He said the tagline is fresh, classic and casual menswear; in other words, jeans, T-shirts, hoodies, dress shirts, dress pants and the associated accessories, such as belts, ties and even socks, given the recent trend for designer socks.

Drzewiecki also said he’s looking to get NYLA Fresh Thread’s name out there.

“I want to really focus on our brand personally. Not necessarily the brands we’re bringing in,” Drzewiecki said. “I want people to feel comfortable in the brand and know that we’re not selling overpriced clothes. A lot of times these small boutiques open up ... and it’s out of the reach of everybody and the normal [price] range.”

He said T-shirts can range from $20 and up, jeans from $80 and dress shirts from $50.

After a bit of a hiatus, men’s fashion is making a return to 206 Commercial Street in Nanaimo.

While previously a women’s boutique, the downtown Nanaimo storefront was the site of Ken Thompson Men’s Wear from 1957-99 and Rickwood’s Menswear from 1999-2009 and there was a gap, according to Leon Drzewiecki, owner of NYLA Fresh Thread, which currently occupies the space.

“We wanted to rekindle menswear in Nanaimo and bring it out and offer what the market’s kind of been missing,” Drzewiecki said. “So when we launched this, our idea for the whole thing was just having a local shop, everything, all the materials

ing design, something he is parlaying into fashion. On top of graphic T-shirts bearing the store brand for men and women, there will be shirts featuring structures from the Harbour City’s past.

“For many years now, probably 15 years, I’ve wanted to graphic T-shirts and I really like architecture being a builder and being a carpen-

ter, and I like to take a lot of the 100-year-old pictures of downtown Nanaimo, from Commercial Street, Wharf Street, Bastion Street ... and get some of those pictures printed on T-shirts,” he said.

There will be limited and mass production runs and will be good for tourists and residents alike.

He said the pronunciation of the men’s clothier name is somewhat open to interpretation, but personally, he refers to it by separate letters, as opposed to “nie-luh” or New York to L.A. “As of right now it’s NY, L.A. I kind of like a little bit of separation in it, just because it shows New York as business and L.A. as casual,” he explained.

As mentioned, Drzewiecki used locally-sourced products when renovating the store space, which he said is important.

Thirty-five-year-old fence board from Bowser and antlers from a hunter in Cedar (used for a chandelier) are amongst the items used.

Cafeteria idea transforms into high-end restaurant

An idea for a staff cafeteria has added flavour to the downtown cuisine scene.

REWsters Restaurant evolved out of Real Estate Webmasters owner Morgan Carey’s notion to create a staff cafeteria while renovating the old Daily Free Press building at 223 Commercial St. for his company’s new headquarters.

Creating a workplace offering healthy food prepared by a chef turned out to be the recipe for an upscale downtown public restaurant while retaining the original highend cafeteria concept for Real Estate Webmasters’ employees.

REWsters has seating for about 140, including the outdoor patio area, in a setting which could be described as elegantly funky.

“We’re waiting for approval now to see if we can expand our patio,” said Courtenay Althouse, restaurant manager. “People love it. We’ve got propane heaters for at night.”

Sunday to Wednesday the restaurant is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. From Thursday to Saturday, REWsters is open until midnight to capture the evening crowd looking for latenight snacks or a drink before going home.

The patio is the last thing the restaurant puts away at night.

cess of seeing if we can get it open a little later until one o’clock for our liquor license,” Althouse said. “Around seven o’clock is when we really pick up a lot.

Althouse describes the cuisine as classics that have been made classier from a scratch kitchen created by chef Thomas King who

takes pride in everything he does, right down to his chipotle ranch dip.

King was Carey’s executive chef, former chef to Simon Holt and the Bayshore in Parksville, but honed his skill over the first 20 years of his career at the Banff Springs Hotel.

“For example, our Philly cheese steak isn’t just a regular, drip-down-your-arm Philly cheese steak,” Althouse said. “Chef takes his bread and does cream cheese, aged cheddar, makes a grilled cheese and then he takes a steak – and it’s real steak, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, grass fed – and he slices it top, drizzles it with an au jus,

the mushrooms, the onions and he takes time to really present it. We’re not a quick lunch place. Our stuff takes five minutes longer than everywhere else to cook because of the presentation and the little extras he puts that time into.”

Prices are on par with what you’d find at upscale restaurants.

Drinks are a tad more expensive for a reason.

“We want this to be a really elegant place where girls can have a night,” Althouse said.

“Couples can come, they can enjoy wine without it being a rowdy atmosphere. We want people to come in and enjoy intelligent food and enjoy intelligent service.”

Waterfront focus of city improvement

She’s new to Nanaimo but has already found something to love – the waterfront.

“I don’t think you can put a value on it. It’s priceless,” she said. “When I sit down here, I feel like I love Nanaimo. It’s so peaceful.”

Plans for change are in the works for Nanaimo’s waterfront, considered the city’s busiest park.

Residents are expected to get a glimpse into physical updates considered for the green space this fall when the city releases its updated Maffeo Sutton Park Improvement Plan, including ideas stemming from a proposed Hilton hotel. The city has also signed a letter of intent to

partner on the first expansion of the promenade and purchased 10.8-hectares of the south industrial waterfront.

“The biggest thing we did is we actually bought 1 Port Dr. That was a pretty significant commitment to the waterfront right there,” said Bill Corsan, the city’s manager of real estate.

“Then I think we’ve been working with the tenants down on the Newcastle Channel on the walkway pieces and we’ve been looking at those park spaces so there’s been a lot going on.”

Waterfront enhancement became a priority two years ago in the city’s strategic plan, which highlighted the potential for an updated park improvement plan and new sections of harbourfront trail.

According to Corsan, the purchase of the south industrial waterfront has redirected the city’s energy.

“Suddenly we have this huge

piece of land that we have lots of work to do on as opposed to before that, when the plan was written, the intention was to kind of work on a waterfront trail essentially,” he said. “Now I think it’s just a matter of going back and bringing the two together.”

Corsan said work on establishing a new Departure Bay trail connection would be up to the next council.

On the south downtown waterfront, an environmental analysis has started to look at what areas need to be remediated and there are plans to demolish an old pallet yard on the site in October to help pave the way for redevelopment.

“Obviously like Rome, it can’t be built overnight,” said Mayor John Ruttan. “We are still looking at the pieces and trying to decide just exactly how the pieces fit and how to expand on it.”
