10 Neat Things by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Fairy Gardens

1. What is Fairy Gardening? Even after the outdoor gardening season has drawn to a close. there are ways to give your green thumb a place to tend year-round. Fairy gardening is a way of creating a magical miniature garden in a container indoors. You can let your imagination run wild when creating a make-believe landscape, turning pint-size plants into huge trees and colourful pebbles into a rock garden. 2. Not a New Fad. Fairy gardening has been around for over 100 years. It is believed to have first debuted in the US in 1893 with bonsai dish gardens, inspired by the Japanese Pavilion at the Chicago World’s Fair. Soon thereafter, the New York Times featured these miniature creations in an article. 3. Plant it and They may Come. A fairy garden is a tiny space created and tended with love. By using accessories from miniature houses to benches, gazing balls, fences and even tea sets you create an inviting and cozy place for fairies to rest. Who knows: if you build it, they might just come. 4. Find a Theme. Woodland themes - inspired by ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Tinkerbell’ - are the most popular themes for fairy gardens. With ferns, mosses and wishing wells, clustered around a small cottage, they give a traditional look. There is no need to stop there. Your imagination can take you to different places altogether. How about a beachthemed garden with succulents, sand and umbrellas? 5. The Right Container for the Job. Make sure the container you pick for your fairy garden fits the theme you want to capture. A glazed pot in earth tones will fit a woodland theme perfectly. If you want to work with sand and succulents, a terracotta pot might be more suitable. 6. Think Outside the Pot. Old-fashioned tea cups, galvanized pails and glass bowls are just some of the other vessels that might work for your fairy garden. Ideally, the container will have good drainage and you should always use a layer of pebbles under some well-draining potting soil to ensure you can water and fertilize your plants properly. 7. Small is Beautiful. One key to fairy gardening is to maintain the illusion of a miniature world by choosing elements that will remain true to the tiny scale. You should avoid fast-growing plants, such as ivies or vines, because they can get out of hand and take over your quaint scene in no time. Instead, opt for delicate, slow-growing plants and plants that can be pruned back when they do grow too large. 8. Planting with Endless Opportunity. Some perfect groundcovers, imitating grass, are mosses and herbs such as thyme. Ferns and miniature conifers can provide that perfect tree-like look and plants with a shrub-like growth, such as polka dot plants, imitate bushes. Lay out your plantings and then use fine bark mulch, small pebbles and colourful sand to create walking paths. Glazed tiles or flat stones make a great patio. 9. Create a Scene. When you have your landscape in place, it is time to add the finishing touches. Have a look around your home and see if you have any special items you want to incorporate. Maybe you have some pretty rocks you found on a walk or some small shells from your last beach vacation? A small clay pot, half buried on its side and covered in moss and ferns makes a great hobbit hole. And of course, there is a multitude of accessories available and a sprinkle of fairy dust will bring it all together. 10. Want More Help? Do you want to create a fairy garden, but would like some more inspiration? Come to the fairy garden workshop at Top Crop in Cranbrook on Saturday, November 8, at 11 am. Our fairy gardener will show you some techniques and design ideas to create your own enchanted space. Call or stop by the store to sign up.

Bennett wants more pay for Columbia River By Tom Fletcher

Energy Minister Bill Bennett caused a stir at a conference on the Columbia River treaty with a speech calling for the U.S. government to pay more for the power and flood protection they receive. Bennett was in Spokane last week to address the Columbia River Basin Transboundary Conference. In an interview after his speech, he said it was the first time B.C. has laid out its expectations for the 50-year-old treaty. “I didn’t get any discourteous responses Photo Wikimedia Commons

“Scotty’s House of Hope” Open House Saturday November 1st 2014 2:00pm to 6:00pm

“Scotty’s House of Hope” located at 202 13th Ave South Cranbrook, BC will be holding an Open House for the public. from the audience, but I think there were definitely a few people who were a bit shocked,” Bennett said. “I think there are a lot of folks here in the U.S. who think that the $150 million we get is more than what we should get each year, and I said I don’t think it’s nearly enough.” The annual payment represents half the value of electricity generated downstream of dams on the Columbia River. After the treaty took effect in 1964, BC Hydro constructed the Mica, Duncan and Hugh Keenleyside dams on the Columbia system, with the help of a $275 million payment from the U.S. government. The treaty was reached by Prime Minister

John Diefenbaker and U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower after devastating floods in 1948 that destroyed the community of Vanport, Ore. On the B.C. side, the flood left most of the lower part of Trail B.C. underwater and destroyed crops at Creston. Bennett said both the cost of the dams to B.C. farmland and wetlands, and the value of flood control to the U.S., are not well recognized south of the border. “At one time the land around Arrow Lake produced more fruit and vegetables than the Okanagan,” he said. “Back in the ‘50s it was a very fertile valley and it’s all underwater now. So the people on our side of the border really want us to get

some more resources to enhance fish and wildlife and agriculture in Canada.” The treaty has no expiry date, but contains a provision that either side can give 10 years’ notice to cancel it. B.C. announced last March that it wants to continue the treaty and discuss the terms. Bennett said the U.S. government has given no indication of its intentions, and has no obligation to do so. State and local officials in Washington and Oregon recently questioned whether the existing payments should continue, but that has subsided recently, he said.

No “N” leads to an arrest The passenger of a vehicle was arrested Friday night (Oct 24) after police noted the driver did not display an “N” as required. Kimberley RCMP were conducting a road check just east of Kimberley on highway 95A when the incident took place. Upon approach police asked the driver for her license, she produced an N license and police noted there was no N visible on the back of the vehicle. Police did further checks on the vehicle and saw that it had been involved in an impaired driving investigation a year ago, a review of the file found the accused was wanted. Believing the passenger may be the subject of an arrest warrant police asked for some identi-

fication, once identity was confirmed he was arrested. He had failed to attend court on the impaired driving charge and is now facing another charge of Fail to Attend court. Two other drivers were issued violations tickets the same night for failing to possess a valid driver’s license. In the first instance an officer checked a vehicle and found the driver’s license of the registered owner had been suspended. The vehicle was stopped and police confirmed identity of the driver. During discussion it was learned that the subject was behind in his family maintenance payments and his driver’s license was suspended. In the second case dur-

ing the road check an officer asked a driver for his license. He said he didn’t have it but was only going a short distance. This immediately raised suspicion. A check found the driver had not held a valid license for four years. In 2010 the driver had been the subject to an impaired driving investigation and his driving privileges revoked. Although he was not long prohibited from driving he failed to get a new license. He told police he thought it was automatically reinstated. The procrastination was likely due to money owing for fines.

Alcohol suspected in recent crash

Photo submitted

Kimberley RCMP recently arrested a driver that supplied a “Fail” result on a roadside screen device. Submitted Kimberley RCMP, Fire Department and BC Ambulance all attended a crash on Hwy 95A at Rotary Drive on Oct 23 at 5:30 pm that was caused by an impaired driver. The driver, a 24-year old female from Cranbrook failed to stop before turning

left onto highway 95A from Rotary Drive, near Black Bear Bridge, and then entered the opposing lane hitting on oncoming vehicle head on. Once on scene police quickly noted the driver showed signs of alcohol consumption and entered into an impaired driving investigation.

www.kootenayadvertiser.com A5 The officer read the breath demand and the driver supplied a breath sample into the Roadside Screen Device which was a “Fail”. The subject was then taken back to the detachment where two more breath samples were obtained on a Breathalyzer; both those samples were over the legal limit. Police are recommending charges of Impaired Driving causing Bodily Harm. The other driver was taken to East Kootenay Regional Hospital with injuries to her leg and collar bone, the extent of those injuries is unknown. The passenger of the vehicle was also taken to hospital with minor injuries. There is a common misconception that impaired drivers are only out at night. Police are on the lookout for impaired drivers at all times. Remember if you drink, don’t drive.

Difficult birth for LNG cash cow B.C. Views by Tom Fltecher Debate is underway on the B.C. Liberal government’s tax and environmental plan for liquefied natural gas exports, amid the usual political theatre. Most media reported that the government “slashed” its proposed seven-per-cent LNG processing income tax by half, caving in to demands of international energy giants led by Petronas of Malaysia. The 3.5 per cent tax wouldn’t even take full

effect until the massive capital investment is written down, and would rise to five per cent after 20 years of production. All of this casts further doubt on Premier Christy Clark’s extravagant election campaign promise to use LNG revenues to wipe out B.C.’s debt, currently approaching $70 billion, and provide an Alberta-style “prosperity fund” to perform further miracles. The seven per cent figure was the top end of the range presented this spring while negotia-

by James Elliott To the great citizens of Cranbrook I am James Elliott. I was born in a small town of Princeton, BC. I was the fourth born of five. I have three children, Gary, Melanie and Michelle and wife Wendy who is my support system. I worked for the City of Cranbrook for 30 years, retiring early as a public works supervisor. We chose to live here. We love this city. It is our home.

I totally understand the frustration of the taxpayers. We pay more and we get less. It was spoken in the paper by the Mayor and council that in order to maintain the level of service we must raise taxes. Are you kidding me? First off where is the residential snow plowing? The sidewalk plowing? The crack sealing? The curb maintenance? The downtown cleaning? The valve exercising? The manhole maintenance? The sidewalk maintenance? Pothole repairs? Where is the manpower? The equipment gone? This list goes on and on. So we pay more taxes and get less? Is this the future of our great city? It is up to council to ask the business sector what council can do for you and not what they can do for council. How long can business continue to absorb the great tax gobble?

tions with LNG investors were ongoing, so it’s not really accurate to say it was “slashed.” This cash calf hasn’t been born yet, and it remains to be seen if it will survive. Finance Minister Mike de Jong pointed out some of the shifts in the global gas market that have reduced expectations. Japan, one of the potential investors, is considering restarting its nuclear plants as it recovers from the 2011 Fukushima earthquake. China’s manic growth is slowing, and it has signed a long-term deal to import cheaper Russian pipeline gas. Oil prices have dropped. The government’s In order to keep the level of service we must first “squash” the wish list brought forward by the departments and redo the over-inflated budget. I spent three weeks cutting costs I believed were needed. A great deal of this budget is filled with input errors and exaggerated costs of such a degree that if we cut these out of the budget we can use these monies to do more roads and preventative maintenance. There is so much to share but not enough words can say how disappointed I am about the direction council has chosen. The taxpayers need a break, and not a “break them” one! My last thing is that I have no sponsors, spent no monies on signs, no flyers and no paid advertising. I choose to give a donation to breast cancer monies that would have been spent on this. Thanks so very much for this opportunity to share my thoughts with the “taxpayers and future taxpayers” of this great city.

change of tone started with the recent throne speech, which emphasized the fate of B.C.’s only current export market. “Like forestry, B.C.’s natural gas industry has relied on exports to the United States,” the speech observed. “But the American shale gas revolution has meant the export south has dried up – and is never coming back.” So before B.C. gets to that prosperity fund, it’s got to stop the bleeding. You may recall it was a U.S. hurricane-induced spike in gas revenues that allowed the province to spread an extra billion to calm its labour waters for the 2010

Olympics. The finance ministry estimates that after the startup period, a medium-sized LNG export operation would pay total taxes of around $800 million a year to the province. De Jong notes that this is more revenue than B.C. will collect from the entire forest industry this year, from a single plant. There are 18 currently proposed. This new LNG income tax is nowhere near the biggest source. It’s bigger than the carbon tax that LNG producers will pay on fuel use, but only a fourth of what B.C. collects in royalties for selling the gas. The biggest source

of revenue from this hoped-for plant is “other taxes,” which include sales tax and corporate income tax, which B.C. increased to 11 per cent last year. University of Calgary economist Jack Mintz, who supported B.C. on its ill-fated harmonized sales tax, says this additional LNG tax is wrong-headed at any rate. “If other provinces take the same view with respect to resource taxation, new levies would be applied to oil refining, forest product manufacturing, mining processing and a host of other activities linked to resource industries,” Mintz wrote last week in

the Financial Post. If B.C. does get a substantial LNG export industry, it will include gas from Alberta, with royalties going there, not here. And companies are also wrangling with the federal government over its taxes, with local governments and First Nations still in line for their cut. The big question isn’t whether B.C. will get its fair share. It’s whether there will be anything to share. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Dragon’s Den without the inherent drama Submitted

Learn how to pitch your idea to investors at KRIC workshop. If your business idea is a winner but you lack the start-up cash, you need an investor. But how do you find one? Did you know about organizations of investors, whole groups of ‘angels’—like Dragons, but without the drama—who continually seek worthy business ideas to invest in? Now you know. The key to reaching them is easier than you think— and you don’t have to appear on TV, either. KRIC is hosting two workshops on investment in November featuring one of Canada’s preeminent businessinvestor experts, Mike Volker. Attract Investors to Grow Your Business are half-day3-hour workshops that will run in Sparwood and Cranbrook on November 5 and 6, respectively. These Discovery Foundation seminars, also supported by the Elk Valley Economic Initiative, will cover what you need to build a compelling business case and attract investment. Volker is a seasoned entrepreneur and investor in the tech start-up field and will share his practical experiences and tips throughout the seminars. He recently authored the e-book Making the Business Case. “I hear hundreds of pitches every year from budding entrepreneurs,” Volker said. “Their main challenge is making the business case.” Volker said the main reason for making a business case is to convince yourself and others that it makes sense to pursue a specific business opportunity. “If you’ve ever watched TV programs like Dragons Den, you’ll see what I mean. So many wannabe entrepreneurs have no idea – or often a very naive idea – as to how to build their business and make a profit.” Topics covered will include: Angel Investing 101; Elements of a com-

pelling business case, and the tough questions you need to ask yourself;

Review of elevator pitches, investor pitches, and cap tables; Practical tips and per-

sonal stories from an active angel investor and high-technology entrepreneur.

Hugs: To the staff that work at a group home in Cranbrook. I visited there on October 20. Unfortunately I had an accident while there. A big hug to the staff Trevor and Jen and a thank you hug to the residents, as they were all concerned for me. May God bless you all, I love all of you! Slugs: To all the first responders that were invited to a BBQ at the Legion, which was free and not one person showed up. Hugs: Back breaking, rib cracking humungous hugs to Cranbrook’s Save On Foods store management for replacing the grocery carts with those streamlined, smooth running new carts. They are a treat to use. I wished I was a youngster again instead of an 80 year old woman so I could jump on them and go for a ride. Thank you. Hugs: Huge Hugs to Shane and all the staff at Beachcombers Hot Tubs for your great customer service and always friendly and helpful advise on everything you do there....We greatly appreciate your dedication to your business. Thanks so much everyone !!!

Hugs: A great big warm hug to all you “locals” who continue to denigrate your neighbors to the east as if we were somehow responsible for every bad thing that ever happens in the Kootenays. You all deserve a slug but maybe all you need is a hug. XOXO Hugs: Many thanks to the gal driving the Honda Odyssey with “Cranbrook Mitsubishi” stenciled on the back, for paying for my lunch at the Tim Horton’s drive through on Monday, October 27. That was very kind of you!!! Thanks again!! Hugs: To the businesses that lowered their Canadian flags to half mast last week to show respect for the fallen soldier in Ottawa. Hugs: Big Hugs to Integra Tire for the warm hello and a smile I get every time I walk through the door. Not to forget the guys that work outside on my car when I go to say Thank You for the work done, busy as they are they always take time to give you a wave and a smile. Service with a smile and boy do they know their stuff!

Earlier this summer members from the Yahk Kingsgate Recreation Society (YKRS) lent a hand and watched for hole-in-one possibilities at the BPNS Golf Tournament in support of EKFH (East Kootenay Foundation for Health). Signature sponsors Boston Pizza (Trevor & Angela Gordon) and Northstar (Derek & Pat Spring) wanted to thank the volunteer’s for their spirit and support and made a $500 donation to YKRS

which was delivered this week by EKFH’s Executive Director Donna Grainger. The Society is a very active group and continually organizes socials and activities for the community, welcomes others to its annual Fall Fair and encourages visits and a stop at the Yahk Community Hall, most recently by the Cops for Kids. YKRS President Judy Dickson was excited and surprised by the BPNS donation. Judy reports it will be put to use immediately by providing supporting funds

Obituaries

Obituaries OBITUARY

Katherine Storch January 17, 1928-October 13, 2014 Katherine Storch passed away suddenly in Calgary, AB, October 13, 2014 at the age of 86. She was born in a small town near Frankfurt, Germany, growing up in hard times with little time to play. While in Germany she married Henry and it was here that three of their children were born. The family immigrated to Canada in 1957 and settled in Calgary, Alberta where the youngest Harry was born. They moved to Cranbrook in 1970 where Katherine took pride in maintaining her home and garden. She and Henry enjoyed the summers outdoors, spending time with friends and family, and also spent many winters down south. After Henry passed away in 2004, Katherine moved to Calgary where she resided for a time with Harry and his wife Mary Ann. The last few years were difficult for her due to many health issues but she maintained her fighting spirit and sense of humor. Even into her 80s she continued to enjoy her love of dancing with special friend Nick. Katherine was predeceased by her parents, brother Walter, husband and son Harry (2008). She is survived by her brother Hans in Germany, sons Robert (Ingrid) and Alfred (Judy), daughter Irma (Bill) Frankish, 6 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Katherine will always be remembered for her dedication to family, her humor and sharp wit. A celebration of Katherine's life will be held at Alfred and Judy's home in Calgary, November 1st from 1-4pm.

Travelling a historic road in a car for the 21st century

Question of the Week

Chuckanut Drive is a winding, scenic, during my time in the Prius v, which is mostly coastal and historic driving route right in the ballpark. in Washington State. An interesting historical footnote, at one time (in the late 19th century, Edison was a community of Utopian Socialists known as the Equality Colony). Not sure if I’ll ever get completely comfortable with the central instrument panel in a Prius. A switch button on the dash that changed kilometres to miles, however, was brilliantly simple and perfect for this trip. My biggest beef with the Prius v was cabin road noise at high speeds. Depending on the highway surface it can be so loud that it’s hard to converse with a front passenger. Bigger and better, the Prius v offers the functionality and versatility of a wagon, for a relatively small price premium. Toyota’s tried and trusted Hybrid Synergy Drive system offers outstanding fuel economy and surprisingly good power, when needed. However, his rave reviews extend beyond the walls of academia to the pavement of the Pacific Traffic Education Centre (PTEC), abutting the

Pitt Meadows Airport. As part of the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC), PTEC is a driver-training facility for police and other first responders. It’s also where the UBC Sports Car Club, established in 1956, holds its Autocross 101 training programs. This is where you’ll find Professor Marziali providing drivers new to the sport with science-based racing theory before riding shotgun with them to deliver one-on-one in-car training. Autocross racing is a sanctioned and regulated form of grassroots competition that enables participants to

out to create a circuitous web of challenging segments that flow from one to the other, and include such elements as offset gates, diminishing radius turns, long sweeping turns, G-circles, and the everpopular inline slalom, define the course. While speed plays a role in the competition, science and driving ability carry the day. Understanding the limitations of tire grip and the physics of momentum and inertia help a driver anticipate and manage the effects of understeer and oversteer. As world-champion rally racer Colin McRae once said, “straight roads are for fast cars, turns are for fast drivers.” Knowing the fastest line to follow through each corner, gate, and slalom is where savvy drivers makeup time. Skill is the great equalizer for horsepower. Autocross courses are heavily skill-dependent, not horsepower hungry. Artistry and finesse trump raw power every time, especially when the Professional Autocross Index – otherwise known as PAX – is applied. PAX is a weighting system similar to a handicap in golf. It is a method of evening the playing field – or in this case, track – that requires a driver in a Ferrari to drive equally as well as a driver in a Honda Civic to score similar points. The reality is that most drivers race cars that are largely stock street-legal vehicles, which also serve as their daily driver. Most legitimate sports car clubs provide driver training opportunities for autocross racing, and in some cases driver-training on a bona fide race track. The UBC Sports Car Club generally holds two Autocross 101 programs per year. I recently attended the end-of-summer session held at the PTEC facility. My 19-year old son Austin was invited to participate, which he eagerly did using a 2015 Scion FR-S graciously supplied by Toyota Canada. The class consisted of 19 drivers, three of them female. Ages ran the gamut from fresh-face teenagers to empty nesters with newfound vitality and wheels to match. The UBC Sports Car Club driving instructors are all exceptionally talented, capable, and safety minded. A ratio of two students per instructor ensures that everyone is given personal instruction specific to their needs and ability. Austin and Jordan – a 4th year UBC student of mechanical engineering, driving his modified 70s Datsun 510 – were assigned to Professor Marziali for the day. A patch of clean pavement served as a chalkboard for our high-revving prof as he led his students through the physics of cornering and the inherent limitations of the four small contact-patches uniting road and vehicle. After students walked and analyzed the course with their respective instructors, the outdoor classroom was traded for the car. With instructors seated next to them, students

Zack Spencer

By Zack Spencer It is often lamented that many of the concept cars at the international auto shows never see the light of day as production vehicles. Well, the Cadillac ELR looks every bit like a futuristic concept and it is available today. This car is something to see, especially in person, with sweeping lines and aggres-

sive front lights, like a spaceship. In fact it won the 2013 Eyes on Design Award at the North American International Auto Show, an award judged by all of the heads of design form each automaker in attendance…that’s some judging panel At first glance it has more than a passing resemblance to the Cadillac CTS Coupe but underneath is a very different platform. Looks This is essentially the Chevrolet Volt electric car, morphed into a Cadillac, with two fewer doors. Taking what Cadillac learned from the CTS coupe and transplanting that look onto an electric car has made the ELR a high-end electric alternative, to say a Tesla. The two-door design has hidden electronic door handles that release by touching a pad inside the recessed door handle. Not to worry, there is a redundant mechanical mechanism. The 20-inch wheels have specially designed tires for efficiency and handling. The trunk is a good size for a small sporty coupe, but it is the front where all the jewelry is showcased. The

headlamps are stunning to see during the day or at night. The vertical daytime running light are Cadillac’s signature now and they look fantastic. The LED headlamps along with rear LED lights make this a true luxury product. Inside The same futuristic and luxury approach continues on the inside. The materials used are spectacular, rich and welcoming. Cadillac combines alcantara (faux suede), chrome, wood, hand cut and sown leather seats and available carbon fibre. This combination of colours and textures, combined with the sweeping shape is first rate. This interior can stand on its own with any other luxury brand. Cadillac uses the same Cue infotainment and communications system throughout its line of products and it features a rich graphics package with cutting edge connectivity. But this car isn’t without fault. The touch sensitive centre console isn’t for everyone; some might prefer traditional knobs and buttons and the high gloss surfaces can show dirt quickly. Then there is the back seat or lack of. This isn’t a four-seat car but a two-seater with storage for a gym bag. Why this has back seats is a mystery. Drive The Chevrolet Volt is the best selling electric car in Canada, not the Tesla or the Nissan LEAF. People have come to realize that the combination of electric range and a gasoline-extending generator is a good compromise; it isn’t all electric or nothing. The ELR, just like the Volt it is based on, is plugged in and charged, usually overnight. It

takes more than 12-hours on a typical 120V plug to get the job done or about five hours on a more powerful 240V system. Once charged, the car runs on electricity for about 65 km before the gasoline extender kicks in to allow the driver to run up to 480km, or longer, if the car is refueled. The 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and the electric motor puts out 295 lb.-ft of torque to the front wheels, similar power to the Cadillac 3.6-litre gasoline engine used in other products. One way to extend the electric range is to use regenerative braking to help recharge the battery. The paddle shifters behind the steering wheel do that. The driver can use these in combination with the regular brake to modulate driving. It takes practice but is kind of fun. Verdict Here is the part that is hard to swallow, the price. The ELR starts at $78,250-- lot of money for any car. This is a very limited market, a two-door sporty looking Cadillac that is also electric. If they made this into a sexy 4-door, the ELR would have more takers. As it stands, Telsa seems to have that market cornered for sexy and expensive electric cars. What the Cadillac has over the Tesla is a world-class interior, something Tesla has fallen short on. On the flipside, Tesla has a huge available electric range without the aid of a gasoline engine. So the market for the ELR is limited. If you are in the market for a two door futuristic ready to drive concept car, this one is very well executed; it turns heads everywhere it goes. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Alfa Romeo sedan, sort of anyway. He never really got it started. Best diagnosis from our Alfa Romeo fans is the failure of something called a thermostatic actuator. We’re not making that up. I swear. 2. “The Big Lebowski,” 1973 Ford Gran Torino: Jeff Bridges’ character Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski is a man that the narrator opined “might be the laziest man in Los Angeles County, which would place him high in the running for laziest man worldwide.” He’s also a man who wrote a check in the amount of 69 cents for a carton of half and half and he drives a 1973 Ford Torino that was evidently some sort of shade of white, yellow, beige or gold prior to acquiring its as-filmed “patina” of rust, dents and primer spots. 3. “Body Heat,” 1964 Corvette: William Hurt plays an easily duped ambulance chaser of a Florida lawyer in this neo-noir classic. In addition to the fact that Kathleen Turner delivered a star-making performance in the film, we love it for the faded and disheveled but totally original Riverside Red ’64 Corvette convertible that Hurt’s character drives. 4. “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo: Jim Carey’s character “Ace Ventura” obviously cares more about the animals he is searching for than the car he is driving. Things go south almost immediately for Ace as his Monte Carlo is pummeled shortly after the opening credits by an angry man with a baseball bat. He is forced to spend the rest of the movie driving around with his head hanging out of the window, much like his canine companions. 5. Joe Dirt,” 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona: David Spade’s eponymous character drives a beat-to-hell ’69 Dodge Daytona, which probably gave at least a few MOPAR enthusiasts a stroke mid-movie. Like Mr. Dirt’s mullet, the Daytona is all business up front, party in the back, featuring an ultraaerodynamic nose cone and a rear wing of comical proportions. Heading out on the Altimate Rogue Trip roadside ghost towns that inspired the Cars movies, who said they’re just for kids? And in New Mexico and Arizona my eyes will be scanning for locations featured in the Breaking Bad TV series. We’re camping under the stars in the Grand Canyon. Sheesh! The last time I was under canvas was about 25 years ago when I accompanied my son Niall to his Beaver camp. An overnight stay at the El Travatore Motel, in Bullhead City, AZ, where we pick a theme room, quickly follows that chill night. Elvis Presley or Marilyn Monroe? Wonder if this drive was on their bucket list. The organizers suggested we swap partners part way across before fights break out. My drive buddy for four days will be Toronto Star scribe Mark Richardson. Second prize was eight days with my fellow Brit. Truth is neither of us will spoil an-

between 450 and 600 kilometres, getting us to California by the evening of Saturday, November 9. We’ll pass through Illinois, Missouri,

Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Along the way, we will visit many locations and attractions made famous through

Hollywood and many a TV documentary, not to mention dozens of life-on-the-road books. Personally, I’m looking forward to spotting the

Driving all 3,945 kilometres of the famous Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica has always been on my bucket list. However, I’m hoping that after enduring a week on that often rocky and rough road that it will not be the last of my ever expanding must-do-before-I-die list! On Saturday, November 1, I head to Chicago for a route briefing and meeting with Gary Fleshman, who has driven the route more than 100 times. I am one of 14 journalists from across Canada participating in the drive staged by Nissan Canada to launch the 2015 versions of the Altima sedan and Rogue sport ute. Interestingly, a few people plan to do only half of the journey . . . seems to me that’s like climbing half way up Everest! The daily trek will range

other couple, well at least for four days. I’m currently watching as many episodes of the 1960s’ era Route 66 TV series as I can and digesting every story about music inspired by the highway. Of course, I’m making a compilation tape, I mean picking a playlist for my generic MP3 player. I will be sharing my adventures with Driveway readers during and after the trip. Blogging begins on drivewaybc.ca this coming weekend and a full report will appear in print and online in late November. Off to get my kicks on Route 66. Adios . . . for now.

The suicide rate among Canadians between 15 and 19 was 9 per 100,000 people in 2009, lower than the rate of 11.5 within the general population. But a single suicide is one too many; it is important for all of us to understand this tragedy and to be on the lookout for any warning signals from our loved ones. It is usually a group of factors that push es people to consider suicide, whether they are teenagers or adults. Abuse, violence, or mental health prob lems are all elements that can lead to this kind of desperation. Indeed, 60 percent of people who com mit suicide are suffer ing from depression. The risk increases in the presence of sub stance abuse and pov erty. And then there is the last straw that can make life seem com pletely unbearable, such as a broken heart, rejection, or failure. and healthy role mod els can play an impor tant part in protecting the vulnerable in these difficult situations. Any type of suicidal behaviour must be taken seriously. It is important to dem onstrate at all times that we are concerned about the fate of the person in question and that we’re always avail able if they want to talk, even if it means broaching the subject directly with them. We must also be attentive to warning signals,

such as direct or indi rect verbal messages, behavioural changes, loss of interest, less interaction with oth ers, reduced concentra tion, and other signs of depression. To find out more about this subject, consult the website of the Canadian Association for Sui cide Prevention at www. suicideprevention.ca. In an emergency situation involving either yourself or a loved one, don’t hes itate to use the helplines available in different areas of the country.

Let’s all unite to eradicate bullying According to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, at least one Canadian teenager out of three can tell stories about what it’s like to be a victim of bullying at school. Other Canadian studies show that bullying occurs every seven minutes in the playground and every 25 minutes in the classroom. Do these statistics shock you? Whether you’re a student, parent, or educator, you have a role to play in putting an end to bullying. Types of bullying Bullying is not only about pushing people around or calling them names. There are in fact four principal types of bullying, and being able to identify them is a first step in the fight to eradicate this scourge. • Verbal bullying (Insults, sarcasms, teasing, the spreading of rumours, threats, inappropriate sexual comments, and slurs about culture, race, religion, gender, or sexual-orientation.) • social bullying (Group threats, making a scapegoat of someone, exclusion, public humiliation, and demeaning graffiti.) • physical bullying (Hitting, pushing, pinching, hounding, jostling, stealing or destroying possessions, and sexual touching of an undesirable nature.)

• Cyberbullying (Using the Internet or text messaging to bully, humiliate, make fun of, or circulate rumours about someone.) DeVasTaTing effeCTs Just as there are many forms of bullying, there are also many devastating effects. Victims can experience an inordinate amount of insecurity, distress, withdrawal, isolation, fear, stress, anxiety, loss of self-confidence, and nightmares. Some victims can also feel physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, nausea, fatigue, and panic attacks. Bullying can even lead to academic problems, including dropping out of school. In a few cases — and only one case is too many — the pain caused by bullying can cause the victim to consider committing suicide. No one should have to feel wounded or humiliated or live in fear or isolation. Let’s all unite to eradicate bullying.

A crAsh course

communicating with Teenagers 101

During the teen years, many young people talk a lot less, or hardly at all, to their parents. And when their children text them, parents don’t always understand the message because of all those abbreviations. So how can parents communicate with their

kids and make sense of their language under these circumstances? Here are a few guidelines. First of all, it’s normal that teenagers talk less to their parents at this time in their lives, as one of their fundamental drives throughout these

years is to become independent. In order to do this, they must redefine the bonds they have with their parents. Conversely, parents must respect this distance, as it is conducive to their children’s own identity. For the same reason, parents should refrain

from using childish nicknames and greeting their teenagers with a thousand questions when they come home from school. Humour facilitates communications, while moralizing, sarcasm, and criticism inevitably lead to an abrupt end of the dis-
