Living in the most content city in the area

by Brian Coombs On November 15, local citizens will turn out in droves to vote in their choices for the mayor and council of the city, Regional District directors and school trustees.

Traffic gridlock could be a problem as voters vie to be the first to cast their ballot.

Ha ha, just kidding.

For the last round of local elections, Cranbrook had 14,810 eligible voters. Of that amount, 4,865 cast their

vote—around 33 per cent.

Now that is not the worst in the province.

Langford, a city with just over 20,000 voters, had just shy of 14 per cent cast a ballot. The provincial average was around 30 per cent.

These pitiful numbers can only mean one thing: we, as municipal residents, are overwhelmingly content. Locally, this appears to be truest in Cranbrook, which had the lowest turnout amongst its neighbours

Creston, Kimberley, Fernie, Sparwood and Invermere. In Elkford, the council and mayor were acclaimed, so that community must be the only one in the area to be even more content than Cranbrook.

When you parse voting data even further, you will find that there is a certain small amount of the population that always votes, no matter what. Those people can be discounted from analysis, because they would participate no matter how contented they are. The remaining few must have some issues with the way the city, schools and

Regional District are being run, but we live in a democracy, which means the majority wins.

And the majority stayed away from the voting booth.

We truly are happy with everything local.

I’m not sure why the marketing arm of Cranbrook (and even more so, Elkford) isn’t trumpeting these results to the world. The catchphrase could be, “Visit the city that is too happy to vote,” or “The city with absolutely no problems or concerns; Cranbrook.”

In the spirit of political one-upsmanship,

“We have a goal of $10,000 this year, so

we’ve added an additional component to our fund raising efforts. We have a bike raffle and other prizes in October that will add to our total.

We are pretty hopeful that we will meet our goal.”

municipalities without any power to do actual change. There is, however, the flip side of that coin which states that with these financial constraints, (which also exist for regional and school districts) it is more important than ever to elect smart, resourceful people to these positions.

But these people are not the majority.

Remember, the majority is pleased as punch with the way things are going.

Of course, chances are there are people out there with concerns.

Cranbrook could even take the opportunity to take potshots at other local communities. The city could point out that the residents of Kimberley, (with a 53 per cent turnout) and Invermere, (with a 50 per cent turnout) are (half) filled with malcontents, so why not move to Cranbrook?

One-hundred per cent of the dollars raised will directly benefit Cops for Kids, who in turn support local kids in medical, physical or traumatic crisis within the Southern Interior of BC. The Cops for Kids riders arrived in Cranbrook from Creston during a down pour of rain, but that didn’t hold them back or dampen their sprits from a Meet and Greet at Boston Pizza with a winning VIP ticket holder and her friends, to showing their goods on the catwalk.

ride is the Cops for Kids annual event held every September. The purpose of the ride is to showcase its sponsors, and help to gain awareness throughout the Southern Interior of the province.

The grueling ten day ride starts in Kelowna and goes over some very challenging terrain. For the past twelve years Tamarack Centre has been involved with fund raising by hosting The All Male Fashion Show on the evening that the Cops for Kids ride into Cranbrook. This not only helps raise awareness for the organization, but also gives them an opportunity to highlight local recipients of the funding source.

Cooper, who responded to a request for College of the Rockies participation from Theresa Southam, Coordinator of the Teaching and Learning Institute at Selkirk College, will be speaking on Internationalization: From Awareness to Promotion.

“I am sharing personal stories of my own process of becoming more aware of other cultures and how I’ve now come to encourage and promote internationalization through the work that I do at the College,” Cooper says.

“I am honoured to have been asked to speak and am looking forward to hearing others speak on the theme of crossing cultural borders.”

College of the Rockies currently hosts 203 international students from 34 countries.

Cooper is quick to point out that internationalization means more than bringing students from other countries to attend school here, however.

Chances are they are not happy with the sign bylaws, municipal deer, the local RCMP, wastewater projects, loud neighbours, their child’s education, regional land issues, and a host of other area concerns.

Chances are that they are not afraid to tell you about these problems.

And, according to the numbers, chances are they did not vote.

So stay away from the voting booth during this round of municipal elections. If no one shows up at all, this will confirm that Cranbrook is the most content place on the planet. the College. It adds so much to the college experience for them, our domestic students, as well as the staff. We don’t stop there, however. The International department manages and coordinates projects overseas which provide opportunities for staff, student and community participation, we are involved in other community opportunities including developing friendships through our Homestay program, and the College builds on the experiences brought back from international travel from staff and students, including bringing these experiences into the classroom and incorporating them in curriculum development,” Cooper adds.

The work being done by College of the Rockies’ International department has not gone unnoticed. In April, they were ranked number one in the world for international student satisfaction by the i-graduate International Student Barometer 2013 Survey and in May were awarded the Association of Canadian Community Colleges’ (now Colleges and Institutes Canada) Gold Internationalization Excellence award.

Literacy fundraising campaign approaches

to raise money for the Reach a Reader campaign.

Now in it’s fourth year, the campaign, which occurs in communities across the

All money raised in Cranbrook will stay in the community.

Improving literacy rates improves quality of life, according to Katherine Hough, community literacy coordinator for CBAL. “Literacy is not just reading and writing and numeracy, but they cover all aspects of life,” said Hough. “We know that people with improved literacy skills get more involved in the community, they’re more likely to volunteer, they’re more active with their children.

“They become their child’s best teacher,

because they have the skills to support their children in school.”

People from all backgrounds and walks of life can benefit from improving their literacy, Hough added.

“Here, we see in Cranbrook, so many people who have missed learning opportunities, whether they’re 19-year-old single moms who are wanting to finish their Grade 12 or seniors who are coming back to learn computer skills, their lives are improved through that reconnection with their education,” she said.

Though for a good cause, the campaign is competitive in nature as

local business and community leaders attempt to out raise those from other communities across the Basin.

Cranbrook holds the title as the top fundraising community in the Kootenay region.

“This is an annual initiative for Black Press and CBAL and it has been very successful,” said Chuck Bennett, Group Publisher for Black Press, Kootenays.

“We think working with literacy in our local communities across the region is an important project for us at Black Press. We think it is critical that we support literacy and can’t think of a better place for us to put our energies

behind.”

Mayor Stetski and councillor Sharon Cross, along with Jason Wheeldon and members of the College of the Rockies Avalanche volleyball team, will be out and about in Cranbrook.

All will be easily recognizable (except for Wheeldon—who knows what his costume will be this year?) by their enthusiastic sales pitches and their Black Press newspaper carrier bags. Through a donation to the campaign, anyone can pick up a copy of the Daily Townsman or the Kootenay Advertiser.

sales to the campaign, while the Heidout will be doing the same, along with proceeds from a lunch special.

Volunteers will be stationed at the Cranbrook Public Library and the Tamarack Centre as well.

“This is a campaign that hits close to home,” said Karen Johnston, Daily Townsman publisher. “As a child, I overcame reading challenges because I had a great teacher who helped me discover the value of literacy and the knowledge it brings. I am very excited to see the community come together to raise money and awareness for such an important program.”

Anatomy of a Panic Attack

Last week I experienced my first panic attack.

Over the last 17 years of practice I have treated many people for panic attacks and now, having had one myself, I have a much greater appreciation for just how, well, scary they are. We use the terms anxiety and panic attack and really what we are talking about is fear. Perhaps these conditions are driven by the underlying fear of death that all of us have. Well, not all. It turns out that the fear of death is primarily a younger person's affliction. As we age it seems that the fear of death declines. One of the things that is so terrifying about a panic attack is that it feels like a heart attack. Both can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating, tingling and nausea.

When in doubt, it is always best to go to the ER to be checked out by the people that can save your life. I experienced chest tightness, shortness of breath and lightheadedness and after about 5 minutes, laying on the

floor wondering how the heck I had arrived at age 47 and flat on the floor, the symptoms eased. There are some key elements to treating panic attacks and generalized anxiety. Caffeine, sugar and alcohol should all be avoided as their use can promote panic.

Meditation has also been shown to be an important tool in the management of fear and panic attacks.

In 2001 Passiflora (a plant also called passion flower) was studied with Oxazepam (a benzodiazepine) and found to work equally as well.

Passiflora, however, did not cause the workplace impairment common with benzodiazepines.

The Germans make an excellent passiflora remedy called Pascoflair that is also used for insomnia. Acupuncture can also be extremely helpful in the treatment of panic attacks as can Griffonia, which raises serotonin levels in the brain. And let's not forget about exercise and living a balanced life of work and play.

The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) are seeking proposals for projects that will benefit conservation in the area from Spillimacheen to Canal Flats utilizing the Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund (CVLCF). Closing dates for project submissions is 4:30 p.m. October 31st, 2014.

Beginning promptly at 7:00pm, Canadian health experts on both sides of the fluoride debate will address the public with the presentation being moderated by David Walls, President and CEO of the College of the Rockies. The speakers will be available to meet the public and the media to respond to questions for the remainder of the evening. The speakers are: • Dr. Alastair Nicoll of the BC Dental Association and an area dentist who will discuss the advantages of adding fluoride to the public water system.

• Dr. James Beck, Professor Emeritus for Medical Biophysics at the University of Calgary and coauthor of ‘ The Case Against Fluoride’, who is a vocal advocate for removing fluoride from the water system.

Smoke alarms have become such a common feature of our households that they’re often taken for granted, and aren’t tested and maintained as they should.

However, working smoke alarms are a critical fire safety tool that can mean the difference between life and death

in a home fire. Smoke alarms can significantly increase your chance of surviving a residential fire. Many of the deaths associated with house fires could have been prevented with the proper smoke alarm protection.

As a member of the fire service for 29 years, I’ve seen the devastating effects of fire firsthand; the burn injuries, the loss of homes and possessions are distressing. What’s even worse is witnessing a family’s anguish after a loved one has been seriously injured or killed in a fire.

This year’s theme is “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month”.

Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services will be hosting local grade 3 students throughout the week of November 17-21st and we are hoping to better educate the public about the true value of working smoke alarms.

My sincere hope is that all Cranbrook grade 3 students will participate in our Fire Prevention Week activities, and that their families make sure there are working smoke alarms installed throughout their homes.

Here are some additional smoke alarm tips to follow: Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.

Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.

Test alarms each month by pushing the test button.

Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they are 10 years old or sooner if they do not respond properly.

Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound and understands what to do when they hear the smoke alarm (Fire Escape Plan).
