Northern Gateway project come to Burns Lake for discussion

Low turn out to community engagement session Staff reporter

Enbridge brought its Northern Gateway Pipeline project team to Burns Lake Oct. 1 to fulfill a commitment of discussing with community members what they are doing to build a safe pipeline.

The team assembled a display room of eight different stations at the Tweedsmuir Park Rod and Gun Club with each representing a draft working plan formed to spark an engagement with Aboriginal groups and stakeholders. Unfortunately, they booked the evening on the same night as the Valdy and Nadina Mackie Jackson concert and most people had other plans.

"We heard [people were busy] several times before tonight's session," said Donny van Dyk, Manager of Coastal Aboriginal and Community Relations with Northern Gateway Project. "Myself and some of my colleagues from the Northern Gateway team, we actually canvassed local coffee shops, the mall as well as knocked on some doors to personally invite folks here in Burns Lake out to the session

Those music lovers missed a presentation on Northern Gateway Project conditions and plans relevant and irrelevant to this community as well as a chance to voice their opinion on how Enbridge is going to build the pipeline in a safe way. The eight stations at the session represented a commitment

by Northern Gateway to discuss with affected Aboriginal groups and stakeholders the phase one engagement plans of the project that are required by the National

Energy Board to be submitted.

"Each station represents a draft working plan in which our experts are sharing information with community members and then community members have the opportunity to provide feedback and input," said van Dyk. "That feedback and input will then be included in our draft planning process and ultimately lead to a better plan that we put before the National Energy Board for each one of the separate sets of conditions."

pipeline environmental effects monitoring program, the marine environmental effects monitoring program, the marine mammal protection plan, the construction marine mammal protection plan, the traditional land use investigation plan, the construction environmental protection and management plan, the wetlands functional assessment plan and the socio-economic effects monitoring plan.

He said the group has mostly completed their tour through communities in NorthWestern B.C. as part of their phase one discussion, but if anyone who missed the chance of catching them wants more information or a say on the project they can look them up on their website.

"Some of our draft plans are on gatewayfacts.ca at the moment," said van Dyk. "There are links there regarding the consultation process that is taking place and the engagement roadmap."

Help for mill workers come from Steelworkers union and Overwaitea Returning or eligible to return workers receive gift cards STAFF REPORTER Employees of the Babine Forest Products sawmill who are either returning or who are eligible to return to work at the rebuilt mill recently received a welcome back present.

Bob Matters, Wood Council Chair for United Steelworkers Union, said the union saved some money apart from the funds they provided the Burns Lake effort to assist affected workers of the 2012 mill fire to create their own supports for emKIM PIPER PHOTO ployees. He said these eligible workers were each Overwaitea Foods manager in Burns Lake, Paul Eckersley holds a sample of the gift cards given given a $625 gift card for Overwaitea Foods.

"We approached Overwaitea [Foods] and Over- out to Babine Forest Products workers. Overwaitea Foods donated $10,000 to the program. waitea also kicked in a significant amount of money," said Matters. "It's always a bit of a dilemma [to] how you give money away. People have different needs, but we thought everybody has to eat no matter what their other needs are so we approached Overwaitea and Overwaitea was kind enough to throw in a significant amount of money. We were able to purchase gift cards at Overwaitea and it worked out to $625 [for each worker]."

Matters said roughly 125 gift cards were given out to the former employees who either returned to work or were eligible to return as a way to reward these workers for their allegiance to the mill. He said the gift cards have now all been distributed and no funds were given in this campaign to workers at the rebuilt mill who did not work at the former sawmill or to any former employees who left after the deadly blaze almost three years ago.

"Some people have moved on and decided not to go back," he said. "Right or wrong I made the decision that those people who come back to work and who support the company [and] the fellow workers in the community [to] share the money."

Matters said the welcome back present was funded by contributions from everyday British Columbians along with donations by Overwaitea Foods and the Steelworkers Union. He said the idea to save some funds for distribution to former employees returning or eligible to return to work had been a union plan since the Burns Lake fund-distribution program ended over a year ago. Overwaitea Foods contribution to the gift card program was in the amount of $10,000.

A light bulb moment

Oil a slippery slope for cities

The power went out last week for nine hours and at first it was a drag.

“I can’t pick up milk and bread now,” I said to my 14-year-old son as we were driving home from his basketball game in Kelowna and noticed West Kelowna - where we live - was curiously in the dark.

“My download won’t work,” Sam said, more concerned about getting a video game on his computer than not having cereal or sandwiches the next day.

When we arrived home at 7:45 p.m. the electricity had been out for over an hour and the activity on the streets was busier than usual.

“It’s an apocalypse!” one little boy yelled, running down the road with his big sister happily chasing after him.

With all the houses unlit, many people were walking around with flashlights enjoying the clear sky and twinkling stars.

My husband was away fishing, but my 11-year-old daughter Daisy was at her friend’s house in Peachland. When I arrived to pick her up, the neighborhood there was alive as well with families outside in the gorgeous night.

“I had to take a poop in the dark,” Daisy announced excitedly when she got in the truck.

“Luckily Niya and Carol had candles so it was less scary.”

When she entered our house she could see that we had them too and became immediately concerned.

“This is dangerous,” she observed, looking at all the tea lights her brother and I had flickering.

“No it’s not,” Sam said. “It looks cool in here.”

It was 8:30 p.m. by then and I was feeling incredibly tired. I suggested a little snack and an early bedtime, but the kids didn’t go for it.

“Let’s play charades,” Sam said.

“Yeah!” Daisy agreed. As exhausted as I felt, there was no way I was going to turn down the opportunity for some old school fun.

At first we played the game the way I did as a kid - just trying to act out movie, TV, book or song titles as we thought of them. But after my son couldn’t figure out how to act out the TV show “Orange is the New Black” and my daughter got stumped on the song “All About that Bass” I decided to grab the board game Guesstures from downstairs to help us out.

Part of it was missing, but we still had the cards labeled easy or hard. Each contained two words. We decided to take turns trying to act out as many cards as we could in two-minute increments and whoever got through the most cards won.

With all the crazy theatrics I can’t remember the last time I laughed so long or so hard.

None of us had a clue who won the game, but after an hour of hysterical fun I’d have to say we all did.

“I’m glad the electricity went out,” Daisy said just before going to sleep. “We should have a no-power-hour every night and live like you did in the olden days.”

She obviously thinks I’m more ancient than I am. But my brother and I did play a lot more board games when we were younger and I regret not doing more of that with Sam and Daisy.

“That’s a brilliant idea,” I said, anxious to connect with them over some old fashioned fun.

“Next time can we play Monopoly?” my daughter asked. “I’m in the mood to spend money.”

Excellent, because I’m in the mood not to spend any.

Last Week’s Question:

Every year when B.C.’s municipal politicians get together to preach to the provincial cabinet, there comes a point in the maze of resolutions where things go sideways.

Last year it was a misinformed, impossible demand to ban all traces of genetic engineering.

Before that they thumbed their mobile phones and denounced wireless power meters. Both votes passed by narrow margins in a half-empty chamber, with many delegates focused on the serious community issues they are elected to address.

This year it was a charge led by Burnaby to denounce the proposed Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion. And this time it was defeated.

Credit for this sudden attack of common sense goes largely to North Cowichan Coun. Al Siebring. Here’s part of his address to the recent Union of B.C. Mu-

nicipalities convention in Whistler: “Ladies and gentlemen, we are elected to handle things like roads and water and sewer and land use, police, fire, garbage. We’re not here to talk about social policy, child poverty or heaven forbid, pipelines.

“Those kinds of things dilute our credibility as an organization. We’re becoming a social policy activist group rather than a group of municipal politicians.

“Half of this resolutions book is stuff that’s outside of our purview…. If you want to do social policy, get your butt elected to the provincial legislature.”

Burnaby, New Westminster, Victoria and Vancouver were undeterred. In tax-rich urban centres one can make a living at local politics. And grandstanding works.

Burnaby Coun. Nick Volkow rattled off a jumbled history of refineries in his region, noting that the sole surviving Chevron plant is bringing in crude by trucks and trains because the 60-yearold pipeline is over-subscribed. He didn’t explain how stopping a pipeline upgrade would keep it open, or improve oil safety.

Volkow repeated the protester myth that a new pipeline would introduce diluted bitumen to the coast. Trans Mountain started shipping dilbit in the late 1980s.

Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar and others from along the Interior pipeline route pointed out another flaw. If southern cities want to wander outside their mandate to make this gesture, why target only this pipeline and ignore rail lines and highways that cross the same rivers and streams?

Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan boasted that after his first court challenge to the National Energy Board was tossed out, his high-priced eco-lawyer found a constitutional angle. Cha-ching!

Meanwhile, professional protesters bike-lock their necks to the fence at Burnaby’s Westridge oil terminal, and a radical Simon Fraser University professor revives his Occupy Vancouver team to step up the ground war if courts falter.

The comedy of all this was illustrated by Coun. Robin Cherbo from Nelson, who assured delegates he uses synthetic oil in his vehicle. Is that derived from organic sunflowers? And what significance does that gesture have compared with the gasoline and jet fuel that carried 1,200 delegates to Whistler?

Cherbo assumes that Ottawa can simply direct Alberta’s oil industry to start refining all the heavy oil there. Half a century into this industrial mega-project, this stuff should just be banned from pipelines. Peace, man.

This is why election-time posturing by local politicians is a slippery slope. Not only do they lack authority, they and their staff lack the required expertise and information.

The Trans Mountain pipeline starts in Alberta and branches into the U.S. It is by definition federal jurisdiction. NEB hearings on its expansion continue, with expert input, especially on shipping risks, from the B.C. government, Green MLA Andrew Weaver and others.

Municipal politicians should pipe down and defend their own performance.

Lakes District Fall Fair Association plan further improvements

The Lakes District Fall Fair Association (LDFFA) has been hard at work over the past few years improving the Eagle Creek recreation grounds and they're not finished yet.

Joan McFee, a director of the LDFFA, said over $100,000 was spent on capital projects at the grounds last year and they are attempting to put a further $52,000 into the area next spring. She said the volunteer-run association achieved this mark by raising a substantial amount of money on their own as well as through numerous successful grant applications including over $72,000 from the Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund (NKDF).

"We're really happy to receive the funds because it's an improvement not only for the fall fair, but also for the Eagle Creek recreation grounds," said McFee, noting the area is used for many different events throughout the year other than the fall fair.

"It would be beneficial to all user groups."

McFee said the newest project the association is attempting to complete is major improvements to the parking area.

They have already received approval from NKDF for a $23,995 grant towards the upgrade and are waiting to hear if their application to Farm Credit Canada AgriSpirit for funding is approved before moving ahead with the project next spring.

She said the upper area of the parking lot at the fairgrounds is quite rough and if they have a wet year at the fair cars tend to get stuck making the parking area unusable. To fix this problem the group wants to put down gravel.

This work would come on the heels of a large project involving improvements to various areas of the Eagle Creek recreation grounds in 2013. During that year the LDFFA spent $107,588 on the site including around $17,000 of their own money.

This total amount breaks down roughly into over $17,000 from federal funding through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, about $48,000 from NKDF, close to $8000 through the Horn Levy Fund that is administered through the B.C. Cattlemen's Association, around $2000 by Area B and E of the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, over $1500 through the Tweedsmuir Cavaliers Saddle Club along with the $17,000 the LDFFA provided through profits realized at their fair vending booths.

Over $100,000 has been spent on capital projects at the Eagle Creek fair grounds last year from numerous grants. grades to the campground site beyond the rodeo grandstands to enlarge the area, gravel the grounds and remove any big rocks to make the campground more accessible to recreational vehicles and livestock trailers. A second improvement involved replacing the panels and gate of the arena where the sheep and cattle are held to make the facility more functional and safer for the animals.

"Another part of those panels and gate's part of the project [is] there is a new building up there," said McFee. "Inside that building was where the 4-H events [or] projects were being held and so there was panels or pens put into that building so that the 4-H animals would be safe."

A fourth improvement to the grounds in 2013 included the installation of three sets of bleachers with side rails and back rails making the area safer for spectators.

Another betterment to the grounds was a $10,000 hydro upgrade to accommodate the increased amount of livestock that is brought to the fair.

A water extension to service the larger camping area and the heavy horse barn was also completed and a golf cart was purchased to make it easier for volunteers and people with disabilities to get around the grounds.

"These were all completed for the 2013 fair, so we were very busy last year because all these projects we started in the spring of 2013 and they were finished for our fair [and] just barely finished," she said. "It was all needed because of the growth of the fair."

McFee said the LDFFA has been fortunate through the years not only from receiving these grants for capital projects,

but also by the support from the business community in Burns Lake. She said this includes $17,500 the Bulkley Valley Credit Union donated to the fair in 2011 to renovate their show rings for pure bred cattle as well as install security gates behind the cattle barn stalls.

"The fair has been growing and we've been getting more livestock every year coming from out of the area," said McFee, noting the fair played host to the Hereford Mark of Excellence Show in 2014.

"We've just learned that we were asked for 2015 to host the Gold Angus Show.

What that means is it will bring more angus cattle into the fair for exhibition and because of that we now have to look further [into grounds improvements].

We need to expand our camping area again, so that these livestock people…can camp closer to their cattle."

I delivered a baby or two in my time as a taxi driver

Here I am starting our another week. What lovely weather we have had so far this fall. Cold nights and nice warm days. The rain showers are so welcome to a dry earth.

Great music Last week we were treated to a wonderful visit with the Decker Lake Mennonite church choir. They are all so very welcome.

Then on Sunday last we were treated to a hymn sing with the Grassy Plains church choir. This was enjoyed by us all at the Tweedsmuir House. All these old hymns bring back old-time memories of our growing up years.

Every Sunday evening before going to bed we would have a hymn sing along. The hired man would come over and dad would have a bible reading. Some times friends would drop in and join us. These are times I will never forget.

These are what we used to call the horse and buggy days.

Sad news This has been a very sad month for me with the loss of two of my very good old-time friends. Walter (Wally) Bridal. Wally and I were in the taxi business together for many years.

He was a nice guy to work with. When Wally took over the school bus run I drove a few times to spell him off. Then the loss of another good friend John Gelz. Both these men were very important to the Village of Burns Lake. I am going back a long time now when the Kemano tunnel was going in and when it was finished all the workmen were moving

out. They were brought by barge to east Tahtsa and were picked up by taxi to Burns Lake. Every car in town was put to work and good money but a long and dangerous road. This was winter time and lots of heavy snow and poorly plowed. I worked under Franky Stewart as he had the contract. I think Wally was under Franky too. If I remember there were nine cabs going.

It was a long lonesome trip. I was glad when it was over. Franky was a good guy to work for and was very good to me.

Baby delivery Something in our paper that really will wake folks up and I hope it does. I will quote it again if you missed it.

Here goes. “Perils of being pregnant in Burns Lake.” I just wonder how many children were born here in town. Our four were born here and made it fine. The highway both east and west of Burns Lake is

getting heavier every year and the heavier the more dangerous it’s going to be. Then there is the expense as well. My granddaughter Marlee Wilson got caught up in this just ask her, it was not only expensive but very inconvenient. She had to stay in a motel to wait until the babies were born. They were also twins.

I just ask this question, why. Burns Lake and the Lakes District covers a big area. Yes we deserve better treatment remember this. It’s the wheel that squeaks that gets the grease. I do hope I have not said too much but I am concerned about our future.

In the mid 40s we decided to get into the taxi business. One of the best things I ever did and it lasted for almost 20 years. During those years I had many emergency trips mostly from the Southside. Some were bush and mill and some just farm accidents and many pregnant

mothers. Doctor Holmes said I should take a first aid course on delivering babies. Only twice I got caught. In those days there were four trips a day so I used to get special if they were emergency calls. This call came in the early morning and was at Grassy Plains so I got the location. It was a little cabin in a field. No road just a trail. The young lady had just started to give birth and also she was alone. The baby girl came fine so I wrapped her in a towel and the mother dressed and we made the ferry and to the hospital.

All went very well.

This wee baby has now grown up and is a mother herself and no doubt a grandmother too. She very often calls in and we have the most wonderful visits and talks.

She is a very good friend and whenever we meet we have a big hug.

One of my worst trips was on the Southside and on the Keefe Land-

ing Road. It was winter time and icy roads as well as heavy snow.

This man was stuck and was getting his chains on. The jack slipped out and the vehicle came down on him. He was alone as well. Someone came along with a team of horses and they had the car off by the time I got there. He was hurt very badly, his head and his shoulder mostly. So we got him in my car and made the ferry and the hospital. This was another life that Dr. Holmes save, one of many. I talked with the guy after he came out of the hospital. He had given up hope and if there ever was a miracle this was one.

Dinner at Takysie On Tuesday last a number of the Tweedsmuir House went over on the ferry to enjoy an evening dinner at Takysie Lake Resort.

It was great. Good food and good service. The bus trip was beautiful with the trees all chang-

ing color.

How well I remember our first trip on the Southside. It was October 1941 with two wagons and five head of horses, what a trip this was. We had planned to make our new home at the Henson place at east Ootsa Lake east end.

The deal went sour so we had to come all the way back and found a new home at Francois Lake. The best move we had ever made. The Lakes District has been good to us.

I have just read Paul Jean’s letter in the last paper. “Village should help out local business owner.” When I saw my name in there I didn’t think I was popular.

Thought of day There is only one door handle of your heart, only one bolt. They are on the inside, your side.

You must listen to the angel throw open the lock and open up that door.

Take care and always remember God loves you and so do I.

Legal aid gets rare boost for cases

Tom Fletcher The B.C. government has added to its pared-down legal aid budget to finance the hiring of a second staff lawyer to handle urgent family law cases, and to expand legal advice by phone for other family disputes around the province.

Attorney General Suzanne Anton announced Tuesday the expansion of a pilot program that started with a staff lawyer in Vancouver dedicated to legal aid clients with family law disputes. The second family court "duty counsel" will be based at the Victoria courthouse.

The program is funded with an extra $2 million a year for three years, bringing this year's Legal Services Society budget to $74.5 million. This allows double the time for eligible clients to receive legal advice by phone.

Legal Services Society board chair Tom Christensen said the phone service will now be able to offer eligible clients up to six hours with the same lawyer, to get advice on issues such as child support and parenting arrangements so they can represent themselves in family court.

"There are always going to be cases where the situation is so dire that we need to appoint a lawyer to assist somebody in court," Christensen said. "And with family services, that's generally where violence is threatened, or where somebody faces a serious chance of their interaction with their children being cut off, like when one parent's going to leave the province with them, and the other parent needs to stop that."

Anton said there are three more pilot projects to come. These are an expanded model for legal aid staff lawyers in criminal cases, a parents' legal centre for child protection cases and a family mediation referral program.

The financing move comes as the Trial Lawyers' Association of B.C. resumes its intermittent strike against legal aid work to protest the lack of funding. Lawyers are refusing legal aid for the first week of each month in a protest that began in July.

The association notes that 80 per cent of people in family court are not represented by a lawyer, and that the rate paid to legal aid lawyers hasn't changed since the B.C. government cut the Legal Service Society budget by about 40 per cent between 2001 and 2005.

Anton said the overall speed of the court system is improving, and the newly expanded program is designed to settle more cases out of court.

"On a family matter in particular, court is not necessarily the final destination, not necessarily the best destination," Anton said. "This is the emphasis of the new Family Law Act. We would rather parties settled the matter between themselves with the help of a mediator, with the help of our family justice mediation services, with the help of the Justice Access Centres."

The Trial Lawyers' Association points to the extension of provincial sales tax to legal bills in the 1990s, to fund legal aid. They say only half of that tax revenue is used for its original purpose.

environmental effects monitoring program is an initiative by Northern Gateway to meet conditions 27 to 29 and 30 to 32.

The program's purpose is to describe the current status of freshwater and terrestrial biota and their habitat. It will also identify any potential change in species diversity, abundance, distribution and habitat quality in the project's effects assessment area (PEAA) due to direct effects of routine project activities or potential oil spills.

The pipeline environmental effects monitoring program will guide the collection of a set of background information that will be science-based, statistically defensible and built on open and transparent communication with Aboriginal groups and stakeholders.

The marine environmental effects monitoring program meets conditions 36 and 37, as it describes the current status of marine biota and their habitat as well as measuring any potential change in species diversity, abundance, distribution and habitat quality in the PEAA, confined channel assessment area (CCAA) and open water area (OWA) due to direct effects of routine project activities or potential oil spills.

The marine mammal protection plan is being developed in order to meet condition 50. Separate plans will also be formed to describe protection of marine mammals during the construction phase and during operations of the terminal. The purpose of the plans is to outline measures that Northern Gateway will implement in the PEAA, CCAA and OWA to manage and monitor project-related environmental effects on marine mammals associated with underwater noise, blasting and other marine mammal-vessel interactions.

The purpose of the construction marine mammal protection plan is to meet condition 51and will be completed at least six months prior to commencing in-water construction for the Kitimat Terminal. A separate plan to protect marine mammals during the operations phase of the terminal is also being developed.

The plan would outline measures that Northern Gateway will implement in the project development area (PDA) and the PEAA in order to manage and monitor construction related environmental effects on marine mammals associated with underwater noise, blasting and other potential marine mammal-vessel interactions. It

will also implement a variety of industry best practices and mitigation measures to minimize impacts while taking into account seasonal marine mammal and fish diversity, abundance and activity.

The traditional land use investigation plan satisfies conditions 53 to 56 by setting out Northern Gateway's methodology in applying Aboriginal traditional knowledge to the detailed routing and final design of the project. Northern Gateway will use this information that would be obtained through joint review panel hearings, formal Aboriginal traditional knowledge studies, ongoing discussions with potentially affected Aboriginal groups and from working with Aboriginal equity partners.

The construction environmental protection and management plan meets National Energy Board conditions 63 to 66 and provides guidance to Northern Gateway, so that the Project is constructed according to applicable company policies, procedures, commitments and regulatory requirements. It will reflect the results of all environmental assessment work and engagement conducted on the project and will describe the environmental management approach and protection measures that will be implemented during construction of the pipelines and associated facilities.

It is estimated the project may affect almost 500 hectares of wetlands, so in order to meet conditions 67 to 70 Northern Gateway will assess and mitigate any adverse environmental effect of the project on the function of affected wetlands.

The wetlands functional assessment plan will be completed at least six months prior to commencing construction following engagement with Aboriginal groups and stakeholders and will include goals, project wetland interactions, compensation ratios, implementation and monitoring.

The socio-economic effects monitoring plan meets condition 78 and will be used to monitor potentially adverse effects on people, services and infrastructure in Aboriginal and other communities in the project area. The plan will form part of a larger socio-economic management plan that would provide a process to ensure economic and social effects of Northern Gateway are properly addressed and actively managed.

Dozens of local residents joined politicians and funding partners last Saturday (Oct. 4) to officially open Burns Lake’s newest recreation facility.

Completed earlier this spring and in operation since May 31, the Lakeside Multiplex features a squash/racket ball court, climbing wall, fitness center, two multi-purpose rooms with views of the arena, an office, and various other amenities. The $3-million facility was constructed with grant funding from a host of agencies and government organizations, with the largest contribution ($2.4 million) coming from the Province of BC. In opening the multiplex, Mayor Luke Strimbold pointed out that it’s one of the largest investments in recreation made by the municipality in several years. He paid tribute to the facility’s funding partners and several village staff members for making the community’s dream a reality.

“Two staff who worked night and day, spent a lot of time here at the multiplex making sure it was ready for a grand opening, and the best facility it could be, were Sheryl Worthing and Rick Martin.

If you drove by here at nine or 10 o’clock at night, probably both their vehicles would have been here,” he noted, adding that Recreation Director Dooseon Jung also played an integral role in planning Saturday’s event.

John Rustad, MLA for Nechako Lakes and provincial minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, was also on hand for the opening. Rustad, who helped secure provincial funding for the multiplex and several other key projects in wake of the deadly 2012 explosion and fire at Babine Forest Products’ sawmill, said the facility will play an important role in the community for years to come.

“Recreational is as much an integral part of the infrastructure of our communities as are roads, water, sewer, all those things,” he stressed. “It’s as important because it brings us together as a community, but it also helps us attract those people to our community – doctors, lawyers, educators – who we need here to make our community strong and vibrant.”

Representatives from several other funding partners were also on hand to celebrate the multiplex’s opening.

Wendy Benyk, director for the Northern Development Initiative Trust, presented Mayor Strimbold with a plaque commemorating that organization’s contribution of $60,000 to the multiplex. Shelley Wall, representing the Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society (which

After a ribbon-cutting ceremony that featured provincial and civic leaders as well as several children chosen from the audience, those present were treated to cake and other snacks. Children also had the opportunity to

use the facility’s climbing wall – some of them for the first time.

The Lakeside Multiplex was built by Venture Pacific Construction Management Ltd. The facility was scheduled for completion by the end of January 2014, but several factors prevented the contractor from meeting that deadline.

“Recreational is as much an integral part of the infrastructure of our communities as are roads, water, sewer, all those things,” he stressed. “It’s as important because it brings us together as a community, but it also helps us attract those people to our community – doctors, lawyers, educators – who we need here to make our community strong and vibrant.”

Representatives from several other funding partners were also on hand to celebrate the multiplex’s opening.

Wendy Benyk, director for the Northern Development Initiative Trust, presented Mayor Strimbold with a plaque commemorating that organization’s contribution of $60,000 to the multiplex. Shelley Wall, representing the Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society (which

After a ribbon-cutting ceremony that featured provincial and civic leaders as well as several children chosen from the audience, those present were treated to cake and other snacks. Children also had the opportunity to

use the facility’s climbing wall – some of them for the first time.

The Lakeside Multiplex was built by Venture Pacific Construction Management Ltd. The facility was scheduled for completion by the end of January 2014, but several factors prevented the contractor from meeting that deadline.

On Oct. 4 Chereen Patrick hosted a Sisters in Spirit rally in Burns Lake to raise awareness about the plight of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and to bring families together who have been affected by these incidents to support each other. Patrick, a community health representative for the Burns Lake Band, knows the pain of losing someone firsthand to the Highway of Tears. Her cousin, 16-year-old Ramona Wilson, disappeared in 1994 from her hometown of Smithers. She was found dead 10 months later and her killer has yet to be brought to justice for the crime.

Only a few short months after Heartbleed there seems to be another major security threat looming on the horizon. Called “Shellshock” or the “Bash Bug” after the Bash shell that it exploits, this new security flaw can allow an unauthorized user to run deep level shell commands on vulnerable UNIX, Linux, and certain Mac OS X based systems. It also seems that this exploit has been around for several years, and there’s no telling yet how much damage may have been caused by it. So how does this affect you? From the direct end user standpoint, there isn’t much to worry about. Most Windows systems are unaffected, and most Mac OS X systems have to have the relevant UNIX services enabled, which they do not by default. However indirectly there are all sorts of problems that might arise from this. While your average home user is not running Linux or UNIX, a lot of servers on the Internet are. Unless or until all of those servers are patched, it possible that attackers can use this exploit to gain control of those servers and either exploit them directly by stealing information stored on them, or use them to launch more conventional attacks against Windows & Mac systems by distributing malware, launching DDoS attacks, etc. So far the prevailing sentiment in the security community is “Don’t Panic!”, though Mac users may want to keep an eye out for a possible security patch in the near future.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate or meet the following criteria:

KNOWLEDGE • Completion of Grade 12 (Dogwood CertiƂcate) • Valid B.C. Trades CertiƂcation in Commercial Vehicle Transport or Heavy Duty Mechanic • Propane CertiƂcation and Commercial Vehicle Inspection CertiƂcation • Valid B.C. Driver’s License – Class 5 Full Privileged with an exemplary driving record as demonstrated by a current driver’s abstract EXPERIENCE • Experience gained through Trades QualiƂcation apprenticeship program inclusive of three years industry related experience • Basic welding experience • WHMIS CertiƂcate and familiarity with Work Safe BC (WCB) safety procedures
