Hospital Foundation provides funding for equipment and services at NRGH, Oceanside Health Centre, Dufferin Place Extended Care Facility (Nanaimo), Trillium Lodge (Parksville), and Eagle

Greetings from the Foundation!

First and foremost, thank you for your continued support. By donating, participating in our events, volunteering, and hosting fundraisers you make progressive healthcare possible for each person on Central Vancouver Island. It cannot be said enough, thank you.

In April of 2014 we formally announced our newest Campaign. Together with our donors, we aspire to raise $1.5 million to equip two new Operating Rooms in the Surgical Suites at NRGH. This is 50% of the total cost; the balance will be shared by the provincial government ($900,000) and the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District ($600,000). This addition will make a significant difference to patients undergoing surgery at NRGH. Yet, that’s not all. We have also begun to lay plans to support enhanced Cardiology Services at NRGH, and are in the early stages of developing a funding plan for potential redevelopment of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Imagine! Increased Operating Rooms, enhanced Cardiology Services and the potential for ICU redevelopment – these additions will expand medical options substantially. What a difference it will make to each of us.

Each year the Board of Directors establishes a set of goals to advance healthcare opportunities. These goals are determined through donor feedback, ethical standardization, and the experiential knowledge of each Foundation team member.

At the start of 2014 we coordinated a “stakeholder survey” to evaluate and design our directives. As a result, we established short and long term goals to guide the Foundation through to 2019.

The Foundation has appeared on the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy’s (AHP) “Top 16” list for not-for-profit, healthcare fundraising organizations for 4 consecutive years, but last year we graduated to “Top 12”. AHP “Top” organizations are recognized for operations efficiency, employee performance and retention, and fundraising effectiveness.

Respect for all donors ensures that we also maintain a “commitment to efficiency” which is ingrained by strong leadership, strategic planning for the short and long term, and flexibility during economic uncertainty. Every November doctors, nurses, technicians, spouses of medical professionals get groovy with their grooming in order to raise awareness and funds for local diagnostic and treatment equipment at NRGH related to men’s health.

Join the “growing movement” Celebrating its 11th year this past May, the Run for Life attracted 213 participants, and 50 each November; get started by volunteers from our Financial Institution partners. More than $37,000 was raised for the Operating calling 250-755-7690 or email Rooms Campaign; this was the largest amount raised to date. Also gaining in popularity are our info@nanaimohospitalfoundation.com Learn for Life lecture series held each spring in Nanaimo and Oceanside. Nanaimo Lifeline also oversees 174 clients in Powell River, bringing the client total to 1,670 as of June 2014.

“The number of clients in the Oceanside area has held relatively steady during 201314, although the Nanaimo area had a slight downturn in client numbers. This was partially due to one facility introducing its own call buttons and opting for the “inhouse” system. Also, there were fewer new installations in 2013-14 compared to the previous five years. This is the first year with a downturn in client numbers since beginning in 1987.

If you would like to help someone with limited resources afford Lifeline, you can do so by donating to the Silent Guardian Fund.

New to Nanaimo Lifeline in the last year is “Project Lifesaver”. Project Lifesaver is an international support system wherein users who are prone to wander from home wear a transmitter bracelet that can be tracked by Search and Rescue teams. Clients may have Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, autism, Down Syndrome, developmental disorders, or brain injury. On average, clients who become lost are found within 30 minutes. Nanaimo Lifeline has partnered with Arrowsmith Search & Rescue and Nanaimo Search & Rescue to benefit Central Island communities. The heart of NRGH, Code Brew staff, distributes refreshments to staff, patients, and visitors each day. In July 2014 Code Brew celebrated its 14th anniversary as an essential part of the Foundation family.

Established in 2000, Code Brew was a model that broke custom as not-for-profit organizations did not traditionally own and operate revenue generating businesses.

However, it was the second business the Foundation owned, Nanaimo Lifeline was the first.

Since it opened for business Code Brew has continually evolved to meet the needs of changing demographics. It has been a platform from which young people could gain experience, and a venue where volunteers could give back.

In the last fiscal year 16 part-time and full-time employees ensured the kiosk ran smoothly. The majority of these employees are high school or university students in their first jobs. Enhancing service and fundraising capacity, Code Brew is also helped by 14 volunteers. The coffee kiosk is open 6:30am to 8:30pm daily every day of the year (some holidays have shorter hours). All proceeds are reinvested into healthcare on Central Island.

As a Foundation we try to present appealing and purposeful ways to engage donors in fundraising activities. Our events have grown and evolved over the years thanks to your trust and the healthcare vision we share. Last year, on its 20th anniversary, the Golf for Life hosted a sellout with 144 golfers and raised almost $100,000 for equipment at NRGH. The 2014 Lotto for Life rang in its 21st year. However, ticket sales dipped slightly and only 4,350 of 5,000 sold.

The Lotto revamped its approach and held a single Grand Prize Draw, rather than both an Early Bird and a Final Draw. Despite lower ticket sales, $435,000 was raised; 100 prizes were awarded with a trend towards more cash prizes.
