2014 A-List Our A-List feature continues to be one of the most popular editions of the year and we are pleased to bring you our 2014 list of community favourites!
less fortunate among us.
It’s a chance for you, our readers, to tell us about some of your favourite people, places, businesses and activities in the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, and judging by the volume of responses we received, you had no problem identifying a great many. This is not a scientific poll, nor is it designed to rank one thing above another, but simply a collection of ideas and opinions from people that will hopefully help to inform and entertain the rest of us. Possibly also help us to discover some as yet undiscovered treasures right here in our own backyard. Maybe it will simply serve to remind us of all the reasons we choose to call Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows home. For me, it’s all about the caring spirit and generosity of our citizens, people who go above and beyond the normal call to ensure that we don’t overlook those
It’s also about our sense of fun and celebration, from the True North Fraser Bluegrass Festival to the City of Pitt Meadows’ Centennial celebration – from the Caribbean Festival to the Rotary Duck Race – we know how to enjoy ourselves and take care of each other. Maybe you won’t see your favourites listed herein, but that should just encourage you to participate in next year’s A-List. There is always something new to discover. So, read on and enjoy the 2014 A-List! We could not produce it without your participation. Jim Coulter Publisher Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows News Jim Coulter, Publisher of The News

As a federal politician for 10 years, I’ve had the opportunity to travel throughout our great country and visit many interesting and impressive communities. But when I cross the Pitt River Bridge, I’m always reminded that our area is the most appealing setting in all of Canada.
Fuller Watson Brand Source Home Furnishings, Great Space’s Furniture, Home Envy, The Brick
Favourite Sport or Outdoor Store Bill’s Skate Shop, First Touch Soccer, Sport Chek, Wanstalls
I grew up here, so I admit that I might be biased. But how can you not appreciate our spectacular mountains, impressive rivers and streams, picturesque farmland, and a network of dikes that are just begging to be walked on? With this natural beauty all around us, in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge you can find almost unlimited opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.
Favourite Bike Shop Caps Westwood Cycle, Maple Ridge Cycle, Pitt Meadows Cycle
Randy Kamp, MP
I know I love my bike rides on the dikes and I enjoy the serenity that comes from strolling by the Fraser River in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. And I love taking my many grandchildren to the spray parks at Harris Road Park and Maple Ridge Park. But our area has more than just natural beauty. It has community-minded residents who volunteer their time and resources because they care about keeping Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge a great place to live. I’m always impressed when I see busy people, many of whom spend hours commuting to and from work, getting involved in children’s sports, helping at the food bank, supporting a school band program, serving in their church or other volunteer organization.
Favourite Music Store G&G Music, The CD Shack
Favourite Audio Video Store Diamond Stereo, Haney Sewing & Sound/Audio Video Unlimited, London Drugs
Favourite Flooring Store Diverse Flooring, End of the Roll Discount Carpet & Flooring, McDonald’s Flooring

It’s been a great pleasure, the past 20 years, residing in both Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, the latter being British Columbia’s newest city. I count it an honour and privilege to represent our region as a legislator. I grew up in military bases across the country and I remember, as an elementary school student, drawing pictures of where I wanted to eventually reside. Our communities fit the dream to a tee – tucked in verdant forests, snow-capped mountains and flowing rivers. It’s always a joy talking a walk along the dykes or hiking to the waterfalls at Golden Ears Park, probably the most popular provincial park in British Columbia. Marc Dalton, MLA As in every community, we face challenges, but I am appreciative of our quality of life and the quality of the people who call Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows home.

Favourite building around town It occupies a commanding place in beautiful Memorial Peace Park in downtown Maple Ridge, so why shouldn't the Arts Centre Theatre be one of the top-ranked buildings? Walk through the glass doors and you're greeted with an art gallery on your left side, a wide staircase leading to the second storey to the right, and carpeted passages to the main theatre, as well as to the Genstar Theatre. The ACT, with ceiling-to-floor glass panels, is within easy walking distance of an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants. Full bar, reception area, box office services and convenient underground parking compliment this venue. The Main Stage of The ACT is an intimate, 486-seat theatre, which features a sprung floor.
The smaller Genstar Studio Theatre is a flat floor "black box" style with flexible seating for up to 150 people. Next door to the ACT, the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre rang in as your second-most favourite building. The Maple Ridge Leisure Centre has been keeping people fit and happy for 30 years. Two 25-metre swimming pools are available for laps or just floating around. A hot tub's available to soothe those tired muscles after working out in the fitness centre. There's also a wading pool, toddler's pool and water slide. Wheelchair lifts are available for all pools.
with a prominent stair tower. Clad in rug brick facing with stone trim, this is a handsome and sophisticated addition to the town centre," says the Heritage Resources of Maple Ridge, by Donald Luxton and Associates.
You used to pick up your mail at what's now the European Bakery. But one of Maple Ridge's most notable buildings served for decades as the main post office downtown and is your thirdfavourite building.
According historian Sheila Nickols, in her Looking Back column from 1999, the building was built in 1950 from special bricks made by the Haney Brick and Tile Company. The ribbon cutting was done by the wife of Maple Ridge Reeve Solomon Mussallem. People used to pick up their mail at the post office, as door-to-door delivery didn't start until the 1960s.
The brick structure still dominates the street scene on Maple Ridge's main drag, 224th Street at Selkirk Avenue. According to the community heritage commission, the building is an early use of the new modern styles of architecture, in contrast to the wooden buildings that predominated the area. "The post office displays an irregular massing,
If you want to check out the building, it'll be hard to resist the baked goodies inside, of which the cinnamon bun tops the list.

Sarah Benson reviewed 2 weeks ago The guys at Haney Automotive are fantastic! They were accommodating to my needs, being as I was in a tough situation. They explained things about my vehicle to me in a way that I could actually understand (I don’t speak “car”). They were finished when they said they would be finished. And they said they would even send out reminders of when I will need servicing again so I don’t end up in another dangerous situation. I can’t express in words how much I appreciate all their hard work and friendly attitude. I would recommend Haney Automotive to anyone. Thanks Brandon!

Small town nature, deep roots By Sandy Macdougall
Five generations of my family have called Maple Ridge home.
We have all had opportunities to move elsewhere, but have always returned to the place that makes us feel comfortable and safe. A couple of years ago my oldest daughter and
sesiurC
one of her sons purchased a home across the tracks in Hammond, which results in two of my greatgrandchildren attending Hammond elementary school. I never attended Hammond elementary, but I did have an office in the school and all of my children attended there, as did most of my grandchildren and now my great-grandchildren.

Recognizing Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows’ Finest
My A-list By Jack Emberly
"Look deeply into nature and then you will understand everything" – Albert Einstein. In Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, I don’t have to go far to immerse myself in nature. I like to do this in a kayak or canoe, but it’s possible from a vehicle pulled to the side of the road – that is, if you look deeply. One of my favorite spots for that is along Neaves Road, at the south end of the North Alouette River Bridge. Driving north towards Pitt Lake, you’d pull over on the east side, turn off the engine, and look out the passenger window at a pond the river fills and empties with the tides. At low tide last time, my wife and I watched a family of four frolicking otters scurry past a heron posed to spear sticklebacks. Suddenly, a few feet away, the shallow water was shattered by the fins of larger fish, probably bass, hastily leaving the scene.
Walking the dogs along one of our many dykes "What is … is right," said 18th Century poet Alexander Pope.
To see what he meant, all you need to do is pull over on Neaves Rd.
and focus on the natural wonder of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

The Pitt Polder, then Kanaka Creek and Golden Ears parks are your favorite places to watch birds. The Pitt Polder is a natural rest stop for birds migrating between Alaska and Patagonia, providing habitat for species like the great sandhill crane and the tundra swan. At Golden Ears Provincial Park listen for woodpeckers and chickadees while strolling through the nature trails. At Kanaka Creek Regional Park watch for herons and kingfishers. And areas like Grant Narrows Regional Park, where 200-plus species of birds and waterfowl habitat in the Pitt-Addington Marsh Wildlife Management Area, offer possible sightings of orioles, thrushes, trumpeter swans, warblers and more. The observation towers offer excellent opportunities to catch of glimpse of nesting ospreys between May and August.

Local Market Part of A-List By Eileen Dwillies, executive director Haney Farmers Market Society
We appreciate being acknowledged by the readers of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News by being chosen as one of the 2014 A-list favorite community events. The Haney Farmers Market, now in its 10th year, is a lively Saturday morning event, running rain or shine for 30 weeks in Memorial Peace Park in downtown Maple Ridge. There you will find fresh farm produce, fruit, plants and flowers, eggs, cheese, sausage, preserves, jams, jellies, home baking, artisanal crafts, creams, lotions, fine art and fibre art. Challenging children's crafts, a giant chess set and lively entertainment encourage families to stay awhile. But it is not just the hand-made food and freshly picked produce that makes it special. It’s the whole experience, from the brightly coloured umbrellas in the café corner and the lively music from local entertainers to the laughter and busy conversation of hundreds of people chatting together as they meet and greet friends and neighbours. It has been said that people talk 10 times more at a farmers’ market than they do at a grocery store. We believe in community interaction and to that end we partner as often as we can with groups such as FRANAS to put on National Aboriginal Day, the Maple Ridge Museum presenting this year the Birthday Bash for Maple Ridge’s 140th celebrations and GETIfest, to name just a few. We participate in Earth Day, Canada Day and our True North Fraser farmers provide the food for Golden Harvest, a Taste of Maple Ridge. Thank you, again.

What I love about Maple Ridge, as someone who likes to bike, is its potential to be a great place for cycling and exploring for everyone, both around and outside of town, which to me, is the best way to feel connected to where I live. You see so many places and smiles on people's faces that you never get to experience from the isolation of your comfortable car.

Favorite Parks • Golden Ears Provincial Park As one of the largest parks in the province, Golden Ears park is prized for its recreational opportunities so it's no wonder the precious expanse figures in the A-list three times - as a favourite hidden gem, park and horse trail. The park covers 62,540 hectares and its extensive system of trails provide an excellent opportunity for hiking and horseback riding. Alouette Lake is a popular spot for swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing, canoeing, boating and fishing. The park also has three large campgrounds, hemmed in by vegetation that is typical of the coastal western Hemlock forest of B.C. The more adventurous can explore the park's extremely rugged mountainous backcountry. • Cliff Falls Park The Cliff Falls area of Kanaka Creek in Maple Ridge offers an easy set of hiking trails, from the picnic area near the waterfalls to the Bell-Irving Hatchery. The park is a great location for families to spend a day in the outdoors during the summer.

But although you can hear shades of those artists in her voice, she has a style all her own, chops, spirit and soul to spare, and a unique sound she hopes will set her apart from the pack when she releases her first recordings in early 2014. Ray Gibson Ray Gibson is social media’s favourite independent Canadian country girl. With over 20 thousand followers on both Instagram and Twitter, and over 600,000 views on Youtube, you could say the online world has all eyes on her. In 2013, she even caught the attention of Country superstar Carrie Underwood. Since then she's made many friends in the country music industry such as Chase Rice, Shay Mooney, Chuck Wicks, Brett Eldredge, Aaron Pritchet, as well as budding country star, Chris Lane. Gibson has performed over 50 shows in B.C. during the last couple of years, including a recent after-party in Kamloops for country stars FloridaGeorgia Line. Madeline Merlo When Madeline Merlo signed to RGK Management and Open Road Recordings in February 2013, it was a dream come true for the 20-yearold country singer-songwriter from Maple Ridge. “My father was a musician and I think it’s in my DNA to be an artist,” Merlo says. “I remember always knowing that was what I wanted to do. It’s always been music for me.” Merlo’s first single, Sinking Like A Stone, hit iTunes in February and skyrocketed when 93.7 JRfm Vancouver selected the song to be featured in their weeknight New Country Challenge. The song received a massive response, winning five consecutive nights – and was promptly added to rotation. Her self-titled EP is currently the No. 1 Canadian country album on iTunes. Merlo has always had an eclectic taste in music, but her sound and style are grounded in the music she grew up on, the classic country of artists like Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline, R&B greats Etta James and Billy Holiday and modern superstars such

However, for the past three years, Zimbaro's primary focus has been singing and songwriting. Her past competitions and performances are too numerous to mention, but notable highlights: the Merritt Mountain Music Festivals (three years - opening up for Johnny Reid, The Road Hammers & Aaron Lines), Downtown Walk of Stars in Merritt, the Big Valley Jamboree in Alberta, opening for Chilliwack and The Headpins, going on tour as the opening act for Jason McCoy's Christmas tour in 2009, as well as singing at the BCCMA Awards Showcase and the CCMA Awards Red Carpet Gala After Party. In 2010, Zimbaro was involved with Simon Cowell's hit television show, The X Factor U.K. She made it into the Top 16 girls and had an amazing time. Zimbaro is currently working with her new pop band, PRTY H3RO. In April 2013, the band signed to Sony Music. Their debut single "Life of the PRTY" is available on iTunes.

Ward and Wes Mack. Her shows are energetic, while many describe her vocals as so powerful as to deliver goosebumps. Gibson already showed signs of her musical talent when she played songs by ear on the piano at the age of 3. When she picked up the guitar at age 15, the same thing happened. After mastering guitar, the ukelele, banjo and mandolin were to follow. But for Ray, it's her vocals that shine. Gibson is currently working on new material with Nashville, L.A. and Vancouver writers/producers for an upcoming EP set for release in 2014/2015. Tavish Crowe, a fellow Canadian musician who co-wrote the hit song "Call Me Maybe," by Carly Rae Jepsen, has written and produced five contenders for the EP. Natasha Zimbaro Natasha Zimbaro's passion started early on, when she was two, with a strong love for dance. Over her 13 years of dance training, she studied Cechetti Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Irish, Tap and she was also an assistant Tap teacher to younger children for three years. Her dance training then led her to her theatre journey and she now has numerous

themes for the mosaics, along with images from the archives. Like mosaics from ancient cultures created from coloured stones, the sidewalk decorations are made from durable ceramic tiles.
Don Brayford, a former municipal manager of electro-mechanical operations, originally designed and built the aluminum horse for close to $60,000, but left no wiring diagrams behind. It was constructed from recycled materials with a Commodore 64' operating system, and originally featured a clock that chimed on the hour accompanied with the rearing of The Beast. Brayford envisioned that horse clock would represent local natural beauty and wrote a story called “The Legend of the Beast.” The Beast fell motionless in 2004 – after the Commodore 64 computer which controlled it crashed for good. The district then hired Ray Saunders, who built Gastown's famous steam clock, to fix it, costing the District of Maple Ridge more than $45,000.
The second one is a tribute to the community building efforts of pioneer Thomas Haney, featuring Haney House, a paddle wheeler on the waterfront, and two buildings that remain from the early days of Port Haney.
The images and colours are symbolic, reminding us of our social history. While the clock and its operating system has been modernized, The Beast no longer rears up. The four mosaic street tiles in downtown Maple Ridge were voted for as well. The Maple Ridge Museum cooperated with the municipal engineering department by providing historically important

All four of the new mosaics have the same border decorations, with maple leaves symbolizing the city's name. The green trees and mountain outlines represent important features of our geography, with the braided blue and white rope design standing for the Fraser River.
The third theme, on Lougheed Highway, is the contribution of women’s groups to community life. The Women’s Institute made sure it had a well baby’s clinic, a public library and many other socially important activities.

The school sports teams, the annual soap-box derby and the 4H agricultural club are all represented. The metal leaves along Dewdney Trunk Road in west Maple Ridge topped the list as well.
