chaos” sale happens next Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the VGH lecture hall, room S263, just opposite Tim Hortons.

There will be a “new and nearly new” table, silent auction items, quilted creations, home baking, BeadforLife jewelry, local wool products and photography.

“It’s not that we’re against those other people, but we’re definitely a strong supporter of the current council,” Fleming said.

Both Elections B.C. and Tom Moore, the chief elections officer for Langford, told the Gazette the declined request to speak did not fall under their jurisdiction.

Terry Power, campaign manager for his wife Pauline Adams, a Neighbours candidate, said the group heard much the same response when they investigated whether being shut out at Mackie was illegal or inappropriate.

Fleming pointed out that the Lodge is private property, but added there are no political posters inside encouraging people to vote one way or the other. She acknowledged the annual walkthrough by incumbents has an understandably higher profile with the campaign in progress.

Power was concerned that the perceived incumbent advantage at the Lodge could make the difference between a candidate getting in or not. The difference between Roger Wade, the last councillor elected in 2011, and the seventh-place candidate, Grant McLachlan, was little more than 400 votes.

Fleming said the Lodge’s 135 residents are not discouraged from attending all-candidates meetings or other public events relating to the election.

New buses are coming to the Sooke School District.

Six new vehicles will take to the roads around the West Shore and Sooke starting in spring of 2015, after the province announced School District 62’s request of $877,759 for updating its fleet had been approved.

“We have an 18-bus fleet and it’s important to replenish that on a ongoing basis,” said Harold Cull, secretary treasurer for the district. “(By adding) new vehicles and new technology, (we) maintain the safety of the bus fleet for the district.”

Cull said a combination of age and mileage were factors in the move to replace six older buses. He added the funding comes at a great time and is exactly what they needed.

The Ministry of Education’s fleet renewal program now works with the Association of School Transportation Services of B.C. to negotiate the purchase of buses.

It uses the Standing Offer Pricing model, which replaced the scenario where negotiating individually with bus providers was the job of each school district.

“It’s great news anytime we can get capital funding to enhance our infrastructure or assets. We’ll take that,” Cull said. “It give a great benefit to the funding to get six new buses in one year. It’ll reduce the average age of our fleet and we’re pretty happy we’re able to get this.”

School districts across the province own and operate more than 1,000 buses, with an average cost of $146,293. Districts spend approximately $90 million annually on transporting students.

Remembrance is changing How will you mark Remembrance Day this year?

In 2014, as we mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War – so erroneously dubbed ‘the war to end all wars’ following the horrific conflict – we pause to reflect People seeing how different our the value again in world is today than honouring veterans when those young men and women left their homes for the far-flung battlefields of Europe.

At the same time, we recognize that the risks today’s service men and women face remain all too real. As recent events in Quebec and Ontario remind us, our Armed Forces personnel are not only at risk when fighting on foreign soil.

Each day, both at home and abroad, service personnel strive to keep Canada and Canadians secure; sometimes putting their lives at risk in doing so.

It’s likely in response to this that local members of the Canadian Legion noticed a spike of early interest among those looking for poppies this year.

In fact, as the number of veterans from those early battles dwindles each Nov. 11, we see renewed demonstrations of remembrance from younger generations – from soldiers, sailors and airforce personnel, their families and friends, and the community at large.

Local author and historian Mark Zuehlke, this week awarded the 2014 Pierre Berton Award: the Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media for his contributions to the promotion of Canadian history (see page A27), has seen a shift in recent years not only to those participating at Remembrance Day services, but also those actively seeking the stories that formed such a significant part of our national identity.

From the traditional readership of veterans and history circles who sought out his Canadian Battle Series titles, Zuehlke has seen significant growth among younger readership, nearly half of which are women in the 35- to 65-year-old demographic. These are people interested in their family stories, the generations that came before, and how their experiences shaped the society we now enjoy.

“I’m very heartened when I go to the cenotaphs on Nov. 11 and see all these families there with their kids; you didn’t see that 15 years ago,” Zuehlke reflected. “I think people started thinking about remembrance more.”

More than half the world’s nations already recognize environmental rights. It’s time for Canada to live up to its values and join this growing global movement.

There’s no date yet for a vote on Bill C-634, but its introduction has started a conversation among politicians in Ottawa. Let’s hope people from across the political spectrum will recognize the importance of ensuring that all Canadians have the right to a healthy environment.

Amidst the ceremonies and sombre minutes of silence throughout the West Shore this Remembrance Day, the 7th Juan de Fuca Scout Group is making sure that the next generation remembers the sacrifice Canadian soldiers made almost a century ago.

“It’s very youth driven,” says scout group commissioner Donna Armstrong.

“It’s about the little Beavers who are five to seven years old that need to know what Remembrance Day is all about.”

Most of the youth and leadership come from the military or military-based families, she says.

The scouts begin marching from John Stubbs elementary at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Uniformed and with flags in hand, they make their way to the Juan de Fuca cenotaph at West Shore Parks and Recreation to begin the ceremony at about 10:45.

“When everything is all over, we give everybody the opportunity to lay their poppies on the cenotaph,” says Armstrong. “The entire cenotaph is covered in poppies. It’s quite the sight.”

The cenotaph is located just outside the Juan de Fuca 55-plus Activity Centre across from the bus exchange at 1767 Old Island Hwy. and everyone is welcome to join.

He fondly remembers how much the care of people in Hawaii meant to him. Now that he is in a position to give back, he said, “I just wanted to echo that back in my home town.”

Brown said last year they had a full house and tattooed from 8 a.m. until 3 a.m. the next morning, after which they dropped off a cheque for $1,200 for the Legion. Military personnel get 10 per cent off all year round, and for those tattoos worth $250 or more, an extra 10 per cent is

passed along as a donation to the Legion.

“We had a good day and it was great and we gave them the money and they almost fell over backwards,” Brown said. “The appreciation they had made it all worth it. We decided to put all our energy into Remembrance Day and made a huge deal out of it and it was awesome. Our tattoo shop was full the entire day and it was great.”

There is more than one way to remember.

The new incentives provide a 20-per-cent discount for privately owned buildings and 25-per-cent off for public, nonprofit or strata-owned buildings, up to $25,000 when switching to solar hot water.

“We’ve had great participation from homes, but this technology is appropriate for larger properties and businesses, as well, to see large savings,” says Glenys Verhulst with Solar Colwood.

“This makes it easier now for larger users of hot water to ben-

efit from collecting free energy from the sun.”

Solar Colwood lists buildings such as hotels, condominiums and fitness centres as some of the examples of larger properties that can benefit.

The smaller incentives for residential properties are still available, and cover a third of the cost of switching to solar, up to a maximum of $4,000.

With Halloween falling on both a Friday and a clear, mild night this year, West Shore RCMP were kept busy well into the wee hours of Saturday, Nov. 1.

The detachment received 60 calls for service from around the five municipalities between early afternoon on the 31st until 7 a.m. Saturday.

Calls ranged in severity, with the majority involving liquor intoxica-

tion, disturbing the peace and causing mischief, though RCMP did locate one youth with a firearm in Langford.

Officers resolved the situation with the young man without complication, said Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz.

The busy night was somewhat expected with the weekend and good weather taken into account, she said.

“Sixty calls for service is definitely more than normal. It’s the same scenario if New Year’s falls on a weekend. More people decide to hold a party or go out.” acowan@goldstreamgazette.com

Jordans revamps previous Langford store News Gazette staff

The first ever Jordans Home is opening in the West Shore.

The 22,000-square-foot home furnishing store on the corner of Attree Avenue and Jacklin Road revamps and takes over from Jordans Casual Homes store.

Company and spokesperson David De Lusignan said they are thrilled to be enhancing their brand in Langford and the West Shore.

“We are extremely excited about bringing something to the Island we feel is not over here,” he said. “We’ve shopped literally all over the world to buy for this store. We have things from Mexico to the United States to Asia and India. We’ve shopped for

over a year just for this store, literally everywhere, to make it unique.”

The family business started as a small area rug shop in 1929 and has grown into one of the biggest home-furnishing stores in the B.C. The Langford store employs 15, most from the West Shore and De Lusignan said he hopes the store will be accepted as part of the community.

“Our hope is that any charity in the area that needs to put a function on knows we are happy to accommodate,” he said.

“We’re very happy to be here and we are looking forward to meeting all the great folks in the area and helping them.”

Johanna Henderson West Shore Arts Council Step into any mall or big box store on the West Shore and you can’t miss it: Christmas season is upon us.

You can see it in the sparkling plastic decorations hanging from every cash register, or even on Twitter, where a fullscale revolt is raging, as Starbucks has decided not to bring their gingerbread latte to British Columbia this year.

Don’t think I’m a grinch – I love the whole corporate Christmas production.

But amidst all the garlands and gift receipts, don’t forget to look to the many talented local artisans here on the West Shore for some unique, handmade and often one-of-a-kind items.

I bring this up now (I know, it’s early) because November seems to be the unofficial craft month across Victoria, with some particularly fantastic offerings happening out in our neck of the woods.

It uses direct injection technology and has the ability to switch off half of the cylinders to help save fuel. There is a small indicator light on the instrument cluster that tells the driver when the engine is running on just 4-cylinders. This helps the driver feather the throttle to keep the engine in this fuel saving mode as long as possible. When more power is needed, the engine automatically reverts to all eight cylinders for maximum power.

At home on the Serengeti and in the city

without damaging it. To my surprise, the vehicle performed just fine. I had driven on a steep side slope without and problem although my passenger was a little worried we were going to roll. I took it through a series of wellplaced ditches to test the articulation and managed to raise the passenger front tire easily three feet in the air while I teetered back and forth. A section of deep mud was no problem with the rear differential lock on.

There was no chance of this being stuck. Besides there was no way I was calling

And, as a result, the G550 I tested can now navigate around the rhinos in the African Serengeti as well navigate the busy streets of downtown Vancouver without looking out of place!

– Many would think you’re crazy to take a Mercedes off-road, but this vehicle has been exploring Africa and Asia for decades.

Looks:

It has a European look at the front end, with two marker lights on top of the fenders and LED light strips just below the headlights.

A large Mercedes emblem is proudly displayed in the centre of the grille. The large wheel well openings and fender flares contribute to the aggressive look but serve a practical purpose in allowing for full travel of the suspension without letting the tires rub.

In The Cab:

Good vision on all sides.

The cabin is extremely

well laid out. Controls are easily reached and I like the carbon fibre look over the wood burl. Three rocker switches on the dash control the centrifugal lock on the transfer case, the rear differential lock, and the front differential lock.

When you engage these locks, an audible sound appears along with a light on the dash.

The navigation screen is just above the centre stack on the dash. It looks a little out of place, almost if it

were an iPad placed there.

I would have liked to have seen more of integration into the dash.

The seats are very comfortable and controlled from the door panel. The steering wheel has a piano black lacquer on the smooth surfaces and the upholstery is ‘designo’ leather giving this space a luxurious feel to it.

Safety first:

Driver and front passenger air bag, side and rear head airbag. 4 wheel ABS,

traction control, electronic stability control, and brake assist. In the event of an accident the engine is automatically turned off, hazard lights are turned on, and doors are automatically unlocked. Now that is thinking!

I had the opportunity to test this vehicle on the back roads. I have to admit I was a little sceptical of taking this vehicle through the mud and steep washouts

The G550 is equipped with a 5.5 Litre V8, which has an output of 382 hp and 391 ft lb of torque. The transmission is a 7G-TRONIC plus, that has been around since 1960, although updated to handle today’s requirements.

Busy weekend ahead for Grizzlies The relatively well-rested Victoria Grizzlies should be raring to go for this weekend’s back-to-back home games at The Q Centre.

The Grizzlies, whose last game was a 5-2 win over Alberni Valley in Port Alberni on Nov. 1, host the Penticton Vees tonight (Nov. 7) and Powell River Kings tomorrow night. Both games start at 7 p.m.

Last weekend’s game against the Bulldogs saw the Grizzlies use a big third period to rack up the score.

Cole Pickup’s unassisted third period marker gave the visitors a 2-1 lead midway through the final frame. The Bulldogs tied it up with 2:14 left on a shorthanded goal from Darian Henry, but Victoria

regained the lead 56 seconds later on the power play when Matthew Kennedy notched his second of the game, from Dane Gibson.

With the Bulldogs’ goalie pulled for an extra attacker, the Grizzlies found the open net twice in the final minute, as Mitchell Barker and Kevin Massy added to the margin.

Michael Stiliadis made 29 saves for the win.

Wolves keeping pace with defending champs The Victoria Cougars may have some games in hand, but the Westshore Wolves are making their games count in Vancouver

Island Junior Hockey League play.

The Jr. B Wolves are running neck and neck with the two-time defending league champs atop the South Division. Heading into Wednesday night’s game against Nanaimo at The Q Centre (game finished after the Gazette’s press deadline), the Wolves and Cougars were deadlocked with 27 points.

The Belmont Bulldogs junior varsity team celebrates their 17-16 come from behind victory over Mount Doug last week at Westhills Stadium. The game decided top spot in the Island division of the B.C. High School Football League. The Bulldogs open the playoffs next week.

History made by Belmont JVs in battle between the unbeaten Junior football squad posts firstever win over Mount Doug The ongoing growth in the Belmont secondary football program reached a pinnacle last week, as the junior varsity Bulldogs took another step on the road to progress.

Down 16-10 late in the fourth quarter at home against the arch-rival Mount Douglas Rams, the Belmont boys got a fourthdown touchdown strike from quarterback Darian Jules to receiver Brett Milligan to tie the game.

Eli Nelms-Horton, who had already kicked four points for his team, made no mistake on the convert to give the Bulldogs a 17-16 lead that held up for the win.

The victory clinched the AAA Island Conference crown for the Bulldogs (5-0) and marked the first junior varsity (Grade 9-10) win for Belmont over Mount Doug in the Bulldogs’ nine-year existence. It also was the first Rams loss to an Island team in as long as anyone around the teams could remember.

“It is rewarding to see our kids start to believe,” he said.

Belmont receiver Court Boice named B.C. player of week Converted quarterback Court Boice is working out very well, thank you, in his new position with the Belmont Bulldogs senior varsity team.

Boice, in Grade 12 at the West Shore school, was named B.C. High School Football’s AAA varsity player of the week. He caught five passes for 151 yards and scored two touchdowns in Belmont’s 44-7 victory over West Vancouver last week.

The stellar day helped Boice add to his leagueleading receiving yards total. He has 590 yards, averaging a league best 118 yards per game, and five touchdowns.

The native of Seattle joined the Belmont program over Mount Douglas because it was “on the rise” and says he enjoys the family atmosphere of the team. “Our offense is a total blast to play in.

We spread the ball around and challenge defenses and we score a lot of points,” he said.

Boice played quarterback from Grade 5 until a couple of years back when shoulder surgery forced him into a new position.

Black Press launches crowdfunding initiative Online philanthropic endeavour links to FundRazr B.C. communities care.

This publication is now part of an exciting new initiative undertaken by Black Press in British Columbia that works to further communicate the good work being done in communities, and provide a new opportunity for organizations and individuals to tap into that fountain of caring.

BlackPress4Good.com is an online platform that brings the popular and successful phenomenon of crowdfunding to Black Press readers.

Charitable projects, causes and campaigns are now able to deliver their message on the community level, safely and securely, in an online format to reach the vast digital audience and funding sources.

“Crowdfunding provides a means for individuals, organizations and businesses to raise money by appealing to the public,” explained Andrew Franklin, project lead for Black Press.

“This platform is community focused and will be enhanced through the power of your local newspaper. The audience will be very aware of the campaigns and it will be up to the public as to whether they make a donation or not. Early indications show very positive signs. In addition to the exposure through your community media, the success of the campaigns will also rely on active social media participation. Anyone can set up a campaign, however there are safeguards in place to ensure each campaign is legitimate,” Franklin said.

Black Press has launched this new community service in partnership with FundRazr, the platform at the roots of BlackPress4Good.com. More than 40,000 people and groups around the world have raised in excess of $50 million via FundRazr.

Fundraisers register online via the link on this

newspaper’s website home page, provide information about their objectives and fund recipients, and their project profiles are then posted on a dedicated website page to reach out to readers, who can monitor the progress of a specific cause. Supporters make their donations via PayPal, a secure and well-established digital payment system.

Under 10 per cent of the total amount raised will be levied by FundRazr, PayPal and Black Press to recover the administration, support, marketing and hosting costs associated with this initiative.

Readers will also have the opportunity to be inspired and touched by the good news content of the Black Press 4Good blog, at blogs.blackpress4good.com/. Victoria author, historian honoured Award comes on heels of the release of 11th title in Canadian Battle series Jennifer Blyth Victoria News

A Victoria author has received the prestigious 2014 Pierre Berton Award, recognizing his contribution to raising awareness about Canadian History.

Mark Zuehlke was at Rideau Hall in Ottawa Monday to receive the Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media. Presented

by Gov. Gen. David Johnston, the award celebrates those who have brought Canadian history to a wider audience.

The award comes as Zuehlke launches the 11th title in his acclaimed Canadian Battle Series of books last week, Forgotten Victory: First Canadian Army and the Cruel Winter of 1944-45, the untold story of how the Canadian Army paved the way for an Allied victory in Europe in the Second World War through an attack against the Rhineland.

“I personally think Pierre Berton was a person who truly made it legitimate to write popular history in Canada,” Zuehlke says.

Harbour Publishing describes the bestselling Canadian Battle Series as “the most detailed account of any army during World War II ever written by a single author. The series continues to confirm Zuehlke’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading popular military historians.”

“To me, the whole idea is to take these stories and put them in the hands of the people and be informed by them,” Zuehlke says.

When Zuehlke wrote the first book in what would become the Canadian Battle Series, Ortona, he had no idea of the series to come.

Sparked by a group of veterans speaking about their experiences at the long-ago battle, it was one Zuehlke himself hadn’t heard of. “I thought it was going to be a one-off but it turned out it did quite well,” he says.

“From there I started looking at campaigns that I thought hadn’t been given their due,” Zuehlke says.

While he had no finite end to the series in mind, he anticipates 14 or 15 books in all.

Why are these stories important?

“I think it’s important because when you look at the generation that went through World War II... when they came back, everything they did for the rest of their lives was indelibly pushed forward by these experiences,” Zuehlke says, pointing to the creation of the welfare state as an example. “They

had depended on each other for their lives and that kind of bond was an unbreakable one.”

Upon their return, that desire to take care of each other continued.

“And of course, it affected all of us because we are all descended from that generation.”

At the same time, because so many of that generation did not speak about their experiences, it’s the role of historians and authors like Zuehlke to share them with those who came after.

The response to the series has been very positive, Zuehlke says.

Initially coming from the expected veterans and history community, “readership has shifted,” he notes. Readers are now 40 to 45 per cent female, many in the 35 to 65-year-old group; the male readers fall in a similar demographic. These are people who are interested in their family stories, and learning about the generations that came before, reflective perhaps of a similar upsurge in interest Zuehlke sees in Remembrance Day generally.

“I’m very heartened when I go to the cenotaphs on November 11 and see all these families there with their kids; you didn’t see that 15 years ago,” he says.

“I think people started thinking about remembrance more.”
