It’s practice time at the Cherry Creek Fire Department. Every Tuesday night, the volunteer firefighters gather at the fire hall to keep their skills sharp and their equipment in good shape.

Two of the firefighters there are a little younger than the others: Eric Gill and Caden Stephens, both 18.

They’re the department’s junior firefighters and the latest recruits in a system that has spanned over three decades.

All three of the Alberni Valley’s volunteer fire departments —Sproat Lake, Beaver Creek and Cherry Creek—run the junior firefighters’ program. Sproat Lake right now has three active juniors.

as a junior firefighter in the early 1970s. In 1983 he made the switch and became a senior firefighter. He’s been with the fire department ever since.

“Back in the day there was a bunch of us that

lived out here and we were told that the guys here needed help with pulling hoses, cleaning up, whatever needed to be done so a big group of us joined.”

While these days the fire department may have

fewer junior firefighters, Brick considers the current program to be more in-depth than the one he went through.

“It’s probably more intense than it was back then,” he said, adding that “back then it was way more hands-on and nowhere near the theoretical part in the classroom. I think [the current program] is the way to go,” he said.

“It’s a stepping stone for a long lasting career.”

A long lasting career in firefighting is in line with Stephens’ goals.

“My goal is to get with the city [department] and go to fire academy and hopefully live that dream,” he said.

Stephens grew up watching the fire department practice and having been turned away once for being too young, finally joined as a junior firefighter when he was 15.

Gill joined a little later, when he was 17.

Growing up, he was always interested in the medical field and felt like firefighting was a good way to get involved and put his first responders’ licence to use.

“I’ve learned more emergency scene skills, things about fires and life skills” that range from knot tying to how to use a chainsaw and operate generators.

It’s all knowledge that’s essential when the fire department gets called out to a scene, where the juniors know they’ll have to work just as hard as the seniors.

“We are treated just like a regular member,” said Gill.

Stephens agreed. “If I go to a call I’m usually one of the first guys to the hall and so I’m usually right in there. I definitely get to go in and do all the fun stuff,” he added.

Sending the juniors out to calls along with the senior firefighters gets

them prepared for what lies ahead if they choose to keep going.

“They practice with our regular crew and whatever we do, they do,” said Cherry Creek fire Chief Mike Sparrow. “It’s to see if they really want to be here.”

They’re given the same gear and trained to the same standard as the senior firefighters. One of the Cherry Creek firefighters recently went on to join the Vancouver Fire Department. They’ve also had firefighters move on to the city’s fire department, as has the Beaver Creek Fire Department, which along with the Sproat Lake Fire Department, also have a junior firefighting program.

Firefighters earn BC Hydro grant for unique fire training KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A Cherry Creek Fire Department volunteer firefighter got the chance to upgrade her training thanks to a BC Hydro grant.

Svetlana Zaytseva, 22, was able to take Instant Command Systems (ICS) 400 thanks to the BC Hydro Community Safety Award. The funding she received from the award was enough for fellow CCFD volunteer firefighter Rick Adams to also take the

course.

The course, which is offered through the Justice Institute of Canada in New Westminister, teaches firefighters how to take control in extemely chaotic situations. It’s the most senior ICS course and is suitable for fire scenes at events as large scale as the Olympics or as devastating as a tsunami.

“It’s on how to command a scene, it’s designed for big incidents,” said Cherrry Creek Fire

While Olympic level events don’t tend to happen around the Alberni Valley, much of the city is

considered a tsunami inundation zone.

“We can run a big scene now, a big disaster, we know all the protocols that go behind it,” Sparrow

said, adding that the fire department now has four firefighters trained to that level.

Those protocols come via the Emergency Management Response System.

“What it does is prioritize what they think is important to the area” should a major disaster occur.

“It goes through health and safety of the first responders, of the people there and then into infrastructure such as water, sewer, hydro, cell phone towers and then it goes all the

way down to personal property as the lowest part of the list.”

The system is in place to make sure that firefighters prioritize the larger picture, such as keeping the town running and communication lines open, over personal property which is more easily replaced.

The course tested Zaytseva’s and Adam’s knowledge of the system by creating practice scenarios.

“There was a large earthquake, multiple gas leaks

and flooding... it was good,” said Adams.

“We had to prioritize which incident we would go to first, where to send resources and establish command,” said Zaytseva.

That’s a scenario akin to what might happen here if a major tsunami were to strike and rare as events like that are, Zaytseva is glad to be prepared.

“They don’t happen often, the large incidents, but when they do happen not many people know what to do.”

Knezevic said that if the hub operates at even 30-40 per cent of its capacity it would employ at least a couple hundred staff.

That number would go up by aboout 150 people per container ship docked at the hub. A trans-shipment hub at Sarita Bay could also be good news for proponents of the proposed Steelhead LNG facility.

Two Huu-ayaht First Nations representatives are joining the province’s trade mission to India.

HFN Councillor John Jack and executive director James Edwards be joining Premier Christy Clark and Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk, as well as the Port Alberni Port Authority CEO Zoran Knezevic on a trade mission to explore economic opportunities in the Asia Pacific region.

In a release, Edwards said that “this is an opportunity to be in the same room as some of their biggest potential customers” for the trans-shipment hub and the Steelhead LNG facility, both of which would be built on Huu-ay-aht land at Sarita Bay. Continued / A10

Inbrief Candidate cut-off on Friday for election Outdoor water restrictions for the city were lifted as of Tuesday, Oct. 7.

According to the city utilities superintendent Brian Mousley, “water levels in the reservoirs remain the same but average daily usage has dropped by 3000 square metres” per day since July. The average usage for September was 13,281 sq. m. compared to 17,660 sq. m. in July.

Community cleans up

Port Alberni’s Community Clean Up Week runs until Sunday, Oct. 12. Residents, business and community groups are all invited to pitch in and help keep the community clean.

To get gloves, bags and other tools from the city, as well as arrange for the pickup of full garbage bags, call 250720-2822.

Two specific cleanups are being organized; Canal Beach on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 8:30 a.m. and Papermill Dam on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 10 a.m.

Forest grants available

The Alberni Valley Community Forest Committee is currently accepting applications from community groups for special projects that will benefit the Alberni Valley. Applications for the grant funding are due on Dec. 15.

Virtual exploration

Last summer, Google dropped by Pacific Rim National Park Reserve to map the trails, islands and beaches. Now you can see the fruits of their labour by paying the park a “virtual visit” via Google Maps or Google Earth. The mapping of the park was part of a project with Google Canada to present Canada’s most treasured places for visitors from all around the world to explore.

Too many hurt at home Oil a slippery slope for municipalities World peace is a worthy concept, but first we need to get our own houses in order.

Domestic violence continues to be a problem in Nanaimo, and even if it’s a problem everywhere, that’s no reason why we should ever accept it.

Nanaimo RCMP respond to about 1,000 domestic violence calls per year in the city. Just as troubling as that figure is the knowledge that there are other incidents going unreported. Sometimes those can be the scariest situations, where victims are too fearful to say a word.

Domestic violence was prominent in the news this month as a pro football player was caught on video knocking out his fiancée, and was subsequently kicked out of the league.

It created dialogue across the continent about abusive relationships, why women stay in them, and how they can leave. Domestic violence is despicable, though the issues and emotions that stem from it are sometimes complicated.

Haven Society has a handle on some of those issues and emotions. The Nanaimo non-profit would like to work with police, including the RCMP’s Community Victim Services, the Provincial Office of Domestic Violence and other social agencies as part of a proposed domestic violence unit.

Increased community co-operation could allow all involved to deal more effectively with high-risk cases, then support and encourage victims who might be hesitant to make statements to police or testify in court. It’s crucial that the system works and that there’s a transition plan in place for victims, because women need to be able to see a way out.

For those women reluctant to speak up, we hope this new unit can help to speak for them, because it speaks for the rest of us.

We all agree domestic abuse is abhorrent and atavistic. We hope the men at fault get their comeuppance, but more so, we hope that for these women who are hurt, things will get better.

ICTORIA – Every year when B.C.’s municipal politicians get together to preach to the provincial cabinet, there comes a point in the maze of resolutions where things go sideways.

Last year it was a misinformed, impossible demand to ban all traces of genetic engineering.

Before that they thumbed their mobile phones and denounced wireless power meters. Both votes passed by narrow margins in a half-empty chamber, with many delegates focused on the serious community issues they are elected to address.

This year it was a charge led by Burnaby to denounce the proposed Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion. And this time it was defeated.

To the Editor,

I, for one, am opposed to either of the proposed Roger Creek crossings.

If it is the original $14.6 million plan or the latest alternative at half that amount, it is still for too expensive.

The city is currently carrying too much debt and we, the taxpayers, are on the hook to pay down the principle plus hundreds of thousands in interest.

It is time to put a plan in place to pay down the debt, not add to it.

We have done without this crossing for many years now and I do not think the minutes we would save driving across town come even close to justifying spending that kind of money.

What needs to be done is to concentrate available resources

in maintaining and upgrading our existing, aging, infrastructure – roads, water mains & sewer lines.

It is time for a wake-up call at city hall – let’s get the priorities right.

Cheaper plan needs thought To the Editor,

The late Charlie Haggard, as a private citizen, put forward the “Horne Lake” connector proposal as an alternative highway route out of the valley. This suggestion continues to simmer. Mr. Jim Rhodes has suggested an alternative route to the cities $14.6 million dollar proposal for a second crossing.

His suggestion, as detailed in The News, (Oct. 2) deserves serious consideration.

There are other immediate advantages to Rhode’s proposal besides cost. Traffic lights already exist at Cherry Creek and Johnston. This northern exit point better serves the mall and the residential areas that would most benefit from a second crossing.

I believe, having hiked the trails in the

area of the loop route he proposes, that a significant real estate opportunity would emerge on the north side of Roger Creek.

This route eliminates a major problem, (the steep climb into and out of the Roger Creek gorge) for walkers and cyclists.

This proposal facilitates easy trail connection to the existing popular Roger Creek trail network. And finally, Rhode’s proposal is an excellent compromise for those favouring a 21st Street crossing.

The civic election referendum proposal is, in my opinion, meant to fail. Thus, Rhodes’ second crossing proposal shouldn’t just be under debate; it should be given very serious consideration.

His time spent formulating this proposal is much appreciated.

forestry operations in McLaughlin Ridge.

Not only does it lie within the China Creek watershed, but it’s also home to abundant wildlife, some of which need old growth forest to survive. The habitat issue is equally if not more important than the water issue.

But we can count on the directors once again to forget about or delay/defer any effective action on the vital matter of McLaughlin Ridge.

It’s most painful to watch the inaction of that group and the effects their lackadaisical attitudes have on this community.

Group not democratic To the Editor,

I find it very naïve of Alberni First candidates to consent in advance and subjugate themselves by agreeing to be influenced by what can be described as, or compared to, a lobbyist organization.

These candidates willingly agree to be indebted to this group of 100 by consenting to conform to the association’s own decision making, for

our entire community, if they become officials in our local government.

Alberni First admits their agenda is to establish an inordinate socioeconomic power, based on the description of their rules for their endorsed candidates as described by Sharie Minions: “Once a decision is made the entire Alberni First group will support that decision regardless of how the vote falls.”

This practise will demean local legislation by twisting it away from fairness, in order to serve the association’s own priorities. We need to defuse this selfinterest group before any exploitation occurs. Do these 100 members genuinely represent the interests of our entire community?

Was every person in Port Alberni offered the opportunity to participate in Alberni First? Of course not, a democratic process is not the way to go when the top echelon’s plans don’t cover the collective needs of the community as a whole.

The Tseshaht First Nations members that last week blocked industrial use access to the Nahmint Valley have allowed logging contractors to remove their equipment from the British Columbia Timber Sales area.

Early in the morning on Oct. 2, members of a grassroots committee blocked access to the area off Gracie and Stirling Arm main logging roads. They have maintained the road closure since then.

“We decided on our own we needed to apply some pressure to an issue that has been going on far too long,” spokesperson Anne Robinson said.

The Tseshaht called an emergency band meeting for Wednesday after the News went to press.

An injured puppy got a dose of good luck thanks to the quick response of Tofino Air’s chief pilot Sean Porter.

Porter was en route to Tofino after dropping off two passengers at Hot Springs Cove when Tofino Air base manager Bruce Faith received a call from the SPCA regarding an injured puppy.

The hound-labrador mix was just 14 weeks old when he was struck by a car near Ahousaht on the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 1, resulting in road rash and a femur that was broken in two places.

“When we heard about it, we were obviously trying to get the puppy out” of there, said AlberniClayoquot SPCA branch manager Irene Towell.

Faith quickly radioed Porter and the two of them decided to reroute the plane to Ahousaht in order to pick up the injured puppy, Bubba. Ahousaht, a small First Nations community on Flores Island in Clayoquot Sound, is accessible only by boat or plane, something that makes getting injured animals out of there a challenge for the SPCA. Porter dropped off Bubba in Tofino, where an SPCA volunteer was waiting to take him into Port Alberni.

While medical evacuations aren’t unusual for Tofino Air, Faith said this one was a little out of the ordinary.

“We don’t usually do them for puppies, only for people.”

Bubba is currently recovering at the SPCA after having his leg set at a local veterinarian. Towell said that he should

Drive What you can’t see is the 317 kgs that the ‘15 F-series has lost, thanks to that aluminum body and the increased use of high-strength steel in the frame – but, you can certainly feel it while driving. The truck is nimbler, has less wash in the corners and simply handles better. The cab is virtually silent and for comfort, the HVAC is split side-toside, front and rear. The hood and side windows have dropped in profile for better visibility, while the size, colours and quality of the computer generated gauges and controls simplifies operation while driving. I towed with the new truck and its manners are good if not improved. In part, this is assisted by the long list of towing features like trailer sway control; tow/haul mode; Dynamic Hitch Assist, SelectShift transmission and better tow mirrors.

The Alberni Ladies nine- and 18-hole leagues held their closing luncheon at Alberni Golf Club earlier this week.

Nine-hole ladies playing 10 games or better were eligible for a prize and the winner was Louise Berlinski.

For the best game on the ringer board, La Donna Knutson won a prize. She was also presented with a breaking 100 pin.

Having the most chip-ins for the season was Kath Stolth.

Marta Williamson won for the most birdies, while the Isobel Pearson Trophy for the most pars went to Claudia Romaniuk.

The Helen Weaver Trophy for the best putting of the season went to Julie Swaney.

Winning the Mary Dyson Trophy by lowering her handicap by nine points was Lee Anne Van Lent,

For the overall club championship, third low net was won

by Katie Cyr, Carol Hastings won second low net and Shirley Goodman won first low net.

went to Kathy White, second to Pat Nicklin and the Evelyn Stirzaker trophy for first low gross was won by Carol Bouchard.

There was a tie between Carol Bouchard and Kathy White for the Summer Trophy. Par Bowl trophy runner up was Marie Randall and the winner was Katie Cyr. There was also a tie for the Lowest Putts of the season between Katie Cyr and Leona Fowler. The most chip ins went to Katie Cyr. The trophy for Handicap Reduction was won by Katie Cyr. For the ringer board, low gross was won by Pat Nicklin and Low net was won by Gayle Rhodes.

Players open 37th season with ‘Woman in Black’

P

ortal Players Dramatic Society opens its 37th season on Oct. 10 with The Woman In Black, based on the 1983 book by Susan Hill and more recently made into a movie starring Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame.

In this tale adapted for the stage, Port Alberni’s 78-year old Capitol Theatre plays the role of an empty Victorian theatre, where an old Arthur Kipps relates an eerie story of his youth to a young actor who he has hired to dramatize the story. When they run through the play, however, things begin to go terribly wrong.

Many people are now familiar with the film The Woman in Black. However, the stage play takes a different

Director David McGarry knew that casting this production would be integral to its success; the script rests firmly upon the shoulders of its two male leads.

“I knew that we could make this production really special with the right actors, and when I was able to cast Chris Arthurs and Cody Taylor I knew that we had a show.”

Arthurs and Taylor are experienced actors with a history of roles with Portal Players. They acted together in Reefer Madness: The Musical! in 2013 and The Rocky Horror Show in 2009.

– David McGarry Outside of the theatre the two are good friends—so good, that Taylor served as Arthurs’ best man at his wedding last month.

“Once we had the cast in place, the pressure was on to ensure that we would have the technical support to bring the show to the next

level,” adds producer Brent Ronning.

“The lighting, sound, and special effects would need to be above and beyond what we normally attempt to do in our theatre. We wanted to challenge ourselves creatively to do some different things to inspire ourselves, and bring something memorable to our audience.”

Says McGarry: “When Peter Wienold agreed to work on the complex soundscape for the show, and with my background in lighting design, I knew that we could make this ghost story come to life in our theatre.”

The Community Arts Council will host its final lantern making workshop for children and adults at Echo Centre on Wed. Oct. 22 from 6-9 p.m. Learn how to make bamboo and tissue paper lanterns.

Creativity is the key to this workshop.

New art show mixes media Our next art exhibit will open Thursday,

Oct. 16 and will showcase the many new and exciting works from potter Elspeth Watson and watercolours by painter Norm Nicholson.

Watson has put a

Japanese spin on this exhibit; pottery is not just utilitarian, but beautiful and graceful. Nicholson’s watercolours are soothing to the eye, with his beautiful blending of light and colour.

This is Watson’s first exhibit in more than 30 years, so mark your calendars. This exhibit will run until Nov. 15.
