The RVR/Sport is powe­ red by a fourcylinder engine and is available with front- or all-wheel drive.

Cranbrook Mitsubishi added philanthopy to a great promotion recently. After purchasing a new vehicle, Danielle St. Jean and Brian Evans were informed that they were the lucky winners of $10,000 from the dealership.

The dealership then matched that amount with another $10,000 to the lucky couple to donate to a charity of their choice. The pair decided that the East Kootenay Regional Hospital Psychiatry Unit’s recreation department was the right place for the donation.

As incredible as it may seem, the small Kia brand that landed on our shores only a couple of decades ago is already a full-fledged fa­mily of vehicles. And this year, it shows up as an important competitor in the luxury sedan segment with its all-new K900 full-size car.

But let’s have a look at Kia’s whole line-up of vehicles, starting with the smaller Rio. This popular and oh-so-affordable subcompact is available as a stylized sedan or as an equally impressive five-door hatchback. Both cars are powered by a very competent four-cylinder engine and frontwheel drive. Motorists looking for a different kind of vehicle will want to consider the uniquely desi­g­ned Soul, which was recently refreshed. This front-wheel drive

will soon be available as an electric vehicle as well. The Kia lineup continues with the very popular Forte, which is offered as a great looking sedan, a superb coupe, or a new five-door sporty hatchback, the Forte5.

Next is the very successful Optima, a se­ dan that sports a modern design. This mid-sized four-cylinder front-wheel drive is also of­fered with a turbocharge option or as a hybrid model.

Just before launching the K900, Kia introduced a new mid-sized luxury car, the Cadenza, a V-6powered front-wheel drive.

By the way, Kia has a few interesting SUVs to offer, including the well-designed Sportage with frontor all-wheel drive, and the re­cently redesigned So­rento, available with a four-cylinder or V-6 engine and ca­ pable of carrying se­ven peo­ple on board. Kia has also recently re­in­troduced its po­pular Se­dona minivan; it is now sporting a to­­tally new look.

Honda is still one of our favourite brands

Dodge, Chrysler’s performance brand A few things are changing at Chrysler, especially the name.

The whole company was recently renamed Fiat Chrysler Automobiles or FCA. But one thing that is not going to change is the performance image carried by its Dodge brand. The Dodge line-up begins with the Dart, a very recent compact sedan known for its sporty versions, including the 2.4-litre fourcylinder GT model.

As FCA gets ready to phase out the mid-sized Avenger sedan, the Charger gets a totally new front end; it will look a lot like the one found on the Dart. Yet the Charger retains its original fourdoor body and the aggressive look you might have noticed on many Charger police cars. The Charger w i l l still

be offered with rear- or all-wheel drive and Pentastar V-6 or HEMI V-8 power.

Another Dodge favourite is the retro-looking Challenger mid-sized coupe, which gets a minor facelift for the coming year. Other­ wise, it remains pretty much the same except for a revised interior. It will still be a rear-wheel drive, while a more powerful V-6 Pentastar is available in addition to the 5.7- and 6.4-litre HEMI V-8s.

The mid-sized Journey CUV with four-cylinder or V-6 power and front- or all-wheel drive (the Jour­ney is the most popular CUV in Ca­nada!); and the legen­ dary Grand Caravan mi­nivan with Pentastar V-6 power and front-wheel drive. If you are looking for a bigger or more robust people mover, consider the rear- or all-wheel drive V-6 or V-8 Durango.

Although Chrysler’s light trucks are now marketed under the Ram brand name, we will point out that the Ram 1500 pick-up is now available with a turbodiesel V-6 engine.

Without a doubt, Honda, the great Japanese brand of cars and light trucks, remains one of the perennial favourites of North American buyers. Although many of its ve­hicles are built in North America, they re­t ain the quality and distinction that established the brand’s reputation.

Honda is tackling the new automotive year with a totally redesigned Fit sub-compact. A unique electric version of the Fit should be offered soon. The Honda Civic is still the brand’s most popular car. Available as a sedan or coupe, this compact car needs little introduction. It is appreciated for its peppy engine and solid road handling. In some American states, it can be powered by a natural gas engine, while the hybrid version is available as a special order.

Speaking of hybrids, Honda’s mid-sized car, the Accord, is also available with hy­ brid power — again, as a special order. There is also a station-wagonish version of the Ac­cord, cal­led the

Cross­­tour; it is easily recognizable with its sleek fast­­back roof.

The Honda Clarity FX is only available in a few select states; it is a very special electric vehicle that runs on hydrogen. If you are a fan of small sporty cars, why not ask your Honda dealer to see the incredible CR-Z coupe, a hybrid sub-compact powered by a four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor.

You might be interested by the very popular CR-V, one of the country’s favourite compact SUVs. Its bigger companion is the Pilot, a mid-sized truck powered by a V-6 engine and frontor all-wheel drive. Small families will appreciate the mighty Odyssey minivan, whose V-6 engine can run on three cylinders at cruising speed.

Volkswagen’s future has never looked brighter Volkswagen is the veteran German manufacturer that has set its mind on becoming the biggest car maker in the world.

It in­tends to reach that goal by offering some of the most interesting and fun-to-drive cars and light trucks on the market.

The star of the Volks show is the all-new Golf and, most especially, its sporty GTi version. The Golf is a front-wheel-drive compact that comes as a two-door or fourdoor or as a roomy wagon. It can be deli­vered with a gasoline engine or a thrifty diesel powerplant. The Eos coupe-convertible could be consi­ dered part of the Golf family, but it is much more sophisticated and therefore more expensive. The uniquely designed Beetle also uses Golf technology, but it comes in a cute retro pack-

age that should attract more than a couple of customers.

Next comes the Jetta line-up of cars. Big­ ger than the Golf, the Jetta includes a full-size trunk and sports a modern design.

But the Jetta is not as big as the most recent Pas­ sat, a car designed and built in North America for North Americans.

This sedan is considered to be a mid-sized car, and just like the Golf and the Passat, it can be delivered with a turbodiesel engine. The Passat is the only Volkswagen car available in a hybrid configuration.

Volkswagen also produces two interesting SUVs: the compact Tiguan and the more im­ pressive Touareg. While the Tiguan is only available with a four-cylinder en­ gine, the Touareg is available with a supercharged hy­brid V-6 or a unique turbodiesel V-6.

The Yukon, GMC’s most impressive SUV GMC is mostly known as GM’s light truck brand, but GMC also produces some interesting SUVs. One of them is the full-size Yukon, which was recently redesigned and even re-engineered. It now looks very much like the GMC Sierra pick-up truck that was unveiled last year, but with its own specific body parts.

All Yu­kons are four-door light trucks with large station-wagon bodies.

Inside, the Yukon also shows a redesigned interior, including a completely redone dashboard. And the new Yukon definitely has more luxury than the outgoing model. There is even a high-luxury version of the truck, the Denali, which offers more amenities and a stronger engine.

Indeed, under the hood of the new Yukon is a completely redone 5.3-litre V-8 engine featuring a direct injection fuel sys-

tem for more economy. This engine is hooked to a six-speed automatic transmission and ondemand four-wheel drive. If the Denali version is chosen, the engine will be the more powerful 6.2-litre V-8, also with direct fuel injection and automatic transmission, but with all-wheel drive.

Yukons are known to be great trailer-pulling SUVs, but they are also fantastic people movers that can carry up to nine passengers with their luggage!

GMC also offers a smaller SUV, the compact Terrain, which is also available in the luxury Denali trim package.
