Blackmore and Oler appear in court to face polygamy charges

Winston Kay Blackmore sat in the public section of the courtroom, surrounded by eight daughters and a granddaughter. He was represented, on a temporary basis,

by Vancouver attorney Alison Latimer and was not required to speak to Judge Grant Sheard. The indictment against Blackmore alleges that he has 24 wives. James Marion Oler, Blackmore’s brotherin-law, has not retained counsel and requested time to hire a lawyer. The Oler-led faction is said to keep close ties with the followers of Warren Jeffs in the US. Jeffs is currently incarcerated in Texas. Both cases were remanded until December 4 so that
Penalty points added for distracted driving By Tom Fletcher Talking on your handheld phone or fiddling with a music player while driving will cost you three penalty points in addition to a $167 fine, effective Oct. 20. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton announced the additional penalty points Wednesday, making it the same as the penalty for texting and driving. Penalty points are also added for infractions such as watching a video or programming a phone’s GPS system. Anton said the B.C. government is also reviewing its fines and could increase them, but not to the $1,000 fine Ontario drivers face for a first offence of distracted driving. “I think a $1,000 fine is rather high,” Anton said. Penalty points remain on a driving record for five years, and result in a $175 increase in insurance as soon as they exceed three points. Fines and
points for two distracted driving tickets in a year add up to at least $634. At nine points, the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles considers licence suspension. Anton said there were 51,000 tickets issued last year for distracted driving of all kinds. “Ticket volumes show us that more drivers are ticketed for talking on an electronic device than for texting and driving, and so that is where we decided to start with the new penalty points,” Anton said. Distracted driving is the second biggest cause of fatal vehicle accidents, with an average 88 people killed per year from 2009 to 2013. That compares to 105 deaths attributed to speeding and 86 due to alcohol or drug impairment. Police can also issue tickets for driving without due care and attention to any driver who is noticeably distracted or inattentive and increasing risk to others.

Neither has retained counsel and Sheard suggested they speak to the Legal Aid lawyer who was in the courthouse at the time. The husband and wife are followers of Oler’s faction. When asked outside the courthouse if he speaks to his son often, Winston said, “Not for a long, long time.” Their case was also remanded.
No information about the charges was provided in the courtroom, but Crown prosecutor Peter Wilson consented to Latimer’s request that Winston Blackmore should be able to cross into the US because he has family on both sides of the border. Sheard agreed to amend previous conditions that required him to remain in BC or Alberta. Blackmore will still have to report in to the Creston RCMP every other Wednesday. “He is not a flight

“I’m worried about money,” he admitted. Asked about how he will carry on with his life with what could be a lengthy trial looming, he said, “We just live one day at a time and we’ll do the best we can.” “It’s Thanksgiving weekend,” he said. “I’m just going to go home and be thankful.”

Opposition seeks Mount Polley details–cites reduced inspections investigations are complete. Polak released an Oct. 6 letter from B.C. Chief Inspector of Mines Al Hoffman, who is supervising one investigation of the dam failure. Hoffman said investigators is examining “all documents relating to the history, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the tailings facility” and has interviewed more than 50 people. “I share the concern with the Ministry of Justice that the public release of information related to the tailings facility at Mount Polley may impact investigations by tainting evidence of persons yet to be interviewed or reinterviewed,” Hoffman wrote. Imperial Metals issued a statement last week in response to a Vancouver newspaper report that a 2010 inspection report described a crack found in the Mount Polley

the Mount Polley mine spill area Thursday, but refused a demand by opposition politicians to release inspection reports on the mine and tailings dam that col-
lapsed Aug. 4. Environment Minister Mary Polak said the water results showed “slightly” elevated levels of aluminum and copper in water samples
from Quesnel Lake, but water remains safe to drink in the area affected by the plume of tailings in the lake. Polak said all information related to health
and safety of area residents has been made public, but she is complying with a request from investigators not to release inspection reports until multiple
dam. The crack was 900 metres away from the area of the August breach, and “was thought to be associated with localized settlement of loosely compacted material along the downstream slope of the embankment,” the company said. NDP energy and mines critic Norm Macdonald referred to reduced inspections at a coal mine in the Kootenays, and a memo from a ministry official in 2010 warning of the risks of reducing mine inspections. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett maintains that annual inspections of Mount Polley and other mines with tailings ponds were not reduced, although other inspections were reduced.

Black Friday is a chance to keep your cash local by Brian Coombs Black Friday started as an event that occurred on the Friday following Thanksgiving in the United States. In cities across that country, throngs of people looking for outrageous deals line the sidewalks for hours waiting for stores to open. There are about a million (give or take) Youtube videos about this practice—some are funny, others not so much.
Cranbrook also has a Black Friday event that takes place a week earlier than in the U.S. While the population may not be lined up in the wee hours of the morning to take advantage of the sales, it is still an event that stays true to the premise of getting a deal on your Christmas presents (or anything else you may need). Shops throughout the city are encouraged to do a number of things
including; • Setting out a large selection of clearance items at great deals. • Having special buys • Giving away free stuff (Yay! Free stuff!) • Giving a percentage off some (or all) items in the store • Having draws • Buy more save more promotions. Judging from the stores involved at the Black Friday website (cranbrookblackfriday. ca) there will be deals aplenty on November 21. This isn’t to say however, that there will be the same price points as its U.S. counterpart. Some of those store
chains are so large that they can afford to lose a lot of money on Black Friday and they often do so in the cause of brand recognition. This is Canada though and being a business person in a retail setting often means getting by on ridiculously low margins—especially if you are not a chain store. But the deals will be out there and more importantly, the Black Friday event gives you, the local consumer, a chance to support a local business with cash as opposed to supporting them with Facebook ‘likes’; which give a warm, fuzzy feeling but
don’t pay the bills. The added bonus of buying local is that those dollars stay here in the community. The shopkeepers make a little extra, they spend a little more here, which gives other shopkeepers more money to buy stuff and before you know it, more businesses want to move into town. Before you know it, the economy improves, potholes get fixed, the city looks better and extensive research* shows that life will become a Broadway show where people dance and sing in the streets at the drop of
a hat. In regards to businesses for the Black Friday event, you have to let people know why they should visit your shop. Posters are available at the Chamber of Commerce, the local radio stations are more than willing to broadcast an ad and of course, the Kootenay Advertiser is running great deals for those wishing to let people know what makes your shop the place to be on Black Friday. So on this coming Black Friday, put on your best deal-getting shoes and hit the streets of the city looking to load up your shopping bags. If you don’t shop locally all that often, you will find the experience a pleasant surprise. There are now three nominated candidates for Mayor, fifteen for Councillor and six for School Trustee. Nomination papers will be accepted until 4 pm on October 10 by appointment with the chief election officer. Forms are available at City Hall as well as on the City of Cranbrook website.Advance voting takes place at the Seniors Centre on November 5, 6 & 12. Mail voting information is available from the Chief Election Officer. General voting day for the Local Government Election is at Laurie School, Saturday, November 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Voters will be asked to vote for one Mayor, up to six Councillors and up to five trustees.
In addition the City will be seeking electoral assent on whether or not to continue adding fluoride to the City’s Water system. The question will ask: “Are you in favour of Council adopting City of Cranbrook Cease Fluoridation Bylaw No. 3799, 2014, which authorizes stopping the addition of fluoride to the municipal water supply effective January 1, 2015?” Advance voting takes place at the Seniors Centre on November 5, 6 & 12. Submitted Now running for her third consecutive term as School Trustee, Trina Ayling is very proud of the achievements of the School District No. 5 Board over the past three years. “The most obvious achievement that everyone would recognize is that, from Elkford to Cranbrook, we have had no school closures,” explained Ayling. “It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve approached all our decisions calmly and logically, and in close consultation with

parents, teachers and all members of our school community. It’s paid off with greater stability and consistency for our students.” While inadequate provincial government funding is a constant refrain from school boards across BC, Ayling highlights the fact that the present SD5 Board has managed public funds responsibly, with every budget balanced --even in the face of ongoing fiscal challenges. “We have to operate our school system within funding constraints.

That’s the reality. But we do have some flexibility in how we allocate those limited funds, and we have worked very hard to find ways to trim expenses to minimize the impact on our students,” explained Ayling. “Each year we also provide government with a reasonable ‘needs budget’ so they can see, down to the penny, the gap between what we receive versus what we need in order to deliver the education students and parents deserve.” With the recent hiring of a new Superintendent for the District, followed by a number of other promotions within administration and teaching staff, Ayling believes SD5 is well positioned to provide a consistent and quality educational experience for students for many years to come. However, she believes there is one major piece of unfinished business in Cranbrook. “We need a replacement for Mount Baker High School,” said Ayling. “We’ve done more public consultations on developing this school than any other Board in the province. It’s old, it’s crowded,

and it costs too much in operational expenses to run. It’s time to make the investment in our students and in our local economy, and I hope to continue to work with my fellow trustees and MLA to make that happen.” When she’s not attending Board meetings, parent advisory and various community meetings, or helping raise her two sons with her husband Chris, Ayling finds time to write children’s stories, and over the past few years has done a number of readings at libraries across the Kootenays. “Literacy is a big focus for me, not only because it is essential to succeed in life but also because it opens a child’s mind to other experiences and places,” explained Ayling. “I like to write about being true to yourself and your own potential, and it’s a belief that I carry through in my role as trustee. I am very thankful to the citizens of Cranbrook for their past support, and I look forward to the opportunity to continue working hard to help all our students secure a bright future.”

Calendar Girls donation to EKRH honours Jenna The Off Centre Players in cooperation with the Cranbrook Community Theatre presented “Calendar Girls” in May of this year. The stage play chronicles the reallife story of a Women’s Institute chapter’s fundraising efforts to support a local hospital in England while a loved one goes through cancer treatment. The 12 sold out performances in Cranbrook and Kimberley, directed by Terry Miller with Calendar Girls Killeen Delorme, Susan Hanson, Joanne Wilkinson, Michelle McCue, Nola Doiron, Michelle LeMay, Sioban Staplin, Tylene Turner, Brigitte Franyo, Jennifer Inglis,
Barry Borgstrom, Thom McCaughey, Jerrod Bondy and Andy Rogers was a brilliant success. The stage play also took on a charitable side with 10% of ticket sales and 100% of cast calendar profits dedicated to EKFH for cancer care. This week Liz Adler, Past President of The Off Center Players and Terry Miller, Calendar Girls Director presented EKFH with a gift of $1,570 for the regional hospital’s oncology unit. The donation also took on an extra special meaning as the two presented the gift in memory of Jenna Elizabeth Homeniuk of Kimberley.

An electrical fire in June destroyed the school’s books and supplies and, as future teachers, the students believed it was important to help them get back up and running.
