10 Neat Things by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet
Bug Control
1. Beware of Hitchhikers. Late in the fall, there are typically a few unwanted guests, looking to crash our warm and cozy homes. Most are accidental home invaders. They arrive unintentionally, often with our help. Insects can wander in through openings, ride on our shoulders, on the back of the family pet or hide in items we bring in from outside. 2. Check it Twice. Inspect everything you bring in from outside. Shake out the laundry from the clothesline, check lawn furniture, cushions and other items from the deck that you are storing inside. You should also carefully look over any plants coming in and pay close attention to the soil they are planted in as well. 3. Woody Wisdom. Firewood is another culprit as it may not only have insects but may be harbouring their eggs as well. Check the logs or knock them together before bringing them in and burn them right away. Storing firewood away from buildings and trees as well as off the ground can also cut down on insect infestations. 4. Seal is the Deal. If air and light can pass through a crack, bugs can get in. To stop them in their tracks, install tight-fitting thresholds and door sweeps to the bottoms of exterior doors. Grab a tube of caulk and seal any cracks in your home’s foundation, exterior walls and fascia boards. Don’t forget about tiny gaps around dryer vents or utility lines coming in your house. 5. Attic Critters. Some larger holes in your home, such as chimneys or roof vents into your attic may be harder to cover. Installing metal wire mesh or specially made caps can help stop raccoons, squirrels, mice, birds and other pests from making themselves at home in your crawl spaces and attics. Not only are these critters a nuisance, they may carry mites, fleas, or other insects that can migrate into your home. 6. Hire Hitmen. You can look to the insects' natural predators for help. A large number of birds and bats have small insects as their main source of food. To encourage them to help with your pest control efforts, provide them with places to build their nests and a source of fresh water. You might also want to supplement their insect-based diet with top-quality bird seed. 7. Order in the Yard. Cleaning up your yard can help keep insects away from your home. Mulch, leaves and plant debris can all harbor bugs, so keep them away from your foundation and clean up as much as possible. Branches from trees and shrubs can come in contact with your home and become highways for insects. Keep them pruned so they don't rest on your roof or hang close to windows and doors. 8. A Trail into Your House. Keeping order inside your home can help with keeping bugs in check. Especially ants will stick around if there is something for them to eat. Keep your trash cans clean and take garbage and compost out as soon as you can. Wash dishes right after use or put them into the dishwasher. And don’t forget pet food which can be a tempting treat as well. Put uneaten kibble away after mealtime and consider investing in a bug-proof container. 9. Eight Legs, One Nuisance. One pest that has been appearing with more frequency in our homes is the hobo spider. Also known as the aggressive house spider, hobo spiders are brown and measure roughly ½- ¾ inch in length. Their legs show no distinct rings and have short hairs. Several chevron-shaped markings can be seen on their abdomens. Male hobo spiders also have what looks like two boxing gloves. The bite of the hobo spider can be quite irritating. 10. Get out the Cheese. Droppings, gnawed furniture, tracks and eventually sightings will alert you that mice are settling down in your home. Mouse droppings may contain harmful bacteria and viruses and you should wear protective gloves and a mask when cleaning them up. Mouse-proofing your home, baiting and trapping are the best ways of fighting an infestation. There are various types of traps available, talk to your garden centre expert about the one that’s right for you.

Revised LNG tax reflects softer market By Tom Fletcher Liquefied natural gas producers are being asked to pay a new tax of 3.5 per cent on their
profits for the first 20 years of operation in B.C., after deducting their startup costs. Finance Minister Mike de Jong unveiled
the LNG tax system Tuesday, describing it as lower in total taxes and royalties than existing and proposed LNG export facilities in Australia, Alaska, Oregon and other U.S. states that are B.C.’s main competitors. De Jong said B.C.

scaled back its plan to charge up to seven per cent in the face of declining gas market conditions, including slower growth in China and its new long-term deal to buy pipeline gas from Russia. Japan is also considering restarting its nuclear power program after the 2011 Fukushima earthquake, and oil prices have declined in recent months. Under the B.C. plan, a single medium-sized LNG plant on the B.C. coast would pay about $800 million a year in total provincial taxes after a three-year construction period. That includes the new LNG tax, royalties on gas produced in B.C., carbon tax, provincial sales tax and corporate income tax. There are currently 18 proposals for LNG plants in B.C., ranging from small to those twice the size of the finance

ministry’s medium-plant example. One of the largest is LNG Canada, a consortium of Shell, PetroChina, Mitsubishi and Korea Gas to build a pipeline and export terminal at Kitimat. LNG Canada issued a statement Tuesday saying it will continue to work on its B.C. plan. “There is much more work to do prior to a final investment decision for LNG Canada and we will continue working with First Nations and local communities, as well as municipal, provincial and federal governments,” it said. De Jong said the B.C. Liberal election promise to pay off the province’s debt with LNG revenues remains possible, but it will take longer than earlier estimates. A single medium-sized is worth $8 billion in revenues over a 10-year period of full operation. NDP natural gas critic Bruce Ralston said the government had to slash its tax plan after it hyped the LNG revenue windfall to voters in the 2013 election campaign. That put B.C. in a weaker negotiating position with international investors, Ralston said. The new tax takes effect in 2017, with an effective rate of 1.5 per cent for three years as companies construct LNG plants. Only one or two small facilities are expected to be ready by then. The rate rises to 3.5 per cent on net income after capital costs are deducted, and to five per cent effective 2037. 10 ft

Diana Scott running for city council
Diana Scott. by Diana Scott Diana J. Scott is running for her 3rd term as councillor for the City of Cranbrook. Of all the candidates running, she is the only one with more than one term under her belt in Cranbrook. “I think it is important to have that experience, that history. Sometimes new councils question the reasoning behind the decisions past councils have made. I can help with that, especially as some of our key long-time staff either have retired or will be retiring soon. When I was a new councillor, I found the experience and wisdom of the veteran councillors invaluable”. Looking back at her election platforms from 2008 and 2011, they both focused on economic growth and the importance of being business friendly. “I have advocated on behalf of business the entire time I have been in office. I fought hard for businesses when the sign bylaw was under discussion. I understand the importance of signage to a business. I fought hard to

convince council not to approve high DCCs (development cost charges) knowing businesses cannot handle a bunch of cost increases at once, especially the way the economy was the past few years. I also asked for further stakeholder discussions with regard to the building bylaw. There’s no sense putting so much time and effort into the sign and building bylaws if everyone is not going to be happy at the end of the day”. Having a vibrant economy is the most important thing the City can pursue. Everything else follows. If we are business friendly, more businesses pop up. More people invest in our community. They pay taxes. We have more to spend on roads, infrastructure, police, and fire. We have more to spend on the nice things we want like parks, supporting the arts, and recreation. If we don’t become more business friendly, we aren’t going to spread the tax burden around. More people aren’t going to move here. Some are going to leave. And we’re not going to have enough

for the things we really need to do. Having said that, Scott is not a one issue person. She believes in the four pillars of the Cranbrook Connected committee: economic, social, cultural, and environmental sustainability. The City has made progress on all those fronts. “We need to pursue all those goals in order to make Cranbrook a great place to live and to attract families and businesses”. However, she does believe council needs to stay focused on council issues and not try to be everything to everyone and tackle issues outside our realm. “That’s why the relationship with community organisations is so important. Working with groups to attain goals that are relevant and important to the City but not our function per se is the way to go with many issues like health care and homelessness”. Scott came to Cranbrook in 2000 to work as a news anchor / reporter at The Drive / B104 radio station. She worked her way up to News Director. She then took a job as Community Relations Director for the Mining Association of BC. Currently, Scott is an independent contractor running 2 businesses: as a medical transcriptionist and voice actor. She also works at the hospital. “I retrained when the economy went in the tank in 2009. It was either make yourself a niche job or move. I love the community and decided to do what it took to stay. I’m glad I did. I love Cranbrook and I love being on council. I have 6 years under my belt as councillor for the City of Cranbrook and I am looking to make it 10 with your support. I ask for your vote November 15th”.

John York running for Cranbrook mayor

John York. by John York 1) Election Security Was Slack – I’ve been writing letters to all levels of government or three years, trying to improve ballot counting
security. Our last two Electoral Officers are now gone. And security has been tightened in most areas. But sadly, what goes on behind closed doors, could be improved.
2) RecPlex Is Sacred – Three years ago I was the only mayoral candidate who dared challenge this money pit. I’ve figured out that Every “DAY” City Hall is burning $ 9,431 of your tax dollars, to keep the RecPlex afloat. 3) Field Charges Were Automatic – I also stopped Leisureservices knee jerk response of demanding that anybody wanting to use a field for a casual game (such as soccer). Had to book a field, and pay a fee. Now you can use any unoccupied field or school yard for a pick up game, without fear of penalty. 4) Transparency – I found out that city hall has no policy to disclose how the mayor or counselors voted, nor must they list, what they accomplished while in office. Without accountability, how do we know who to re-
elect and who to boot out of office. 5) Fluoride Is A Poison – I was the only mayoral candidate to demand we remove fluoride from our drinking supply. I spent two years writing letters describing how deadly fluoride is. And now we can vote to remove it. To learn more about my battles, plus: • How voters are manipulated. • Why Credit is a dirty word.• Why we must all vote. • Who to vote for when you don’t like any of the choices, be it municipal, provincial or federal • How to know who to kick out, etc. Get ready for the Secret Shocking Details, by visiting my webspace on October 31. http://york.shawwebspace.ca

Operation Christmas Child now underway Submitted
The Cranbrook and Kimberley Operation Christmas Child campaign is now underway, with a shorter time period. Local media spokesperson ,Gary Cavers, indicated the slow start-up and shortened campaign period, is due to the initial lack of local volunteers stepping forward to take charge of the campaign this year, after most of the former group retired because of job, health and personal commitments. New volunteers have offered to help-out for the time being, so the campaign can begin locally. The Alliance Church in Cranbrook will be the Church Sponsor and act as the Christmas Child Shoebox Distributing and Co-ordinating centre. Several businesses said they would act as pick-up and drop-off locations. Unfortunately, the Elk Valley will not be fully covered this year because of the lack of finding a group of volunteers to spearhead the campaign and organize distribution and pick-ups. Operation Christmas Child, under the direction of Samaritans Purse is the largest Children’s Christmas Project in the world. Since its beginning in 1993, Operation Christmas Child globally, has collected and distributed over one hundred million gift filled Shoeboxes for needy children in various poor countries around the world. Get started now and fill your Shoebox with small gifts for kids in need. You have only a few weeks to do it. The Campaign Collection Week is NOVEMBER 17TH to 23RD. You’re reminded to enclose a $7.00 shipping donation in your box to cover the cost of getting your gift box delivered to a needy Child. Make cheques and money orders etc. to Samaritans Purse. You can pick-up and drop-off your Shoeboxes at the following locations: Cranbrook: M c D o n a l d s

Christ the Servant
Hugs: I want to send a very big hug, a million times over, to the person(s) who found my flip & flop pouch wallet in the Cranbrook Safeway and turned it in to the bakery department. I am so grateful for the honest people in the world!! Very much appreciated!! Slugs: To the plumbing & heating tradesman from the East Kootenay area that unplugged a seniors deep-freeze and caused her to lose the entire contents and won’t stand good on his word. He has been telling her everyday for 3 weeks that he will reimburse her a measly $100 “tomorrow.” He makes more in 1 hour than her entire weeks food budget and should be giving her at least 5 times that amount. Hugs: To the new Optical shop in the Superstore and their manager Sam. What a great experience. Very carefully listened to my needs and fulfilled them. One of the few Optical shops who don t want money up front for me to spend money. Nice to have a new shop after Sandy closed at New Beginnings. Thanks Sam ! Hugs: To all the City Garbage guys who do such a great job! By the way, you should do a calendar! Slugs: Going into another winter season and we again don’t have a permanent homeless shelter. There seems to be lots of money to advertise that the government is doing what they are suppose to, like all the highway
improvement signs. How about we take that money and house those with mental illness? That is who our government has left on the street. Hugs: To the 2 couples that stopped on the side of the highway near Taghum on October 15th after I hit an Elk. I’ve never been in an accident before so was pretty shaken up and I appreciate your help in making sure I was okay. Thanks again! Hugs: A huge hug to the Kimberley Ski Hill and all the workers for the awesome Halloween party. The job done decorating with the Rossi decorations was great!! Hugs: A huge hug to the honest person who found my purse, which I had left in the shopping cart at the Overwaitea Store in Kimberley. This honest person turned it into the office. Thanks also to the store manager Rob who made certain he notified me to pick up my purse. Hugs: A Big Thank You hug to the lady and her son that helped identify the vehicle in the hit and run that damaged my daughter’s car. Thank You! Hugs: To the Rocky Mountain ATV Club for their donation of $500.00 to the local Search and Rescue organization. This new quad club is very active in the area, environmentally responsible and provides a fun social experience. This was a very generous donation to an important segment of our community.
Send a hug to someone you love If you have a Hug or a Slug...we’d like to hear it. Simply email us at shannon@kootenayadvertiser.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is you keep it tasteful. Hugs and Slugs will be printed as space allows, if we miss yours check back next week and you will be bumped to the start of the list. You can also drop by a written submission to our office at 1510 2nd Street N. or call Shannon at (250)489-3455 or 1-800-665-2382

OBITUARY Shirley (Gaske) Maurer October 5, 1931 – October 17, 2014 It is with great sadness that the Maurer family announces the passing of Shirley Maurer. Shirley slipped away peacefully on October 17th at the age of 83 years. Shirley was born on October 5th, 1931 in Vancouver, B.C. to Robert and Amalia Gaske. She had two brothers and one sister. After the passing of her mother, Shirley moved to the Windermere Valley with her father in 1949. Shirley met the love of her life and married Fritz Maurer on Nov. 3, 1951. Shirley was a devote wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 62 years Fritz, her four daughters Christy Brown (Bill), Sonia Blackwell (Rick), Susan Halverson (Richard), and Kathy Weismiller. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Shirley enjoyed her life on the Big Horn Ranch, gardening, reading, and spending time with her family. HAPPY 50th to the most wonderful, beautiful, special lady
Happy Birthday Wendy here’s to 50 more years..!! Cheers!
Sadly, the von Wittgenstein family announces the passing of Kurt. Kurt has been a resident of the East Kootenays, making positive impacts here since the early 1970s. Kurt worked as a foreman during the initial construction of many of our local Provincial parks including: Moyie Lake, Premier Lake, Whiteswan Lake, Wasa Lake, Peckams/Norbury Lake and Surveyors Lake/Kikomun Creek. Kurt’s love of the outdoors led him next to a position as a fish culturist at the Bull River Trout Hatchery where he helped collect eggs, raise fish and re-stalk many lakes throughout the Province. The surviving family includes children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who are proud to understand that for years to come, many folks will continue to enjoy an outdoor experience in BC, which Kurt has helped to enhance. Kurt completed his working history within the mining industry and also developed into an artisan with his own local business. Kurt loved his family above all else and would always do anything for them. His love of the outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping was in his bones and will live on through us and all those we touch. Kurt leaves behind a loving family who are thankful to have had him in their lives and who will never be able to resist picking up cool rocks. There will only be a private service for Kurt and the family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers. Kurt’s family are thankful to all those who have provided care and support these past few years. Please make donations in the form of unprovoked acts of kindness to all folks you come across in life.

brochure boldly states: End Polio Now. Make
History Today. The campaign aimed at the
eradication of polio is focused on the last three countries on the planet that still have polio cases: Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. The funding of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is being undertaken through a partnership that includes Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. One of the brochure’s headlines titled The Promise states: From 2013 to 2018, every US$1 Rotary commits to the World Health Organization and UNICEF in direct support for polio immunization will be matched 2 to 1 (up to US$35 million per year) by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Over the
years, the Foundation has contributed hundreds of millions to the effort. The Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club has contributed about $25,000 to the cause so far, resulting in its contribution being translated into $75,000. Regarding the far reaching effects of the End Polio campaign, a recent news report aired on CBC states that Nigeria was able to be declared Ebolafree in part due to the infrastructure they had in place to handle Polio vaccinations. Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club member, Frank Vandenbroek spearheaded a group fund raiser in 2012, whereby six Rotary members rode bicycles to the Tri Cities in
Washington and raised $8000 for the quest to end Polio. In the fall of 2012, the Rotary district that includes Cranbrook organized a friendship exchange program that involved travelling to Pakistan and immunizing children. Frank was directly involved in administering the vaccine to children. A felt pen or sharpie was used to colour a child’s finger so that the child could be identified later as having had the vaccine. “We went to two different schools and then later we went to a more public forum to administer the drops to children, says Vandenbroek. “People were grateful we were there to immusee Rotary page B2

were vaccinated,” says Vandenbroek. All people in Pakistan were not open to the idea of immunization, he further says. Up until last year there were only 39 cases of polio documented in Pakistan and now there are 206. Vandenbroek attributes
the increase to the presence of the Taliban, who refuse to endorse polio vaccinations, claiming the procedure sterilizes children. This opposition hinders the goal to end Polio in Pakistan, one of the remaining three countries where
polio cases are found. The Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club will be featuring a donation table at Western Financial Place on October 28, 2014 prior to the Prince Albert vs Kootenay Ice hockey game. Rotary mem-

bers will be staffing the event beginning at 5:30 p.m. and invite the public to take a moment and drop by the table to make a donation or just to find out more information on the quest to rid the last three countries of polio.
Also, a bona fide Iron Lung owned by Frank Vandenbroek will be on display by the donation table. Wikapedia’s definition of an Iron Lung is: An airtight metal tank that encloses all of the body except the head and enforces the lungs
to inhale and exhale through. (required for polio patients). So, stop on by the Western Financial place on October 28th and take the time to hear more about the endeavour to eradicate Polio.

Les Clifford, a Kimberley man who recently passed away, has left behind his wife Julia and three young children. The family is facing financial hardship and members of the community have set up the Les Clifford Memorial Fund.
The fund is at the Royal Bank in Kimberley and there is no tax deduction for a contribution, just the feeling of doing something for members of the community.

“cute-ute” vehicles from Japan, along with the Honda CR-V. We had never seen anything like these vehicles before but they went on to forever change the marketplace and the way a family gets around. Today the compact SUV market has become so popular it will soon exceed the compact car in terms of overall sales, which has been, for decades, the cornerstone of the Canadian marketplace. The Toyota RAV4 continues to be a sales market leader and for good reason. Many buyers put their money into what I call “The Bank of Toyota” and know they will get a good return in terms of reliability, practicality and resale value. Looks
In terms of design, Toyota wanted to make this latest RAV4 more of an emotional purchase and not just a rational choice. The design has been sharpened with more flow from the front bumper and headlamps into a swept windshield and added character lines. Gone is the old swing-out tailgate, replaced by a proper lift gate, which is now framed with protruding tail lamps that look unique but also help with aerodynamics. One area that could use an update are the cheap looking hubcaps. These come standard on the $24,005 base front wheel drive (FWD) LE trim level and $26,270 AWD model. To get proper looking alloy wheels the buyer needs to spend $28,340 for the XLE FWD or $30,540 for the XLE AWD. In the mid-sized sedan market many cars, like the Honda Accord, costing the same amount as the base RAV4 come with nice looking alloy wheels as standard equipment.

The interior is a study in how to maximize space for a family but some of the small details could use refinement. The dash face is now covered with soft materials and looks much better thanks to the French stitching but this same panel also obscures the switches hidden below. The seat-heating buttons, the Eco and Sport settings for the transmission are all switches the driver access frequently but they are not as easy to see, as they should be. Other than the dash there is still a large percentage of the interior covered in hard plastic. The up side is a well laid out interior configuration. The doors open to a wide angle and expose a big back seat with a flat floor, for easy access. The front seats are comfortable and now the driver’s seat has a manual height adjustment. Toyota is often criticized for not being bold enough in some of the choices it makes. Honda now has up-to-date technology in the new CR-V but Toyota is sticking with what works. This approach might be viewed as a step behind but other might look at it as tried-and-true technology that is reliable and still delivers solid fuel ratings. Toyota RAV4 was a pioneer in the small SUV space and continues to be a market leader but now the market is so crowded with entries I suspect it will need to get new engine technology when it is totally refreshed in a few years. My time with the RAV4 LE confirmed that Toyota knows how to make a thoroughly practical and easy to use vehicle that pleases all passengers. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

a 6-speed automatic. Launching from a traffic light is brisk and the noise inside the cabin is fairly low. The steering is easy to maneuver but some might find the feedback to be too vague. Adjustable engine and transmission settings help the RAV4 to either use less fuel or perform better. The Eco button changes the settings of the car to improve fuel economy plus there is a small Eco light that reminds the driver when the car is being driven most efficiently. The Sport buttons holds the transmission a little longer between shifts for more responsiveness. Fuel economy is rated at 10.5L/100km in the city and 8.2L on the highway, using the new more stringent 2015 fuel economy test. The RAV4 was a solid leader on the fuel economy front but the new Honda CR-V now claims that crown.

The Nissan Leaf relies solely on electric power for propulsion and was the first mass production EV (electric vehicle) sold in North America. No glorified golf cart here, the Leaf can seat up to five adults and has more than enough power to be driven a
highway speeds ... just like a normal car. When Leaf was released as a 2011 model year vehicle Nissan already had pre-sale orders for its entire first-year production run of 20,000 units. Based on a stretched version of Nissan’s B-platform, Leaf uses a low-slung Lithium-Ion battery pack to store its electrical energy and it’s located near the centre of the vehicle, under the
floor. In addition to ample rear cargo space, the battery position also helps make the Leaf more stable and more nimble than other EV’s. It’s a unique air cooled flat design of battery pack with four cells and 48 laminated modules. It weighs about 250 kg (600 lbs.) and came with an eight-year/160,000 km warranty. An 80kW AC synchronous electric motor drives the

Leaf’s front wheels. It can generate 107 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. Leaf has a rated driving range of 160 kilometres on a single charge, but it’s capable of going longer distances if the conditions are right and the driver conserves power. The battery pack can be charged up to 80 per cent of its full capacity within 30 minutes when connected to a dedicated (level 3) DC fast charger. A level two (typical home unit) charger hooked up to a 240V outlet can do a full charge in less than eight hours. The portable (level 1) charger can be used to topup power and connects to any (110-volt) electrical outlet. The
charger port is hidden behind a small door up front. The ultra quiet Leaf has a speaker near the front of the vehicle that makes a humming sound, at low vehicle speeds, to alert pedestrians to its presence. Like all electric motors, full power is available immediately. The (regenerative) brake pedal feel is a little different and the lack of telescopic steering column may put-off some buyers. The 2012 Nissan Leaf was essentially unchanged, however, the 2013 model year brought a bunch of technology upgrades and a new lower-priced base S trim level. An upgraded 6.6KW
onboard charger is capable of reducing level 2 charge time (with 30-amp service) to under four hours. This Leaf also comes with an improved energy management and regenerative braking systems, a more efficient heater and improved aerodynamics. Although the Leaf has consistently received a ‘Top Safety Pick’ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2013 edition got a ‘poor’ rating in a new (and tougher to pass) small overlap frontal crash test. This test is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another
vehicle or a fixed object like a tree or utility pole, at 64 km/ hour (40 mph). While saving money on fuel is great, most Leaf owners are more concerned about the environment and our dependency on oil. So far, general reliability appears to be very good and EV maintenance costs are typically lower than a gas engine vehicle. Limited availability on the used car market is not too surprisingly, as most owners are hanging on to their Nissan Leaf. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Kootenay corporate community gets kids in the great outdoors

Wild Voices for Kids took students on a snowshoeing adventure in Kootenay National Park.

A student gets up close learning about seeds during a Wild Voices for Kids program. Submitted
This summer the Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network launched a Kootenaywide Corporate Challenge with the goal of attracting 10
Kootenay-based businesses to sponsor the Wild Voices for Kids Program. This program started over a decade ago and now offers 125 different curriculumlinked environmental education field trips and presentations led by 75
local experts across the Kootenays. Since 2009, CBEEN has offered these programs to 50,000 students in all of the region’s 6 school districts. However, demand for these programs continues to grow. In order to help meet
this demand 10 local businesses have come on board and offered their support. VAST Resource Solutions (Cranbrook), Kootenay Mountain Works (Kimberley), Kootenay Co-op (Nelson), Oso Negro Coffee (Nelson), Overwaitea Foods (Kimberley), The Heidout (Cranbrook), Copper Point Resort (Invermere), Caliper
Machine & Hydraulics (Cranbrook) Williams and Associates (Cranbrook) and Conservation by Design Inc. (Nelson) all contributed to this campaign. In the 2013-14 school year over 300 environmental and heritage programs by local experts were presented to over 7,000 students. Last year’s Wild Voices for Kids programs included
hands-on fossil studies, snowshoeing adventures, and learning how animals survive even in extreme temperatures. Each presentation helps teachers to meet curriculum needs in a unique way, and is connected directly to our local environment. CBEEN also brought in Guest Educator Brian Keating, who is a renowned author, explorer, natural-
ist and professor. During his visit he treated hundreds of students to a special ‘Going Wild’ natural history presentation. “This was our fifth year of providing curriculum-linked programs to schools using local, passionate experts sharing their love and knowledge of the land, wildlife and ecosystems with children in the Basin. We couldn’t be happier with the number of students and the high quality of programming we offered in the last year!” said Susie MacDonald, Wild Voices for Kids Program Coordinator. “The Columbia Basin is leading by example, and is currently the only area in Canada where this type of programming exists. We are so fortunate to live in such a spectacular landscape that acts as a living classroom!” For more information on Wild Voices for Kids go to cbeen.org/wvfk or contact MacDonald at wildvoices@cbeen.org.
