the 1960’s musical HAIR, the singers plead, “Give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair, shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen.”

Yes those were the days when we slathered Brylcreem into our ducktails or pompadours, shaped our beehives and teased our afros.

Too often, too much hair was a problem. It was all fun until someone lost a follicle.

As we age we have natural hair loss, some people have naturally thinning hair and others are subject to complete hair loss due

to cancer related chemotherapy. Whatever the reason, premature hair loss can be a very emotional problem.

Rose Adams is the owner of The House of Miss Rose on 56th Avenue in Langley City and she knows the shock and despair that can come with hair loss. “I have been in the hair dressing business for over 57 years and although we still operate a hair salon on the premises, my passion is rebuilding self esteem by fitting wigs and counselling my clients.”

Rose is a cancer survivor herself.

“I had cancer when I was 27 so I know what they are going through. Back then the treatments were radium, not chemotherapy and I can appreciate their fear.”

Rose first found her love for hairdressing when she was seven years old.

“We lived in Manitoba and one day we went to Swan River and I saw these ladies in white coats and white shoes that looked like nurses. They were hairdressers and I told my father then and there I wanted to be a hairdresser. I used to save a nickel of my allowance so I could buy beauty magazines and I started doing my friends’ hair in my beauty salon in the bush behind our house.

“I even made my own tools. I put some tape on a pair of my father’s needle nose pliers and they were the best eyebrow tweezers I have ever used.”

Rose eventually went to the Marvel School of Hair Dressing in Regina.

“I thought I had died and gone to heaven, being able to do what I loved so much.

Eventually, I wanted to teach hairdressing but to get my teaching credentials I had to finish high school so I went back to high school with my children, graduated and was able to teach.”

Rose eventually came to Langley and taught at Gillette’s School and then took over the House of Miss Rose when she turned 65, ten years ago.

Both of Rose’s children are in the hairdressing profession as well. Her son, Sandy Sokolowski, is a well-known wig maker and hair expert for the movie industry in Toronto and her daughter, Starlette Tolver, is currently the President of

the BC Hairdresser’s Association.

Fraser Valley Transportation Cooperative

– a bus when you need it LILIANE FULLER

is leading the parade for innovation in transportation. The first bus sharing co-operative in North America has been established, and will launch on Oct. 15. The Fraser Valley Transportation Co-operative has been incorporated and will bring agencies together who provide seniors and others with bus transportation.

The co-op owns a fleet of buses that are available to be rented by its member agencies with rates that promise to be significantly lower than commercial rates. The benefit to the co-op’s partner agencies is that rather than having to acquire, own and maintain a bus, they will have a choice. Membership will allow the agencies to offer organized rides to patrons without the need of owning a bus; it simply books one of the co-op’s buses on an as needed basis.

Eventually the co-op anticipates owning several sizes and configurations of buses in order to meet a variety of needs.

Management and administration will be provided by STAR (Seniors Transportation: Access and Resources) and fleet management will be provided by MODO, The Car Co-op in Vancouver. Overall supervision

and direction is provided by the Fraser Valley Transportation Cooperative’s board of directors who include Pam Murphy, executive director, Magnolia Gardens, Terry Metcalfe, chairperson, Langley Care Society, and Janice McTaggart, outreach director, Langley Seniors Resource Centre.

McTaggart was one of the lead players in establishing this co-op.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with these other agencies who share the vision of co-operative transportation. I have been talking with seniors in Aldergrove, Fort Langley, Walnut Grove and even Fernridge and they tell me it is difficult to get to places they want to go on public transit,” she said.

“My personal hope is that we can address this issue through the Langley Seniors Centre’s membership in the bus co-op, by providing some sort of shuttle service to central areas. Experience has taught us that group transportation can be a very social experience as well as getting you out and about. Our tagline is ‘Cooperative transportation, connected communities.’”

a bus when you need it establishing the co-op. In 2013, the credit union committed to exploring the use of a co-operative business model in an effort to respond to the growing needs of seniors and their families dealing with the challenges of aging. It partnered with the Langley Seniors Resource Society to investigate the feasibility of a bus co-op to address the issue of the lack of affordable and accessible transportation for Langley’s seniors. It also supported this initiative by providing leadership, advice, technical support, grants and financing.

“This is a creative approach to a growing problem,” says Linda Morris, a senior vice-president at VanCity. “It’s amazing to see the co-operative model in action, bringing people together to create a valuable community asset for seniors in Langley., Since 2007, VanCity has given more than $500,000 in grants to community organizations in the Langley area (including the bus coop).

“We could not have achieved the progress we have made without the support of VanCity,” said McTaggart. “Their belief in the co-op model and their financial support have been most beneficial.”

How the co-op works is this: When a member agency needs one of the buses, it can book one online or with a telephone call. The buses will be located at easy-to-access locations in and around Langley. At this time the co-op cannot offer drivers, but the member’s driver can be trained and oriented by MODO staff. After that, the member’s driver can pick up the bus when scheduled and take it away. It will be totally fueled up, clean, and ready to go.

Once the ride is over the driver drops the bus off at the pick-up location, secures it and walks away. The member agency will receive a monthly invoice based on an hourly rate of $40, for the amount of time it had the use of the buses. Fuel costs will be included in the hourly rate, and there will be no added cost for insurance or other surcharges.

The co-op incorporated with three founding member agencies: The Langley Seniors’ Resource Society, The Langley Care Society (Langley Lodge), and Bria Communities Inc. (Magnolia Gardens).

At the Fraser Valley Transportation Co-operative’s founding annual general meeting, it is hoped to increase the member agencies number to five.

Membership requires the agency to purchase a one-time membership share at $7,500. If at some point the agency chooses to leave the co-op, their share purchase will be refunded. Members do not share in any of the financial risks in the launching or the operation of the co-op.

An agency may apply to become a member by submitting an application to the Fraser Valley Transportation Co-operative. At their sole discretion, the board of directors will review all applications and will accept, refuse or postpone consideration of the applications received. THESE

are just some of the comments from people after having had major colorectal surgery. They are the lucky ones who had their tumours or lesions detected in time.

Many others wait too long. Colorectal cancer — cancer of the colon or rectum — is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada, yet it’s one of the most treatable cancers there is, even in its later

stages.

About 1 in 13 Canadian men is expected to develop colorectal cancer during his lifetime and 1 in 28 will die from it. About 1 in 16 Canadian women is expected to develop colorectal cancer during her lifetime and 1 in 32 will die from it.

Most colorectal cancers develop slowly over several years. Before a cancer develops, a growth of tissue or tumour usually begins as a non-cancerous polyp on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. A tumour is abnormal tissue and can be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer). A polyp is

a benign, non-cancerous tumour. Some polyps can change into cancer, but not all do. The chance of changing into a cancer depends upon the kind of polyp.

Regular colorectal cancer screening or testing is one of the most powerful weapons for preventing colorectal cancer.

Screening is the process of looking for cancer in people who have no symptoms of the disease.

It can take many years (as many as 10 to 15) for a polyp to develop into colorectal cancer. Regular screening can prevent many cases of colorectal cancer altogether by finding and removing certain types of polyps before they have the chance to turn into cancer. Screening can also result in finding colorectal cancer early, when it is highly curable.

risk of colorectal cancer. Ask your doctor which tests are available where you live and which options might be right for you, not all screening involves a colonoscopy.

People who have no identified risk factors (other than age) should begin regular screening at age 50. Those who have a family history or other risk factors for colorectal polyps or cancer (see section “Risk factors for colorectal cancer”) should talk with their doctor about starting screening when they are younger and/or getting screened more frequently.

Here are four things experts say you must know about keeping your colon happy and healthy: 1. Get Screened Most colon cancers begin as polyps, lumps growing on the lining of the colon wall that can develop into cancer. Regular screening after the age of 50 is essential for detecting and removing these polyps before they become cancerous. Six of 10 deaths from colon cancer could be

prevented if everyone age 50 and over got screened routinely. If your test comes back clean, you won’t need another one for 10 years. However, if your test shows abnormalities, you should be screened more often.

2. Colonoscopies Aren’t That Bad During a colonoscopy, a doctor gently inserts a long, flexible tube with a light and camera on the end into your rectum to scope out signs of cancer. The test itself is no big deal. You’re under anesthetic and won’t feel a thing.

Prep is another matter. Before the test you need to clean out your colon by drinking copious amounts of a viletasting liquid, then retiring to the bathroom for the better part of a day.

Some people find the ordeal daunting, but if friends or loved ones resist the idea, encourage them to do it for the people who love and depend on them.

3. Don’t Die of Embarrassment There may be blood in stool, a change

in bowel habits, diarrhea or a change in weight. A month or more of narrowing of the stools, straining, change in stool shape are all symptoms of bowel problems.

Too often, people often ignore these symptoms or are too embarrassed to talk to the doctor about them. Health experts say to “get over it, get to the doctor and drop your pants!” Other than polyps there may be no other symptoms in the early stages of the disease. That’s why it’s so important to have regular check-ups and get screened on a schedule set by you and your doctor.

4. Know the Risks Age is an important risk factor. Colon and rectal cancers most often strike people over the age of 50, but the disease can strike at any age. Getting sick

or injured in a foreign country can be a nightmare. If you don’t have travel insurance or as we learned, the right kind of travel insurance, it’s worse. Last year, when Topher got sick, we were fortunate that his illness didn’t necessitate a trip to the hospital. He was treated in a small Mexican clinic. But when I got sick enough to be hospitalized in Puerto Vallarta it was a completely different story. This year we found out that if you do not have the right kind of travel insurance, you can be out of pocket for a lot of money for at least six months. This is what happened to us.

The region we visited had an outbreak of Dengue fever, so when I became ill with similar symptoms, the doctor, who was already treating three Canadians, initially thought I had contracted the disease as well.

However after I had been on IV antibiotics for a few hours in Dr. Martin’s clinic, I began to feel better and Dengue fever was ruled out. He did want me to remain overnight for observation and if I continued to improve, I could go back to our hotel and resume our vacation. But later in the day, I was struggling to breathe and having chest pains. Dr. Martin feared I was going to have a heart attack so he asked if we had travel insurance. He wanted to send me to an American type hospital in Puerto Vallarta and when we replied that, yes, we had insurance he called for an ambulance and prepared me for the trip.

Much of the ambulance ride was a blur but I do remember thinking, “thank goodness we have travel insurance.” By the time we arrived at Amerimed Hospital in Puerto Vallarta, it was almost midnight. While I was being stabilized, Topher was in the hospital’s finance department making payment arrangements. It came as a shock to learn that our insurance carrier was not one in which the hospital had a partnership agreement. We would need to pay for my care upfront and seek reimbursement once we returned to Canada. …CONTINUED

Before we go out of the country, I lower our credit card limits so when the hospital tried to charge $6,000 on our card, it was declined. A stressful situation was becoming even more so.

“Who can you call and where can you get money right now, Señor?” asked the financial manager. Because it was 1 a.m. in Canada, Topher explained that we had money, and he would make payment arrangements in the morning.

The hospital was upscale and our room resembled a suite in a five star hotel and the care I received was stellar. Early the next morning, test results came back that indicated that I did not have Dengue fever but because of the chest pains and shortness of breath, the doctors felt that I should have a stress test to rule out any cardiac damage. That test came back normal and they concluded that I had an infection that had gotten out of control but now I was improved enough to be released into the care of Dr. Martin in La Peñita.

However before we could leave we needed to settle our bill. It turned out to be almost $10,000. This was American-style medicine and the five page invoice listed every test, every drug, every nurse visit to my room and everything in between. It was all itemized…. in Spanish.

The armed security guards at the front of the hospital indicated that no one could leave without paying their bill. We were lucky, it wasn’t a weekend and we were able to contact our bank and arrange for money from our credit line to be transferred onto our Visa card.

We returned to Canada and I began the process to recover the funds. This was a real eye opener. We use a company that provides low cost travel insurance to retired federal government employees. We should have read the fine print because what we didn’t know was that in the case of trips under

before you leave the country 40 days the only thing this company was required to do was to transfer our initial call to our extended medical carrier for a claim number.

Part of the retired employees’ benefit package includes a $50,000 travel insurance policy. But it isn’t this company who would processes our claim. Our carrier turns them over to another insurance company who specializes in these types of claims. Luckily I have a clerical background, because it took numerous phone calls, a tremendous amount of follow up and six months before we recovered the money.

In our situation we were fortunate that we had funds available to hold us over until we were reimbursed. The experience certainly demonstrated the need to investigate what type of coverage various insurance companies will provide.

Hospitals around the world have different policies so when making travel arrangements it’s a good idea to have your travel agent check in advance the insurance requirements for the location you wish to visit. For example Amerimed Hospital has four locations in Mexico: Puerto Vallarta, Cabos San Lucas, Cancun, and San Jose del Cabo and their website lists the insurance companies with which they have a partnership

agreement.

I reviewed the list and found that RBC, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Allianz Global Assistance, and CanAssistance all have partnership agreements with the hospital. The others listed were either American or Mexican companies.

To find out how these partnership agreements work, I contacted Allianz Global Assistance and this is what they told me.

“Frequently when travelling overseas, healthcare providers will require patients to pay first, then they can file a claim with their health insurance company when they get home. With Allianz travel insurance, we provide a payment guarantee to a healthcare provider so that travellers do not have to pay for their care out of their pocket,” said Daniel Durazo, Director of Communications. Each company listed have similar policies regarding travel insurance.

Health Insurance Association of Canada, 35 per cent of Canadian travellers don’t buy health insurance. A reason for this could be that as people age, travel insurance becomes more important and more expensive. Insurance companies require that if you have a pre-existing condition, it must be under control for at least three months before you can even purchase travel insurance. If you have a pre-existing condition and you fail to disclose it, your coverage could be null and void.

Different insurance companies have different policies and practices, so it’s a good idea to shop around, compare pricing and make sure you speak to a representative to ensure that if you get sick or injured you will be covered in advance.

Prices vary and the lowest price is not necessarily the best factor to consider.

Travelling is a wonderful experience and we decided not to let what happened to us keep us from exploring the world. We will be returning to Mexico and already have our airline tickets and hotel arranged. But this year, we won’t leave home without a travel insurance policy that if necessary, will pay our medical bills upfront.

The golden years aren’t always a smooth ride, but old age doesn’t have to be the end of the road for fun and adventure.

Forget water aerobics, move on over carpet bowling, motorcycles are the way to go — well, at least for the majority of members who belong to the Langley Roadriders.

Senior member Gord Swanson, 75 rarely misses a ride with the Langley Roadriders.

This

‘motley crew’ of recreational bikers, who range in age from early 50 to late 70s, prove that retirement is a chance for seniors to really let loose, hit the open road and allow the wind to flow wild and free through their hair.

Twice a week, members meet in the McDonald’s parking lot at the junction of Fraser Highway and Highway 10 --Sunday’s at 8 a.m. and Tuesdays at 7 p.m. – for no particular reason other than the love of riding and being in good company.

While a love of motorcycles is what brings them together and the safety aspect of being in a group is their mandate, it’s the camaraderie of likeminded individuals that has kept the wheels of this club in motion since 1985, according to George Anderson, past president and long-time member of the organization.

“It’s about giving people an opportunity to do rides with other motorcyclists,” he said of the club comprised of around 50 members who hail from all over the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver areas – one long-term member even comes from as far as the Sunshine Coast.

“Even though it’s based in Langley, you

don’t have to be from Langley to join us on our rides.”

Members of the Langley Road Riders also benefit from plenty of perks, both on the road and off.

“This past weekend, one of the individuals had a flat tire on his bike,” said Anderson. “Normally, would need a tow truck, which can get pretty costly. Fortunately for him, one of our members had a tire plugging kit... the guy was back on the road again in 15 minutes. That’s not something that happens when you’re off riding on your own.”

Most motorcycle dealers also give the club’s members a discount for parts as do many private insurance firms -- the pooled knowledge amongst all of the club’s members is also invaluable.

“We have knowledge amongst each other on how to solve problems and save each other money and stress.

Anderson, who became involved with the club in the late 80s, says the club’s dynamics were much different than they are today.

“In the late 90s’, we had as many female members as male members... that has really disappeared --now there are just two

who ride their own bikes and a couple who ride as passengers. The average age of our members used to also be around 35 or 40 -- today, it’s around 65.”

The Langley retiree and proud owner of a gleaming black metallic Honda Gold Wing, is hoping that the club will attract a more diverse group of riders in the years to come so it can cruise on full speed ahead for many years to come. However, he fears a decline in motorcycle sales may potentially hinder that growth for the club.

“When I Google peak year for sales, that peak year was 2008 according to the North America Motorcycle Report. Ever since sales have been going down. I also think it’s because some people just don’t know that we’re here. Even though we have a website and brochures placed in motorcycle shops, it has been tough to get the word out.”

Every Sunday, the club does a ride that’s anywhere between 300 and 700 km -on Tuesday’s they average around 75 to 90 km. There are also various three and four-day rides that happen throughout the year. …CONTINUED

“We’re one of the few clubs out there that actually ride,” said Anderson, also noting that past trips have included a trek to the Britannia mines and the Sea-to-Sky gondola.

“Anyone can come and ride with us, they don’t have to be a member!”

In addition to the rides, the club holds a monthly meeting on the fourth Thursday of each month. There are also various socials and parties for members and their spouses that are reserved exclusively for members-- a great chance to mingle and mix off the road.

“I can still recall one time back in the 90s when we had 50 bikes going from Langley all the way to Coquitlam. We had police escort all the way to the Port Man Bridge. The Toy Drive is something we really look forward to each year.”

for baby boomers is far different than it was for their parents. Improved health, living longer lives, and having more disposable income has given seniors more options in their golden years. They can keep working or start playing or do anything in between. These five seniors are living proof that the old adage ‘if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life’, is true.

At 60, Kevin Staples traded in his business suit and tie for motorcycle leathers, a Home Depot apron, and a sports jacket. After spending 40 years in the corporate world, Kevin retired and The Salvation Army’s Gateway of Hope were the beneficiaries of 15 suits, 40 dress shirts and over 200 ties. These days Kevin lives his life in jeans and a T shirt. He quit being a banker two years ago and today, instead of doing nothing he travels extensively, works three jobs and is a very happy man.

With a Certified Financial Planners (CFP) Designation, working in the financial world was an option, but he was looking for something different. A motorcycle enthusiast for 20 years he took an advance riders course at Valley Driving School. It was there he met Larry Dyck, the owner of the school who immediately recognized Kevin’s passion for riding. He told him that

if he got his instructor’s license there would be a job waiting for him.

Toying with the idea for about a year, Kevin made the decision to go for it. Using a month long leave on vacation he took the instructor’s course in February. “We were riding up to 8 - 10 hour days; and it seemed like every day it snowed’, he said.

That March, he started working weekends at the school and the rest of the week at the bank. Once he retired from the bank in June 2012, he continued to work at Valley Driving School on the weekends, and still does.

Another departure for him is his job at Home Depot in their lumber department. He works eight hours a day for three days a week selling lumber and other construction materials.

Sometimes the transition from being retired to working a part time job can be a daunting experience for a senior. Some advice Kevin offers is this. “Don’t be afraid to try new things or be the new kid on the block; it’s hard to be 60+ and make mistakes.

Also after 30 years of being the coach to becoming the coachee can be difficult. But if you can get past that, it’s really fun,” he said.

Kevin’s third job fits his gregarious nature to a T. As a marketing associate with Hollis Wealth his job is helping people with financial management. “My favorite part of the job when I was a bank manager was not in Human Resources, or administration, but in helping people attain their financial goals. That was the best part of the job,” he said.

Living life to the fullest, he enjoys his three part-time jobs. “It’s the best of both worlds, I can work when I want and I can travel when I want,” he said.

T o m To m l i n retired as an air traffic controller. He was doing volunteer work and travelling when the company that trains air traffic controllers offered Tom a very lucrative contract. It was too good to turn down so he worked as an instructor part time for four years. This was a way to avoid doing the high pressure job of air traffic control

but keeping his hand in at the same time.

Some retirees who want to work past retirement may fear the dreaded OAS “claw-back.” The federal government imposes a tax on OAS payments. If the net annual income exceeds a certain threshold there is a claw-back. The amount is equal to the whole OAS payments, or 15 per cent of the amount by which the net income exceeds the threshold, whichever is less. Tom was aware of these regulations and took appropriate measures to avoid the results of the claw-back. He purchased investments to offset the claw-back’s effects. Today Tom is fully retired and enjoying travelling the world with his wife Joan.

For some seniors becoming fully retired isn’t something that they can afford. Matthew retired in 2007 but because of a lifetime of low paying jobs and no company pension, all he could rely on were CPP and Old Age. He found there wasn’t enough money to live comfortably and pay the rent. He approached his landlord to ask for a break on the rent by doing odd jobs. When asked if he would like to stop working, Matthew replied,” No, this keeps me in shape, I enjoy doing the odd jobs that keeps my rent low. I’m frugal and I’m saving a bit for when I can’t do this anymore.”

Mufford Crescent - From Country Trail to Four Lane Highway J I M M CG R E G O R

WHEN

Pat Mufford and her husband Merv decided to build their home in 1954, they chose a quiet spot on the south edge of their 100 acre parcel of land on the edge of what was once the Hudson’s Bay Company Farm.

Pat remembers the green, open fields for the herd of dairy cattle. “Our property was next to Merv’s father’s farm, Lloyd Mufford. We lived in their big house while we were building ours. There was no road at that time, just a trail that went down to the Beedle’s place so it was quiet there,” In the early 1960’s the Mufford family negotiated with the municipality and donated a half mile of their farm land to build a road. One of the stipulations was that the road would be called Mufford Crescent. At that time it was a dead end just past the Mufford home and didn’t go through to 206 Street.

“It was quite a process,” recalls Pat. “The negotiations went on for over a year about

the size of the fence posts, the number of strands of barbed wire and who was paying for the spinners. We had large posts and six strands and they wanted to use four inch posts and four strands but we were running dairy cattle in the fields and the fence had to be strong.”

Mufford Crescent “When we first built there, we never even locked our doors. Due to urban pressure and family health issues, it was getting harder to be a farmer then and we had to start to think about moving.�

Pat and Merv sold the property in 1996 and moved off the farm in 1997. Ivan Mufford sold his farm to the north at a later date. “Our old house sat there until they started work on the overpass. It was hard to drive by and see our tidy little place was derelict and such a mess now. “We enjoyed all the families in that area back then. Langley voters go to the polls on Saturday, November 15, they will be selecting their municipal leaders for four-year terms. This is the first time in British Columbia history that local government representatives will be elected for the longer term.

Langley Township’s Chief Election Officer Bob Wilson has experienced the various changes to civic elections, from when elections for half the council were held every year for two-year terms to the newest provincial system.

North Vancouver City and District to Host 2015 55+ BC Games J I M M CG R E G O R

on the success of the joint sponsorship by the City and Township of Langley for the 2014 BC Seniors Games, the City and District of North Vancouver have teamed up to host the newly branded 55+BC Games from August 25th. to 29th.,2015.

When making the announcement regarding awarding the 55+Seniors Games to the North Shore communities, Coralee Oakes, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development commented on the influence the Games have on host communities.

“These games have a tremendous economic impact on host communities-typically more than $2 million-and bring literally thousands of participants and supporters into the community,” said Minister Oakes. “They also leave legacies of community pride and a skilled volunteer base. I am fully confident that North Vancouver will do a first-rate job as Games host in 2015. Congratulations!”

Wayne Naka is the incoming President of the B.C. Seniors Games Society and with the new president comes a new games as BC Seniors Games Society officially rebranded its annual multi-sport event as the 55+ BC Games starting in 2015 with the North Vancouver Games.

“The new 55+ BC Games will strive to maintain its leadership as the premier multi-sport event and become widely recognized among all 55+ British Columbians as being friendly, welcoming, supportive and transformative,” Naka said in a press release.

The rebranding was made official by MLA and Deputy Premier Rich Coleman,

during the Closing Ceremony of the 2014 Games in Langley which ran from September 9-13.

President Brad Lund and members of the North Vancouver organizing committee of the 55+ Games in 2015 were at the Langley events Sept. 9-13. “I had no idea what we were getting into and our time spent here in Langley really opened our eyes as to the team work necessary from all the Directors. It was a plus to see the games in action and address any challenges before having to host them.”

More than 3900 athletes competed in the Langley Games supported by 1300 volunteers and a greater number is expected to register in North Vancouver in 2015.

“The City of North Vancouver is delighted to co-host the 2015 55 + BC Games”, says City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto. “In addition to presenting a significant economic benefit to the community, the games will support our physically active seniors, and promote health and wellness to the wider community. We look forward to welcoming participants, volunteers and spectators from around the province, and showcasing the City’s many attractions.”

If the apartment does not have a good deadbolt lock on the door, ask permission of the apartment manager to put one on the door. Do be certain that the management has a key if they need to gain access into your apartment.

If still uncertain, look up the telephone number, (do not accept one they give you) and call to verify the information.

When away from home, use timers for radios, televisions and lights so that your home looks occupied. If you will be away for a while, get a buddy system going with a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on each other’s home.
