Dispatching emergency calls is an intense job that can’t be taken personally

The man accused of head-butting his neighbour can be seen on one of the video monitors that line a wall in the radio room as police bring him into custody. Cameras record activities going on outside the APD building and in the area where suspects are admitted into the cells. There is no audio with the footage, but the man is clearly agitated and is shouting at officers during the entire admissions procedure.

Once in a cell, located below the radio room, he can be heard yelling. Sometimes, suspects thrash around so forcefully that the radio room staff can feel the floors rattle.

Jay is not yet halfway through his 12-hour shift, but the calls have been constant.

The woman who had apparently left multiple messages with the previous caller reaches Jay. She acknowledges she made the calls, but she’s upset because her boyfriend is with the other woman.

“She wants to know if you will stop calling her,” Jays says.

“No!” the woman says.

He puts the call on hold as his other line rings. The dad he spoke with a few minutes earlier has found the missing girl. Jay phones the girl’s mom, and the relieved and thankful woman agrees to make arrangements to pick up her daughter.

Jay returns to his other call and again requests that the woman stop bothering the other lady.

“No! He’s my boyfriend. I love him. I want my boyfriend!” she says.

“He’s your boyfriend. You can have your boyfriend,” Jay reassures her. He tells her he has to go and the information will be forwarded to police.

parking lot, an out-of-control neighbour swearing and slamming doors, three drunken men riding a toy horse down the street.

Jay’s thorough questioning of one of the callers is met with an exasperated response: “My God. You guys take so much time to figure something out. My God.” Jay tells her that three officers are on their way, and she hangs up.

A woman reports that her mom just head-butted her dad and she is being drunk and disorderly. She and her brother have intervened and are keeping mother and father apart.

Asked the dates of her parents’ birthdays, the woman is not sure. She says she’s not good with birthdays.

“Do you know your birthday?” he teases her to lighten up the situation.

The woman laughs.

Tina’s shift is over, and Jay moves over to dispatch. His job becomes even more hectic, as he is dealing with all the files as the call takers enter them into the system.

The radio room receives a call about a break-and-enter in progress. The caller says he heard glass smashing at the

home of his elderly neighbours, and he can hear footsteps on broken glass.

All available units are dispatched, and Jay continues to access his on-screen map to determine the exact house in question and provide the information to officers on scene.

Police determine there has been no such incident and surmise that someone might have heard the sound of a breaking beer bottle.

Jay’s shift comes to an end. He will do it all again tomorrow – his final shift of a four-day stretch before he has four days off. Although the shifts are long and fatiguing, he looks forward to coming to work.

Fire crews quickly snuffed out a blaze Friday morning after 10-foot-tall flames took hold of a small forested area that had been used as a homeless campsite.

The fire broke out around 10 a.m. Friday in a heavily treed area in Lonzo Creek Park, off of Sumas Way behind Save-On-Foods.

Only a small area burned before firefighters arrived on the scene and doused the blaze.

Jeff Adams said the fire was human-caused, but it was unclear whether the site was being actively used as a campsite.

“By the time we got there, there wasn’t much left of it,” Adams said. “It looked like there were remnants of a structure.”

The area is used by the homeless. A shopping cart and other personal remains could be seen at the fire site after the flames were extinguished, and a well-constructed tent appeared inhabited less than a hundred metres away from the site of the fire.

The full list of candidates running in the upcoming municipal election, which will be held Nov. 15, has been released.

There are two candidates for the mayor’s seat, incumbent Bruce Banman and Coun. Henry Braun.

In the 2011 election, there were five mayoral candidates.

There are 31 candidates running for council and eight will be elected.

Incumbents Les Barkman, Moe Gill, Dave Loewen, Bill MacGregor and Patricia Ross are all running again, but three council seats have no incumbent, as Coun. John Smith will not seek re-election, former councillor Simon Gibson was elected to the legislature and Braun is seeking the mayor’s seat.

The man wasn’t happy with his sandwich.

He had left the restaurant in the 32700 block of South Fraser Way in Abbotsford after receiving his takeout order for a soup and sandwich on Sunday afternoon, but he returned.

The tomatoes and lettuce apparently weren’t to his liking.

The man became increasingly heated about the issue as he explained the problem to restaurant staff, police say.

One of the workers, a woman

in her 40s, shifted him away from the other customers and tried to get him to calm down.

The man’s anger grew and he suddenly threw his hot soup at the employee, striking her in the face and chest, according to police.

The man then stormed out of the restaurant and drove away, but not before a quick-thinking witness noted the licence plate on his vehicle.

Police were called to the scene, and they determined that the shaken worker had suffered minor burns to her chest, neck and face but did not

require treatment.

Meanwhile, other officers were dispatched to the home of the registered owner of the vehicle that the angry customer drove away in.

A 42-year-old man was arrested at the residence and now faces a charge of assault with a weapon.

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the man, who cannot be named until charges are formally laid, has prior convictions for assault with a weapon, breaking and entering, and theft.

Don’t over-promise

Here’s a simple request for candidates seeking election in the upcoming school board and municipal election: Only promise what you can deliver.

That might seem an obvious request. But all too often, candidates vow to achieve things they clearly cannot. They either fail to provide the true cost of their promise, or they promise something outside the legal mandate of the office they seek.

Call it enthusiasm. Call it lack of experience.

Either way it doesn’t serve the voter.

For example, there are some fairly severe limits on what a city can and cannot do.

It must work within the provincial legislation that governs its existence. A promise to silence every train whistle within the city boundaries might sound attractive, but trains are a federal responsibility. City council can’t make them do anything.

Likewise, a promise by a school board candidate to hire more teachers won’t happen without an explanation of where the money to pay for those new employees will come

from. And school districts cannot, by provincial law, run a deficit.

Which brings up the second point: Money.

Rarely does a promise come without a cost, and candidates have an obligation to identify what that cost will be.

A promise to double the number of parks in the city, for example, might draw support.

But what will maintenance cost, and what impact will the removal of that land from the tax base have on city finances?

A promise to cut taxes, or freeze them, must also include details on where the cuts in services will come or alternate revenue found.

None of this is to suggest candidates can’t have ideas or voice creative and imaginative solutions But they have an obligation to voters to ensure that what they promise is practical – or more particularly, possible.

And we as voters have the responsibility to do the research and ask the tough questions to ensure these lofty ideas have some grounding in reality.

Other Hand I remember using one of the first ‘portable’ phones. The mechanism was housed in a large, briefcase-like container, and the handset attached with a coiled cord still found on home and office phones today.

In 1991 I acquired a Motorola 8000, which was the size and weight of a brick, complete with four-inch antenna. Back then I put it to good use, conveniently ignoring the high cost per minute of calls thanks to the ability to write them off as a business expense.

Although the early ’90s weren’t so long ago, cellphones were a rarity. Today everyone has one.

Because of its size, to use the old Motorola while driving I kind of jammed it against the seat, or between my legs, and punched in the numbers while hold-

ing the steering wheel in the other hand, glancing up now and then to ensure I wasn’t meeting a semi head-on.

Fortunately, as years passed and technology advanced, phones got smaller and the numbers easier to dial.

Flip phones were soon discarded. I found that when a call came in I’d scoop it off the seat, try to flip the cover to take the call, and lose it when my thumb slipped.

Eventually, I progressed to a Blackberry and now use an iPhone.

As most know, these are not just phones but micro-computers capable of instantly delivering world news, information, photos, emails and texts.

The convenience of communication from anywhere, anytime, is so remarkable we have become addicted to cellphones.

Being the curious creatures we are, it is almost irresistible to not immediately pick up the phone when it bongs from the cup holder, indicating another email or text to check out.

And those distractions have become the cause of far too many motor vehicle accidents.

handheld devices when driving, I bought a Bluetooth device that allowed me to talk and call without touching the phone.

It does not allow the reading of texts or emails however, and that is the root cause of many collisions.

The convenience of communication from anywhere, anytime, is so remarkable we have become addicted to cellphones of purpose, which is to drive our vehicles carefully and safely.

When new laws were enacted a few years ago, many people ignored them, figuring if they got caught the fine was little more than “the price of doing business.”

Thus, with many flouting the law, the provincial government is now cracking down, making it rather painful financially

to be a repeat offender.

The fine jumps to $634 on the second offence, and goes up from there.

However, along with fines now come driver’s licence demerit points, which carry their own cost.

Rack up 50 demerit points and ICBC will ding you $24,000. That’s enough to sideline and send to cycling even the most ardent cellphone-using driver.

I agree completely that the dangers inherent in reading or sending texts and email while driving are unacceptable and should not be permitted.

I also fully support the use of handsfree calling devices.

There is absolutely no justifiable reason to take your eyes off the road or lose concentration while driving, particularly on the freeway or congested streets.

It is, therefore, a bit of a conundrum to have a police officer whose job it is to enforce the law and hand over tickets to offenders, drive our streets and highways with a large computer screen glowing over his/her console, or see them holding a cellphone to their ear.

letters Out of sight New plan for homeless: When I saw in the newspaper the location the city wants to house 21 homeless men, I was sick to my stomach.

I was in total disbelief.

I had to take a magnifying glass to the newspaper, to look at the picture. This is the only entry and exit for this large neighbourhood to come and go from.

Do you think we want to see this building for homeless right there? Where we will be making a left turn to go up-town to go shopping or leaving to go work?

I’ll never feel safe or happy walking down the street or anywhere near there again. This whole idea of putting the homeless right there fills me with anxiety.   Everyone knows these are not normal people. Most are mentally ill or drug addicts and alcoholics.

And they do need help, but many refuse it. It was hard enough to see them up the road, when we were going out somewhere – garbage everywhere.

They can’t even use a garbage can! Riding their bikes, shooting up drugs. I’d often say to my husband while driving, please take a different way. I just don’t want to see this disgusting mess.

What about all the good people in this area, that work and pay taxes, who take care of their houses, and have done massive renovations, or even bought new houses in the area? Further down the streets, there are nice and quiet areas.

Please build something where we don’t have to see or deal with these people and all their problems. How would you like to have this in your neighbourhood?        Susan Nieruchalski Abbotsford

School backpack program expands The Blessings in a Backpack program has been renamed for the 2014-15 school year.

The program is now called the Starfish Pack Program and has expanded from the original pilot project of 10 backpacks at one school to the current level of 12 elementary schools serving 184 students and their families.

By the end of October, it is hoped that the program will be in 14 schools with a total of 216 backpacks.

There are hopes to further expand the program, with additional corporate and personal sponsorships needed.

The program, which is supported and coordinated by the Abbotsford Rotary Club, began in the 2012/13 school year to help feed kids who might be going hungry on the weekends. Many of these students were part of their school’s breakfast and/ or lunch programs during the week. Every Friday, participating students receive a backpack filled with two breakfasts, two lunches and two dinners to last them for the weekend.

The empty packs are then returned and refilled for the following week by volunteers who shop for the items, fill the back-

packs and deliver them to the schools.

The cost of providing the backpacks for one child for the school year is $525, which comes from donations from local organizations, individuals, businesses and churches. Those wanting to contribute are asked to visit the Abbotsford Food Bank at 33914 Essendene Ave. or call 604-8595749. Cheques can be made out to the Abbotsford Food Bank with “Starfish Pack Program” on the notation line.

An Abbotsford man has been charged with three child pornography offences.

Danial James Munroe, 58, was arrested Wednesday and has been charged with making child pornography available, distributing child porn and possessing child porn.

Const. Ian MacDonald of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) said police were notified by an outside investigator that on Feb. 4, the possible distribution and possession of images of child sexual abuse had occurred from an Abbotsford home.

The APD’s major crime unit began investigating the matter in early June, and executed a search warrant at the residence on Sept. 3.

Items seized from the home included computers, phones, cameras, hard drives and storage devices.

The crime rate is down 11% in Abbotsford since Mayor Banman has been elected!

Munroe has been released from custody under court-ordered conditions that include: no contact with anyone under the age of 18; not attending any public park, school ground, swimming pool or other area where people under the age of 18 are expected to be present; and not to posses or use any device capable of accessing the Internet.

Munroe’s conditions also include: not communicating with anyone known to be involved in the sexual exploitation of children or in trading/possessing child exploitation materials and not accessing or being in possession of pornography of any kind.

A group of local residents are calling for the widening of Fraser Highway, bringing a petition to council with more than 1,600 signatures asking the city to make the project a priority.

Donna Verrault, a resident of west Abbotsford, spoke to council last Monday about the concerns of the residents in the area about the ongoing traffic and safety issues on Fraser Highway from Mt. Lehman Road to Station Road.

Verrault said while the route has always connected Abbotsford to communities in the west, it was never designed “to handle the thousands of vehicles that now travel along it daily.”

She said her family has lived and worked on Fraser Highway

No major improvements to route since early ’60s From A14

since 1972 and has seen the community grow and change with residential developments, new businesses, seven gas stations, a large greenhouse, truck parking and more.

“Surprisingly though, with all of these changes, there have been no major improvements made to Fraser Highway since its present day inception in the early 1960s.”

She said it’s a main route for anyone who wants to avoid Highway 1. Though lights has been installed, “all that resulted was an increase in traffic accidents.”

Two accidents in the last month completely closed the highway – a common occurrence – said Verrault.

She added if there is an issue on Highway 1, people take Fraser Highway instead, turning it into a “parking lot.”

Even with new sites approved for developments but not yet built, there are no plans for widening the road, she said.

While Langley and Surrey are facing similar issues with Fraser Highway, they have widened many sections and have plans to widen more, said Verrault.

“Why isn’t the City of Abbotsford planning on the same type of improvements? Why isn’t Abbotsford making Fraser Highway a priority to be widened?”

Jim Gordon, the

city’s general manager of engineering, explained that Fraser Highway used to be a provincial highway, but about 15 years ago was turned over to the city.

Coun. Henry Braun said that over the past three years, he has voted against developments in that area due to the two-lane highway and “then I was branded as being

anti-business.”

But he said he believes that Fraser Highway should have been widened “yesterday” and be a top priority.

Gordon said the

city owns most of the right-of-way to widen the road, and believes the cost to expand it to four lanes would be between $30 million and $40 million. He said the city

would want to ask the province for financial assistance.

“It is a priority. The question then becomes, ‘How do we go about paying for that in a prudent way?’ “

Toy Run rolls into town Oct. 19

The 28th annual Central and Upper Fraser Valley Toy Run will roll into town on Sunday, Oct. 19, collecting toys to help local kids have a Christmas.

The event is free, but volunteers ask attendees to bring new unwrapped toys, and they will receive a pin. Financial donations will also be accepted.

The toys will be distributed through the Christmas Bureau at Abbotsford Community Services, and gifts will go to children in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Hope, Mission and Agassiz.

The event started in 1986 by Barney Hopkins. Sr. and his wife Lenore, and the event is still being managed by the Hopkins family, volunteers and friends.

Motorcyclists can assemble in Chilliwack at Sears on Luckakuck Way, with riders meetings at 9 a.m. and leaving at 9:15 sharp.

Citizens Patrol celebrates 30 years The Citizens Patrol in Abbotsford is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

The first patrol shift was launched on July 27, 1984.

In the years since, the program has grown significantly and those volunteers have made considerable contributions to public safety, said Const. Ian MacDonald, spokesman for the Abbotsford Police Department (APD).

The program now has almost 100 volunteers serving the community.

MacDonald said these volunteers give an average of 9,500 hours of their time each year, patrol more than 20,000 kilo-

$350,000 to help youth develop skills Abbotsford MP Ed Fast has announced $350,000 in funding for a youth employment program in the community.

The funding was announced Monday (Oct. 6) from the federal government’s Skills Link Program.

Agora Employment Essentials, a wholly owned company of Mennonite Central Committee, is receiving the support for a project called Youth Keep Working, to help 42 youth facing barriers to employment.

Project participants will develop the skills and tools necessary to make a successful transition to the job market or return to school.

They will develop useful skills in the areas of problemsolving and teamwork.

They will also gain work experience with local employers in a variety of sectors, including manufacturing, automotive and hospitality.

Participants may also learn skills related to their personal career plans, such as first aid and CPR training.

In 2013, Agora E m p l o y m e n t Essentials also received funding through the Skills Link program of more than $350,000 for a similar project, which ended in June 2014 after helping 40 participants.

Brad Vis Vis, a former adviser to MP Ed Fast, said after speaking with community members, he has heard that Fraser River manageVIS ment and flood protection are key priorities. He said he would also like to see greater focus on financial literacy for youth.

Scholarship to study abroad Abby student among 16 recipients

An Abbotsford student has been awarded a scholarship from the Irving K. Barber B.C. Scholarship Society to study abroad.

Hayley Cooper is in the social services program at University

of the Fraser Valley and will be studying in England. She is among 16 students to have been awarded the Premier’s International Scholarship of between $6,000 and $10,000 each.

The students are enrolled in overseas programs in 15 different countries. The scholarships are funded form the returns on a $15 million endowment fund established by the B.C. government.

Pot activist Felger runs for council

Felger has been in the headlines for two court cases – one in Abbotsford and one in Mission – in which he was charged with trafficking drugs from storefront locations.

He was acquitted in the Abbotsford case, but the Crown has won an appeal, and Felger has taken that decision to the Supreme Court of Canada to argue that he shouldn’t have to undergo a new trial.

Most of the charges have been thrown out in the Mission case, but the trial will proceed at a future date on adapted charges.

Abbotsford school trustee Preet Rai has announced he will run for a third term in the upcoming municipal election.

Rai has been on the Abbotsford board of education for six years.

A chartered accountant from India, he immigrated to the U.K. in 1992 and worked for the Scottish government.

He moved to Canada in 1995 and has been working for the provincial government since 1997. His wife is a teacher and they have three children, all of whom have attended or attend public schools. Rai’s mother

Cookbooks: Q Inspiration at our fingertips

One of the oddest couples I have ever met was after one of my live cooking performances at a local fair.

A woman in the distant crowd was watching the tail end of my show and approached me afterwards.

“I can see by watching you that you love to cook.” She said. “I can see that the crowd was inspired by your show, but my husband and I, we never cook. You could even go as far as saying that we hate to cook, so we never do it. You may think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not. We never cook.

We eat in restaurants, get take-out, fast food, and buy microwave prepared dinners.”

I was shocked, to say the least. My first thought was “why are you telling me this?”

Then she went on and asked me “I bet you can’t guess what we use our oven for?” I shrugged my shoulders and she said “to store cookbooks. It’s wasted space for us, so we use it as a bookshelf.”

This was the oddest thing I have ever heard. “Why do you even own cookbooks, if you don’t cook?” I asked.

“Doesn’t everybody?” She replied.

Good point. She’s right. Everyone has a collection of cookbooks, either large or small, and apparently even people that don’t cook. I am assuming that they must have received them as gifts?

We all get into cooking ruts at times in our lives and our meals in the meantime suffer from lack of stimulation you’re not alone. However, right there in your own home, you have an assortment of cookbooks just waiting to be opened, pondered through and used.

I have a challenge for you. At some point over the next seven days from reading this column, I challenge you to open up one of those cookbooks. Not one that you received as a gift, but one that you purchased yourself with your hard earned money. I want you to relive the moment

when you bought it. The moment when you are flipping through the pages with excitement and motivation, saying to yourself “I gotta have this book” as you lay your cold hard cash down on the counter. Find those recipes again, and this time, make them.

Motivation can easily be stimulated from outside sources (such as cookbook recipes in this case), but true motivation comes from within you. You have to take that first step, the steps that follow, and the final step to make something happen. If you are truly discouraged with the same old meals you are making, you will find a way to make this happen.

Many cookbooks simply just gather dust because we either forget about them, or more likely find that there is too much emotional pain to learn new recipes and we stick with what we know... it’s easier.

I guarantee you this however, if you take the steps, and keep trying (even through times of possible mistakes or failures), you will succeed. Your meals will become new again and with any luck you will find happiness in your new found inspiration that has been there with you, waiting for you, all along. Take this success and let it inspire you to keep learning new recipes. Chances are you have a kitchen and plan to continue to eat the rest of your life, so this will not be a waste of your time.

I could at this time also make the suggestion of searching the internet for recipe ideas, but I think that with your vested interest in the cookbooks you have already purchased, you will be more driven (and in the end, more fulfilled) to create this victory yourself.

Reduce your risk MOVE IT! Compared to no physical activity, exercising five hours a week can substantially reduce your risk.

Bike, run, dance, walk your dog, jump on the bed with your kids…it’s all good.

TOSS THE FRIES! Opt for a low-fat, high-fibre diet that includes lots of fruits and veggies. Also, try to limit red meat and animal fats… choose olive oil instead.

BUTT OUT! Smoking kills people! Get help quitting.

STAY FIT! Maintain a healthy body weight. We know this means something different to everyone, but keep in mind that extra fat cells make extra estrogen.

MAKE A BABY! If you’re planning on having babies, try to start early (before your 35th birthday) and breastfeed (if possible). Interrupting consistent estrogen exposure through pregnancy and breastfeeding is a good thing.

DO YOUR HRT HOMEWORK! Before taking Hormone Replacement Therapy, consider all sides.

Recent use of combination HRT has been shown to increase your risk of breast cancer. Long-term use puts you at greater risk.

GET YOUR VITAMIN D! Studies have shown Vitamin D helps regulate normal breast cell growth. Plus, there’s a possible link between a low Vitamin D level and a higher risk of breast cancer. The best sources are sun exposure, vitamin D3 supplements and oily fish.

GO ORGANIC! Synthetic chemicals and many pesticides used in food production, processing and packaging end up in food.

Choose organic when you can (especially for the “dirty dozen”). Also, wash and peel your fruits and veggies to reduce pesticides.

BUY FRESH FOOD! Limit use of canned foods and plastics and get your food from the farm, not the factory.

Processed foods are usually full of fat, sugar, salt, and preservatives. Also, chemicals in the packaging can leach out of the container into your food. Only use plastics with recycling code #1, 2, 4 and 5. Avoid containers with recycling codes #3, 6 and 7.

COOK AND STORE FOOD SAFELY! Avoid using nonstick pans at high heat and never cook or heat food in plastic because harmful chemicals can be released into your food. Use stainless steel, glass, ceramic and cast iron pots, pans and storage containers.

After an extensive audition process, Abbotsford dancers Kelly Blancas, Taya Bjarnson, Summer Sheehan and Avery Senft have been accepted onto Team Canada West.

They will be representing Canada in Jazz/Ballet and Modern at the International Dance Organization World Championships in Poland this December,

along with 40 of Canada’s best dancers from the Lower Mainland.

The IDO World Championships is the Olympics of dance.

Last year, Canada won best international team overall for the second year running with the most gold medals of the 24 participating countries.

Each dancer must raise more than $3,600 to attend the competi-

tion. They have been fundraising around the community all summer long.

Most of the dancers dance 20 hours a week and then dance for hours on the weekend with Team Canada.

Team Canada is led by head choreographer Danielle Gardner of “So You Think You Can Dance” for jazz and modern, and choreographer Caitlin Griffin for ballet.

Victory at last MEI wins prestigious tournament Paul ESAU Abbotsford News

In the near decade that the MEI Eagles senior boys volleyball team has been attending the prestigious Panther International in Spruce Grove, Alta., they’ve never managed to walk away with the title.

That is until this weekend.

Obviously the MEI side (currently ranked first among B.C. AA squads) has been building up some formidable frustration through all those years of foiled dreams, because during the course of the two-day tournament the team compiled eight straight game victories with an astonishing 16-1 set win-to-loss ratio. MEI tore through the 24-team tournament with one purpose, which they accomplished Saturday afternoon while facing the fourth-ranked team in Manitoba, the AAAA Steinbach Secondary Sabres.

The 2014 version of the Panther International Tournament included seven of the top ten AAAA squads in Alberta plus elite teams from Manitoba and Saskatchewan. MEI was the only representative from B.C. on the boys side.

Undersized compared to most of the other squads, the Eagles didn’t enter the tournament as favourites, but their tenacity and defense eventually carried the day.

“Every game felt like a sort of David and Goliath in terms of the size of the teams,” said MEI coach Jordan

Geransky, “but we just have a superskilled group that would grind out wins over and over. It was cool to be able to upset all these teams that weren’t expecting much of us.”

The Eagles faced an additional obstacle in the absence of their key leftside hitter Jordan Loewen, who went down with an injury a week before the tournament. Geransky initially worried that Loewen’s absence would cause his team to mentally throw in the towel, only to watch them adapt perfectly to the loss of their most proficient point-producer.

“Everyone had to contribute,” he said. “With Loewen out of the lineup, it really kind of messed with the way our offence normally runs, so instead our offence was spread throughout the entire lineup. Levi Block…was our kill leader for the tournament, but that’s not a role that he’s normally put in. He’s a libero in club volleyball and is normally a passing player.”

Block had 56 kills over the 17 sets.

Teammate Kaden Gamache contributed 47 kills, while libero Keaton Boughen had 26 digs.

In the championship game against Steinbach, MEI took the first set 25-23, before falling behind by nine points in the second. Despite the deficit, the Eagles almost came back to sweep the set, but eventually fell 25-22. In the best-of-three format, the third set is only played to fifteen points, and MEI scraped out the victory 15-11.

Lafarge cross country four-race totals The Lafarge CrossCountry Grand Prix concluded last Wednesday, wrapping up another successful annual series for the Valley Royals.

Participation was down this season due to September’s teacher’s strike, but the series still drew nearly 400 Grade 4-8 athletes to Clearbrook Park every week.

Cascades beat CIS champs The UFV Cascades men’s soccer team has made a habit over the last few season of being a thorn in the side of the UBC Thunderbirds.

The reigning twotime CIS champion Thunderbirds were well on their way to an undefeated season last weekend, until the Cascades ground out a 2-1 victory on Saturday to hand UBC a first loss.

It’s the second time in two years the Cascades have spoiled a T-Birds undefeated streak.

“We seem to have a little bit of incentive when we play them,” Cascades head coach Alan Errington acknowledged. “Without trying to give too much away, I think the tactics we play against them suit us.

The victory enabled the Cascades (5-4-1) to leapfrog the UBC Okanagan Heat (45-1) for third place in the Pacific Division of Canada West.

Rocky start for Hadwin and Taylor Bateman blanked The first event of the 2015 PGA Tour, the Frys.com Open, wasn’t the doorcrashing success that Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor were hoping for, but Hadwin at least came away with a result to build on.

The tournament was held over the weekend at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif., and brought veterans and rookies alike into a new season of professional tour action.

Hadwin came out firing with a cumulative -5 through two rounds, driving him deep into the top 15, but couldn’t hold it together down the stretch. His

four round total of 286 strokes (70, 69, 72, 75) left him tied for 53 overall with a -2 stroke finish. Bae Sang-Moon finished at -15 to win the event by two strokes and claim the $1,080,000 winner’s share.

Hadwin earned $13,890 with his placing, which is the most he’s made at the PGA level since his fourthHADWIN place finish at the RBC Canadian Open in 2011.

Taylor didn’t make the cut after finish-

ing the first round at par (72) and then completing a second at two-over (74).

Both players won their PGA tour cards playing on the 2014 Web.com tour, cementing their status in the final playoff tournament in September. Hadwin finished first on the money list by virtue of his playoff exploits, granting him fully exempt status for the entirety of the 2015 tour.

Taylor squeaked in the back door with a phenomenal final round of the final playoff tournament, but, because he lacks Hadwin’s exempt status, will only play select PGA events this season.

Last week’s offensive production (culminating in a 35-6 result against Samuel Robertson) simply wasn’t to be found by the Robert Bateman Timberwolves Friday as they were frustrated again and again by the green tide of the Pitt Meadows Marauders en

route to a 14-0 home defeat.

The Timberwolves were chomping at the heels of the Marauders in the standings prior to the match-up, but are now sporting a sedate 2-3 record in the AA Eastern Conference compared to Pitt Meadows’s 4-1.

The game was a little perplexing for a Timberwolves squad that has the offensive weapons to score, but simply couldn’t find a way to bring them into play.

Josh Friskie once again danced between tackles at quarterback until three interceptions in the first half sidelined him for the second. Running back Austen Zacher ripped a turnover from the arms of an unsuspecting opponent, pulverized Marauder flesh down the middle, and galvanized the Bateman running game, yet all without picking up a single TD. When it mattered, the Pitt Meadows defence stood firm, and the Timberwolves were forced into a stalemate second half already down by 14.

The critical play of the game came in the final minutes of the first half when, after Zacher forced a turnover to set Bateman up for the final drive of the half, the Timberwolves themselves coughed up the ball and Pitt Meadows sprang free for a second touchdown.

“They had a big explosion play at the very end of the half,” said Timberwolves coach Dan Village after the game. “A last second touchdown on a 40 yard bomb, that’s a big play.”

Still, Village was proud of his team, and complimented their defensive effort.

“We need to work on limiting our mistakes on offense and finetuning our plays…but our defence was lights out. Devin Sidhu and Austen Zacher are kind of our studs at linebacker…those guys are our defensive anchors and the others rally around them.”

The Timberwolves play again at home next Friday against the Earl Marriot Mariners at 3 p.m.

Our dear Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother passed away peacefully on October 9, 2014 in her 89th year. She will be lovingly remembered by daughters, Bonnie Bushman, Sharol Draney, Penny Bushman; sonin-law, Wayne Mills; grandchildren, Jason (Laurie), Tammy (Cory), Niki (Chad), Chrissy (Lyle), Laura (Sunny), Bryan (Kendl), Trisha (Dave); 17 great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by husband, Dave; daughter, Debbie; granddaughter, Kimberlee; son-inlaw, Ches; grandson, Billy; sisters, Thelma, Shirley; and brother, Wes. Blanche was born in Alameda, Saskatchewan. She moved to Mt. Lehman, British Columbia where she met Dave. They were married in 1948 and lived in Straiton. In 1967, they moved to Abbotsford where they resided ever since. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, fishing, bingo, trips to Reno and family get togethers. The family would like to thank Dr. Turchen, Dr. Elmayergi and all the wonderful staff that took care of her at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Also, we would like to thank the caring staff at the Cottage Pavillion. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Henderson’s Funeral Home. Jessie is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Richards; granddaughter, Jamie (Sid) Steiner; 2 great grandchildren; brothers, James, David and Ray Lampson; sisters, Lucille Piddock, Charlotte Jacobson and Nancy Walker as well as numerous extended family and friends. She was predeceased by husband A. D. Chranows and the love of her life, Stanley Walt, as well as 2 older sisters, May Patterson and Peggy Kawaza. Jessie had a fulfilling career in nursing but found her most satisfying work as a supervisor at the South Caribou Health Centre before retiring. Always the farmer’s daughter, she had a great affection for cows. She will always be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother by her family. Special thanks to the staff of Summerland Senior’s Village, especially to Naomi, for the wonderful care in recent years. A family gathering to remember Jessie will be held at a later date.

Luella was a member of the Bakerview Church. George and Luella had many long time friends at Emerson Park Estates. In earlier years they lived in Vancouver and attended the Ebenezer Baptist Church. Luella

always enjoyed her gardens and handicrafts.

DURANT, Ken Dec. 27, 1919 - Aug. 22, 2014 Ken passed away at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital on August 22, 2014.

Son of Robert and Murial Durant of Smith Falls, Ontario, Ken is pre-deceased by his loving wife Katherine “Kay” (2008) and his second son Paul (2005). He is survived by his two sons, Barrie and Dale, sister Barbara Cole, two granddaughters, five greatgrandchildren and his nieces and nephews across Canada.

In his life Ken served his country as member of the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II stationed in Prince Rupert and Vancouver; was a successful entrepreneur and business man working with his brothers to run the family business in Smiths Falls and then on his own in Brockville, Ontario; was a faithful servant to the Lord; travelled the highways and byways of North America from Vancouver to Halifax, Alaska to the Southwest and the Florida Keys making lifelong friends along the way.

Ken and Kay retired in 1985 to the west coast of British Columbia and continued to enjoy a travel-filled life with home bases in Coquitlam and Abbotsford, where they were active members in their community and church.

Ken loved many things in life his wife, Katherine; serving the Lord; and his family. For his sons growing up, these things were never in doubt.

He was a brave son, loyal husband, great father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

His kindness and generosity throughout his life was remarkable. He will be missed by all who knew him.

GEDDERT, Aganetha (Neta) Passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 with her family at her side.

Neta was born on October 10, 1927 in Russia to Heinrich and Barbara Wiens. She emigrated with her family to Paraguay in 1930 and married John Geddert in 1952. Before emigrating to Canada in 1965 Neta and John had their four children: Barb, Helena, Erich and Monika.

Neta is predeceased by her husband John, her brother Gerhard, her sisters Helena, Barbara and Liese, her son-inlaw Werner, and her granddaughter Nadia, and is survived by her brother Henry (Lily) Wiens; children Barb Dyck, Helena Young (Murray), Erich (Brenda) Geddert, Monika (Arnie) Stroscher; son-in-law Allan Young; grandchildren Mark (Bonnie) Dyck, Vicky (Jonathan) Clibbon, Anthony (Shelley) Dyck, Lynnette (Kyle) Klassen, Nigel (Adelle) Young, Tosh Young (Kezia), Anna and John Geddert, Connor and Noah Stroscher and great grandchildren Ben, Elias and Solomon Dyck, Lila and Ridley Clibbon, Carson and Isaac Dyck, Levi and Silas Klassen and Henry Young.

Neta’s family greatly appreciated the prayers and support of all who helped them through her

illness. The graveside service will take place Wednesday, October 15 at 10:30 a.m. at Maclure Road Cemetery, followed by a celebration of Neta’s life at twelve o’clock noon at Eben-Ezer Mennonite Church, 2051 Winsor St., Abbotsford.

HANES Alice Mrs. Alice (Ginger) Edna Grace Hanes, late of Abbotsford, BC, passed away peacefully in her sleep with her family at her side on October 10, 2014 at the age of 97.

She was the youngest of five sisters, Rita Fowler, Irene Payne, Viola DeNike, and Flossie Gregory, who have all predeceased her. Ginger will be fondly remembered by her children, Graeme (Bev), Nancy, David (Diana); her 5 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and 3 great great great grandchildren. Loving wife of the late Donald F. Hanes who passed away in 1994, she was also predeceased by their son, Donald; son-in-law, Jim Moxley; and grandchildren, Marlene Moxley, Brett Hanes, and Bob Hanes.

She married Donald Hanes on October 18, 1936 while living in Huntsville, ON, later moving to Toronto, ON. While Don was serving in the Air Force they moved to Edmonton, AB, and then moved to BC, where they resided in: Edgewood, Robson, Patterson, and Rossland (where they opened the Sunshine Coffee Shop, which is still operating). They moved on to Genelle, Trail, and retired in Christina Lake in 1972.

Retirement at Christina Lake was good - fishing, cards, friends and long walks with their two special dogs. Ginger will be remembered for her love of animals; cats, dogs, birds and fish. Throughout her life she had them all. They enjoyed their trips to Yuma, AZ in the winters to get out of the snow. One of her favourite pastimes was playing crib and crazy eights. Her last six years were at the Cottage Pavilion in Abbotsford, BC. She had many cherished friends among the care givers and we thank them for treating her so special.

She loved all the activities, especially bingo and singing hymns. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 11:00 am at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC. Interment will follow at Chilliwack Cemetery, 10010 Hillcrest Drive, Chilliwack, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local SPCA. Eric Isaac, longtime Abbotsford resident and Legion member, passed away at age 89, in his sleep, at Maplewood House. A special thanks to Dr Pauls and the staff for the care and comfort they provided Eric during his stay. He leaves to mourn, Grace (Heppner) Isaac, his loving wife of 68.5 years, daughters Laura Munn, Kathleen (Thomas) Schoen, granddaughter Sophia Schoen, sister Alice Hale and numerous other cherished family members.

Reunited with deceased son Douglas and siblings Peter, Frieda and Nettie.

Born in Feodorfka, Russia, Eric emigrated with his parents as a toddler to a farm in Lucky Lake SK. Joined the RCAF in 1943. Before retiring at the rank of Major, CO of Nanaimo Military Camp, Eric had been stationed from the Yukon across

Canada to Montreal, as well as serving in Metz France and Lahr Germany during the cold war. After the military Eric joined the civil service with DOC and Corrections Canada.

His many passions included golfing at Ledgeview, astronomy,

communications from Morse Code to wireless, tinkering with gadgets and listening to the Divine Liturgy.

A celebration of life will be held Monday Nov 10, 11am, at Cascade Community Church, 35190 Delair Rd, Abbotsford.

KLASSEN, Agatha Elfrieda Agatha Elfrieda Klassen was born on October 25, 1921 to David and Katharina Klassen in Wohldenfurst, Russia. She passed away peacefully on October 6, 2014 at the age of 92.

Agatha completed her education

at the University of British Columbia and was the Librarian at Chilliwack Senior Secondary school until her retirement. In her retirement, she was actively involved in setting up a Library for a Christian University in St. Petersburg, Russia. Back in Abbotsford she devoted her time to translating family histories from German into English.

Throughout her life she was a member of a Church family and contributed countless hours in various roles at the Yarrow MB Church. Agatha was predeceased by her parents, two siblings and two nephews.

She will be greatly missed by a sister and a brother, her nieces and nephews and her close friends. Service was held on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Bakerview MB Church, Abbotsford.

She departed this life with her family around her on October 12th, 2014 at Valhaven Care Home at the age of 89 years.
