New Energy villas is a new development in Jiangsu province, China that will feature 168 Asian-style single family homes, built using wood-frame construction. Ninety-nine homes are already completed. By Tom Fletcher When B.C.’s wood products trade mission visited Nanjing, China five years ago, government and industry representatives watched lumber being hauled by labourers with ropes onto the roofs of a vast expanse of concrete apartment buildings. Trusses were built using hammers and handsaws, to replace thousands of roofs damaged by the deadly 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Builders were pleased with the new method, which replaced angle iron pulled up to the roofs and welded

into trusses. When B.C.’s annual delegation returned to Nanjing this Thanksgiving weekend for its annual Asia sales trip, Forests Minister Steve Thomson said the roof reconstruction work continues. But now wood construction has become more sophisticated in Jiangsu Province, a centre of electronics and other industries whose gross domestic product is half as much as all of Canada. “They’re doing residential properties, they’re also doing recreational properties, the villas, planned commu-

nities,” Thomson said in a phone interview from Nanjing Oct. 11. Thomson also met with executives of Sinar Mas, the Indonesian conglomerate that has invested heavily in B.C.’s wood pulp industry through its Richmondbased subsidiary Paper Excellence. The B.C. delegation toured the world’s largest paper mill, which uses all of the production from Mackenzie Pulp in northern B.C. and most of Howe Sound Pulp and Paper. Paper Excellence also owns the pulp mill in Skookumchuck in the

Kootenays, and this spring it purchased the former Tembec pulp mill in Chetwynd that has been shut down since 2012. The annual lumber trade mission is required by B.C. legislation. Thomson said the next stop in Beijing is for his first meetings with nationallevel Chinese officials, before the group heads to Tokyo and Seoul, South Korea. Lumber purchases to China have risen steadily in the past decade, with sales surpassing the U.S. for the first time in 2011.

Province seeks input on transportation Submitted Over the next nine weeks, the Government of B.C. is asking British Columbians to consider and help identify transportation opportunities and priorities as it develops “B.C. on the Move”, a new 10-year transportation plan to build the economy and connect the province’s communities. Beginning today, British Columbians are invited to provide input on the transportation needs most important to them and to their region. A feedback form accompanies the online Discussion Guide, which offers an overview of B.C.’s transportation network, an outline of accomplishments and highlights of strategies moving forward.

“I look forward to hearing from British Columbians as we develop our new 10-year transportation plan. Through this engagement, British Columbians can help shape our transportation priorities for the next decade. A safe, efficient, integrated, cost-effective transportation network is the backbone of our economy, so tell us about what’s important to you, because our transportation network is important to all of us,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone. The feedback form and Discussion Guide are available online at http://engage.gov. bc.ca/transportationplan/. Feedback will be accepteduntil 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014. The input gathered

from this province wide engagement will be considered along with technical information and input from key stakeholders. These stakeholder meetings started in early September, as Parliamentary Secretary Jordan Sturdy met with over 70 groups on Vancouver Island, including local governments and First Nations, to hear firsthand the transportation needs of Island communities. “B.C. on the Move”, the new 10-year transportation plan, will be ready in the new year and will set out a series of short, medium and longer-term priorities for government. These priorities will focus on growing the economy, moving goods and people safely and reliably, con-

necting and strengthening communities, and maximizing collaboration and investment with partners including First Nations, the federal government, local governments, and the private sector. B.C.’s most recent transportation plan, “Opening Up B.C.”, was developed in 2003. The primary goals of that plan have been accomplished. Since 2001, over $16 billion has been invested in transportation infrastructure to improve the quality of life for B.C. families and strengthen the provincial economy.

Time for truth in B.C. treaty talks B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher Three years ago, longtime chief and band administrator Sophie Pierre sought an extension of her term leading the B.C. Treaty Commission and gave a warning. The federal and provincial government should start taking this long and costly effort seriously or “shut ’er down.” Last week Pierre wound up her sixth and final year as chief commissioner on a slightly more hopeful note. This year, the Tla’amin

Nation in the Powell River area and the Yale First Nation in the Fraser Canyon had their treaties proclaimed by Ottawa. They join the Maanulth First Nations on Vancouver Island and the Tsawwassen First Nation in leaving behind the Indian Act and the courts to get on with self-government. Tsawwassen in particular has moved ahead aggressively. Its shopping centre development near the ferry terminal is one of the largest commercial projects in the province right now.

All of these treaties were negotiated despite multiple overlapping territorial claims around them, and similar progress has been made with the Tsimshian First Nations on the North Coast and elsewhere. The need for aboriginal people to work out their overlapping claim issues between themselves was the focus of the commission’s 22nd annual report. In it, former chief commissioners Miles Richardson of the Haida Nation and Steven Point of the Sto:lo Nation added their influential voices, urging aboriginal communities to consider them shared territories, rather than clinging to ancient tribal rivalries. Another hopeful sign

is that after seven years of commissions and studies, the federal government has finally given its negotiators a mandate to negotiate fisheries. This is the main reason why the Tla’amin waited five long years for Ottawa’s blessing after their treaty had been hammered out. This year’s landmark decision of the Supreme Court of Canada, recognizing Tsilhqot’in Nation title in the remote Nemiah Valley, has also got the attention of Victoria and Ottawa. Pierre noted the “flurry of activity” by Premier Christy Clark in seeking reconciliation, which will culminate this month with a formal apology for the hanging

of Tsilhqot’in chiefs 150 years ago. Pierre said this court ruling “should destroy any lingering thoughts that this issue is not of the utmost importance, and provide the necessary investment, both financial and time commitment, to reach satisfactory conclusions.” That’s the good news for B.C.’s thorniest historical problem, the lack of treaties across most of the province. It’s also becoming clearer that the Tsilhqot’in ruling is unique. It’s unlikely to be repeated by most other First Nations, even if they are willing and able to spend the years and millions to enrich lawyers in pursuit of it. Here’s the bad news.

As of this year, the B.C. Treaty Commission has paid out $627 million to First Nations to support treaty negotiations. Most of that is in the form of loans, which are to be repaid out of the cash settlements that Ottawa contributes to settle modern treaties. Pierre acknowledges that some communities are close to completing treaties, but their debt has climbed to near what Ottawa is offering. This would leave them free but broke. Others are just “spinning their wheels” with no real hope of achieving a treaty, Pierre said. The commission is calling for an “exit strategy” for these communities, starting with loan forgiveness that would

allow them to pursue economic activity. There are First Nations, Westbank and Osoyoos prominent among them, which are thriving without treaties. Haida and Klahoose have developed successful forest products businesses as they move toward selfgovernment. Federal and provincial governments must recognize the successes, and the failures. The Cranbrook and District Community Foundation (CDCF) welcomed their new Fund Development Coordinator Jody Jacob to the team this October.

Jody, who was born and raised in Cranbrook, recently relocated with her husband and two children back to her home town after more than 10 years of living away. Following gradua-

tion from Cranbrook’s Mount Baker high school in 2000, Jody earned a journalism degree at Mount Royal University in Calgary, before moving to Kelowna, where she began a career in communications/media relations at UBC’s Okanagan campus. Jody is thrilled to be back home and eager

to get re-acquainted with the community that has always held her heart. More importantly, Jody is looking forward to contributing to Cranbrook’s vitality, health, success and development, through her role as Fund Development Coordinator with the CDCF.

Daffodils

1. What’s in a Name? We commonly refer to flowers of the narcissus variety as daffodils, but are all daffodils narcissus? The American daffodil society claims that all narcissus are daffodils and vice versa. They prefer the term daffodil for all but scientific uses. Other names for daffodils include paperwhites, jonquils and ‘Poet’s Hower’. 2. Greek Origins. The name narcissus is linked to a figure in Greek mythology with the same name. He was said to have been so entranced with his reflection in a pool of water that eventually he fell in and drowned. The first daffodil sprang up from the spot. A more scientific root of the word narcissus is also linked to Greek. It’s stem is the word narke which means ‘to grow numb’ and refers to the effect a narcotic compound in the plant will have when ingested. 3. A Bitter Taste. Not only humans do not appreciate, lycorine, the toxic content of daffodils. Ingested in large quantities it can be fatal. This is the reason squirrels and other rodents will leave the bulbs alone in the ground and deer turn their noses once the friendly flowers start to sprout and bloom in the spring. 4. Keep to Yourself! The toxic sap in daffodils can also be harmful to other flowers. When you cut daffodils to use in the house, it is best to keep them on their own. When arranging them in a vase, do not mix them with other flowers unless the daffodils have been soaking in water for 24 hours. Do not recut the stems as it will re-release the toxin. 5. A Gift of Happiness. It is no wonder that with their cheerful yellow, white or even pink blooms, a gift of daffodils is said to ensure happiness. Remember, however, to always present them in a bunch. The same legend states that while these cheerful flowers will bring good fortune, when given as a single bloom, a daffodil can foretell misfortune instead. 6. Happiness Can’t Wait! In the Chinese tradition, daffodils are connected with good fortune as well. Ancient Chinese legends tell of daffodils bearing cups of gold for the poor but kind. Another legend has it that if a daffodil bulb is forced to bloom during the New Year, it will bring good luck to your home. 7. Hail the National Flower. Daffodils are a part of the national emblem of Wales and it is a custom to wear a daffodil on St. David’s Day in March. The Welsh name for daffodil is cennin Pedr, literally translated as "Peter's Leeks". And in fact, the leek is the other official plant of Wales. 8. Message of Hope. In Canada, the daffodil has served as a symbol of cancer awareness since the 1950's and it is the logo of the Canadian Cancer Society. At fundraising teas at the time, volunteers would decorate tables with daffodils, hoping it would create the feeling of hope that cancer can be beaten. Today, April is Daffodil month and the Society is the world’s largest purchaser of daffodils for its fundraising campaign. 9. It’s What’s Under the Ground. After you plant daffodil bulbs in your garden, there is a good chance they will increase their numbers from year to year. This is mostly due to bulb division, but daffodils can set seed as well. This is less common as daffodils don’t always get pollinated and when you do get seed, they will take a good five years to produce a blooming plant. 10. Not Just a One Colour Wonder. Yellow is the first colour that will come to mind when talking daffodils, but there are now a host of other colours and more being added every year. There are also many shapes, from single to double-blooming and split cup (butterfly) daffodils. A gorgeous novelty variety is ‘Vanilla Peach’. This butterfly narcissus has soft yellow petals with a coral coloured split cup in the middle.

nomination and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations... little wonder, the buzz around John Reischman and The Jaybirds continues to grow. Like the mandolinist at its helm, the group fashions a stylish, elegant take on bluegrass that is at once innovative and unadorned, sophisticated and stripped-down, happily old-fashioned, yet unselfconsciously new. To see their live show is to believe it. A genial blend of storytelling and side-show humour provides the backdrop to their studied performance of original songs, instrumentals, and newly arranged traditional material. Hailing from the variegated ranks of the contemporary West Coast acoustic music scene, each of these ‘birds’ has certainly earned his wings: the list of projects they have contributed to over the years is nothing less than a short list of acoustic power houses. Together, their seamless ensemble work makes for one of the freshest, most tasteful band-sounds on the

folk and bluegrass circuit today. With a fourth critically-acclaimed album and expanded touring schedule, John Reischman and the Jaybirds are a top-flight band delivering a truly fresh blend of original songs and instrumentals, old-time heritage, and bluegrass power. Featuring nine new songs and tunes from all five founding band members, Stellar Jays is the latest in a series of CDs to win rave reviews for a trademark, oldtime-infused bluegrass sound that respects tradition while advancing the music. The nomination of Stellar Jays for two 2007 Canadian Folk Music Awards follows praise such as this from Nashville Public Radio: “A masterpiece — a fascinating and freshsounding collection of tunes that incorporate the best elements of bluegrass and old-time into a killer new sound.” The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 or $30 for members. Call the box office at 250426-7006 or visit www. keycitytheatre.com.

The public is invited to attend the public information open house regarding the ‘City of Cranbrook Cease Fluoridation Bylaw No. 3799, 2014’ electoral assent question as part of the 2014 Municipal Election. When: Thursday October 23, 2014 – 7:00pm to 9:00pm MT Where: Manual Training School, 1212 2nd Street North, next to the Cranbrook Public Library The City of Cranbrook is informing residents about the water system and water fluoridation and is hosting this public open house. All are invited to this free event. Beginning promptly at 7:00pm, Canadian health experts on both sides of the fluoride debate will address the public with the presentation being moderated by David Walls, President and CEO of the College of the Rockies. The speakers will be available to meet the public and the media to respond to questions for the remainder of the evening. The speakers are: • Dr. Alastair Nicoll of the BC Dental Association and an area dentist who will discuss the advantages of adding fluoride to the public water system. • Dr. James Beck, Professor Emeritus for Medical Biophysics at the University of Calgary and coauthor of ‘ The Case Against Fluoride’, who is a vocal advocate for removing fluoride from the water system. The City of Cranbrook’s website also provides public information about the fluoride electoral assent question, the history of water fluoridation in Cranbrook and a place to learn more about fluoride with links to studies, reports and opinions around the pros and cons of water fluoridation. Christ the Servant

Hugs: The friendliest service in town is the staff in Safeway and the produce and flower department top them all. Thank you.

Hugs: Thanks to those folks that came to the first “Kootenay Auto Show” on Saturday October 11. Great vendors and great show.

Hugs: It’s a joy to cross the railway tracks now. Thank you to the crew that did such a GREAT job.

Hugs: Thank you to the Sand Creek Seniors group that puts on a great breakfast first Sunday of each month. Amazing food and great conversations.

Slugs: To the lady who sold a senior citizen a car that is in such bad shape, she can’t afford to fix it. Thanks to you she is out of money she had to borrow and still has no car. Hope you can live with yourself for doing this. Just remember “what goes around, comes around”. Slugs: Huge Slugs to the person who left a note taped to the windshield of my white pick up on Oct. 4th in the Walmart parking lot. Just because my truck is white doesn’t mean I was the one that marked your poorly parked, newly painted vehicle, please note the returned sarcasm, and have a good day. P.S. Did not appreciate your note. Slugs: Huge slugs to a certain Flu Clinic. After calling for information about their drop-in flu shot program and being told the best times to drop-in, I have made 3 trips to the site to be denied the vaccination. 2 times, the person just said “not now”, and the third time said they were too busy. In none of these conversations was there any apology, empathy, or sense of being valued as a customer. Perhaps this site should offer flu shots by appointment if it is such a bother for their staff. Oh...and some customer service training wouldn’t be a bad idea either. Taking my business elsewhere.

Slugs: To all the speeders that continue to speed past the back of Mt. Baker. It is a 30km zone. Slow down!!! Slugs: To those recycling folks that just cannot seem to bend over and pick up the stuff that falls out of the bins-when you are right there, bend over, lift and put into the bin…it’s much neater. Hugs: A huge hug goes out to all the candidates in the upcoming municipal election. Looks like it is going to be a race for council seats! Love an interesting election. Slugs: To the people who tailgate a Kimberley commuter who drives to work in the wee hours. Sure they are only going 70 80 km per hour, but c’mon, there are plenty of places to pass. Besides, if you think the person is such a lousy driver, why are you putting your life in their hands by tailgating? Hugs: To the bantam tier 3 team for hosting an incredible parent night on Friday the 10th, fun was had by everyone! Hugs: Huge hugs to the Kootenay Advertiser for putting on a fabulous Motor Show on Saturday at WFP- a job well done!

Send a hug to someone you love If you have a Hug or a Slug...we’d like to hear it. Simply email us at shannon@kootenayadvertiser.com with your short quips, compliments or complaints. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is you keep it tasteful. Hugs and Slugs will be printed as space allows, if we miss yours check back next week and you will be bumped to the start of the list. You can also drop by a written submission to our office at 1510 2nd Street N. or call Shannon at (250)489-3455 or 1-800-665-2382

By Rob Rothwell

New York, NY – Avant garde, the SoHo District of New York City on the densely populated island of Manhattan is home to a culture of creativity, artistry, and some of the best highend shopping in the world. SoHo is an ideal locale for the launch of a flagship vehicle from a premium automaker that aspires to many of the same ideals as those driving the district’s renaissance. Infiniti’s flagship Q70 sedan has undergone re-engineering

to improve refinement and road characteristics while also exhibiting a striking design refortified end to end. Perhaps most noteworthy for 2015 is the availability of a segmentexclusive long wheelbase version denoted by an “L” affixed to the Q70’s badging. With an additional 150 mm of stretch inserted into its rear seating area, the Q70L’s leather-lined cabin supplies limo-like legroom to its rearseat luminary, and is the only sedan within its segment to offer expanded real estate. a CEO may feel at home in the rear quarters of the Q70L, family buyers are bound to enjoy the stretch as well, which eases the burden of inserting kids into car seats. Despite benefits of a lengthened cabin, the standard Q70 is expected to lead sales. And based on my day of driving both examples through the lush beauty of historic New Jersey, it was the regularlength car that delivered a perfect balance between sportiness and luxury. And aghast I should say this, but the V6 engine in the Q70 Sport was my power plant of preference unless finding myself in the passing lane with tarmac running short. Left of the centre-line is where eight cylinders effortlessly outmatches six. Otherwise, the V6 is an exceptionally refined power plant, which pierced the bubble of contempt I harbour for V6 engines of less polish. Displacing 3.7 litres, the DOHC V6 engine develops 330 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s rated under the government’s revised standards at 13.2L/100km city and 9.6L/100km highway. Infiniti’s liquid-smooth 5.6L V8 engine jacks performance considerably with the production of 416 horsepower and 414 lb.-ft. of torque, however, economy

Infiniti’s Q70L 4-door flagship is the only long wheelbase sedan in its segment. slips to 15L/100km city and 10.2L/100km highway. Both engines are mated to Infiniti’s seven-speed automatic transmission combined with all-wheel-drive (AWD), which is a Canada-only conformity. I’m a proponent of AWD, so this limitation gets traction with me. Final in the power triad is a hybrid arrangement utilizing a 3.5L V6 engine combined with a 50 kW electric motor. Total available output is pegged at 360 horsepower – directed exclusively to the rear wheels. I didn’t have an opportunity to drive the Q70 Hybrid, which is rated at a thrifty 8.0L/100km city and 6.9L/100km highway. Beautifully stitched leather and genuine Japanese Ash ap-

From the days of the storied Q45 sedan introduced in 1990 to today’s Q70 flagship, Infiniti cabins have always been top contenders in both quality and engineering. Infiniti emphasizes userfriendliness in the functionality of its technology and the layout of controls and switchgear, and such is the case in the new Q70. Yet there’s more tech here than ever before, and it’s largely designed to prevent collisions and protect occupants. Infiniti’s Safety Shield is the constellation of these programs. Highlighted among them is predictive forward collision warning paired with intelligent brake assist. With a few quick seat and mirror adjustments, I was hurled into the thick of Manhattan traffic headed to the Holland Tunnel, which carries vehicles under the Hudson River on which Captain ‘Sully” Sullenberger safely landed his Airbus A320 after losing both engines due to multiple bird strikes. Far less stressful for me was the challenge of coping with Manhattan’s congested roads, which was made remarkably manageable by the Q70’s quiet cabin and its ability to blunt the incessant horn honking that is NYC. Main takeaways from our New Jersey jaunt and return to New York via Bear Mountain State Park focus on the Q70’s underpinnings. The retuned suspension exploits the sweet spot between comfort and handling characteristics without generating suspension noise. In fact, the entire chassis feels unified and composed while delivering lively, engaging handling dynamics. Particularly worthy of praise is the Q70’s retuned steering, which delivers bright, clear messaging from street level. The 2015 Infiniti Q70 and Q70L truly deserve the Big Apple’s spotlight. Though pricing has yet to be finalized for the Canadian market, expect it to be highly competitive, especially when Infiniti’s Safety Shield technology and the use of all-wheel-drive are factored into the mix.

Forgotten 1970s classics cribbed so many styling cues from Ferrari. It was actually a very good-looking rear-wheeldrive sport coupe that was available with a variety of engines, including three V8s, a 262, 305 and 350. The latter two were only for California and high-altitude markets, but the 305 with 140hp was the one to have, with the other two engines making 110 and 120 hp. While more than 700,000 Monzas were built, very few seem to have survived. 2. Opel GT – The Opel GT sported mini C3 Corvette styl-

Power came from Opel’s optional 1.9-liter “high-cam” four-cylinder engine, with the smaller 1.1-liter standard but rarely seen in the U.S. Performance with the 1.9-liter was quite decent, with the car solidly outperforming cars like the MGB GT and the carbureted BMW 2002. Buick dealers were happy to have the car in the U.S., as it gave them a sportier product with which to lure young buyers into the

first car to carry the Grand Am name (which was an amalgam of Grand Prix and Trans Am) was a big, thirsty, traditional American personal luxury car with a few Euro touches in the seating department and in the real wood interior accents. It also had a soft Enduro nose that gave it a unique and sporty look compared to its more traditional A-body cousins, the Buick Century and Olds Cutlass Supreme. The ’73 model was the swan song of real horsepower with 400 and 455 engines available that both made well over 200hp. There was even a rather unpopular manual transmission option. The Oil Crisis put sales into a tail spin, but the unique sight of a Grand Am today can give still another reason to miss Pontiac.

are consistent and repeatable and includes the use of standardized fuels, test cycles and calculations. The underlying objective is to give a Canadian consumer making a new vehicle purchase decision an accurate and reliable way to compare fuel consumption.

†

The new fuel consumption rating system

and the new five-cycle test was designed to better simulate modern driving. That said, and also as before, an owner’s actual on-road fuel consumption is still likely to be different, although closer to the new government test numbers. Real life fuel consumption not only varies depending on how and where you drive, it can also change with traffic, the weather, after dark and a bunch of other less obvious factors. If you want to check how your current vehicle would fare (and compare) in the five-cycle test, Natural Resources Canada (nrcan.gc.ca) has an online calculation tool that gives approximate fuel economy numbers for vehicles going all the way back to 1995. This is the web link: http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/fcrrcf/public/index-e.cfm The more fuel a vehicle burns is directly related to the amount of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, it pumps out the tailpipe. So, not only does a more fuel efficient vehicle cost less to operate, it also has reduced environmental impact. Fuel economy now transcends the small car market and is an important concern for buyers in just about every vehicle market segment. It’s also why fuel economy has become an increasingly important in the marketing of new vehicles, especially in the high-volume market segments. The car business is a highly competitive one and, as you might expect, auto makers try to build vehicles that do well, and get low numbers, in the government fuel economy test. A few have even overstepped the credibility line (by mistake, of course) and have agreed to compensate vehicle owners, most notably Hyundai and Kia a couple of years ago, Ford and Lincoln more recently. Major technological changes are also happening in the fuel economy race. Smaller and more efficient gasoline engines are available, hybrid vehicle sales are taking off, plug-in hybrid vehicles are becoming more common and the pure electric vehicle is a competitive production reality. So, even the term “fuel consumption” may become obsolete, sometime in the future. Right now, however, if you walk into a new car dealership showroom, you’ll probably find both 2014 and 2015 editions of the same model vehicle for sale, side-by-side. If you don’t notice the asterisked note under the EnerGuide fuel consumption figure on the 2015, it’s easy to assume that it’s a less fuel efficient vehicle and that’s almost certainly not correct. The 2015 EnerGuide fuel consumption figure is simply more realistic and closer to what you’re likely to experience during day-to-day driving in the real world. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca
