Lacombe shows overwhelming support for Leah Cobetto Several community fundraisers held for young woman involved in collision

L

acombe looks after its own.

Whenever disaster strikes in Lacombe, the community quickly pulls together to support those in need.

Leah Cobetto’s case is no exception.

While walking through downtown Lacombe on her way home the night of Sept.

23rd, Cobetto, 22, was struck by an allegedly drunk driver. She was subsequently airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to Edmonton for treatment. Because of injuries sustained from the collision, Cobetto’s right leg was amputated below the knee.

Shortly after the incident, a facebook group was set up to support Cobetto and her family. It didn’t take long for the group to see widespread support throughout Central Alberta.

“The group went from 130 people to over 700 in three days,” said Darlene Boyko. “It just got out of control.”

Boyko has been one of the central organizers to the fundraising movements supporting Cobetto.

Interestingly, Boyko has never met Cobetto, but learned of what had happened through her friend Emily Rennie, who is neighbours with Cobetto’s parents.

“I couldn’t imagine, you’re just walking home from work and this happens to you,” said Boyko. “I just couldn’t imagine what she was going through.”

Shocked by the unfairness of the incident, Boyko and Rennie decided to do something about it.

“It struck a cord with me,” said Boyko.

She added that anyone who is irresponsible while driving, impaired or otherwise, is not stopping to think of how their decisions could impact someone else’s life. “(Leah is) such a sweet girl,” said Rennie. “She is always doing nice things for people. It’s just sad.”

After hearing about what had happened, Boyko and Rennie, along with Michelle Houston, another friend of Rennie’s, brainstormed some ideas of how they could help. They started by asking some friends of theirs with home businesses to donate some items for an online auction.

Boyko and Rennie had hoped to make maybe $1,000 through their online auction, but got more than they had hoped for. So far, two online fundraising auctions have been held and Boyko said she and the rest of the impromptu fundraising coordinators have received enough item donations to hold three more auctions.

“The community support has been phenomenal,” said Boyko. “The companies that have stepped up and donated blew us out of the water. We never expected it.

Never, never.”

Rennie agreed, saying that she, Boyko and Houston were incredibly grateful to all the businesses and everyone else who donated to and supported the fundraisers.

She also credited social media with the wide and rapid spread of support for the fundraising efforts.

“All I have to say is social media is powerful,” said Rennie. “There is no other way to explain it.”

Rennie and Boyko said that local media soon got hold of them, which led to further support for the motion.

“It just kind of snowballed from there,” said Rennie. “Donations have been pouring in. My house is full.”

“There were times that us girls ran all day collecting stuff or people were dropping things off at all three homes,” added Boyko. “Emily has been just phenomenal in putting those auctions together.”

Another plan that Boyko, Rennie and Houston came up with was to have a fundraising barbeque, which happened this past weekend.

Boyko said the barbeque was another idea that quickly grew larger than she had expected.

Originally, Boyko had just planned to sell burgers with Rennie and Houston.

When she contacted the Lacombe Fire Department to ask if she could borrow the department’s ‘Smoker 1’ mobile barbeque unit for the event, the department instead said they would volunteer to cook burgers and support the event as well.

It was a good thing, too. Boyko said the community’s response to the fundraising barbeque would have been more than she and her friends could have handled alone otherwise.

“We could not have done it without the fire department, there is no way.”

Other businesses, organizations and individuals stepped up to donate, volunteer or otherwise support as well, said Boyko.

On Oct. 5th Boyko and her friends held the fundraising barbeque and a silent auction for Cobetto.

After selling 700 pieces at the barbeque, volunteers had to run out and get more to keep feeding the hundreds of supporters that showed up for the event. Boyko said that she guessed the barbeque fed upwards of 800 people.

Houston said the response to the event was overwhelming.

“I honestly have to say that I am shocked,” said Houston. “There are really no words to describe how today went.

There are no words to describe how amazing our community is and how everybody has pulled together and come to support a girl that half of them have probably never even met before.”

“It’s so amazing,” added Rennie. “It’s been a beautiful experience for me to see.

I think with this whole thing its shown me that when you focus on something positive and everyone pulls together you can do amazing things and no one can stop you.”

Rennie said she went to visit Cobetto and her family the Sunday after the collision and told them of the fundraising plans.

Even then, the family was extremely grateful and taken aback by the community’s response.

“I told them that we were going to start (fundraising) and they were kind of shocked and didn’t know what to say but I don’t think any of us knew what to expect.”

Boyko said she is looking forward to meeting Cobetto and is planning to do so next week if Cobetto is feeling up to having visitors. Boyko added she and Cobetto have communicated a little bit solely through text messages and Cobetto’s gratitude is apparent even in those few conversations. news@lacombeexpress.com

Canadian University College looks for less confusing name

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express A part of Lacombe that has changed its name throughout the ages is looking to do so again.

Canadian University College (CUC) has operated under six different names since its inception in 1907.

Now, the institution is looking to change its name once again and clear up some confusion by dropping the word ‘college.’

CUC President Mark Haynal said the title University College does not have a consistent definition within Canada and can be confusing to some students from outside of Alberta, not to mention other countries.

“It’s to benefit our students,” said Haynal. “That university college name sometimes causes people who are thinking about coming here to pause.”

Haynal added troubles related to confusion about the institution’s name don’t end once students are enrolled either.

He said when students leave to go to graduate schools or are looking for employment, the confus-

ing name can cause other issues.

“People look at their resume and say, ‘So you graduated from Canadian University College, what is a university college?’ So they have to explain that,” said Haynal.

Here in Alberta, a university college is one of six different types of post secondary institutions funded by the Alberta government, said Haynal.

He added university colleges are faith-based post secondary institutions that are publicly funded and grant bachelors degrees that have the same approval process as they would anywhere else, such as the University of Alberta or University of Calgary.

A number of focus groups have been set up to help come up with possible names for the school, said Haynal.

He added CUC wanted to make sure everyone connected to the school had some opportunity for input into the decision.

“We wanted to make sure that all of our various constituencies and supporters felt like they had the oppor-

tunity to participate in this historic event of changing our name.”

Haynal said CUC has already met with a number of focus groups to gather ideas for possible names and is planning to meet with two more before finalizing its list of possible names.

Once the groups are complete, research will be done to make sure there are no issues, like legal or linguistic concerns with the names and CUC will then form a cabinet who will present one name to the board for a vote.

Should that vote go through, Haynal said CUC will be ready to reveal its new name. Otherwise, the process will begin again.

To facilitate these focus groups, CUC contracted with architect Brenda Beck who has worked on hundreds of projects with universities across Canada, said Haynal.

He went on to say that Beck also has a great deal of experience facilitating such group discussions.

friends, the board of trustees and the citizens of Lacombe.

The last two focus groups will be held in the Greater Toronto Area, a region where a large number of CUC students are from.

One will be with the governing board of all Seventh-day Adventist institutions in Canada and the other will be with a group of alumni.

Haynal said the turnout for the Lacombe citizen focus group was less than hoped for with only seven or so members of the public attending, but the conver-

sation was still worthwhile.

“It was a good discussion and I’m glad that some citizens did participate,” said Haynal. “We want any good ideas we can come up with.

Who knows who will have that good idea we are looking for.”

It was important for the citizens of Lacombe to have some input into the CUC name change as CUC is, “Anxious to contribute to the City of Lacombe being known as a university town.”

Haynal went on to say that having a university in Lacombe adds a lot to the

experience of living here and so CUC wants to sustain that relationship.

“Having a university present adds to the cultural life of the (community) and the academic opportunities of the (community).”

Haynal said CUC is planning to present a name to the board mid-November.

He added CUC has some major events coming up next summer and wants to ensure that any new signage, logos and other necessary changes related to the name change are complete by then. news@lacombeexpress.com

City seeks public input into MDP

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express City administration is reaching out to the public for input on a document that will shape Lacombe over the next 20 years.

On Oct. 7th, City of Lacombe administration held an open house at the Lacombe Memorial Centre seeking input into the Lacombe Municipal Development Plan (MDP), Growing Lacombe.

During the open house, citizens heard a brief presentation on what the MDP was actually about and what kind of feedback was being sought. Members of the public were then invited to share their opinions on whether or not the City’s goals were worth reaching, if they felt anything was missing from the draft MDP and suggest ways that goals might be achieved.

Manager of Planning and Development Lyla Peter said that last year, the City began an awareness and public consultation campaign designed to get people thinking about the MDP. Now, the City is looking for specifics to incorporate into the MDP. “We’re going to take the input that we get and we’re going to try and fashion some policies for the public to review at a future date and see if we’ve taken their input and come up with something that is correct, that meets what they’ve asked for,” said Peter. “From there we will hopefully put it into our MDP and get it ad-

opted and from there that shapes how the community grows.”

Peter added she was impressed with the turnout for the event. She said it is often hard to get people engaged with something like the MDP so it is encouraging to see people participating. At least 30 people showed up to participate in the open house, not all of them from Lacombe.

Gerrit and Christina Eggink live in the Rosedale Valley Enclave and would like to see it annexed by the City.

They came to the open house mostly for information about the direction the City was headed but also shared their thoughts on how the City could improve. “We know a few people are against (annexation),” said Gerrit. “We just want to know what the next steps (for the City) are.”

Several different displays and posters were set up for the open house, each dealing with different aspects of the MDP and separated into different stations.

Those in attendance were encouraged to attend as many stations as possible to share their thoughts.

Mayor Steve Christie said the discussion taking place was a positive sign. He said that it showed both the City and those who live in it have similar visions for the future of Lacombe. “What I’m learning is that community-wide we are unified with the direction we want to see Lacombe go.” news@lacombeexpress.com

Knights of Columbus set for Oktoberfest fundraiser

Next weekend, the Lacombe Knights of Columbus will host their annual Oktoberfest event fundraiser at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

Knights of Columbus (K of C) member Jim Maloney said the event is the organization’s key fundraiser for the year and a fun evening of entertainment for the community.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Maloney. “It’s a community event that supports our community, so it’s a worthy cause.”

Maloney said K of C supports a wide variety of community projects.

In the past, the organization has donated to the Lacombe Skateboard Park, the Lacombe Athletic Park, the Red Deer Women’s Shelter and many others.

Maloney said they decide which projects to support based on feedback from the community and what the Knights themselves feel are worthwhile causes.

“We just feel they are worthy projects.”

Not only does Lacombe K of C support local and regional projects, the group also sponsors annual scholarships.

Maloney said the Lacombe Composite High School AAA Scholarship is funded by the Knights.

Each year, the Knights give $1,000 to a deserving student who has, “Achieved against adversity.” Maloney said this is where the scholarship gets its name from.

This adversity can take many forms, said Maloney.

“We like to reward students like that.”

Maloney added academic achievement is not the only consideration given for the scholarship either.

“It has to be someone who has achieved in a lot of ways,” said Maloney. He added the Knights look for individuals who are active socially and do things like volunteering in the community as well as work hard in school.

Many of the causes that the Knights support are quite closely connected with youth in the community.

“You want to help out as much as you can,” said Maloney.

Instead, the Knights will see how much funding they receive from the event and then make a decision. He added the Knights often split up the money and donate to a number of different causes.

For the last eight or so years, the Knights of Columbus has been holding an Oktoberfest event as their main fundraiser for the year.

He said that they have seen consistent turnouts and a little growth over the years.

Maloney said the Knights used to do a number of other fundraisers, like collecting, cutting and delivering firewood.

He said that the Knights started looking at other ideas as the amount of money brought in wasn’t really worth the considerable effort.

While Oktoberfest takes months of organizing, Maloney said that there is less labour involved which is easier on the members and there is more money brought in.

In past years, the Knights have partnered with other

service clubs in the community to run the Oktoberfest event.

This year, the Lions are helping out.

For the first few years, the Lacombe Oktoberfest celebration barely had 300 people attending.

Maloney said that now, it is quite usual to see over 400.

He said that the catered meal for the Oktoberfest event will be Germanthemed as is appropriate for the occasion.

The meal will feature such tasty selections including bratwurst and other iconic German cuisine.

After the supper, the world-renowned music group The Emeralds will once again be playing for the dance.

The Lacombe Knights of Columbus Oktoberfest celebration will take place on Oct. 18th. Doors open at 6 p.m. with meal at 7 p.m.

Inner Peace Movement lecturer coming to Lacombe

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express On Oct. 14th, lecturer and the program director for Inner Peace Movement Canada Donna Fuechtman will be coming to Lacombe to deliver a lecture on what the Inner Peace Movement calls, “the spiritual facts of people’s lives.”

A lot of people lack understanding on the big questions like who and what we really are or why we are really here and Fuechtman said the Inner Peace Movement, through this lecture, tries to reveal some of the bigger picture to people and help them answer those questions.

“When people have the bigger picture of that, they get a better understand of themselves,” she said.

“It kind of connects all the missing pieces of the puzzle. If they are ever wondering anything, it puts that together for them.”

Fuechtman became involved with the Inner Peace Movement at a time when her life was quite stable.

She said she had a good job, a good family and nothing catastrophic had happened to her. However, she said that she still felt like something was missing.

“I knew that there had to be something more to life,” said Fuechtman. “I guess I was really searching, searching for that ‘something more’.”

Her search led her to hear a lecture given by the Inner Peace Movement (the same lecture that Fuechtman herself will be delivering next week).

She said, “Everything fell into place” for her afterwards and she began living a

much more fulfilling life.

“It clarified and it validated a lot of things for me that I already kind of had a sense of knowing,” she said.

“But when somebody else says it and you hear it, it really pulls it all together.”

She said that the Inner Peace Movement believes humans exist in two worlds at one time, the physical world and the spiritual world.

This lecture touches on a number of things in an effort to bring those two worlds together for people.

One of the things the lecture will discuss is the seven-year cycles of life.

Fuechtman said that this means that about every seven years, a person’s state of consciousness changes. People transfer from being young children, to teenagers, to young adults beginning their own lives and so on.

She said that the 0-7 cycle is particularly important because it is when a person picks up on the belief systems and attitudes of their parents and the environment that they are raised in, which they will carry throughout the rest of their lives.

The other particularly important cycle is the 49-56 cycle, where people begin to look for the greater meaning to life, she explained.

She said this is the cycle she was in when she got involved with the Inner Peace Movement.

“During that cycle, people are kind of looking for the missing pieces of the puzzle, they are looking for more meaning to life.

“They are able to overcome the habit of wanting to please everyone else.

“So they start looking to take care of themselves or making themselves their own first priority, not doing what everyone else thinks they should.”

Another interesting belief of the Inner Peace Movement that the lecture touches on is communication with so-called guardian angels that exist to guide a person.

Fuechtman said that that these are ‘advanced souls’ that go by many names and do not exist in the physical world. In a way, they are like a person’s individual GPS, she said.

City retail survey summary report is available The City of Lacombe has released a report outlining the results of the retail survey that ran from June through August.

The purpose of the survey was to better understand Lacombe’s retail trade area, which refers to the geographic area from which a community generates the majority of its customers.

This area can also be referred to as the market area or customer catchment area.

“We were extremely pleased that over 1,000 responses to the survey were received, with approximately 22 per cent of responses coming from people who live outside of Lacombe,” said Planning and Development Manager Lyla Peter.

“We hope to release the raw data (open source data) to allow others to review the findings. However, this requires the City to review the data to ensure no personal information is in the data prior to release.”

Key findings include: - 61% of those surveyed were between the ages of 31 and 55.

- 78 % of respondents live in Lacombe.

- 64% of people surveyed spend over $500 per month on retail purchases/groceries.

- 17 % spend over $500 per month in Lacombe on retail purchases/groceries.

- respondents between the ages of 31 – 39 have the highest average monthly spending on retail/groceries.

- 95.4% of all respondents purchase

clothing and clothing accessories primarily outside of Lacombe.

- 86.7% of respondents said their decision to shop elsewhere is due to there being more selection elsewhere.

- only 9.4% of respondents said they shopped elsewhere because of lack of parking.

- approximately 77% of people surveyed spend $250 or less dining out per month.

Not all of the lunatics are in the asylum I’m often asked, “What have you learned as a medical journalist?� In one word, “Plenty.� After writing a column for 38 years you would have to be an imbecile not to learn something about medicine, human personality and hypocrisy. But above all else I’ve concluded common sense is an uncommon commodity, and not all lunatics are in the asylum.

Let’s start with the Supreme Court of Canada.

It’s composed of legal experts who, having reached this exalted position, you’d expect to be the ‘crème de la crème’ of this country.

But how much horse sense do they possess about medical matters?

I’d bet my life that if any of these learned judges had a dog suffering in pain, they would end its agony by a veterinarian’s lethal injection. So why not human suffering? For years the Supreme Court has turned a deaf ear to the cries of those destined to end their lives in misery.

In their inďŹ nite wisdom (unlike doctors they haven’t witnessed countless patients dying undigniďŹ ed and painful deaths), they decree that any doctor who deliberately ends human suffering with a lethal injection is committing ‘murder’. This can result in years of incarceration for the physician.

What lunacy, hypocrisy and injustice! When I mention the need for a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Humans (I’d like to remind the Supreme Court and Federal Politicians there is an existing one for animals) I receive huge support from readers who demand that assisted death be made lawful for those who wish it.

Those who argue against assisted suicide are usually religious bigots who have no respect for the moral rights of others. Moreover, these righteous souls distort the historical fact of assisted death.

History shows countries that have legalized assisted death are not overburdened with requests for it.

Rather, those who have the legal right to assisted death rarely use it.

Nor is there any evidence the elderly, those with disabilities or those who simply do not want to be part of assisted death, have ever been forced to seek it. Instead, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms allows ev-

JONES eryone to suffer weeks or months of terminal agony if they desire to do so.

So what is the answer

to this continuing human injustice? It will not come from legal experts in ermine robes in Canada’s Supreme Court. The asinine law will change only when tens of thousands of citizens demand that it be changed.

For years, elected ofďŹ cials have feared the backlash of the bigoted, but well organized, vocal minority who invariably oppose as-

sisted death. They will be more terriďŹ ed only when the silent majority informs them their days in parliament are numbered if they do not pass a law making assisted death legal.

In 1984 I proved this approach worked. I delivered 40,000 letters (not e-mails) from readers to the Minister of Health in Ottawa demanding that heroin be legalized to ease the misery

of terminal cancer pain.

This was followed by other thousands of letters to their own elected ofďŹ cials.

Heroin was soon legalized.

This ďŹ ght for the right to assisted death won’t be easy. But for those who believe as I do about this issue, the only hope is to send a barrage of letters to Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, 24 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, Ontario,

K1M 1M4, demanding that the law be changed to allow assisted death. If all organizations urged their members to do so, it would create a huge ‘ice-bucket challenge’ for justice.

Surely there is no greater crime than to force a life of agony to continue when a loved one cries out, “Please end my suffering.�

OPINION Fitness benefits more than physical It’s not like we needed another reason, but for anyone who still thinks that being a couch potato is a cool thing to be, think again.

New research suggests that physical fitness can benefit you mentally as well as physically.

To be fair, this is not the first time fitness has been linked to mental as well as physical well-being.

Endorphins and endocannabinoids, the ‘feel good’ chemicals released by the body in times of physical exertion, have also been found to have beneficial effects on the mind.

Most recently though, a study has produced findings that suggest working out could stave off depression.

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden conducted a study using mice where they found that changes in skeletal muscles as a result of exercise helped to rid the body of stress-inducing amino acid known as kynurenine that has been linked to depression.

What researchers thought they

would find was that such muscle changes would have beneficial effects on the brain, perhaps something akin to forming a ‘shield’ of sorts that would fend off harmful chemicals. Instead what they discovered was kind of the opposite – that people with fit muscles produce enzymes that actively evacuate such detrimental beings.

This is incredible research for a number of reasons.

At a time when both obesity and depression are growing major problems in our society, these findings could not be more timely.

Society is becoming more and more sedentary as time goes on.

Many people have jobs that require them to sit at desks working on computers for long portions of the day.

Families spend more of their free time watching television and playing video games (although there are some good things to be said about video games in this day and age as well and they are certainly being put to clever new uses).

At the same time, depression and mental illness in general is a growing concern. Last month, Lacombians gathered at the Lacombe Memorial Centre for the Walk for Wellness and Suicide prevention to promote awareness about mental wellness and suicide.

It has been said before that many people turn to suicide when suffering from depression or other mental health issues because there is not enough awareness about the

issues or treatments readily available.

Now, it is possible that a simple treatment which already exists could be readily available to everyone. As it happens, that treatment also fights obesity. It seems to be a mutually beneficial correlation.

As always further research is needed. Brains and muscles of mice are vastly different from brains and muscles of humans. Still, the possibilities are promising.

Notes from the 2014 AUMA Convention Recently, a number of City councillors and I had the privilege of attending the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) 2014 Convention in Edmonton, where a great number of issues of municipal concern were discussed.

The AUMA provides leadership in advocating local government interests to the provincial government and other organizations and provides services that address the needs of its membership.

It cooperates with the government of Alberta in the continued development of sound municipal governance, recommends amendments to city policies and cooperates with any other provincial bodies having similar aims.

Lacombe’s membership in the AUMA is valuable, not only for the reasons outlined above but it also allows us to better network with other municipalities and raise our profile with the provincial government by building mutually beneficial relationships within the various ministries.

There were a great number of items discussed at the 2014 AUMA Convention. I will touch briefly on a few issues I believe can have significant implications for Lacombe.

There is an urgent need for a municipal water policy on stormwater that seeks to mitigate flooding and

CHRISTIE restore natural drainage capacity to pre-development levels; protect water quality, aquatic ecosystem health and minimize impacts on downstream water users.

AUMA is asking the Alberta government to update provincial storm water management guidelines, and to establish a regulatory framework that is more supportive of stormwater reuse projects, protection of wetlands, and flood mitigation that addresses urban flooding as well as riverine flooding.

The Association will also advocate that the federal government resume the Municipal Water and Wastewater Survey program as it provides a valuable benchmark for assessing the efforts of municipalities across the country and the effectiveness of water and wastewater management policies from other jurisdictions.

With regards to schools, AUMA is urging the Alberta government to consider policy direction that ensures costs related to the provision of larger high school sites, land, services, parking lots and

playing fields be the responsibility of the provincial government.

The provincial government would serve as contractor when developing new schools, share the costs associated with the development of lands and clearly express what the municipality is expected to financially contribute to the project.

The Association is also urging the Alberta government to revise the MGA and the School Act, making the province solely responsible for the collection of education property taxes. AUMA’s position is that property taxes should be used exclusively for municipal purposes.

A major concern raised at the convention involved the revisions to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, which has been an important workforce strategy for our City’s labour shortages, especially in the service sector.

Municipalities and business around the province are concerned that recent program changes will restrict access to much-needed workers and jeopardize Alberta’s economic growth.

AUMA believes that federal actions should focus on providing greater clarity on how employers can adequately demonstrate an inability to hire a Canadian worker

and to implement process changes to reduce the cost and time of the Temporary Foreign Worker application process.

Lacombe, along with other member municipalities, fully supports the need to monitor the program and ensure it is being appropriately used.

However, I question why employers in our community are being penalized by restrictive changes when only a small percentage of employers are inappropriately using the program.

Even with the actions already underway to engage under-represented Canadians in our workforce, Alberta needs a responsive and effective Temporary Foreign Worker Program as a key component to address its chronic and increasing labour shortages.

I am now in my fourth year of serving on the AUMA Board of Directors and third year on the Executive as the Vice-president of Cities up to 500,000.

As an elected representative for the City of Lacombe, I want to serve the public and be an active participant in influencing positive change and being a board member provides me with additional opportunities to do so.

Letters to the editor

Canadian University College president excited for name change Many of you have heard by now that back in July Alberta’s then Premier Dave Hancock gave CUC, along with four other faith-based post-secondary institutions in Alberta permission to legally drop the word ‘college’ from its current or new name. Please let me share with you why making this change will benefit our students.

Many employers and graduate school admission committees don’t fully understand what a ‘university college’ is. A university college in one part of the world is completely different in authority and function to a university college in another part of the world.

In Canada alone there are three definitions of a university college.

In some provinces a university college has authority to offer college diplomas or certificates and undergraduate degrees. In other parts of Canada a university college is merely a subsidiary of a large university

and lacks its own degree-granting power.

Here in Alberta, a university college is an independent post-secondary institution with its own board and authority to grant university degrees in its own name.

In the United States, some universities have a university college division that simply offers random continuing education courses or deals with the needs of nontraditional students, but does not grant degrees.

Other U.S. universities refer to all of their students’ first year, that time before they are formally accepted into a degree program, as the university college experience.

In many parts of Europe a university college is an institution that offers university level courses, but does not have full or independent university status or degreegranting authority.

Classes taken at such a university college lead to receiving a degree from another institution.

Walk for Wellness and Suicide Prevention ‘founded’ by many The Sept. 18th edition of the Lacombe Express had a greatly appreciated followup article about the recent Walk for Wellness and Suicide Prevention but there was one sentence that I really feel needs to be clarified.

The article included the phrase, “Heather Jackson, who founded the Walk........”.

That is not accurate or how I want others to see it.

The event was born out of necessity and by a coming together of hearts and likeminded people who see the need for change and have committed their time, knowledge and/or personal experience to assist in helping others.

Barb Walker of Lacombe Neighborhood Place, Dawne Adkins of Suicide Information & Education Services in Red Deer and staff from Alberta Health Prevention Services and Mental Health and myself have all worked together to make this happen

for the last three years.

It was suggested by me, yes, after my daughter and I attended a similar event in Edmonton after our son died by suicide.

But it was founded by the souls lost to suicide, the people who have attempted or contemplated suicide but found the strength to stay, and the thousands of people whose lives have been forever changed by a loss to suicide.

Without them and the many community members who have stepped up to volunteer, speak their personal truths, push for change and seek answers to this global issue, the Walk would not exist.

So I thank you all and will continue with my colleagues and friends in memory of those we’ve lost and in hopes that we can prevent more losses and more pain.

Get immunized this fall before influenza arrives It happens every year: influenza arrives in Alberta.

The good news is, influenza vaccine gets here first. All Albertans are encouraged to take advantage and get immunized before influenza arrives.

Alberta’s annual influenza immunization program begins Oct. 20th, offering influenza vaccine, free of charge, to all Albertans six months of age and older.

Because the province of Alberta has given us the authority to grant post-secondary degrees in our own name, we are what nearly all people around the world think of as a university.

Dropping the word ‘college’ from our current or new name will clear up much confusion and more accurately describe our status as an independent degree-granting institution. T his will be a very significant, ongoing benefit to CUC’s students as they seek employment or entrance to graduate school.

To ensure the process of changing CUC’s name is as open and transparent as possible, we have been holding meetings with representatives from all of our constituencies, gathering their ideas. Last week our facilitator met with a group of Lacombians in the LMC seeking their input in this important process.

One of my goals as CUC’s president is to encourage all Lacombians to more fully

enjoy the cultural, academic and health/ fitness benefits our university offers.

All of us at CUC want to enhance Lacombe’s reputation as a ‘university town.’ That’s why we held one of our name-change focus groups at the LMC. That’s why senior citizens can take classes at CUC at no charge (when space is available). That’s why we accept students of any faith.

These are just a few of the many things we do to invite citizens of Lacombe to consider CUC part of the family.

Writer concerned over the use of public school funding As a taxpayer who supports Wolf Creek Public Schools and a parent of four schoolaged children, I feel it is important to stay informed of school board decisions.

Through the public web site of WCPS, I was able to read the minutes of recent board of trustee meetings and have discovered some disturbing information. At a special meeting held on April 2nd, senior administration staff were awarded salary increases of between 5.68% and 5.83% and were also given a Self Invested Pension Plan (SIPP).

There is also a possibility of them being given a Special Executive Retirement Pension (SERP) in the future.

At the Sept. 3rd meeting, support staff employed by the board (maintenance workers, custodial staff, bus drivers, etc.) were given a 1% raise, perhaps as a morale boost.

At this same meeting, it is recorded that the entire senior administrative team and their assistants were in San Diego from Oct. 1st-6th to attend a Google summit.

A quick Internet search reveals that the summit took place on Oct. 4th-5th and that flights from Alberta to San Diego are available daily.

Now it appears that, as a taxpayer, I am funding a six-day trip to sunny California for 10 people to attend a summit that is only two days long.

Also, at this same Sept. 3rd meeting, I read that a team from Wolf Creek will be going to China for an 11-day trip.

From the minutes, it seems the entire rest of the province is sending five people in total. Like the old song, Nice Work If You Can Get It. At a time when school fees are increasing, extracurricular fundraisers are common and support staff are required to practice strict economies, I feel this sort of prodigal spending is unfair and unwarranted. Reminiscent of ex-premier of Alberta Alison Redford.

POLICE BRIEFS BLACKFALDS RESPONDS TO STRUCTURE FIRES On Oct. 6th, the Blackfalds Fire department responded to two structure fires, one during the day and another later that night.

The first fire was a kitchen fire in a mobile home in the trailer park on the north end of Blackfalds.

Fire Chief Robert Coté said firefighters were ultimately able to extinguish the fire, which began on a stovetop in the kitchen.

They were also able to save the building but the entire residence was full of smoke when they arrived.

Blackfalds RCMP Detachment Commander Ken Morrison also said RCMP are investigating a sudden death in relation to the fire.

He added this fire took place in a different unit than last Monday’s mobile home fire and the two incidents are not connected.

Coté said no bystanders were hurt in the blaze.

That night, Blackfalds Fire also responded to a fire in-

side an abandoned farm implement building within the Town limits.

Coté said the structure was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived and the building was consumed by fire, but firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the original property line with minimal impact to the surrounded grassy areas.

Coté added the blaze is a suspected arson and that two youths were seen fleeing the scene. Morrison said anyone with information regarding this incident or the two youths is asked to contact Blackfalds RCMP.

CREWS RESPOND TO COLLISIONS Lacombe emergency crews responded to two motor vehicle collisions in the last week, both on QE II Hwy. The first incident was called in at about 6:30 p.m. the evening of Oct. 1st.

A car and truck had collided at the intersection of Hwy. 2A and Hwy. 12. The second instance was at 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 4th and was a single ve-

Fire crews cleaned up leaking fluid and disconnected battery cables on the vehicles to be towed while EMS treated patients.

At the first collision inside the City, van Delden said EMS treated the driver of the car involved in the collision. In the single vehicle rollover on the QEII, those involved were treated for glass injuries.

ARMED ROBBERY AT BLACKFALDS FAS GAS On Oct. 1st, at 11:43 p.m. a lone male clad in black clothing from head to toe, wearing a mask and carrying a hand gun entered the Fas Gas in Blackfalds.

The male demanded the employee to empty the cash register of its cash and then demanded cigarettes from the storage racks behind the counter.

The male then departed the store with an undisclosed

amount of money and cigarettes and proceeded east on Panorama Drive. The employee did not sustain any injuries but was emotionally shaken.

COURT BRIEFS ACCUSED DRUNK DRIVER IN COURT A man facing numerous charges after an incident on an area highway last month has made his second court appearance in Red Deer provincial court.

William Joel Cameron of Red Deer is facing seven charges including impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and failure to stop and assist an injured person and possession of stolen property.

Cameron, who remains in custody, and appeared via closed circuit television, had his case held over as he is currently waiting for a lawyer to be appointed to him through legal aid.

RCMP are following up leads in this matter and the investigation is continuing.

There, the RCMP officer lost sight of the vehicle which went on to hit a pedestrian.

Officers from the Lacombe Police Service attended to assist the 22-year-old woman who was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton with serious injuries.

The vehicle did not stop after it hit the woman.

The RCMP officer continued his efforts to locate the vehicle and did so when it came to a stop on Lakeside Sargent Road in the rural outskirts of Lacombe. The adult male driver of the vehicle and two male young persons were taken into and remain in RCMP custody.

The victim has been identified as Leah Cobetto of Lacombe.

The City’s ‘Fall Clean-up’ starts next Tuesday The City of Lacombe’s annual fall Community Clean Up Campaign – a special pickup that provides residents with an opportunity to dispose of household and yard refuse that one would not normally place in the regular garbage bins – will be held from Oct. 14th to 23rd.

“We are looking forward to working with residents to keep basements and garages uncluttered and neighbourhood alleyways free of debris,” said Infrastructure Services Director Matthew Goudy.

“Residents are reminded that it is their responsibility to sort and neatly tie, bundle or bag their refuse items for pick up at the front of their properties by 7 a.m. on the day their area is scheduled for pick up,” said Utilities Manager Chris Huston.

“Different trucks and equipment are designated to pick up certain items; therefore having separated piles will ease operations.”

Trees, brush or limbs cannot be more than 10 ft. long or they will not be picked up.

Please do not place items on the sidewalk, alley or street; items must be left at the property line.

Ensure that pedestrian and vehicle traffic are not blocked.

Do not place refuse next to or touching the bin used for normal household garbage pickup.

Please do not set items out before Oct. 14th.

Residents are asked to separate their waste according to the list below for pick up: - brush and wood: treated, painted and stained wood needs to be separated into a general rubble pile.

- leaves, sod and garden waste: these items can also be taken to the Wolf Creek recycle site. In addition, leaves and garden waste can be disposed of in the green coloured yard waste bins spread throughout the City.

- metals and furniture.

- appliances including fridge, freezers and air conditioning units: All food must be removed.

- swing sets and trampolines: dismantle and separate according to metal/ plastic components.

- e-waste: TVs, computers, printers, etc.

Items that will not be picked up include: - unmanageable piles and piles not sorted or separated.

- hazardous Waste – oil, cleaning solutions, paint, antifreeze, aerosols, railway ties, etc. The City holds an annual ‘Toxic Waste Roundup’ in September for these type of materials.

- construction waste – drywall, concrete, roofing materials, porcelain toilets or sinks, etc.

- cardboard - break down boxes and place them in blue bins or take to the Wolf Creek Drive recycle site for proper disposal.

The City of Lacombe has released a report outlining the results of the recent retail survey conducted to better understand Lacombe’s retail trade area, which refers to the geographic area from which a community generates the majority of its customers. This area can also be referred as the market area or customer catchment area.

Over 1000 responses to the survey were received, with approximately 22 percent of responses coming from people who live outside of Lacombe. Key ďŹ ndings of the retail survey indicate that: • 61 percent of those surveyed were between the ages of 31 and 55 • 78 percent of respondents live in Lacombe

Businesses will also have an opportunity to review the ďŹ ndings and identify data to help them in making business decisions. Annual Christmas Light Exchange Program The City of Lacombe will kick o its third annual Christmas Light Exchange program on October 14, 2014, at City Hall (5432-56 Avenue). This program, oered in partnership by the City of Lacombe and Fortis Alberta, will help residents save energy and money over the holiday season while decorating their homes.

What’s New Healthy Halloween

Halloween – a time to dress up in costume and stock up on candy. No wonder kids love this time of year!

Halloween can be frustrating for parents who don’t want to send mixed messages by letting their children go candy crazy.

How to participate?

Bring two strings of incandescent, exterior holiday lights to City Hall, where you will receive one box of new, energy eďŹƒcient LED lights. There is a limit of one box of free LED lights per adult per household. Adults must be present to claim lights.

Why replace incandescent holiday lights?

Did you know that switching to LED lights can reduce power consumption and help decrease your holiday bills? An average home, running six strings of incandescent holiday lights for six hours a day, consumes about 78 kWh of energy over the holiday season.

Replacing those old lights with an equivalent number of LED lights would use only 5 kWh for the entire month, saving enough energy to power an average Lacombe home for four days.

Public Notice Fall Community Cleanup Campaign The fall Community Cleanup Campaign will be held from October 14-23, 2014. The semi-annual campaign provides residents with an opportunity to dispose of household and yard refuse that cannot be placed out for regular collection.

The campaign starts on the Tuesday after the Thanksgiving holiday long weekend. Residents are asked to place their refuse items out for disposal at the front of their properties by 7 a.m. on the day their area is scheduled for pick-up. Refuse must be organized and separated into piles for pick-up.

Here are some ideas to lessen the impact of candy on your children’s oral health: Control the amount of candy: • Set limits ahead of time by sitting down with your child and talking about what is a reasonable amount of candy to collect. • Sort candy and remove items your child does not like or may not be safe. • Limit the number of times your child eats candy. The more times a day they eat it, the greater the risk of tooth decay. • Avoid bringing candy to school. • Have candy after meals instead of as a snack, the extra saliva produced at mealtimes helps provide some protection to teeth. • Use Halloween candy for craft projects.

Oer alternatives to candy: • Hand out stickers, temporary tattoos, bubbles or Halloween themed pencils.

End the Halloween season: • Set a date when it’s no longer Halloween at your house so you can return to normal, healthy eating and snacking routines. • Brush and oss with extra care and attention: • Brush twice a day with uoride toothpaste. • Floss between teeth regularly. • Supervise your child as needed.

Additional protection for teeth: • Ask your dentist about uoride treatments and dental sealants to protect your child’s teeth from tooth decay.

On Oct. 5th, the Blackfalds Wranglers won a 5-4 victory over the Airdrie Thunder in their first home game of the season.

Coach Sean Neumeier said he wasn’t impressed with the Wranglers slow start, but was confident they would be able to pick up the pace as the game went on.

“A lot of bounces didn’t go our way for awhile,” said Neumeier.

“Our slow starts have actually been one of our Achilles’ Heels lately. We’ve been down in a few games but we always manage to battle back so we are pretty used to that situation unfortunately.”

At the end of the first period, things were still even with the game tied at one.

In the second period however, it looked like Blackfalds may have run into some trouble when Airdrie score two goals in close succession less than halfway into the period.

Neumeier said even though the Wranglers were down by a point at the end of the second with a score of 3-2, there was still plenty of game left for them to make a comeback.

“We usually score more than three, so we weren’t too worried,” said Neumeier.

In the third, Blackfalds wasted little time in evening up the score, scoring their third goal less than three minutes in.

Five minutes later, they pulled ahead of the Thunder with another goal and things looked good for a Wranglers victory.

However, Airdrie was not about to give up so easily, they made Blackfalds work for the victory, tying things up again about 12 minutes into the third and making the Wranglers fight for their fifth and final goal with about six minutes left in the game.

Throughout the game, there were plenty of scuffles behind the play and after the whistle.

Even though the game was so early in the season, players on both teams were at each other’s throats (sometimes literally) as early as midway through the second period. “Lots of players carry over, right?” said Neumeier. “So they know each other (from previous seasons). It’s just going to get worse.”

In fact, most of the Blackfalds roster is filled with veterans from last year’s team when the Wran-

glers claimed gold at the provincial championships.

Neumeier said there are only about six rookies on the team’s long roster and all of them are stepping up to do their part and contribute to the team as well.

Blackfalds’ extensive roster is actually one of its biggest strengths, said Neumeier. He said the team has a lot of depth and is able to run four lines most games, as opposed to three like many other teams which prolongs the Wrangler’s endurance.

down because other teams can’t do that,” said Neumeier.

On the other hand, the Wrangler’s biggest weaknesses are playing out of their own end and the slow starts.

However, Neumeier said the season is young and there is plenty of room for improvement.

“There is lots of rust flying off still,” said Neumeier. “Things are a little sloppy right now for my liking but they will get better.”

In hockey, like all sports, nothing is certain, but Neumeier said it is very possible the Wranglers

Neumeier added that another of Blackfalds’ strengths is the incredible team chemistry the players share.

“They are a very tight group,” said Neumeier. “That’s what helped them out last year. No one said we were the most talented team in the province last year but they will fight so hard for each other because they are so close.

That helps a lot.”

Third annual Gull Lake Adventure Race a success

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Adventurers converged on Gull Lake this past week to participate in the annual fundraising adventure race from Oct. 3rd-4th.

This year’s event was very successful, said Gull Lake Centre Executive Director Steve Roadhouse.

“It was good, we made this year a little bit longer and a little bit harder than last year and I think it was fun,” said Roadhouse.

“The weather was great and I think the racers had a lot of fun.”

Roadhouse added that the purpose of making the race longer and more challenging was to emphasize more on the “adventure” side of the Gull Lake Adventure Race.

He said that organizers made the bicycle portion of the race longer and added more puzzles to the race to make it more challenging.

Racer Alex Miller was pleased to return to the Gull Lake Adventure Race for the second time after participating in the first Adventure Race but missing last year’s.

Miller is a graduate of Gull Lake Centre’s Leadership Training and Discipleship Program (LTD), the cause the Gull Lake Adventure Race supports, and that is what led him to participating in the race the first time.

“I want to do it every year,” said Miller. “It’s a lot of fun and there are good challenges.”

Miller said that the LTD program has been incredibly valuable to him in his life and he wanted to do his part to help eliminate the barrier of cost for other youth who may want to take advantage of the program.

“If a kid can’t afford to come because they don’t have the money, that’s a terrible reason to not be able to do the program,” said Miller.

“So if they have things like this to raise money for the kids who don’t have their own funds to get into the program then that’s really great.”

In particular, his selfconfidence has increased significantly.

The final phase of the race, the head-to-head team challenges, were Miller’s favourite part, he said.

He said he is more competent at them than running or cycling through trails.

From his own perspective, Roadhouse said the hatchet toss challenge and the milk crate challenge, where racers had to climb on top of seven milk crates and change positions (while being secured with safety harnesses) seemed to be the most interesting.

He said that every year the race takes a lot of time and effort to put together, but it is certainly always worth it.

“It’s a blast,” said Roadhouse.

“It’s a lot of work putting it on but it’s well worth it because it is a lot of fun,” he added.

That’s not to say everything went off without a hitch though.

Roadhouse said the first event, where each team would have to build a fire on the beach to boil water before they could begin the race, had an elaborate beginning that was botched somewhat.

Roadhouse had arranged for a friend of his with a private plane to do an airdrop with the matches to light the fires.

Unfortunately, the flagging tape that was used to mark the packages all bunched together and they all got hooked on the tail of the airplane.

Roadhouse said about 400 hours of work goes into planning the race every year.

He added he has already started work on next year’s race, which will take place Oct. 2nd-3rd.

“I started planning next year’s race about a month ago,” said Roadhouse.

This year, 10 teams of four participated in the Gull Lake Adventure Race.

As for the fundraising, Roadhouse said he hadn’t completely totaled the numbers yet, but estimated the event had pulled in over $23,000 which was about what was expected. news@lacombeexpress.com

Gifted singer includes Red Deer on current tour Fans can hear tunes from WiL’s newly-released project El Paseo

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Vancouver Island singer/songwriter WiL had plenty of sonic choices to explore when it came time to mapping out his fifth CD, El Paseo, released late last month.

Local fans can check out the stellar results when he performs at The Vat in Red Deer on Oct. 11th.

Wil Mimnaugh (WiL), had several songs ready to go including Roam, featured in the video for Travel Alberta’s media campaign ‘Remember to Breathe.’ The only thing left to do was find the funds to record, which his manager did using a crowd-funding platform called FANPUSH. WiL’s fans met his goal in a matter of days, leaving him inspired to write a few more songs along the way, settling on 11 tracks.

“These songs just came pouring out of me; they are some of the best songs I feel I have ever written to date and am so grateful that I was able to record these songs and put the best of what we got on the new record,” he said.

‘El Paseo’, when translated from Spanish to English, means ‘The Ride’.”

The results are exceptional – from the opening cut Hold Me On, the haunting charms of the title track and You Know I Do to the terrifically-crafted showstopper A Whoo Hoo complete with its rich, textured guitars, a touch of banjo and the superbly arranged vocals. WiL is a master at melding genres, tapping into the best in creating his own unique approach to creating music.

And the best way to head into a season of recording? Don’t go heavy on the planning.

“I found out a long time ago that having a pre-conceived notion of what we were looking to do - you just never meet those expectations,” he explains of his approach to recording.

WiL has admitted that he’s not a huge fan of making records – it’s the ‘live’ shows that really get him excited. Studio work can bring a sense of looking at things just too closely, he points out.

“You’re trying to control an elusive thing.”

That in itself can be a hit or miss kind of thing, but when it works well it’s a gift.

That said, he does have fun with the collaborative elements.

“I always defer to laughter and stupidity over drama and anger,” he laughs. “I’m enjoying it more now because of what I’ve learned.”

Still, there’s nothing like hitting the road and connecting with fans.

“I just love the live, organic environment so much – if I had it all my way, that’s all I would ever do. I’m also a huge fan of improvisational, sporadic stuff – like when you show up at a show and it’s 20 below and the propane cans are shutting off. You’re late for a sound check because you got rear-ended somewhere – nobody cares about your day, but you have to make it work.

“So you are up on stage frazzled like bee hive and all of a sudden you just plug in and you have the show of the year.”

It was an impromptu performance at The Barley Mill in Calgary that led to a six-year run playing cover tunes and a reputation as ‘that solo guy who breaks strings and packs bars.’ WiL used the skills he had learned playing covers to write eight songs which became his first CD Both Hands, released in 2002. That project was followed with By December. Other CD highlights include In This Together and last year’s Live at the Ironwood – recorded in Calgary.

As to his latest disc, with a desire to produce the album himself, WiL enlisted the aid of studio engineer/multi-instrumentalist and owner of Poplar Sound Stu-

“This record, as much work as it was, had an equal amount of wonderful back and forth between Jayme and I over almost nine solid months.” They recorded the track Hold Me On in a three-day session that cemented their collective wish to forge ahead.

As for Langen, WiL can’t think of a better guy to team up with.

“He listens – he’s a remarkable listener. He’s processing while he listens – he doesn’t just pretend to listen. I sometimes talk a lot – I can’t just answer yes or no, I’ll give a big preamble to it. But he’ll listen, so he’s amazing that way.

Plus he’s phenomenal drummer, a bass player and an incredible guitar player. He wears all these hats very well.

“He also has the perfect amount of humility.”

Looking back, his love of music came early on.

On Friday nights he would sit and listen while his folks played and sung along to legends such as Johnny Cash, Chet Atkins and Hank Williams.

“My father was a weekend warrior who played guitar and sang – my mom came from a choir background and ended up with an amazing voice,” he recalls.

“On the weekends, after my parents worked really hard all week there would be kitchen parties with friends and family. I loved it – there was also always vinyl being played. My mom would clean the house with the vinyl cranked – listening to Nana Mouskouri or

By the time he was 13, he was defining his playing style blending his love of ‘old school country’ with new influences. “Before I knew it, I was listening to anything I could get my hands on. I didn’t care what it was or where it came from.”

As for where he is these days, he couldn’t be more pleased. And he can’t wait to show fans what the new CD has to offer.

“This is easily the closest one yet,” he explains of the disc’s capturing of what makes him tick.

“How I feel and what I do live – this is the closest thing to the demos that I’ve had going which is lovely.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Bergeron brings brand of country gospel to Rimbey

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Country gospel entertainment seekers in Central Alberta can flock to Rimbey for a night of song performed by Debbie Bergeron with guests Visions Country Gospel.

Bergeron will be bringing her brand of country gospel to the United Church on the evening of Oct. 18th at 8 p.m. Tickets are only $20 and are available through the United Church.

“I want people to come and feel happy – I want them to feel joy and share in the moment.

It’s a connection,” said Bergeron about what she hopes to accomplish with her concert. “For two hours, people can feel a peace and

joy in life, relaxing and soaking it in. It’s just about the connection – it may not last long but it’s for an evening and I really hope that people enjoy what we do.”

Bergeron is an accomplished singer who has performed from British Columbia all the way to Nashville. She has won several awards in her field from the B.C. Country Music Association including ‘Female Vocalist of the Year’, ‘Entertainer of the Year’ and ‘Country Gospel Performer of the Year’ twice.

She has performed four times for the Christian Country Music Association of Nashville.

“I had been traveling back and forth to Nashville as a member of the Nashville Songwriting Association International and going

back and forth to Nashville for songwriting seminars. I was trying to hone my skill a bit,” said Bergeron.

“My dream was first to go to Nashville and I had accomplished that a few times over so I decided that I was actually going to record in Nashville. That was one of the big things off my bucket list – that was a real dream come true. Once that happened, my career just kind of snowballed and took off.”

Last year, Bergeron moved to the small town of Rimbey and began to establish a connection with her community. She produced her first Christmas concert in the town that year and says she looks forward to another after the positive community response she received. “I’ve grown up with

country gospel and thought I’d love to present it here. I look forward to sharing my music and to having folks get to know me.”

Bergeron met Jim Escott of Visions Country Gospel last year during the annual Blackfalds Country Gospel Weekend, where she performed this year.

“I am so excited to share the evening with Visions. I was honoured to be invited to perform at the Country Gospel Weekend this year, and I believe our audience is in for a great performance. I had a great time,” she said.

Bergeron will be performing at the United Church at 8 p.m. Tickets will be made available at the door but pre-sale is recommended. Tickets can be purchased by phone or in person at the United Church.

“The performance is songs that I’ve grown up with. It would be traditional country gospel. I have my own original music in there as well and some songs of inspiration. There are songs that have touched me and I hope that they will touch others,” said Bergeron.

“Again, I am just excited about having folks get to know me better. I’m happy to offer an evening of great entertainment to be enjoyed and to share the love of God. I’m looking forward to branching out to other towns and communities to share the music.”

Cookbooks: a wealth of inspiration at our fingertips One of the oddest couples I have ever met was after one of my live cooking performances at a local fair. A woman in the distant crowd was watching the tail end of my show and approached me afterwards.

“I can see by watching you that you love to cook,” she said.

“I can see that the crowd was inspired by your show, but my husband and I, we never cook. You could even go as far as saying that we hate to cook, so we never do it. You may think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not. We never cook. We eat in restaurants, get take-out, fast food and buy microwave prepared dinners.”

I was shocked, to say the least. My first thought was “Why are you telling me this?”

Then she went on and asked me, “I bet you can’t guess what we use our oven for?”

I shrugged my shoulders and she said, “To store cookbooks. It’s wasted space for us, so we use it as a bookshelf.”

This was the oddest thing I have ever heard.

“Why do you even own cookbooks, if you don’t cook?” I asked.

“Doesn’t everybody?” she replied.

Good point. She’s right.

Everyone has a collection of cookbooks, either large or small, apparently even people that don’t cook.

I am assuming that they must have received them as gifts?

We all get into cooking ruts at times in our lives and our meals in the meantime suffer from lack of stimulation - you’re not alone.

However, right there in your own home, you have an assortment of cookbooks just waiting to be opened, pondered through and used.

I have a challenge for you. At some point over the next seven days from reading this column, I challenge you to open up one of those cookbooks. Not one that you received as a gift, but one that you purchased yourself with your hard earned money.

I want you to relive the moment when you bought it. The moment when you are flipping through the pages with excitement and motivation, saying to yourself, “I gotta have this book” as you lay your cold hard cash down on the counter. Find those recipes again, and this time, make them.

Motivation can easily be stimulated from outside sources (such as cookbook recipes in this case), but true motivation comes from within you.

You have to take that first step, the steps that follow, and the final step to make something happen. If you are truly discouraged with the same old meals you are making, you will find a way to make this happen.

Many cookbooks simply just gather dust because we either forget about them, or more likely find that there is too much emotional pain to learn new recipes and we stick with what we know.

It’s easier.

I guarantee you this however, if you take the steps and keep trying (even through times of possible mistakes or failures), you will succeed.

Your meals will become new again and with any luck you will find happiness in your newfound

inspiration that has been there with you, waiting for you, all along.

Take this success and let it inspire you to keep learning new recipes.

Chances are you have a kitchen and plan to continue to eat the rest of your life, so this will not be a waste of your time.

I could at this time also make the suggestion of searching the Internet for recipe ideas, but I think that with your vested interest in the cookbooks you have already purchased, you will be more driven (and in the end, more fulfilled) to create this victory yourself.

Sun in the sky, you know how I feel. If you have read my column for any length of time you KNOW that I love fall! The sweaters come out of storage, boots are worn and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love the smell and feel of a new leather jacket or gloves at this time of year.

It also brings out all things pumpkin – the fall of 2014 seems to be going pumpkin spice crazy as everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. In my mind there can never be too much pumpkin loving around, no colour on earth gives me that warm snuggly feeling like pumpkin and the

Benjamin Moore paints has a colour called Buttered Yam (AF230) and even though it might be scary for some of you to apply to your walls, it would make a great accent colour in any colour scheme. Even if it is in small accessories or artwork give this fall favorite a try, I just know you will love it. Even better, combine the colour with the scent in any room for that perfect fall experience.

I know you have read it a dozen times and every home expert has written an article on fall scents and sights but many of us forget to put the practice into our home

– me included!

I don’t think there are many aromatics that will give you the calm snuggly feeling that pumpkin spice and all its associates will.

The combination of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves can bring almost anyone who enters your home into a state of relaxation and peace. It is something you may want simmering on your stove for the next month or so until Christmas scents and sights begin to take over with their glitz and sharp peppermint tones.

For now enjoy the relaxing tones of pumpkin and all its spicy friends, I’m off to get a latte!
