he search for missing Cowichan senior Tony Morley has ended with his whereabouts still unknown, police said Monday. “Cowichan Search and Rescue (members) were out yesterday (Oct. 5), with community volunteers, in an organized search to cover a few areas still needing their attention,” North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Cpl. Krista Hobday said of the hunt for Morley, believed lost Sept. 21 on or near Maple Mountain. Sunday’s efforts by police, Cowichan SAR, and tons of volunteers, ended at around 5 p.m. Police, SAR members, and Morley’s family thanked those volunteers for their time and dedication in the search for Morley, 79. “There have been well over 2,000 search hours logged over the 23-square-kilometre search area, and then some,” Hobday said. “Local residents allowed access to their property, (lent) their GPS after conducting their own searches, and shared their local knowledge with Cowichan Search and Rescue. “The family of Mr. Morley has been very helpful to the searchers, letting them know points of interest and Mr. Morley’s likely path.” Volunteers from across the island, plus 65 from the mainland, assisted the intensive dragnet. “Yesterday’s search was very difficult, and the terrain was described as brutal,” search manager Tina Phillips stated. “Different efforts are placed in different areas based on the probability they will be successful in their search, such as thick brush versus roads and trails.” Areas are categorized from reasonable to unlikely during search plans, she explained. “It isn’t that we don’t believe Mr. Morley is on the mountain, we have just exhausted all efforts and resources available to us to locate him,” stated Phillips. “It’s so terribly hard to stop (looking).” Cowichan SAR was scheduled to conduct a debriefing Tuesday evening, and planned to hold its monthly training day, within the next week, on Maple Mountain, Hobday noted. Morley’s daughter, Vanessa Fischer, thanked everyone who helped scour the mountain for her dad. She hoped “if anyone does go hiking in the area, that they keep an eye open for any sign of him.” North Cowichan /Duncan RCMP can be called at 250-748-5522.

he largest, permanent collection of Duncan master-painter E.J. Hughes’ work is getting its own gallery in Whistler’s Audain Art Museum. Opening next fall, the $30-million structure — being built by Michael Audain and wife Yoshiko Karasawa — nestled in trees on Blackcomb Way, will offer 19 Hughes’ works, spanning the 1930s to the 1990s. Those pieces — picked by biographer and Vancouver Art Gallery curator Ian Thom — include 15 from Hughes’ friend, author and collector Jacques Barbeau, plus four from Audain’s collection. “E.J. Hughes would say to me ‘My art really belongs to the people of B.C.’” Barbeau told the News Leader Pictorial Monday. “The inference was clear: maybe there’s a better place for his work than my living room walls. “When we saw the concept of the (60,000-square-foot) Audain Museum, I thought it was the perfect repository for his work.” more on page 8
