Orange Bridge once again?

The “formerly” orange bridge could be orange once again if Coun. Rob Cole gets his way. Cole raised a notice of motion at the Oct. 27 city council meeting to have the bridge repainted to its original vibrant shade.

However, he will have to appeal to the province for a new paint job; as part of Hwy. 4, the bridge is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Highways.

Roger Creek trails must wait

The Island Coast Economic Trust rejected the city’s plan to expand the trails in the Roger Creek ravine. However, city economic manager Pat Deakin said he would pursue other avenues of funding in order to get the trail expansion off the ground.

City borrows for water projects

City council passed two temporary borrowing bylaws at city council on Oct. 27.

Bylaw no. 4858 authorizes the city to borrow $2 million over 30 years to fund the new Bainbridge Water Treatment Plant currently under construction. Bylaw no. 4859 authorizes the city to borrow $912,000 over 20 years to fund Dry Creek improvements. The improvements will begin in 2015.

Dave Jansma has a new kidney, thanks to Allison Dupuis.

Dupuis, who is acquainted with Jansma through mutual friends, donated one of her kidneys to the Port Alberni man on Monday afternoon in a two-pronged operation at Vancouver General Hospital.

Both patients are doing “beyond perfect,” in Allison’s words, Dave’s wife Colleen said.

Colleen kept family and friends posted on the pair’s progress throughout the day via the social media site.

Allison was the first patient into the operating suite.

Her left kidney was removed laprascopically (doctors did not have to create a large incision, they were able to make several small incisions to insert a camera and surgical instruments, then remove the kidney that way).

“The surgeons were ‘geeking out’ over her tissue. Textbook isn’t even that perfect,” Colleen said.

surgery and doctors were assured they had a good kidney for him, Dave was prepped and Allison’s

kidney was attached internally to his right side.

Dave now has three kidneys: his other two,

while faulty, still produce urine so still serve a function. Leaving the kidneys intact while adding another is standard for kidney transplants.

His incision is right below the scar from his liver transplant in 2006, Colleen said.

Dupuis was out of surgery in two hours; Dave in four. Neither patient needed extra blood product, Colleen said: Dave had zero blood loss from the transplant.

Dupuis was only expected to be in the hospital for two nights, and was already off all pain medication by Tuesday morning, Colleen said.

She will have to stay in Vancouver for a week to make sure she is healing well.

“Dave is doing great,” Colleen said. “He does have a nerve that’s hot where they cut into him.

Hopefully that will quiet down in a few days tops.

If not, he won’t be so eager to walk,” she said, explaining that even moving air or the brush of a hospital gown is painful where the nerve is sensitive.

Dave will have to stay in

the hospital for a week to make sure his new kidney is producing urine and that infection doesn’t set in.

Once out of the hospital he will have to go for regular blood testing, to make sure his body doesn’t reject its new organ.

Dave’s anti-rejection medication will have to be increased—he already takes medication to ensure his body doesn’t reject the transplanted piece of liver he received from his sister in 2006.

“Interesting thing; the body wants to reject the kidney the most out of all the organs they transplant,” Colleen noted.

Both the Jansmas were relieved that the surgery went so well. They are looking forward to some normalcy in their lives.

“The past year has been a particularly tough rollercoaster ride,” said Colleen.

Alberni’s ‘can-do’ attitude bodes well for trails: consultant marketing the trail, to both locals and potential investors, to be key in attracting new residents and retaining locals.

According to Deakin, the city is working on improving their marketing of local trails.

“For the trails that cross private land we’re in discussion with the private land owners about how we can go about marketing the trails responsibly in a way that doesn’t affect their interests...“We’ve got a really good collection of trails so we’re working on it.”

The second referendum question will be open to all regional district residents in Port Alberni, Beaufort, Sproat Lake, Beaver Creek, Cherry Creek and members of the Uchucklesaht Tribe Government. They will be deciding whether or not the Sproat Lake Marine Patrol should become a service, rather than a grant based system.

City hall hosted a larger crowd than usual on Tuesday, Nov. 4 for a presentation on “Moving forward on Active Transportation and Trail Networks.”

The presentation, organized by city economic manager Pat Deakin, featured Laurel Sliskovic from Sociable Scientists Inc. and Nicole Vaugeois, co-director for the World Leisure Centre of Excellence in Sustainability and Innovation at Vancouver Island University.

They brought with them a class of Sustainable Leisure Management graduate students from Vancouver Island University (VIU), who spent the day going over the city’s recent Sustainability Report and Active Transportation Plan with city manager Ken Watson, city engineer Guy Cicon and Parks, Recreation and Heritage director Scott Kenny.

Sliskovic’s presentation focused on the importance of making the city and the regional district

more accessible and affordable.

Vaugeois spoke to the importance trails and amenities present in attacting tourists, residents and investors to the region. She lauded the city’s recently released Active Transportation Plan, calling it a “very progressive thing” that was just one element of the city’s “pioneering can-do spirit.”

Along with choosing regional district, school board and city councillors and the mayor, voters will have a chance to decide on two other issues.

Voters within the city of Port Alberni will be given the opportunity to decide whether or not they want a 10th Avenue crossing over Roger Creek for a cost of $5 million. The crossing, proposed by retired logging engineer Jim Rhodes, is replacing the earlier $14.6 crossing on the ballot sheet. The $5 million crossing will be a lower level crossing with a road starting behind the fall fair grounds, winding down to the creek bed and up to the end of Cherry Creek Road.

The crossing will have a 30 metre bridge over the creek.

The official nonbinding public opinion question will be: “Are you in favour of a 10th Avenue crossing from the north end of 10th Avenue to the junction of Cherry Creek Road and Johnston Road for a cost of $5 million?

City council Ian Thomas was born and raised in Port Alberni and graduated from Alberni District Secondary School.

Thomas worked in the forest industry and also worked for the City of Victoria. While a member of CUPE, he became a negotiator at contract time, and a representative to the Victoria Labour Council.

Thomas attended, the B.C. Institute of Technology (BCIT), studying aircraft maintenance. He returned to Port Alberni to raise a family and has spent the last 30 years with Coulson Flying Tankers as a flight engineer and mechanic.

Thomas raised two boys here and was a softball coach, soccer coach and Scout leader. He is presently a member of the Arrowsmith Amateur

City council-INC Radio Club and Port Alberni Salmon Festival Society.

“My platform is ‘growth through fiscal management with curb appeal’. I envision a working team at city hall, stopping the waste of tax dollars on duplication and frivolous items, and holding the line on any tax increases,” he said.

“City hall needs to be accessible, and expedient for business growth with total transparency. I believe industry, business and tourism can co-exist here.”

It’s the cleanliness of this town that needs to be “kicked up a notch”, so tourists will take notice and want to stop here.

First impression, lasting impression, he said.

Port Alberni has the potential to be the Best place in Canada.

I am currently a City of Port Alberni Councilor and running for re-election this coming November.

My entire life has been spent in Port Alberni and on graduating from ADSS I joined the staff of WCGH 37 years ago.

My political career began at the age of eighteen as Chair if the HEU, a position I proudly hold to this very day.

Literacy is a personal passion and I have been sitting on the Library Board for the past three years.

Food Security is a major concern for myself as it is widely acknowledged that in the event of a natural disaster we have, at best, only a few days food supply in our valley and food shortages can easily lead to civil unrest

City council—AF at a time when peace and order is most needed.

At the City Hall level we can and must concentrate on economic drivers that are within our grasp and not in the pursuit of unrealistic ventures outside of our direct influence.

Our environment is a capital asset that must be protected in order to preserve our unique lifestyle potential and future prosperity.

Protection means a secure domestic water supply and clean air.

Realistic economic drivers should include Tourism, Health Care, Recreation, High Tech and Education. Appropriate Industries can be attracted and nurtured under the encouragement and guidance of City Hall.

Since being on council, I’ve worked to get control of the high cost of consultants, supported lot “C” waterfront park and having marine industry on lots “A” and “B”.

I am co-chair of the regional transportation committee which is negotiating with government for an alternate access to the Alberni Valley.

My name is Ron Paulson and I am asking for the privilege of representing the City of Port Alberni as a city councillor.

I believe strongly in the Alberni Valley and what we have to offer our residents, potential investors and visitors alike. Our community has an ongoing need to be proactive in developing our ability to attract new business, both small and large, while being environmentally diligent in our approach.

Through a growing business sector the community will be better able to sustain current services and even expand the amenities we have to offer. New families need to believe we have the infrastructure to support and nurture them.

I believe in a vibrant and active business community.

In my early years in the Alberni Valley I had a long history in retail business before

moving on to the City of Port Alberni Parks and Recreation Department as a recreation programmer (10 years). I worked at Harbour Quay for the first three years it was open, starting events such as the Christmas Sail Past, soapbox derby, fall corn roasts and more.

I consider myself to be a great listener and open to new ideas and thoughts. I am analytical in assessing facts as presented on issues.

My belief in conducting myself with integrity is very important to me.

I will make myself available to others opinions and ideas.

In the past two decades I have played a significant role in several significant community events.

For the past 20 years I have helped play a key role in broadening our community identity from “Mill Town” to “Host Community”. When we host the world, we do it right.

City council I am running for the position of city councillor.

I am a husband, father of four grown children, four grandchildren and a volunteer. Like most members of the community, I have identified the biggest issue to be poor financial management specifically taxation. Port Alberni spends beyond their means and the burden is put on the tax payers.

This must stop, I will work hard promoting new revenue ideas, making reductions and voting no when we can’t afford a proposal. Being a young retiree, am willing and able to dedicate the required time, to ensure that every issue is researched and debated

City council available to all electors, using the same energy I always have to question what is presented to council and work to streamline the city’s managerial structure.

I will work co-operatively with private industry on the protection of our watershed and the safe use of interface lands for the benefit of us all.

I will make sure the taxpayers of the city are represented in, and benefit from, all economic plans for the area and will support airport, seaports and rail as needed.

I will continue to lobby for an expansion for our community forest in any way possible.

As always I will work with the rest of council and city staff (management and union) to get the best outcomes for the city, and assist new councillors as needed.

My personal commitment to build a better tomorrow has motivated me to take on this challenge.

I hear lots of talk around town about high taxes.

Locals are also concerned about unemployment and a lack of decent-paying jobs. Other problems exist too but most people place high taxes and unemployment at the top of their need-to-dosomething-about-it list.

One of the best ways to resolve these problems is to attract new business to the valley. The most attractive benefits a community could offer potential newcomers are low taxes and high-quality core services.

As a city councillor, I would focus my efforts on maintaining core services

like clean drinking water, a proper-functioning sewer system, trouble-free roadways, and overall public safety. Non-core services would take a back seat.

We can’t afford to keep putting public money into ventures that do not at least break-even: McLean Mill would better serve the public as a business.

When our local economy improves, I will broaden my support to include things that are not necessary, but desirable, like further developing Canal Beach.

I don’t give up easily. I am also authentic, humble, and will stay true to my values regardless of the challenges at hand. Please support me. Together we can build a better future.

City council Well my platform would be trains, planes, and automobiles.

Trains as in I would work with Southern Rail to try and get the freight running back into town and eliminate most of the trucks that come here. If you look at Redford Street you’ll notice the truck ruts. Eventually Johnston Road will look like that.

Which will result in higher road maintenance if not addressed.

For the “planes” I believe an upgraded airport could eventually lead to economic benefits down the road through increased tourism and economic payoffs if smaller carriers commit to Port Alberni.

Finally the “automobiles” vision would be for the

City council 10th Avenue crossing through a design build format.

Now I realize that these will have to be longerterm goals that I would look forward to working in partnership with council and mayor. I do think there are more pressing matters that need to be prioritized first, such as, some sewage and water pipes are 50-plus years old and need upgrades.

Now to help fund these projects and lower property taxes we need to create jobs to increase tax revenue through business or educational means.

The final benefit I could bring to the table is the expeirence and knowledge of my dad who was CAO of Chilliwack, B.C. for more than 25 years.

I am running in this election because I love and care about this Valley.

I have a diploma in Business Management and work as the Sales and Marketing Director at the Best Western Plus Barclay hotel. I have had the opportunity to work and volunteer with many people in our community because of it.

In this election, the people of Port Alberni are looking for change.

Years ago we marketed ourselves as a retirement village yet we have found ourselves without enough adequate housing for the elderly or affordable housing for those who struggle.

I feel we have lost vision when it comes to essential services. I am upset that we have lost control over our watershed and know it is something we have to work together to regain.

Like many of you; I am frustrated with the lack of growth in our community.

We must be willing to

LNG, the airport, the trans shipping hub done correctly will be positive things for us however It is important that we take responsibility for our environment to ensure proper measures are upheld with these projects.

Although these are signs of grown they are not guaranteed. We will need to continue looking for new investments. Before we can do any of this, we as a city have to work on our tax base and our weakening infrastructure to seriously ask new people and companies to come and invest here.

We need a united council and I am hopeful with this election whomever is voted in that they take the time and care needed to work together for the greater good. In this election I am asking for your vote and change.

City council–AF James Edwards is the current executive director of the Huu-ay-aht First Nation and lives in Port Alberni with his wife Taira of 16 years and their two boys, Caiden and Blake.

His parents own and operate a small farm in Beaver Creek and both his brother and sister’s family live in Port Alberni.

He has worked as a contaminants technician for the CCRIFC studying fish health in the Kootenay region. In Yellowknife, as an environmental scientist and project manager, he worked for the federal government managing a major environmental reclamation project while closely working with the ministry of transportation to ensure that ice roads were built and maintained.

He worked in Ottawa as a human health scientist focused on public health

My name is Richard Muller. I have been a resident of Port Alberni for more than 40 years.

I attended Sproat Lake Elementary, A.W. Neill and graduated from Alberni District Secondary School in 1989 and took some post-secondary courses at North Island College. I have two grown daughters.

I started out heli-logging at a young age and also worked in our local mills.

After choosing to leave the forest industry, I became a commercial truck operator.

When re-elected I will work towards a simple strategic plan, one created by council that we can deal with each completely then move to the next.

City council and contaminants research, and then as a project director for the Department of National Defence where he managed the reclamation of bomb sites across Canada.

His current work with the Huu-ay-aht includes taking an active role in the potential Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility and the Port Alberni Transshipment Hub (PATH). He has an undergraduate degree in chemistry and physics, a graduate certificate in project management and a Masters of Business Administration in International Business.

Being born and raised on Vancouver Island, James and his wife Taira are happy to be back home and thankful that they can raise their boys in the Alberni Valley.

I arrived in Port Alberni 38 years ago to help my Mom and Dad set up Macleods Store on Third Avenue. Two years later I left the retail trade and became the new parts guy at Port Machine Works, a career that lasted nearly 30 years before I left to join (Canadian) Alberni Engineering in 2009.

I have two grown children, Kristen and Cody, both who are living here in the Alberni Valley.

I am a member of the Kiwanis Club of Port Alberni for more than 30 years, having the honour to be president on four occasions. In 1985 the club introduced “Our Town”, a free family fun summer program to which we celebrated our 29th to which I’ve been the Kiwanis liaison since 1993.

The Port Alberni Salmon Festival turned 43 in 2014, I joined the society in 1984 and have had the pleasure to be president for 18 terms.

I’ve had something to

I’d like to see a council that can work as a team to build and revitalize Port Alberni. From major industry to eco-tourism, fishing and farming.

My wife Jiskje and I have lived here in Port Alberni for more than 40 years. This is where our home, family and friends are and we wouldn’t live anywhere else. I starting working here at the APL (now APD) mill, then spent four years at Alpulp (now Catalyst) and from there worked the rest of my career at MacMillan and Bloedel’s Sproat Lake logging Division.

After working in various departments, I trained as a fire warden and worked in that capacity for the next 25 years. As the industry changed I had additional responsibilities as environmental coordinator and in delivering training modules to our crews.

I served as I. W. A. local union executive board member and recording secretary.

When Sproat Div. closed in 2005, I took my pension

early and have been working since then as a security officer at West Coast General Hospital.

I have since served six years on the Port Alberni Advisory Planning Commission.

I have always believed Port Alberni has a huge potential to do so much better economically.

We have so much going for us here, yet we are struggling.

I think what is needed is a shared vision and a cohesive plan before we can move forward. I think the first step is for city council to get our financial house in order and then set priorities and take on projects one at a time as we can afford them.

We need more consultation with homeowners and the business community so we can agree on what those priorities are.

Make ferries part of highway Hot gases spew from B.C. legislature BC Ferries quietly posted an ‘efficiency’ plan on the independent ferry commissioner’s website that has people living on Vancouver Island anything but quiet.

The corporation is pondering closing the ferry terminal at Departure Bay to all midIsland traffic and diverting traffic bound for the island to Duke Point and Tsawwassen.

Yes, the same run that is one of the few making pantloads of money for BC Ferries.

While BC Ferries officials noted they were only in the beginning stages of even talking about changes, and that public consultation would take place in 2015, now is the time for Vancouver Islanders to get noisy about our ferry service.

And that includes people in Port Alberni.

The ferries are not just used for passenger service to and from the Lower Mainland. They are also used to truck goods to the Island, and as such are a vital part of our province’s highway system.

So why aren’t they treated that way?

Mainlanders often scoff at Islanders and say, ‘you wanted to live on an island, you have to pay the price’. But would those Mainlanders be singing the same song if the provincial government suddenly decided to close one of their major highways or thoroughfares? Say Highway 99 or Highway 91? Telling them they can just go around?

We think not.

It’s time for Vancouver Island residents and especially businesses to take a stand and demand better ferry service.

Because we shouldn’t have to stand for our ferry service to be cut even further.

(This is similar to the Bakken shale in North Dakota, where American roughnecks continue to burn off vast amounts of gas to get at the more valuable light liquids.

Oddly, President Barack Obama and former Canadian singer Neil Young don’t notice this.)

Weaver and the NDP are correct in their main objection, which is that the B.C. government’s new limits on CO2 from LNG production are a sham.

As much as 70 per cent of the total greenhouse gas emissions from the gas industry occur before the LNG stage, which is the only thing the new rules regulate.

CO2 that comes up with gas is extracted and vented.

A government-subsidized pilot project to capture and store CO2 at Spectra Energy’s operations at Fort Nelson seems to be going nowhere.

Restricting LNG-related emissions is mostly a cosmetic gesture.

Sadly, too much of the election focus is centered on tax reduction. I would rather that consideration be given to services that enhance Port Alberni.

I, and I believe many others, do not mind paying taxes for services that benefit our community. For example, beautifying the city, maintaining our roads, sewers and water system, crime prevention, a first class fire department and excellent recreation facilities.

We need a new pool soon, the trail system needs upgrading and our uptown shopping area needs revitalization.

A new crossing of Rogers Creek would be an asset to our city. Many candidates are jumping to a conclusion to not support the crossing without giving adequate thought to the benefits. An improved connection between north and south Port Alberni will reduce response times for emergency services, provide easier access from the north side to West Coast General Hospital, and improve

connections to Echo Centre, the Multiplex, North Island College and Alberni District Secondary School.

The quoted $50/year addition to property taxes will be quickly saved by lower gasoline costs for automobile drivers as they move about Port Alberni.

In addition, candidates speak only of visually improving Johnston Road and the uptown area, yet there is no mention of Redford Street.

While Redford east of Maebelle Road is in the regional district, the area is not very appealing to a visitor to our Valley. A drive west on Redford from WCGH to Third Avenue also lacks visual appeal with empty lots, empty storefronts, overhead wires and unkempt properties.

I’m looking forward to election day with considerable

trepidation.

Damage is already done To the Editor,

Whether you vote for the Marx Brothers or the Rolling Stones for council positions will make absolutely no difference. To keep residential property taxes in line, one or two million dollars would have to be cut from next year’s civic budget. That can’t be done by contracting out, hiring freezes, or cosmetic budgetary cuts.

Instead of giving CUPE employees zero percent wage increases for two years, the current council gave them a five-year contact that is too rich. The cost of living salary increases for an already too expensive management should have been scrapped,

but weren’t. And needed cost cutting at McLean Mill, the museum, the Multiplex and perhaps the pool has been ignored.

So no matter whom you vote for, we can expect another large tax increase next year.

And talk of bike lanes, trails, bridges and a new pool is utter nonsense.

There is also very little money for necessary street and road repair.

As for the school board, you don’t have to worry about who gets in because the damage has already been done. We have the unmitigated disaster of the razing of the old ADSS and the loss of the finest auditorium on Vancouver Island (1,000 seats) with the exception of the Royal Theatre in Victoria (which is about 100 years old).

The award was presented at the ITC’s 2014 eLearning Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Catchpole is the past recipient of the BC Psychological Association’s Donald Sampson Master Teacher award (1988) for his pioneering work in educational television and public education in the

field of psychology and the Parke O. Davidson Award (2011) for significant and substantive contributions to the practice and profession of psychology.

In 2004 he was also awarded the Adjudicators’ Award from the British Columbia Innovations in Educational Technology Group for long term career achievement in the application of educational technology in educational delivery.

As an instructor with North Island College, Catchpole has piloted, implemented and provided training in a wide range of video and

on-line technologies designed to increase students’ and the public’s access to psychological knowledge. He was the first instructor to teach live classes on BC’s Knowledge Network and had a following of approximately 18,000 viewers and over 300 students each semester during his eight years on the network. He was also the original instructor for NIC’s ITV videoconferencing system 19 years ago and continues to teach courses via this technology, now joined by a large number of NIC faculty.

North Island College’s Dr. Michael Catchpole, a 35-year veteran psychology instructor at the Port Alberni campus, was recently honoured by his peers on the Instructional Technology Council (ITC) with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to building and improving the field of distance learning.

The Washington DC-based ITC is affiliated with the American Association of Community Colleges and has more than 300 college, university and corporate members.

The organization specializes in keeping its members abreast of the latest developments in online and other forms of distance education.

Catchpole was recognized both for this many years of service to the ITC and for his pioneering roles in teaching and promoting mental health through the use of technology.

In addition to classroom teaching and, until recently, private practice, Catchpole’s achievements include: ground breaking work teaching via satellite and video conference; leading international initiatives in distance

Our children have the Right to A Quality Public Education. It is the most important commodity we have. Public Education is the backbone of our country, and it ensures everyone, regardless of economic background, the Right to an Education, that will enable them to choose wisely when it come to Career Choices.

School District #70 includes not only Port Alberni, but Bamfield, Tofino, and Ucluelet too. There are fifteen schools in our District, including VAST Center and Choices, with approximate enrollment of 4,000 students.

I was employed at SD70 for over 23 years as a Custodian. I interacted with students, teachers, support staff, and management on a daily basis. I was also active in my Union.

I have a firsthand knowledge of how the School System operates.

We need to explore the possibility of initiating data from the Helping Professions into our curriculum. Data that would enhance Self Esteem Issues, and data that would help students deal with Crisis. Although we do have groups and Councillors, far too many students are still falling between the cracks. We need classes, so that it becomes the norm for all students. Too many students are acting out. Anger is pain. They need to recognize that they are not alone, and that a crisis will pass.

We need more transparency, and better communication between parents, trustees, management, teachers, and support staff! Each play an important role in supporting and improving the needs of our children. Personal power and control tactics are self-defeating, and sestructive for all! It is time to put all issues on the table an work in harmony for the good of our children. As we are an Educational System, we should take pride in setting an example on how all the Parties can work together for the good of our children’s education.

TAX RELIEF - NOT TAX INCREASES RESIDENTIAL TAXES - The city's 2014 - 2018 Financial Plan calls for an 11.5% tax increase

in 2015. We have reached the tipping point where further tax increases are simply not acceptable. The 2014 - 2018 plan also states "that the planned annual increase will not keep pace with service cost increases and reduction in services will be necessary." I believe the next mayor and council must realize it can no longer be business as usual and that the annual cycle of tax increases has to stop. They must provide oversight to cut costs - not services.

DISTRIBUTION OF TAX BURDEN- In 2006, residential taxes provided for 40% of total taxation with industrial & business paying the other 60%. In 2014, the residential proportion had risen to 58.7% and the 2014 - 2018 plan has the residential portion going to 65.1%. I realize that to attract new business, the business tax rate needs to be low. I, also, believe the present model is flawed - you don't lower business and industrial taxes by shifting the burden onto residential homeowners. What is needed is cost cutting and tax relief across the board for all.

LIQUID NATURAL GAS PLANT (LNG) AND TRANSHIPMENT HUB - There is a potentially large financial gain for our community if these projects are built: but, we must realize they hinge on attracting investors with $billions to invest and if they are built, it is years into the future.

We cannot base today's city finances on something that may happen in the future. We must stay grounded in today's reality and live within our means.

WATERSHED PROTECTION - I believe the next council should join in with local groups and vigorously lobby the provincial government to

negotiate a swap of crown lands for Island Timberlands private lands in the China Creek Watershed. It should be a priority to bring our primary water supply under local government control and protection.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, the 13th annual World Craft Bazaar is coming to Port Alberni.

Originally started 23 years ago in Courtenay by David Talbot, the craft bazaar has spread all across Vancouver Island, from Campbell River to Duncan to Port Alberni.

Mayba, who was a social worker before retiring last year, said that he was motivated by a desire to “give artisans from the developing world an opportunity to come out on a level playing field” rather than having their goods sold at big box stores that would take a larger cut of the profits.

“It gives something back to the community where it was made,” said Mayba, adding that fair trade goods are “the gift that gives twice.”

He’s hoping that the craft bazaar will not only give people a chance to stock up on Christmas presents

early but also “get people thinking about the disparities and inequalities between Third World countries and us.”

The personal connection is made possible by the vendors, including 10,000 Villages, Barefoot Books Ambassadors and Mystic Lotus Imports, who visit the artisans’

Mail-in voting will only be available for Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District directors and School District 70 trustees for the Nov. 15 municipal elections.

“We offer mail ballot voting because we have a lot of rural and remote voters,” said chief election officer Wendy Thompson, as well as residents who live in and own property in the regional district but are employed elsewhere.

Wondering Reviewer

I have read a lot of high-profile fantasy/fiction novels, but I must admit that this rather unknown novel was one of the most imaginative that I have read in a long time. The Seems: the Glitch in Sleep by John Hulme and Michael Wexler introduces readers to the world behind the world. Remember the rain two weeks ago? Or that dream you had last night? Well there was someone working in the Seems, the world behind the scenes, who was responsible for that. But sometimes things go wrong in this fantastical place. The people who are brought into fix these problems are called Fixers. They only come from the Real World. Cue, Becker Drane.

A seemingly ordinary twelve year old boy from New Jersey, Becker has the best job in the world. After taking a random questionnaire in a coffee shop, he is selected for the elite position. One of only 37 Fixers in the Seems, Becker must fix Glitches before they make it out into the Real World. On his first assignment, he must fix a Glitch in the Department of Sleep.

When I read The Glitch in Sleep, I was blown away by the amount of detail in this imaginative book. Who would have guessed that there is a world that runs our world?

After I finished it, I wanted more than anything to visit the Seems. I, for one, would love to work in the department of dreams, or sample new creations in the labs that invent new fruits, or paint sunsets (yes, that is a job). Does this world really exist?

Well, if Becker can’t Fix the Glitch in Sleep, it might all come crashing down. Can he save the world before it’s too . . . early?

ou are what you eat” is a saying that can mean so many different things to people. With the increasing amount of information about food and nutrition, it is difficult to know what to choose.

As the awareness of health increases, most people understand that food can impact the chances of developing certain conditions and diseases as they get older. As men age, the risk of prostate cancer rises each decade.

It is thought to be a lifestyle disease similar to heart disease, diabetes and other forms of cancer.

Therefore, following a heart healthy lifestyle has been shown to protect men from developing this most common form of cancer.

General recommendations for a cancer prevention diet include eating more of a variety of

vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans (legumes), avoiding sugary drinks and high calorie foods, limiting consumption of red meats, while avoiding processed, cured meats, such as salami, bologna and pepperoni and limiting salty and packaged high sodium foods.

Vitamin D There is evidence suggesting a lack of vitamin D (sunshine vitamin) may be a risk factor for developing prostate and other

forms of cancer. A third of the Canadian population has a vitamin D deficiency, and therefore it’s recommended to take a daily supplement of 1000IU vitamin D for good health and cancer prevention.

Tomato Products Risk of developing prostate cancer may be lowered by eating tomato-based foods, such as pasta sauce, tomato juice/soup and paste. These foods are high in lycopene, which acts as an antioxidant.

Studies show that it’s more beneficial to eat foods rich in lycopene than taking the supplemental/pill form.

Soy Including tofu, soy milk and other foods made with soy beans has been shown to give men a protective advantage against developing prostate cancer.

Research indicates that food sources are safer than supplemental doses.

Flaxseed Ground flaxseed is another food source of isoflavones in the diet. Flaxseeds also contain other protective qualities, such as omega-3 fatty acids, lignans and fibre which have heart healthy benefits. Flaxseed oil doesn’t contain the plant estrogen or fibre and isn’t a good replacement for the ground flaxseeds.

Fish Heart healthy diet includes eating fish regularly for their omega-3 fatty acid nutrition. Intake of fish twice weekly, such as salmon, sardines, oysters or tuna will offer these important cardiovascular benefits.

If eating fish is not part of your regular diet, taking an omega-3 or fish oil supplement will provide these essential fatty acids.

Selenium Selenium deficiency may be a risk factor for developing prostate and other

cancers in North America. This may be related to the fact that there is a lack of this trace mineral in the soil in the Pacific Northwest and some locally grown foods may not have much selenium content.

The greatest benefit of the addition of selenium-rich foods are shown in those men who are deficient.

A brazil nut will provide 100 per cent of the recommended daily allowance. Small amounts of selenium are also found in whole wheat, barley, tuna and turkey (depending on where the food was grown or raised).

Vitamin E Vitamin E is a fatsoluble vitamin that works in concert with selenium. If an individual is following a low fat diet, their intake of foods rich in vitamin E may be too low. A couple of surefire ways to get some vitamin E through diet would be to eat ¼ cup of almonds or sunflower seeds regularly. Also, a general multiple vitamin/mineral would offer a reasonable amount of this important vitamin,

along with a small amount of selenium micromineral.

A single dose supplement of vitamin E is generally not advised, as it has been associated with adverse effects in those with heart disease and diabetes.

Pomegranates Pomegranates are rich in polyphenols, which act as potent antioxidants. There is emerging evidence that demonstrates that this fruit can offer some protection for men and prostate cancer.

Green and orange vegetables Dark, colourful vegetables and fruits are a powerhouse of nutrition due to their phytochemical (or plant chemical) content.

Phytochemicals are responsible for the flavour, colour and odor of plant foods.

To ensure adequate levels of these potent antioxidants, include a dark orange and a dark green vegetable daily. A minimum of five different colours of produce daily will give the body a good variety of healthful phytochemicals.

Get active Daily activity is also an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. Men are encouraged to find ways to have regular aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking, swimming, and cycling. Plus, to help prevent bone loss and strengthen lean muscle, some form of regular weight training will help to reduce fatique and maintain good quality of life in men of all ages.

With the amount of recreation programs and sports club drop-in opportunities in Port Alberni, there is no excuse for not having fun while being active.

PORT ALBERNI— Aubrey Rayner only started competing in BMX bike races this year, but right away won 10 straight events to make it to expert class, which helped her leave her mark on the sport.

The 10-year-old Huuay-aht youth, who lives in Parksville, discovered the sport about eight months ago, and since then she has been winning races and having a lot of fun.

“I’ve always liked biking,” she says. “I used to mountain bike, but this is so much fun, and I really like to compete now.”

Since she started racing, Rayner has won a number of Vancouver Island championships in both girls class and cruiser races. The girls’ class features a 20-inch wheel on the bike and cruiser is for a 24-inch wheel.

At the end of the season, Rayner placed second in the province on her class bike. She was ranked fifth in class and fourth in cruiser going into the Grand National race in Chilliwack Oct. 10–12.

racing. Next year she will be given the No. 4 in class and No. 2 in cruiser.

The Grand Nationals mark the official end of the season for Rayner, but she says that doesn’t mean she won’t be riding this winter. She says

she will be training and racing at the Abbotsford indoor track, as well as in the United States at the Peninsula indoor track.

She says she loves the sport because it is something she gets to do with her father, Stephen Rayner.

“My dad and I ride a lot together, it’s how I got started.”

And with the offseason ahead of her, she plans on doing a lot of riding with her dad.

“I really enjoy having something I can do with my dad,” she says. “I ride my bike with my friends, but they don’t do this kind of thing.”

She says through the sport she has made lots of friends, and she looks forward to continuing next season. She says lots of girls are getting into the sport, and that makes it a lot of fun.

As for her future goals, she wants to go to the Olympics.

“Next year I want to be No. 1,” she says, “so I have to keep riding my bike lots and training hard.”

With a new board of directors and a new monthly meeting place, Alberni Art Rave is looking to make the 2015 event better than ever.Their new board of directors includes Colleen Clancy as executive chair, Terry Deakin as vice chair, C. The Rollin Art Centre held its first annual pumpkin carving contest voting on Halloween night.

With plenty of jacko-lanterns to choose from it was hard to pick the winners.

Although the rain kept many away, the brave battled the storm to make very creative carved pumpkins for our wonderful family event. Look for this family event to return next year.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL – DIVE SERVICES Purpose and Background: Cermaq Canada is seeking RFP’s for dive services to be undertaken at its saltwater operations located in the Tofino, Campbell River and Port McNeill areas. Proposals can be made for part or all of the service areas.

Scope of Work: The service required by Cermaq Canada farm sites will include but are not limited to the following: • Mortality Extraction • Net Maintenance • Sea Site Inspections • Other Project work as directed by Cermaq Canada The service provider will need to provide the following requirements: • dive crews able to provide a combination of Surface Supply and SCUBA that will meet or exceed all WorkSafeBC regulations, each with their own crew boat • Cermaq may require additional dive crews based on an “as needed basisâ€? • The service provider will represent and warrant to Cermaq that it possesses all equipment and certifications necessary to perform the services. • The service provider must provide all equipment necessary for the performance of the Services, including, but not limited to the following: - safety and bio security gear, including lifejackets, boots and raingear A dive service information package is available upon request once we have received a signed confidentiality agreement, also available by request.

Key accountabilities: • Basic operation and maintenance of automatic feeders and other hatchery equipment.

• Efficient fish handling (smolt transfers, grading, vaccination).

Black Sheep dominate in Nanaimo Ty Shannon scored two tries—converting one—and two penalty goals to lead the Port Alberni Black Sheep to a commanding 33–8 road victory against Nanaimo Hornets on Saturday.

“Ty was very dangerous,” Black Sheep head coach Jas Purewal said.

Shannon opened scoring for the Black Sheep with a penalty kick, and scored twice in the second half to allow the Sheep to pull away from Nanaimo for good,

ensuring the win.

Mike Nelson scored on a pick and go in the corner, Riley Savard banged one in and Brennan Tourangeau added the insurance try to give Port Alberni the win.

“The first 20 minutes of the first half we absolutely

dominated,” Purewal said. “Really, the best rugby we played all year was in the first 20 minutes.”

“We are giving him an opportunity to go to a team where he’ll get more playing minutes and a bigger role,” said Alberni Valley Bulldogs general manager and head coach Kevin Willison. “Zach has been a great kid since day one and we wish him all the very best.”

The Bulldogs also released 1995-born forward Joshua Smith, who had come to the team by way of Coquitlam Express.

With roster space now created, the Alberni Valley Bulldogs have signed 1996-born forward Justin Marreck.

The 6’3, 200-pound forward spent all of

last season with the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League.

“We’re happy to welcome Justin to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. He will give us some size and grit on the front end and we look forward to seeing him grow as a hockey player while he’s with the team,” said Willison.

Marreck was a member of the 2012 bronze medalwinning Team BC that competed in the WHL U16 Western Challenge Cup in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and was coached by Bulldogs’ assistant coach/ GM Adam Hayduk.

The Bulldogs have also added AP Marcus Russell to the team (wearing No. 26) for the time being.

The Bulldogs are on the road this Friday, Nov. 7 when they head to Frank Crane Arena in Nanaimo to meet the Clippers (7 p.m.).

They’re home on Sunday, Nov. 9 for a 2 p.m. matinee with the Powell River Kings.

The teams meet again in Powell River on Tuesday, Nov. 11 for another matinee.
