New pastor happy to be working in Lacombe Marco Ste-Marie is looking forward to building community relationships

L

acombe is often referred to as a City with a welcoming, small town feel.

For some people, that is exactly the kind of dichotomy they are looking for. Pastor Marco Ste-Marie, a new pastor at St. Andrew’s United Church, is one of them.

Ste-Marie said he actually wasn’t particularly interested in moving to Central Alberta when he applied for the job posting for St. Andrew’s United Church. However, he said speaking to some of the members of the search committee during his interview changed his mind.

“When the interview was over I said I want to be there, I really want to be there,” said Ste-Marie. He added it was the people of St. Andrew’s who brought him to the area.

“I thought if the people in Lacombe were like the people at St. Andrew’s, it cannot be a bad choice.”

Ste-Marie grew up in a suburb of Montreal and has been a pastor for four years. Before becoming a pastor, Ste-Marie had often volunteered with his church and wanted to start doing such work full-time.

“I felt it was my calling, really,” he said.

Ste-Marie said his favourite part of being a pastor is building relationships and growing with other people.

“I grow myself in spirituality and with God and I see people around me growing, it’s that mutual growth in spirituality I guess,” he said. He added that he isn’t overly fond of the number of meetings he needs to attend as a pastor, but the meetings are a necessary part of the job and good things often come out of them.

When he got to come to Lacombe for his final interview, any still existing hesitation Ste-Marie had about moving west quickly left his mind. He said he found the atmosphere a little more open than that which he grew up in.

“I love Alberta,” said Ste-Marie.

Ste-Marie went on to say that he liked the small-town feel of Lacombe and while he is living in Red Deer right now, he still prefers it to the big-city feel of Montreal. He said he likes knowing his neighbours and sharing stories with people when he meets them.

“That’s really what makes me like this part of Alberta.”

Ste-Marie had one close friend in Red Deer that he used to live with while in seminary. Aside from that, he didn’t know many people in Lacombe or even Alberta aside from a few other friends he made in seminary, but that didn’t discourage him from taking the job and starting a new life here.

Now that he has been living in Central

Alberta and working in Lacombe for three months, Ste-Marie said he finds his new life very enjoyable. He said the feeling of warmth he gets here and the laid back attitudes of people leave him feeling somewhat tranquil.

“I’m naturally a hyper and very energetic person so I can become stressed very easily,” said Ste-Marie. “Coming here has been calming me down a lot.”

He added that he plans on staying for quite awhile and will have plenty of time to figure everything out.

“I want to be here as long as I can. For as long as God calls me to be here, I will stay here.”

He added that his first challenge will be adjusting to the culture of western Canada and in particular Alberta.

“I think it’s going to take me a few years just to get the culture and the social identity and the social environment and grasp it,” he said. “Not only here in Lacombe but in Alberta period. It’s really different.”

While he is still settling into his new surroundings, Ste-Marie already has a few ideas in regards to what work he would like to do here in Lacombe. For now, he said he would like to focus his goals on maintaining what the church is already doing. He said the church community of St. Andrew’s United Church already has strong ties to the rest of the community of Lacombe. SteMarie wants to sure those ties not only remain but continue to grow.

Ste-Marie commented on how the St. Andrew’s United Church building is also used by several community groups outside of the congregation that worships there on Sundays.

He said he wants to continue that involvement and build on it.

“They are already very well established,” said Ste-Marie. “It’s one thing to have them, it’s another thing to keep relationships with them and build rapport with them.”

He added that he would like to see more groups make use of St. Andrew’s in the future as well. For example, he said he would like to create an LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) support group at the church.

“As I understand it’s kind of a hard thing in Central Alberta to be LGBT so that is something I think I would like to do in a couple years.”

He added he would like to form other support or discussion groups as well - places where people who feel somewhat isolated within their communities can go in order to feel included. Powerful mental health symposium in Lacombe this month

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express As more discussion emerges around the topic of mental health and wellbeing, Wolf Creek Public Schools will host a symposium on the topic later this month.

On Oct. 25th, the community of Lacombe is invited to the 2014 Wolf Creek Mental Health Symposium, located at the Ecole Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School. Registration is $125 and offers access to more than 15 sessions and a keynote speaker presentation in the name of awareness for mental health issues.

“We’ve lined up several speakers from across the provinces, as well as within the Wolf Creek School Division that are experts in the mental health field. We have a variety of topics that we’re offering that day to Wolf Creek staff as well as community agencies, parents and just the public, whomever would like to attend,” said District Social Worker for Wolf Creek Public Schools Barb Reaney.

“This event is being presented to bring awareness and to reduce stigma. More

importantly, it is to provide knowledge to help people better manage potential or developing mental health problems for themselves, colleagues, family members, students and friends.”

The information will be presented on a variety of topics including trauma, executive functioning, ‘the conflict cycle’, selfharm, suicide, reactive attachment disorder, anxiety and addictions. Presenters include psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health therapists and representatives from community agencies that address mental health issues.

In each Wolf Creek Public School there is a social worker. Those social workers are managed by Reaney and have been collecting statistics on what areas of mental health support could benefit from more attention. She said the stats indicated the areas aforementioned, and that those are the areas that a new mental health initiative will address.

“We decided that we wanted to bring in an initiative to focus on mental health. It has a huge impact on students, we’ve been working lots with community partners and we have a fantastic relationship with them and that’s really added to the initiative as well,” said Reaney.

want to lessen the impact on students as much as we can.”

The Wolf Creek School board and division have been working hard to bring in presenters with a wide scope of information. The goal of the symposium is to reduce stigma attached to the issue, promote awareness and discussion and to help equip adults with the skills they need to assist youths and children who are struggling with mental health issues.

The skills and the information that will be presented are part of a plethora of information available through community

resources, online or in person.

“We have a committee of volunteers who have decided that this is where they want to contribute and that’s been fantastic. We have a really great line-up of speakers so I hope that we get a good outcome for sure because the learning will be fantastic,” she said.

“We would not be able to put this event on without the support from our board and our school division.”

New condo subdivision coming to Blackfalds

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express At a regular meeting on Oct. 14th, the Town of Blackfalds council unanimously approved a new subdivision to be developed by Tricon Developments Inc. at the corner of Vista Trail and Womacks Road.

Tricon has applied to construct nine eight-plex units in the development and as part of the development requested approval of a bareland condo subdivision to develop four parcels within the condo property on the land Planning and Development Manager Terry Topolnitsky said in his presentation.

He added that notification had been sent to

all the affected agencies (Lacombe County, ATCO Pipelines, Fortis Alberta, Alberta Transportation and the Town departments) with no objections, although the Energy Resources Conservation Board noted there was an abandoned well in that location.

Topolnistky said the purpose of the bareland condo subdivision was just to subdivide the land and aid the developer in figuring out its finances for the project.

Council approved the subdivision unanimously with little discussion other than a few concerns regarding whether or not there would be confusion regarding the responsibilities of the condo asso-

ciation versus the Town on matters such as waste management.

Councillor Richard Poole and Mayor Melodie Stol wanted to make sure there would not be complications when it came to garbage removal and that residents would be able to participate in the Town’s recycling program.

Topolnitsky and Director of Infrastructure Preston Weran assured council that processes are in place to prevent such confusions.

“It’s not an issue at all,” said Topolnitsky.

Stantec helps to Light up the Night in Lacombe the new partnership.

“We’re excited about this opportunity to support an event that brings joy to a community where we live and work,” said Wlad.

“Many of our staff live in and around Lacombe and we’ve seen how significant this event has been for the community’s holiday celebrations in the last three years.”

Todd Simenson, senior principal for Stantec’s Water Group in Red Deer, spoke briefly at the announcement saying that he is happy to continue his 12year working relationship with Lacombe as a sponsor of the winter festival.

On Oct. 14th, the City of Lacombe announced that Edmonton-based global design firm Stantec would be the new presenting sponsor of the Light up the Night festival from 2014-2016.

As part of the sponsorship, Stantec presented the City of Lacombe with a $15,000 cheque, funds that will help support and grow the already popular winter festival.

Mayor Steve Christie said he was excited to have Stantec on board.

“I believe that this partnership is a recipe for success and on behalf of council I thank (Stantec) for their commitment to Lacombe and for helping to kick off the holiday season in style,” Christie stated in a release.

In his brief address during the announcement, Christie thanked Stantec for their contribution and spoke of how their commitment will ensure that Light up the Night continues to grow and be sustainable.

“With the popularity of this growing festival, there comes a need for financial commitments and a need for sponsors to carry on this remarkable event so I am pleased that Stantec has stepped up,” said Christie. “I’m thrilled to accept this gift from Stantec which sets a foundation on which we can build and ensure future success.”

‘Rocktober’ takes over Lacombe this month

Silver Cove presents Rocktober for 11 days. The show will feature sandstone carvings from Kenya, Lapis Lazuli minerals from Afghanistan and thousands of other beads, stones, spheres and décor to choose from.

“This actually started very small. We had a lot of requests from customers to see everything that we

The team at Silver Cove has been dedicating hours and sorting through pieces of gems, mineral, carved stones, jewelry pieces and fossils in preparation of the event.

Kiosks, multiple storefronts and other displays will take over the Lacombe Mall for the event. Each room without a lease has been temporarily taken over with goods. A special kids’ area will also be incorporated into the event to promote a family-friendly environment, and schools will receive free admission to promote the study of rocks, fossils and minerals.

STAR division announces provincial results The testing and evaluation process is a key component in evaluating student learning and ensuring instructional techniques are constantly adapting to meet the needs of students. Each year, students in Grades 3, 6 and 9 write provincial achievement tests (PATs) – students in Grade 3 are tested in language arts and math, and students in Grades 6 and 9 write tests in language arts, math, science and social studies.

High school students are also evaluated in core Grade 12 courses, writing provincial diploma exams, counting towards 50% of their final course mark in each subject.

Released this week, PAT and diploma exam results continue to tell a success story for St. Thomas Aquinas Roman (STAR) Catholic Schools, officials say.

Grade 6 English language arts and science students exceeded the provincial standard of excellence and math and science students in the same grade exceeded the provincial acceptable standard.

In Grade 9, students exceeded the provincial acceptable standard in all four exams and exceeded the provincial standard of excellence in English, language arts and social studies.

High school students exceeded provincial standards of excellence in English 30-1 and 30-2, Mathematics 30-1 and Science 30 diploma exams while high school students exceeded the provincial acceptable standard in English 30-1 and 30-2, Mathematics 30-1 and 30-2, Science 30, Physics 30, Chemistry 30 and Social Studies 30-1.

OPINION Long road ahead for senior care Alberta has a long way to go when it comes to improving its long-term senior care facilities.

Alberta Auditor General Merwan Saher said while the situation has improved since the long-term care system was last audited in 2005, he has taken fire at the monitoring methods used to ensure Alberta’s seniors are being properly cared for.

Methods used by Alberta Health Services to monitor senior care don’t go far enough and don’t cover all the bases, Saher said when he released his report. For example, inspections are announced months in advance and don’t include checking in to see if individual care plans for seniors are being followed.

Saher couldn’t be more right when he says there is still a long road to go when it comes to longterm senior care. If there aren’t even procedures in place to make sure the 14,000 seniors with care plans are having those plans followed, how can we even know AHS and the staff at these facilities are doing their jobs?

Such inspections also need to have more depth, inspectors need to speak with the actual residents

of these long-term care facilities rather than sit in boardrooms reading policy binders as Saher said they are doing now. Follow ups also need to be put in place to make sure that any recommendations made as result of such inspections are adhered to.

It is important for Alberta to care for its seniors. They deserve the right to quality care.

In fact, they deserve it more than most. They have already put in their time working, raising families and improving our communities. They have more than earned the right to the best care possible.

Health Minister Stephan Mandel said that long-term care is at the top of his priority list and he has accepted all of Saher’s recommendations, including implementing drop-in surprise visits to inspect long-term care facilities. Mandel has also said a number of initiatives to improve that care will be announced next week.

Sounds like the government is on the right track, but don’t forget, this government is famous for improvements in baby steps, stopping frequently to celebrate their success and loudly boasting of their

achievements. Mandel can’t afford to do this. Mandel and the rest of the Alberta government is still in the process of re-building our trust in the Tories.

If he really wants to show progress, he will continue improving this system without stopping to

brag. Saher has said that Alberta has improved its long-term senior care services in the last decade. If that is really true, it’s time for the government to hunker down and build off that momentum and not stop to give themselves a pat on the back.

I have often said that politics would be better if there was less politics involved.

Let me explain what I mean.

Politics can be defined as the practice of conducting political affairs. That is; the creation and management of policy that dictates how the business of a government is run. In short – the job we elect our politicians to do.

But, politics can also be defined as taking advantage of a political situation in order to manipulate or exploit another person, group or idea in order to further one’s own agenda. More commonly referred to as ‘playing politics’.

Which is exactly the kind of game going on in the Alberta legislature right now. Despite the substantial changes made by Premier Jim Prentice, Alberta’s opposition parties continue to dismiss him as another newly elected Progressive Conservative leader doing the same song and dance as his predecessors.

The trouble is, Alberta’s opposition parties could be right. We have no way of knowing.

So far, Prentice has made a lot of changes the citizens of this prov-

VOSSEN ince can celebrate and made good on a lot of his promises. So far.

But he isn’t the first premier to win an election with promises and not even the first to act on at least a few after being elected. At this point, no one knows if Prentice is going to continue being the accountable premier he said he would be.

However, we do know what Alberta’s opposition parties are going to do. The clue is in the name.

You aren’t going to find Alberta’s opposition parties agreeing with anything the premier or the government does.

Recently, Prentice announced his plan to implement an accountability act that would do away with the ‘sweetheart’ severance packages for departing staff, minimize sole-sourced deals and put further restrictions on any sole-sourced deals that do still exist.

It’s a plan that, on paper, lives

up to its name. Still, that hasn’t stopped Alberta NDP leader Brian Mason from criticizing Prentice for not enacting the plan until after making certain appointments (like that of Jay Hill, Prentice’s PC leadership campaign co-chair, as one of Alberta’s new trade representatives).

More recently, Prentice slammed former Premier Alison Redford for her ‘Building Alberta’ branding campaign, saying the seven-figure cost to drive 300 signs into the ground across the province does not justify itself or serve as a good measure of performance. However, Prentice said he would not remove the signs as he did not want to spend further taxpayer dollars on a campaign he has already stated was not worthwhile.

This drew further criticism from Mason, with the NDP leader saying Prentice plans to reutilize them in some fashion in the future, like affixing new information on them to deliver updates, which Mason seems to think is just as bad as plastering the signs, which are dominated by the colours of the PC Party, all over Alberta.

Again, it’s the oppositions’ job

not to agree with the government.

But that’s what makes this frustrating. We all know if Prentice had spent the money to remove the signs, he would have been criticized for wasting more money on the campaign.

This is the problem that playing politics creates. Our new premier is in a catch-22, it doesn’t matter what he does, someone is going to tell him it was the wrong decision, or that he is just trying to put a new face on a broken party to gain popularity (though why that’s a bad thing, I don’t understand).

Either way, Alberta’s opposition parties will use Prentice’s decisions as leverage to gain more support for their own political agendas. Which brings me, finally, to the real victims of the political game. Us. The electorate.

If we decide to believe that Prentice is what he promises to be, the complete opposite of Redford and his ‘song and dance’ does turn out to be a big charade, we played right into his hands. If we decide to stand with the opposition, we risk losing a premier that could actually do a lot of good for our province. news@lacombeexpress.com

City moves forward with MDP process

Last week, the City of Lacombe held an open house seeking public input into the Municipal Development Plan.

Planning and Development Manager Lyla Peter said the City saw tremendous support and a great turnout for the open house.

One of the purposes of the open house was to see if the goals of the City and the MDP aligned with those of residents.

Peter said that what they have found so far is encouraging and suggested that is the case.

Now, Peter said the challenge is delivering on all of those goals.

She said that while the MDP will not necessarily prioritize goals and will work towards all goals each day, sometimes some goals may be covered more than

others. “It is challenging, we aspire for these huge goals and we set out the policies to achieve but sometimes choices have to be made,” said Peter.

While individual concerns among residents differ from person to person and shift over time, Peter said that there are some themes arising from input received from the community so far.

Recently, the City released its report outlining the result of the Lacombe retail survey.

Peter said it was a fairly big undertaking by the City to conduct the retail survey and as such commercial growth within the City is one of the themes arising from the community’s input into the MDP. “Generally, I think people want to see more commercial activity,” Peter said. She added there appears to be a desire to see more box stores and chain stores in the community in particular.

Another of the themes emerging from the public input process is that of housing.

Peter said last year the City had a housing needs assessment done which determined that there is a dire need for more afford-

able housing and more multi-family housing options in Lacombe.

“WE WANT EVERYBODY TO SEE WHAT INFORMATION WE ARE GETTING AND FROM THERE THEY CAN SEE HOW THAT INFORMATION TRANSLATES INTO, ULTIMATELY, POLICY.” LYLA PETER At the open house last week, the City asked residents how they should go about delivering those housing needs.

Peter said that a need has been pointed out in Lacombe and it is important to ensure that residents understand why the City has to deliver different types of housing and what the consequences are if it does not.

“We want to make sure that the community is on board with that goal,” said Peter.

Transportation was another theme Peter mentioned.

She said that residents at the open house had concerns regarding street congestion, something that is often heard at public hear-

ings whenever a new development begins in the City.

In addition to these major themes, the City also discussed topics such as taxes, the local economy and job markets with those who attended.

Peter said that all of the information received through the public input process would be considered when policy regarding the MDP is being written.

Currently, all the information received through the public consultation process is being compiled by the consultants working with the City on the MDP. Peter said they have handed this part of the process over to the consultants in order to maintain transparency and so that the feedback will be viewed objectively by a third party.

Once the data is compiled, it will be released back to the City in a report.

Peter said that report will also be made available to the public.

“We want everybody to see what information we are getting and from there they can see how that information translates into, ultimately, policy,” said Peter.

Tip on how to stay safe in the hospital Luckily, I’ve only been admitted to hospital for surgery on two occasions.

But when it happened I had serious concerns. The big one was, will I develop a complication during my stay that I didn’t have on arrival? So, what can be done to prevent this?

What’s more common are errors of medication.

You’re right. Being a surgeon helps, but here’s a tip for you. If you’re lucky enough to know a scrub nurse, one that assists at surgery, he or she will be able to direct you to the right hands.

Some patients make a terrible mistake by letting emotions determine their choice. They want a particular hospital so friends and family can visit them after the operation. Family is important, but not as vital as traveling a few hours to a hospital and surgeon better qualiďŹ ed.

Remember, the more complicated the surgery, such as brain aneurysm or esophageal malignancy, the more you need a surgeon who is doing a number of these operations every year. As the saying goes, ‘practice makes perfect.’ My second worry was the risk of hospital infection. Studies show in North America what’s called ‘central line infections’ are a primary concern. Central line infections are those that occur when patients are receiving antibiotics, medication or nutrition by intravenous needle. This causes up to 30% of the 100,000 deaths from infection every year.

City launches third annual light exchange program

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The City of Lacombe is once again helping residents be more efficient in the holiday season.

This week, the City began its third annual Christmas Light exchange, a program designed to reduce Lacombe’s energy footprint and help Lacombe residents save both power and money.

Guy Lapointe, community and economic development manager for the City of Lacombe, said there was a quite a crowd gathered at City Hall when the exchange program began Tuesday morning.

“There was already a line-up,” said Lapointe. He added that each year the City has expanded and offered more lights for exchange, but they are still out of lights within a few short weeks of the program’s start.

To participate in the lights exchange program, bring in two strings of old, incandescent bulbs and receive one set of brand new energy-efficient LED

lights. Participants can exchange for as many sets of LED lights as they have adults in their home, but must trade twice as many sets of incandescent bulbs.

Only incandescent bulbs are accepted as part of the exchange, said Lapointe.

He added the program is only open to residents of Lacombe.

Lapointe said typically, the program is meant for the larger outdoor lights rather than the smaller indoor ones but both kinds of bulbs are accepted.

Conservation is an issue in the public mind currently, and switching from incandescent bulbs is one way to cut down on the power residents consume during the holiday season.

At a time of year where excess use of power because of Christmas lights, Christmas baking and other season activities tends to make power bills climb, it also helps residents save money.

year, the second year of the program, $2,000 worth of lights were exchanged.

As sustainability is the point of the program, the incandescent lights are then recycled. Lapointe said the bulbs are removed and used in art and craft projects like Art in the

Park and the wires are used as scrap metal. Last year, the City recycled over 250 strands of incandescent lights.

The City decided to offer this program three years ago after seeing successful programs operate in other communities.

Debate over child to supervisor ratio at Abbey Centre

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express After conducting a policy review survey with users of the Abbey Centre, Blackfalds council is considering changing the child to supervisor ratio at the facility.

During Tuesday’s meeting council heard a presentation regarding a policy review survey for four policies at the Abbey Centre.

In the survey, the public was asked questions regarding four policies; the stroller times on the Cottonwood Meadows Running Track, age of use for the track, children to supervisor ratio and age of use for the child minding program.

In his presentation to council, Community Services Director Sean Barnes said that 50% of the 313 people surveyed responded ‘no’ to all four policy changes and after much discussion in previous recreation board meetings, administration was recommending no change to any policies at this time but to conduct a full review of policies after the Abbey Centre had been operating for one year.

However, not all of council agreed.

Councillor Richard Poole said he knew of at least two families who had questioned the need for

the current 4:1 ratio in the Abbey Centre play area. He added council has heard feedback from similar facilities in Red Deer where there is a 6:1 ratio and Blackfalds’ schools where there is also a 6:1 ratio.

“I have trouble with this recommendation going forward,” said Poole. He added he was concerned that groups, particularly organized clubs for school aged children, would face difficulties using the Abbey Centre with the current ratio.

Mayor Melodie Stol had similar thoughts.

She said the current 4:1 policy at the Abbey Centre contradicts some of the goals outlined in the community needs assessment, the project out of which the Abbey Centre was born. She mentioned the provincial government has a standard child care ratio of 6:1 for day home providers and that making the Abbey Centre child to supervisor ratio 4:1 did not make sense especially when the community needs assessment also said there was a need for more daycare providers in the community.

“The two to me just don’t quite line up,” said Stol. She added she appreciated the process administration and the recreation board had gone through to come for-

ward with the recommendation and also said she realized she may be unaware of some other negative consequences of changing the ratio to 6:1.

“Is there something out there that I’m not seeing?”

He went on to say the pool’s 4:1 ratio is more difficult for council to change without having further safety concerns and if the rest of the facility had a 6:1 ratio, it would cause issues for those who use other features of the Abbey Centre and then tried to use the pool.

“You are going to cause more problems going that route than we are going 4:1 universal,” said Barnes. “You will have a problem, a safety problem.”

Poole said he understood the concerns of administration, but thought the issue of non-universal ratios between the swimming pool and the rest of the facility could be addressed through signage.

He added he realized not all who used the pool would read the signs, but supervisors needed to take responsibility for such oversights. Furthermore, Poole pointed out the swimming pool only operates about three months of the year.

Stol added if there were significant safety concerns about going to a 6:1 ratio in the areas of the Abbey Centre other than the pool, she would be more inclined to support the recommendation.

However she felt that universality, while a good idea from an operational perspective, did not justify making it difficult for the entire community to utilize the facility.

“I don’t know how that supports some of the goals we have identified as a council,” said Stol.

Councillor Ray Olfert sided with Poole and Stol.

“I know multiple families that have five kids,” he said. “They can’t go in there with just one parent. That’s not right. We built this facility for everybody to enjoy.”

The policy for the minimum age of a supervisor at the Abbey Centre was also discussed.

Councillor Dean Wigmore said he supports the recommendation not to change the ratio because the minimum age of a supervisor at the Abbey Centre is 13. Were the Town to change the child to supervisor ratio to 6:1, a 13-yearold could then be in charge of six other children.

Poole said he still did not support the recommendation because he saw the supervisor age and child to supervisor ratio as two separate problems.

He did say however that he would be willing to have a discussion regarding the acceptable age for supervisors at the Abbey Centre or having a different child to supervisor ratio for non-adult supervisors.

Barnes cautioned council on referring the item back to the recreation board saying the results of the survey suggested the majority of the public desired no change.

Therefore, were council to change the policy, they might be doing so against the wishes of the public.

“If 72 per cent said let’s change it to 6:1, we wouldn’t be having this discussion,” said Barnes. news@lacombeexpress.com

The importance of connecting with your neighbours This year marked the inaugural year of Neighbourhood Life in Central Alberta.

ABMA This included the neighbourhood life trailer BBQ that played host to over 15 neighbourhood block parties that spurred on much needed connections.

It seems that the old fashioned neighbourly instincts have fallen to the wayside, much to the surprise of many.

Loneliness was one symptom that surprised those who lived a few houses down.

And just after someone told me that, “It’s different in the smaller communities such as Lacombe and

Blackfalds,” we found two neighbours who have lived down the road from each other for 18 years and had never met.

Perhaps the remote operated garage door and the 60-inch HDTV have played a role in our ‘unfriending’ our neighbour without even noticing. Possibly, we have taken on the attitude that we can afford to live without our neighbours, so why bother?

The hard working family needs to get ahead, therefore, the work week is longer (after all, ‘busy’ is the status symbol), or perhaps multiple jobs are required?

That’s the case with many I have met in the block parties that took place in Blackfalds and Lacombe. It is true for my family as well.

But over the past year, we have made attempts to connect with neighbours.

The reason is simply for a richer community.

the Kingdom of God. I have never met a neighbour in Lacombe or Blackfalds that has been opposed to these attributes. The neighbourhoods where these are practiced have been enriched.

In fact, the statement, “I cannot believe that happened” has redefined ‘miracle.’

For it is a miracle the old grumpy guy next door did that, or it is a miracle that the busy neighbour took the time to do this.

But for those of us who continue to drive by our neighbours without even knowing their names, we will never come to witness those miracles, let alone know the richness of what Christ was talking about when he talked about com-

munity. One thing to keep in mind - loving your neighbour is not about who you like or do not like.

Love is a word that God invented that He initiated without conditions!

The problem that many of us stumble across is that we will try this ‘loving your neighbour’ thing and discover that we do it with conditions.

Love (I Corinthians 13) is negated if it is connected to an expectations.

Just as a parent loves a child, so God loves us. And this love is without conditions. Mom just cannot stop loving her children.

God cannot stop loving us.

It has no conditions, and it cannot be stopped.

This is good reason for us to propel ourselves to love

POLICE BRIEFS POLICE CONDUCTS ROADSIDE CHECK On Oct. 9th, members of the Lacombe Police Service in conjunction with the Alberta Sheriff’s Department and RCMP conducted roadside check stops at various locations in Lacombe as part of the Enhanced Alberta Check Stop Program.

During this 10-hour period, a total of 700 vehicles were stopped.

One driver was issued a 24-hour vehicle driving suspension and had their vehicle seized. Another driver was issued a ticket for not having valid insurance.

The Enhanced Alberta Check Stop Program is a joint force operation between the Alberta Government and Alberta Police Services with funding from the province.

During these check stops officers are specifically dedicated to removing impaired drivers from Alberta roads.

This check stop saw far fewer major infractions than the one Lacombe Police Service and the Alberta Sheriff’s Department conducted on Sept. 26th where 800 vehicles were stopped and three drivers were issued 24-hour vehicle driving suspensions and had their vehicles seized.

That check stop also saw one driver arrested on an outstanding warrant and two drivers issued tickets for not having valid insurance.

Raiders victorious over Hunting Hills in Red Deer

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The Lacombe Raiders have added another win to their undefeated season.

On Oct. 11th, the Lacombe Raiders traveled to Red Deer to take on the Hunting Hills Lightning and defeated them 32-11 making their record 6-0.

Although the Raiders finished the game with a more than comfortable lead, they began the game with a bit of a struggle.

In the first half of the game, they wrestled with the Lightning for control of the game.

“They came out better than us,” said Raiders Coach Wayne Haarstad. “We struggled at the start.”

Defensively, the Raiders were strong in the first half. However the lack of yards gained by the offensive line put pressure on the defense and led to them giving up a few yards and subsequent touchdowns.

Even when the Raiders offence did manage to gain good field position, they lacked those few extra yards needed to get the ball

into the end zone and score.

For the majority of the first half, the Lightning managed to keep the upper hand over the Raiders.

When the Raiders finally did manage to pull even with Hunting Hills, the Lightning soon scored a field goal to put them ahead once again.

For the remainder of the half, the Raiders spent their time trying to once again catch up to Red Deer, but couldn’t gain enough traction on the offense. Score at the end of the first half of lay was 11-8 in favour of the Hunting Hills Lightning.

When play began in the second half, it was like the Raiders were an entirely new team.

They began an all-out offensive assault on the Lightning, dominating play both on offence and defense.

When they had the ball, the Raiders offense was an unstoppable force as they stormed their way down the field.

Several times, long runs put the Raiders right at the goal line and each time, they

managed to punch it into the end zone to score.

Quarterback Jonathan Ericson was in particularly stellar form, especially since the previous half. Ericson called the right numbers and got the ball into the right hands, allowing for the Raiders to make those long runs and get in scoring position.

He even put the ball over the goal line himself a few times to score some touchdowns.

Logan Ellis was another key player in the game.

Ellis made some incredibly impressive runs to make it easy for the Raiders to get the ball in the end zone.

Little could break the Raiders’ stride.

Even though a few embarrassing turnovers could have turned the tide in the game, the Raiders shrugged them off, answering one turnover due to a fumble by recovering the ball with an intercepted pass on the next play.

On the defensive side, the Raiders continued to be reliable and even improved.

They shut down all attempts by Red Deer and prevented their opponents from gaining any momentum on offence and preventing them from scoring a single touchdown in the second half.

Lacombe’s victory this weekend and record this season is impressive, especially considering they lost a few key veterans last year due to age.

Haarstad said that there are a lot of rookies on this year’s roster but they are stepping up to fill in new roles nicely.

Even though the Raiders may be a fairly young team this year, they have still built quite nicely off last year’s momentum.

Haarstad said this is in part because the Raiders are very passionate about football.

He said that the he and the rest of the coaching staff have little to do with the Raiders’ success this season. Instead, the Raiders coaching staff follow a philosophy of instilling a love for the sport into their players which leads to them wanting to play better football. news@lacombeexpress.com

Winning weekend for the Blackfalds Wranglers

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express This past weekend was another successful one for the Blackfalds Wranglers.

Last Sunday the Wranglers hosted the Strathmore Wheatland Kings and defeated them 9-5.

Last week, coach Sean Neumeier spoke of how the Wranglers were prone to ‘slow starts’ and falling behind early in the game. That was not the case this week at home as they began the game by scoring a 2-0 lead in the first.

However, overconfidence led the Wranglers to lose their lead within the same period. While the Wranglers managed to tie the game 3-3 at the end of the first, Neumeier said they paid for their mistake.

“We kind of felt like it might be easy and then they came back hard on us and before we knew it we were down 3-2,” he said.

“When you take a little bit of time off in a game, it costs you.”

The Wranglers realized their mistake quickly and spent the second period establishing a comfortable lead over the game.

In the second, it became apparent that Blackfalds’ offensive game was stronger than that of their opponents. While the strong Strathmore defense didn’t make it

easy for the Wranglers to score, the Wheatland Kings couldn’t keep up with the aggressive style of Wranglers play.

By the end of the second, the Wranglers were well ahead of the Wheatland Kings with a score of 7-4. Once again, Neumeier commented on the ability of his team to come back from behind.

“They get themselves in trouble but they are really good at getting themselves out.

They never really panic if we get down.”

In the third period, the Wranglers continued to control the game with their aggressive style of play and extend their lead.

Dominating the scoreboard in the third, the Wranglers ended the game with a score of 9-5 in their favour.

The majority of play in the second and third periods was spent in the Wrangler’s offensive end. Neumeier said the Wrangler’s have a strong offensive group and try to play everything on the net, making for a lot of shots on net each game. He said this may have given them an edge over the more defensive Strathmore team.

Once again, it was a fairly rough game at home for the Wranglers with lots of time being spent in the box by both teams, Blackfalds in particular. Neumeier said players will always get more careless and frustrated as score margins widen, but he

Strathmore was not Blackfalds’ only victory this past weekend. On Oct. 10th, they traveled to Cochrane where they defeated the Cochrane Generals 4-1. Neumeier said the Wranglers played well in Cochrane and they showed great improvement in playing

on Oct. 17th. The Canadian University College (CUC) will host the event and more than 700 runners as they compete for championship titles.

“Lacombe became the host of the event this year.

We volunteered and were chosen and that’s kind of a big deal. It’s going to involve hundreds of students coming to our City to compete,” said Rory Whitbread, a coach with École Lacombe Junior High School.

“The idea is that cross-

country is not done on paved trails – it’s done on rough trails that involve hills and grass and different surfaces, so it’s challenging for the runners.”

Students, parents and teachers will gather at the CUC by 10:30 a.m. to prepare for their 11:15 a.m. start. Heats and races will continue until 1:25 p.m. when the final group begins their run. Awards will be presented near 2 p.m.

The race consists of two different course lengths –

2km for Grades 6 and 7 and 3km for Grades 8 and 9.

“Personally, I am a runner and I find this very rewarding. I find that you get so many different kids out of school that you don’t necessarily see as part of other sports,” said Whitbread. “There are so many different kids from all distinct backgrounds. They all come out and really enjoy cross-country. They tend to be great kids and I like working with them to make them better runners.”

Whitbread said that the location of the run this year is, “A neat honour” as it will take place on some of the trails that were designed by the late Bill Nielsen. “CUC has an ideal venue for this event with the beautiful trails around the lake. Part of this race course will be on trails that Bill made and maintained so it’s a neat honour for us to have this race follow in the footsteps of the recent race held in his name.” kmendonsa@lacombeexpress.com

Lacombe lapidary guild making art out of rocks

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express If you like crafts or rocks, there may be a place for you in the Lacombe Handicraft and Lapidary Guild.

Lapidary can be defined as the act of forming stones, gems or minerals into a myriad of different decorative items. Or, as guild member Carolyn Cave puts it, a hobby involving a bit of geology.

“We work with rocks,” said Cave.

Members of the lapidary guild include rock collectors, rock tumblers, polishers, cutters and everything in between, said Cave.

She added that many of them choose to expand what they do with rocks and gemstones and incorporate silver smithing and other such craft skills into their hobby.

Lacombe’s lapidary guild is all about sharing knowledge. As such, many of its members also teach classes on different aspects of the artform.

For example, Ron Biel, secretary of the guild, has taken courses at Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) on gem setting and production techniques like casting.

Biel has also taken some training in fold forming, the newest jewelry making technique in the world, where metal is forged, repeatedly folded and then unfolded to take an entirely new form.

Fold-forming was discovered by an instructor at ACAD so is native to Alberta.

Dave Biro, one of the most senior members of the guild, teaches gem faceting, the technique of cutting a gemstone in order to make the different faces of a gem that make it sparkle when it catches light. The term facet also implies that there is more than one flat surface on a stone or gem.

Every Wednesday, the Lacombe Handicraft and Lapidary Guild meets in the basement of the Kozy Korner for its weekly workshop. Biro said that the object of

the guild and its workshops is to learn by practicing.

“Our main focus is hands-on,” said Biro.

In their small workshop in the basement of the Kozy Korner, the guild has a number of machines as well as other supplies and equipment for all the different skills used by guild members with their rocks and gems.

Anyone can take the process of lapidary as far as they want, all the way to jewelry making or just sticking with the simpler techniques like cutting and polishing stones. Generally, guild members start as rock collectors, also known as ‘rockhounds’ and grow to practice more techniques.

Typically, the process of taking a stone to a finished product begins like this. First, a slab of rock is marked with the desired shapes which are then cut out.

Next, a dop stick is made where a rough cut stone is attached to a stick with wax. The dop stick gives the worker something to hang onto while grinding and polishing the stones.

Stones are ground and polished using a series of diamond polishing stone wheels that work basically like sandpaper. Each stone has a different grit, from very rough to very fine.

Once the polishing is finished, an artist can decide what to do with the finished piece, whether to use it with beading, use silver smithing to fashion it into some kind of jewelry, or whatever else the artist might like.

For gemstones, the process is somewhat different. Instead of grinding and polishing the rock to create one smooth rounded surface like a cabochon, the rock is held at specific angles while grinding to create the different sides so that the light will shine through it, which is what makes gems shine.

Biro added that most people who get serious about faceting buy a special machine designed to cut those angles. He said this gives artists more control over

Biro said most lapidary members buy their stones from gem and mineral shops. However, some members have done traveling and brought back rocks from all over the world to work with.

Each of the artists has their own focus or specialty with lapidary that they prefer to work with. Cave said that all the areas are related, but some members focus on them more than others.

“I think it would be fair to say that each one of us has an area

that we like the most,” said Cave.

For example, she added that she gravitates towards doing beadwork with stones while Biro prefers faceting.

Guild member Trish Duckett said taking a stone through this process is one of the things she enjoys about being part of the Lacombe Handicraft and Lapidary Guild. She added she also likes learning a little more about geology.

The Lacombe Handicraft and Lapidary Guild was formed in March of 1980 and used to have close to 60 members. Unfortunately, its numbers have dwindled and now there are only about 15 active members.

But, the club is always accepting new members and is open to anyone 10 years of age and up.

Be the captain of your décor – blue is back Blue is back! Indigo, denim, sapphire, azure, cerulean - whatever you would like to call it, this colour is making a strong comeback on the decorating world.

Often sporting a greenish undertone, this colour is popping up in everything from glass tile to laminate flooring and it is a beautiful, fresh change for those of us who think we have ‘seen it all’ in design.

We recently had a meeting with an area rug supplier who showed us a new line of carpets and blue was the predominant colour. Blue grey is making a small departure from the shades of grey craze we have been experiencing but I was surprised to see a true denim colour dominate the palette of

MECKLER carpets he was offering. We have also received a new line of glittery, candy coloured mosaic glass and stone tiles and the blues and azure tones are breathtaking.

Navy blue was once considered to be a neutral. In the 80s and 90s blue went with everything from black to brown. Navy and red was a popular choice for those of us (yes, me too) who wanted to look like a snappy sea captain when we donned a navy and white

striped shirt with red accents. Ladies over 40 you have all done this at one point in your life, admit it!

Now in home design this colour has made its way back as a main staple in our colour palettes, often replacing black as the anchor colour in a room.

I always freeze up a little when a client suggests decorating in blues. It isn’t a colour I am well versed in and I grew in an entirely blue house and I believe I have a slight aversion to ever putting blue carpets in a client’s home.

I personally don’t wear blue (except jeans) and rarely gravitate towards any blue items when I am shopping. I do, however, have one client who has chosen a delightful shag for her home which

is a fun teal shade called Indigo and I think it is going to look spectacular. Teal still remains a favourite colour of mine whether it is the bright electricity of my bridesmaid dresses in 1990 or a more greyed version that I seem to keep drawing into the palette of my home.

Regardless of your current palette you can ‘bluetify’ your home in many ways from small accessories to larger commitments such as paint, flooring and furniture.

Blue truly does coordinate with any colour and can even be mixed with green despite the rhyming verse to the contrary (blue and green should never be seen). It is available in most decorative accessories and it brings a cool and

relaxing bit of colour into any room. Design labels such as Nautica (snappy sea captain) have embraced navy as their signature shade, making it easy to redefine your space with this current and trendy shade.
