A Message from Chamber Board Thank you Campbell River for nominating this year’s nominees, for supporting each other and for supporting our local businesses, who are enthusiastic participants in “Think(ing) Local”. Accentz Hair Studio

Accentz Hair Studio is a family oriented hair salon and esthetics studio operating since November 2004. At Accentz we cater to clients of all ages and genders, and are also pleased to be wheelchair accessible. Our salon specializes in all aspects of hair including cuts, colors, perms, special occasion up-doos, roller sets, etc. as well we have an esthetic section specializing in waxing , pedicures, manicures, facials, therapeutic massage, etc. Our aim is to give great service in a fun, relaxed and confidential atmosphere.

Dr. Lauzon graduated from the University of Montreal Optometry program in 1985. She studied hard for the next 6 months to pass the board exams enabling her to practice in BC and be near her fiancé, Don Huestis whom she had met at UBC several years earlier while on an exchange program to learn English. She was one of the first graduates from Quebec to pass the BC Board Exams as her education was in French and she would be practicing in English. In 1986 she opened her office in Campbell River, got married, and has been living happily ever since. In 1991, she and her husband purchased an old house at 730 13th Avenue and had it moved to provide the building site for their new office, Campbell River Optometry Centre.

Active Living Physiotherapy

Campbell River Visitor Centre

Quality, time, and expertise is what Active Living Physiotherapy clients experience. Our mission is to provide active residents of Campbell River and north Vancouver Island with research-based physiotherapy expertise in a one-on-one, client-centered setting. Our modern, paperless clinic has a “boutique style” approach which emphasizes longer than average appointment times and undivided attention for the entire appointment. We pride ourselves on thorough and comprehensive assessments that get to the root of the problem, and research-based treatment plans. Clients’ time is not wasted, we provide efficient yet effective care and empower or clients with knowledge about their condition. Improvement is measured by tangible results and we do not promote dependency on a health care professional.

The Campbell River Visitor Centre is your one-stop centre for information on events, businesses, attractions, recreation opportunities in our community and is operated under Campbell River Economic Development. We came into creation in 1985 in time for our province to host the world at Expo ’86, since then the Visitor Centre Network has grown and changed as needs for our visitors changed in the last 20 years. Our location in the Campbell River downtown core is envy to many centres across our province because of our proximity to local businesses, the waterfront and parking for RV’s and boats. Our focus is to promote our community so visitors to our area will extend their stay, or to come back. The service we provide to our visitors is second to none; we take pride in promoting as much as we can while we have them in our centre.

AJ’s Laundry

Carol Chapman

We bought AJ’s Laundry Service in September 2011. Our business provides commercial and residential laundry service to customers in the Campbell River, Comox Valley and Courtenay regions. Commercial customers include hotels, resorts, Doctors’ offices, nursing homes and senior citizens homes, automotive centers, car sales businesses, church groups, City of Campbell River, John Hart Generating Station, and more. Residents from the pubic also use our services, bringing in duvets, sleeping bags, horse blankets, table linens, curtains, pillows, work clothes, coveralls and more. The public can either leave their laundry with us to wash/dry/fold and bag or they are welcome to do their own laundry. We have full time attendants to assist as needed. AJ’s Laundry carries the slogan “Big or Small, AJ’s does it all.” We work in relationship with local businesses to help with their laundry needs.

BaBa Gannouj We opened our restaurant in 2007 not knowing what to expect. We put our effort into this, didn’t give up and got this far to make sure everyone liked our food, it was a big challenge for us to bring this type of food to a community that doesn’t have an idea of what the food is like, through our ups & downs, putting all our effort into the food makes everyone walk out falling in love with the food and the culture. What helped with the restaurant is our mobile kitchen as an advertising for the restaurant & for the type of food. We have attended lots of events all over Vancouver Island that made them realize we are in Campbell River, we also have more customers from out of town than here & think we brought more tourists into Campbell River because of our restaurant.

Balance Equestrian Centre The seeds of Balance Equestrian Centre started decades ago, when owner/operators Wanda Gust and Susan Gosnell met in the Vancouver Pony Club as young girls. Our devotion and passion for riding and coaching developed quickly. Over the years we honed our skills, sometimes together, sometimes on opposite ends of the continent while showing, grooming and mentoring under members of the Canadian Equestrian Team. Fast forward to 2013, when the opportunity to buy a 5.2 acre property in Campbell River arose. The property was perfectly set up for an equestrian facility, complete with an indoor arena. Although the idea seemed wild and almost unattainable, Wanda and Susan (and one husband!) gathered forces and funds, setting forth to open the doors of Balance Equestrian Centre in September 2013.

Balloons ‘N’ More Party Shop Balloons N More Party Shop was born in October 2005, when I saw an opportunity to create a retail business that would provide local residents with their party supply needs. Our focus is to provide our customers with everything needed to throw a memorable event, from birthdays, weddings, theme parties, graduation, fundraisers, lawn greetings & seasonal holidays. We also re-create our retail space every September to become Campbell River’s premiere Halloween Store. We are proud to support our local community service groups, non-profit societies, and local businesses with their needs for fundraising, event planning and organization awareness. Here at Balloons N More Party Shop we offer a one on one consultation to plan your event from custom ordering to last minute details and everything in between. We are the little store where big things happen.

Beijing House Beijing House is a truly authentic Chinese restaurant. For the last five years we have been serving only the very best Northern cuisine which differs greatly from the Southern cooking style often found in Canada. Local people who have travelled to China and tasted the difference appreciate our dishes the most. Dining at our restaurant always brings back good memories and stimulates great conversations. The second upcoming Chamber trip to China in 2015 shows an ever increasing interest in our home country with its ancient history and delicious and healthy food. Beijing House fills a niche that didn’t exist in Campbell River before. Many culinary secrets have been developed and kept closely at the emperors ‘ palaces in Beijing for the past 600 years. Nowadays many of these unique methods and tips have spread.

Thank you Campbell River for nominating us!

Jim Creighton Enterprises

Miracle Way Vacuum Systems

I came to Campbell River in 1988 as a float plane pilot answering a job offer. Campbell River was described to me by a friend as a great place to live, and to this day I owe him a debt of gratitude. I’ve raised my family here and I have every intention of remaining in Campbell River.

My passion has always been small appliance, circuits and engines. As a young boy, I would disassemble new remote controls to see how they worked. I would rebuild them as super remote controls. This passion progressed into Vacuums and my family helped me open the doors to my store in May of 2008. We are the ideal family owned operation and I am very proud of this. I feel that my customers can feel the love when they walk through the doors. I was raised with respect being of primary importance and I always pass this onto my customers.

Jim’s Clothes Closet

Ocean Mountain Yoga

In 1983 Don Ferster took ownership of Jim’s Clothes Closet in the Alberni Valley. Jim’s Clothes Closet’s second store opened in Courtenay in 1993. In 2003, Drew Bradley joined the team and is now the general manager of the three stores. In 2013, Don and Drew opened the more diverse, urban inspired Campbell River location, hiring Mark Baker as store manager and the face of the new store. To date Jim’s is a leading men’s fashion clothing store, offering a full concept clothing niche in three Island communities. While all three stores personally reflect the individuality of each island community the commonality is our uncompromising dedication to customer service, quality product, innovative fashion choices and custom options. True to Jim’s motto “Denim to Suits, for the Quality Man.”

Ocean Mountain Yoga is a partnership, owned by Dawn Pomponio & Lorna Seldon Burd. Although Ocean Mountain Yoga is only officially beginning its 3rd year in September 2014, the rental space that it occupies has been a yoga studio for many years, known as “Yoga Stream”, owned by Josey Slater. Dawn & Lorna both studied under Josey, as well as other teachers both locally, across provinces & abroad. When deciding to embark on a Yoga partnership, Dawn & Lorna chose to use the old studio as it has excellent sprung wooden floors and natural lighting. By September, the studio will have been renovated to increase in size by 1/3, giving additional “mat space” in the studio itself, as well as the addition of a lounge area for social interaction between students before or after class. We have identified this as a key point in our business.

Joanne Johnson Notary Public

Needle & Arts Centre

As a Notary Public, I can assist clients with the following: their new home purchases and sales; bare land purchases (to build their new dream home); mortgage documentation for purchasing property, a construction mortgage or refinancing their existing mortgage; Manufactured Home Purchases and Sales; Purchase and/or Sale of a small business; Powers of Attorney; Last Wills and Testaments; Representation Agreements and Advance Health Care Directives; Preparation of Statutory Declarations and notarizing of same; I really enjoy all aspects of my business, especially dealing with my clients - first home buyers are so fun, as they are so excited about their home purchase.

The Needle & Arts Centre is Campbell River’s local yarn, pottery and gift shop with customers all over North America. Always checking out newest trends, offering a wide variety of products and an outstanding customer service, this store has built up a reputation to be a source of inspiration, based on our very knowledgeable and experienced staff. In the Needle & Arts Centre, needlework, functional pottery and craft items, plus a variety of gifts and home decor items complement our rapidly growing yarn department. We recently added knitwear to our products, making our yarn store one of the most diverse and compelling destinations in Western Canada; some big city customers even tell us that we are the best yarn store they have ever been in.

Maria’s Anti-Aging Strategies & Treatments

On the Rocks Climbing Gym

My goal is to educate people of all ages to practice disease prevention that is, by definition, anti-aging. My strategy emphasizes that good diet and healthy life style alone are not sufficient for disease prevention. I recommend that people see me before they see a health care professional. Once I optimize their cellular health, the body can heal itself amazingly well. The missing links in disease prevention are comprehensive supplementation and protection from wireless radiation. With my scientific background I can confidently choose reputable companies with effective products. Some of them are very unique such as gene rejuvenating products with ageLOC technology. This technology identifies and targets, then rejuvenates sluggish Youth Gene Clusters in skin, muscle and brain cells.

On The Rocks Climbing Gym is one of Campbell River’s landmark recreational facilities. The sport of indoor rock climbing offers a lifetime of fitness and wellness opportunities for all ages. We are able to provide a rock climbing experience in a clean and comfortable environment and our ‘routes’ are designed to accommodate beginners who are looking for a fun thing to do or experienced climbers who seek the more serious challenges rock climbing can offer.

Proper Inspections Inc. Proper Home Inspections exists to perform the task that its name suggests: to complete home inspections in a proper, thorough manner. Home inspections are required in a number of circumstances by a number of different people – home sellers to prepare a house for the market, home buyers to determine the condition of a building, mortgage providers to assess the value and quality of a house, home owners either before or after renovations to determine the quality of a job, or insurers for the same reason. I am equipped and trained to handle difficult tasks such as mold inspections and air quality inspections including measuring asbestos levels. After an inspection, a complete, accurate, objective report of some thirty pages is prepared, using photos and data from the home.

Replay Sports Replay Sports began in 2011 with the idea of making still usable sports equipment available to others. Its Campbell River’s only consignment sports store dedicated to providing the community with new and gently used, quality sports equipment and apparel at favourable prices. Our goal is to present an opportunity for all Campbell River residents to partake in sports at a cost affordable to them. Many children outgrow their gear before they wear it out and others try it and decide it is not for them. Yet others want to buy high quality gear that is more than they can afford (or want to pay) therefore, they buy used. Replay Sports is a way to help recoup some of the expenses associated with sports and will help reduce the overall cost of recreational activities.

Category: Small Business of The Year Boyd’s Funeral Services

SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

(5 to 25 Employees)

Honours a business that has demonstrated continual business excellence through positive business growth; exemplified customer service and embraced an outstanding commitment to quantity and the community. Proudly sponsored by: Pioneer Home Hardware

Boyd’s Funeral Services was started as a response to the need for education about funeral requirements. Many people were finding themselves using a funeral provider, only when they desperately needed to and often had no concept of the difference between needs vs. wants. While there were providers willing to sell goods and services on an at-need basis, pre-planning wasn’t actively encouraged, nor was revealing what services were necessary and what were merely “recommended.” There really didn’t seem to be a service model that sought out the public before they required the services of a funeral home with the idea of telling them they needed to think about preparing for the eventualities of life (i.e death.). Our goal has been to demystify and have a fully transparent open door policy when it comes to funeral regulations and requirements in BC.

Kelly Lane and Brian Crothers opened Fusilli Grill in 1994. With their guidance and notes of wisdom (witch I might not of always noted at the time:) molded me to withhold their standards and built the passion I always had for this industry. I am grateful to have an amazing chef/partner to work and learn under whom shares my goals and together we will keep providing Campbell River with wholesome cooking and personal customer service.

Established in 1982 Merle Norman has grown and changed in the many years it has been in Campbell River. It started out as a cosmetic studio with a few accessories and has grown into a full service day spa with a large retail space, including over 450 Merle Norman items. Studio 10 Studio 10 has been in operation for the past ten years, starting out on my own as a chair renter in another salon in town. As the years proceeded I decided that I wanted more of a challenge and to open my own salon would be the thing to do. I wanted Studio 10 to be the one stop shop. To offer all hair, esthetics, spray tans and nail services to my clients would give them everything they would need in the beauty industry.

Category: Intermediate Business of The Year Royal Coachman Neighbourhood Pub The Royal Coachman Neighborhood Pub opened on May 5, 1978. It was the first neighborhood pub in Campbell River and there was a lot of fanfare! It was located across the street from its current location in the building that is now Video Works. Ken and Sylvia Phillips were the original publicans and stayed on for more than 20 years. There wasn’t a lot of choice in those days and “The Neighborhood” as it was fondly referred to was a meeting place for all ages. The menu consisted of a blackboard with fabulous daily specials. You were given a number and when your number was called you had to pick up your own meals. The lineups at the bar were always lively and most nights there was a bit of a wait to get in.

Ocean Mountain Yoga Ocean Mountain Yoga is a partnership, owned by Dawn Pomponio & Lorna Seldon Burd.

Category: Young Entrepreneur of the Year Kris Salter Miracle Way Vacuum Systems My passion has always been small appliance, circuits and engines.

Mimosa Palmberg

Curtis Wilson Mulidzas Arts

Bikram Yoga

I was born and raised in Campbell River. I married my wife Dayle in 2001 in New Zealand and we moved back to Campbell River to raise our young family. We have 2 beautiful children, Nalu-8 years and Gideon-4 years. In 2007 I was elected as a Councillor for the Wei Wai Kum Nation (Campbell River Band) and it was then that I started working for our people on a political level. In 2007 I also started working for the Nanwakolas Council as a Referrals Officer facilitating dialogue between First Nations and proponents and statutory decision makers regarding resource development applications submitted to the province of BC. I am also a young avid First Nations artist, working primarily in red and yellow cedar. I have been a young developing artist since 1999 and I am constantly learning new skills.

My name is Mimosa and I’m now 34 years old. I grew up on Galiano and Salt Spring Islands, and went to University in Victoria. I spent 7 years working as a social worker prior to opening Bikram Yoga Campbell River. I started practicing Bikram Yoga in 2004 as a way to get in shape and to sweat. I found much more, and went to teacher training in Los Angeles in 2006. The training is 9 weeks long and incredibly intense. It changed my life. After that, I spent a few years living in Ontario, working as a Child Protection Worker and yoga teacher, and having a couple of kids. My husband and I decided to move our family to Campbell River where I would follow my dream of opening a Bikram Yoga studio.

Wish Want Wear

Wish Want Wear educates and encourages the community to thrive with sustainability by upcycling or recycling gently used clothing and accessories for men and ladies. We support the community by posting upcoming/ongoing events, and activities in town on our community board in store and by donating/fundraising for the local organizations.

I grew up in Sayward and moved to Campbell River at 18. After completing my Animal Care Aide Certificate at North Island College I chose instead to go into Social Work as animal medicine didn’t appeal to me as a career despite my love for animals. While in social work I met a local man running a unique program teaching youth with FASD/FAE lifeskills through teaching them how to mush a sled dog team, take care of the team and eventually race up North. I chose to complete my practicum with this program and thus began my love of Siberian Huskies. After adopting two from the team and over time becoming aware of the intense traits of the breed and seeing that many were ending up in shelters and being given up along, I decided to start a dog rescue in 2012.

CR Animal Parties

CR DanceXtreme Inc.

I have always known that I was going to work with animals and run my own company. I went to college for Small Business Management and Environmental Sciences while simultaneously gaining experience in animal related positions in pet stores, zoos, aquariums, breeding facilities, shelters, rescues and rehabilitation clinics. Moving to Vancouver Island (more specifically Campbell River), and turning my dreams into a reality has been a fulfilling and enriching experience. This is, in large part, possible thanks to the kindness and nurturing nature of our local community.

CR DanceXtreme Inc. is a dance school that promotes confidence, discipline, technique and knowledge of dance at an elite level. We offer a wide array of styles such as Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Boys Only Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, & Acro Dance. We offer classes for dancers of all ages and levels, recreational & competitive programs, from age three to adult. Looking to improve and grow every day is a major goal for us as we work to stay successful and maintain a high level of professionalism. Staying up to date on all forms of dance, is an integral facet of our business.

Wanda Gust Balance Equestrian Center I have been a professional horse woman since my late teens and have worked, trained and ridden with a number of high level riders. Being a part of large professional show barn operations and seeing how they operate has shown me a paradigm to strive for in my own business. I took a break from riding in my 20s to obtain a degree in History then chose to work for the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee for two years. I was then recruited to the Rugby World Cup 2012 in New Zealand. Working for both these organizing committees has given me a unique perspective on business and attaining a set goal within a very short time frame.

Business Awards of Distinction The Campbell River Chamber has announced Shelly Boates, Managing Partner Chan Nowosad Boates, as the recipient of the 2014 Board of Governors Award for the Business Awards of Distinction. The Board of Governors Award is presented by the Chamber’s Board of Directors and honors a business person (current or retired) who displays a significant commitment to the success of both their business and the community as a whole; demonstrates business leadership and vision; and serves as a positive role model or mentor for other business people in the community. “We are pleased to honor Shelly as this year’s recipient in recognition of the success she has achieved in her roles as a business leader, a strong community volunteer advocate and for her mentorship support both within her business and the community at large, stated Mike Boulet, Chamber Board Chair.” Shelly obtained her CA designation in January 1995 and in 1996 she became a partner with Chan Nowosad Boates, Chartered Accountants. The practice has grown over the past 18 years from a small office of 5 to a team of 28. Chan Nowosad Boates is now one of the largest independent accounting firms on the North Island serving the needs of small to large businesses, not for profits, school districts, first nations, credit unions, individuals and estates. Even though work keeps her extremely

busy, Shelly is an avid long-time volunteer. Along with her continued commitment to Junior Achievement BC, where she started volunteering in 2009 and continues till today, she has been a Director and most recently Chair of Community Futures of Strathcona where she served on the board from 2003 till 2014. Her commitment to United Way spans over 11 years and resulted in Shelly becoming a member of the Lead Partners where she also served on the Success By Six Community Council of Partners from 2008 till 2011 and the allocation committee of United Way Central and North Vancouver Island. Shelly’s volunteer involvement also extended to the Campbell River Minor Hockey Association and Campbell River Community Foundation Golf Tournament. As well, she was a volunteer with the Campbell River Brach of Canadian Parents for French that supported and promoted and supported the French Immersion program with SD72. Through Shelly’s volunteer activities and her workplace, she has been exposed to and created many opportunities to lead and educate members of the community through her exceptional mentorship style. She has been a workshop and professional development presenter for the Law Society of BC, Community Futures Business Succession Planning seminars, Business Professional Women’s Network (BPWN) and many other community and business related organizations and individuals. Her leadership has contributed significantly to support young professional retention in Campbell River and a demonstrated commitment to

community growth and capacity building. In addition to receiving the Chamber’s Small Business of the Year award, Shelly was the recipient of the Early Achievement Award through the Institute of Chartered Accountants as well as a ’40 under 40’ Business in Vancouver outstanding achievement award winner. Shelly and her husband Dean are the proud parents of two wonderful boys, Jackson and Jordan. Jackson just graduated and has joined the Campbell River workforce and Jordan is attending Carihi. “Congratulations Shelly, our community looks forward to celebrating and honoring your accomplishments at the awards event on September 27”, added Colleen Evans, Chamber President & CEO.
