Submitted When Danielle St. Jean of Cranbrook received a call from Bree Protasiewich, Manager of Cranbrook Mitsubishi advising her that she had just won $10,000 as part of an August promotion by the company she was overjoyed. The gas industry employs 1,700 people in the Fort Nelson area alone, and can be maintained only by reaching Asian markets.

The speech notes that Chinese LNG consumption rose by a fifth in the first half of 2014.

“This is a chance – not a windfall,” the speech notes, after one of the leading investment groups warned of shifting conditions that could delay its participation.

“What an incredible act of giving,” shares Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director.

“Danielle’s choice to support the psychiatry unit where she is a Unit Clerk is remarkable. It shows the compassion she has for those she works with and works on behalf of.”

EKFH will steward the $10,000 donation for the Psychiatry Unit Recreation Department.

Managers and staff have brought forward several ideas and a decision of where the funding will be allocated will be completed shortly. The most important thing is that all the ideas are patient focused and no matter which idea and plan is selected it will

have a great impact on the quality of service provided on the unit.

“We are good at negotiating in this government,” Clark said.

“We’ve got a good record. We’re going to keep negotiating hard.”

The government plans to table framework legislation this month to define the environmental standards and tax structure for the industry, which has more than a dozen international players considering LNG development.

NDP leader John Horgan said it’s been a year since the government first promised a tax structure for LNG, and now with a deadline looming at of the end of October, Clark is trying to back away from 2013 election promises to retire B.C.’s debt and slash taxes based on LNG revenue.

“I think we gave away our bargaining power when it comes to liquefied natural gas,” Horgan said. “Everyone in the sector knows that the premier is way out on a branch and made commitments that she cannot keep.”

The speech described the recent six-year labour agreement with B.C. teachers after a strike that stretched

from spring to the early weeks of the fall school term.

“British Columbia can look forward to five

years of labour peace,” the speech said. “This is unprecedented. We cannot let this opportunity pass.”

1. Opulence in Ancient Rome. People have been eating apples as far back as 6,500 BC. In ancient Greece and Rome, apples were considered a luxury fruit and sign of opulence. There is even Pomona, the Roman goddess of apples.

2. Apples of the Crimean. Apples are believed to originate in the region of modern day Kazakhstan, between the Crimean Sea and the Black Sea. There are over 8,000 varieties of apples worldwide, with more than 2,500 of them grown in North America. The only type of apple native to Canada? The crabapple.

3. Apples through the Ages. Many legends and traditions are tied to apples, from the fruit Eve used to tempt Adam with in paradise to Newton’s discovery of the law of gravity when watching a falling apple. Apples are the most widely consumed fruit with 65 apples eaten by an average person per year. China, the US and Turkey are the world’s top apple producers. Canada’s national apple is the McIntosh.

4. An Apple a Day… Keeps the doctor away.

An apple before bed will make the doctor beg his bread. We all know apples are good for you.

One of their main nutritional benefits is the large amount of fibre. Apples are also one of the best sources of the mineral boron, which may promote bone health. They are fat-, sodium- and cholesterol-free and a medium sized apple has about 80 calories.

5. Glorious Blooms. Like many other edible fruits, apples are members of the rose family.

This explains the tree’s fragrant apple blossoms in the spring, made up of masses of showy flowers with five equal petals arranged around a central cup bearing fruit-forming pistils.

6. Size Matters. Apples come in a large range of sizes from the tiniest crabapples, slightly larger than a cherry, to the largest varieties that are the size of a grapefruit. The largest apple ever recorded weighed in at three pounds and two ounces. A medium apple, a six ounce glass of pure apple juice or half a cup of applesauce are considered one serving.

7. A Tree for Every Yard. Wish you could have an apple orchard in your backyard? There are many varieties of apples that are hardy in our region and if space is a challenge, consider planting a hedge of dwarf trees or an apple espalier.

Apple trees will usually bear fruit after five years.

Most apples do not pollinate themselves or any flowers of the same variety; this means you need to plant at least two different apple tree varieties close to one another so that the bees can pollinate.

8. Like Raw Eggs. The best way of harvesting apples is the “rolling method”. the apple is gently turned upside down on the spur - the little part that connects the apple’s stem to the branch. If the apple is ready to pick, it usually comes off quite easily and without disturbing other fruit.

Make sure to place apples gently into a basket, or container; jostling or fruit hitting one another can cause bruising.

9. Smelly Apples. Late-season apples are usually best for storing. Apples ripen six to ten times faster at room temperature than if they are kept in the fridge or a cold room. Properly stored, apples can have a shelf life of 90 days or more.

Keeping them away from any strong-smelling foods prevents them from absorbing unpleasant odours.

10. A Flood of Apples. Juicing is a great way of processing apples, especially if you have a lot of them. It takes about 36 apples to make one gallon of apple cider. Freshly pressed apple juice will turn brown as it makes contact with the air.

To prevent this oxidation, you can add a few squeezes of lemon or lime juice.

Oil a slippery slope for cities B.C. Views

by Tom Fletcher Every year when B.C.’s municipal politicians get together to preach to the provincial cabinet, there comes a point in the maze of resolutions where things go sideways.

Last year it was a misinformed, impossible demand to ban all traces of genetic engineering. Before that they thumbed their mobile phones and denounced wireless power meters.

Both votes passed by narrow margins in a half-empty chamber, with many delegates focused on the serious community issues they are elected to address.

This year it was a charge led by Burnaby to denounce the proposed Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion.

And this time it was defeated.

Credit for this sudden attack of common sense goes largely to North Cowichan Coun.

Al Siebring. Here’s part of his address to the recent Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Whistler: “Ladies and gentlemen, we are elected to handle things like roads and water and sewer and land use, police, fire, garbage.

We’re not here to talk about social policy, child poverty or heaven forbid, pipelines.

“Those kinds of things dilute our credibility as an organization. We’re becoming a social policy activist group rather than a group of municipal politicians.

“Half of this resolutions book is stuff that’s outside of our purview…. If you want to do social policy, get your butt elected to the

provincial legislature.”

Burnaby, New Westminster, Victoria and Vancouver were undeterred. In tax-rich urban centres one can make a living at local politics. And grandstanding works.

Burnaby Coun. Nick Volkow rattled off a jumbled history of refineries in his region, noting that the sole surviving Chevron plant is bringing in crude by trucks and trains because the 60-yearold pipeline is oversubscribed. He didn’t explain how stopping a pipeline upgrade would keep it open, or improve oil safety.

Volkow repeated the protester myth that a new pipeline would introduce diluted bitumen to the coast. Trans Mountain started shipping dilbit in the late 1980s.

Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar and others from along the Interior pipeline route pointed out another flaw. If southern cities want to wander outside their mandate to make this gesture, why target only this pipeline and ignore rail lines and highways that cross the same rivers and streams?

Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan boasted that after his first court challenge to the National Energy Board was tossed out, his high-priced eco-lawyer found a constitutional angle. Cha-ching!

The comedy of all this was illustrated by Coun. Robin Cherbo from Nelson, who assured delegates he uses synthetic oil in his vehicle. Is that derived from organic sunflowers? And what significance does that gesture have compared with the gasoline and jet fuel that carried 1,200 delegates to Whistler?

Cherbo assumes that Ottawa can simply direct Alberta’s oil industry to start refining all the heavy oil there. Half a century into this industrial mega-project, this stuff should just be banned from pipelines. Peace, man.

This is why electiontime posturing by local politicians is a slippery slope. Not only do they lack authority, they and their staff lack the required expertise and information.

The Trans Mountain pipeline starts in Alberta and branches into the U.S. It is by definition federal jurisdiction. NEB hearings on its expansion continue, with expert input, especially on shipping risks, from the B.C. government, Green MLA Andrew Weaver and others.

Municipal politicians should pipe down and defend their own performance.

There are now three nominated candidates for Mayor, eight for Councillor and five for School Trustee.

Nomination papers will be accepted until

4 pm on October 10 by appointment with the chief election officer.

Forms are available at City Hall as well as on the City of Cranbrook website.

Advance voting takes place at the Seniors Centre on November 5, 6 & 12. Mail voting information is available from the Chief Election Officer.

General voting day for the Local Government Election is at Laurie School, Saturday, November 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Voters

will be asked to vote for one Mayor, up to six Councillors and up to five trustees. In addition the City will be seeking electoral assent on whether or not to continue adding fluoride to the City’s Water system.

The question will ask: “Are you in favour of Council adopting City of Cranbrook Cease Fluoridation Bylaw No. 3799, 2014, which authorizes stopping the addition of fluoride to the municipal water supply effective January 1, 2015?”

Elaine Truscott won the quilt, and raffle tickets sales from the community raised nearly $5,000 for the centre. “The proceeds went a long way to pay off the loan for the new floor in our centre,” said Schwab.

RCMP seek reckless driver Submitted Kiimberley RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance regarding an incident that could have put lives at risk.

On Saturday October 4th the Kimberley RCMP were made aware of a possible impaired driver on Houle Forest Service Rd. just outside Kimberley.

While en route to the call police observed the suspect vehicle, with three occupants, travelling on Hwy 95A toward Kimberley at Meadowbrook Motors where police attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver however failed to stop and accelerated toward Kimberley passing at least one other vehicle in the blind corner at Church Avenue.

Police opted not to pursue the suspect vehicle out of concern for the safety of the public as Octoberfest and First Saturday were known to be underway in the Platzl at the time.

The vehicle continued to speed off and proceeded to make a right turn from Ross Street onto Wallinger Avene toward the Platzl at high rate of speed, barely negotiating the corner.

Tire tracks located at the intersection indicate the vehicle travelled through the south bound left turning lane and into the through south bound lane before correcting and heading up to Townsite. Police conducted extensive patrols of Townsite but were unable to locate the vehicle.

The Kimberley RCMP are seeking

assistance from the public with identifying the driver of the grey 2006 GMC Sierra single cab pick up truck that would have been observed at approximately 4:37 p.m. on Saturday October 4th speeding through the intersection of Ross St and Wallinger Ave. The truck was located later at the owner’s residence, but he had been away and was unaware of what had taken place. The truck also sustained damage to the front bumper.

Anyone with information with respect to this incident is being asked to contact the Kimberley RCMP at 250-427-4811 or Crimestoppers.

The second day of school this season saw our first Wild Warriors meeting. The Warriors are our Aboriginal Student Leadership group. It was really well attended and students were great about accepting responsibility for different roles within the organization.

We welcomed our new grade ten students with a luncheon on Thursday October, 2. Hopefully our newest students will be starting to settle into their classes. Elders have been visiting the school also to help ensure students feel comfortable at MBSS. Up-coming events include a flag raising to honour Louis Riel Day scheduled for Friday, November 14, 2013 outside City Hall in Cranbrook, more on that event next time.

Jeff Nagel Transportation Minister Todd Stone is calling for public input to help guide a new 10-year provincial transportation plan he aims to unveil by the end of January.

The public consultations for the plan – dubbed “B.C. On the Move” – include meetings across the province with communities and stakeholders, a Twitter town hall and a dedicated website at engage. gov.bc.ca/transportationplan.

Stone said he expects local priorities coming forward may include calls for secondary road improvements, more highway passing lanes or four-lane sections, as well as enhancements to local transit or cycling routes.

The ministry is accepting submissions until Dec. 12.

Survey questions to the public released by the ministry emphasize highway improvements and ask nothing about coastal ferry service or fares – the main source of criticism for Stone in recent months. The ministry will instead rely on previous public consultations in 2011 by the B.C. Ferry Commissioner to guide the ferries portion of the new plan.

Nor does the document ask the public if they’re willing to pay more tolls to finance

new bridges in Metro Vancouver.

Stone previously promised a tolling policy review, in light of probable new tolls on replacements of the Pattullo Bridge and Massey Tunnel, and a call from Metro mayors for tolling reform to allow road pricing to fund TransLink.

Tolling inequity is already a major complaint among Surreyarea residents, who feel singled out by tolls on the province’s Port Mann Bridge and TransLink’s Golden Ears Bridge.

Stone said he remains committed to review the policy, which allows tolls only on new infrastructure where there’s a reasonable untolled alternative, but couldn’t give a timeline.

The replacement of the Massey Tunnel between Delta and Richmond with a new bridge is already in the technical design phase and is expected to be one of the plan’s centrepiece projects, along with the Cariboo Connector four-laning of 440 kilometres of Highway 97 from Cache Creek to Prince George.

It’s also expected to explore options for a future second crossing of Okanagan Lake in Kelowna.

Stone said a successful referendum on new taxes for TransLink in Metro Vancouver next spring would result

in the mayors’ transit expansion plans being added into the provincial plan.

A referendum defeat, he said, would leave “other investments” identified as priorities in the Lower Mainland to be pursued under the plan.

Stone said he’s working collaboratively with the mayors to help them adjust their financial assumptions and design the question so the referendum – to be held via mail-in ballot – has the “maximum chance of success.”

A discussion guide for the consultations notes the province needs to replace aging transportation infrastructure, while preparing for an extra million B.C. residents by 2025 as well as the effects of aging demographics, growing demand for public transit and increased pressure on rural roads from resource development.

As for how to pay for new infrastructure, the ministry document says the province would “explore different funding options” while also maximizing federal contributions and partnering with First Nations, local governments and the private sector.

NDP transportation critic Claire Trevena said the questions posed by the province are “exceedingly superficial” and fail to address B.C.’s biggest transportation problems.

spread from the current location. Left unmanaged, this solitary site could become an even larger problem downstream if it were to disperse and establish itself further down the Kootenay River.”

With volunteer help from the Jimsmith Lake Community Association, the Rocky Mountain Naturalists, and Springbrook Resort, EKIPC staff were able to remove existing patches of yellow flag iris which had spread down a small tributary of the Kootenay River. The site will need monitoring in future years to ensure the plant does not re-establish itself.

The East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council (EKIPC) hosted an event in Skookumchuck to remove an aquatic invasive plant – the yellow flag iris.

Although this large iris is beautiful when in flower, it threatens aquatic ecosystems and wetlands in North America, like those at the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA).

Once established in the right conditions, yellow flag iris can easily outcompete native vegetation, creating dense stands of iris-dominant vegetation. The yellow flag iris infestations in the Creston Valley wetlands along the Kootenay River require many hours of volunteer effort just to keep the plant in check.

Removal of the iris is mostly done by hand digging, arduous work because of the huge root systems the plant develops – and it loves to grow in water making digging conditions even more challenging.

Unfortunately, according to the Invasive Species Council of BC, this plant has quickly spread throughout the Okanagan valley, lower Similkameen Valley, Shuswap Lake, Christina Lake and other isolated sites in the West Kootenay. But here in the East Kootenay, the small infestation at Skookumchuck is the only known location of yellow flag iris in the region. EKIPC’s Program Manager, Todd Larsen, stated “it was important to eradicate this plant immediately to prevent further

Even though breast cancer primarily affects women, men can also receive this diagnosis.

A newly diagnosed person sometimes has to leave her job, either temporarily or perma­

nently, to undergo the appropriate treatment.

The family has to reor­ ganize and confront increased expenses and a reduction in income, especially if the par­ ent has to be sent away to be treated. Indeed, oncology centres are usually located in large urban areas.

It is quite understand­ able that parents feel totally distraught at the thought of having to leave their children and suffer through this ordeal all alone.

Fortunately, many types of support are available.

Nothing represents femininity in the public mind more than a wom­ an’s breasts. Breasts beautify and define a woman’s figure and nourish her newborn babies. Breasts, situ­ ated so close to the heart, embody comfort, love, and the place where sorrows are healed.

Breast cancer affects women in their most tender, secret places.

And it is from these depths that they must find the resources to drive out the intruder that has invaded their most intimate space.

A breast cancer diag­ nosis, given after a long and agonizing wait, has a devastat­ ing effect. However, treatment success rates for this type of cancer encourage women to take immediate action in order to quickly regain their health.

Wisely, most women can confide in their fam­ ily and friends, ask for help, and participate in support groups; this step is all about finding allies in their battle. These women can thus bet­ ter focus on their heal­ ing, knowing that their positive attitude is an advantage. However, that doesn’t mean that they should become disconnected from their emotions and ignore all the ups and downs they are bound to feel.

To cross these tumul­ tuous waters and stay the course, each woman must find her own path and invent oases of peace where she can recharge her batteries.

Massages, relaxation, a makeover, solitary walks, and outings with friends are therapeutic.

The recovering woman must dare to give in to her impulsiveness! The intruder will quickly understand that she is very much alive and still master of her des­ tiny.

Things have changed since the days when people had to whisper the “C” word and keep the topic of women’s “problems” for hushed private ex changes.

October ’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month says it loud and clear — today, wom­ en’s health issues are front and central, and breast cancer is defi­ nitely worth talking about.

The Canadian Cancer Society says that one in

nine women is likely to develop breast can­ cer, while one in thirty cases is fatal. What these statistics really tell us is that breast cancer screening, mammography, and a healthy lifestyle are essential components of living life to the full­ est.

What’s new in breast cancer prevention?

A new study presented at the 2014 European Breast Cancer Con­ ference confirmed something most of us

know through sheer common sense — get­ ting regular exercise redu ces a wo man’s chances of being diag­ nosed with breast can­ cer or recurring breast cancer.

Compared to women who got no regular exercise, women who were physically active for more than one hour a day had a 12­per­ cent lower risk of deve­ loping breast cancer.

The good news is that this was found to be the case for women of any age and weight. And

Healthy habits and a good life philosophy are far better than obsessive fear. Besides, for many of us, cancer turns out to be an isolated case, a temporary setback.

After their long jour­ neys through the desert, thousands of women are able to take a new look at life and transform their core values and their relationships with

It gets tiresome to have to be friendly and nice to people that feel the need to send nasty emails or phone calls when we are adults dealing with issues. Quite possibly the person you are talking to doesn’t have anything to do with your issue and why should that person have to deal with your drama?

Opposition is still strong in regards to recent farmland proposals

By Tom Fletcher The B.C. government’s proposals to expand food processing, retail and alcohol sales on farmland got a rough ride during a summer consultation tour with farmers, local governments and individuals invited to comment.

The agriculture ministry released a summary of submissions this week, after closed-door meetings in August with community, farming, ranching and agricultural industry representatives. The meetings

were set up to develop regulations after the province passed legislation this spring, dividing the Agricultural Land Reserve into two zones with the intent of easing restrictions on farm-related and nonfarm revenue activities.

A proposal to revise regulations restricting food storage, processing and retail sales, requiring half of products to be produced on the farm, was rejected by “a considerable majority of stakeholders from all regions,” the summary states.

With wineries and cideries already allowed on farmland, a proposal to extend the regulation to include breweries, distilleries and meaderies was sup-

ported by a majority in all regions, particularly from local governments in Zone 1, the Lower Mainland, Okanagan and Vancouver Island.

Wineries and cideries are allowed without approval from the Agricultural Land Commission, as long as half of the materials are produced on the farm. Some questioned whether that rule would work for breweries and distilleries, with hops, malting barley and distilling grain not produced in large quantities in B.C. The government’s suggestion to allow larger tasting areas for wine, cider and potentially beer and distilled liquor was also rejected by “a considerable

Sean Arthur Joyce will be speaking about his new book, Laying the Children’s Ghosts to Rest, in Cranbrook and Kimberley.

The practice persisted well into the 20th century, aided by dozens of immigration agencies, many of questionable repute. Though some of the children did well, many were exploited and abused, their new lives hardly an improvement on the ones they left behind. A few Canadian families adopted the children, but most were wanted strictly for their labour.

Joyce’s book explores the lesser-known part of the story—what happened to some of these children in Western Canada. The author also explores the impact of this experience on subsequent generations of Canadians.

Laying the Children’s Ghosts to Rest chronicles this essential yet seldom-discussed aspect of Canadian history.

Joyce’s book combines exhaustive research with memoir and creative nonfiction to paint a vivid picture of life for a Canadian Home Child.

Cole Harris, Professor Emeritus of Historical Geography, UBC, calls Laying the Children’s Ghosts to Rest “A significant achievement in Canadian history.”

What is the biggest ‘open secret’ in Canadian history? Hint: Canada’s most beloved literary icon, Anne of Green Gables, is based on this historical phenomenon.

Answer: Between 1869 and 1948, 100,000 children from poor neighbourhoods in Britain were emigrated without parental support (or consent in some cases) to work as indentured servants in Canada. A further 30,000-plus were emigrated to other British colonies—mainly Australia and New Zealand. So why do we hear so little of our Canadian child immigrants?

Seven years ago, while researching his family tree, BC writer Sean Arthur Joyce made a curious discovery: immigration records showed his paternal grandfather came to Canada with three other boys and a chaperone, but no parents. After consulting a local genealogist he was introduced to the term Home Children. Although it didn’t mean anything to him at the time, his journalistic curiosity was sparked and he decided to investigate.

“The wider story interested me because I realized if this happened in my family, it must have happened in many other Canadian families,” he says. Indeed, an estimated four million people can trace their roots to Home Children— approximately one in eight Canadians.

College instructor releases her fourth novel, Between, at book store Submitted

COTR instructor Angie Abdou has launched her fourth book, Between.

College of the Rockies’ English and Creative Writing instructor, Angie Abdou, is celebrating the release of her fourth novel – Between.

Abdou launched the book at Lotus Books on October 8.

Following on the heels of Abdou’s collection of short stories Anything Boys Can Do and novels The Bone Cage (2011 Canada Reads finalist) and The Canterbury Trail, Between is described as a novel about the complexities of class, gender, parenthood, and desire. So far, reviews of the novel have been very positive throughout the country including from The Globe and Mail, The Vancouver Sun and the national book industry magazine The Quill and Quire.

“Between is my most ambitious novel so far,

and I believe it’s my best. It’s, therefore, a relief to see other people thinking so too! I’m thrilled with the attention and enthusiastic response it is getting,” Abdou says.

Abdou, who is balancing her instructing responsibilities at the College with a promotional book tour, has held events in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario. She has also enjoyed a week as guest editor at National Post Books. During her Cranbrook visit to Lotus books, Abdou will be presenting a reading from Between and is excited to bring the celebration home to the East Kootenay. A well-respected instructor, she finds she receives as much from her students as she gives to them.

“The more I teach creative writing, the more I learn about creative writing. My

work as an instructor at the College of the Rockies feeds directly into creative work. I’m excited to have this launch at Lotus Books where I can celebrate my new book with colleagues, co-workers and students from the College,” she explains.

“In recent years, I’ve had some very enthusiastic, hard-working, and talented students in my second-year creative writing classes at the College. I look forward to the day I’m celebrating the launch of those novels at Lotus Books,” she adds.

the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) for funding to undertake one of many actions recommended in the plan available at www.fwcp.ca. The FWCP hopes to get funding proposals that align with the plan by the November 14, 2014 deadline.

“Area residents have been calling for a program to improve fish and wildlife management in this important watershed,” says Kootenay East MLA, Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines.

“We now have a comprehensive plan that reflects input from our local people, and we have the funding to deliver the goods.”

In spring 2013, FWCP and Columbia Basin Trust (the Trust) partnered to develop the UKEEP. The Trust provided $3 million to develop the plan and fund local fish and wildlife projects over the next three to five years. The FWCP, which already coordinates and supports fish and wildlife projects in the region, will implement the new plan.

“Our partnership with FWCP, along with ideas from the many involved and committed residents, really demon-

strates what we can do when we work together,” says Neil Muth, Columbia Basin Trust President and CEO. “We are really proud to be part of this plan that is strengthening environmental well-being and addressing important ecological issues identified by Basin residents.”

“The plan recommends a mix of onthe-ground actions as well as actions aimed at improving the science and our understanding, which will lead to more hands-on projects in the future,” says East Kootenay resident and FWCP Board member, Dave White. “This plan will help all of us work to conserve and enhance the ecosystems and species that make this region so special.”

This new funding opportunity is in addition to the existing funding opportunities through the FWCP. The FWCP is currently delivering or supporting the delivery of dozens of fish and wildlife projects across the Columbia River Basin that address large and small lakes, streams, wetland and riparian areas, uplands and dryland, and species of interest. Just imagine sitting in a beautiful garden surrounded by flowers and gorgeous scenery with the scents of freshly baked scones and teas brewing filling your senses. You may think it is imagination when in fact this is exactly what takes place annually in the garden of Debbie Graham as she and her team of tea fanciers welcomes you to the Pink Garden Tea. The Pink Garden Tea took place earlier this summer (July 19) and proceeds from the event earmarked to support women in the valley.

The grounds are exceptional and the hospitality even more so. Those in attendance came with anticipation of enjoying teas of all kinds while knowing they are making a difference in the lives of other women.

The tea also featured the sale of items including tea cup painting prints and gift cards by the talented Laura Leeder and scarves, blankets and afghans lovingly made by Linda Panchyshyn.

As the final drop of tea was poured and the unity of women celebrated, the Pink Garden Tea was able to generously donate $500 to East Kootenay Foundation for Health for the Creston Hospital.

The hood and side windows have dropped in profile for better visibility, while the size, colours and quality of the computer generated gauges and controls simplifies operation while driving. I towed with the new truck and its manners are good if not improved. In part, this is assisted by the long list of towing features like trailer sway control; tow/haul mode; Dynamic Hitch Assist, SelectShift transmission and better tow mirrors.

differential locker has been added. This truck churns mud better than ever.

Verdict Payload is up (to 900 kgs) and so is towing (approx. 5.5 tonnes) yet overall body weight is down by 317 kgs.

Ford offers four engines and even the smallest 2.7L EcoBoost will still tow up to 3.8 tonnes. The cab is quieter, yet larger. The floor is flat yet has more storage compartments. The dash is less cluttered yet offers more information.

Do you sense a theme here? Consider that the design phase of this truck took four years and the testing was the most intense ever. The result? A list of improvements a hockey rink long – that’s a fact. Now, how will they all work together? Well Ford’s claims will have to play out on roads, across Canada, in the coming years. But from what I’ve seen in Texas, I’d say Giddy Up!

City of light shines brightly on dream machines

Paris, France – The Paris Auto Show is one of those must-visit events for those of us charged with reporting on the latest and greatest new vehicles.

So many manufacturers now develop products for a world market so these early European shows often offer a glimpse of what’s coming next

to our shores.

Here are five machines that caught my eye.

Lamborghini Asterion

Let’s start with a dream machine. The Lamborghini Asterion concept car was certainly a showstopper. Sidestepping the current design approach of angular shapes with hard edges, this new Lambo has a more curvaceous look that almost mimics a front engine car.

The Lamborghini Asterion What is wedged in the middle of this exotic is a hybrid system that marries a naturally aspirated 5.2L V10 engine with three electric motors (Two in the front producing all wheel drive and another in the transmission for full electric drive capability), producing a whopping 910hp with acceleration that will see this

car run to 100km in just three seconds. The Asterion is capable of running on just electric power for roughly 30km and, providing silent driving in a wickedly sexy machine. This is a just a concept at this point but with mounting pressure on car makers to reduce carbon output and the fact the Porsche brand (Another VW

Group brand) already has the 918 hybrid, this looks like it could make it to market within the next few years.

Ok, now back to earth. With the trend towards all-wheeldrive (AWD) gaining more and more momentum it was only a matter of time before cars previously without AWD start to

Allroad. In North America, we don’t buy many wagons but we certainly love when manufacturers add a slightly higher ride-height, lower body cladding plus AWD and call them a crossover vehicle. Sales jump. Not available in Canada but after chatting with VW Canada executives, they have put in a request to Germany to get this car for our AWD-loving climate. Stay tuned.

Toyota i-Road

Imagine a pure electric, three-wheel, scooter-like vehicle, with a fixed roof, steering wheel and can drive up to 45km/h with 50km of electric range. The Toyota i-Road attracted big crowds when it was demonstrated at this year’s Paris Show. The small wheel at the rear of the i-Road pivots at low speed for amazing maneuverability, plus when driven at higher speeds the entire vehicle tilts over like a motorcycle with the front wheels rotating independently of each other. It looks odd and must feel odd to drive but the upside is covered driving, without a helmet, and emissions free transportation.

The i-Road is being tested in Japan and will be used in the

French city of Grenoble as part of a vehicle-sharing program.

This type of vehicle already exists in Europe but the tilting and pivoting elements make it unique. This would not be popular on our wider roads in North America but the i-Road will fit right in on Europe’s busy streets.

Fiat 500X

The Chrysler Groups’ parent company Fiat is at it again, taking the best that its European brands have to offer and marrying them with American brands. The Fiat 500L has had a mild reception here in North America so now they have taken the same platform and produced the Jeep Renegade.

To complete the circle, the same Renegade approach is being used with this Fiat 500X, basically, taking the same Jeep-like elements and making them into a Fiat. The 500X will be available with front wheel drive (FWD) or AWD and a variety of engine and transmission options in Europe. The engine choices have not been divulged for our market but expect to see the 170hp 1.4 turbo 4-cylinder and the 184hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engines here. The Fiat 500L has not been a hit for Fiat but, yet

Volvo XC90

Will the introduction of an all-new, full-size XC90 SUV be enough to save Volvo here in North America? Time will tell but the crowds at the Volvo stand in Paris were packed with people combing over

every pert of this attractive SUV. It has been over ten years since Volvo introduced the original XC90 and the years have not been good to this vehicle or the brand. Sales for the XC90 and Volvo in general have been pathetic in North America. This new XC90 has a lot going for it and Volvo

hopes it will help revive the brand. The XC90 will be sold in Canada with AWD in the T6 or T8 engine variants. Both are turbocharged and supercharged and are matched to an 8-speed automatic. The T6 has 320hp and the T8 comes with an additional 80hp electric motor for improved power

and efficiency. The three-row design remains intact but the interior is larger for more space. The dash is a standout with a vertical iPad-like application in the centre for classleading connectivity and usability. The price of the T6 will start at $60,700 and the T8 will start at $73,400.

available. That’s relevant, as the Soul EV’s officially rated driving range is 149 km.

In addition to being quiet and fuel-free, Soul EV effectively matches the practical user features of its gasoline counterpart. It can seat 4 to 5 passengers and has the same large rear cargo area. Kia’s polymer (electrolyte) lithium ion battery pack is compact and easier to hide than others, as is can be molded into different shapes. In Soul EV it’s centrally fitted under the seats and a raised rear floor pan.

The gasoline engine is replaced by a 109 horsepower liquid-cooled AC synchronous permanent magnet electric motor that can generate a whopping 210 lb-ft of torque. see Kia page B5

That’s 59 lb-ft more than the 2.0-litre gasoline engine version of Soul. Standing starts were not as jumpy as other electric vehicles tend to be and the overall performance of the electric drivetrain was impressively smooth.

Charger ports for the battery pack are hidden behind a hinged cover in the front grille.

The smaller port accepts either

a 120 volt (level 1) or a 240 volt (level2) charge connector.

A portable level 1 unit is stored in the vehicle and Kia Canada will also provide Soul EV buyers with a level 2 charge unit (made by Bosch) for home installation, free of charge.

The charger unit can also be used to pre-heat or pre-cool the Soul EV, while plugged into the grid. You can also program it to start or complete charging at a certain time. The level

1 charger plugs into any electrical outlet, but can take up to 24-hours to fully recharge the battery pack. A level 2 charger (with 30 amp service) cuts the maximum recharge time to under 5-hours. And a level 3 fast charge station can pump-in an 80 per cent charge in less than 30 minutes.

We didn’t take it out on the freeway, but the Soul EV seemed very stable (it’s heavier then the gas engine Soul)

and Kia claims a top speed of 145 km/hour. Kia also claims that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hour faster (by 4

seconds) than a Nissan Leaf.

It’s agile and peppy, with lots of initial get up and go, but it’s also no dragster.

Soul EV does qualify for an $8,000 federal government rebate and that certainly helps make the purchase price more palatable.

OBITUARY It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Georgina Pauline Benton (Kubos) April 29th 1967-October 1st 2014 After a courageous battle with cancer, Georgina passed away peacefully at 47 years of age.

Family and Friends will always remember her undeniable strength, wit, feisty nature, generosity of spirit, love of people, laugh, zest for life and unconditional love for her family and friends.

Left to treasure her memory is her husband Jack, son Brady, daughter Madison, grandson Nixon, and stepson Tim. Her mother Nina Kubos, sister Colleen and her husband Alain Meunier and children, and mother in law Shirlee (Granny) Benton; as well as numerous extended family and treasured friends who Georgi considered to be family.

Georgina was predeceased by her Father George Kubos, paternal grandparents Louis and Mary Kubos, maternal grandparents Paul and Marie Bezak as well as a number of aunts and uncles.

She was an extremely proud and protective mother, lover of animals, huge outdoor enthusiast with a passion for snowmobiling, quading, boating, and fishing. Born and Raised a Fernie girl; Georgina graduated from Fernie Secondary and furthered her education at SAIT University in Calgary, earning her dental assistant diploma.

After graduating from SAIT, Georgina met the love of her life Jack Benton. They married in October 1991 and settled in Fernie where Brady and Madison were born. In 1996 they made the decision to move their family to Castlegar, Jack’s hometown, and there they started their own trucking company. As tough as it was for Georgina to leave Fernie and her friends, she quickly adapted to her new life in Castlegar and it was not long before she made new lifelong friends who she always referred to as family.

To say Georgina was the hostess with the mostest would be an understatement that we can all attest to. She loved hosting parties and always put on the biggest and best spread. At the end of the night her friends left with a bellyache from a combination of overeating and laughing. There never was a party where Georgi wasn’t the last person to call it a night. Georgi loved being part of many functions and seldom passed up a good challenge. One year in particular the Pass Creek Fair put on a scarecrow competition for the most original and unique scarecrow. At the very last minute Georgina decided to enter this competition and won first place. Georgina was very proud of her title as the undisputed champion of the Pass Creek Fair Scarecrow Competition and wore her ribbon proudly.

Georgina’s pride in life was her Husband, her children and her four legged family members. She had a heart of gold that was large enough to disperse love to the entire world, but mess with her Family; her children in particular and she instantly turned into Momma Grizzly that nobody ever wanted to reckon with.

Although Georgi left us too soon, all of our lives have been touched and enriched by her presence. Her passion and determination for life as a whole, was second to none and everyone who knew her was in awe of her strengths and overall outlook on life.

Not a day went by that she did not radiate love and compassion to her family and all those around her. Her caring and loving spirit will remain with us the rest of our lives and for that we are forever grateful. No matter what the situation was, or where in the world her husband and babies were, Georgi never failed to remind them every single day how much she loved them with her infamous phrase – “did I tell you I love you today?”

Comprehensive Housing Strategy Development The Akisqnuk First Nation, one of four Ktunaxa Bands, located in Windermere, BC is currently seeking strategic direction in regard to housing from both a social and economic aspect.

We seek proposals from qualified proponents to: • Become familiarized with current AFN housing programs, processes, issues and challenges; • Become familiarized with regional housing needs and potential opportunities; Review existing housing policy and processes, make recommendation for revisions; • Research and develop a comprehensive housing strategy that will provide innovative solutions to housing issues and challenges both on and off reserve.
