According to the PGA of BC, Storey Creek is the number one rated course on Vancouver Island, hole #12 is one of the top nine holes province-wide, and the Vancouver Sun “Best of B.C.” golf panel rated it the third best public or resort course in the province last year, behind only Predator Ridge in Vernon and Big Sky in Pemberton.

Oh, and this year it took top spot in the PGA of BC rankings of public courses provincewide, as well, going up to number five overall (even when you include the fancy private ones).

They have also received a 4.5 (out of five, obviously) rating from Golf Digest in the past, and they’re the premier golf reference globally, which makes Storey Creek one of the “Best Places to Play” in North America, by those lofty standards.

I played Storey Creek for the first time at this year’s Campbell River Hospital Foundation golf tournament, and, as such, I wasn’t as focused on the quality of the course as I was on all the fun I was having supporting the regional health system, but upon second play a few weeks later, I was blown away.

We approached the first tee, and chose our clubs in order to hopefully not disturb the dozen or so deer lounging lazily in the fairway between about 100 and 200 yards ahead, a goal which thankfully we all succeeded in doing (that being NOT disturbing them, in case that wasn’t clear).

Making our way around the course, I noticed a few things very quickly.

2. It’s also very narrow, and you’ll get in trouble if you’re not focusing on accuracy and instead, say, just crush the ball as far as you can on every tee box.

3. There’s no such thing as a straight putt here.

So with those things in mind, I’ll give you my top three tips for playing this gem of a course (I think you’ll see they reflect those initial impressions).

1. Take your time. Expect the round to take a bit longer than your average trek around 18 holes. Not only is it super nice, so you should enjoy it for as long as possible, but it’s also likely fairly busy, so there will probably be some waiting involved

2. This will require you to stay focused if you’re going to score well. It’s hard to get into a rhythm when there’s periodic waiting, so just focus on one shot at a time, making the right decision (play for position) and concentrate on making solid contact. You get in trouble in a hurry out there if you lose your focus or spray the ball off line.

3. Your putt breaks more than that. Every time you line up a putt, err on the high side of the break, because if there’s even a question in your mind about how high to aim, you’re not aiming high enough.
