PADDLING: Vanderhoof celebrated BC Rivers Day on Sunday Sept. 28 with a free barbecue in Riverside Park accompanied by numerous booths about Vanderhoof’s cherished rivers, paddling demonstrations in the Nechako waters, and games for the kids. “These kinds of initiatives only get legs when people in the community get involved.

[This idea] came from a pile of people who are just coming together now,” said Mayor Gerry Thiessen.

Orlanthia Habsburg, 34, a single mom of three boys who moved from Fraser Lake last year, is one of the dedicated parents pushing for the park. Ever since arriving in Vanderhoof it has been one of her

personal missions to have a skatepark put in.

“I thought there was one here but when we moved I realized there wasn’t and my son got mad at me,” joked Ms. Habsburg. “It was such a long summer with

school being out, so my middle son Josh 11, has been skateboarding all around. I don’t know where he goes and that’s the problem.”

In the past, the idea to build a skatepark fell flat because the town

had trouble identifying people who would use the park. Within the last year, those people have made themselves known, said Mayor Thiessen. Ms. Habsburg being one of them, has taken initiative to spear-

head a committee welcoming anyone interested. In full support, the District has so far met with the group twice to discuss what kinds of things the park should have.

Youth that attended the meeting felt the park needs beginner and intermediate level elements and should include components such as bowels, half pipes, euro gaps, rails and steps. The size of the park was also talked about. Participants felt the park in Fraser Lake was too small and lacked a variety of skill levels, and that the park in Prince George is a much better size, at 10,000 square feet.

Possible places for the park were mentioned as Riverside Park, Ferland Park, beside the arena, the old baseball diamonds, and by the museum. Ideal locations were suggested as by the arena or behind

the municipal office. A general consensus was that the park should be in a public location to keep the park safe, and not in a residential area because of noise concerns.

Some other concerns have been that the park will cater to a certain crowd.

“There used to be a stereotype that skateboarders cause trouble, but these kids just want to hone their skills,” said Ms. Habsburg.

“Bad things happen everywhere so parents should be talking to their kids about what they can and can’t do.

Some kids do hockey, some kids do soccer, some skateboard and, it’s truly amazing what

some of these kids can do on a skateboard.”

Some folks have asked Ms. Habsburg why her efforts are not geared toward the community pool.

“That project needs millions and millions.

A loud and lengthy train whistle has repeatedly caused latenight disturbances for some Vanderhoof residents living close to the tracks. Despite the fact that the train whistle represents a warning, some folks still find it to be intrusive.

“I know they are trying to be safe but some conductors are just rude about it. They should be considerate to people who live close by. Some hold it down all the way through town and it wakes me up where I’m sitting straight up in bed,” said Nadina Raphael, 19, who lives by the Country Pub on Church Street.

There is however a reason such a loud horn is used. According to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, BC railways see an average of six trespasser fatalities and two crossing fatalities each year. Across Canada, 127 people died in 2013 on CN railways, which is why CN employees must go through extensive safety training and continually adhere to safe practises. Is CUPE running your city hall?

Tom Fletcher Black Press The big story at this year’s Union of B.C. Municipalities convention was a report commissioned by the B.C. government that reveals municipal pay increases for unionized staff have been running at twice the rate of provincial raises.

When I asked Premier Christy Clark about the intent of this report, leaked just before the annual UBCM convention, she was blunt. It’s to get this issue onto the agenda for the November municipal elections, which the province has decreed shall be for four-year terms instead of three. After local elections, discussions with surviving and incoming municipal politicians will resume.

Things have been going pretty well for the main municipal union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, for the last couple of decades. As local election turnout has gone from bad to worse, municipal employees themselves have become an increasingly dominant voting bloc.

Then there are the “labour councils” in urban centres, now almost entirely fronts for public sector unions. They quietly survey council candidates to determine their level of affection for ever-growing public payrolls, and dole out campaign funds accordingly. Sometimes they organize full slates, with cuddly names like “Protect Coquitlam” to appeal to low-information voters.

During last week’s convention in Whistler, I caught up to Finance Minister Mike de Jong in a brief break from the dozens of meetings cabinet ministers have with mayors, councillors and regional directors.

Is the province going to impose some kind of solution?

“There’s not some hidden legislative agenda,” de Jong replied.

More data needs to be gathered, and the report shows ongoing problems with management salaries at the provincial level as well.

Is this the first step to imposing a tight-fisted centralized bargaining agency, such as the government set up last year to wrestle the B.C. Teachers’ Federation to the ground?

“We haven’t formulated our answer,” de Jong said. “What the data does suggest, however, is that there may well be some merit [to centralized bargaining]. One of the recommendations points to a more coordinated approach to some of the negotiations that take place.”

Will the new municipal auditor general have a role in this?

“The purpose of the auditor was not to become an enforcement mechanism,” de Jong said. “It was to play a traditional audit function on whether taxpayers are getting value for money. To that extent I suppose a municipal auditor might be able to comment on the advantages of coordinating efforts.”

called it “one-sided, politically motivated, shoddy work” designed to embarrass local politicians on the eve of their elections.

Did he question Ernst and Young’s numbers, the pay increases for municipal union staff of 38 per cent between 2001 and 2012, compared to 19 per cent for unionized provincial staff? Did he question their calculation that over

that period, inflation totalled 23 per cent? No. The facts being against him, he went with an emotional pitch to distract from them.

Recall that during the final days of the teachers’ strike, Horgan suddenly decided that what was really needed was binding arbitration.

This was 24 hours after the teachers’ union took that position.

So there’s the big question to be

considered by voters as local elections draw near. Which candidates are looking out for your interests, and which ones are working on behalf of CUPE? There’s another troubling trend in manipulation of local government that was more evident than ever at the 2014 UBCM convention. I’ll discuss that in a future column.

Enbridge’s new round of advertising Dear Editor, We are about to face yet another barrage of Enbridge Northern Gateway pipelines advertisements.

The last round had glitzy nature photos and poems which ran in various newspapers including the Caledonia Courier. It is still pretty fresh in my mind, certainly not because they shed a positive light on the pipelines project as Enbridge thought they would.

The most outrageous ad in my opinion was The western red cedar-- “It’s lived here for hundreds of years. It should live for hundreds more. And not make way for a pipeline.” Shortly after those ads ran Enbridge’s contracted crews, executing provincial-issued investigative permits, cut down ancient cedars in Haisla traditional territory near Kitimat. Fourteen of the trees destroyed had been culturally modified in some way by the Haisla people; living evidence of their his-

tory years before British Columbia became a colony.

Now, they are getting personal. In presenting their new “Life Takes Energy” advertising campaign to the Financial Post last week, the company said “when people’s energy and Enbridge’s energy meet beautiful things happen, whether that is a baby’s first bath, a car ride with your dog, an unforgettable dinner or the trip of a lifetime, all these amazing moments that define our quality of life, Enbridge is there in a small way”.

Enbridge Northern Gateway’s web site ad states “We understand that your life takes energy. And we are proud to bring it to you.”

I find myself wondering, is Enbridge Northern Gateway proud of the large part they are playing in Mother Earth’s suffering?

Becoming a BC hunter

Hunting can be an individual passion or something passed down from generation to generation but, despite your skill level, there is always a possibility of hurting someone.

Ross Davidson, a master instructor who teaches the Canadian Firearm Safety Course throughout the Nechako Region, says there used to be a high number of people getting shot during hunting season but those numbers have dwindled since he began teaching the course.

“People were mistaking Johnny Smith for Bullwinkle and now instead of flying by the seat of their pants, people are going out and learning the proper way being taught by professionals.

You can’t shoot a moose without a gun and you can’t possess a gun without a Possession and Acquisition License,” said Mr. Davidson.

To acquire a gun legally in Canada a person needs a PAL License. To get a PAL you must pass the Canadian Firearm Safety Course, which consists of approximately 12 hours of in class learning and a practical exam to show the instructor that you know how to safely handle a gun. You are also required to submit your spouses name so

The CORE course is offered at the CNC in Fort St. James and

Vanderhoof in the fall and is a provincial educational tool for persons aged 10 and up interested in hunting.

The program is a 23 to 26 hour course teaching participants about conservation, ethics, laws and regulations, outdoor survival, firearm safety, and identifying animals.

“Knowing what an animal looks like is one of the most important parts of hunting,” says Mr. Davidson. “Provincial and Federal regulations tell hunters exactly what they can hunt and it is the hunters job to identify the animal before they shoot.”

Hunting is also regulated in accordance to regions the land falls under.

Each region is cut into management units and has its own rules and boundaries. Within those boundaries hunters are allowed to hunt certain game at certain times with certain methods. All the regulations can be found in the BC Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis, which stays current for two years. This hunter’s bible can be found at the hardware store where tags and licenses can also be purchased.

NKDF Board Member Recruitment Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society (NKDF) is currently seeking volunteers to serve on the Board of Directors. Promotion of this recruitment involves sending this notice to all MLA’s, local governments and economic development organizations, as well as advertizing in the local newspapers in the NKDF investment area.

We will use a point-based system to evaluate applicants and create an eligibility list. This list will be sent to the Board Resourcing and Development Office and the Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training, who makes the final decisions and appoints Directors to the NKDF Board.

There is currently one vacancy on the Board. Each director is normally appointed to a term of one to three years.

Vanderhoof RCMP have been receiving an increasing number of calls with people complaining about explosion noise. “People are used to gun shots but what they’re hearing is loud bangs that aren’t guns,” said Corporal Thiessen. “They are exploding targets, and from my understanding, are the size of a pop can, that when shot explodes, so the gunman knows they hit the target.” With open season

Nechako Notes

4-H summer

wrap-up report Fort St James 4-H Club wrapped up our summer with a camp out at the Cinnabar Research Station. We celebrated a great year and it was even warm enough for us to swim, kayak and go tubing on the lake. It was nice to relax around a campfire after all our hard work. We will be finishing the 4-H year with awards night in Vanderhoof on October 3rd.

Congratulations to all our members for their achievements this year!

This year’s fair wouldn’t have been possible without help from local businesses. Bam Bam Trucking Ltd and ABC Recycling gave a generous $400 donation. Conifex Timber Inc. donated $360 in exchange for face painting at their family events. Finally, Cottonwood Marina, Al Millsap and the public of Fort St. James donated returnables.

Huckleberry Mines Ltd., an 19,000 TPD open pit copper/molybdenum mine located 121 kilometers south of Houston in west central British Columbia, commenced operation in September 1997; a recent expansion has extended the mine life to 2021. We are currently recruiting for the following position:

SITE SERVICES TEAM

Reporting to the Site Services Supervisor, the successful candidate will be part of the Site Services Team which is responsible for the repair and upkeep of a 300 person camp and mine site buildings and infrastructure. Duties include camp maintenance, industrial piping including HDPE process lines and pump maintenance, welding and fabricating and some equipment operating (loaders and excavators).

The successful candidate must possess a journeyman’s trade qualiŵcation and have a minimum of ŵve years experience in an industrial environment. Preference will be given to applicants with mining experience and individuals who are also licensed or experienced in welding. Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential for this position.

Huckleberry Mines is a remote mine where its employees live in a camp environment on their days of work. The work schedule for these position 7 x 7 (7 days on, 7 days off). Transportation to and from the mine site is provided and while at the mine site all meals and accommodations are provided free of charge to employees.
