Come and play in Cumberland Earle Couper Record Staff Cumberland's Village Park is set to become a major recreation centre in the Comox Valley.

The Village Park Master Plan, approved by Cumberland council in April 2013, includes a skateboard park and a bike jump park along with a new play structure, new field house and washroom facility, a basketball hoop and tennis court.

The plan was approved after a public meeting, a survey and emails that got the community involved and excited about the direction the park is heading.

Kevin McPhedran, parks and outdoor recreation co-ordinator with the Village of Cumberland, says there is great community enthusiasm for both projects, and fundraising and planning are continuing.

More details on when construction will begin will be available as the fundraising nears its target and design plans are finalized.

The Cumberland Community Schools Society's Skatepark Committee is assisting the Village of Cumberland to deliver a 6,000-7,000 square foot skatepark by the end of summer 2015 at a cost of $250,000-$300,000. The skatepark will occupy the space currently used by the basketball court and one of the tennis courts. A new basketball area will replace the existing one.

"This is a community-based design where a skatepark consulting company comes in and we get anybody in the community that's interested in putting forth their ideas of what a skatepark should look like, and then they take all those ideas and create a custom skatepark for Cumberland," says Skatepark

Committee chair Cam Matthews.

Matthews says a skatepark in Cumberland would be a great way to keep kids active, noting skateboards cost only $100 to $200 to purchase. "The skatepark addresses a group of kids that potentially come from families that can't afford to put them into expensive sports like hockey or mountain biking," continues Matthews.

"One of the ultimate goals is not only to have the amenity in Cumberland, but to also have programs in place for the kids — like skateboarding, scootering and BMXing programs — so that kids that would otherwise not have that coach/mentor in their life, have an opportunity for that."

Meanwhile, the United Riders of Cumberland (UROC) is working with the Village of Cumberland to build a bike jump park in Village Park. The vision of the park is to create a facility that complements Cumberland’s mountain bike trails and helps riders develop the skills they need to master those trails in a safe and controlled environment.

The park is planned to be constructed in multiple phases. Phase One will focus on the dirt features of the park (jumps, berms, and pump tracks) while other features may be installed in the future.

UROC has enlisted the help of local dirt jumper Adam Dyke and his company, Rythm Bike Parks, to assist in the design.

The goal of the park is to develop core riding skills of cornering and jumping by utilizing a pump trackstyle design. The park will feature two lines – one for beginners/intermediate riders and one for interme-

Inking an international reputation Scott Stanfield Record Staff Vancouver Island Tattoo and Body Piercing has moved a few doors down to a bigger and brighter location at the corner of Dunsmuir and Second.

Operating a few months at the new locale, shop owner Sean Bergstrom serves customers both local and from out of town — some even from out of country.

“I get guys coming from Kuwait oil rigs, Edmonton, Vancouver. They just come from everywhere,” said Bergstrom, who had worked in Quesnel before relocating to the Island. He has been in Cumberland about six years.

“After 22 years, banging out one, two, three or four tattoos a day depending on the season, you touch a lot of people and a lot of skin. Once you’ve been in it that long, then their kids are getting tattoos.”

The shop is also staffed by piercer Sheila Hennessey and Conrad Berglund of Winnipeg, who as of late had been working alongside Kurt Wiscombe, an acclaimed name in the tattoo industry.

They offer some stunning and unique works of art — mastered in the flesh, so to speak.

“Mostly original it seems these days where people come in with requests, wanting something built to suit their eclectic needs,” Bergstrom said, noting “all walks of life” walk through the front door.

“You just never know what’s under someone’s sleeves. It’s the people you’d never expect who have the most beautiful collections of work.”

Some customers are seasoned veterans, boasting years of ink work from around the world, while others “wander in nervously” looking for that first tattoo.

“The wave (of tattooing) has crested,” Bergstrom said. “It helps with having TV shows, they put it into prime time. And there’s a slew of magazines. The supply industry alone is staggering. I used to order from one company out east. Now there’s hundreds to order from.

“It’s permanent, but it’s only around with that person, so it’s sort of a renewing art form,” he added. “It seems to have growth phases, and getting bigger and bigger.

More people, more skin, more exposure, but then there’s more tattoo artists.

It’s a double-edged sword, I suppose.”

Hammering out a niche market in the crate business Scott Stanfield Record Staff Since establishing the Cumberland Crate Company last winter, Archie Pateman and Roderick Lane have been filling orders for stores, vineyards, bakeries, cafes, bike shops, U-brews and boutiques from Campbell River to Victoria.

The longtime friends have tapped into a niche market, bridging the gap between pricey antique crates and short-lived plastic ones.

“It’s a steady, upward swing,” Pateman, a musician, said out of his homebased Studio 10 in Cumberland.

They use lodgepole pine, douglas fir and cedar to build crates, which can be used to house record collections or store favourite bottles of wine, among other uses.

“There’s a lot of stuff out

in this world that needs to be put in a box,” said Lane, who lives on a farm in Forbidden Plateau.

“They’re non-toxic,” Pateman added. “We have a new line on wood. Our boxes are locally grown, locally milled and locally made. We’re using all Vancouver Island wood at this point.”

Pateman and Lane met several years ago while tree-planting in northern B.C. Their business idea took shape when Lane needed wooden farm crates.

“Then everybody else realized they needed them, too,” Pateman said.

They have attached names to their product, which comes in a variety of sizes. The standard farm crate is called Farmer Rod while a small farm crate is Little Rod. The biggest is the Old Funk record crate.

There’s also the Boozy Ben wine and beer crate,

the Fancy Frannie standard household tray, the Fast Eddie everything tray and Funk Jr., which is designed to hold legal document-sized folders.

Pateman and Lane are also working on a movie star line, a specialty crate that could be out in time for Christmas. They’re thinking of calling it Brad’s Pitt, which Pateman quips would be the deepest crate.

Their product have made its way into more than 40 stores in B.C., mostly on the Island. They have yet to suss out the market in Vancouver.

Besides filling custom orders, the business offers an installation service for displaying goods with their crates.

The Rotary Club of Cumberland Centennial is in partnership with the Village of Cumberland to renovate the Village Park Playground.

This was our major community project last year.

List of community projects completed and in progress since the Rotary Club of Cumberland Centennial was chartered in 2005: · Thermal imaging camera for the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department ($13,000) · Distribution of ten portable Automated Electronic Defibrillators to several locations in the Comox Valley ($25,000) · Purchase and installation of two transit shelters for the Village of Cumberland ($17,500) · Provision of resources to Cumberland Elementary School and Royston elementary School for their literacy programs ($8500)

· Donation of $30,000 to the Comox Valley Hospice Society · Purchase and installation of a number of bike racks in the Village ($3000) · Refurbishment of a number of the unique coal cart benches in Cumberland with donated cedar and bolts. Club purchased paint at a nominal cost · Purchase of a special wheelchair to provide Cumberland Lodge Residents access to and egress from swimming pools ($2,000)

· Donation of $13,500 to Jeneece Place · Establishment of a library and bookcases to the residents of the Cumberland Lodge ($1,000) – books donated at no cost · Irrigation system for flower garden at Cumberland Lodge ($500) · Start up money and help with operating funds for Cumberland Marching Band ($2,000) · Sponsorship of a number of students to attend different youth activities ($5000)

· Establishment of a partnership with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library providing a book per month to 90 children in Cumberland under five years of age until they start school ($40 per child per year) · Community project to be completed this year in partnership with the Village of Cumberland will be the refurbishment of the Village Park Playground by replacing the old equipment with new and making the playground universally accessible – the club has committed $80,000 as its share.
