The B.C. government is preparing to declare the second Sunday of September Terry Fox Day, recognizing the annual Marathon of Hope events around the world that raise money for cancer research.

Port MoodyCoquitlam MLA Linda Reimer presented a private member’s bill Thursday to recognize the day the annual runs have been held since 1980, when Fox embarked on a crosscountry run that was cut short by a relapse of cancer.

As a student at Simon Fraser University, Reimer recalled seeing Fox run around the campus quadrangle and wondering what he was training for.

“It honours a great man whose combination of strength, passion, idealism and sheer guts led to the impossible notion that he would run across Canada on one good leg and a prosthesis, the equivalent of a marathon a day,” Reimer told the legislature.

Premier Christy Clark said Reimer’s bill is expected to pass with unanimous support next week. She met with Terry’s father Rolly, sister Judith and brothers Darrell and Fred in her office Thursday to speak to reporters.

Darrell Fox said the declaration will encourage volunteers who organize Terry Fox runs, who have raised $650 million in the past 34 years.

“That’s why we’re so excited, because it gives them something to look forward to, to promote next year, and the fact that it has happened here in B.C.,” he said. “Terry Fox is everywhere, across this country and around the world, but he was from Port Coquitlam.”

Notes from the food challenge For many people in the province, being on welfare is not a choice—it is a necessity brought on through no fault of their own. A sickness, accident or simple corporate downsizing in a tough job market can turn a successful person into someone living on the provincial purse overnight. Because of this, the Welfare Food Challenge was started.

The aim is to prove that provincial welfare rates are far too low.

Donna Brady Fields, executive director with the United Way, is one of the local people taking the Welfare Food Challenge to see just what people on welfare have to face. With a budget of only $21 for food per week, Fields entered the challenge and saw firsthand what it means to be on welfare. Below is her account of the experience.

as I need.

Arrived at store after work after deciding to purchase: bread, milk, eggs, salmon, peanut butter, butter, salad ingredients, cereal and perhaps some fruit and yogurt. Entering the store with my cart I found a French bread display (usually don’t have white bread, but) at 97 cents I took a loaf as it would probably last me a week, needed to cut thin slices. Fresh salad vegetables – after 10-15 minutes comparing prices and estimating amounts I could purchase staying within $21, I decided to buy a Fresh Express small bag of salad mix - $1.97 and a $1.79 bottle of salad dressing which because I could not afford butter or margarine would do to replace as a spread.

Decided to head down to Dairy as I must have.

2L milk, 1 dozen eggs and then a $2 box of whole wheat cereal should cover me for breakfasts. Bananas, yogurt, a small can of salmon and because at this point 1 hour of shopping in, decided to take 2 cans of sardines as they were a $1 each and high in protein.

Never mind that I have not eaten sardines since I tried at my Grandpa’s urging as a kid, and did not wish to try again.

Figured I could mash up with condiments and onions, forgetting I would not have access to these food items.

Tough realization, that there were no small containers of items available that I could purchase at hopefully a low cost. Things like peanut butter, dried beans, rice, butter, coffee, etc.

Would not have coffee for a week…

Finally through the till, ended up spending $20.99 after getting the clerk to reduce my order by two bananas, leaving me with 5 for

the week. Much harder shopping trip compared to usual weekly food shopping.

First Day, October 16th Cereal and milk for breakfast, Sandwich with salmon mixed with salad dressing and some lettuce for lunch, and for supper 2 eggs cooked with a little water, no oil and small amount of yogurt.

Second Day, October 17th Second day same as above but had half a banana instead of yogurt for supper. Slight headache since last night so by the end of day decided to cheat with a cup of coffee, disappointed with myself.

Third Day, October 18th Cereal, milk and a little yogurt for breakfast, egg sandwich and half banana for lunch, supper small salad for supper with milk. Can not open sardines, even though hungry and tiring of menu. Feeling light headed and headache persists.

Fourth Day, October 19th 2 eggs with toast for breakfast, again cheating with coffee. By lunch time after feeling light headed most of morning had salmon sandwich with lettuce, banana and milk.

By 4 p.m. and not feeling okay, decided that it was time to quit the Food Challenge.

The experience has me feeling terrible that I could not last 7 days when so many are experiencing this every day of their lives with little hope of situation changing for them. Living with food being such an issue, thinking about what there is to eat and worrying about having enough is a terrible situation to be in.

This has to be changed.

To begin, thank you to all those running for office. We are fortunate to live in such an enthusiastic democracy.

Some friends have suggested that I tell part of the story of our moving here four years ago, which may explain my perspective.

In 2001, we moved back to my childhood home on Pender Island. We were soon followed by others who had made fortunes from selling their homes in Greater Vancouver, to others who had made fortunes in China, but were grateful to be free from Communism.

Some house prices on Pender increased four

fold in eight years. That might sound like a good thing unless you care about your children, and about the grandchildren that you don’t have yet. High housing prices destroy communities, as young people cannot afford appropriate homes, so they cannot afford to reproduce, at least not on purpose.

We decided to leave, and because we wanted to live somewhere where our sons might have more opportunities, I looked up every town in BC that had at least a college, and my wife and eldest son visited almost every one.

I also called realtors who gave them personal tours. We concluded that Cranbrook was the best place in BC, relative to real estate values.

Considering all that it has to offer, it is one of the best communities at any price.

Could it be better? Of course it could. I have read the city budget and way too many reports. I used to work for the government and am on the boards of four charities, so I am used to reading. There

are always ways to be more efficient, and property taxes here are very high. You could vote to reduce taxes for your own sake, but I would humbly suggest something else. What is outstanding about Cranbrook is that you can have children and grandchildren living in the same neighbourhood as yours, almost unheard of on the Coast.

The “something else” would be to deliberately invest time, energy and money in the lives of younger people. I am planning to be a senior, and am happy with that prospect, given the alternative. I do not expect to have anything like the challenges that our grandchildren are likely to have. Being more careful with tax money, and even deliberately reducing our own demands, leaves a little more behind for others.

I have been asked to share something about one charity in which my family is engaged.

We are currently in the later stages of planning a building that will run almost entirely on solar and geothermal energy, using off the shelf products, which cost less than a conventional furnace. Cranbrook is the

sunniest city in BC, well suited to solar power. It is also great for geothermal heating and cooling, given the large temperature difference between winter and summer.

Perhaps Cranbrook could encourage businesses in these fields.

I also have a comment about the recent meeting of the Union of BC Municipalities, which was reported here in Cranbrook. I must mention that I really love the oil business, for a very personal reason, since my late father in law was an oil engineer. My sons owe their very existence to Royal Dutch Shell. Having said that, I believe it is reasonable that communities are concerned about dangerous cargoes, and Canadian oil could be processed in Canada into Canadian products, with far less danger and far less contribution to climate change. If that did happen and ten of thousands of jobs were created in Canada, there would be many towns needed for shift workers, flying in and out as they do now to the oil patch. Cranbrook could offer to house a few more families.

Cod Gone Wild is coming Submitted This past year has been a whirlwind for Vernon based Modern Celtic Folk Rock band, Cod Gone Wild, performing over 125 shows across Western Canada in 2013 and are on track to do about the same this year after a crazy summer that saw the band travel as far south as San Francisco and as far north as Fort McMurray and many places in between.

SYNOPSIS OF PROPOSED BYLAWS BYLAW NO. 2533 – “Regional District of East Kootenay – Elko Fire Protection Service Establishment Bylaw No. 2533, 2014” – This Bylaw will establish a fire protection service in the Elko area as defined on the map which forms part of the Bylaw. The maximum amount that may be requisitioned annually for the service shall be $4.70 per $1,000 of taxable assessed value.

OBITUARY Della Holley March 24-1924-October 8, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Della Holley. Della was born in Magrath, AB. Della was happiest participating in her children's, grandchildren's and great grandchildren's lives.

She was predeceased by her husband Tom. She is survived by her children: Vera Drew, Linda Kerr, Wendy Smith, Rex Holley (Tai, Lee Holley Deluna), and spouses. Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

OBITUARY Lloyd Lode "Wimpy" 1936 - 2014 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Lloyd Lode announces his passing on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 in Cranbrook.

Lloyd was born on September 21, 1936. He was very proud of his 30 years of service with the City Of Cranbrook working as both a fire fighter and an ambulance driver and with Miles Murtack and the Township Of Moyie.

Lloyd is survived by his son Terry Lode (Bev), daughters Kim Boggs (Glen) and Robin Pinchak (Clayton), special friend Carol Doherty, his sister Elaine Tasker (Don), as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, relatives and friends.

A memorial service for Lloyd will be held at the Cranbrook Alliance Church on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at 1:00 pm.
