Our Report gains Momentum

CITY EDITOR The Red Deer Advocate is proud to introduce its 14th edition of what to date has been called Report on Central Alberta.

The publication has evolved with a new name Momentum; and a new magazine-style format.

The name Momentum captures the force and energy of Central Albertans moving into the world.

The 2014 edition celebrates men and women who have done the Red Deer area proud as they succeeded on the national and/or international stage.

Some of the people whose photographs and stories we share will be household names. Others who have claimed international attention may surprise you. One notable duo hails from the animal kingdom The range of successes spans the globe and even extends into space. The people we feature

Carolyn Martindale come from a wide sphere including broadcasting, the movies, the music industry, the space program, the Olympics, search and rescue, and the air force.

Some of those featured continue to call the Central Alberta area home. For others following

their dreams has taken them elsewhere. Many share fond memories of the place and the people that gave them their start.

In some cases the people featured have earned their accomplishments in one field. A few have earned notoriety in more than one area.

The new magazine-style format of Momentum allows readers to pull it out, read it at leisure, and save it as a souvenir of pride in some extraordinary people who hail from Central Albertan .

Momentum will be distributed with our Friday Forward publication to all Red Deer households on Friday, June 20. It will also be delivered to the Red Deer Advocate’s rural subscribers that same day.

Ron MacLean: Broadcaster

From a seat on the bus, to the face of Canadian sports

Ron MacLean remembers riding on the bus to Red Deer Rustlers hockey games 33 years ago through snow storms on Hwy 2, wondering just how many people would actually hear his broadcast that night.

It didn’t take long before he became the voice of sports in Canada.

Best known for his role as Don Cherry’s straight man on Coach’s Corner, MacLean has spent the last 27 years hosting Hockey Night in Canada, Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, track and field world championships, the Queen’s Plate and the Calgary Stampede. Now the 54-year-old is set for a fresh start as the host of Rogers’ new Sunday night hockey broadcast, which will take him coast-to-coast in a whole new way.

Heady stuff for a Red Deer kid who at one point was just hoping to stretch his $600-a-month pay cheque while still living at his parent’s home.

“It was always in my mind that ‘Gee, I hope the homes and farms I am driving past will be able to pick up the signal,’” said MacLean, who was part of the Rustlers broadcast team with Frank Ryan.

“Then you end up at CBC where the reach is 99 per cent saturation and that was a nice feeling for all of us. It was just encouraging to know your work is either read or viewed.”

MacLean was an army brat growing up, and was born in Zweibrücken, Germany, in 1960, but lived in France while his dad

was serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

After stops in Chester, N.S., and Whitehorse, YT, the MacLeans settled in Red Deer in 1971 as his father retired from the military and took a job with the RCMP. Ron thrived in the city and it’s minor hockey system under the tutelage of coaches like Rob and Gord Hamill and Dave Manning, referees Earl Chadwick and Stu Hitman and teachers like Ed Shields and Eileen Atkinson at St. Thomas Aquinas Middle School and École Camille J. Lerouge.

He broke into broadcasting with CKRDFM in 1978, filling a number of roles with the radio station and RDTV, where he was groomed by guys like Wayne Barry and Danny Teed and Ray McBeth and Doug Fix. It was while he was ad-libbing a weather forecast in 1984 that he was noticed by a producer at CFAC in Calgary. MacLean was hired to host Calgary Flames telecasts and then became the sports anchor for the evening news.

In 1986, he was hired by CBC to host Toronto Maple Leaf telecasts on HNIC and the following year he became the national host and joined Cherry on Coach’s Corner.

Since then MacLean has covered just about every sport in the Canadian lexicon, earning 10 Gemini Awards and became a best selling author with his autobiography Cornered, co-authored by Kirstie McLellan Day.

APPROACHING ATHLETES AND STARS AS JUST ONE OF US Most importantly, he became arguably the most recognizable name, face and voice in Canadian broadcasting, finding a way to each week humanize hockey, to make it something every Canadian could relate to.

“I prefer to try to use experiences like my refereeing past or playing and all of the people I encounter outside of the inner-circle (of hockey), that’s my favourite way to prep,” said MacLean, who now lives in Oakville, Ont., with his wife, Cari MacLean.

There are two sports events that stick out in his mind.

He remembers covering his first-ever playoff game with CBC as the St. Louis Blues hosted the Maple Leafs at the old Checkerdome in 1987 and being amazed by the ferocity and the pace they played.

“It was mind boggling,” said MacLean. “I remember thinking at that moment, ‘My god, these guys are going to try to do this for the next nine weeks.’”

The other big memory goes to the root of how he works.

It was at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games. He was poolside at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center watching Marianne Limpert earn silver in the women’s 200-metre individual medley.

He barely knew the Fredericton, N.B., swimmer, but he felt a connection with her as an only child and was brought to tears watching her chase down Britain’s Michelle Smith over the final 25 metres.

One year later, Smith was caught doping, though she never was stripped of her gold medal.

For him, it spoke to the core of the Olympics and sport.

“That sensation at the Olympics is ‘Hey, that person is one of us, that’s our neighbour,’” he said.

This played a major role in his coverage of the Sochi Olympics, to the point where CBC did not show the medal standings once during their prime time show. Instead of saying Canada is better than this country or that country, he emphasized just Canada being great on its own.

“I support the idea that a Canadian is more of a beacon and more interested in a global view than to be so nationalistic as to start comparing for the purposes to say ‘We’re better,’” he said.

For a man who has covered everything in sport, there is something he one day would like the opportunity to cover, and that’s politics. He became enamoured with the idea in 1984 while in his Eastview Red Deer home watching Peter Mansbridge and David Halton cover the federal PC leadership convention, eventually won by Brian Mulroney.

“It was a moment where I saw two guys discuss a situation in Canada politically that I thought was magic,” said MacLean. “It’s long gone for me, because I have spent 30 years holed up in the sports department . . . but I would love something with that kind of meat on the bone.”

Come next hockey season, however, he will have a new assignment. As part of Rogers’ takeover of hockey broadcasting in Canada, MacLean will go coast-to-coast, spending each Sunday in a different community for that night’s broadcast. While there

The curving lines of buildings that seem to rise out of the earth create the hallmark of Douglas Cardinal’s designs. Cardinal continues to work out of his home.

Born into a blended world view

ADVOCATE STAFF It has taken the world 50 years to begin to catch up to Red Deer’s Douglas Cardinal, and it still has a ways to go.

Cardinal is arguably Canada’s most polarizing architect. Critics are often put off by his outside-thebox thinking, his willingness to go to court to defend his work and are quick to dismiss him and call him arrogant. His fans view him as innovative and progressive.

The man who designed Red Deer’s iconic St. Mary’s Church has always done things his way.

The 80-year-old is an artist and social activist who has stayed true to himself, even when that self wasn’t always a clear picture.

“Buildings are like footprints in the sand, they say where you’ve been,” he said.

“If I’ve contributed anything it would be that by doing things out of love and respect for people and love and respect for life all around us is the way we should conduct our lives, because if we don’t we don’t have a future on this planet.”

Douglas, the oldest of eight children, was born in Calgary in 1934 to Joseph and Frances Cardinal. He spent the first six years of his life in the Crowsnest Pass area. In 1940, his father was transferred to Red

Deer, where they settled.

Joseph — whose father was Algonquian and mother Blackfoot — was a game warden and instilled in his oldest son the value of nature and respect for all life.

Frances, whose family had immigrated from Germany, was a nurse and impressed upon him the importance of culture, art and education.

Both played a huge role in the man he became and the philosophies he injects into his work.

“I got two totally different world views, but they came together in loving and caring,” he said.

A REVOLUTION AGAINST A CITY OF BOXES “I saw the great contribution of both cultures, but particularly I saw the great contribution of the First Nations culture because it was much more grounded, much more rooted and much more realistic and much more natural.”

While growing up in Red Deer he attended St. Joseph’s Convent, where his passion for art was cultivated, and later Red Deer Comprehensive High School.

“Beautiful architecture was like frozen music, like the cathedrals built throughout history and the beautiful art of the church,” said Cardinal.

With encouragement from his mother, he dove into architecture, but early on he faced the rejection of the establishment.

In a speech delivered at Red Deer’s 65th anniversary in 1978, Cardinal said he was told by the University of British Columbia’s department director that he was “foolish to ever believe that I could be an architect, that I did not think like an architect, and furthermore I did not have the family background necessary to be a member of the Royal Canadian Architectural profession.”

That dismissal sent him on a soul-searching mission.

He travelled to Mexico and found a culture that

had evolved from the environment and a style of architecture that was in tune with its surroundings.

He headed back to school and flourished at the University of Texas in Austin.

While there he also became immersed in the civil rights movement, particularly through student government and rallies. He remains socially active, having supported numerous causes over the years including First Nations education and now, especially, the environment.

When Cardinal graduated, he felt a desire to return and give back to his home town, and was hired on at the firm Bissell and Holman. One of his first projects was Fairview Elementary School — famously noted because of its original teepee-inspired skylights.

While there, he became a fully accredited member of the Alberta Association of Architects and a member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. In 1964 he put up his own shingle and opened Douglas Cardinal Architect Inc. His first project became his most important.

St. Mary’s Church in Red Deer was a project unlike any other in Canadian history, to that point.

Instead of a traditional gothic-styled Catholic church, with the help of Father Werner Merx, Cardi-

nal designed a structure that was all about spiritual function. Its nature-inspired curves were a departure from anything the church had seen before.

Its circular concrete roof was cutting edge and became the first building to take advantage of computers to help design it. A Chicago company was contracted for that task. The computer they used was the size of a building and operated off a punch card operating system that was able to handle the job in a matter of hours.

“It was quite the structural challenge where we had 81,000 simultaneous equations to be resolved for the roof. Mathematically, it would have taken seven men 100 years to work out the calculations . . .” said Cardinal. “I realized, in terms of straight analysis, computers can do millions of calculations a second, but people can’t.”

The church opened on Dec. 8, 1968, and is still one of his favourite projects.

St. Mary’s launched him into the architectural stratosphere. He won many awards and accolades for the project, but the design was considered so radical that he had to move his practice to Edmonton to drum up more work.

He continued to flourish professionally in the province’s capital, landing numerous government projects. Yet he had a constant reminder how regimented and ugly “modern architecture” was every time he looked out his window.

“In all of the things that people have done throughout the ages, in the history of architecture and building, we have never created such ugliness as in the 20th century and 21st century,” said Cardinal.

His mission to design buildings that were inspired by the world around them — and from the inside out — was constantly panned by critics who decried the buildings to be too expensive and unrealistic in their form. He pressed on.

Cardinal hit the mainstream in 1983 when his design was selected from more than 80 others for the Canadian Museum of Man. The name was then changed to the Canadian Museum of Civilization and is now the Canadian Museum of History. He moved his firm to Ottawa, where he remains, so that he could broaden his contacts and be closer to the museum while it was constructed.

He hasn’t slowed down. In fact, he is busier now than ever.

“I will probably live to over 100, I’ve got too much to do.”

His early push with technology never let up.

In 1983 he made more history when St. Albert Place opened, the first time a computer was used for 100 per cent of the design process.

His practice has since become the first computeronly architectural firm in the world. He has helped advance the software to the point where everything is done in 3-D and he can have control over the tiniest detail.

ADVOCATE STAFF Willie Littlechild’s life has been marked by some significant firsts and a whole heap of laurels.

But before he could accomplish anything, Jacob Wilton Littlechild, now 70, had to endure what many thousands of First Nations children in Canada had to — residential school.

Born on the Ermineskin Cree Nation near Maskwaciz (then called Hobbema) on April 1, 1944, Littlechild was raised by grandparents who passed down traditional Cree teachings and language to the boy.

Still a child, he was dropped off at the local residential school by a team of horses.

There he struggled to understand the English that was the mandated language.

Over 14 years at the Ermineskin Indian Residential School, Littlechild was subjected to physical, sexual and spiritual abuse, where every effort was made to “take the Indian out of the child.”

But Littlechild would survive, something he chalks up largely to his involvement in the school’s hockey and baseball programs.

Escaping idle moments with hours and hours on the outdoor rink at school paid off when he went to the University of Alberta and played with the Golden Bears hockey team. He was also on the diving squad, and served as basketball and football student manager while completing his physical education degree.

AFTER THE TRUTH, THE RECONCILIATION In the years that followed his 1967 graduation, Littlechild would work to get more young aboriginals involved in sport. He organized Alberta’s first Indigenous Games in 1971, coached an all-aboriginal hockey team, and played professional baseball in Canada and Jamaica.

Shortly after, it was back to school, and in 1976, he did what no Treaty Indian in Alberta had done before — graduate with a law degree. His home community recognized his achievement by naming Littlechild honorary chief of the tribe, the first such honour given in 100 years.

For decades, Littlechild has operated his own law practice on the Ermineskin reserve, but he has travelled far and wide as well to advocate for the aboriginal cause. He was part of a lawsuit to the British High Court that called for the entrenching of aboriginal and treaty rights in the Canadian Constitution in the early 1980s. He has attended more than 100 international meetings in dozens of countries since the late ’70s as part of United Nations efforts.

On the national stage, Littlechild became a Progressive Conservative MP after winning the riding of Wetaskiwin in the 1988 election. In many places, Littlechild is referred to as the first Treaty Indian to be elected to Parliament, though B.C. Okanagan Indian Len Marchand, elected in 1968, is considered the first Status Indian MP. Regardless, Littlechild is one of only 32 First Nations, Métis or Inuit Parliamentarians in Canadian history.

His time in Ottawa was fraught with challenges.

Constituents railed against and filed an unsuccessful lawsuit relating to his stand on the introduction of the GST. There were protests by members of his home community who wanted a stronger stand on aboriginal rights during the Oka Crisis of 1990. One community member even confronted him on his front lawn in Maskwacis one day to issue him a death threat.

Littlechild cited a desire to spend more time at home with his young family of three children as a reason to not run again in 1993 election that left the federal PCs decimated. He attempted a return to politics in 2005, but lost the Conservative nomination race for Wetaskiwin to Blaine Calkins.

Instead, in 2006, he ran for and won the position of regional vice-chief for Alberta within the AFN. That role lasted three years.

Littlechild stepped down in 2009 when he was named one of three commissioners for the national Truth and Reconciliation Commission. One fellow Maskwacis chief called Littlechild “arguably the most brilliant Indigenous man of our time” when that announcement was made.

Through his experience criss-crossing Canada to hear personal stories of residential school survivors, Littlechild was shocked by the depth of abuse experienced. If the forums for recollections over the last five years have allowed for the “truth” to be told, Lit-

tlechild knows the reconciliation piece is a far larger challenge. It is something he has been working on himself for the better part of four decades.

“My hope is that we will be able to restore respectful relationships among each other — both among ourselves in our own community first of all, and then with the non-indigenous neighbours and indeed the rest of the country,” he said after the final national event in Edmonton in March.

Through his work, Littlechild has met with national presidents and indigenous advocates from every inhabited continent. In May, he was at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York, a body he helped to establish.

In 2006, Littlechild organized an expert United Nations seminar in what was then called Hobbema (now renamed Maskwaciz) to discuss treaty issues, the first time such an event was held outside the UN buildings in New York or Geneva, Switzerland.

That work helped lead to the UN’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, an instrument that provides nation states with a standard for the treatment of aboriginal peoples around the world.

The list of other organizations Littlechild has had a hand in forming is too long to list. But it is clear that Littlechild still sees sport as a crucial avenue that can embolden and give purpose to aboriginal youth.

He co-founded the North American Indigenous Games, first held in Edmonton in 1990, and has long aspired to form a worldwide indigenous sporting competition (one planned for Winnipeg in 2012 was ultimately cancelled). Littlechild remains physically active, winning medals and setting records in swimming at the Canada Senior Games.

ADVOCATE STAFF It’s an image seen a million times over.

A spindly arm, like a giant flexible drinking straw, stretches out from the Space Shuttle into the blackness of space.

And in photo after photo, the word “Canada” embellished with a tiny Maple Leaf can be seen on the arm’s lean biceps.

“It’s iconic,” says Garry Lindberg, 73, the man who led the team that developed the Canadarm in the late 1970s.

“It’s become a hallmark of Canadian engineering excellence.”

Today, with youngsters raised on a visual diet of astonishing technological feats in movies or in video games, the so-called Canadarm may look, well, a little pedestrian.

More lawn mower than light sabre.

But that is to misunderstand the arm’s impact, when it first reached out in 1981.

And it’s still a big deal.

Lindberg, a farm boy from the Hoadley area about 30 km north of Rimbey, was the project manager on the Canadarm.

A precocious student, he graduated from Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in Red Deer at 15. Lindberg went on to the University of Alberta, and then on to Britain’s Cambridge University, where he graduated in 1964 with a doctorate in engineering mechanics.

That trajectory landed him in Ottawa, where he joined the National Research Council in 1964. He started out doing research, among other tasks, in analyzing the effects of intense noise on structures, an increasing concern in the advancing jet age.

He was then picked for Canadarm.

The task of developing the arm, which became an indispensable piece of equipment on every Shuttle flight, was exceedingly complex.

A piece of machinery was required that was extremely lightweight, yet immensely strong and stiff; able to withstand incredible heat, but also intense cold; and its myriad of parts had to move smoothly without lubricating oil, which would just bubble and drift about, coating optics and other parts.

What they came up with was a 15-metre arm that weighed less than 480 kg, yet could lift more than 30,000 kg –– up to 266,000 kg in the weightlessness of space. For all that, it used less power than an average electric kettle.

If designing wasn’t challenge enough, Canadarm could not be tested like normal machinery.

“Because we had to design it to be very light we couldn’t test it in three dimensions here on Earth because it couldn’t support itself,” Lindberg says. A rig was set up to move it horizontally but it couldn’t be raised and lowered.

“The first time the arm moved in three dimensions was on its first test flight.”

The first time Canadarm was deployed in space on Nov. 13, 1981, the Shuttle was out of communications range.

That left Lindberg, who was a guest commentator on the CBC that day, and the rest of the Canadarm program anxiously waiting for the Shuttle to make contact again before they could see whether the arm had done its job as hoped. A camera never left Lindberg’s face to ensure his reaction was not missed.

In a history-making moment, word came that the arm had performed perfectly.

“Okay, the arm is out for the first time . . . working great . . . it’s a remarkable flying machine and it’s doing exactly as we hoped and expected,” is how pilot Richard Truly of Mission STS-2 put it at the time.

Lindberg summed up his subsequent facial expression as “significant elation.”

The Canadarm has been an integral part of every Shuttle space mission since. Canadarm 2 took the technology a step further and is a permanent part of the International Space Station.

Canada’s troubadour astronaut Chris Hadfield had the honours bolting the arm to the station and operating it for the first time in April 2001 during the first spacewalk by a Canadian astronaut.

Lindberg, who had left the Canadarm team in 1979, said it was a career highlight and he remained

in aerospace for the rest of his career.

He became what was then called director of the National Aeronautical Establishment, in their space division in 1986. When the Canadian Space Agency was created in 1989 he became vice-president.

He led the restructuring team for the agency in 1995 before retiring in 1997 in Ottawa, where he lives with his wife, Daryl. His two sons and their families with four grandchildren also live in the area.

Lindberg believes Canada still holds a valued position in the international space community.

“Canada is still very highly regarded. We are a very valuable partner. We don’t make huge contributions; we don’t have the budget. But we often make very vital contributions and very key contributions.

And we have a reputation still of more than holding our end of any bargain or any agreement.”

He took most of his high school-age schooling in Bluffton, but then came to Red Deer where he lived in a school residence while completing Grade 12.

That year was an important one, he says.

“Doing Grade 12 in Red Deer was a very useful and fortuitous stepping stone to university.”

He was last in Alberta in 2012 when the University of Alberta bestowed an honorary doctorate upon him for his work.

Planting seeds for future success

ADVOCATE BUSINESS EDITOR With stamps from Qatar to Korea and Ireland to India, Cal Dallas’s passport would impress the most seasoned of globetrotters. Even more impressive is the fact the MLA for Red Deer South logged most of his travel miles during the past 2 ½ years — following his appointment as Alberta’s minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations.

Dallas acknowledged that he’s become pretty adept at living out of a suitcase.

“I think about the entire trip and what my requirements are, and I methodically pack, which is something that I never would have done before.”

Sometimes, he even prepares luggage for more than one trip in anticipation of a quick turnaround between missions.

But Dallas has learned more than how to maintain a respectable wardrobe while on the road. His time abroad has honed his skills as an ambassador for Alberta, whether shaking hands with entrepreneurs or government leaders.

“I think my personal anxiety level has lowered a little bit over time as I’ve done more and more of these,” he said. “I think back to the first mission that I did as a minister into the Middle East — I’ll admit to being somewhat intimidated. . . . You’re meeting people from a different culture for the first time; it struck me as a daunting task.”

Subsequent missions grew increasingly easier, said Dallas, who thinks he’s become better at telling the “Alberta story” and describing the opportunities here.

“I’ve also become more proficient at understanding, during the course of a meeting or a visit, what creates interest for the parties that we’re talking to.”

For instance, an increasing number of countries are eager to tap into their unconventional resources, like shale gas and oil.

“They’re looking to Alberta to provide technical

expertise and leadership from our experiences.”

With time spent in countries as diverse as China, Hungary, France and United Arab Emirates, Dallas has had to familiarize himself with a variety of cultures and regional issues. He relies on detailed briefings, including from officials in the 13 international offices that Alberta maintains.

“That really facilitates successful missions, when you’ve done your homework before you start.”

Also important is having a genuine respect for others while travelling, suggested Dallas.

“I find that people are generally easy to communicate with, and if you demonstrate that you value and are interested in their culture and background, it makes for a good way to start a conversation.”

The process is helped by the fact that Alberta has much to offer, not only in the area of energy but in other sectors like agriculture, forestry, advanced manufacturing and environmental technology, he said.

“People are often surprised at the tremendous breadth of what’s happening in our economy here.”

Sometimes, Dallas must respond to negative perceptions about Alberta — particularly when it comes to the environmental impact of the oil and gas industry here. He responds with information about provincial initiatives like the carbon levy on large industrial emitters that in turn goes into a green technology fund.

Dallas thinks his tenure as International and Intergovernmental Relations minister comes at a critical time. Albertans understand the importance of diversified, international trade, and of obtaining full value for the products and services they provide. He said there is now also a great opportunity to expand our export profile beyond traditional commodities.

One of only four provinces with a minister dedicated specifically to international affairs, Alberta is also among the leaders when it comes to applying resources to this portfolio. That makes sense, said Dallas, when you consider that the province’s $102 billion in exports last year accounted for one-fifth of

Canada’s total — and was the fastest-growing tally in the country.

Some people are critical of the cost of Dallas’s travels, but he insists the benefits are worth it.

“The evidence is pretty clear that these missions directly lead, over a period of time, to increased sales, increased exports, increased opportunities for Albertans.

“There was a recent mission to China where there were direct business transactions in the range of about $25 million, and there was investment attraction into Alberta, I believe, of $440 million.”

Often, the payoffs aren’t realized until years later, he added.

Dallas also pointed out that Alberta’s trade missions are “jam-packed” with meetings and events to get the most out of every travel dollar.

“It’s a grueling schedule when you’re on the mission.”

Despite the associated jet lag and fatigue, he’s relished the opportunity to see different countries and meet interesting people from varied backgrounds.

One such person was Hong Kong businessman Li Ka-shing, considered one of the most powerful figures in Asia. Dallas heard from Ka-shing the importance of having a global outlook and anticipating what’s going to happen in the future rather than what’s taking place now — lessons that apply to Alberta and businesses here.

“It’s very important to be thinking strategically years in advance,” said Dallas. “That’s what I’ve seen from many of the most senior political and business leaders that I’ve had the opportunity to meet with around the world.”

Another memorable meeting involved the Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims and founder of a network of development agencies that focus on environment, health, education, culture, rural development and other social issues. hrichards@reddeeradvocate.com

The Harvard came in two flavours at Penhold: the Mark II and the Mark 4. They were very similar except that the Mk II had a streamlined external direction finding loop compartment on top of the fuselage shaped like a horizontal tear-drop on a thick stalk, while the Mark 4’s loop was housed in a more prosaic streamlined capsule. The Mark II also required the hydraulic system to be activated by an extra lever behind the pilot on the left. If you forgot to push this lever, trying to operate any hydraulically operated accessory (e.g. the retractable wheels) simply didn’t work.

Cadet training leads to command roles

ADVOCATE STAFF As the memory of Canadian Forces Base Penhold and the Royal Canadian Air Force celebrate milestones in 2014, another group is saying goodbye to a long history.

This summer is the last year the Penhold Air Cadet Training Centre will be in operation at its home in Springbrook, the renamed residential portion of the old Penhold base. The camp attracts over 1,000 cadets from across the country every summer, many of whom end up choosing globe-trotting careers in the armed forces.

If it wasn’t for the air cadet program in Central Alberta, George Macdonald, a retired 65-year-old RCAF lieutenant-general, said his life may have turned out very differently.

Born and raised in Red Deer, Macdonald, who joined the military right out of high school when his cadet program wrapped up, served with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces in Germany. Then, soon after his promotion to brigadiergeneral, he was named the assistant chief of staff for combat evaluation at the NATO Allied Forces Northern Europe Headquarters in Kolsaas, Norway.

He also put in extensive time with the North American Aerospace Defence Command (known as NORAD) in Winnipeg and Colorado Springs and held the position of Director of Operations in the Foreign and Defence Policy Secretariat in the Privy Council Office.

His impressive list of titles doesn’t end there.

He was the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of NORAD from 1998 to 2001, when he became the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff until 2004.

“I’ve had a very interesting and fulfilling career. I don’t regret it,” said Macdonald, who also commanded an entire air division when he served in Winnipeg.

And it all began with his first flight off of the CFB Penhold air strip when he was a teenager.

“We were fortunate to have an air base nearby and the opportunity to see the flying training that was going on at that time,” said Macdonald.

Later, he took his first flight in an Expeditor aircraft from Penhold as part of the air cadet program.

The program provided the opportunity to fly in many other types of aircraft throughout the years, igniting his love of flying and planes, he said.

Macdonald donned his air cadet cap and stood at attention with the rest of the No. 24 Red Deer squadron for the first time in 1963, in an age before young women were welcome in the program. He was 14 and wanted to follow in the footsteps of a few of his close friends.

“It’s a unique opportunity for a young person to do that . . . (The program provides) valuable training and exposure. It was a bit of a shock to a kid who had no experience with the discipline of a regiment before, but the comradeship, the bond you create with your fellow cadets, that was what stood out,” he said.

“It really sets a person off on the right foot . . . My son joined cadets for a time and it helped him a lot as well.”

The organizational skills, confidence, discipline and aviation knowledge he garnered from cadets helped him choose a career in the armed forces when he turned 18, Macdonald said.

He also started classes at the University of Calgary at 18 and trained with the military during the summers. He began pilot training after finishing his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and spent the first several years as an operational fighter pilot, eventually commanding a fighter squadron and wing at one point.

He retired after 38 years and now works in defence and security consulting with CFN Consultants in Ottawa. rfrancoeur@reddeeradvocate.com

ADVOCATE STAFF David Ives came a long way from practicing cadet drills in the gymnasium at a downtown Red Deer school as a youth to commanding the aircraft in charge of supporting the last Apollo mission to land men on the moon.

Ives, 84, now retired and living in St. Albert, spent 36 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force — an organization celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2014.

For Ives, who grew up in Red Deer, joining the air force was the beginning of a grand lifetime adventure.

He climbed to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and travelled around the world, including a tour with the

United States Air Force.

During his time in the United States, he was the aircraft commander of the air support crew during the 12-day Apollo 17 spaceflight mission. Apollo 17 was the final mission in the United States’ Apollo program to carry a crew to the moon for research.

“We travelled around the south Pacific relative to the location of the Apollo ARIA (Advanced Range Instrumentation Aircraft), which provided technical backup to the Apollo spacecraft, should there be a problem. In that we were a part of that Apollo 17 system,” Ives said. “We were privileged to wear the same patch on our flying suits as did the astronauts.”

ARIA helped with the transmission of data and voice relay from space. It was one of his most exciting ventures, Ives said.

Another career highlight was when he was back

He was actively involved in Operation Morning Light, the quest to find Cosmos 954, the nuclear-powered Soviet satellite that crashed north of Yellowknife in 1978.

“We built an ice runway on a lake in the Thelon Game Sanctuary halfway between Yellowknife and Baker Lake because the helicopters that were taking the soldiers in to try and find these radioactive bits and pieces couldn’t cover that whole area,” Ives said. “We flew 90 operations with C130 Hercules onto the ice, in the period from February to April 1978 and the Hercules is a big airplane.”

Ives found his way to the air force after joining the air cadet program in Red Deer at the age of 13 in 1943.

“It was war time. Every boy was in either air cadets or sea cadets or the army cadets,” said Ives, who was a member of No. 24 Red Deer Squadron.

He came from a military family; his father and grandfathers had been in the army and Ives said he remembered “a lot of the Penhold base airmen” g to his house when he was a child, talking coming a about airplanes and flying.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of t the Canadian Forces Base Penhold, which f formally closed in 1994. The base was one o many in Canada during the Second World of W associated with the well known British War C Commonwealth Air Training Plan.

Throughout the 1950s, the base was chos sen by the RCAF to train air crew pilots on t the Harvards from member countries of the N North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) a Cold War concerns heightened. More than as 5 5,000 Norwegian, Italian, Belgian, French, D Dutch and Canadian students trained at the b base with this program, according to the H Harvard Historical Aviation Society.

“The sky was full of airplanes and that w was more interesting than tanks rumbling b and I had no need to go to sea in a boat,” by I Ives said of his choice to take to the clouds.

After five years in the cadets program a and a trip to England with 24 other Canadian cadets on an exchange in 1948, Ives was sold on getting his wings.

He did just that in 1949, obtaining his private pilot’s license and Air Cadet “Wings” alongside fellow Red Deer air cadet Gary Trimble at the Calgary Flying Club. He went thanks to a scholarship from the Air Cadet League of Canada.

Ives married his longtime sweetheart, Maureen, (also from Red Deer) in 1953.

Ives served as the senior officer responsible for military aid to the civil power in Alberta as his last “tour” with the air force. In that period he had the opportunity of conducting the annual inspection of his old air cadet squadron in 1983.

“It was like coming . . . full circle,” he said.

After his retirement, he became the deputy chief electoral officer at Elections Alberta for six years, but the air force will always be “ingrained in me,” said Ives. rfrancoeur@reddeeradvocate.com

ADVOCATE STAFF It’s a long way from Stettler to Hollywood, via Toronto.

But Stettler native Michael Lomenda, 35, recently completed this circuitous trip to fame. He went from acting in the Jersey Boys stage musical in Toronto, to becoming a bona fide Hollywood actor after being cast by director Clint Eastwood in the movie version of the Jersey Boys story, which hits theatres across North America on June 20.

“It’s been so incredible and so far from anything I could have imagined . . . I’m still happily wrapping my brain around it all,” said Lomenda.

Even without knowing what else life has in store for him, he believes the film “will remain the high-

light of my career.”

It all started when Lomenda was in San Francisco performing the role of Nick Massi on a national tour of Jersey Boys. Eastwood dropped in to catch the matinee, and later came backstage to meet the cast.

Although the celebrated actor and director shook hands with everyone in the show, Eastwood didn’t bring up the movie he was about to make based on the popular stage musical about singer Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Lomenda was, therefore, surprised to receive a phone call a few weeks later asking him to come to New York to audition for the Massi role — even though he had no previous film experience.

He arrived on the East Coast in a downpour and gridlocked traffic. After inching along Manhattan streets in a taxi, he showed up for the audition

soaked and 30 minutes late.

As the frazzled Lomenda tried fixing his wet hair and steadying his nerves in the bathroom he told himself, “You’re late. Suck it up. You know this.” But halfway through his audition, he asked to start over again.

“In the end, I suspect it was more that matinee performance Mr. Eastwood saw that scored me the part,” he said.

As to why he was cast instead of other actors who played Massi on different stages across North America and London — including Broadway — who knows?

“So much is luck,” said Lomenda. “Hard work, yes, Skill, yes. But so much is timing, and a small amount of fate.”

FEELING BOTH SMALL AND STRONG, LIKE AN ANT Maybe there was something in the stars, as Lomenda and Massi share a Sept. 19th birthday.

“That always weirds me out in a fantastic way,” said the actor, who is astonished at the “amazing, life-changing stuff that has come my way playing the understated Nick Massi.”

Massi was the bass singer and bass guitarist for the Four Seasons, who left the group for personal reasons in 1965. And Jersey Boys is a musical biography that follows the quartet through tough times and personal clashes to ultimate triumph as the friends create music that defines a generation.

Lomenda wrapped up his film experience with great appreciation for Eastwood, who is “masterful, generous, patient, hilarious, respectful and wellrespected.”

He believes Eastwood’s re-imagined version of Jersey Boys will further flesh out the story that’s wowed theatre audiences across the continent.

One of the “coolest” things was watching details from the era emerge in sets, props and costumes, said the actor, who noted film lends itself to more intricate visuals than theatrical productions.

“Every day I showed up to set there were these great, exciting moments . . . of “‘Ah! Cool! That’s what Nicky’s car looks like,’ and ‘Wild! That’s how they imagine Gyp’s house!’ It was like Christmas every day. I was constantly amazed.”

by Christopher Walken, who was fantastic in the role and a pleasure to work with, said Lomenda.

The Central Alberta native filmed his most involved scene in the movie with Walken on Lomenda’s real-life birthday. After a long day of shooting, there was cake and everyone sang Happy Birthday to him — including Walken and Eastwood. “It’s going to be hard to top that birthday!” said Lomenda, who is interested in pursuing more movie roles.

perience to be full of firsts. “It completely turned me on my head in the best way . . . I looked at acting and performing through (cinematic) eyes . . . and am 100 per cent fully hooked. The prospect of diving in and learning more really excites me.”

Lomenda grew up in Stettler thinking he wanted to be an architect. But after falling under the influence of an enthusiastic high school drama teacher, he decided to enroll instead in theatre studies at Red Deer College, then Sheridan College’s nationally recognized musical theatre program.

He entertained briefly on a cruise ship after graduating, then got roles in Miss Saigon, Forever Plaid, Cabaret and Grease with various regional theatre companies. Landing the Massi role in the Toronto production of the Tony Award-winning musical Jersey Boys was his biggest break so far.

Lomenda credits his supportive parents and his Central Alberta upbringing for giving him that undefinable quality that helped to set him apart from a lot of other actors.

“There’s this interesting paradox when you grow up in a small town on the flat prairies, poetically speaking: The massive open sky (that) . . . makes you feel both tiny and strong as an ant. When you are surrounded by openness so grand and beautiful as a prairie sky, it’s at once paralyzing and galvanizing.”

Growing up in a place like Stettler also gives you with “a strong sense of self, and your family extends so much further than just the walls of your house.”

Lomenda recalled having “the most ridiculous picture of me at my dorkiest” accepting an award presented by fellow student Tricia Helfer, of Stettler County. Helfer went on to become a supermodel and actress in shows such as Battlestar Galactica.

“I am in humbling company as a Stettlerite working hard to (make a) mark,” he said.

k.d. lang: Entertainer From Consort to Broadway?

ADVOCATE STAFF From her roots as a Consort cow punker to becoming an award-winning, globally-acclaimed recording artist — and now Broadway baby — k.d. lang has done it all.

And she’s done it all her way.

The Central Alberta singer has reached lofty heights few other Canadians have attained, winning four Grammy Awards, multiple Junos, and achieving multi-million international sales for pop albums such as Ingenue.

In the process, the former Kathryn Dawn Lang has also become known for taking some controversial stands as an animal rights, gay rights and Tibetan human rights activist.

Most recently the self-described “Broadway virgin,” replaced Fantasia Barrino in the hit stage revue After Midnight. Lang put her own stamp on the songs Stormy Weather, I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, Zah, Zuh, Zaz and On the Sunny Side of the Street and won over tough New York theatre critics.

Instead of crooning the Cotton Club-inspired material in sexy, low-cut gowns for the revue, as did Barrino, the openly gay singer wore her usual menswear pieces. And instead of dancing in front of a male chorus, lang did it with a line-up of female dancers.

At one point, she did what Vulture critic Jesse Green called “a charming little ballroom turn with one of them.”

It all worked wonderfully. According to Green, “She was superb. The years have done nothing to curdle that ultra-creamy voice, with its sweet upper

register and socko chest tones.”

Having contributed songs to movie soundtracks, performed live at two Olympics (in 2010 and 1988), and partnered with Roy Orbison, Tony Bennett, Elton John, and Anne Murray for various duets, lang can now cross “premiering on Broadway” off her todo list.

The mezzo-soprano, who moved from Los Angeles to Portland, Ore., must have had big dreams while growing up in a small town on the Prairies.

Although lang was born in Edmonton, her family moved to Consort, where her father was a drug store owner, when she was nine months old.

Upon graduating high school, she moved to Red Deer to attend Red Deer College. It was there that lang decided to become a professional singer, forming a Patsy Cline tribute band called the Reclines in 1983. The band put out the album Friday Dance Promenade and regularly played at the Sidetrack Cafe in Edmonton.

The group’s second album, A Truly Western Experience, received great reviews and some national attention. In 1985, lang landed her first of what were to become eight Juno Awards.

In 1986, she signed with an American record producer and put out the landmark album Angel With a Lariat, produced by Dave Edmunds.

Her career got a further boost when she unleashed her perfectly pitched, smoky voice in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Fans later went ballistic when Orbison chose her as a duet partner for a recording of Crying, which won the pair a 1989 Grammy for Best Country Collaboration.

This was followed by her much lauded, awardwinning albums Shadowland, Absolute Torch and

Twang, and Ingenue, which featured lang’s most loved song, Constant Craving, and Miss Chatelaine.

Her 1997 album Drag, was dedicated to songs about smoking, but also featured lang on the cover dressed in menswear, suggesting a double meaning.

Throughout the years, lang collaborated with many other artists, including Dwight Yoakum, James Bond movie composer David Arnold, Anne Wilson of Heart, and one of her childhood idols, Anne Murray.

She sang on soundtracks of Gus Van Sant’s film Even Cowboys Get the Blues, as well as Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, and the animated Home on the Range.

In 2006, she put out the popular album Hymns of the 49th Parallel, covering tunes written by iconic Canadians, including Bruce Cockburn, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Ron Sexsmith, Jane Siberry, and Neil Young. It went platinum in Canada, with 100,000 in sales, and double-platinum in Australia.

Lang later blew the roof off Vancouver’s Olympic arena with her soulful rendition of Cohen’s Hallelujah during the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Having already been made an Officer of the Order of Canada, and having seized the No. 33 spot on the 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll, lang was formally inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of fame in 2013.

In a characteristic move, she praised Canadians for “letting your freak flags fly” during her irreverent and humorous acceptance speech.

Although she started out her career by ticking off some Central Albertans for her anti-beef campaign, lang has remained a strong individualist and a stellar talent. lmichelin@reddeeradvocate.com

A ‘not-a-zoo’ where the animals can work a crowd, and a camera

ADVOCATE STAFF When the trained bears at Innisfail’s Discovery Wildlife Park want to hear some appreciation for their performance, who is going to argue?

Spectators at the bears’ twice daily performances enthusiastically hoot and clap for the furry film and television actors — including a 600-plus-kg male grizzly — in enclosures about 10 metres away from the public.

Park owner Doug Bos said visitors come to his zoo for that unique interaction.

“They want to connect with the animals. That’s what people like about our place. The stuff we do with the animals, how we treat them,” said Bos, who has operated his zoo for over 20 years.

Shows featuring the bears and big cats are held daily from May 1 to Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Most recently his two grizzlies, Whopper, a 16-year-old male, and Ursula, an 11-year-old female, starred in a TV commercial for Chobani Greek yogurt that aired during the 2014 Super Bowl.

Filmed in B.C., the ad features a bear that ransacks a small-town grocery store until it finds the yogurt. The bear politely rings a bell for service while leaning on the checkout counter before sauntering off with his dairy product.

The two bears shared the title role, with Whopper standing on his hind legs growling for the camera, while Ursula was the well-mannered bear at the counter.

“It made Ellen Degeneres, as one of her favourite Super Bowl commercials,” Bos said.

Ruth LaBarge trains five Discovery bears for roles in films and commercials. Her bears have appeared

in movies such as Anchorman, Borat and Brokeback Mountain, and dozens of TV shows and commercials.

Last fall, veterinarian Michelle Oakley from the show Yukon Vet on the Nat Geo Wild channel filmed an episode at Discovery Wildlife Park to air this year.

Rather than working on sedated animals as usual,

The female pups, named Nissa and Lopé, required bottle feeding. Since they are being hand-raised they may be good candidates to be trained to have their photos taken with visitors.

“They will be a great attraction. Everyone seems to have this obsession about wolves. It’s amazing how many people love wolves.”

Bos said they can’t be released back into the wild because they came to Discovery imprinted on humans.

“When you hand-raise something, it becomes imprinted. It doesn’t have the fear of humans. In the wolves’ case, they could end up hanging around farmers’ yards because they’re not scared, eating their cows or whatever, and then getting shot.”

Bos said not too many zoos take in orphans but Discovery does what it can.

The park maintains large enclosures for its animals and plenty of green space for visitors to roam or just sit and relax on the grass.

Discovery, and its 40 species zoo, is located on 90 acres. Wide walking paths and large viewing areas allow visitors lots of room to watch the animals, he said.

Lessons learned at Red Deer College’s Department of Hockey

ADVOCATE STAFF Mike Babcock has not coached in Red Deer in almost 20 years, but the lessons he learned while at the college shaped him into one of the top hockey coaches in the world.

He is the first Canadian coach to win a Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship, a world junior hockey championship, a world hockey championship, a Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal, of which he now has two.

But it was a defeat Babcock, 51, suffered in 1989 at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championship tournament with the Red Deer College Kings that gave him the drive to become the best in the business.

The RDC Kings were the Alberta Colleges Ath-

letic Association champions, but were upset 3-2 by the Perry Pearn coached NAIT Ooks in the championship final.

“I thought we dominated that game and we lost,” he said. “I remember what a harsh feeling that was to stand there and watch somebody else get the gold medal while we got the silver. It was my first chance to have a feeling positive or negative as a coach.”

Babcock left RDC in 1991 to become head coach of the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors.

In 1993 he was hired as coach of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, and in his only year at the helm he led the school to their first post-season berth and a surprise CIS championship. The next season he was hired away by the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs where he spent the next six seasons. There he was named coach of the year twice and is still the franchise’s all-time wins leader with a regular season record of 228-173-29.

In 2000, he was hired by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks’ farm team, the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, and two years later he was on the bench of the NHL club.

His first year in Anaheim, he coached the Ducks to the Stanley Cup final where they were beat in seven games by the New Jersey Devils.

In 2005 he was hired by the Detroit Red Wings to replace Dave Lewis and his successes have continued. He finally won his Stanley Cup in 2008, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games.

In 2010, he coached Team Canada to gold at the Olympics in Vancouver and repeated that feat this past February in Sochi, Russia.

The impact RDC had on his career is undeniable, after Al Ferchuk took a chance on the rookie coach in 1988.

BIG DREAMS, WITH EYES WIDE OPEN Back then, however, he was just looking for a job in hockey. He had no idea he one day would be coaching in the NHL, let alone the Olympics.

Even after winning the CIS championship, it was not a tangible reality in Babcock’s eyes.

“At that time, it was just a fantasy. Goals and fantasies are two totally separate things,” he said.

“One’s a dream you have when you’re asleep at night and one’s a dream you have when your eyes are open during the day.

One’s real and one’s hokey.”

In 2004 ,RDC shuttered their men’s hockey program after almost 40 years, due to financial issues.

When Babcock was asked to host the 2010 RDC Athletics Breakfast, he directly challenged athletic director Keith Hansen and the college to bring men’s hockey back.

Those words kick-started the formation of the RDC Athletics Endowment program and the team made its return to the ACAC this year, advancing all the way to the league semifinal.

“I think it just makes no sense not to have a program there,” said Babcock. “You have the Red Deer Rebels, which is great, but there’s got to be a place for those guys to go to and stay and play. It’s just such a big part of the File photo by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS community.”

A life of achievement, with no regrets

Figure skating champion Jamie Salé looks back at her career and truly has no regrets.

“I think I did more for myself than I ever thought I would,” said the retired world and Olympic champion, who also skated as a professional.

“Being from Red Deer, everyone likes to dream, but I never thought I would get out of Red Deer when I was skating. The next thing I knew I was moving to Edmonton where all the big shots were training and I was on my way.”

Salé started visiting the Royal Glenora Club in Edmonton in the late 1980s to train with some of the country’s top coaches and skaters. From there, she began competing as a singles skater, winning the novice bronze medal and placing eighth in the junior ladies division of the Canadian championships.

In 1994, she won the short program and won bronze in the junior event of the nationals, and also won bronze with her pairs partner, Jason Turner.

That same year, the duo finished 12th at the Lillehammer Olympics and 16th at the world championships in China. Turner and Salé ended their partnership that August.

She returned to singles skating, but five years later joined David Pelletier to form a union that would result in a pairs world championship in Vancouver in 2001 and a gold medal at the Salt Lake City Olympics a year later.

“When I came home with our gold medal, it was a bit of a dream come true and I thought ‘Wow, I’ve done more than I ever thought I would do,’ ” said Salé. “I have no regrets. I don’t think there’s anything else I could have done. We won a world and an Olympic title and we always said, ‘Let’s leave while we’re on a high.’ ” Salé and Pelletier won Skate America and Skate Canada titles in the 2001-02 season and eventually turned pro and began touring with Stars on Ice, a figure skating show.

The pair were engaged in 2004 and married the following year. They had a son, Jesse, in 2007 and were inducted into the Skate Canada Hall of Fame a year later.

Salé and Pelletier later divorced. She married former NHL forward Craig Simpson in 2012. They have one daughter, Samantha, who was born in July of last year.

Salé and Simpson teamed up to take top honours in Season 1 of the CBC show Battle of the Blades in 2009. The next year she skated with another former NHL player, Theoren Fleury. She served as a judge on the show last fall.

These days, the 37-year-old is living in Edmonton as a full-time mother to her two children.

ADVOCATE SPORTS EDITOR It’s almost as if Kurt Browning doesn’t realize the extent of his notoriety in his home town.

Not that he doesn’t appreciate the recognition. In fact, he recently hinted that he might even be back in Caroline — at the Kurt Browning Arena — at some point to show his appreciation.

As an amateur skater, Browning was the pride of Caroline and all of Central Alberta as he won four men’s singles world championships between 1989 and 1993 and represented Canada in three Winter Olympics.

Along the way, he was twice honoured with the Lionel Conacher Award as Canada’s male athlete of the year and was presented with the Lou Marsh Award as the top Canadian athlete. He was also inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Canadian Figure Skating Hall of Fame and 2000, and was honoured with a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame.

“I was just walking around the arena in Caroline trying to make some plans to maybe do something there . . . some event or something running around the back of my head,” said the former world champion figure skater who has resided in Toronto for the better part of two decades.

“It’s getting weirder to see my name on the arena than it is easier. It seems like those wins were so long ago to justify putting my name on the arena. It seems like, why is it still there? I mean, it’s just weird. Lots of great and amazing things have happened to you, but they happen to you, and it’s almost likes it happened to someone else — to the skating part of you, not to the real person. It’s kind of like an alter ego.”

Clearly, Browning doesn’t harbour an overblown ego, thanks in part to his upbringing at his rural home near Caroline.

“We had 360 acres when I was growing up, and a lifestyle that included a lot of hunting and trapping,” he said. “It was just a very rodeo, rural upbringing, which I think really helps me today. It made me different on the ice. I think growing up in Central Alberta was a positive influence and my wife will tell you that the rural-boy part of me has never left.

“And yet I come home and watch the Caroline parade and say to myself, ‘I don’t fit in here either’.”

“Most importantly, I’m a mom. I haven’t skated in two years, so I’m pretty much retired,” she noted.

“I’m involved in many different charity events and I’m on the board of Special Olympics Alberta. I’m kind of trying to do a lot of volunteering stuff now because I have the time.”

Salé has also served as a figure skating coach but that sideline is over, at least for now.

“I’m just a bit busy right now. I really want to be home with my daughter and my son is in school,” she said. “I spent a lot of time with Jesse when he was little and I’d like to do the same with my daughter.

Right now, I don’t want to give that up.”

Salé, whose father and brother reside in Red Deer and whose mother lives in Calgary, credits former Red Deer figure skating coach Debbie Wilson for playing a major role during her early years as a skater.

“She’s the reason why I got to where I was,” said Salé. “She was a great coach and she pushed me to move on to Edmonton (to train). I have very good memories of skating with Debbie, and Red Deer was a good little town for me to grow up in. It’s funny, I’ve been in Edmonton longer than I was growing up in Red Deer.”

Her Red Deer school teachers were also guiding lights as Salé was beginning her competitive career at an early age.

I started competing at a national level at the end of my eighth grade. They allowed me to do it and didn’t make a big deal out of me missing four days or even a week here and there.

“They would put up my newspaper articles in school and they were just so supportive. I really appreciated that because school was tough.”

Indeed, the attention Salé received sometimes made her a focus of tormentors.

“I was bullied in school in Red Deer. You’re different, you’re travelling and you’re in the paper and people make a big deal out of you,” she said. “I guess I was a target, but skating was my outlet. I was so grateful to have it.

“You hear about that kind of stuff a lot. I wasn’t alone and I’m not feeling sorry for myself. It was

character-building and I would say that I’m an interesting character today. But it was hard, really hard.

I used to go home crying a lot. But the teachers were really good to me.”

Overall, Salé enjoyed a tremendous ride as a renowned skater and she’s still evolving as a person and loving parent.

“I have a really great life and I’m so fortunate to have the family and friends that I have,” she said.

“You’re always on a journey and for me this is what it’s really all about.

“You’re always learning and things do change for you, but you adapt. I’m all about being happy, that’s kind of my personality. I have a really good life and I cherish it and nurture it. I definitely don’t take it for granted.” gmeachem@reddeeradvocate.com

HEʼS DOING WHAT HE LOVES, SO HEʼS NOT STOPPING Browning, who in late May attended a family “get together” at Rocky Mountain House, admitted he doesn’t get back to Central Alberta on a regular basis.

“I’m kind of busy. I have two kids at home, three different jobs and my parents aren’t alive anymore, so I don’t visit here as much as I used to,” he said.

Browning has been a professional skater for 20 years, appearing in shows around the world, including the Orient and Europe.

“I also choreograph for other skaters, so that keeps me busy when I’m home,” he said. “I kind of take jobs hit and miss and I also commentate for CBC. I was at the worlds and the Olympics with CBC this year.”

Browning also served as co-host — with Ron MacLean — on the CBC show Battles of the Blades and last year was a judge on the show.

“I liked being a judge. It was much, much harder than just co-hosting with Ron,” he said.

“Obviously, you’re playing a bigger role in the outcome of the show. But I enjoyed the challenge.”

He also enjoys skating for a living. In some ways, his vocation as a professional performer is a better fit for his outgoing personality than the amateur stage.

“You could say that. I think that you can give that notion that you’re having a party out on the ice,” he stated. “If you’re out and performing it’s always good to give that aura that you want to be out in front of people.

“Anybody who picks up a banjo, hockey stick or whatever it is that they do . . . if you have a feeling from them that that’s what they really love to do, then you also feel more comfortable as an audience member.

“That’s pretty important for anything in life. You could be telling a joke at the dinner table.”

Browning’s achievements have been both plentiful and prestigious, and none more notable than his national athlete awards.

“On a personal level, if you’re at a certain level of skating and you think you have a chance to win a competition and you do — if it’s the worlds or Olympics or whatever if might be — still somehow you were kind of expecting it, or hoping for it,” he said.

“What you’re not hoping for or expecting is to be athlete of the year for all of Canada. Those were really cool, and I felt that it was good that figure skating was being looked at in that light. I was up against people like Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. Just to be included on that list and then to actually win . . .

on a personal level, a sit-around-the-campfire level, I’d say that was pretty neat.”

Browning, who in 1996 married Sonia Martinez, a principal dancer with the National Ballet of Canada, and has two sons, Gabriel, 10, and Dillon, six, doesn’t show any signs of slowing down at the age of 47.

Nor does he harbour any plans of retirement.

“There’s no solid end date for me with my skating.

I just want to slowly fade away and tell people to forget me,” he joked. “I don’t want a banner proclaiming I’m not skating or performing any more.

“If a role came along in someone’s TV special, say if they needed a wizard, then I would appreciate the fact I hadn’t retired. As soon as you say you’re retired, every other skater is always in the next show.”

Speaking of shows, Browning noted that he has a spectacle in mind for April of 2015.

“Next year will be the 25th anniversary of Stars on Ice in Canada and some sort of special show is on my wish list,” he said.

When the need is for speed, slowing down is not an option

ADVOCATE STAFF Olympic medalist Mellisa Hollingsworth has been on the road for 19 years, so taking time to rest might make good sense for the average person. But the Eckville-born skeleton racer has never been average.

As soon as the dust settled at the Sochi Olympics Winter Games in February, Hollingsworth flew to Texas to train with professional barrel racer Tammy Fischer. Hollingsworth decided last winter would be her final season on the skeleton track.

Over the season she took time to be grateful for the opportunity and the journey, whether it was a good or bad race.

“There’s a lot of life lessons that I have learned through sport that will be able to transfer into this next chapter,” she said. “I am not wishing to be back training and get back to the tour. I am happy to lay it all to rest.”

Hollingsworth does have one regret about Sochi

Olympics in Russia — not being a better weatherman.

“It was unfortunate because my training had gone so well in Sochi,” said Hollingsworth. “I don’t think I had a training run that was slower than a fifth rank.

That first day of our race, the weather warmed up so much . . . In the big picture after Day One, I was really happy that I was able to end my career on that second rank run.”

She capped her long career with an 11th place finish at the games on top of her bronze medal in Torino in 2006 and a fifth-place finish in Vancouver in 2010. She won the women’s Skeleton World Cup overall title in 2005-2006 and 2009-2010.

One thing that most people do not know is that she has battled the effects of concussions in the last few years of her career. Hollingsworth remembers the biggest impact was hitting her head in a race in December 2008 in Germany.

After that things were a little bit squirrelly and she never felt quite right. She suffered daily headaches and anxiety.

“In the 2012-2013 season, I struggled quite a bit but I didn’t recognize that it was concussion stuff,” she said.

“You think that you are not sliding down the track like you normally do, you better do it again and try harder. You might not realize your brain isn’t working properly and that’s why it can’t keep up with the speed. I didn’t have great results and I didn’t feel like me. I was very anxious and panicky. What I was seeing on the track and feeling wasn’t correct. That summer I was in the gym training and I had a really big episode where I was bedridden for four days.”

Last August, Hollingsworth went to the Valentus Clinic in Victoria, B.C., and underwent a brain-wave optimization treatment that is thought to retrain the brain after a concussion or other injury.

The one-week treatment allowed her to get back to training and sliding without the “sled head.” Now, her goal is to help others by increasing awareness about the technology and treatment at the clinic.

Dallas Soonias: Volleyball Player

Dallas Soonias could claim the Johnny Cash song I’ve Been Everywhere as his own.

Over his nine-year professional volleyball career, the 30-year-old from Red Deer has played in 10 countries.

This doesn’t include his travels with the Canadian junior and senior nationals teams.

“I’ve seen a lot of the world and it’s certainly interesting and I’ve enjoyed it,” he said in an interview from Gatineau, Que., where Team Canada was working out prior to leaving to join the World League.

Soonias grew up in Red Deer, playing club volleyball as well as with the Lightning of Hunting Hills High School. After graduation, he joined the Red Deer College Kings for two seasons and was part of an exceptional college team in 2002-03. That season, the team posted a 40-0 record against college teams; won the University of Saskatchewan tournament, beating three Top 10 university teams along the way; and split a twin bill with Brigham Young University in Utah (BYU went on to finish second in the NCAA tournament).

“I came out and my coaches and family were like: ‘Wow you are a different person!’” said Hollingsworth. “My energy levels were up. I was able to get to work in the gym and feel good. I was able to go into my last competitive season as the strongest and fastest I have ever been. For me it was a lifesaver, a career saver.”

As one of Canada’s greats in skeleton racing, Hollingsworth is also known for her love of all things rodeo. She was born and raised on a Central Alberta ranch and loves competing on the rodeo circuit.

Hollingsworth made her professional barrel racing debut in 2011. She met Fischer, who has become a good friend and mentor, a few years ago in Calgary.

“When I bought my mare a couple years ago, I thought I would jump right into the circuit and be chasing rodeo pretty hard,” said Hollingsworth. “But I am pretty tired. I have been on the road for 19 years so right now this summer my vision is to rodeo and barrel locally.”

Hollingsworth will soon call Sylvan Lake home.

Canada had one of their best seasons last year, beating Russia in the World League playoffs and finishing fifth overall.

And last winter, Soonias got a chance to play in China.

The Chinese are just beginning to allow foreigners to compete in their league. “They took myself and a guy from Finland and I was the top scorer in the league, but then they set me all the time.”

After leaving China at the end of their season, he played in Qatar until returning to the national program.

Soonias isn’t sure how many more years he’ll play.

“Over the years besides my shoulder, I’ve had disk problems in my back and the wear and tear on my body takes its toll,” he said. “I have to decide if I’m willing to do it . . . is it worth it?

“I know I’m getting toward the twilight of my career. When I can’t continue to play at a high level and I’m not having fun anymore, it will be time to step down.

“But I have to say I’m still having a lot of fun.”

Once he does retire, he will likely finish his university degree and go from there.

“I don’t have a solid plan yet but I’m also not worried about it right now . . . we’ll see.”

Canada is ranked 11th in the world and has qualified for the world championships. The national team will once again play in the World League with the first three stops in Calgary, Vancouver and Edmonton. drode@reddeeradvocate.com

Since May she has been back in Alberta in time for Passion for Excellence, a school visit program where Hollingsworth shares her story and inspires students. Hollingsworth offers advice: you have to love what you do; make sure you take time every day to enjoy what you’re doing.

“The trophies collect dust,” she said. “You better be enjoying the journey on the way because when you are in the old folks homes those are the stories you’re going to be telling. I already find myself in the last few years doing that. I don’t necessarily remember the results. I can’t tell you the different race results from different years. I am going to remember stories with my friends and my coaches and some of the good times and the bad times.”

Hollingsworth still receives emails and letters of support from across Canada more than four years after the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Expectations were high as she went into the games as a defending World Cup champion. Hollingsworth was in second place after the first three runs but costly errors in her final run left her looking at the podium in fifth place.

A tearful Hollingsworth apologized to the nation, saying she felt she had let Canadians down. Years later, Hollingsworth remembers she felt it was her responsibility to talk to the media immediately after the race because a lot of people would not.

“It was much easier to hide and let your representative talk for you,” said Hollingsworth. “I felt they supported me on this journey and they should hear it from me. I was expecting a lot of bad things, a lot of criticism. I was so wrong and that’s what makes me so proud to represent this country and live in this country. I was so surprised at how compassionate Canadians were.”

Hollingsworth shares this story often, telling others that it is easy to win and to deliver those happy victory speeches, but it is really tough to lose. She said she is very grateful for the support over the years.

“I think that’s how you can have a bigger impact and who you are will really come out and the respect will follow with that,” she said. crhyno@reddeeradvocate.com

RDC Kings program Canada’s most successful The Red Deer College Kings are the most successful team in the history of Canadian men’s college volleyball. And the players who have helped make the program exceptional have made their mark far and wide.

The Kings won an unprecedented eight straight CCAA (Canadian Colleges Athletic Association) titles between 2000-07 and have captured a record 11 titles overall. The program also has two silver and three bronze medals on its resumé.

No program has graduated as many players to the national team or the professional ranks.

At one time, six former Kings were on the Canadian national senior team: Murray Grapentine, Brock Davidiuk, Nicholas Cundy, Dallas Soonias, Mark Dodds and Gavin Schmitt. Chaim Schalk is a member of the Canadian senior beach volleyball team.

Overall, 17 former Kings have played for Team Canada at various levels.

And more than 20 RDC players have received AllCanadian recognition. Five of them — Joey Martins, Mike McPherson, Cundy, Davidiuk and Mitch Irvine — were named players of the year in the CCAA. Martins, who has also spent time with the senior national team, won the award twice.

Besides those who competed for the national team, several other ex-Kings played professionally.

RDC head coach Aaron Schulha played professional volleyball after graduating, as did Jon Walsh,

Martins and Richard Schick, to name a few. Schulha was also named the CCAA volleyball coach of the year this season and was recognized as CCAA coach of the year for all sports.

Former Kings head coach Keith Hansen, who is the RDC athletic director, was instrumental in putting together the team that first won a title in 1995.

Hansen was a former assistant coach with the senior national team, and the only college coach to handle the Canadian team at the World University Games (in 2005). He also coached internationally in Germany.

Four former members of the Kings — Cundy, Davidiuk, Schulha and Dodds — were also on the World University Games team (Soonias and Martins were with the national team at the time).

This year Martins, who coaches the Niagara College women’s team, will be an assistant coach with the national women’s team. Davidiuk and Dodds are assistants with the junior men’s national squad.

This year’s edition of the ACAC and CCAA champion Kings resembled teams of the past for their level of talent and depth. Eight players will go on to university next season, but with outstanding middle blocker Chris Osborn and All-Canadian Tim Finnigan returning, and another strong recruiting class, don’t expect them to slip away.

A great idea isn’t enough; Red Deer College can help make it real

ADVOCATE STAFF Offering entrepreneur, inventors and businesses alike the chance to test and hone their idea or product before it is ready for the market, the Red Deer College Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing has had several success stories since it opened.

The one on the tip of applied research technician Heidi Holt’s tongue is the innovative Trauma Care trauma clamp, a small device used by paramedics and emergency medical responders to stop the bleeding in an area.

The clamp closes skin firmly, allowing blood to properly coagulate. The idea came from Dr. Dennis Filip, a 20-year military trauma surgeon, who most recently served in Afghanistan.

“He thought there must be a better way to deal with bullet wounds,” said Alicia Cafferata-Arnett, applied research and innovation project co-ordinator and manager.

“Where we came in was helping with the conceptual design. A group of design engineers who would send us the latest design specifications and we would print it off (using a 3-D printer) and send it back to him.”

Area search & rescue team prepared to search the globe

ADVOCATE STAFF The hiker’s body was found curled up under a large rock on a mountainside in Malawi.

His desperate bid to shield himself from the storm had left him all but invisible to searchers in the air at Mount Mulanje in the southeastern African nation.

So it was that Jamie Schur and a sixstrong group of Central Alberta search and rescue volunteers found themselves in 2008 gingerly working their way down a narrow track as part of what started out as a rescue effort. Sadly, this time the mountain climber was found too late — the cold had taken its toll on the climbing tourist.

Local search and rescue team members have also put their unique skills and technical expertise to work in China, Indonesia and Italy following earthquakes, and have been part of major training exercises in Colombia, Britain and the U.S. Closer to home, they are often called out dozens of times a year. They have been at major disasters such as the Pine Lake tornado in 2000, and have been turned to countless times to search for lost hikers or children, or even to help RCMP search for Contributed photo evidence.

Other organizations, such as the International Rescue Corps, out of Britain, and the Asian International Rescue Organization are other contacts.

Through another agreement, local people work with Texas Tech Task Force 1, an urban search and rescue organization that can now draw on Central Alberta’s expertise if needed.

Local search and rescue is also registered with the United Nations and receives bulletins when an incident happens that fits their skill sets.

When the call comes, they are booking flights and on the move within hours, paying their own way. Donations and fundraising efforts over the years have provided a small amount of support (for instance the British firefighters donated some work clothing) but for most part, volunteers dig into their own pockets.

They arrive equipped to be self-sufficient for 10 days. That’s important because those facing a disaster can rarely spare the resources to house and feed scores of incoming rescue volunteers. pcowley@reddeeradvocate.com

Word of the local group’s expertise has spread internationally. In February, a 15-strong contingent from several British fire departments spent a week in Central Alberta to learn cold weather survival and search skills in the Crimson Lake area near Rocky Mountain House.

Next year, three more fire departments and the Royal Marines want to come.

Forging international partnerships has long been a key component in the development of local search and rescue forces.

The British contacts were made at a training exercise at Texas A&M University’s Disaster City, a 52-acre facility that allows rescuers to experience just about every rescue scenario imaginable.

Henderson and Schur have been invited to travel to Britain later this year to speak at a search and rescue event.

International partnerships are also marked by the inclusion of local volunteers on cross-border organizations.

For instance, about half of the local volunteers are part of the Canadian International Rescue Organization, which responds to incidents world-
