Applause erupted in a Vancouver courtroom Thursday morning as a judge found two men guilty of planning and carrying out the execution of six men in a Surrey apartment seven years ago. Cody Haevischer and Matt Johnston were convicted by Justice Catherine Wedge in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver of conspiracy to murder drug dealer Corey Lal and of the first-degree murder of Lal, his brother Michael, Eddie Narong, Ryan Bartolomeo and innocent victims Ed Schellenberg of Abbotsford and Christopher Mohan of Surrey. Schellenberg was a gas fitter who happened to be servicing fireplaces in the Balmoral Tower building that day. The other four young men had links to the drug trade and were visiting apartment 1505, where drugs were manufactured and packaged for sale on the street. Schellenberg’s wife Lois, as well as family and friends, attended court Thursday, but did not speak to media. The trial began last September, calling 73 witnesses over 80 days of testimony. The Crown’s theory was that Haevischer, Johnston and a man who can only be identified as Person X – all Red Scorpion gang members – carried out the murders, prompted by notorious gangster Jamie Bacon of Abbotsford, who wanted rival drug dealer Corey Lal dead. The other five, the Crown Continued on A6
