Festival promoter seeks greater city support Jennifer Blyth Victoria News
The producer of several major downtown Victoria festivals is calling on the City of Victoria to increase its support for free family festivals held in the city. “This isn’t a matter of wanting the city to spend more money on festivals as much as where the city directs arts funding it already has”, John Vickers, executive director of the Victoria International Busk“I just want ers Festival Society and the Victoria Chalk Festival, said fairness and right in a news release. “When you have an event now the Buskers like the free admission Busk- Festival doesn’t ers Festival that requires year-round effort to produce, receive fairness.” $9,000 in direct funding just – John Vickers doesn’t cut it, particularly when you consider just how much arts funding the city distributes.” Vickers said the 10-day Buskers Festival injects millions of dollars into the local economy, attracting both locals and visitors. However, it receives much less city funding than similar programs in cities like Halifax and Edmonton, and less than local summer programming at Beacon Hill Park’s Cameron Bandshell, for example, through Vickers said when he attended, he saw few people at the venue. “Why aren’t we supporting mass public arts events that are really making a difference in our downtown?” he asked.
It’s race weekend! Catrin Jones is the local favourite in this Sunday’s Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon. Last year’s women’s winner, Jones has won the marathon twice in the last four years. A pace of her own
Marathon fast facts
Catrin Jones never reckoned to be a marathon runner. Now she’s the one to beat at Sunday’s marathon race Kevin Laird Victoria News
Catrin Jones’ running heroes don’t include the likes of marathon greats Meb Keflezighi, Ryan Hall, Shalane Flanagan or Rita Jeptoo. No, it’s much more personal. Jones, 35, the reigning woman’s champion in the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon, gets her biggest inspiration from recreation runners who challenge the 42.2-kilometre torture test. “People who inspire me the most is anyone who takes on a marathon or a race, people who are out there running sometimes up to six hours. I admire those people more than anything,” said Jones, who has won the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon twice in the last four years. Jones will be lining up on Sunday for the 35th edition of the Victoria race, hoping to defend the women’s title. Last year the Fairfield resident finished in an impressive two hours, 43 minutes and three seconds, besting her 2010 winning time by more than nine minutes. In 2013, Jones went on quite a tear. She took part in more than 20 races competing in everything from half-marathons to ultra-marathons. Along with the Victoria marathon win, she placed third at
the Vancouver Marathon, won the Whistler and Comox halfmarathons and placed second at the Canadian championships in Ottawa. To top it off, she took part in the World Francophone Games, representing Canada. A pelvis injury has slowed her pace this year, but she has quietly been training with coach Jim Finlayson, getting stronger and ready to take on the next challenges. “Every race is an opportunity to improve,” Jones said in an interview this week. “I look at a way to improve for the next race and the race after that.” And it’s that attitude which has taken her to the elite level in the sport. Jonathan Foweraker, elite athlete co-ordinator for the marathon, said having someone local compete at the elite level is not only good for the race but the running community. “She’s a wonderful athlete,” he said. “As you are out on your run, you often see her training as well. It’s very encouraging.” Jones started marathon running in 2006 when she was 27, after a career as a competitive swimmer. Since then she has competed in 17 marathons and has expectations to do more as well as more trail ultra-marathons. “Every race I try I enjoy (running more) and learn to run

I don’t think I’d be running if I wasn’t living here.” It’s not surprising then that the Victoria marathon is one of her favourite races. “It’s not as overwhelming like the big races, but you still get good competitors,” Jones said. “And I suppose because it is
my hometown it’s a little closer to the heart. I go run in my neighbourhood for a few hours and I’m good to go.” Can she repeat as champion? “I’d love to, but I have no idea. I’m going into the race with a completely open mind. I’m just thrilled to be able to run this year again.” klaird@vblackpress.ca
The Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon being held Sunday will cause widespread road closures in many parts of Victoria. The 42.2-kilometre marathon route will start in downtown Victoria on Menzies Street and wind through the downtown core into James Bay and Beacon Hill Park, along Dallas Road to Gonzales Bay. It will proceed into Fairfield, Oak Bay and Uplands before the turnaround. The route then returns the same way. ••• Sunday’s event is actually four races – marathon, halfmarathon, 8K and kids’ race – with a total of about 11,500 runners expected to take part. The same holds true for the free Chalk Art Festival, Vickers added, saying this year the city provided $2,000 in direct funding to that festival, which also required months of planning and attracted thousands downtown. “I am not looking for the city of Victoria to pay all the bills, on behalf of families and our community, I just want fairness and right now the Buskers Festival doesn’t receive fairness,” he said, adding the Buskers Society is closing its downtown office and relocating to his residence. However, Mayor Dean Fortin noted that overall the city distributes about $528,000 annually in grants and services through its Arts and Culture program, including to local festivals, in addition to its
funding for the Royal and McPherson theatres. The online criteria for the city’s Festival Investment Grants notes that grants are provided through four funding streams: Community Celebration Grants; New Festival Grants; Established Festival Grants; and Signature Festival Grants. The city will not fund more than 25 per cent of the overall operating costs of the festival and applications are evaluated on factors such as artistic merit, economic impact, community impact and involvement, and organizational effectiveness. Each year, groups are invited to make application and each is evaluated through a fair and open process, Fortin said, noting “there are some pretty strong festivals in the city.” Despite cutbacks in similar funding at the provincial
and federal levels, “the city has fought to maintain that investment and continue to support our local arts,” Fortin said. “We look forward to his (Vickers) application every year.” He also questioned Vickers’ characterization of the public concert program, noting that 43 concerts were scheduled at the Cameron Bandshell through latst spring and summer with attendance of about 17,000. The performances are generally wellliked and well-received, Fortin said. The Buskers Festival also typically receives funding from additional sources, such as the Capital Regional District, provincial and federal governments, plus sponsors such as Tourism Victoria and private businesses.

Penalty points added for distracted driving Talking on your handheld phone or fiddling with a music player while driving will cost you three penalty points in addition to a $167 fine, effective Oct. 20. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton announced the additional penalty points Wednesday, making it the same as the penalty for texting and driving. Penalty points are also added for infractions such as watching a video or programming a phone’s GPS system. Anton said the B.C. govern-
ment is also reviewing its fines and could increase them. Penalty points remain on a driving record for five years, and result in a $175 increase in insurance as soon as they exceed three points. Fines and points for two distracted driving tickets in a year add up to at least $634. At nine points, the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles considers licence suspension. Anton said there were 51,000 tickets issued last year for distracted driving of all kinds.
“Ticket volumes show us that more drivers are ticketed for talking on an electronic device than for texting and driving, and so that is where we decided to start with the new penalty points,” Anton said. Distracted driving is the second biggest cause of fatal vehicle accidents, with an average 88 people killed per year from 2009 to 2013. That compares to 105 deaths attributed to speeding and 86 due to alcohol or drug impairment.

OUR VIEW
Race deserves our support Marathon running to most of us is mystifying. Why anyone would put themselves through a 42.2-kilometre torture test is beyond comprehension. Yet, runners will tell you about the challenge; some to test their abilities against worthy competitors; others just the simple pleasure of running. There will be as many reasons at the starting line for the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon as there are runners – and we expect many. The event Since the event’s humble aids health, beginnings 35 years ago when 700 participated in charitable the first race, it has grown causes and into one of Victoria’s premier events, drawing sense of more than 11,000 runners community this weekend. The Victoria Marathon Society conducted an economic impact analysis to estimate the economic benefit of the 2010 event. The result was a $7.1-million impact over marathon weekend. But there’s more to the marathon than can be justified in dollars. They are the promotion of health, fitness and a sense of community. Over the years, the marathon (which actually consists of four races: marathon, halfmarathon, 8K road race and kids’ run) has collectively raised millions for local charities from literacy initiatives to amateur sports. This year runners were given the opportunity to raise personal pledges for 22 charities. It’s a laudable cause. And runners deserve our applause for such noble efforts. Most runners have spent weeks – if not months – preparing for this weekend’s races. That’s a lot of sweat and determination. But the biggest winners this weekend will not be the elite runners who come from far and wide. Instead, our community wins with this kind of event, not only from an economic windfall, but on a societal level also.

Clearing up sewage issue I would like to respond to a few points made in a recent letter to the editor on Oct. 3 entitled, Public deserves to be consulted. This letter states that the Capital Regional District did not consult the public when it came up with the current, approved wastewater treatment plan. In fact, the CRD spent more than 10 years consulting the public throughout the region on a sewage treatment plan. It was this consultation which led the CRD to develop the wastewater treatment plan that was approved by the province. Whether the plan is implemented, it is a cost effective and environmentally sound plan which exceeds federal and provincial regulations and meets the long-term needs of our region. The approved treatment plant provides capacity for the region until well into 2065 for a unit capacity cost that is significantly lower than the rate of other comparable plants. The letter implies that the planned 18-kilometre residual solids conveyance pipe would be costly to maintain and expensive to operate due to pumping costs. The truth is there are already hundreds of kilometres of conveyance pipes currently underground throughout the region. This conveyance pipe would be no different and the costs for the pumping would be
approximately $55,000 per year. By locating the Resource Recovery Center at Hartland the CRD is able to utilize approximately $2 million per year of landfill gas in the process. When compared to the $55,000 per year to pump the residual solids to Hartland this resource recovery provides significant savings to the CRD. The letter states the treatment plant uses old technology, doesn’t address pharmaceuticals in our wastewater and has limited energy recovery potential. This is simply not the case. The program was not developed to address storm water infiltration as this is being done at the municipal level as part of their infrastructure planning. Should the plan be abandoned, the CRD will work closely with municipalities to develop a different approach and public consultation would certainly be part of that initiative. The Seaterra Commission will implement whichever plan ultimately the CRD and the province approve and the taxpayers of the core area are willing to pay for. Albert Sweetnam, Program director, Seaterra Program
We have become an elitist society When I was young and carefree
I believed that I lived in a democracy and had civil rights. Today, I am older and much wiser with experience. I know that the police can pluck a law abiding citizen off the street on some pretext and do with him as they will. I know that there is a farce called the police complaint commission. I know that lawyers, even the top civil rights lawyers will brush you off if they don’t see a good profit to be made. We have become an elitist society, based on material wealth. Money is power. The Golden Rule “do unto others as you will have them do unto you” applies only to the “lower classes”. The elite may do unto others as they will. Frank Farkas Esquimalt

James Bay trio eyeing international rugby test Andrea Peacock Victoria News
The Americas Rugby Championship kicks off this weekend in Langford. Canada, the United States, Uruguay and Argentina will fight for the trophy in three doubleheader games on Oct. 11, 15 and 19 at Westhills Stadium, including three players from James Bay. This will be Greater Victoria’s third time hosting the tournament. “This is likely the last time we’re going to host it,” said Bryan Kelly, Rugby Canada coordinator. “The tournament
won’t be happening next year, because the Rugby World Cup is happening.” For the last two years, the Canada A team has come in second in the tournament. Kelly thinks the team has a good chance of coming in first this time. “We’ve got a really good team this year, and I think they have a good shot. I think they’re really trying to win it this year.” Players who call James Bay home are Pat Parfrey, Nick Blevins and Jordan Wilson-Ross. These three men along with 23 others make up the Canada A team. “These players are our best
domestic base players,” said Kelly. “They’re not our international pros that play in the UK and France, but these are the best athletes that we have in Canada trying to show what they’ve got, and trying to get onto the senior men’s national team that’s building towards the World Cup next year.” Tickets range from $19 to $150, and each ticket includes two games. Kickoffs on Oct. 11 and 19 are at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and kickoffs on Oct. 15 are at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Tourism Victoria and at eventsrugbycanada.ca.

Royals slip past Portland Winterhawks The Victoria Royals scored the first five goals of the game en route to a 6-2 victory over the Portland Winterhawks on Monday night in Western Hockey League play. The contest marked the first encounter between the two teams since Portland knocked Victoria out of the 2014 WHL Playoffs. The Royals tallied three goals in the middle frame with two highlight reel markers. Joe Hicketts finished off an Austin Carroll pass, while
Mitch Skapski buried a behind the back feed from Regan Nagy. Victoria opened the scoring when rookies Nagy and Matthew Campese recorded their first career WHL markers in the first period. Both teams would score in the final frame with Jack Walker tallying for the Royals, and Oliver Bjorkstrand and Anton Cederholm scoring for the Winterhawks. The Royals begin a six-game road trip tonight (Oct. 10).

VITAL SIGNS
Cost of living city’s biggest obstacle
‘Report card’ shines light on region’s successes and struggles
Youth Vital Signs What’s great about living in Greater Victoria? Here’s what local youth had to say: 1. Natural Environment –34.8 per cent 2. Parks - 31.1 per cent 3. Festivals and Events – 28 per cent 4. Climate – 25.6 per cent 5. Air Quality – 25.6 per cent 6. Walkability – 22.6 per cent
Jennifer Blyth Victoria News
The cost of living has clearly emerged as the No. 1 concern in the minds of people living and working in the Capital Region. The Victoria Foundation revealed this and many other informational nuggets at Tuesday’s launch of this year’s Vital Signs report at the Hotel Grand Pacific. In the “community report card,” 52.4 per cent of respondents identified cost of living as Victoria’s chief issue, up from 47 per cent last year, Victoria Foundation executive officer Sandra Richardson said in an interview, noting one-quarter said they were working more than one job. The ninth edition of the report compiles research and survey responses that offer information about issues affecting the region, with the goal of providing insight, prompting debate and inspiring philanthropy. This year’s Victoria Capital Region Community Wellbeing Survey, based on the conceptual framework of the Canadian Index of Wellbeing from the University of Waterloo, measures the subjective wellbeing of Greater Victorians in eight quality of life categories: community vitality, democratic engagement, education, environment, healthy populations, leisure and culture, living standards and time use. Recognizing that traditional markers like GDP don’t paint the whole picture of community well-being, the index bridges the gap by using primary research to also reflect areas such as social and environmental well-being, Richardson said. “I think it gives the report a whole lot of extra fibre,” Richardson said. “It really mirrors some of the things people have been telling us for years. You’re going to find this is our best report yet.” Richardson was pleased with the depth of feedback from the 16,000 distributed surveys, which enjoyed a return rate of about 14 per cent. In addition to cost of living, issues of concern included related issues of housing (21.1 per cent), mental illness (20.3 per cent), homelessness (16.5 per cent), employment (15.5 per cent), and health care (14.7 per cent). Additional issues rounding out the top 12 included municipal amalgamation, addictions, transportation, poverty, sewage treatment and community planning/development. Identifying the positive aspects of life in the region as well as concerns, the natural environment topped the list of the best things about living in the Greater

The Victoria Foundation’s annual Vital Signs report says cost of living is the number 1 issue in the region. Victoria at 47 per cent, followed by climate (38.6 per cent) air quality (23.2 per cent), friends and family (21.1 per cent), a feeling of safety (19 per cent) and walkability (18.5 per cent). Capitalizing on these and other positive aspects of living in the region, 88 per cent of respondents identified themselves as being happy, 87 per cent feel supported by loving family, companions and/or friends, 82 per cent feel somewhat or very connected to the community and 76 per cent rated their general sense of mental well-being as high – up significantly from 69 per cent last year, Richardson said. As a significant tool to the community, Vital Signs is open access information, meaning other community groups can use the data to dig deeper, or take up an issue they feel strongly about, Richardson said. “Groups are looking at us as one of the
places that knows the community well and can make these connections.” Ultimately, the report helps expose areas of interest and concern in the community, including gaps where funds and programs are needed. “I think we’re starting to really see the impact of how the report is being used,” Richardson said. In 2012, the Vital Signs cover questioned “Do our kids have a healthy future?” looking at issues such as activity, obesity and Type 2 diabetes. From that, the Victoria Foundation joined with the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence to pilot the “ABC’s of Physical Literacy” for 175 children at the Cridge Centre and today, the initiative counts 3,300 participants throughout the region. The impact of these and other initiatives, plus the awareness raised by these discussions, is seen in this year’s numbers: Vitals Signs reports that 91 per cent of youth ages 12 to 19 reported spending
their leisure time being physically active or moderately active, up from 77 per cent in 2012. And from last year’s Vital Signs Food Security issue, a new food funding network emerged in which 43 partnerships granted $1.6 million to support 93 local food security initiatives. Also released is Youth Vital Signs, which gives youth a voice about the issues important to them. At the same time, one of the interesting results from both reports is how in sync both youth and older adults are about the issues of the day. “They really see things from a very similar point of view,” Richardson said. Put the report to good use How should Victorians use this year’s Vital Signs report? First, use it to start conversations – talk about what’s behind the data and what people are experiencing in our community, said Richardson. If moved by what you read, use the report as a catalyst for action, sharing the information – and your reaction to it – with friends, colleagues, neighbours or elected officials. Richardson also encourages people to use the Victoria Foundation’s resources to get to know the issues and organizations in their community. Request a guest speaker for your group or organization, learn about the many organizations in our community working to improve it, and what you can do to help. editor@vicnews.com

Das Rheingold scales new operatic peaks Opera fans are in for a rare treat this month as Pacific Opera Victoria and an international team of artists presents Canada’s first “stand-alone” production of Wagner’s Das Rheingold at the Royal Theatre. Taking to the stage Oct. 16, 18 and 24 at 8 p.m., with an Oct. 26 matinee at 2:30 p.m., the prologue to Wagner’s monumental Ring Cycle introduces audiences to a cast of giants and river nymphs, dwarves who toil beneath the earth and gods that rule from the mountaintop hall of Valhalla. Pacific Opera Victoria has scaled Wagnerian peaks before, with two acclaimed productions of the Flying Dutchman, but Das Rheingold is a little different. “With this production we stretch to the maximum our growing mastery of the art of the possible,” explains artistic director Timothy Vernon. “The Ring is mature Wagner – the product of transcendent
genius – the Wagner for which people rearrange their lives to travel and experience what many find to be its inexhaustible splendours.” Dutch director Wim Trompert returns to Canada to direct his fifth POV production, having recently directed Rheingold op de Rijn (Rheingold on the Rhine), an international production of Das Rheingold, performed in and on the Rhine, using a 13-metre barge converted into a 500-seat opera house. German designer Hans Winkler makes his POV debut as Das Rheingold set designer while Canadian Nancy Bryant returns to POV for her fourth production as costume designer. Bringing Wagner’s “Wotan” to life will be acclaimed Canadian baritone John Fanning (POV’s The Flying Dutchman), a veteran of 10 seasons at the Metropolitan Opera. Joining Fanning will be a familiar cast of Canadian singers, plus four making their
company debuts in this production. Wagner’s Ring is monumental in scope and scale, with a North American perception that it can be performed only in the largest opera houses. In Europe, however, many small companies produce the work using orchestral reductions when their orchestra pits are too small to accommodate the large number of players called for in Wagner’s score. POV’s production, using a Wagner-approved reduction by Alfons Abbass, fits the opera into Victoria’s Royal Theatre. A one-act opera with no intermission, Das Rheingold is performed in German with English surtitles. Uncle Wiggly’s takes on Memphis It’s been 35 years since Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues Band introduced Victoria to their infectious brand of party blues during their first gig at the University of Victoria’s SUB Pub. Today, after more than three decades, they’re still opening new doors. After winning the regional Memphis Blues Challenge in White Rock this summer, the band is preparing to represent B.C. at the 2015 International Blues Challenge, Jan. 20 to 24 in Memphis, Tenn, competing against bands from around the world. To help send them on their way, the Victoria Blues Society is hosting a Memphis-Bound Fundraiser and Silent Auction Oct. 24 at the Tallyho Sports Bar. The fun begins at 8 p.m. and tickets are $20, available at the Tallyho Bar, Lyle’s Place and at the door on show night. Through the years, Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues Band has played across much of Canada, released two albums, signed to RCA records and shared the stage with legends like Muddy Waters, Joe Cocker, James Cotton and Koko Taylor. The band’s initial album earned sales of well over 25,000 copies nationally, supporting their 2010 induction into the Victoria Music Hall of Fame as most influential blues group from 1950 to 1980. After an extended hiatus, Uncle Wiggly’s regrouped in 2001 and today is still going strong with all but one of the original band members: Hank Lionhart (Uncle Wiggly), lead vocals; Norm (the Doctor) Piercy on bass; Mark (Westcoast) Comerford on guitar; Dave (the Duck) Rowse on sax; Brent (Watermelon) Hutchinson on sax; and Piercy’s son Tyler (Kid Cadillac) Piercy on drums. Led by Comerford, the band continues to write most of their own songs, last year releasing the CD Still Burnin’ It Up. editor@vicnews.com

Ford offers four engines and even the smallest 2.7L EcoBoost will still tow up to 3.8 tonnes. The cab is quieter, yet larger. The floor is flat yet has more storage compartments. The dash is less cluttered yet offers more information. Do you sense a theme here? Consider that the design phase of this truck took four years and the testing was the most intense ever. The result? A list of improvements a hockey rink long – that’s a fact. Now, how will they all work together? Well Ford’s claims will have to play out on roads, across Canada, in the coming years. Kia has an Electric Soul By Bob McHugh
Kia joins the growing list of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers with Soul EV, a clever adaptation of its tall 5-door compact with the funky styling. Although still a small slice of the overall car market, EV sales are growing rapidly and so is the public charge station infrastructure that’s crucial to its success, especially in urban areas. A digital readout showed 187 km of driving range available as we headed out on a test loop around Metro Vancouver. And after about 30 minutes of, no special treatment, driving with frequent stops, starts, hill climbs and descents, the Soul EV showed 162 km was still available. That's relevant, as the Soul EV’s officially rated driving range is 149 km. In addition to being quiet and fuel-free, Soul EV effectively matches the practical user features of its gasoline counterpart. It can seat 4 to 5 passengers and has the same large rear cargo area. Kia's polymer (electrolyte) lithium ion battery pack is compact and easier to hide than others, as is can be molded into different shapes. In Soul EV it's centrally fitted under the seats and a raised rear floor pan. The gasoline engine is replaced by a 109 horsepower liquid-cooled AC synchronous permanent magnet electric motor that can generate a whopping
210 lb-ft of torque. That's 59 lb-ft more than the 2.0-litre gasoline engine version of Soul. Standing starts were not as jumpy as other electric vehicles tend to be and the overall performance of the electric drivetrain was impressively smooth. Charger ports for the battery pack are hidden behind a hinged cover in the front grille. The smaller port accepts either a 120 volt (level 1) or a 240 volt (level2) charge connector. A portable level 1 unit is stored in the vehicle and Kia Canada will also provide Soul EV buyers with a level 2 charge unit (made by Bosch) for home installation, free of charge. The charger unit can also be used to pre-heat or pre-cool the Soul EV, while plugged into the grid. You can also program it to start or complete charging at a certain time. The level 1 charger plugs into any electrical outlet, but can take up to 24-hours to fully recharge the w battery pack. A level 2 charger (with 30 amp service) cuts the maximum recharge time to under

5-hours. And a level 3 fast charge station can pump-in an 80 per cent charge in less than 30 minutes. We didn’t take it out on the freeway, but the Soul EV seemed very stable (it’s heavier then the gas engine Soul) and Kia claims a top speed of 145 km/hour. Kia also claims that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hour faster (by 4 seconds) than a Nissan Leaf. It’s agile and peppy, with lots of initial get up and go, but it’s also no dragster. The two-tone gray interior theme came with attractive and contrasting blue stitching. Extensive use of bio-friendly interior materials also makes Soul EV the most eco-friendly vehicle made by Kia. It feature materials derived from organic substances such as sugar cane, corn, cellulose, and wood powder. Soul EV is only available through selected Kia dealers in major Canadian urban centres (Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver). Unlike Quebec and Ontario, however, BC’s incentive program for eco-friendly vehicles ran out of cash back in March of this year. Soul EV does qualify for an $8,000 federal government rebate and that certainly helps make the purchase price more palatable. The Kia Soul EV definitely rocks and is a must-drive for anyone considering an EV in this price range.

City of light shines brightly on dream machines By Zack Spencer
Paris, France – The Paris Auto Show is one of those must-visit events for those of us charged with reporting on the latest and greatest new vehicles. So many manufacturers now develop products for a world market so these early European shows often offer a glimpse of what’s coming next to our shores. Here are five machines that caught my eye.
Lamborghini Asterion

Let’s start with a dream machine. The Lamborghini Asterion concept car was certainly a showstopper.
Sidestepping the current design approach of angular shapes with hard edges, this new Lambo has a more curvaceous look that almost mimics a front engine car. What is wedged in the middle of this exotic is a hybrid system that marries a naturally aspirated 5.2L V10 engine with three electric motors (Two in the front producing all wheel drive and another in the transmission for full electric drive capability), producing a whopping 910hp with acceleration that will see this car run to 100km in just three seconds. The Asterion is capable of running on just electric power for roughly 30km and, providing silent driving in a wickedly sexy machine. This is a just a concept at this point but with
mounting pressure on car makers to reduce carbon output and the fact the Porsche brand (Another VW Group brand) already has the 918 hybrid, this looks like it could make it to market within the next few years.
VW Golf Alltrack
Ok, now back to earth. With the trend towards all-wheel-drive (AWD) gaining more and more momentum it was only a matter of time before cars previously without AWD start to appear with this option. Take the popular VW Golf wagon, soon to be available in Europe with AWD and a slightly higher ground clearance. Called the Alltrack, this more rugged
Lamborghini Asterion looking and capable VW will certainly appeal to buyers of the Subaru Outback or Audi Allroad. In North America, we don’t buy many

Imagine a pure electric, three-wheel, scooter-like vehicle, with a fixed roof, steering wheel and can drive up to 45km/h with 50km of electric range. The Toyota i-Road attracted big crowds when it was demonstrated at this year’s Paris Show. The small wheel at the rear of the i-Road pivots at low speed for amazing maneuverability, plus when driven at higher speeds the entire vehicle tilts over like a motorcycle with the front wheels rotating independently of each other. It looks odd and must feel odd to drive but the upside is covered driving, without a helmet, and emissions free transportation. The i-Road is being tested in Japan and will be used in the French city of Grenoble as part of a vehicle-sharing program. This type of vehicle already exists in Europe but the tilting and pivoting elements make it unique. This would not be popular on our wider roads in North America but the i-Road will fit right in on Europe’s busy streets.

The Chrysler Groups’ parent company Fiat is at it again, taking the best that its European brands have to offer and marrying them with American brands. The Fiat 500L has had a mild reception here in North America so now they have taken the same platform and produced the Jeep Renegade. To complete the circle, the same Renegade approach is being used with this Fiat 500X, basically, taking the same Jeep-like elements and making them into a Fiat. The 500X will be available with front wheel drive (FWD) or AWD and a variety of engine and transmission options in Europe. The engine choices have not been divulged for our market but expect to see the 170hp 1.4 turbo 4-cylinder and the 184hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engines here. The Fiat 500L has not been a hit for Fiat but, yet again, add a more rugged look and the sales will likely follow.
Volvo XC90
Will the introduction of an all-new, full-size XC90 SUV be enough to save Volvo here in North America? Time will tell but the crowds at the Volvo stand in Paris were packed with people combing over every pert of this attractive SUV. It has been over ten years since Volvo introduced the original XC90 and the years have not been good to this vehicle or the brand. Sales for the XC90 and Volvo in general have been pathetic in North America. This new XC90 has a lot going for it and Volvo hopes it will help revive the brand. The XC90 will be sold in Canada with AWD in the T6 or T8 engine variants. Both are turbocharged and supercharged and are matched to an 8-speed automatic. The T6 has 320hp and the T8 comes with an additional 80hp electric motor for improved power and efficiency. The three-row design remains intact but the interior is larger for more space. The dash is a standout with a vertical iPad-like application in the centre for class-leading connectivity and usability. The price of the T6 will start at $60,700 and the T8 will start at $73,400. If this short list this isn’t enough to satisfy your curiosity, check out my Paris gallery at drivewaybc.ca zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Contrary to general perception, most classic cars aren’t fragile flowers. In fact, many are anvil-tough, particularly American cars of the 1950s and 1960s, built with real Pennsylvania steel and very little plastic. But even these rolling bank vaults can be seriously screwed up by these five things: Non-use: This one is really is counterintuitive. When classic cars come to mind for many, the image of the trailer queen or museum piece looms large; in fact, most people think that these are the best cared-for cars. In actuality, they often turn out to be the most problematic cars when they are finally driven. Non-use is actually abuse — seals dry out and start to leak; gas gets stale and turns to varnish; batteries corrode when not removed; and tires get flat spots. Cars that are used and maintained on a regular basis, on the other hand, are often the happiest and most reliable old cars. Improper storage/rodents: This goes along with the above. Failure to drain fuel or use a stabilizer, not using jack stands, and making certain that anti-freeze is up to snuff all contribute to storage-related deterioration. But perhaps the most destructive force has four teeth and a naked tail — rats and mice, the same rodents that wiped out half the population of Europe by carrying Bubonic plague, can really mess with your classic car. They chew upholstery and insulation to make nests (in which they pee, poop and reproduce, not necessarily in that order), and worst of all, they chew on wiring harnesses where it isn’t apparent until something smokes or catches fire from behind the dash of your 1965 Mustang. Road Salt: Most everyone who has taken chemistry knows that the reaction between Sodium Chloride and steel yields iron oxide, more commonly known as rust. But few people truly realize how quickly the damage is done. Just one drive on a wet salty road will give your classic an ugly coating of surface rust on anything on the underside that is not well protected, like suspension parts, exhaust and even the frame. A season or two that lets salty mud penetrate the nooks and crannies of your car will almost certainly cause visible rust to erupt. And don’t think you’re immune because your car is fiberglass, there’s plenty of steel to rot away under the pretty plastic panels of your 1972 Corvette Stingray. Conversely, getting caught in the rain every now and then isn’t death for your classic, as long as nothing like carpets or trunk mats get soaked and stay wet. Some of the cleanest and most rust-free old cars we’ve seen come from the damp Pacific Northwest, where it snows little and road salt isn’t used. Old Tires: Most vintage cars don’t see 15,000 miles of use each year and, often, totally unsafe tires can look deceptively sound. In addition to tread wear, age, dry rot, flat spots and UV exposure can render tires unsafe. About six or seven years should be tops in terms of tire life, regardless of how the tires may look. A blowout or a thrown tread can not only threaten your life, it can severely damage your car severely as I found out first hand when an otherwise fine-looking tire threw a tread and put a football-sized dent in the lower quarter panel of a formerly pristine 1977 Datsun 280Z. Bad driving habits: The list of things that you can do to shorten the life of the major systems of a classic — from engine, transmission to differential — is long and beyond the scope of this article. But perhaps the most destructive thing you can do to a vintage car is to not let it warm up properly. I’ve witnessed tons of people who should know better start up a cold car and immediately zing it to the redline with the first shift. It’s painful to watch and even more painful to realize the harm that’s being done to the engine. Always drive gently until the car has reached normal operating temperature (usually around the mid-point of the temperature gauge). Rob Sass is the vice-president of content for Hagerty Insurance. Black Press
Clearly, I wasn’t ready to let it go. Even days before the completion of the 2013 Tour de Rock’s 1,100-kilometre bike ride down Vancouver Island as a media rider representing Black Press, I was already mentally preparing myself for reintegration back to normal life. There would be no more meals prepared for me every time I woke up, no more cycling through red lights, no more photographers at every stop and, worst of all, no more time spent with the team and families affected by cancer along the way. I knew it would be bitter pill to swallow, and it was. It still is. You can only ride for Cops for Cancer once, so signing up for an opportunity to be a member of the support crew to keep myself in the family was an easy one. I did so shortly after the tour ended last October even before, as I found out, applications weren’t yet being accepted. “Check back next year,” I was told. So I did, got accepted and sadly on Oct. 3, 2014 that journey ended when the 2014 Tour de Rock team cycled into Spirit Square in Victoria for the finale. With the support of Black Press who again graciously gave me the week off to be media co-ordinator and
Arnold Lim Reporting
photographer for the fundraiser as the tour travelled from Ucluelet south into Victoria, I witnessed the spirit of sacrifice necessary for the fundraiser in a way I don’t think I truly understood until I saw it. The dedication of Canadian Cancer Society staff members, fundraisers, teachers and principals, families affected by cancer, the support crew and of course the amazing riders was evident day in and day out in a way that I don’t think I fully appreciated when I rode last year. Truth be told, perhaps I had the best seat in the house to witness this as the tour traversed the undulating Island terrain where every member of the team, a team that included supporters from every community along the way, gave so much with no expectation in return. Somedays you are in front of the camera, some days you are behind but the importance of those behind the scenes weren’t quite as
obvious last year. From those in the laundry room folding clothes for the riders, staff working at a coffee shop to donate their tips that day, artists at home making hand-made gifts for the riders as they passed through their communities and kitchen staff peeling the potatoes that go into that evening’s dinner, the unseen can sometimes go unappreciated. But silent auction items don’t magically materialize on their own, bags don’t find their way to hotel rooms by accident and the incredible school assemblies don’t plan themselves. Having seen the gratitude children and families benefitting from the fundraising, what is being dubbed the “Island’s charity” is proving to be just that. Tour de Rock is a gathering of communities across the Island, raising funds by doing the work before and after the thank you’s had been doled out and the crowd had dispersed. Fundraisers like this are built on the shoulders of those we rarely hear about doing what they do every year, planning beforehand, running during and hauling it all away until the next year, and doing so undetected, with hearts the size of Vancouver Island beating in their chest. editor@vicnews.com

Foster parents needed in Victoria and Esquimalt
VicPD on lookout for next class of reserve constables
Do you have compassion for young people and feel you could be a strong and positive caregiver for children and youth in need? As many current foster parents approach retirement age, the B.C. Ministry of Children and Family development is looking for foster parents in Victoria and Esquimalt. Foster families are part of a team working to safely re-unite children with parents, place them with extended family, or help them make the transition to adoption. For more information, please go online to gov.bc.ca/foster or call the Foster Line toll-free at 1-800-6639999.
The Victoria Police Department is recruiting a new class of reserve constables. Reserve constables carry out a number of duties including community event and crime prevention programs. Last year, VicPD’s reserve constables contributed more than 6,350 hours of volunteer time in Victoria and Esquimalt. “The VicPD Reserve Constable program has a strong

Inspiring parents and children to be ‘heart-centred’ Meetup group among tools for parents looking to learn from others Angela Cowan News Gazette staff
For Colleen Adrian, helping other parents feel capable and confident in their parenting styles, helping them lead “authentic and heart-centred” lives, has become the driving passion in her life. To further that passion, she’s hosting a monthly Meetup group to bring parents together in a supportive and collaborative environment. Adrian, a retired nurse with her masters degree and over 20 years experience, has been writing about parenting, hosting workshops and coaching on a one-to-one basis for several years through her company Crystal Clear Living. She added the monthly meeting to “provide a place to create community and support for parents who are trying to do things differently.” “You can’t always parent children the same way (as others),” she says. “I think we have instincts about that, but there’s a lot of social pressure to do things a certain way. And there’s a lot of pressure for children to conform as well.” After giving birth to her son 10 years ago, Adrian left nursing to pursue alternative health practices.

She became a Reiki master and trained in specialized kinesiology and non-violent communication to learn to be the parent she had envisioned for herself. “I really wanted to change things, but I was finding it really hard. I went on quite an intense research journey myself.” Adrian is able to pass along the fruits of that research now, and teaches parents “how to get some clarity and access their own knowing.” “Sometimes we can be so hard on ourselves and think we’re bad parents,” she says. “(The meetup) gives a sense of not being alone.” Adrian focuses on giving parents effective communication and conflict resolution skills to strengthen their relationship with their children. “It’s about creating open, meaningful relationships with family. And it allows our children to stay connected and open-hearted. It’s about not being afraid to step out and be a Picasso or an Emily Carr. Not being afraid to just get out there and express yourself.” “We love our children so much and we really want them to live to their full potential.” The next monthly Meetup will be in the first week of November. Q:
I’m the only child (son) in our family with no ‘aging parent’ experience. I live in another province but have arranged to spend three weeks with them in the very near future. Can you tell me some signs that I should be aware of in case they shouldn’t be living alone any more?
A:
Some common signs that a move to a more supportive environment such as a retirement residence may be a good idea for your loved one(s), are: 1. Less active lifestyle and the tendency to stay home; becoming less socially engaged. 2. You notice a change in the quality of (their) communication or the frequency of communication. 3. You may see fewer invitations to their home and notice a change in visit patterns. 4. They have unopened bills and other mail. 5. Their home is unkempt, laundry or dishes are piling up. 6. They experience unexplained weight loss. 7. You notice unusual damage to their home or vehicle. 8. Bruises or other signs of trauma from falls or difficulty navigating around the house. If you do notice any of these signs, arrange a meeting with their family doctor. Depending upon the severity and extent of support required, start your research. A Senior Living Community may be an appropriate option, but certainly is not the only option. One very useful tool is the Seniors Serving Seniors publication. Helen Brown is your local Vancouver Island senior living expert. If you have any questions, or would like to chat, please contact Helen at Berwick Royal Oak, (250) 419-4012 or a email her at berwickroyaloak@berwickrc.com

Halloween costumes a challenge When my kids were small, the mere mention of Halloween stirred up a cauldron of angst. As the words, “What are you going to be for Halloween?” starting buzzing among the girls and their friends, I knew, inevitably, I would be called upon to create something obscure like a slug, or inappropriate Susan to the weather – “Yes! This delicate fairy needs to wear a coat!” – or just plain impossible. The low point was the year I “sewed” the aforementioned slug costume for my elder daughter. I can’t sew, and that pretty much sums up that experience. However, although my sewing skills never improved, I did get wiser. One year, a few months before the main event, I carefully considered the character Pippy Long Stocking. I mentioned Pippy and Halloween in the same breath, and it worked. Danica would LOVE to be Pippy! I bought a thrift store Pippy dress and red hair spray. I inserted a straightened coat hanger
into Danica’s hair, and then braided her long tresses around it. When Danica sewed her own patches onto the dress and apron, I felt like dropping to my knees in thanks. Sierra continued to grasp her childhood-long penchant for selecting one set of clothes and Lundy wearing them day after day, month after month. From her preschool adoration of a flowery, black-bodiced dress and Kindergarten addiction to Osh Kosh overalls, her fashion flair evolved in Grade One to a single pair of cut-off shorts with tattered tights and gumboots, and by this year, velour shirts and jeans. “So what do you want to be for Halloween?” I asked, crossing my fingers. “You know, ghosts are really exciting — you get to cut holes in a sheet and wear it over your head!” “I want to be a bat.” “A bat?” I said, trying to swallow my excitement. “But weren’t you a bat last year?” “Yup.”
I held my breath. “We, ah, might even have last year’s costume hanging around somewhere. The one you can wear a coat underneath.” “Yup.” You mean I don’t have to sew? I don’t have to traipse through drug stores and closets and dress-up boxes? I don’t have to cut and paste and plan? Bats are a really, really good thing. Maybe you could be one next year too, huh? Suddenly I liked Halloween! We zipped around the trick-or-treating block; the girls picked up several Caramilk bars (Danica doesn’t like chocolate so guess who got her bounty!) and did a trip through the Spook House. This was the first year the girls did Spook House. Sierra blazed through it, hoping to find something that would scare her, while Danica clung to my arm and squeezed her eyes shut at every corner. It was a fine evening. And when we got home I put away the Pippy costume, and began working right away on convincing Sierra to wear it next year. Susan Lundy is editor of Boulevard Magazine.
Balancing business and family: Q&A Colleen Lembcke has a full life running her own salon in Sooke (just moved from the West Shore) and jointly caring for her six children with her hubby.
Q How do you find time for
“you?”
A
I have to make time. It’s not easy, we have busy chaotic days, which is the normal in our house, so I just get out and do it. I don’t give into being tired. Playing soccer and exercising balances me. It’s not always the first thing I want to do at the end of a long day, and having six children makes it a challenge, but I know it’s my way of recharging, emotionally and physically.
Q
What are you reading right now? With your kids?
A
When I can find a few moments before falling asleep, I look forward to finishing my book, The KingMaker’s Daughter, by Philippa Gregory. With my children, we do most of our reading during homework time. For my son and I, we read books collected over the years with my girls: Dora the Explorer, Clifford, Sesame Street, Thomas the Tank Engine. I have great little helpers who seem to really capture the adventures in the stories!
Q
What is your favourite family activity to share together?
Photo contributed
Colleen Lembcke, seated with son William, 2, joins daughters Sarah, 12 (left); Kayleigh, 15; Danielle, 8; Breanna, 17, and Emma, 12.
A
We frequently visit Sooke Potholes in the summer. It’s so easy for us. We pack up the snacks and into the car for a quick 15 min. drive, for two hours of fun. But, if anything, my favourite activity is our free time spent together making dinner on Sunday. The girls help in the kitchen, bringing us together, and we have our girl talk.
Q
The part of your day you look forward to the most?
A
That would in the morning, 8:30 to 9:50 a.m. The girls are at school, and I have just over an hour before I start my day. Having one on one time with my son is awesome. The morning is almost the only time he will cuddle with his mommy, so I take it when I can get it!

Victoria market shows strong fall sales Local sales helped push the regional numbers to 565 sold properties in September Jennifer Blyth Victoria News
While house sale prices remain somewhat flat, a significant increase in sales has the Victoria Real Estate Board optimistic about local market. Victoria and Esquimalt sales helped push the regional numbers to 565 properties sold in September, an increase of 16 per cent over the same month last year. And the quarter ending in September shows a 15 per cent increase in the number of sales overall compared to the same quarter in 2013, Victoria Real Estate Board president Tim Ayres said this week. “We haven’t seen sales like this in September since 2009,” Ayres said in announcing the numbers. “The balanced market conditions we’ve seen over the last seven months mean property prices are stable, so it might be more comfortable for buyers and sellers to make a move because they know that property values are predictable.” This predictability means buyers know if they need to wait to find the right house, they needn’t worry about quickly rising prices, and sellers know that if they’re priced right, they’ll likely find a buyer. The Multiple Listing Service Home Price Index benchmark value for a single family home in the Victoria Core this time last year was $550,900. This month the benchmark value increased to $556,200. The benchmark price for Greater Victoria condos sat at $287,100 this September, compared to $283,900 in September 2013, while the bench-

The real estate market in Victoria and Esquimalt are seeing positive returns this fall. mark for townhouses showed a marginal increase to $401,500 in September 2014 from $400,000 in 2013. In this diverse market with a good mix of both entry-level and luxury residences, single-family homes and multi-family properties, Ayres hasn’t noticed a single sector really outperforming others; the key seems to be in pricing the property appropriately, he said. At the same time, Victoria does seem to show a renewed interest in condominiums. “The people I talk to that are in condos are definitely noticing an

increase in demand or an least interest that they haven’t seen for awhile,” Ayres said. “If the projects are smart and they pay attention to what people want, they are going to continue to do well.” Looking forward, Ayres anticipates more people in larger markets – Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and to some extent the prairie cities – selling their homes and moving west. “I think it’s only a matter of time before we see some of them (coming to the Island.) Locally, Ayres expects the busy
fall to continue for realtors. “It wouldn’t surprise me to see a busier October than we’ve seen in a few years,” he said. “Usually you have until about the last week of November before things start to slow down (for the holidays),” he said, noting that even then, those looking to sell benefit from the typically reduced number of homes on the market. “Things always open up in the fall and early in the new year; there’s definitely people looking and generally less competition.” editor@vicnews.com

The Robert Bateman Centre and Union Club of B.C. will host a three-course fall salmon lunch on Oct. 25 in support of the Robert Bateman Centre’s children and nature programs. Union Club executive chef Christopher Moore will introduce guests to a selection of local dishes, inspired by the arrival of fall salmon in the region. Bateman will then lead a discussion on the importance of connecting with nature, before Goldstream Park interpreters take guests on a walking tour of the park where they will learn
about the salmon lifecycle. Complimentary bus transportation from the Union Club to Goldstream Provincial Park will be provided. Children are welcome to join their parents or grandparents. The luncheon takes place at Union Club of B.C., 805 Gordon St. Ticket prices are $95 for adults and $55 for children. To reserve a spot, please call the Union Club of B.C. at 250-384-1511. editor@vicnews.com

Drive What you can’t see is the 317 kgs that the ‘15 F-series has lost, thanks to that aluminum body and the increased use of high-strength steel in the frame – but, you can certainly feel it while driving. The truck is nimbler, has less wash in the corners and simply handles better. The cab is virtually silent and for comfort, the HVAC is split side-toside, front and rear. The hood and side windows have dropped in profile for better visibility, while the size, colours and quality of the computer generated gauges and controls simplifies operation while driving. I towed with the new truck and its manners are good if not improved. In part, this is assisted by the long list of towing features like trailer sway control; tow/haul mode; Dynamic Hitch Assist, SelectShift transmission and better tow mirrors. The all-new Ford F-150 graces the front of Driveway this week as it looks to maintain its constant premier position as the truck of choice. What do its rivals have to do to make a bigger mark in sales?

differential locker has been added. This truck churns mud better than ever. Verdict Payload is up (to 900 kgs) and so is towing (approx. 5.5 tonnes) yet overall body weight is down by 317 kgs. But from what I’ve seen in Texas, I’d say Giddy Up!

Families who dirt bike together are totally together By Alexandra Straub
With the distractions of technology, smartphones, television programming, life, video games and more, it can be tough to find an activity in which the whole family can participate let alone enjoy. Age differences between children, gender, and general interests can vary greatly. My brother and I couldn’t be more opposite. Rest assured, there is hope and some of it comes in the form of two wheels. Scott Ponuick, marketing and promotions manager at Popkum Motor Park, in Rosedale, raced snowmobiles and ATVs as a child. And he road raced for many years of his life. He also grew up around the racetrack as his father raced stock cars. You could say motor oil runs through his veins and that motor oil has since been passed to his family. He mentions: “Before we had kids, I bought Christine (his wife) a bike; a Honda XR 86,” since she showed interest in the sport. For all the time that Christine cheered on her husband, it was time for her to get in her own saddle. He fixed it up and it ran like new. She loved it. She explains: “It was fun watching him, but I’d rather be out there too!” Not too long after that, Christine became pregnant with their first child. “Before she (Taylor) was even born, we started talking about what bike we should get her and getting gear ready for her for when she was old enough,” Christine says. By the time Taylor was two years old she was on
two wheels. With training wheels, of course. Then again, you could argue that she was on two wheels much before then because the only way she’d fall asleep as a baby was when her dad would ride her around the back yard in a harness. “She always wanted to get on the bike,” Christine recounts. “Taylor always wanted daddy to take her around.” Now that Taylor is six and her little brother, Chase, is three, they both can ride their own bikes and have a blast doing it. At home, the kids are on Oset electric trials bikes. They don’t make any noise so they can play in the back yard until the batteries run out! There’s also a “throttle” modulator that makes sure the kids can’t get themselves into too much trouble. Scott and Christine consider themselves very lucky because everyone in the family loves to get out onto the trails, even if they aren’t moving very quickly! “It’s so cool to see Taylor and Chase progress,” says Scott. Even though Scott’s employment brings him to Popkum Motor Park weekly, he said that he’d still take the kids on dirt bikes regardless. “It’s such a great way to build motor skills, coordination, a love of the outdoors and you just create so many memories together.” He talks about the families who come out to the Park. Moms, dads, and kids alike take to the track. “There’s one family that comes to mind… I’ve watched the kids grow up over the last 12 years.
‘‘
You value time together more when you’re all doing something that you all love. As a full-time working mom, I’m so grateful we have riding as a common bond.
’’
Alexandra Straub
For example, the dad and daughter will show up, and then they’ll turn laps together. And then they pull over and chat about their laps and the things they can work on.” Christine comments: “You value time together more when you’re all doing something that you all love. As a full-time working mom, I’m so grateful we have riding as a common bond.” Some might be concerned about safety when it comes to speed and kids. But like any other sport, with the proper equipment, training and supervision, dirt biking is quite safe. And did I mention fun? “I couldn’t think of a better way to spend the day,” Christine remarks. For more information on getting your kids (or yourself!) on two wheels, visit www.popkummotorpark. com

A level 2 charger (with 30 amp service) cuts the maximum recharge time to under
SPECIAL
ROAD - READY

This is a just a concept at this point but with
Lamborghini Asterion
mounting pressure on car makers to reduce carbon output and the fact the Porsche brand (Another VW Group brand) already has the 918 hybrid, this looks like it could make it to market within the next few years.

Ok, now back to earth. With the trend towards all-wheeldrive (AWD) gaining more and more momentum it was only a matter of time before cars previously without AWD start to appear with this option. Take the popular VW Golf wagon, soon to be available in Europe with AWD and a slightly higher ground clearance. Called the Alltrack, this more rugged looking and capable VW will certainly appeal to buyers of the Subaru Outback or Audi Allroad. In North America, we don’t buy many wagons but we certainly love when manufacturers add a slightly higher ride-height, lower body cladding plus AWD and call them a crossover vehicle. Sales jump. Not available in Canada but after chatting with VW Canada executives, they have put in a request to Germany to get this car for our AWD-loving climate. Stay tuned.

Toyota i-Road

To complete the circle, the same Renegade approach is being used with this Fiat 500X, basically, taking the same continued on page 8

Paris
continued from page 6 Jeep-like elements and making them into a Fiat.
Volvo XC90
Pic of the Week Infiniti premiered its eye-catching Q80 Inspiration concept at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. The four-door fastback is five metres long, two metres wide, and only 1.35 metres at its highest point. Powered by a new 2.2-litre, four-cylin-
der turbo diesel engine, it delivers 170 horsepower. It also provides a glimpse into a high-performance and efficient hybrid electric powertrain that is expected to deliver 550hp while returning 5.5L/100km.. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
Both are turbocharged and supercharged
Fiat 500X
and are matched to an 8-speed automatic.
