Lacombe resident named ‘2014 Mom of the Year’ Marlene Pannenbecker plans to donate money to Dominican Feed the Kids

A

local woman has earned a top title for her work and dedication.

On Oct. 20th, Marlene Pannenbecker was announced as the 2014 Mom of the Year Community Champion category winner in Walmart’s Mom of the Year contest.

Pannenbecker said that she was surprised and excited when she was informed about her winning.

“When they initially called me, because I never expected it, I did a little scream and a dance,” said Pannenbecker.

In July, when she was announced as a finalist, Pannenbecker said it was unlikely that she would win the contest as she thought she was too far behind the leader in votes to win. However, that was when Pannenbecker was unaware there would be more than one first place winner announced.

It actually wasn’t long after she was announced as a finalist that Pannenbecker was made aware she would be one of the winners. She was sworn to secrecy, with the exception of being able to tell her family and closest friends, until the announcement was made official this week.

Initially, when she was first made aware of her nomination, she said she was a little embarrassed about it. She said she has kind of become used to the idea, but the whole experience is still a bit strange to her.

“I think I’ve come to terms with it. My friends all tell me that I should embrace it, enjoy it and be happy about it, which I am,” said Pannenbecker. “It’s just not my nature to be in the spotlight, but I’m getting used to it. I’m not embarrassed by it, I’m more humbled.”

As a result of the contest, Pannenbecker will receive $10,000 for herself and $10,000 to go to the charity of her choice. She has chosen Dominican Feed the Kids to be the charity that will receive the donation.

Dominican Feed the Kids is a charity that is close to Pannenbecker’s heart for a number of reasons. It is through her family’s work with the organization that she met her four adopted children from the Dominican.

The charity is run by Pannenbecker’s sister and brother-in-law.

The organization is a program that runs thrice weekly in the Dominican village of Ascension that feeds 200-300 children daily.

With the funds from the Walmart Mom of the Year contest, Dominican Feed the Kids hopes to expand that program to serve the nearby village of Puncha Mateo, one that is in even more dire need of assistance, said Pannenbecker.

When her sister was visiting earlier this year, Pannenbecker asked her what would

be done with the $10,000. She was told there is a lot that could be done by Dominican Feed the Kids with $10,000, but the current priority is expanding that program.

“There are so many places you can pick to put $10,000 in a charity like that because it always needs help and always needs money.”

She added there is yet another neighbouring village that her sister is hoping to aid through Dominican Feed the Kids sometime in the future as well.

Not only is the donation to the organization important to Pannenbecker, it’s important to her family and especially her children. The four youngest of Pannenbecker’s seven children were all adopted from the Dominican Republic.

Pannenbecker said it has always been maintained in her family that her children’s roots are not forgotten. She has also instilled in her family the importance of giving back.

“I think the one thing that I’m proudest of is the fact that all seven of our kids have hearts of gold, they would give to anyone,” said Pannenbecker. “That is their motto in life, to help others, because we have been helped a lot and I’m proud of that part.”

As such, Pannenbecker’s children were excited about the award and did not question at all where it was going, she said.

“It really was impressive to me that when we did win the money the kids knew exactly where it was going and how happy they were about that,” said Pannenbecker.

She added that Dominican Feed the Kids has taken on an even more special meaning since the death of her son Damian, who was killed in a crash near Olds earlier this year at the age of 19. Marlene said her sister and Damian were very close and the charity always meant a lot to Damian.

“It would mean a lot to (Damian) to know that the money we have won has gone back (to Dominican Feed the Kids),” said Marlene.

The organization is of course not the only benefactor from Marlene’s award. In July, she said she was at a bit of a loss with what to do with her own $10,000 award should she win.

Now that she has been announced a winner, Marlene’s friends have stepped up and helped her decide. As January will be a very difficult month for the Pannenbeckers with the anniversary of Damian’s death, Marlene’s friends have organized a girls’ trip to Mexico with Marlene and 15 of her friends during that month.

Marlene said the vacation will be an interesting change as when she takes vacations herself with her family, they usually take working vacations and work with Dominican Feed the Kids. news@lacombeexpress.com

FCSS launches Coats for Kids after Sip N’ Savour

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Once again, Lacombe and area has shown overwhelming support for the Lacombe & District Family and Community Support Services.

On Oct. 17th Lacombe FCSS held its annual Sip N’ Savour event at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

The evening of delicious drinks and enchanting eats was once again an incredible event for the organization.

“It was a roaring success,” said Jan Pocock, volunteer and community services coordinator for FCSS. Pocock added the totals are still being counted, but she estimated that this year’s Sip N’ Savour event was on par with last year’s and will bring in around $8,000.

As with every year, the people of Lacombe were not at all stingy when it came to giving to FCSS. “The people are so generous when they come, they are amazing,” said Pocock.

This year, Lacombe FCSS added two new features to the Sip N’ Savour event.

One was the ability make one-on-one donations directly to programs and the other was the addition of Bernard Callebaut Chocolates of Red Deer to the palette of tastes available for sampling at the event.

Both events were successful.

Pocock said the one-onone donations, where donations went directly to individuals or individual programs (for example, a donor could support a lifeline for a senior for one month) went over particularly well.

“It was really well received.”

Pocock also said that the chocolates added to the theme of the Sip N’ Savour event.

“It added yet another level of class to this classy event,” she said.

Pocock added she plans on making both additions to future Sip N’ Savour events.

“They will be repeats for sure.”

Lacombe FCSS start the Sip N’ Savour fundraiser as a way to ‘fill the gaps’ in its funding, said Pocock.

She said that this big blanket fundraiser allows for FCSS to fund programs that don’t always receive a lot of regular funds from the public or elsewhere.

She gave the example of the tax-filing program that FCSS offers.

She said the program is done all through volunteers, but money is still needed to pay for things like the actual computer software used in the program.

“Events like these help cover those (programs),” said Pocock.

“We need this money to continue to give the services to the people in need in our community.”

There are also services like the Coats for Kids program where families in need can purchase good quality warm winter wear for their children. The annual program has already kicked off and is underway for this year.

“We are open for business as we speak right now.”

Interested families can stop by the Lacombe FCSS offices to pick up an appli-

cation for the program.

Pocock said requirements for the program are based on the income of the family.

Once families are accepted, they receive a voucher for a certain amount of money based on the age of their children.

She said that includes everything from winter boots to ski pants to snowsuits

to mittens and toques. She added that families even get to decide on the colours and styles of that winter wear.

Last year, Coats for Kids benefited 64 children from 27 families.

Pocock said 33 snowsuits, 20 winter coats, nine pairs of winter boots, nine sets of mittens and toques and five pairs of ski-pants were distributed to families in need.

She also reiterated how thankful she is for the support of the community at FCSS events like Sip N’ Savour because without it, programs like Coats for Kids would not be possible.

Libraries offer much more than meets the eye

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Technology, community space, clubs, meetings and programs are all common factors of extended library amenities that are now available in most libraries.

Alberta libraries have been growing and changing with the demands of the public – most now offer access to e-books, magazines, movies and music online.

There are so much more to libraries than just books; they are an important community resource.

For Blackfalds, the library is a popular space.

Carly Binder, branch manger, said that their demographic is quite young, so most of the programs run through the library are directed towards that age group. However, a number of adult clubs and groups also utilize the space at the library. “We have quite a few groups that meet here, such as a Bible study in the evenings. If anyone needs a meeting space, we try to allow space for it. It is a hub where a lot of things happen,� said Binder. “We have inter-agency groups we meet with – either run by the Town or are private – just to make sure that we are utilizing the spaces here, and helping each other out. We let people know that they can come here and use our space.�

Most libraries have a similar connection to their community. Libraries offer a place to gather information, to share that information and to explore new things.

The Blackfalds Library has a great focus on youth programs, with the major ones being a kids’ program that runs from January to June and then halts as the Summer Reading Program picks up.

The Blackfalds Library also has a special connection to the local food bank in that during the month of October, as well as other times throughout the year the library promotes the bank by collecting donations as admission prices to events.

Currently, Food For Fines is a program running out of the Blackfalds Library where members can bring in a donation for the food bank and their late fees will be wiped. “It doesn’t matter if you have $50 in late fees; you

can bring in one item or 50 and it will clear your fees.

The majority of our patrons clear their account fees with this program.�

The Blackfalds Library also offers events such as movie nights and senior tea parties, and is also a place where people can learn languages for free using the Mango Languages program.

The Mary C. Moore Public Library (MCMPL) in Lacombe offers children’s programs as well, and much like Blackfalds, hosts a number of community events. Three of the most well-known and wellreceived programs at the MCMPL include children’s programs with Miss Mary, the Armchair Travel program and the award win-

ning Lacombe Local History lecture series. “We won an Alberta Government Municipal Affairs Minister’s Award for Innovation & Library Public Service in 2010, and that was huge for us. The Friends of the Library organize speakers for us and collect donations, which they are great for because they always give back to

the library,� said Connie Schiffner, library technician at the Mary C Moore.

Both libraries are part of a province-wide program that connects libraries all over Alberta.

It is called a Me Library Program and begins with new library cards that are registered online to an email address. The Me card allows users to travel

between participating libraries, checking out and returning products to multiple locations.

Sisters of Soul supports breast cancer research

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Red Deer Express Sisters of Soul was once again a success, organizers say.

Organizer Rhanda Bonet-Graham said each year the concert raises more money. This year’s donations are still being totaled, but are already over $2,000 which beats the $1,800 raised last year and $800 the year before.

Those who attended the concert were treated to a showcase of talent from Canadian University College students, staff and

alumni. Sisters of Soul featured 13 performances by female artists and their accompaniments in a wide variety of different mediums and genres.

“Every year brings exciting new performers,” said Bonet-Graham. “But the cause, the desire, the passion to make a difference does not change.”

Bonet-Graham founded the concert along with a group of her classmates while she was a student of music at the Canadian University College in 1999.

It was then held annually for five years and then

had a hiatus until 2012.

When Bonet-Graham and her classmates graduated, no one else stepped in to continue holding the concert and it was not held due to this lack of internal support. Eight years later, Andrea Luxton, then president of CUC, approached CUC staff member Bernice Leavitt to see what could be done to bring back the concert.

Leavitt received some funding for Sisters of Soul through CUC and the concert was held again in 2012 and every year since.

Lacombe County council re-elects reeve Lacombe County council re-elected Division 4 Councillor Paula Law as reeve at its annual organizational meeting on Tuesday.

Law assumed the reeve’s chair for a second one-year term after taking her Oath of Office from County Com-

missioner Terry Hager.

She expressed thanks to council for its support and pledged to perform her duties in a fair and straightforward manner.

ARRESTS MADE IN BREAK AND ENTERS On Oct. 20th, Lacombe Police responded to a report that suspicious individuals were attempting to break into vehicles and homes in the area of Henners Road in Lacombe.

Police were informed that a man and woman had been observed exiting a parked vehicle, a white Dodge Ram truck and then proceeded to walk down the street and attempt to enter parked vehicles and the front doors of several residences.

Police investigated and as a result have arrested Sean David Porter and Natasha Verna Clark of Red Deer.

Porter and Clark have both been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of break-in tools, attempt to break-in to a dwelling house and two counts of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

In addition, Clark has also been charged with possession of a controlled substance and six counts of breach of conditions.

Porter and Clark made their first appearance in Red Deer Provincial Court on Tuesday.

Both Porter and Clark will remain in custody until their next court appearance, scheduled for Oct. 29th.

mined that a northbound pickup truck with seven occupants proceeded through a red light at a high rate of speed when it collided with a westbound pickup truck.

The impact caused the northbound pickup to roll over, and it came to rest on the CP railway tracks running parallel to Hwy. 2A. While the westbound pickup sustained substantial damage, the lone male driver did not sustain any significant injuries, police said.

The 19-year-old male driver of the northbound pickup was initially transported to Red Deer Regional Hospital, then later flown by STARS to Foothills Hospital in Calgary. One other passenger also sustained serious injuries and was flown from the collision scene by STARS to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton.

Two other passengers in the northbound pickup were transported to area hospitals by ground ambulance.

The three remaining passengers were treated by EMS for minor injuries at the scene and released. Railway traffic on the main CP Rail line was delayed for several hours as a result of the collision.

As a result of the investigation by the Lacombe Police Service, Trevor Michael Anderson of Lacombe was arrested on Oct. 9th and charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, operating a motor vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and dangerous driving.

Anderson was released on an appearance notice and will appear in Reed Deer Provincial Court on Nov. 18th.

For Bonet-Graham, the Sisters of Soul concert is important not just for her, but for everyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer.

“My experience, unfortunately, is not unique,” said Bonet-Graham. “I’m not the only little girl who’s lost her mom to breast cancer. We really wanted to do this event so that it wouldn’t happen as often as it does.”

Last year, Bonet-Graham returned to CUC as a staff member and resumed her involvement with the concert as well.

“Of course, I didn’t hesitate to get back into it,” said Bonet-Graham with a smile. She also commended Leavitt for her dedication to the concert and the CUC for its financial support.

OPINION Community shows support In May of last year, about a month after the Lacombe Express first began publishing, we ran an opinion piece which spoke of how Lacombe truly is a community in that it embodies and exudes a community spirit.

Now that we have been part of the community for a year and a half, we have seen even more of how much of a community Lacombe truly is.

Last week, three charitable fundraising events were held in Lacombe. All three annual events (the Lacombe FCSS Sip N’ Savour, the Knights of Columbus Oktoberfest and the Sisters of Soul concert to benefit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation) were well attended and received great support from the community.

Elsewhere in this week’s newspaper, readers can find stories detailing how important these events are to the organizations that host them and how grateful they are for the extremely generous support of the community. Even though we

have covered several such events and should by now be accustomed to the generosity of Lacombians, we are always taken aback – and so are the organizers and benefactors of such events.

Speak to FCSS Volunteer and Community Services Coordinator Jan Pocock, A Better World Founder Eric Rajah, or anyone else who commonly holds fundraising events in the community. Their reactions to the generosity of their supporters always resonates with feelings of pure gratitude and even surprise.

“We were overwhelmed,” “We were shocked,” “We never expected”. All of these phrases are common in responses from such individuals when speaking about the amount of support seen for a fundraiser. The same goes for the impromptu fundraisers Lacombe is known to organize whenever a member of the community is in need.

When a massive fire totaled three homes in Lacombe this past

July, it was hours before a donation centre had been set up where clothing could be dropped off for the families who lost their homes.

More recently, when Lacombian Leah Cobetto was struck by an alleged drunk driving while walking home last month, it was days before members of the community had organized an online auction to raise money for her and her family

and the facebook group promoting the auction and other fundraiser efforts grew from 130 to 700 people in three days.

Lacombe is a shining example of what a community can do when it comes together. Everyone who lives in this community should be proud to be a part of the incredible things we can accomplish together.

Flu shots are beneficial for everyone – not just the person who receives them. Sure, it’s a little annoying. Your arm is sore and some people may feel a little unwell for a couple hours, but it is absolutely worth it.

I admit – I didn’t used to get vaccinations because I was raised in a home where that didn’t happen regularly if at all. However, knowing what I know about ‘herd immunization’, I now understand that everyone who is able to should get a flu shot.

The concept of herd immunity or ‘community immunity’ is smart.

It is a means of protecting the portion of a population who can’t receive vaccinations, and therefore cannot build immunity to a particular disease.

That means that some people will catch the flu and not be able to fight it. They will often have more severe symptoms and longer-lasting bouts of illness. People who have immune disorders, organ transplants and even those with egg allergies are within the population of people who cannot receive immunizations, specifically flu shots.

It’s coming to be that time of the year where the flu runs rampant.

Nobody wants to be sick at home, feeling miserable and being miserable. Flu shots don’t guarantee you

MENDONSA won’t get the flu, but they will help your body fight off an infection quicker. They will help your body fight off the strain and will make the chances of sharing your sickness much slimmer.

Some people flat out refuse immunizations, usually either because they believe they are dangerous or that they will make you sick.

There are adults who refuse to get vaccinated because they believe they can handle a cold or flu.

There are parents who refuse to immunize their children because they don’t ‘trust’ the vaccines, and are under the impression that immunizations can actually cause illnesses.

So let’s set a few things straight.

First of all, getting a flu shot will not give you the flu. This has been proven, and there are a number of creditable web sites that will tell you this, as well as any pharmacist or doctor.

Secondly, it will not render you completely immune to the disease.

Yes, there is a chance that one can get the flu after receiving a flu shot.

However, the symptoms will be less severe and not debilitating.

Third, and perhaps most importantly, getting vaccines benefits everyone in your community. It helps to stop the spread of viruses and helps protect people who are not able to receive the preventative shots.

I’d like to take a step back to the myth that ‘flu shots will give you the flu’. This is impossible because vaccines use dead strains of illnesses simply so your body can recognize what the disease looks like and prepare antibodies to fight it.

Some people will swear up and down that it was ‘that darn flu shot’ that got them sick – and completely forget that they interact with tons of people per day and any number of those people could have passed on a bug.

People often misinterpret the side effects from a flu shot. Usually, it’s only a sore arm or muscle.

Previously, before the vaccine was in a way reinvented, some people felt mild cold symptoms. Also, this is cold and flu season. Things are going around. If someone gets sick after a shot, they don’t stop to consider that they were likely in a doctors’ office or pharmacy, surrounded by sick people.

Flu shots should be done every year. They are beneficial for

the person who receives the shot, elderly people who will have a tougher time fighting infection, small children and babies. Those populations will likely get much sicker than the average person, and therefore need to be protected.

Flu shots are usually free now, too. Vaccines have saved countless lives and prevented more deaths than any other treatment available.

The flu shot is safe for pregnancies, and there are studies available to prove this point. This protects the mother and in turn, the child.

Just be sure to let a doctor know beforehand if you are pregnant or think you might be.

A flu shot will stimulate a person’s body so that they can develop and use the proper antibody to fight the infection. A body has a way of knowing if it has fought an infection prior or not, and this makes the recovery time a little bit faster. Vaccines give your body a chance to develop the antibody for later, without the nasty discomfort of actually having the flu.

You are still vulnerable for a few days after a flu shot, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

Herd immunity is extremely important, and if that doesn’t matter to you, self-preservation ought to be motivation enough. kmendonsa@lacombeexpress.com

The history of the Meridian Camp About one century ago, the land at the southwest corner of Gull Lake was owned by a man named Brownlow.

FREDEEN During the summer months he provided scenic lake tours to vacationers in his small sailboat, the Seagull. The anchorage for this craft was the point where the 5th meridian intersected the south shore of Gull Lake, a site that became known as Meridian Beach.

In 1927, Rev. Layton, minister of Lacombe’s St. Andrews United Church, purchased 5.5 acres at this site from Harry Brownlow.

Here in company with the United Church minister from Millet he founded what is now recognized as the first church camp ever held in the province of Alberta.

They collected tents and 34 boys in 1928 and proceeded to clear enough space in the

bush to erect the tents, borrowing cooking utensils and buying a second hand stove on credit. Mrs. Layton was undoubtedly the cook and somehow she managed to cook under an umbrella for it was a rainy season and a kitchen to shelter the stove was yet to be constructed.

Everyone sat on logs to eat and they escaped from the rain only by retreating to the tents. But the camp was a great success and other youth wanted in. So in 1929 the communities of Lacombe, Bentley, Clive and Ponoka donated $529 to enlarge the camp area and erect a permanent building.

Adjacent land (three acres) was purchased for $240, a building 46 x 22 ft. was erected, utensils and dishes purchased and all of this for a financial outlay of $428.

That sum included only $14 for labour.

This same year also saw girls at the summer camp when Miss Helen Berry brought her CGIT camp here.

This was a turning point in camp attendance with girls outnumbering boys in every year that followed.

A deep well (167 ft.) was bored in 1930, four tents were purchased and attendance

was 52 boys and 56 girls.

From 1929 to 1937 Rev. Layton and his wife spent one month every summer (his entire vacation period) conducting and supervising this camp.

On his departure to a new charge in Medicine Hat he gifted his 5.5 acres of this property to St Andrew’s United Church in Lacombe.

The transfer of title recorded the new owner as the United Church of Canada instead of St. Andrew’s United Church.

This error went unnoticed until 1954 when two adjacent properties were gifted to St. Andrews by W. Peterson and consolidation of title recorded all of the Gull Lake property in the name of the United Church of Canada. Recognition and resolution of this error did not take place until 1968.

Meridian Camp as it was known throughout Alberta became the scene of annual summer camps - each one open to all congregations in the Lacombe Presbytery.

Planning, staffing and operating these camps was a cooperative effort among all participating churches but because of its location the primary users and the

primary contributors of finances and volunteer labour was the congregation of St. Andrew’s.

It was one of the favored sites for annual congregational picnics and was available for use by all youth groups, church, CGIT, Guides and Scouts as well as Presbytery gatherings of adults.

The largest congregation to enjoy this campsite was Gaetz United Church of Red Deer. However, in time they developed their own summer church camp called Kasota on Sylvan Lake and Presbytery understandably chose to concentrate its support on this larger site.

This divided the Sunday school population of the area into the ‘Meridianites’ and the ‘Kasotaites.’

Lacombe, although it was providing through Presbytery substantial financial support and considerable volunteer leadership and physical labor to Kasota, chose to continue to maintain and utilize Meridian.

This dual support continued until the province enacted strict health regulations and the investment required to meet the new standards at two locations proved prohibitive.

What’s New Citizen submissions for inclusion into 2015 Budget At their regular meeting on October 14, 2014, Council passed a resolution to support the inclusion of selected suggestions submitted through the Citizens Submission program in the 2015 budget. The approved suggestions include: • Walk-through entrance to Heritage Park: the addition of two pedestrian access points at a cost of $1,200. A review of pedestrian traďŹƒc is this area is recommended before access points are constructed. • Cranna Lake south side park – park setting with benches, trees and owers: the addition of benches, trees, and owers to the south side of the lake at a cost of $3,500.

Water meter change-out program offers greater accuracy for Lacombe residents The City of Lacombe is currently in the midst of a four year project to replace all manualread water meters within the city with a more eďŹƒcient radio-read system, so that sta can obtain water meter readings remotely. The municipality contracted Neptune Technology Group to install the new meters, and installers have been working on an area by area basis since May 2014.

Between May and June 1,095 manual-read residential meters were switched over to the new meters after meter readings were taken by the City in April. A ďŹ nal read of each meter was taken during the changeover process.

The billing software for the new radio-read water meters came online at the end of September. In the months leading up to this, utility customers were billed monthly based on an estimate calculated on their previous 12 month’s water usage. Now that the software is operational, customers are now being billed through the new meters, which provide actual monthly reads.

In the current utility bill, customers are being charged for the full water consumption on the new meters from the time of installation. Residents will also notice credits received for the estimated readings – based on the old meters – from the changeover date to the end of August, when the new utility billing software came online. Customers will not receive credit for water usage between the City’s read in April and the ďŹ nal read taken when the manual-read meter was removed.

The City of Lacombe thanks those aected for their patience and understanding during this transition period, and would like to assure everyone that moving forward their utility bills will reect their actual monthly water usage. Please note that residents who have not yet received the new radio-read meters will continue to receive alternating estimated and actual meter readings on their monthly statements.

Enhanced Checkstop Program aims to keep impaired drivers off the road In recent weeks, the members of the Lacombe Police Service (LPS), together with their counterparts at the Alberta Sheri ’s Department and the RCMP have been conducting roadside check stops at various locations in Lacombe as part of the Enhanced Alberta Check Stop Program.

Reminders Snow Removal Enforcement Services would like to remind residents that snow removal on streets will begin in the upcoming weeks.

The City will be placing no parking signs on streets slated for plowing at least 12 hours in advance. Pursuant to the TraďŹƒc Bylaw (223.312.2), any vehicles not moved before snowplows come through may be towed at the owner’s expense.

During these check stops law enforcement oďŹƒcers are speciďŹ cally dedicated to removing impaired drivers from Alberta roads.

LPS is actively involved in this program, and is committed to conducting at least six check stops in Lacombe before the end of the year. To date they have conducted three check stops: September 26; October 9; and October 12, which resulted in: • A total of 2700 vehicles being stopped and checked. • Three drivers were arrested and charged with impaired driving. • One driver was arrested and charged with Impaired Driving, and for refusal to provide a breath sample. • Seven vehicles were seized as per the Alberta Immediate Roadside Sanctions. • Four drivers were issued roadside 24-hour driving suspensions. • One driver was arrested on an outstanding warrant. • A seizure was made under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

• And approximately 68 other tickets or warnings were issued to drivers.

LPS will continue to participate in this province-wide operation, with further check stops scheduled for November and December.

The police service would like to thank representatives from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), as well as LPS civilian sta who volunteered at the check stops to hand out information and talk to drivers about the perils of impaired driving.

Bert de Bruijn decodes Revelation with new book

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express A Lacombe man is encouraging Christians (and anyone else so inclined) to make a closer inspection of the Bible with his new book.

Bert de Bruijn, a now semi-retired minister, has recently published his first book, Take Another Look at Revelations, a study that analyzes the many symbols and metaphors existing in the Book of Revelation. de Bruijn said that he felt his book was important because it simplified the complex messages within Revelation.

“Lots of people have interpreted Revelation and I was never very convinced that people were getting the message,” said de Bruijn. de Bruijn went on to say that it is difficult to interpret Revelation because its story is told as it was revealed in a vision to the apostle John, as a sequence of images. Much of Revelation is symbolic and deals heavily with the spiritual element. de Bruijn said some interpretations make the mistake of taking too much of the scripture literally.

On the other hand, one can also make the mistake of thinking the scripture does not relate to the real world at all.

“Just because it is all symbolic doesn’t mean it has nothing to do with real life,” said de Bruijn. “Rather the opposite. It has everything to do with real life, but the images are given as a metaphor.”

He gave the example of one scene within Revelation that deals with the return of Christ where he is shown to come leading an army of the Christians who have gone before coming down from heaven on horseback.

He said that according to the Christian tradition, it is true that Christ will return, but the manner of that return may not be exactly as described in that imagery.

“Well, the reality of that is absolutely true. But I doubt very much that we will see horses coming out of the sky.”

Revelation is perhaps best known to the public at large as being the final book of the Bible, which describes the second coming of Christ and the end of the world. However, de Bruijn said very little of the book actually deals with

the end times and most of it deals with things that are always happening, what is generally referred to as ‘the eternal present.’

Numbers are one thing that he said are incredibly important in the book of Revelation.

He said that certain numbers refer to certain things, something he discovered is consistent throughout Revelation.

“It became obvious that these numbers were important, so I started to list them.”

For example, he discovered the number four always refers to the whole earth, the number three to a person’s allegiance of worship, seven refers to Jesus or God, six to Satan, said de Bruijn.

He said Revelation uses specific numbers of repetitions to refer to different things. For example, if a passage uses repetition to describe something seven different ways, that passage is referring to Jesus or God. He said this is done so the reader always knows, even if it isn’t spelled out, what the passage is referring to.

“The numbers give you clues to what is actually meant.”

He went on to say that some have even misinterpreted scenes in Revelation that relate to daily life within the church as scenes describing events that still have yet to take place.

He added that it became quite clear in his study that this is not the case. de Bruijn first got the idea to write the book when he was asked to do a Bible study on Revelation in the late 90s.

In preparation for the study, he noticed there are many references that were consistent throughout the book.

As the study progressed, these references became even more clear to him.

After the study, he completed the first draft of his book in 2001 and then the project remained more or less untouched until de Bruijn came to Lacombe in 2006.

He then acquired a printing contract and worked on tweaking and rewriting his draft until recently. de Bruijn will be doing a reading and signing for his new book, Take Another Look at Revelation, at the Kozy Korner on Oct. 25th at 1:30 p.m. news@lacombeexpress.com

Red meats, depending on the cuts, are the toughest and are better to marinate from one hour up to 24 hours. Chicken and pork proteins are much more delicate and are more preferably marinated for no longer than four to six hours. Over marinated chicken will start to become tough.

Bentley Generals win high-scoring game in Lacombe

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The Bentley Generals started their regular season this past weekend with games against Okotoks and Stony Plain, coming away victorious in both.

On Oct. 19th, the Gens played the Stony Plain Eagles in Lacombe and defeated them 8-4.

Coach Ryan Tobler said the wins mean the Generals have started the season on the right foot, but they still have a long road to go if they are going to reclaim the Allan Cup. “We’re disappointed with the way that it went last year,” said Tobler. “We reloaded a bit. We’ve come with a new sense of hunger

and determination and we’re trying to get that cup back. We’ve had a good start to the season but it’s not how you start it’s how you finish.”

For the first half of the game on Sunday, the teams seemed evenly matched. Brett Robertson of the Generals opened scoring for the game and the Gens and Eagles would spend the remainder of the period trading goals back and forth.

At the end of 20 minutes, the score was 3-2 in favour of Bentley.

The second period looked like it would play out much the same when Bentley lost their lead less than two minutes in. Things changed about three minutes in though when General Kyle Bai-

ley got a lucky break scoring an unassisted shorthanded goal that was kicked in by Eagles goalie Jeremy Balyk. In the same minute, Bailey would score again, this time assisted by Curtis Armstrong, giving the Generals a twopoint lead.

Bentley used the remainder of the period to build off that momentum, scoring twice more before the buzzer.

A fourth Eagles goal at about halfway through the period led to the Generals switching goalie Travis Yonkman for Dustin Butier. Tobler said he stands by the decision to swap goalies, but added Yonkman could have had more help from his teammates in that game.

Butier would play the remainder of the game without missing a save. The Generals would head into the final period 7-4.

In the third, Stony Plain came out much harder than they had all game. More time was spent in the Generals’ defensive end than the previous two periods and while the Generals did not allow for any goals by the Eagles, it seemed they had a harder time getting the puck out of their end.

However, the Generals still managed one more goal to finish the game with an impressive 8-4 lead. Tobler said back-to-back games early in the season mean the Generals aren’t as conditioned as they would like to be yet and fatigue may have been a bit of

Tobler also said the Eagles have made a few changes to their roster and had new speed and talent to showcase to the Generals.

Last season, one of the Generals’ strengths was team chemistry. Tobler said there seems to be a similar trend from this year’s team, of which there is a core group of veteran players.

Tobler said that there is a lot of season left to improve on their weaker areas of play and through hard work in practice and taking care of themselves off the ice, the players should be able to make something of it.

“Hopefully it translates to success.”

Cross country championships a big success

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Lacombe was host to the Canadian Western Alberta Junior High Athletic Association (CWAJHAA) Cross Country Championship last week.

The event was well attended with a number of supporting parents and students to cheer on the hundreds of junior high racers who were competing. The race consisted of students from Grades 6 - 9, with two levels of courses that were run at the Canadian University College campus.

“Just in general, it’s great to see junior high kids coming together for a big event like that. There were many stories of kids that had definitely improved running times on the big stage and were able to put a really good race together,” said Lacombe Junior High Coach Rory Whitbread.

The racers were divided by grade and gender for a total of eight races that day.

Whitbread said all four of the Lacombe schools that took part had a successful day overall, with great reviews from students, staff and parents who attended the event.

Whitbread said the Lacombe Christian School usually has a great running club, and this year was no exception. Father

Lacombe and Terrace Ridge schools only had a select few students participate in the event, but Whitbread reported that all attendees enjoyed themselves and their chance to participate.

He was quite proud of the students from Lacombe Junior High and was happy to note that there was a number of top 10 finishes from his team.

“We had several top 10 finishes which we were very excited about. We had a fourth place finish, I think three different sixth place finishes and a number of other top 10 finishes as well. To be able to host the event in our hometown, not far from the school, at a place where we got to practice made for a great day,” said Whitbread.

After the event, Whitbread asked some of the other coaches to tell him about how they felt the day went. Brian Johnson from Hunting Hills High School in Red Deer said that the entire event was “Very well organized and an excellent course for the runners. All of the little details in the event turned kids onto cross country running and honoured a great sport.”

Other coaches had similar praise including Cecilia Tarnasky of Caroline School who said that her runners very much enjoyed their first experience at a CWAJHAA event, due to the level of organization and effort put forth into plan-

ning the event.

“I should say thank you to the many local businesses who stepped up to contribute and help us out with the event. I want to thank everyone who came out to watch.

It’s fairly likely that we will be hosting the event again next year, so we would like to make it bigger and better than ever. Also, a big thanks to CUC for allowing us to use their campus – they were a fantastic help to us,” said Whitbread.

Something else that made the run meaningful for Whitbread was the fact that many of the trails designed by the late Bill Nielsen were utilized during the event. Nielsen was an avid runner and put a great deal of effort into providing Lacombe with prime running trails.

“I know it would have made Bill Nielsen very proud to have all those kids running on his trails that day,” said Whitbread. He added that many people were thinking about Nielsen on the day of event and that there were many comments about the beauty and functionality of the course from other coaches.

Rams winless in regular season, look forward to playoffs

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The Lacombe Rams ended their regular season at home on Oct. 17th with a 30-7 loss against the Lindsay Thurber Raiders, bringing their record to 6-0 heading into the playoffs.

Coach Riley Quance said the lack of wins for the Rams isn’t for lack of effort.

In fact, he admitted that coaching staff had a share in the blame for the difficult season.

“I would think that this year the coaches, myself in particular, have to take responsibility for a lot of where we are,” said Quance.

“We’ve struggled with

trying to identify who we are and what we do well.

We’ve tried some different things and they haven’t always worked.”

Like the rest of Lacombe’s football teams this year, the Rams had a lot of turnover on their roster this season. Quance said trying to find where players fit in the transition and system changes was a bit of a challenge for coaching staff.

“We had a huge graduating class, so kids had to take on different roles this year,” said Quance.

“Plus we had a bunch of new players that were able to come in from the Bantam program and were able to start up into starting

roles,” he added.

While the new players have talent and stepped up to the challenge of playing at a higher level, Quance said it has still been a struggle for coaches and players to find where they fit best and how best to make them work as a team.

As for how the players have actually performed, Quance said he is happy despite the record.

“I’m proud of the way the kids have played,” said Quance. “They have worked hard and done everything we have asked them to do.”

through the second quarter meant the Rams were shuffling players around, which meant the flow of the Rams’ offence was impacted.

While the Rams were unable to execute a consistent offensive game throughout the entire game on Friday, they were still in the game until the second half.

Quance said this shows that the Rams certainly have the potential to compete with the other teams in the league.

“If we execute well, we can play with the teams in this league,” said Quance.

He added the Rams have faced stiff competition from their Red Deer opponents all season.

“The Red Deer teams are

definitely solid this year,” said Quance.

“There’s not a lot of weakness in any of the three programs.”

As most of the season has been spent by the Rams trying to figure out how best they work together, Quance said they have been improving with each game and are now getting to a point where they could possibly gain momentum.

“Right now we feel confident that we’ve figured out what our best looks are, what our best formations are and our best personnel assignments,” said Quance.

Even though they head into playoffs this weekend without a win yet, Quance said he is hopeful.

“We’re looking forward to putting on a good performance (Friday),” said Quance.

He went on to say that the format of playoffs gives the Rams an opportunity to still come back this season.

“If we play our best ball, we can be that dark horse for sure.”

In any case, the team will be well set for next season, he said.

Quance said that this year’s graduating class is much smaller meaning fewer players will be lost and many of the newcomers have stepped into starting roles meaning they will be ready to go at the start of the season next fall. news@lacombeexpress.com

It’s satisfying to have a ‘show home perfect’ house but that house can’t snuggle with you at night or look up at you with big brown eyes asking for a scratch on the head.

The fact that chew toys adorn my New Zealand wool area carpet daily is just a fun game between me and my pup and his muddy footprints on my LVT plank floor really just make me smile as he

trots around our home.

There is such joy in having a pet and they truly make a house into a home.

So me and my buddy are a team and will continue to search for dog-friendly property in our fair city. I am content in my little rental house but still want to search for a property to call my own. I am grateful that my landlords were willing to take someone with a dog and I know that many properties are not pet friendly because somewhere along the way someone has abused the privilege.

There are many responsible pet owners and it’s sad that so many places in Central Alberta are not pet friendly.

When you search out other communities in Alberta or B.C.

you will find that many communities embrace pets and allow for people to bring their pets out into public.

When I was in Vegas having lunch with a friend, the ladies at the table next to us had two strollers pushed up to their table. The strollers did not contain babies but small white princess pups who were along for the ladies’ lunches! That is a dog friendly restaurant for real!

To all pet lovers, I salute you!

It takes a heart full of love and a lifetime of patience to open up our homes and sacrifice some of our fancier things to have a furry friend as a roommate.
