Third annual Lacombe Arts and Culture Festival a success Story and photos by Brian Vossen/Lacombe Express It was a cold and somewhat wet weekend, but organizers are calling the third annual Lacombe Culture and Harvest Festival a success nonetheless.

Lacombe Culture and Harvest Festival organizer Ellen Corea said turnout for the event was actually quite good.

“It was great, we were really pleased,” said Corea. “We had some great numbers actually.”

In particular, Corea said that the wagon rides and Children’s County Fair had high turnouts with the rides being full throughout the day and over 1,000 people going to the Children’s County Fair.

So You Think You’re a Cowboy, a new event that kicked off the festival Friday evening, was also very well received by the community.

Corea said that she was a bit worried when she woke up to stormy weather Friday morning, but things improved as the day progressed and

while the weather was quite cool at times those who attended the Culture and Harvest Festival events did not seem to mind.

Even the concert and fireworks on the cold Saturday night still saw between 300 and 400 people attending. Corea added that the Lacombe Culture and Harvest Festival heralding colder weather has been the trend for the past few years now.

“It was cool out at the concert,” said Corea.

“For the last couple years, it’s sort of like that’s our move into fall.”

Corea said that a few events, one drawing course and a fermenting class were cancelled due to low registration numbers, but those events that did run were well attended.

Wayne Spink reflects on career as an artist Some works are featured in City Hall and the Lacombe Memorial Centre

T

oday, Wayne Spink has retired as a professional artist.

However, his work will still be enjoyed by many for decades to come thanks to his contributions to Lacombe’s public art collection.

Spink is the artist behind the beautiful glass etchings on display in Lacombe City Hall and the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

He enjoyed his career as an artist, but said these days he is content to do art purely for his own enjoyment.

“What I’m going to create I’m going to create for myself.”

Spink developed an interest in glass etching after seeing some examples of the art form in a book. I t was a period where the medium was quite rare, Spink said.

“At that time there were virtually no studios to speak of doing it,” said Spink.

“Even with regards to literature or books on it there was very little.”

What etchings were done were usually done using powerful acid and not sandblasting - the method Spink was interested in.

So, he taught himself the art form by researching what information he could and learning the rest by trial and error.

“When I first started, I was breaking glass like crazy,” said Spink.

In his youth, Spink was always making things and there was a creative element to most of the things he did, but it wasn’t something he was cognizant of at the time.

“I wasn’t aware of being creative growing up.”

While he had a creative spark within him, it took Spink a long time before he considered himself an artist.

Spink was well into his adulthood before he had a revelation wherein he realized that he had been an artist all along, even if he hadn’t thought so at the time.

“I couldn’t call myself an artist,” said Spink. “That didn’t happen until I was in my late 40s early 50s. I had been almost in denial. I was an artist all along, but I could never call myself an artist. Until that moment, I never felt worthy of calling myself an artist.”

But Spink still tried his hand at a career as a full time artist long before calling himself one. As a young man, he called his parents asking for their support while he tried out a new venture.

Spink got the support he was looking for and moved home with his parents. That’s when he started experimenting with sand-

blasting glass etching.

“I gave up everything and worked at it day and night,” said Spink.

He added that he learned a lot about the type of discipline required to be an artist.

“If you want to become something you have to put the energy into it in order for it to materialize,” said Spink.

For the next 10 to 12 years, Spink pursued a career as a full-time artist. During that time, he was approached by the City (at that point the Town) of Lacombe and asked to do some pieces for the public art collection.

“I GAVE UP EVERYTHING AND WORKED AT IT DAY AND NIGHT. IF YOU WANT TO BECOME SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO PUT THE ENERGY INTO IT IN ORDER FOR IT TO MATERIALIZE.” WAYNE SPINK Spink begins the process of creating a glass etching by drawing a draft for the rendering of the design.

He then transfers the rendering onto the sheet of glass he will be working on.

He then attaches sheets thick sandblast resist to the glass.

Spink begins by etching the deepest parts of the design first and working his way toward the viewer as it were.

As he gets closer to the front, Spink removes more and more layers of the sandblasting resist.

Throughout the process of creating one piece, Spink will do several layers of sandblasting.

For example, his piece in City Hall depicting the Flatiron Building contains 15 layers of etching.

Of course, there is no eraser on a sandblaster, so it is important for Spink to be very accurate when he is working.

“There is no room for error,” said Spink.

He added when he does make mistakes, he has to find a way to make them blend into the design.

Nowadays, Spink has mostly gotten out of the glass etching game.

He said he stopped that when the building he was renting studio space in was sold and he had to move out and it would be quite costly for him to set up a new studio.

Instead, Spink spends his time doing different art for himself.

He said that he is dabbling in wood carving, acrylic painting on plexi-glass, and encaustic. news@lacombeexpress.com

St. Andrew’s United Church receives official designation

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express After much build-up, St. Andrew’s United Church has received its official designation as Lacombe’s first ever municipally designated historical resource.

On Sept. 28th, a special worship service to commemorate and celebrate the designation was held.

During the service, those in attendance heard special greetings from Mayor Steve Christie on behalf of the City and the Historical Society.

“I’m here today to join you in celebrating a milestone for this congregation as well as the City of Lacombe,” said Christie.

Outside the service, Christie commented on how the designation was a long-time coming but very well deserved.

“It’s been a long time in the making,” said Christie. “Yes it’s a building. But it is part of our culture, part of Lacombe’s culture, part of Lacombe growing up, part of Lacombe’s past.”

City Planner Jennifer Kirchner, who is also the President of the Lacombe and District Historical Society, said she hopes this is just the beginning of Lacombe’s municipal historic resources.

“I hope that other heritage property owners will follow St. Andrew’s lead and consider designating their properties as Municipal Historic Resources,” said Kirchner.

When speaking to the children of St. Andrew’s before sending them to their own worship time during the service, Reverend Ross Smillie pointed out to the children

some of the features in the sanctuary of the church that represent periods of the school history.

For example, the stained glass window at the far end of the church recognizes all those who fought in the First World War. The wood carving of the dove and the cross was built by a former pastor in remembrance of his son who died in a plane crash and was donated on behalf of all parents who had lost children.

After the service, Smillie said there are a few more examples of features in the church that represent its timeline.

“Each generation puts its mark on it.”

He went on to say that the church has been built in stages with the first part built in 1908-1909.

Pastor Marco Ste-Marie, a newcomer to Lacombe and to St. Andrew’s, spoke in his sermon at the service on how it is important to commemorate the building of St. Andrew’s Church, but also important to celebrate the people behind it.

He said that in designating the building, it also recognizes how important the congregation has been to the community of Lacombe as well.

“One doesn’t go without the other,” said Ste-Marie. He added that the church building is used by a number of groups outside of its congregation throughout the week.

St. Andrew’s United Church has long been a centre for the community outside its immediate congregation.

Smillie said there are 22 community groups that currently make use of space inside St. Andrew’s to hold meetings, events and programs.

James (Jim) Dixon, a long-time member of the St. Andrew’s congregation who was active in getting its designation as a historical resource, also commented on how the building and the congregation behind it has served the community as a whole.

Dixon said that St. Andrew’s United Church has filled roles of facilities not existing in Lacombe. Perhaps most commonly, St. Andrew’s is used as a performing arts hall as such, hosting many concerts

throughout the year, especially during the Lacombe Music Festival in March.

“I think that’s particularly meaningful in the community because Lacombe has been without any sort of equivalent facility,” said Dixon.

He added that designating the building recognizes the roles St. Andrew’s Church has filled in the community for last 100plus years. news@lacombeexpress.com

Council allows for agreement on unused road allowance Council has come to an agreement regarding an encroachment within the County. At a regular meeting on Sept. 25th, Lacombe County council agreed to enter into a 30-year non-transferable encroachment agreement with County resident Jerry Bauer, allowing him to remain on County property.

At a meeting on Aug. 28th, Bauer appeared in front of council with an offer to buy an unused road allowance after the County discovered that Bauer was constructing a shop which encroached on the adjacent allowance and had also placed a mobile home on the County property.

County Commissioner Terry Hager brought forth a recommendation at that meeting that council deny Bauer’s request and take steps to ensure the encroaching buildings are removed from the unused road allowance as per council’s policy.

When the issue was brought up again at council’s most recent meeting, council heard from both administration and Bauer how sightlines could be improved on the nearby existing road (a safety concern that had been brought up in relation to the structures Bauer had built) and Bauer even offered to do the work at his own cost should he be allowed to occupy the unused road allowance.

However, Hager said whether or not such work could be done was irrelevant.

Council also continued to discuss if Bauer should be allowed to occupy the land even though he knew the building was on the road allowance.

It was something that did not sit well with Councillor Rod McDermand, who voiced his support for defending the policy at the previous meeting and again at the most recent one.

Councilor Ken Wigmore seemed to agree. He said Bauer placed structures on the road allowance knowingly multiple times and while unfortunate for Bauer, council’s policy should be upheld. “I guess from my perspective there is unfortunately a few wrongs here,” said Wigmore. “Mr. Bauer knew where he was building.”

All of council seemed willing to, at the very least, hear other options than forcing Bauer to move. Bauer did apologize for his actions and said he was willing to make amends wherever possible.

Dana Kreil, who stated before she was in favour of finding a “workable solution” in light of these events, made a motion to accept Bauer’s offer to purchase the unused road allowance and have Bauer acquire the right of way for the reconstruction of the existing road. That motion was defeated by a vote of 3 – 2.

After more discussion, Kreil made a second motion to enter into an encroachment agreement with Bauer that passed 3 – 2.

Councillors Barb Shepherd and Paula Law were absent from the meeting.

MAN CHARGED WITH CHILD PORNOGRAPHY A 58-year-old Blackfalds man has been arrested on child pornography charges by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT).

ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation team, with the assistance of Blackfalds RCMP, arrested Anthony Gordon Murray on Sept. 29th. He is being charged with possession, accessing and making available child pornography. The investigation commenced after ALERT investigators received information from the RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre (NCECC) on child pornography being accessed online.

FIRE DAMAGES HOME Blackfalds Fire was dispatched to a structure fire on Monday in the trailer park on the north end of Blackfalds. Lacombe Fire was also dispatched for mutual aid and the blaze was quickly

brought under control.

It is unknown at this time how the fire was caused but Blackfalds Fire Chief Robert Coté said it appears to have started in the skirting underneath the mobile home.

No one was in the mobile home at the time.

MISCHIEF TO SCHOOL On Sept. 11th, Lacombe Police Service received a complaint of public mischief to JS McCormick School and Father Lacombe Catholic School in Lacombe.

Suspects currently unknown to police had used purple spray paint to write a variety of graffiti on different areas of both schools.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact LPS at 403-782-3279 or Crimestoppers at 1-800222-8477.

WOMAN LOSES LEG AFTER HIT AND RUN Leah Cobetto, the 22-year-old woman who was struck by an allegedly drunk driver while walking home

by Brian Vossen on the night of Sept. 23rd, has had her right leg amputated below the knee as a result of her injuries.

A fundraising web site for Cobetto has been set up at www.youcaring.com and a barbeque has been set to take place at the Lacombe Memorial Centre on Oct. 5th from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

According to police, the driver of the vehicle that struck Cobetto was fleeing from Blackfalds RCMP at the time of the collision.

Police said the driver did not stop after colliding with the pedestrian and the incident was considered by police to be a hit and run.

In relation to the incident, Blackfalds RCMP have charged William Joel Cameron of Red Deer with impaired driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop and assist an injured person and possession of stolen property.

Cameron will be held in custody until his next court appearance which is scheduled for Oct. 7th in Red Deer.

Wine, chocolate and treats for community support services

It’s a great date night

There are a lot of different items up for auction that can ďŹ t every person who attends,â€? Pocock said. “My favourite thing about the Sip N’ Savour is the energy that happens in the room – it’s just so fun,â€? she said. “People are laughing and eating and it comes together to create a great night. It brings everybody together and we’re getting delicious samples that are all community-based.â€?

All of the funds raised from the Sip N’ Savour event will directly go to funding community programs such as Lifeline, Home Support, Healthy Families, Meals on Wheels and more. OPINION History alive and well Lacombe’s old buildings are more than just old buildings.

Lacombians are very proud of their history and heritage. This is evident in the number of historical buildings that exist in the City and the support seen at heritage celebrations like the Lacombe Culture and Harvest Festival that took place this past weekend.

During one event held in conjunction with the festival last weekend, the importance of Lacombe’s history was thrown into sharp relief.

On Sunday, Sept. 28th, the City of Lacombe officially designated St. Andrew’s United Church as its first ever municipal historic resource.

During a special worship service for the designation, Pastor Marco Ste-Marie spoke of how St. Andrew’s United Church is not a building, but a community made up of people.

Ste-Marie brought to light the real reason why historic buildings should be commemorated. It’s not only the buildings themselves that are important, it’s the people behind them.

Yes, the building of St. Andrew’s

United Church has a lot of historic architectural significance that is important to preserve.

It also has features that commemorate certain time periods.

However, none of those would exist if not for the community behind the build, the congregation of the church, the church itself.

St. Andrew’s United Church, like all Lacombe’s federally and provincially designated historic resources, as well as all other Lacombe’s historic buildings that have not (yet) been designated at all, are standing monuments to Lacombe’s proud and rich history.

As such, they are also monuments to the people who lived, built and worked in them.

In designating this building, the City of Lacombe has not only recognized the historic impact the building of St. Andrew’s United Church has had on the community, but also the incredible historic impact the congregation of that church has had on the community.

Now, through the designation of what might seem like just an old building, over a century’s worth of St. Andrew’s United Church members have been immortalized

as well. Their contributions to this community will never be forgotten.

As was discussed during the special worship service, St. Andrew’s United Church is more than the home for Lacombe’s United Church congregation. It is a facility used by the entire community.

More than just for its congrega-

tion, St. Andrew’s is a centre for the entire community of Lacombe.

That incredible community centre could not be possible without the congregation behind it. For that, we thank them.

And we also thank the City of Lacombe for recognizing that commitment.

AUMA convention a worthwhile experience In the last full week of September, Blackfalds Council members and I had the opportunity to attend the annual Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) Convention and Trade Show. The AUMA is a provincial association that supports our cities, towns, villages and summer villages with professional development, business services and advocacy with the provincial government.

The convention kicked off on a high note with the Town of Blackfalds winning the 2014 Sustainability in Action Award for a community with a population of between 2,500 – 10,000 residents. This award recognizes exceptional performance in implementing municipal sustainability plans. The award was based on the facilities, programming and services at the Abbey Master Builder Centre that have been designed to meet the social needs of the residents of the Town of Blackfalds.

This convention also regularly provides an avenue for communities to bring forward formal requests for changes that they would like to see.

This year Blackfalds presented a resolution calling for an exemption to the reporting requirements for commissions that do not provide specific services are who are solely funded by provincial grant funding. The intent is to allow more of the funding dollars to be used toward the intended projects of the commission and less on the

preparation and submission of reporting requirements. I am pleased to share that the AUMA delegates in attendance voted in favor of this resolution and that the AUMA will now be bringing this request forward to the relevant provincial government ministry as well.

I am always impressed by the wide range of important topics and issues that are being worked on by the AUMA, its elected directors and its volunteer committee members.

I have served on the Sustainability and the Environment Committee since 2008 and I am very proud of the achievements of that group.

We have worked on practical water conservation plans, recycling and solid waste management initiatives and sustainability planning.

This year our committee provided a panel discussion on ‘brownfields’ to the AUMA delegates.

Other educational opportunities at the conference included presentations on seniors housing, emergency management and partnership building.

AUMA delegates are also able to meet with provincial government ministers and discuss concerns and issues that are important to their communities.

Premier Prentice and the leaders of all the opposition parties were also in attendance at the confer-

ence. Blackfalds council members met with the Ministry of Alberta Transportation and RCMP ‘K’ division officials to dialogue about our local concerns. We also spoke with Premier Prentice and shared Blackfalds’ concerns regarding the long wait for the construction of our new school.

This was a positive discussion and we will follow up with the new Minister of Infrastructure in the very near future.

Participation at the AUMA conference is an important part of an elected official’s duties.

We are able to learn from our respected colleagues and to build relationships with other municipalities that are dealing with or have dealt with similar challenges.

Our participation at this event is made possible by our community.

The council team extends its thanks to our residents for supporting our attendance at this event and other relevant professional development opportunities and works hard to ensure that our time spent at these endeavors is productive and fiscally responsible. I am very proud to work with a team of councillors that shows so much respect for this investment in our community.

Innovation at the Lacombe Research Centre

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express The scientists at the Lacombe Research Centre are busy working to improve Canada’s agriculture industry with their work on innovative technology and processing techniques.

There are between 70 and 80 professionals who contribute to the work of this institute.

Recently, studies have been on such topics as plant fertilizing techniques to reduce weed growth and revolutionary technology to analyze meat quality.

“What is interesting is the collaborative approach that the scientists have taken.

In the same team, you’ll see a weeds specialist, a soil specialist, a classical economist, an entomologist – and they come up with recommendations,” said Dr. Francois Eudes, acting director for research development and technology with Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada.

A recent example of the product of this collaboration is a new fertilizing technique that will allow desired products to grow without weeds having access to the fertilizers. The goal of this research is to help farmers yield better crops while using less pesticide and fertilizing crops more efficiently.

“For example, seeds of weeds that have shed on the surface of the soil capture fertilizers and start to grow aggressively.

With fertilizer supplies, researchers realized they could apply less and put it right into the soil where the crop seed is seeded.

That way, a plant is germinated and has a chance to grow and the weeds do not have access to the fertilizer,” said Eudes.

This practice will reduce the use of her-

bicides, which carries obvious environmental benefits.

However, there are also economic interests behind this practice.

By using less fertilizer and applying it directly to the desired seeds, crops can grow more quickly and better which results in a better yield and more product available for farmers.

“Researchers compared different management practices. They look at the seed density, the depth of seeding and the establishment of genotype effect so that essentially they can come up with the best practices that would reduce costs for farmers in managing their crops.”

The research done at the Lacombe facility is tested in a variety of growth environments so that farmers across Canada can utilize the data gathered at this facility.

Eudes explained that all of the research done at the Lacombe facility must align with provincial and federal priorities and, “Must consider the adoption of these types of sciences in the industry.” He also said that each project is extensively peer reviewed by scientists in universities, other federal research facilities and even scientists outside of Canada.

Eudes said that this practice helps ensure that the projects and research at the facility are worthwhile and generally considered by professionals to be helpful to the industry.

The Lacombe facility works on both crop and meat production studies.

The crop aspect of research includes topics such as environmentally-friendly farming techniques, soil and crop management services and developing grain varieties that have better resistance to disease.

The meat production and research focuses on issues such as reducing contamination, determining and maintaining quality levels, developing strategies to improve food storage, production and safety and finding new ways to raise livestock.

“This is the only federal centre looking at the meat quality and they do something I find very neat.

“Right now, if you look at the way livestock is processed going into a slaughterhouse there is no way to determine difference in quality until the meat is processed,” explained Eudes.

“There are questions about how we could rapidly identify and maybe differentiate between grades of cattle. These scientists are looking at infrared technology or non-invasive technology such as NIR, where there is no physical contact with the meat, which is important because you don’t want any contamination.”

This technology is not currently used

and is still being researched, developed and constructed. What would happen is an indirect measurement would take place with the use of infrared technology that would assess meats based on things such as fat content, degree of marbling and maturity.

“They are making really great progress in the use of this technology for indirect measurement on the quality of the meat - especially when it comes to fat content.

It would help in an effort to provide a differentiation between our beef and international market beef.”

Eudes said that the researchers at Lacombe are a crucial part of a network of scientists and professionals in the agriculture industry.

In defense of standards of the Christian faith With the popularity of social media, many of our sports heroes have taken to expressing themselves via Twitter, facebook, etc.

And we have seen at times professional teams and the bodies that govern them speaking out very strongly against specific comments made by some athletes.

At times, speaking out against these athletes was just a small token of what disciplinary measures might be taken against them if apologies for the statements made were not forthcoming.

I have a friend who works in one of the big banks of Canada.

He has explained that this bank has policies that do not permit any comment that could be construed as being negative regarding any employee’s race, religion or sexual orientation.

I enjoy watching hockey and baseball.

When the referee makes a call, or when the umpire calls you out at the plate, there is no point in arguing that the pitch was too low to be a strike.

The umpire has the authority to say ‘ball’ or ‘strike.’ And if you argue, he can throw you out of the game.

We all accept the right of professional sports teams to discipline their members who violate their standards.

Isn’t it strange then, when Christians declare what their standards are, based on the Bible, given to man by God, that many people get all riled up and declare that Christians are intolerant.

If we speak out against the practice of homosexuality (not those who are homosexual but the lifestyle), we are accused of being hate mongers.

If we say that killing unborn children is wrong we are told to keep out of the personal affairs of people.

If we speak of heaven and hell, we are narrow-minded zealots.

But our society has shifted to the point where everyone has rights to say what they believe and rights to practice what they believe, but Christians should be made to shut their mouths about what they believe.

We were a country founded on a Judeo-Christian heritage, and despite that heritage, because we believe in religious free-

dom, we give Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and any other religions the right to declare what they believe.

And I am glad they can enjoy that freedom in Canada which is not available in many parts of the world.

Why do we make Christians the exception and try to muzzle their right to declare what they believe?

Why is it that they get labelled as intolerant and no one else does.

The reality is that if we

as a society are willing to tolerate everything, then we really value nothing.

But the moment I value something, I must logically oppose the opposite of what I value.

If I place value on the life of a child, then I must oppose any effort to take away the value of that child’s life.

And I should not be opposed when I stand up and declare my belief that every child’s life is of value by cries of ‘intolerance.’

Christians value the principles that Jesus Christ gave us and we should expect Christians to stand up and defend what they believe.

If we want to shout Christians down with statements of intolerance, then we should do the same with every religion, every race, and every sexual orientation. We do not.

Fire Prevention Week focuses on smoke detector care

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express It’s Fire Prevention Week, and it’s time for Canadians everywhere to brush up on their fire prevention knowledge and safety skills.

This year’s fire prevention theme is ‘Working Smoke Detectors Save Lives. Test Yours Every Month!’

Blackfalds Fire Chief Robert Coté said that this message focuses on the importance of maintaining smoke detectors.

In addition to testing smoke detectors once a month and changing batteries twice a year, it is also important to clean smoke alarms once in awhile, said Coté.

“MOST HOUSES, THEY DO NOT REPLACE SMOKE DETECTORS THAT OFTEN.” ROBERT COTÉ “That’s a big thing,” added Coté.

“A lot of people don’t bother cleaning it, just blowing air out of it.”

Coté said cleaning detectors is important because sensors can get dusty and inhibit the detector.

Another thing a lot of people often don’t take into consideration is that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors have life spans, said Coté.

Smoke detectors have a life span of about 10 years. Carbon monoxide detectors, a life span of seven years.

“Most houses, they do not replace smoke detectors that often,” said Coté. If you are unsure of how old your smoke detector is, check for a date on it.

Any detector built in the last decade will have a model number and a date on it. Some even have a sticker that will say ‘replace by’ followed by another date.

It’s not a bad idea to replace smoke detectors a little more

often than once every 10 years either, as frequent false alarms from cooking or smoking indoors can reduce detector life spans as well, said Coté.

To minimize on false alarms and extend the life of your detector, Coté said proper ventilation should be used when cooking anything that is likely to produce some smoke.

Blackfalds Fire Prevention Coordinator Keith Wilson added that it is important for people to stay vigilant to the task at hand while cooking.

“Don’t walk away from something that’s cooking,” said Wilson.

Coté added that several oven fires have been caused by someone putting a frozen pizza in the oven and then falling asleep while sitting on the couch or similar instances. It’s also not a bad idea to have a working fire extinguisher handy in the kitchen in addition to a smoke detector.

They should also be checked regularly to make sure they are still charged (that the arrow is within the green zone) and agitated (to make sure fire extinguishing compounds do not cake).

Once again this year, Blackfalds Fire Department will be holding an open house as part of Fire Prevention Week.

Coté said the open house will follow much the same format as last year’s but will happen the evening of Oct. 8th from 5 to 8 p.m. rather than on the weekend.

Coté said that throughout the week, the fire department will be touring a few groups of children through the hall as well.

Lacombe Fire Chief Ed van Delden said that due to budget and staffing restrictions, Lacombe has little planned in the way of fire prevention events.

However, van Delden said the fire department does plan to distribute the fire safety materials provided by the National Fire Protection Agency.

Volunteer ďŹ re departments need community support

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Residents in communities with volunteer departments need to understand that volunteer means just that.

Lacombe Fire Chief Ed van Delden said that sometimes, volunteer ďŹ re departments lack community support because residents don’t realize what exactly being a volunteer ďŹ reďŹ ghter means. “That means that wherever you are, whatever you are doing, when a tone goes off, you’re essentially dropping whatever (you are doing),â€? said van Delden. van Delden went on to explain that sometimes when tones go off, it is impossible for volunteers to instantly jump in a vehicle and head to the ďŹ re hall.

While the Lacombe Fire Department makes every effort to respond to calls as soon as possible, it is limited by the fact that its members are volunteers. “It isn’t like we are sitting (in the hall) ready to go,� said van Delden.

He added that even when volunteers can drop everything and go right away, they still need to make it from their residences or places of work to the hall, which depending on location can take several minutes. van Delden said that sometimes, response times from dispatch to arrival to a scene even within the

While he said such response times are inevitable with a volunteer department, all the ďŹ reďŹ ghters are also cognizant of what victims of ďŹ re are feeling while the ďŹ re department is en route. “I know what 15 minutes feels like, I know what ďŹ ve minutes feel like,â€? said van Delden. He added that most of the time, when it comes to long response times, ďŹ reďŹ ghters are probably their own worst critics.

Sometimes, long response times aren’t even the fault of the responding department. van Delden said that because dispatchers work with such limited information, it is sometimes difďŹ cult for them to provide sufďŹ cient directions for ďŹ reďŹ ghters to ďŹ nd a scene. van Delden gave an example of one call not too long ago where Lacombe Fire was put on standby for a vehicle ďŹ re where it took several minutes for dispatch to ascertain where the vehicle was located.

FireďŹ ghters were actually in the truck and ready to go before dispatch was able to provide all the necessary information.

Another challenge that volunteer departments face is numbers, said van Delden. Even if ďŹ reďŹ ghters can arrive on-scene within a reasonable time, there still needs to be enough of them to handle the many operations of ďŹ ghting a ďŹ re.

there is a problem with frequent false alarms because of installed alarm systems that automatically contact ďŹ re departments when property owners cannot be contacted.

CotĂŠ said that often, such alarms are caused by the property owners themselves not communicating effectively with alarm companies.

He said it is important that anyone with such an alarm keep all of their contact information up to date and always respond to the alarm company if and when they call because of an accidently tripped alarm.

Consider becoming a volunteer firefighter today There are two points I would like to get across in this week’s column.

VOSSEN First, why it is important to support your local fire department. Second, why you should consider joining a volunteer fire department.

Next week is Fire Prevention Week.

In addition to promoting fire prevention, I feel that Fire Prevention Week should be a time to recognize those we count on when fire prevention is no

longer an option, the firefighters.

Strangely, firefighters don’t always get the respect they deserve in my opinion.

In particular volunteer fire departments seem to lack in support.

Firefighters do an incredibly dangerous job.

Whenever there is a fire and everyone is running out, it is the firefighters who are running in. They risk life and limb at every call for the betterment of the rest of the community.

Nobody, not even a firefighter really, wants to run into a burning building.

But that is what firefighters do and that is why they deserve our support, volunteer or otherwise.

Firefighters put themselves through rigorous training, throw themselves into danger, take time away

from their families and loved ones, are available 24 hours a day and put their lives on the line everyday they are on the job.

Volunteer firefighters do all the same things career firefighters do, with two notable exceptions.

They do these things on top of their full-time jobs and they do these things without expecting any kind of pay.

Yet, sometimes we fail to realize that.

We complain about slow response times and drivers trying to get to the scene in time.

I live quite near Lacombe’s fire hall and I can usually hear the sirens go off when the fire trucks leave the hall on the way to a scene.

I have noticed that, during the late hours of the night, response times from

when the dispatch comes in to when firefighters leave the hall are significantly longer.

That is because those firefighters have just been woken up in the middle of the night by a tone going off and are trying to respond to a call as quickly as possible and getting up in a hurry is hard to do.

It’s not like any of us would respond well if loud noises in the middle of the night demanded that we get out of bed and run into a potentially life-threatening situation with little thought for our own safety.

Both Lacombe and Blackfalds, as well as the surrounding areas, are served by volunteer fire departments.

These departments are made up of dedicated men and women who volunteer

their time to do an incredibly dangerous, yet necessary, job.

And they need volunteers to do this job. It is at this time that I must recommend volunteering at your local fire department if you are able to do so.

It may seem a strange thing to do after I have just explained how difficult being a firefighter, especially a volunteer firefighter can be. But, it is a job that must be done and the effort is well worth it.

I myself have been a volunteer firefighter in the past.

Unfortunately, my life situation has changed so that I am unable to be one currently but I plan on volunteering again should things change again and allow me to do so again.

I can tell you first hand that the camaraderie one can experience as part of a fire

department is second to none.

While it’s very demanding being a volunteer firefighter it’s also a very rewarding experience.

If you are the kind of person who enjoys giving, being a leader and serving the community, you should consider becoming a volunteer firefighter.

It takes a great deal of dedication and support from employers and family but if you can, you should.

Otherwise, who will there be to answer the call when the businesses, homes and people of our community are in danger?

Both Lacombe and Blackfalds have volunteer fire departments that require volunteers to operate.

SPORTS Another season ending for Lacombe golfers

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express It takes a lot of work to keep a golf course in good condition.

Once again, golf season is coming to a close for the year and Lacombe Golf and Country Club is getting things in order to prepare the course for the winter.

CJ Dahl, course superintendent said that maintenance staff is already trying to prepare the course for the off-season so that it is in good shape again come spring.

“Right now we are just mulching leaves and trying to make sure it’s playable every day,” said Dahl.

Dahl added as the season progresses and the grass and other plants begin to enter their dormant state for the winter, it becomes harder to maintain the course to optimal conditions.

“The product we’re offering now isn’t as good as mid-season,” said Dahl. He added the number of players on the course tend to dwindle this time of year as well.

Golfers can help maintain the condition and beauty of the courses they play on with good golf etiquette, said Dahl.

Repairing divots and ball marks as golfers play can significantly improve healing times for course blemishes.

He also said re-seeding divots is preferred to replacing them as it helps get new seed down on the course.

Dahl said without repairing ball marks and divots, those spots on the course will die and will require new seed to grow again. It can change a healing time from a matter of hours to a matter of weeks.

“You will see a lot of little dead spots all over the greens, that’s just another unrepaired ball mark,” said Dahl.

Even if blemishes are repaired an hour after occurring, they will not heal as quickly as if they were repaired immediately after.

Dahl added these effects become more damaging the later the season gets.

“The recuperative capacity is not nearly as good as it is mid-season,” said Dahl.

For now, Dahl and his crew have a long list of objectives to get through in order to prepare the course for winter.

freezing. Last month, maintenance crews had already began winter prep by raising cuts to help plants over winter.

They had also begun mulching leaves so there is less organic surface matter to clean up after the snow melts in the spring.

Once the spring comes next year, Dahl and the rest of maintenance will begin the process again by shoveling remaining snow off greens, removing excess sand, dirt and garbage from the winter melt.

Any of these processes can take a month or more to complete, he added.

On the business side of things, Lacombe Golf and Country Club Head Pro Kevin

Broderson had a late season start because of the long winter and massive amounts of snow, but things didn’t take long to shape up.

“We got off to a slow start obviously, we didn’t come through the winter as we had hoped but by the end of June it was back to the condition we expected it to be in,” said Broderson.

He said the club was down by a few tournaments this year, but did manage to host a leg of the Professional Golf Association of Alberta Player’s Tour.

Growth was also seen in Lacombe Golf and Country Club’s junior program once again, he added.

As far as the pro shop goes, Broderson said the only preparation to get that ready for the off-season is to clear out this year’s stock.

Once that’s done, the pro shop begins ordering new stock for next year and planning the next year’s tournaments.

Broderson also said the club is looking at doing some fundraising for the golf course as well.

He said no definite plans have been made yet and fundraisers may not even happen, but some ideas are currently being thrown around. news@lacombeexpress.com

‘Football Day’ celebrates the sport in Lacombe

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Lacombe Culture and Harvest Festival wasn’t the only big annual event going on last weekend.

At MEGlobal Field, football fans, players and coaches from Lacombe and elsewhere gathered for the annual Football Day event.

“Football Day was amazing,” said Riley Quance, who coaches both the Pee Wee Explosion and the Lacombe Composite High School Rams football teams.

“The turnout, the fans, the parking lot was full, the stands were full, the atmosphere was extremely exciting.”

Quance added Football Day is an event designed to celebrate football and share it with the entire community.

“Football has come a long way in the community not only since the field was built but just in general,” said Quance. “This is just a way for the community to celebrate those successes from the atom teams right through to the high school.”

While Football Day is meant to be a day where all of Lacombe’s football teams play, the Rams did not play as part of Football Day this year as they were on a by-week.

Raider’s coach Darren Gagnon said Football Day has been around for a long time, at least since he started coaching nine years ago.

“I think it’s been going on forever,” said Gagnon.

“It was going on long before me.”

Gagnon said Football Day started with the Rams and Raiders playing on the same day. As the football programs in Lacombe grew, the Explosion and Chargers started playing as well.

“I think it’s a chance for a bunch of people to get out in Lacombe and get to see a great sport,” said Gagnon.

Quance said the Football Day event is advantageous to all Lacombe’s football community as a whole.

“What I think it does is it helps minor football as a whole realize that we’re not separate teams, we’re more one big family,” said Quance. “The more we can work together and collaborate as coaches and staff the better off our kids are going to be because we are going to be able to give them a consistent message right from eight years old right through to 18 years old.”

“Everybody has an opportunity to participate and excel,” said Quance.

“We also have the understanding that one person, no matter how good they are, in the world of football cannot do it on their own.”

Teamwork is promoted on and off the field by minor football, said Quance.

He added the hope of minor football is that players be able to use the skills they learn on the field in other facets of life as well.

“The number one goal of all the programs is to make productive citizens,” said Quance. “Minor football has been working extremely hard to ensure that happens.”

Quance went on to say everyone involved with minor football, not just players and coaches are necessary for this process.

He said everyone who works behind the scenes is vital as they ensure the business of minor football is taken care of and these opportunities continue to exist in Lacombe.

“The people behind the scenes that aren’t on the field coaching are as important if not more important,” said Quance.

He said he would like to see other groups who make use of the MEGlobal Field facility have their own sports days as well.

Fall Extravaganza brings new pieces to Gallery on Main Annual local art show and sale set to kick off on the morning of Oct. 24th

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Fall is an exciting time of change at the Gallery on Main as owner Laverne Jones brings in hundreds of new pieces each year during her Fall Extravaganza event.

Twice a year, the gallery receives a complete overhaul with new paintings, stained glass pieces, pottery and sculptures. On Oct. 24th, residents will be welcomed into the opening reception marking the official fall changeover.

“I never know exactly how many new pieces are coming, but it is always over 200 and up to 500,” said Jones.

“I JUST WANT PEOPLE TO COME AND LOOK AT THE NEW ART. THE WHOLE GALLERY CHANGES OUT AND IT’S SO EXCITING. PEOPLE KNOW THAT I WILL MOVE PAINTINGS AROUND TO FILL THE EMPTY SPACES AND KEEP THE GALLERY FULL, SO THERE IS LOTS TO SEE.” LAVERNE JONES “Every artist likes to participate because they have their own specific section and they like to keep that section full. Gallery goers will be able to enjoy live music throughout the weekend from Uncle John & The Traveler, a duo based out of Lacombe and Lethbridge who will be playing something of a weekend-long reunion show.

“My favourite thing about the Extravaganza is just the new art that’s coming in.

Jones likes to constantly update her gallery and keep it as full as possible, which she does throughout the year with particular artist shows each month or so and two

major changeovers in the year. The October event brings in the art for the fall and winter months that remains at the gallery until May. There is no admittance price so it is free to come and meander through the gallery.

However, there will be hundreds of canvases, sculptures, frames, pottery creations and more for sale.

“I just want people to come and look at the new art.

“The whole gallery changes out and it’s so exciting. People know that I will move paintings around to fill the empty spaces and keep the gallery full, so there is lots to see,” said Jones.

From 1,600 to 400 calories in 40,000 years How can we help to improve the health care system in this country? Politicians and others continue to debate this issue. They always conclude that more money is the answer. But this approach is doomed to failure. How can it work when it’s taken 40,000 years for humans to get into such horrible shape? How did it happen? And is there a solution?

Dr. Barry Bogin is a professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan. He says we all envision our Paleolithic ancestors as being short, bent-over people with small brains.

Actually, they were a tad taller with brains as large as ours. And if alive today they would not require hospitalization for so much degenerative disease.

Admittedly, most stoneage people did not live as long as today’s North Americans. Large numbers died hunting animals or from infection due to lack of antibiotics. Others suffered terrible deaths from childbirth, but the ones that escaped these problems did not, later in life,

JONES face cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension or obesity, all today’s big killers.

What protected them?

Ironically, it was the things they lacked that saved them. Three meals a day were never guaranteed so they had to continually exert themselves to ďŹ nd food.

Dr. Bogin reports that today most people expend only 400 calories to complete the day’s chores.

Cars, television sets and computers don’t burn up calories. Stone-age people lost 1,600 calories hunting and gathering food. This, along with the absence of fast-food outlets and supermarkets, kept them thin, a major factor in preventing degenerative disease.

Nutritional anthropologists can pinpoint what

stone-age people ate by analyzing their bones and fossilized human waste. And how their nutrition safeguarded them from certain diseases.

Possibly their major protection was the lack of sugar. The only source of pure sugar was honey, not easy to get, and only available in certain areas a few months of the year. Today, we consume 20 teaspoons of sugar daily which translates into 146,000 calories a year and 42 lbs of body fat if it’s not burned up by exercise.

What’s beyond belief is that Americans now eat more reďŹ ned sugar in a single day than stone-age people ate in a lifetime!

One reason why stone-age people were free of cavities.

Stone-age people also lacked excessive sodium.

They consumed about 1,000 milligrams of sodium daily.

Today, we use from 4,000 to 6,000 mg every day mostly from supermarket foods.

One reason why hypertension is a leading cause of death.

Paleolithic man had phenomenal good luck. He consumed up to 150 grams

of ďŹ ber daily due to a diet rich in plant food. This triggered large soft stools, prevented constipation, diverticulitis and possibly colon cancer. North Americans consume a mere15 grams daily of ďŹ ber.

Dr. Bogin says they were also not exposed to saturated fats, the type linked to coronary disease. It’s estimated that the American public devours 200 hamburgers every second!

Paleo’s didn’t eat signiďŹ -

cant amounts of saturated fat even in areas where game was abundant. The bison, who roamed the prairies, were thin, and what fat they contained was largely unsaturated fat. In fact, Dr. Bogin claims some of their fat was omega-3 fatty acids, the kind found in ďŹ sh.

Paleolithic people also escaped osteoporosis. This, in spite of the fact that cows and goats were not herded for dairy products.

But their plant foods were

so high in calcium that they averaged 1,900 milligrams of calcium a day.

We can learn from our ancient ancestors by eating whole wheat bread, bran cereals, adding more fruit and vegetables to our diet, drinking milk, and above all, saying no to drinks laden with sugar. And if we rise out of our chairs more often, maybe we can then control escalating costs in health care.

Preparing your home as autumn leads to winter Ahhh fall!

Time to bring out the pretty scarves and boots and feel the crunch of leaves under your feet as you take those last few walks before white is on the ground. I can’t remember a more beautiful fall season in Red Deer and we have been so blessed with warm temperatures and colourful leaf displays that seem to be sticking around!

If we believe the media, fall is for nothing more than wearing jaunty trench coats, kicking up crispy leaves as we sip a pumpkin spiced latte while walking our golden lab puppies. No? That isn’t what you do everyday? Don’t try to tell me that fall symbolizes yard clean-up and home preparation!

While I am writing this I will remind all of you, make an appointment today to get your snow tires put on and save yourself the headache and lineups when the first snow sticks....you are welcome! The day is already here when we need to clean up flowerbeds and put away summer tools

in favour of shovels and snow blowers. It is time to search your car for that elusive snow brush that has slid under your car seat at some point during the warmer weather.

That container of mitts and scarves is around somewhere and it is a good idea to dig those out now before you are trying to find them on a super rushed morning.

Remember that with the cooler temperatures outside, little critters will be looking for a way inside. Adjust the habit of leaving doors open to your home, even to just rush in quickly for an item.

Mice can get in quicker than you can say ‘coffee refill’ and suddenly you have a host of house guests you had no intention of

entertaining. Now is also the perfect time to go around your home and seal up holes and possible entrances for the not welcome furry friends. Before the snow piles up against your house it is a good idea to inspect the foundation and windows for possible damage.

While the weather is temperate it is a good idea to clean out window tracks, wash the outside of the home and possibly have your carpet and upholstery steam cleaned. It is a good idea to have soft items thoroughly steam cleaned before the house is officially closed in for colder temperatures.

Spring and summer are so lovely as you can open the windows wide and allow beautiful breezes

to blow through but once winter hits and we batten down the hatches the air inside is trapped and the cleaner the indoor fabrics are the more improved your air quality will be.

Cozy up everyone and give your house a little seasonal love and attention. Then you can settle into your cozy slippers and warm blankets as you dream of Christmas cheer and watch your favourite seasonal movies knowing that your home is secure, dry and ready for winter. Enjoy each season in every way possible even if it requires a bit of home maintenance here and there.
