13th annual Brown’s Bay Resort Charity Chum Derby a huge success

by Don Daniels 500 tickets were sold at $30 dollars each. Most of those who purchased, were going after the top prize money of $1000 dollars in cash but

many entered for the fun of it. For many it’s a family tradition to socialize and fish for chum at Browns Bay. The weekend started on Friday October 17th and the presentations were made late Sunday

afternoon.

This year a total of 200 chum were weighed in which was down from 665 chum caught last year. The largest chum was 16.4 pounds and was caught

by Byron Spooner who

received a cheque for $1000 dollars. Darcy Livingston came in second with a chum weighing 15.8 pounds and the third place winner in the heavy fish category was Ed Gouten with a 15.4

pound chum.

Entertainment was provided Friday night with John Reynolds and Saturday night the music was provided by Nigel Nikolaisen and Derek Lorentz.

The weather was

wet and cold but that didn’t dampen the spirits for those who came to fish have fun.

Proceeds from the derby benefitted the Greenways Land Trust.

This Styrofoam container was recently dumped on a road near McIvor Lake, even though it can be recycled for free at Island Return It at 1580 Willow St or Campbell River waste management centre , 6700 Argonaut Rd. Oddly enough, this item was dumped 10 km past the Willow St. location, and about 2.5 km away from the waste management centre.

If recycled, Styrofoam is melted, compressed, shipped to handling facilities and turned into new products. If dumped in nature, the Styrofoam breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, eventually feeding and harming unsuspecting wildlife. The material dumped near McIvor Lake breaks down and washes into streams that end up in John Hart Lake. Energy efficient light fixtures contain small amounts of mercury vapour and should be handled and disposed of with care. Virtually all components can be recovered and recycled into new products. Ask our waste reduction educator: What should I do with old pallets?

Old pallets can be recycled into beautiful home and yard furniture or fixtures (check out recycled pallets on Pinterest.com). Instead, these lovely pallets were dumped near Comox Lake. Before considering something “garbage”, try advertising it on Craigslist. You never know who’s looking for exactly what you are planning to discard.

These chimney bricks, dumped near Comox Lake, are in great demand for garden landscaping (garden paths or beds) or even for rebuilding homes – Habitat for Humanity would have taken them.

As for the yard waste, it can take 200 to 400 years to make one centimetre of soil in nature. If you can’t compost your own yard waste, or recycle it through the organics curbside program (in Comox and Cumberland), then take it to CSWM waste management centres where it will become soil within six months. Yes, there is a tipping fee for clean wood and yard waste, to cover the processing cost, but in the end, isn’t soil worth it?
