Turkey Trot

- École Our Lady of the Rosary School students Rhys and Cole Belcher run from a giant turkey during the school’s Turkey Trot last Friday. Throughout the afternoon, students enjoyed Thanksgiving-related songs, chants and dances. A number of food items — turkeys included — were donated by local businesses and subsequently raffled off. School staff say the purpose of the event was to promote physical fitness while allowing students to celebrate everything they’re thankful for.

Sylvan Medical Center welcomes new physician JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Coming all the way from Belfast in Northern Ireland, Dr. John McConnell has joined the team of physicians at Sylvan Medical Center.

McConnell graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2005, and has been a general practitioner

for nine years.

“There are many good things about Ireland, but Canada offers me a challenge different from the usual progression of what a general practitioner is,” he said. “In Canada I get to do some hospital work as well as my clinic work which isn’t as common back home.”

“The staff are very friendly and easy to get a long with. I kind of feel like I’ve been here a long time,” he said. “It’s a nice atmosphere in this office.”

McConnell said he hopes to establish a solid list of patients, with the goal of helping people and making a difference in the community.

“Building relationships with the patients is the main thing,” he said. “It’s nice for patients to go to the same doctor instead of going to walk-in clinics, that’s the big thing.”

McConnell takes a thorough approach to getting to know his patients and starts out by getting

to know their social backgrounds — not just their medical needs.

“I find out what they do, what their family is like, what interests them and then go into the medical details after that,” he said. “Then I can see how their medical issues impact their lives.”

He added, “If you show interest in patients you can build trust with them.”

When McConnell isn’t playing doctor at work, he can be found walking along the lake or on a bicycle.

“Sylvan Lake is picturesque, it’s nice to walk along the lake and a nice place to cycle,” he said.

“Compared to where I was, there are more things happening here and more social things to do.”

Full house for largest ever Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A full house at Community Centre for the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast last Friday was a strong indication of how quickly the annual event is growing in Sylvan Lake.

About 240 people were in attendance — up from last year’s 165.

“It’s the greatest one we’ve had,” said Steve Rowe, chair of the event’s organizing committee.

“We’re just thankful to see the unity — you don’t get that in a lot of other communities. Everybody’s on board here.”

Prayers were led by 10 members of the community, following speeches by Mayor Sean McIntyre and guest speaker Red Deer mayor Tara Veer.

The Prayer Breakfast marked McIntyre’s first since being elected Mayor last year. In an emotional speech, he spoke of his gratefulness.

“It’s an honour to serve you as mayor, and I’m not sure I’ll ever grasp the weight of that,” he said.

Volunteers, elected officials and members of the faith community were among those he honoured during his speech. As were those who attended the breakfast.

“There’s an incredible amount of people here

today, and that’s extraordinary,” he said. “It’s an extraordinary event, and it’s something that I’ve been happy to be a part of.”

Red Deer mayor Tara Veer, keeping with the event’s theme of celebrating youth leadership in the community, spoke of her own youth, during which she faced her fair share of adversity.

With well-timed words of encouragement from an adult mentor, however, she eventually overcame that adversity to begin a successful career in politics.

“My road to the mayor’s office at time was paved with adversity that began when I was a youth, and I shared that story to encourage youth to follow their dreams and to persevere through whatever circumstances they find themselves in, because the future is bright for them,” she said. “It was also a message to the adults in the room to invest in the youth and kids in our lives, because I am where I am today because of a well-timed word of encouragement from a teacher who spoke to me at a critical moment.”

McIntyre noted his appreciation for the many regional partnerships the town has with surrounding municipalities, including the City of Red Deer.

Veer said she hopes ties between Sylvan Lake and Red Deer will become even stronger in what she referred to as an “era of unprecedented regional relationships.”

“Red Deer has strong operational partnerships to the north and south of us, and I think, ideally, we would like to partner more to the west,” she said. “Really, our citizens work and play in each other’s communities, so essentially we’re one larger community and region, and it’s important that we recognize that in the way that we do business.”

The Prayer Breakfast, now entering its sixth year, was supported by the Sylvan Lake Ministerial Association.

Reasons why Alberta doesn’t need more oil sands pipelines There was an interesting article in the Calgary Herald the other day: “Surging sales belie mythical oil access story.”

In it, the reporter quoted Greg Stringham, vicepresident of oil sands and markets at the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, the holy of holies. “When you hear about market access it’s not today’s market. We’re hitting record numbers ... we’re still moving every barrel of oil we need to.”

It seems that, at present, Canada pumps more than 3.9 million barrels of oil a day.

Which raises an interesting question: Hasn’t Stringham made a very strong argument to freeze production at the present level? Maybe the pipeline emperors aren’t wearing any clothes. We don’t have an access-to-market problem after all, even if we may have one in the indefinite future. (I’ll deal with the future at the end of this column.)

The bottom line is that Albertans needn’t accept the simplistic “gotta build more pipelines” narrative spun by the oil patch and its government acolytes.

For the solution to this possible access-tomarket issue is so simple — freeze production — that I’m almost embarrassed to point it out.

Why do we treat as holy writ the idea that oil sands’ production must double or triple as if this were inevitable? Don’t human beings have any control over this?

Apparently not — at least not when our new Premier and his same old gang have bought what the oil patch is selling.

What about the public interest? What would a freeze accomplish? Let us count the ways: 1. We could avoid the increasingly volatile dispute between government and industry on the one hand and native people and environmentalists on the other. Social peace might thereupon break out and billions of dollars could be saved by cancelling proposed pipelines.

2. A freeze would also help Alberta’s international image, because greenhouse gas emissions from the oil sands should decrease, given the promise of Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) and other researchers to decrease perbarrel energy intensity.

3. Such a decision would partially address the heavy cumulative environmental and social impacts of the oil sands, as well as buying time to reclaim the immense tailings ponds from surface mining operations.

In turn, the risk of a Mt. Polley-size breach of impoundment dams would decrease.

4. It would also reduce the work load of the Alberta Energy Regulator, allowing it to devote more resources to enforcing existing environmen-

5. There would be less inflation of wage and material costs as construction mania eases.

6. Less controversy would exist about labour shortages and temporary foreign workers.

Given the present slump in oil prices and the postponement of various new expansion projects, it may seem strange to talk about inflation pressures, but past experience has shown Albertans the risks of the inevitable boom and bust cycle when we passively allow market pressures to make decisions for us. In the long run, we can expect the present glut of oil to disappear and the price to rise again.

But in the meantime, ramping up to sell more into a weak market certainly doesn’t help.

Admittedly, big investment decisions have to take long-term trends into account. But if that is so, when the International Energy Agency says

One final thought. I agree with those who point out the risk in having only one customer — the United States — for our oil, whether light or heavy.

But we can deal with this in two ways: First, by using existing pipe to transport the products east, then transhipping them to Europe.

Second, by using existing pipe to get the stuff to various American tidewater ports. If the products are not merged with American oil, re-export from the U. S. is permissible. Indeed, Enbridge is already planning this move.

So. No new pipelines, Premier Prentice. And may I respectfully ask for greater sophistication when your government develops and debates public policy.

It had been open Tuesday evenings as well as Friday afternoons but patronage during the evening hours was not sufficient to warrant the extra work involved. ♦ ♦ ♦ The 1964-65 curling season starts off on Nov. 16th with an evening mixed bonspiel.

Barney Stone has been appointed caretaker of the rink for the coming curling season.

♦ ♦ ♦ Several groups and clubs have been formed among the students at Sylvan Lake School under the supervision of members of the teaching staff.

The Student Council for Grades 10 to 12 has Gayle Minchin as president and Mr. Foster as staff member.

The Junior Student Council has Hugh Jarvin as president and Mr. Hunt as staff member.

A science club is meeting each Tuesday evening under the guidance of Mr. Abbi, Mr. McGorman and Mr. Kumalo.

Students are again planning to issue a year book and staff members this year are Linda McCallum, Murray Lindman, Beverly Johnson and Josephine Cookson. Mr. Grovu is the staff member on the committee.

WHEREAS it is deemed necessary and expedient to amend Bylaw No. 1555/2010 in the manner hereinafter appearing: NOW THEREFORE, the Council of the Town of Sylvan Lake, in the Province of Alberta, duly assembled and under the powers conferred upon it by the Municipal Government Act, RSA 2000, Chapter M-26, and amendments there to, enacts as follows: THAT Section 7.38.1 be removed and replaced with the following: 7.38.1 Secondary suites shall only be located on a lot with a single detached dwelling, and have rear lane access, when in accordance with one or more of the following: a) the secondary suite is located within a lot that allows for garage suites as indicated on the Garage Suites Map; however, only one suite will be allowed per lot; or b) on a corner lot; or c) the lot has frontage along an arterial or collector road; or d) on a lot where residential development is only located on one side of the road; In addition to the above, all secondary suites shall: i) be located within a neighbourhood where the density of suites development does not exceed 15% of the detached dwellings in the neighbourhood; ii) not exceed the floor area of the principal building; iii) contain a maximum of two bedrooms; iv) have a separate entrance from the principal dwelling; either from a common indoor landing or directly from the side or rear of the building; v) not be used as a tourist home; and vi) comply with the Province of Alberta’s Building Code and Fire Code THAT Section 7.38.2 be removed and replaced with the following: 7.38.2 One paved on-site parking stall shall be provided per secondary suite, in addition to the required number of parking stalls for the principal building.

A Public Hearing regarding the proposed Bylaw will be held on Monday, October 27th, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Government Building at 5012 48th Avenue, Sylvan Lake, Alberta.

All persons in favour or opposed to the Bylaw will have the opportunity to be heard. If you are unable to attend personally, written submissions must be submitted to the Municipal Government Building no later than 4:00 p.m. on the day of the hearing.

Traffic stop results in drug possession charges being laid October 4 1:51 a.m. – RCMP were called to a residence on 47A Avenue in Sylvan Lake. A witness reported an explosion at a residence located in the four-plex. Deck doors at the residence were blown out but no one was injured. The cause of the explosion is undetermined.

4:59 a.m. – A 52-year-old male is facing a charge in relation to a traffic stop on 50th Street at Perry Drive in Sylvan Lake. A RCMP member on patrol noticed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in a 40 km/hr zone. The driver was stopped and admitted to alcohol consumption in addition to exhibiting signs of intoxication. The Calgary resident was formally charged with refusal of an approved screening device. His vehicle was towed at the scene.

October 5 1:35 a.m. – A 911 call was placed to police after a disturbance outside a residence on 44th Street in Sylvan Lake. A 30-year-old Sylvan Lake male was yelling and pounding on the door of his residence demanding that he get back inside. A neighbour confronted the male telling him to calm down at which point he chased her off the property. He was arrested at the scene for disturbing the peace and was transported to cells where he remained until sober.

12:53 p.m. – A 31-year-old Sylvan Lake female is facing a charge under the Traffic Safety Act in relation to a

A male complainant advised that a female, who appeared to be under the influence of a substance, approached him and told him to get out of his vehicle or he would be shot. The male immediately drove

The money was raised through a fundraiser held by Lucid last month, in which patrons were offered pet-themed tattoos for $50. An afterparty saw further funds brought in, along with donations of pet food and other items. Crehan said the money raised was greatly appreciated by Serenity, whose existence relies on the generosity of donors. A recent fundraiser at the Sylvan Lake Bottle Depot brought in over $1,000 for the society, while another one at Bukwildz also raised some much needed funds. RCMP report Continued from Page 6 Police attended after a 911 call was received from an address on 46A Street. A female advised that she was assaulted by her ex-boyfriend while in a vehicle, however, further investigation resulted in the female being charged with assault and mischief under $5000.

10:54 p.m. – A 911 call was received regarding a domestic dispute in progress on 51 Avenue in Bentley. A male reported that his 23-year-old daughter and 29-year-old son-in-law were having a verbal argument when the situation escalated resulting in the son-in-law pouring gasoline all over the garage floor. The male was in the process of being arrested by RCMP at which time he began fighting with the officers. He was subsequently subdued and is charged with mischief causing danger to life; break and enter and commit to a residence; assault on a peace officer; resist a peace officer; uttering threats against a person; and two counts of fail to comply with a probation order.

October 8 8:24 a.m. – An investigation is underway in relation to a stolen vehicle from a residence on Wilson Close in Sylvan Lake. A male reported that his garage door was entered into overnight and left open. His friend’s vehicle was stolen from the garage along with some ID and credit cards. The vehicle has since been recovered by Red Deer RCMP. 11:03 a.m. – A collision at the Fas Gas on 50th Street in Sylvan Lake resulted in RCMP attendance. A 49-year-old Sylvan Lake female reported that she had just finished a night shift and took a quick nap before going to the gas station. When she drove into the parking area at the Fas Gas, her truck rolled over the curb and struck the building resulting in some damage to the brick and wall of the gas station. She did not sustain injury. Alcohol was not a factor in the collision.

2:15 p.m. – RCMP conducted a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle on 60th Street in Sylvan Lake.

A female reported that she was followed by a male in a truck while she was walking along 60th Street all the way to Old Boomer Road. The male pulled up beside the female and started to ask personal questions. The female avoided the male and left the area. The vehicle was later located by police and the driver was questioned. As a result, the 57-year-old male was found in possession of a drug and drug paraphernalia. He was formally charged with possession of cocaine.

A book tour passing through Sylvan Lake last week was about much more than promoting a new collaborative young adult series.

“We’re certainly selling the novels, and the idea behind the novels, but we’re selling the idea as authors as more or less fun people. We’re having fun on stage, and really enjoying the series — writing it and talking about it.”

Released earlier this month, The Seven Sequels follows up on the original series released in 2012, and launched the authoring group into a nationwide tour.

Speaking to students last Wednesday afternoon, the authors reiterated their ‘human’ side.

“When I was growing up, we didn’t have author visits, and so the idea of seeing this guy or this girl who actually writes these books that I like to read, that’s a cool thing,” said Scrimger. “(Students) realize that (authors) are not special people; they’re not living in ivory towers and they’re not living in castles in the south of France.”

All seven of the series’ books are interconnected in some way, with some portraying the same scene from different perspectives.

The series’ authors share much of that same connectivity, according to Scrimger.

“I’ve known these guys a long time. They’re some of my best friends, and we’re having fun.” he said.

Ensuring young readers receive that same enjoyment is important, he added.

“We want them to take away that stories are cool, reading is fun, and whether you write it or read it, you can enjoy it.”

Authors who teamed up to write Seven the Series, as well as the recently-released Seven Sequels followup, spoke to audiences at École Mother Teresa School and École Fox Run School last Wednesday about everything from reading and writing to their adventures around the globe.

It was all part of a way of showcasing authors in a unique light, explained Richard Scrimger, who penned Ink Me in the Seven Sequels series.

Kindergarden students at École Our Lady of the Rosary School lined up for a preliminary eye screening conducted by the Sylvan Lake Lions Club last Thursday.

It was all part of an effort to detect Amblyopia, or lazy eye, which can be corrected if detected an early age, according to Fred Johannson of the Lions Club.

“We found one student who had a lazy eye and her parents just thought she was slow in school,” he said. “It turned out that she just needed glasses. The girl said she liked her glasses because she could watch TV.” The preliminary screening is a simple test that takes only a few minutes to do, and Johannson knows how to relate to the children by turning the process into a fun game.

Giving a child a pair of colourful glasses to wear, he holds two cards out and asks the child to point to the card with the letter ‘E’. He repeats this several times, switching the cards and holding them nearer and farther away from the child.

By doing this, Johannson is able to tell if he needs to make a phone call to the child’s parents to suggest that they take the child for an eye exam.

“Parents usually thank us for letting them know their child needs to see an optometrist,” he said.

Our Lady of the Rosary principal Jodi Smith fully supports the preliminary screening and says the children have fun with it.

“The Sylvan Lake Lions Club always does a great job,” she said.

“They have fun with the children and they make it an enjoyable experience.”

The HJ Cody Lakers football team claimed a 37-7 victory against Wetaskiwin last Friday to secure its place in semi finals.

“Our team is hitting their stride at exactly the right time,” said line coach Jas Payne. ”We have healthy players, we’re happy with our rookies’ progress and our veterans are leading well. What we thought may be a rebuild turned out to be very successful with the players we had.”

Payne said the team works well together to score touchdowns.

“We keep the ball on the ground, we run often and we get the opposing team to adjust their defence,” he said. “Every time they adjusted, we had something else for them. We have players hitting their stride.”

The team practices every day, and even though coaches don’t expect perfect play, players still play whistle to whistle.

“We make sure our timing is good and that our plays are well put together,” said Payne. “I think the reason why we’re winning our games over and over is because of our defence.”

Payne said he’s proud of how the team’s newest members are stepping into action and playing at advanced game levels.

“We have a lot of new players that are playing like seniors,” he said. “A lot of Grade 10 players have stepped in and made a difference on our team, and that is pride for us.”

Despite last week’s win, head coach Jeremy Braitenback said his players weren’t yet overly enthusiastic, and know they still have work to do.

“We expected to win because we worked hard and we should win and that’s our attitude,” he said.

“If you’re prepared and have worked hard, why shouldn’t you win? But the players know they have to be better to win future games.”

Arrest warrant issued following dangerous pursuit through town STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

An arrest warrant has been issued for a man who led police on a dangerous pursuit through Sylvan Lake on Saturday night.

Lance James Peters, 24, of no fixed address, is wanted on several charges following a routine traffic stop near CP Blakely School at 11:15 p.m.

At that time, police stopped a Dodge Ram truck, whose driver was eventually determined to have lied about his identity. After confirming the driver’s identity, police attempted to arrest him for outstanding warrants. The driver then fled in the truck, ramming a police vehicle in the process.

Police say he also narrowly missed an officer who was on foot.

A pursuit through Sylvan Lake resulted, and was led north on Highway 20 toward Bentley.

Police eventually called off the pursuit as they felt the public’s safety was at risk.

Police say Peters has committed numerous crimes over the past two weeks in the Rocky Mountain House and Sylvan Lake areas, where

they say he’s stolen vehicles and broken into houses.

He’s considered armed and dangerous, with police noting he’s “not afraid to use violence to commit his crimes,” in a release issued Sunday.

Peters has ties to Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Rimbey and Rocky Mountain House, and was last seen driving a stolen 2011 blue Dodge Ram truck.

That vehicle has since been recovered, police say.

Following Saturday’s incident, Peters was charged with Obstructing a Police Officer, Theft of a Truck, Resisting Arrest, Flight from Police, Fail to Remain at Accident and Dangerous Driving.

He also faces charges in Rocky Mountain House.

Anyone with information on Peters’ whereabouts is asked to contact Sylvan Lake or Rocky Mountain House RCMP detachments at 403-8583333 or 403-845-2881, respectively, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Police say he should not be approached.

Unlike a board of directors, advisory boards have no legal responsibility for the company’s governance, but experts say they still bring a lot of value.

“Every entrepreneur should have an advisory board. Each time I’ve seen a company create one, the first meeting produces a return that is enough to cover the compensation for the whole year.”

Jean-Yves Sarazin knows the benefits first hand. He created an advisory board back in 1990 at his company Groupe Delom, which offers maintenance and manufacturing rotating equipment such as motors, pumps and ventilators. At his advisory board’s very first meeting, Sarazin was referred to a financial institution that allowed his company to save tens of thousands of dollars through lower interest charges on a loan.

“Every entrepreneur should have an advisory board. Each time I’ve seen a company create one, the first meeting produces

a return that is enough to cover the compensation for the whole year,” he says.

Sarazin has become such a big supporter of the idea that he has agreed to sit on several other companies’ advisory boards as a way of giving back for the help he’s received over the years.

Another benefit: an advisory board obliges entrepreneurs to periodically step back and look at the overall direction of their business. “Just getting ready for my meeting with the advisory board forces me to take stock of the business and consider it from new angles,” Sarazin says.

Having an advisory board also reassures financial institutions, which examine the quality of the company’s team when assessing a loan application, he says. “It shows you’re not alone in making decisions.”

So why don’t more businesses have an advisory board? Some entrepreneurs think it may be too time-consuming to create one or are simply unaware of the benefits, Cléroux explains. But the payoffs, he says, are usually well worth the effort and cost (some companies offer advisors a nominal honorarium, while others don’t compensate them).

“An advisory board is a good tool to force the business owner to think more about the company’s vision, long-term goals and how to achieve them,” Cléroux says.

“The benefits are way bigger than the cost to the business.”

Setting up an advisory board is easier than you might think. “It’s not that hard to

find people to sit on an advisory board.

Experienced CEOs often agree because they want to help their community,” says BDC’s Pierre Cléroux.

Ask your accountant, lawyer or business network to refer potential candidates. Some business associations offer a service to help companies find advisory board members.

Effective advisory board members tend to be veteran business people who offer expertise an entrepreneur may lack. They

should be completely independent of the company, rather than your accountant or lawyer—“someone who will give you the true story,” as Cléroux puts it.

Entrepreneurs should meet their advisory board regularly—for example, on a monthly or quarterly basis. About 60% of advisory board members receive no compensation, while others usually get a modest honorarium. A restaurant meal or retreat can also be a way to thank advisors.

Businesses should be creative about finding ways to attract and engage talent.”

Cash is king — it’s a common saying in the business world. But surprisingly few entrepreneurs take steps to manage their cash flow so they don’t wind up with an empty bank account and nothing to pay the bills.

“One of the main causes of business failure is poor cash flow management,”

says Susan Rohac, Senior Vice President, Financing and Consulting, at the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC).

The good news: Cash flow management is easy to improve with a few simple steps. “Getting control over your cash flow helps you prepare for slow periods, plan your financing and have peace of mind,” Rohac says.

Follow these five steps to get a better handle on your cash flow:

1. Profitability check: First, make sure your business is earning a reasonable profit. Even the greatest cash flow management won’t help if your fundamentals are out of whack.

Analyze each product and service separately to see whether it’s pulling its weight. Make sure your products are appropriately priced, and work to eliminate inefficiencies. Instead of just chasing sales, chase profitable sales.

In 2007, Mike Whittaker’s company Bonté Foods learned the consequences of poor cash flow the hard way after facing large cost overruns on two major projects.

The changes had a huge impact. Sales in Bonté’s meat division are up 36 per cent since 2009, while gross profit is up almost 6 per cent. “We learned to watch our cash very carefully,” Whittaker says.

“You need to always be ahead of the curve on cash flow management.”

2. Do a cash flow projection: Next, prepare a cash flow projection for the coming year. This is your early warning system for cash flow hiccups. Use an Excel spreadsheet or accounting software to plug in expected monthly cash inflows and outflows, including anticipated big-ticket purchases.

3. Finance big buys instead of draining cash: One of the most common cash flow mistakes is using cash to buy a major long-term asset, instead of getting financing. Even if you feel flush right now, you may suddenly wind up short of cash if you experience a sudden revenue shortfall or rapid growth.

plan your financing needs ahead of time, not in the midst of a crisis, when bankers may be wary to lend. Rohac also recommends matching the lifespan of a purchase with financing of similar duration.

4. Speed up cash inflows: Getting money into your business more quickly can save you carrying costs on your line of credit. Some tips: Send out invoices more quickly, ask customers to pay electronically and charge interest to slowpayers.

5. Raise cash quickly in a crunch: Facing an unexpected cash flow crunch?

You can raise cash quickly using various techniques: approach your bank for help; check your inventory and assets to see what you can sell off, even at a discount;

ask suppliers or your landlord for extra time to pay bills; or offer your customers a big discount to earn some quick sales.

BDC’s Susan Rohac points out that managing finances is one of the main challenges for entrepreneurs, coming in second after marketing and sales. The findings of a BDC survey this year confirm her observation: More than four out

of five entrepreneurs (82 per cent) say they’re the ones managing cash flow and financing in the company.

However, many of the entrepreneurs don’t take basic steps to control their finances. Almost half say they don’t make cash flow projections and check them against actual results — a basic procedure of financial management.

They might not be as sexy as a fancy new product that makes a big splash in the news or revolutionizes an industry, but they’re the bread and butter of most highly innovative businesses, Selci says.

And given the limited R&D resources at most small companies, incremental innovation probably offers the best payoff for entrepreneurs over the long-term.

“If you don’t innovate, you risk falling behind,” Selci says. “But radical innovation isn’t the answer for most businesses.

Small incremental steps are what they need to work on to help their business grow.”

Rob Read of Bison Fire Protection agrees. His company, which supplies fire protection products and services, is growing at an impressive clip, with sales shooting up 20% each year since 2001. Bison has ranked as one of Canada’s top 500 fastest-growing companies two years in a row.

What is Bison’s secret? Constant improvement, Read says. “I think if you’re not innovating, changing or trying things, you’re dying. If you think business is done the same way as 10 or even five years ago, you’re wrong,” he says. “It doesn’t have to be the clouds parting and light beaming down. And we’re talking doable things?little changes on a regular basis.”

Read recently brought in an outside consultant to audit his business processes and look for efficiencies. He had noticed some of his employees were overworked, so he wanted to find ways to make their lives easier. “If you’re running a marathon every day, you’ll lose a lot of your people,”

he says. The expert recommended some simple streamlining measures, such as processing paperwork more efficiently and improving scheduling and inventory management. It sounds like simple stuff, but these innovations made a huge difference.

“That marathon turned into a walk in the park. People are less stressed. We’re getting better production with the same people and lower costs,” Read says. “The staff have repeatedly come to me and said, ‘Thank you.’”

Another recent innovation was to start having weekly meetings to brief sales people and project managers on the status of various jobs. That’s resulted in better productivity and customer service, Read says.

One more innovation: hiring a supervisor for each of Bison’s three divisions.

Thanks to these managers, employees are now getting better support and training.

Bison has also started investing more in its people by offering weekly staff training sessions.

And Read’s not done. Upcoming plans include a customer survey and another outside audit in a year or two. “As we grow,” he says, “I’m continually looking at ways to innovate.”

the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). “Canadian entrepreneurs and the public at large need to be more forgiving about failure. Failure — and learning from mistakes — is often an important milestone on the path to success,” Bergeron says. “We have to change our perception about failure in order to help business owners stay in the game.”

Deborah Conroy of EY agrees. She points to the new BDC Entrepreneurial Resiliency Award, an initiative that recognizes a Canadian business that has successfully undergone a turnaround or pivotal event in the past and come back stronger because of it. “Many entre-

preneurs talk about some kind of massive failure or hurdle they’ve overcome,” says Conroy, Vice President of Transaction Advisory Services at EY. She is also President of the Montreal chapter of the Turnaround Management Association, a group for corporate turnaround experts that teamed up with BDC for this award.

No business is too big or too small to confront roadblocks. Bergeron cites the example of Groupon, the giant deals website. The company got its start as a social media site called The Point, which was created to help people connect for social activism purposes. After a year of effort and US$1 million in operating costs, the start-up was going nowhere.

“The founders shifted gears and turned their offering into the discount coupon service Groupon. They learned, adapted and made a fortune,” Bergeron says. Two years later, the shift in focus proved profitable: Groupon ballooned from a few dozen employees to 10,000 and was the fastest company in history to make US$1 billion in revenue.

Bergeron advises entrepreneurs to adopt a “try, try again” philosophy. At its core: Learning from mistakes and showing resilience, a new business approach that is growing in popularity in today’s rapidly changing economy, he says. Instead of the old model, which emphasized extensive planning before launching a new venture — by which time technology and markets may change substantially — the new approach favours a lean and nimble start-up.

The idea is to engage customers early with a basic product, even if you haven’t worked out all the bugs. The second step: Learn quickly from customer feedback and missteps. Third: Constantly refine your efforts. And the final secret ingredient: Don’t give up.

“I don’t think fear is all bad. It can be healthy and reasonable. It keeps entrepreneurs from making rash decisions,” Conroy says.

“But it’s important to avoid excessive hesitation and waiting for the exact perfect moment. Trying, failing and trying again is much better than not trying at all.”

How do entrepreneurs turn failure into success? “They have had a knack for seeing failure as an opportunity or challenge,” says BDC’s Michel Bergeron. “When solution ‘A’ didn’t work, they tried solution ‘B’ if they were still convinced there was a need. Or they decided to meet a different need and, in the process, found a new path. The setback helped them identify a weakness, and they fixed it.”

Deborah Conroy of EY agrees. She cites a 2013 EY survey that found the following: Over one third of Canadian entrepreneurs (35 per cent) said business failure is seen as a barrier to future business prospects. This is nine percentage points higher than the average across the G-20 countries, which was 26 per cent; and Canadian entrepreneurs may be more worried about failure because of “higher expectations,” but they should also keep in mind Canada’s “many entrepreneurial upsides,” such as the low cost of starting a business, the survey authors noted.

Support for food addicts available through meetings TREENA MIELKE SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

It took several diets, continual cycles of denial and self-directed criticism and a weight problem that had spiralled to 300 pounds for Beth to finally realize she needed help.

“I was 300 pounds and had serious healthy issues like high blood pressure and borderline diabetes. I knew I was very much overweight, but I thought I would just be fat and happy.”

Unfortunately, it wasn’t working. Not only did she feel miserable, her health was in jeopardy, and slowly getting worse.

Beth was at a point in her life when she was almost resigned to the fact she may have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair if she could not get her obesity under control.

It was during one of those dark days when all hope seemed to be lost that a friend recommended Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous.

Beth made the choice to attend a meeting just to see what it was all about.

It was a choice that changed her life.

Beth has been a member of Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous for 10 years. During that time her weight has returned to a healthy number, her selfesteem has been restored and physically she looks and feels great.

“My doctor told me I had the blood pressure of a teenage boy after a nap,” she said with a pleased

Beth chuckle.

Mary’s story is similar, but different.

Growing up with an overweight mother who became her eating buddy, an unhealthy pattern of rejection and acceptance began early in her life.

“Although we ate together I felt criticized and pitied for my obesity.”

Mary eventually married and had three children, but her addiction to food never left her.

“I could control food for a while, but would always go back to overeating. I lost and gained over 80 pounds three times.”

After embarking on her own journey of weight loss methods, she, too, finally took her 230pound self to a Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous meeting.

She has never looked back.

Being addicted to a food is a disease that can slowly kill you, Beth said.

“Obesity is rampant and it can be a horrible, slow death.”

Continued from page 27 Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous is a program based on the 12 steps of Alcoholism Anonymous. There are no dues, fees or weigh-ins at the meetings.

It is a fellowship of individuals who, through shared experience and mutual support, are recovering from the disease of food addiction.

It is open to men and women of all ages.

Members include those who have been obese, or under eaters, bulimic, or so obsessed with food or weight they cannot focus on anything else. People who have weighed as little as 62 pounds or as much as 400 pounds, and others who have been of normal weight, but are obsessed with food or dieting have joined.

Members have usually joined the program after trying a number of other solutions, none of which have been successful.

The program allows members to use the 12 steps, work with a sponsor and turn over their eating problems to a higher power.

“It’s simple, but it’s not always easy,” said Beth. It’s disciplined and the meetings are a lifeline.”

In an article about her struggle with food addiction Mary wrote: “I am grateful for the fellowship and for this pattern for living. I am thankful for a loving and disciplined sponsor, who dares to speak her truth so I might find mine. I am now very present and available for my family, no longer focusing all my attention on food.”

In the long-term, many members have maintained

Although we may contemplate it from time to time, most of us don’t think seriously about preparing a will. But it may be the most important document we will ever write, and there’s no time like the present to write a will and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from having it done. Here are a few guidelines: Should I consult a lawyer?

Some people try to save money by drafting a will on their own. While completing a readymade will that can be purchased for a few dollars may seem appealing, it may end up costing more money for the people you wished to benefit with your estate.

Wills are governed by provincial legislation which can change. You may also not be an expert on the ins and outs of taxation and how to reduce what will need to be paid. One unclear sentence or phrase could put your will into legal limbo for a very long time.

The cost of having a professionally-drafted will is far less than most people realize. You can also save money by making sure you are organized and ready before seeing the lawyer by creating a record of your important documents and the names of your immediate family, executor and beneficiaries. The less time you spend with the lawyer, the lower the cost of preparing your will.

What will happen if I don’t have a will?

If you don’t have a will, the court appoints an administrator to manage your estate.

Provincial legislation will determine who your beneficiaries will be—and this may include some people that you had no intention of remembering.

The process is generally costlier in terms of both administrative expenses and lost tax advantages—leaving much less than you may have intended for your chosen beneficiaries.

And some of the bequests you had always

intended to make, such as to your church, your favourite health charity or organizations like Amnesty International that you supported in your lifetime, would be ignored.

What is an executor?

An executor is the person you choose who will be responsible for using your assets as needed to pay any outstanding debts and to file a final income tax return. As well, the executor is responsible for preserving your

assets until they can be sold or transferred to the beneficiaries of your estate.

Once all the financial obligations have been met, and a clearance certificate from the Canada Revenue Agency has been obtained to prove there is no claim for unpaid taxes, the executor can then distribute the remainder of your assets according to your wishes.

Who can be an executor?

Any adult can be an executor

including one or more of the following: your spouse, a family member, a friend, a trust company, or a lawyer.

The important thing is to choose someone who is both capable and willing to take on the responsibility of handling your estate.

Grade 4 students go digital JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Grade 4 students at Eckville Elementary School have eagerly embraced their new virtual workspace world of doing school work on Chromebooks.

Principal Ian McLaren explains that Chromebooks are a portal to the internet, do not have a hard drive, are low maintenance and are fairly inexpensive.

Looking like a medium sized laptop and having a speedy start time, students set up their own devices and enter the big world of Google.

Within their own workspace, students can work independently or simultaneously in groups to complete an assignment and hand in a digital copy. Parents even have the ability to view what their children have been working on in school.

Students assignments are created

and stored in the ‘cloud’ or on the internet.

This is the first time the school has had Chromebooks and even as a pilot test, the students love working in their new digital world.

Not only do the devices make it easier for students to complete their school work, students are also learning the environmental benefits of going digital.

“They are easier to use because you don’t always use up school supplies,” said Grade 4 student Aaron Knudsen.

Chelsey Ackerman teaches the enthusiastic class and said the initiative allows her to teach in a unique and exciting way.

“The students are really excited for these books, they are doing awesome with using them,” she said.

“They are environmentally friendly — instead of paper, I have digital copy.”

“The partnership between the Ministry, the federal government, our CAO, the board and the Town of Rimbey on this project is a great example of partnership and collaboration that exemplifies how we get things done in our part of the province.”

The proposed complex is to be built on 8.54 acres of land which has been purchased by Ponoka County for $310,000 south of the Best Western Rimstone Ridge Hotel.

“The land is in the process of being transferred to the Foundation,” said McLauchlin.

An 80-room $15.5 million affordable seniors’ complex in Rimbey has moved one step closer to completion.

Rimoka Housing Foundation board chairman Paul McLauchlin said partner municipalities including the Town of Rimbey, Ponoka County and the Town of Ponoka have endorsed the $3.5 million debt load required by the housing foundation to build the lodge.

“The debt servicing will only be needed midway to the end of the project,” said McLauchlin.

The remainder of the $15.5 million project costs comes from a $13.3 million grant made available through the Provincial and Federal governments. County Patrol sees potential accidents waiting to happen all around us.

It’s early in the morning, there was a heavy frost last night and someone’s late for work. The car windshield is covered with frost again and your scraper is in the other car. Oh well, let the defroster get it while I get to work, right?

WRONG! The Traffic Safety Act of Alberta, Use of Highways and Rules of the Road Regulation, Section 80(a) states: “A person shall not drive a vehicle on a highway if the view through the windshield or windows of the vehicle is so obscured by mud, frost, steam or any other thing so as to make the driving of the vehicle hazardous or dangerous.”

If you can’t see the children on the side of the road waiting for the

school bus in the early morning dark or the stop sign at the next intersection (not to mention the intersection itself), that’s pretty hazardous. What about that icy patch or that plank in the middle of the road?

While not everybody does this all the time, too many drivers are guilty of not clearing their vehicles’ windows before driving, often in the dark, because they are in a hurry. Everyone needs to take that extra minute to scrape or clean all the windows. It’s the law, but more importantly, not doing so can be downright dangerous to you and other motorists. Think about it!

Provincial legislation provides a fine of $115.00 for this offence.

Our precious son, father, and brother passed away in the Red Deer Regional Hospital unexpectedly yet peacefully.

Jeff (Jethro) will always be remembered as a faithful friend, extremely hard worker, who loved to be outdoors camping, hiking, snowmobiling and motorbiking. Jeff was very meticulous about the quality of his work, highly respected in the oil patch, the trucking industry, as a journeyman welder and was a true farm boy.

Jeff had fond memories of the family farm in Bassano where he would hang out with his sisters and the farm hands, build jumps with bales, or motorbike with his best and lifelong friend Jamie Beringer. Words to describe Jeff are dependable, creative, risk taker, fun loving, tree planting environmentalist, caring, big hearted, competitive, and loyal, with a quiet respect and faith in the Lord.

Born in Bassano, Alberta Jeff is survived by his beloved son, Bradley whom Jeff was so proud of; Brad’s mother, Birdena Kopeechuk; parents, Wayne and Donna Arrison; 3 sisters, Sherry Strand and son Devon, Cathy and Bryce Kalynchuk and children Hunter, Marshall, and Simone, and Beth Arrison; as well as grandparents, Fred and Janet Schneider; the families of his uncles Norm, Fred, Pat Schneider and Melvin Currie, and his aunts Gail Arrison, Marelyn Dubois and Debbie Boudreau.

Join us in celebrating his life on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Balmoral Chapel located at the intersection of Highway 11 (55 Street) & Rutherford Drive in Red Deer at 1:30 p.m.

Alberta Strong The Sylvan Lake market returned to normal in September with active listings down and sales off from August but up from last September. The sales to listing ratio is back to normal as well, sitting at just over 20% where buyers have a slight advantage. It’s been a great year with sales up more than 23% over last year and it looks like another strong year in store.

When pondering the future of central Alberta, the story remains pretty much the same-strong in-migration from other provinces driven by a strong job market, high wages and low taxes. In April, May and June of this year, Alberta gained a net 13,204 new people from

other parts of the country (the difference between the number of in-migrants less the number of out-migrants).

That is the equivalent of Alberta adding another city the size of Camrose to its population in a matter of three months.

Part of the reason for our strong economy is that our oil is now making its way to market by train. New markets mean higher prices for producers and more royalties for the government who will be spreading that money around before another provincial election in 2016.
