More than 100 people have signed a petition opposing a proposed transitional homeless village on Valley Road, according to Rob Mrcela, the area resident who gathered the signatures. The petition expresses concerns about property crime and the rural location of the proposal. “There are significant concerns with other such ‘tent villages’ that exist in Abbotsford already,” the petition reads. “Problems include increased crime, open drug use and dealing, violence, garbage and hazardous biowaste from used drug paraphernalia.” Mrcela said 141 people signed the petition within the last month. He dropped it off at city hall on Friday. The petition urges the city to adopt other measures to house its homeless population. “Supportive housing is an evidence-based solution to homelessness, tent villages are not evidence-based,” it states. The petition says the camp would lead to longer emergency response and make it more difficult to homeless residents to access services. Continued on A7

Mayoral candidates differ on water, homelessness decisions at first debate Banman shortens attendance, citing conflict with Diwali celebrations Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
Abbotsford’s two mayoral candidates offered different visions on the city’s past, present and future before a crowd of more than 300 during last Thursday evening’s mayoral debate at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium. Challenger Coun. Henry Braun and incumbent Mayor Bruce Banman answered questions primarily focusing on the environment, arts and culture and homelessness. While the two men were often in agreement about their visions for Abbotsford’s future, some of the biggest differences came when the two were asked to explain their positions on hot-button topics from the city’s recent history. While neither man directly confronted the other, one of the biggest differences in policy came when the two men were asked about the tie vote that rejected a proposal from Abbotsford Community Services to build a 21-bed supportive housing project downtown after the Downtown Business Association expressed opposition to the project. Banman said council would have been breaking its promise to downtown businesses if it had approved rezoning of the land for the project. “I stand by my decision to protect the C-7 zone that was negotiated in good faith with the Downtown Business Association,” he said. Braun disagreed, saying that the city had committed to preserving its Business Improvement Area, but that the C-7 zone was “a whole different animal” under the sole purview of council. He said council should not have rejected the proposal, thereby turning down $15 million in funding promised by the province. “The first thing I will do as your mayor is I will go to Victoria and say ‘I want your money back.’ ” Opposing views also arose when both men were asked to explain their position on the failed 2011 water referendum. Braun said he lost friends

He said he began looking into the data after reading letters to the editor and found that the P3 project was not necessary, especially for its price tag, which was estimated to total $345 million over 25 years. Banman said: “There was not enough data for me to make a well-informed decision on it.” He said it later turned out the plan was based on a faulty premise. That led to the closest the night got to a direct exchange, with Braun rebutting Banman’s statement by declaring: “The data was there.” Both candidates also spoke about the need for the city to attract more jobs, especially for young workers, but differed on how much progress Abbotsford has made. Braun said the city’s scattered development and driverfirst layout made it unattractive to workers in high-tech industries and their employers. Millenials, he said, “don’t like what they see and they don’t like what the babyboomers have done.” Abbotsford needed a more coherent planning process, he said, adding that out-of-town developers also feel “insiders
play with different rules.” Banman, though, said the city was already making it easier for new development, including high-rises. He said the city’s development application review team has cut red tape and allowed developers to get a quick answer on what must be done to gain approval for projects. But he also spoke of a need for more optimism. “We have to stop talking about everything that’s wrong and start talking about what’s right,” he said. “We need to stop complaining about everything that’s happened in the past.” Many queries surrounded the expansion of the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Banman said he was in favour of the twinning of the pipeline. Braun said that while he would wait to hear Kinder Morgan’s responses to the more than 200 questions posed to it by the city, he expects to support it unless “something real bad comes back from the questions we asked.” QQQQ Banman was absent for the first 45 minutes of the event, citing commitments to attend
Diwali celebrations elsewhere. In his absence, Braun answered questions on a range of issues facing Abbotsford. He said Abbotsford “should be much farther ahead than where we are ... and it really comes down to leadership.” He also said the city needs to work better with the provincial and federal governments. While the debate was scheduled to last until 9:30 p.m., Banman left at 9 p.m. He told the News that he was headed to the Blueridge Temple for another Diwali celebration. Earlier, Braun said he had also attended a celebration at the temple. Braun took questions for another half hour, speaking on the need to listen to the public better, and whether he was in a conflict of interest because of his son’s job with the city (see related story, page 14). The mayoral debate was organized by eight local nonprofits: Abbotsford Community Services, the United Way of the Fraser Valley, the Abbotsford Community Foundation, the Abbotsford Arts Council, The Reach, MSA Museum, the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley and the Fraser Valley Conservancy. The evening began with moderator Justin Goodrich delivering a strong warning to the audience. “I have heard a great many rumours about things that may or may not transpire tonight. Let me be clear: I will not allow tonight to become a spectacle. We will conduct ourselves with integrity, we will honour ourselves with respect,” he said. “If at any point, this becomes a political spectacle, I will bring the evening to an abrupt halt.” The warning was heeded, and Goodrich was not forced to act on his words, only breaking in rarely to keep audience questions brief. A column billed as satire and posted on the Abbotsford Ratepayers Association (ARA) website has raised concerns for some council candidates mentioned in the piece, and brought forward an apology from the co-owners of the originating website, one of whom is also seeking election. The article, aimed at council hopeful Lyle Caldwell, was originally posted on Oct. 4 on the Abbotsford Today website – which council candidate Vince Dimanno co-owns. It was soon removed from the site, but remained until yesterday (Tuesday) on the website of the ARA. Dimanno says he is currently president of that organization, which lost its status as a society two years ago according to the B.C. Registry Services, as reported in The News last week. Caldwell’s late wife Christine was a former Abbotsford city councillor and a well-known advocate for the arts who passed away in February of 2013. He said that although he didn’t want to mention names, at that time he “phoned a couple of people and it was taken down.” He said he can accept comments about himself as he put his name forward in the election, but was unhappy that there were comments about his late wife. He was unaware the article remained on the ARA site. He said he received a call on Tuesday from Archer, who apologized.

Man faces charges after Jeep crashes into A&W Witnesses said an SUV was being driven erratically at a high speed just before it crashed into an A&W restaurant Sunday morning. Three people sitting in the restaurant suffered minor injuries when the white Jeep plowed into the A&W’s front entrance The driver of the vehicle was suspected of being intoxicated and arrested at the scene. Around 10 a.m., police were already responding to a report of the vehicle being driven in an unsafe manner westbound on South Fraser Way when another caller reported it had crashed into the A&W. Elaine, who didn’t provide her first name, said she was having breakfast with her brother, who was celebrating his birthday, when the vehicle
entered the restaurant with a crash. “I got smashed in the back of the head with a big chunk of glass, but I was getting out of there as fast as I could,” she said. Emerson Bondar, 31, was scheduled to appear in Abbotsford Provincial Court Monday morning to face four charges: dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, refusing to provide a breath sample, driving while prohibited and failure to comply with a probation order. Earlier this year Bondar pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting a peace officer in connection with a 2013 dangerous driving incident in Mission, according to online court records. For the housing component of the project to move forward, the city would have to amend the official community plan (OCP) to designate a portion of the subject property as a temporary residential use permit area. That would allow the organization to develop up to 40 sleeping cabins; a communal laundry, kitchen and bathroom structure; and a caretaker/ administrative building. The proposal also includes an area for up to five tent sites to be used as short-term emergency shelters. The issue will go to council at an upcoming meeting, but no date has yet been set.

In someone’s backyard
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that city hall is now in possession of a petition opposing the creation of a so-called “dignity village” on Valley Road. Transition housing for homeless people often draws such a response, with wouldbe neighbours fearful of the potential of property crime, drug use and dealing, vagrancy and other issues. Many times, such fears are baseless or overblown. But acknowledging the problems with NIMBYism does not mean some places are not well-suited for homeless housing projects like the village. The petition is right when it states that “an urban problem cannot be fixed with a rural solution.” Residents will know better than most of the inconveniences of living in the area without a vehicle. The distance from the proposed village to any services – not only the Salvation Army but grocery stores, medical clinics,
and social services – makes the plan illconceived. Equally disconcerting are the precedents that would be set by the city in providing sewer and water services for such a purpose on private property, and the human rights challenges that are bound to arise when authorities eventually want to shut it down. Earlier this year, a tied vote led to the city’s rejection of a supportive housing project on Montrose Avenue, after local businesses came out opposed to the project. The city has been searching for a solution to the homelessness issue ever since. The answer is unlikely to be found by housing the homeless in the most out-ofthe-way spot possible. Yet, the homeless do have to live somewhere, whether it is in a camp or in a supportive housing project, or in a unstructured tent city like the one now blighting Gladys Avenue. Wherever they are, they will be living in someone’s backyard.

Other Hand As I write this column, the rain pelts down. Many trees have already lost their leaves, though most in the yard are hanging on grimly to their foliage, waiting it seems to drop them all at once. The subsequent festooning of the lawn – too much to mulch with the mower or pick up with the grass sweeper – will require hours of raking and disposal. As fall quickly passes into what certainly seems like winter, with single digit temperatures in the morning, and skeins of Canada geese honking overhead on their way south during the past couple of weeks, I regret not spending more time in the province’s interior during the splendor of fall. However, even there it was still summery a couple of weeks ago, the trees still green from lack of frost which would have transformed them into brilliant shades of
orange, red and yellow. And now it’s snowing in the high country – the Canyon and the Coquihalla suddenly changed from scenic drives to scary ventures. Time to cocoon and keep fires burning in the hearth. Then a guy from FedEx, wearing shorts and a short-sleeved shirt, shows up at the door with a parcel. Time, I realize, to buck up, accept that down here on the wet coast, as bad as it seems isn’t really that bad at all. Yes, the rain seems incessant but it’s not bonechilling cold, and maybe if the sun comes back for a few days, perhaps one more trip into the backwoods before the lakes ice up is in the offing. Even if I don’t manage to get there, what with all the leaf raking, etc., at least for a while I’ll still be able to breathe a little easier, thanks to the provincial government rejecting Bylaw 280 and sending Metro Vancouver back to the drawing board with its plans for garbage disposal. Bylaw 280 would have required all garbage generated from Howe Sound to Abbotsford’s borders – the essential confines of Metro Vancouver – be kept in the region. The reason for the bylaw is that it would ensure there was sufficient fuel to
fire its huge proposed incinerator, which I’m convinced, despite the proponents protestations to the contrary, would contribute significant pollution to the air we breathe. Greater Vancouver likes to claim it is the “greenest” city complex, and thanks

A bit hypocritical don’t you think, when the motive for Bylaw 280 was to turn as much garbage as possible into an electrical power generation moneytree? I thought being green was respecting the environment, and recycling up to 90 per cent of the waste generated. Not burning
as much trash as possible to make a buck to offset the cost of real green initiatives. It is also interesting that Belkorp has just released a study that suggests Metro’s desired incinerator could cost up to $1.3 billion more to construct, and that Metro’s hoped for $100 per kilowatt hour revenue stream may be over-inflated. For the record, it has to be noted that Belkorp has a vested interest. It operates the Cache Creek landfill where most of Metro’s non-recyclables now end up. Obviously, it also wants to maintain its revenues, as does I’m sure the village of Cache Creek which benefits directly from jobs and possibly municipal taxes. The bottom line is that private companies exist, at least in the U.S., which can recycle at a profit virtually all waste without burning any of it. If the politicians of Metro could look beyond their dreams of revenue generation, and seek out other more environmentally friendly alternatives available in the private sector, perhaps in the Fraser Valley we could all breathe a little easier, for a long time to come. markrushton@abbynews.com

Stop inviting the homeless This past summer I went camping in the Rocky Mountains. While there the conservation officers paid us a visit and told us about the bears in the area and how if we left food out in our campsite bears would be attracted and return again and again.  If a bear became accustomed to eating the food in the campground it would have to be trapped and hauled away so it would not become reliant on it and a danger to campers. When bears did come into the campground, conservation officers shot rubber bullets at them or set off bear-bangers to scare them away. They did not want the bears to be comfortable in this location.  This made a lot of sense to me and I was sure to follow his advice as I definitely did not want to invite bears into our camp. I’m wondering if the same logic should be used with the vagrants living in tents in various places in
Abbotsford. We attract them by providing free food, clothing and everything else they need and then complain that they stay.  We are even talking about providing them housing on Valley Road where they will comfortably be able to do drugs and continue in other illegal activities. Where are we going to draw the line? Help is available for homeless people who want help.  The people we see in these tent cities are vagrants. They choose to live this way, and we make it easy for them. They do not want to go to the Salvation Army shelter because they could not continue to abuse drugs and alcohol. They do not want to live by any rules.  We need to quit enabling them in their present lifestyles and start protecting the rights, property and safety of hard-working, honest people. Some residents in Abbotsford and Mission have noticed discoloured tap water, but water samples taken late Oct. 24 confirmed that the water is safe. A city notice says the water’s current yellow tinge is a result of excess tannins in the water at Norrish Creek. Tannins leach out of decaying organic substances, such as leaves, and dissolve in the water. Filtration cannot remove the dissolved tannin but the water is safe to drink. Water samples have been taken at distribution points throughout Abbotsford and Mission, and test results confirm that the water is safe. City staff perform routine testing to ensure water quality is maintained throughout the year. Results are regularly posted online at www.ourwatermatters.ca/Water-Quality, and residents with concerns about their water service can contact the engineering department at 604-864-5514.

A calendar featuring photos of dogs involved in the St. John Ambulance Dog Therapy Program will raise money for the program and other St. John Ambulance services. Dogs and their handlers involved in the program visit seniors’ homes, hospitals and schools throughout the year to bring warmth and comfort where it is needed most. Three of the dogs featured in the calendar are from Abbotsford. The calendars cost $10 for a small version and $15 for a large one. Pot activist Tim Felger of Abbotsford must go through a new trial, as previously sought by the Crown, following a decision on Oct. 17 by the Supreme Court of Canada. Felger had applied to Canada’s highest court last month in hopes of being able to argue that an earlier decision by the B.C. Court of Appeal should be overturned, but the application was dismissed. In January of this year, the Court of Appeal agreed with the Crown that Felger’s 2012 acquittal on drug charges should be set aside and a new trial should be held. Police focus on pedestrian safety

ICBC says crashes up 76 per cent in fall/winter The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is handing out free pedestrian reflectors to local residents in conjunction with a new ICBC education campaign. ICBC has launched the pedestrian safety campaign because the number of crashes involving pedestrians increases significantly during the fall and winter, according to a press release. ICBC says that, on average, 76 per cent more pedestrians are injured in crashes from November to January every year – when conditions are dark and weather is poor – compared to June to August. The agency says the top contributing factors for drivers in crashes involving pedestrians are: distraction, failure to yield the right of way, and weather. In B.C., on average, 58 pedestrians are killed and 2,400 are injured in crashes every year, according to ICBC. Those numbers for the Lower Mainland are 33
and 1,700. So far this year in Abbotsford, there have been 39 pedestrianrelated collisions and one fatality. The most recent crash occurred on Tuesday morning, when an 18-year-old Abbotsford boy struck by a car while using a crosswalk in the area of Old Yale and Maclure roads. The teen was airlifted to hospital, where he remains in critical condition. ICBC says the majority of pedestrian-related crashes happen at intersections. As part of the campaign, ICBC suggests that pedestrians make themselves more visible to drivers by wearing reflective clothing or gear. The agency is making pedestrian safety reflectors available throughout the province. In Abbotsford, the reflectors are available at the APD’s main building at 2838 Justice Way and the community police office at 34194 Marshall Rd.
Mobile flu shot clinics decrease
Fraser Health is conducting fewer mobile flu vaccination clinics in the community than it did a few years ago. Spokesperson Tasleem Juma said the gradual decrease over the past three years has been in response to less demand for the Fraser-run clinics at places like libraries and community centres. Virtually all pharmacies and many doctor’s offices now offer flu shots, she said, and there’s been a steady increase each year in people, particularly seniors, getting their vaccinations at those locations, often when they pick up prescriptions. Juma said some Fraser Health-run mobile clinics are still offered but they are increasingly geared to people who are less likely to use the other options. Juma said Fraser Health is trying to encourage more pregnant women to get the flu shot this year, adding concerns about the vaccine’s safety are misplaced.

The provincial government has rejected Metro Vancouver’s controversial Bylaw 280, which sought to ban the growing flow of garbage shipments out of the region. Environment Minister Mary Polak cited concerns that the bylaw, passed by the Metro board a year ago, would create a monopoly on waste management, destabilize the private hauling industry and possibly increase illegal dumping. University Women MT. LEHMAN group meets monthly LIQUOR The Abbotsford chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) holds its next monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 3. The group meets the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m., usually at the University House at University of the Fraser Valley, but the next meeting is at Gladwin United Church. The program is titled “Singing Their Way to Freedom” and presented by Carolyn Abramson and a choir of 12 male singers. The Abbotsford CFUW chapter was founded in 1953 and offers a forum for educated women of all ages to meet for fellowship, networking and involvement in the community. The local chapter offers several interest groups, including bridge, theatre, book clubs, lunch groups and outdoor activities such as golf, cycling and walking. The chapter gives an annual bursary to a mature female student returning to university or continuing her education. The national CFUW, founded in 1919, has 10,000 members in 122 clubs. It is a volunteer, non-profit organization affiliated with the International Federation of University Women, which has special consultative status at the United Nations. It provides leadership and support to women around the world through advocacy, awards and bursaries. Anyone wanting to attend the local chapter as a guest should email margopayne@outlook. com. Local business supports charities Once Upon a Child donates clothing, other items to families A local business has partnered with the Ministry of Children and Family Development to create a discount program for 275 local foster families working on a tight household budget, and is participating in other charitable endeavours. Once Upon a Child Abbotsford, which buys and sells gently used kids’ items, donates clothing, toys and equipment on a weekly basis to Abbotsford Bibles for Missions Society and MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) Abbotsford.
It also donates items to Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley and is in the process of creating a program to offer assistance to women and children who have experienced violent situations. Once Upon a Child also participates in Abbotsford Works, a program where individuals with disabilities can obtain training and work experience. The business also sponsored and funded a radio campaign fundraiser on behalf
of the Meadow Rose Society of Chilliwack and Abbotsford. The organization works to support children in poverty under the age of three. Once Upon a Child was opened in Abbotsford a year ago by Kevin and Sara Allan. “From the beginning, it has been important for us to establish relationships throughout the local community to support government programs and independent charities,” Kevin said.

The 30th annual Ducks Unlimited fundraising banquet and auction takes place in Abbotsford on Saturday, Nov. 1. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre, 36035 North Parallel Rd. Dinner starts at 7 p.m., with live and silent auctions and raffles to follow. Komagata Maru play this weekend The Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) premieres a play on Saturday, Nov. 1 based around the Komagata Maru incident. “That Land Beyond the Waves,” commissioned by UFV and written by Rajnish Dhawan, examines the Komagata Maru incident from the perspective of both an Indian immigrant whose sister is on the ship and the European-Canadians he works for in the town of Abbotsford. One hundred years ago, a ship named the Komagata Maru dropped anchor in Vancouver with 376 passengers on board. The majority of these passengers were Sikh men and British subjects intending to immigrate to Canada. Brennan Sinclair at Coffee House Series
Brennan Sinclair is the next performer in the Envision Financial Coffee House Concert Series. Sinclair performs on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Wired Monk McCallum (1975 McCallum Rd.). Over the last decade, music has become an increasingly important
part of Sinclair’s life. Since picking up the guitar in 2002, he has played at various events across the Fraser Valley. In his last years of high school, he started writing songs and performing at coffee shops. It was also in these years that he began
playing for larger audiences at Abbotsford Idol in 2007 and the PNE Talent Search Competition shortly after. This continued on a casual basis until meeting a friendly drummer in one of his classes at University of the Fraser Valley and starting up the band
GoodThief. Sinclair played guitar and sang lead vocals with GoodThief for two years and wrote several songs for the band during that time. As schedules got hectic and schoolwork got heavier, the band stopped playing in 2009 and music took a backseat.
Since then, Sinclair has continued to write and perform whenever the opportunity has arisen. Now that he has completed his degree, he is excited for the
next chapter and looks forward to sharing life’s struggles, joys, questions and challenges with an audience again. For more information about the con-

In the end, students realized that determining when to pull the goaltender and when to substitute players are but statistical games. “A Taste of Pi” is a mathematics enrichment program offered by the SFU department of mathematics, the faculty of science, and the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences. The program challenges students to excel and transforms them into critical thinkers and problem solvers. Dr. Christine Tsou, math competition team co-ordinator at SJB, has nominated her students to take part the “A Taste of Pi” program since 2003.

in July. The team won the overall title for the most medals, as well as the John Fletcher Spirit Award for teamwork, fair play, and integrity. Team BC is the first squad in the history of the games to win both awards, and one of only two to ever beat Team Saskatchewan in a NAIG medal count. Almost 5,000 athletes competed in the NAIG, representing 13 provinces and territories in Canada and 13 regions in the U.S. Five athletes from Abbotsford were part of Team B.C., including three basketball players. Corey Hauck won gold with the U19 men’s basketball team. Jacob Firlotte put together a three-medal performance in U19 track
and field, winning gold in the 100 metre and 200 metre events and a bronze in the 4x400 relay. Joshua Dubois also competed in track and field at the U16 level, and Jaylene Soegard and Denelle Hauck both played on the U19 women’s basketball team. Lara Mussell Savage, a member of the council as well as one of Team BC’s general managers, helped form sportspecific committees for each of the 13 sports Team BC competed in, and oversaw the selection process through each committee. Winning the John Fletcher Award as well as the medal count was icing on the cake for a team that set out to continue a tradition of sportsmanship begun
at the annual National Aboriginal Hockey Championships. “We let [the athletes] know that Team BC has a reputation of being a classy team,” said Mussell Savage, “and we wanted to continue that trend and just to remember at all times to portray and display those acts of sportsmanship and spirit and integrity.” Athletes and coaches from the Fraser Region were honoured Sunday in a special ritual. After being led through the longhouse by traditional drummers and singers, the Team BC members were placed on strewn cedar boughs (a sacred wood), and welcomed individually by a receiving line of community members.

The UFV Cascades women’s soccer team defied history and conditions on Saturday by walking onto the Victoria Vikes’ soggy home turf and trouncing their hosts 3-0 in a sudden-death playoff match. The Cascades (7-2-3) were the underdogs when matched up against the nationally fifth-ranked Vikes (8-13) in Saturday’s Canada West quarter-final, although the two teams had tied 1-1 in both their meetings this season. Having lost every quarter-final they’ve played in since their 2010 trip to CIS Nationals, the Cascades didn’t look to have destiny on their side. To make things even more forbidding, UFV lost a similar game to the Vikes two years ago on the exact same field. “I think it comes down to the players,” said Cascades coach Rob Giesbrecht. “The

Mouat Junior Varsity sink Panthers
The W.J. Mouat Junior Hawks football team scored another big win this past week against their rivals from Surrey, the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers, by a convincing 34-7 margin. The Panthers opened the scoring on the first drive of the game, but then the Hawks defence settled down, limiting the Panthers’ playmakers and forcing them to turn the ball over on numerous occasions.
Leading 12-7 at the half, the Hawks played a determined third quarter that would decide the game. Nelson Lokombo, Alex Howman, Anthony Malatinka and Austin Lal all put in strong performances. Next up for the Junior Hawks is their final regular season game against the Abby Senior Panthers. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Mouat Field on Thursday (tomorrow).

Fledgling Falcons win again The Abbotsford Atom Falcons (ages 7-9) defended an early lead on Saturday to defeat off the North Langley Bears 16-8 in community football action. The Falcons are currently 7-1-1 on the season, and haven’t lost a game since a 14-7 defeat by the Maple Ridge Gold two months ago. The weather may have been nasty and cold, but the Falcons didn’t take long to heat up. Running back Taejshon Catlin had two touchdown runs for the Falcons in the first half, and Logan Thiessen put up two successful kicks for the extra four points (kicks are worth two points, and conversions one at the Atom level). “They’re working hard together as a group,” said coach Brent Buchanan. “They’re working for each other.” Buchanan pointed

The Robert Bateman Timberwolves were hoping for an upset Friday against the Abby Senior Panthers (an honourable mention in last week’s provincial AA rankings), especially after exiting the first half with a 22-10 lead. Ken passed away peacefully at Tabor Home in Abbotsford with his wife by his side. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Arlene of 45 years, his brother John Gammell, brother-in-law Richard Novis, nephews Oliver and Finbar Gammell and Tom Novis, niece Rebecca Allen, great nephew Keagan Novis and great nieces Charlee May Allen and Macy Novis. Ken immigrated to Canada from England in 1966. He was only here a week before he met Arlene in Kitsilano and they were married two years later on October 19. Ken was known for his great sense of humour and he loved to make people laugh even at his own expense. A sense of humour that he carried with him through the years as his dementia progressed. He was a kind, gentle man with a zest for life that had him pursuing many interests and adventures. He prescribed to the philosophy that “the one who dies with the most toys wins”. He built three houses, took courses on how to build log houses and geodesic domes, fished, skied, wind surfed, sailed on a racing yacht, built a camper, created abstract art, made a leather barrel chair, did some modeling, traveled to many countries and the list goes on. He was operations manager at Woodgrove Shopping Center in Nanaimo for the last eighteen years of his working life. When he retired he and Arlene golfed and travelled to Yuma, AZ in the winter for fun in the sun. Summers were spent in Black Creek on Vancouver Island. He moved to Abbotsford in 2011 to be closer to family. Many thanks to the staff at Maplewood House Day program for the love and joy they brought to his life the last few years. An open house and celebration of Ken’s life will be held at a later date.

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the sudden and tragic passing of our beloved Navdeep (Nav) Singh Gill on Oct. 18, 2014 near Banff, Alberta, at the age of 30. Nav was our beloved son, brother, husband, grandson, nephew and cousin. He leaves behind his wife Jatinder and young son Khushbir. He will always be missed and remembered by his parents Jasbir Singh and Inderjit Kaur; brother Peter (Sukhdeep) and niece Perika; fraternal twin sister Karen (Harvinder); grandparents Maghar Singh (late) and Basant Kaur Gill; grandparents Mohinder Singh and Surjit Kaur Brar; and many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. Nav was a loving and caring member of a large family and the impact of his loss will be felt by many. As he joins our loved ones who have gone before him, we wish that he may rest in peace. A funeral service was held on Sunday Oct. 26 at Calgary Crematorium and Funeral Services in Queens Park Cemetery.

Murray McDonald, a long-time resident of Abbotsford, passed away peacefully at the Kipnes Center for Veterans, Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 90. He was predeceased by his wife Gladys Joy and will be greatly missed by his three daughters Heather Zomar, Patricia Young and Linda Roberts, son-in-law Ken Pritchard, 6 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. A family gathering to remember Murray will be held in Edmonton, Alberta. Eric Isaac, longtime Abbotsford resident and Legion member, passed away at age 89, in his sleep, at Maplewood House. A special thanks to Dr Pauls and the staff for the care and comfort they provided Eric during his stay. He leaves to mourn, Grace (Heppner) Isaac, his loving wife of 68.5 years, daughters Laura Munn, Kathleen (Thomas) Schoen, granddaughter Sophia Schoen, sister Alice Hale and numerous other cherished family members. Reunited with deceased son Douglas and siblings Peter, Frieda and Nettie.
Born in Feodorfka, Russia, Eric emigrated with his parents as a toddler to a farm in Lucky Lake SK. Joined the RCAF in 1943. Before retiring at the rank of Major, CO of Nanaimo Military Camp, Eric had been
stationed from the Yukon across
Canada to Montreal, as well as serving in Metz France and Lahr Germany during the cold war. After the military Eric joined the civil service with DOC and Corrections Canada. His many passions included golfing at Ledgeview, astronomy,
communications from Morse Code to wireless, tinkering with gadgets and listening to the Divine Liturgy. A celebration of life will be held Monday Nov 10, 11am, at Cascade Community Church, 35190 Delair Rd, Abbotsford. Light refreshments to follow. Kobabe, Alma
June 16, 1914 - October 25, 2014
On October 25, 2014, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord at Glenwood Care Centre in Agassiz, BC. Alma was predeceased by her loving husband, Heinrich, her great-grandson Isaac, and by her two younger sisters, Gisela and Ilse in Germany. She is loved and survived by her three daughters – Hanne (Fritz) Seidel of Cochrane, AB, Trudy (Klaus) Werner of Harrison Hot Springs, BC, and Barb Kobabe of Vancouver, BC. Alma was much loved and cherished by her 10 grandchildren and by her 19 great-grandchildren who all lovingly called her “Oma”. Alma will also be missed by her extended family and many friends in Germany. Alma was a voracious reader, loved German crossword puzzles, Sudoku and classical music. At Logan Manor and
Glenwood Care Centre in Agassiz, she developed a love for Bingo and won more than her share of games. Alma smiled easily and often, had a grand sense of humour and enjoyed life. She considered the staff at Logan Manor and Glenwood Care Centre her second family and was loved and respected by care staff at both sites. Alma loved and appreciated her care staff and prayed for each of them by name on a daily basis. On June 16, 2014, Alma celebrated her 100th birthday and was delighted with all those who shared in her celebration of 100 years well lived. A Celebration of Alma Kobabe’s life will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 1:30 pm at Christ Lutheran Church, 9460 Charles Street in Chilliwack, BC. A reception and time of sharing stories will follow after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alma Kobabe’s memory may be made to the Christ Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or to Lutheran World Relief.
