Oil pipeline opposition call fails at UBCM annual convention

Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski and Councillor Sharon Cross voting electronically at the UBCM convention. Jeff Nagel B.C. municipal leaders have narrowly

$5.4-billion oil pipeline twinning. The issue went to an electronic vote Thursday at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention after a show of hands was too close to call. The final vote was 49.3 per cent in favour of the resolution and 50.7 per cent opposed. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said the pipeline project – which would triple the size of a tank farm near homes in Burnaby and result in a sevenfold increase in oil tanker traffic through Burrard Inlet – is too risky. He also argued the federal government has no strategy to maxi-

mize jobs in Canada by ensuring bitumen is refined here instead of in China. “The risks of increasing oil tanker traffic are all to the down side for the B.C. coast,” said Islands Trust chair Sheila Malcolmson. “We get no benefit, there’s no refining, no jobs for us, our salmon industry’s at risk, our tourism industry is at risk and our first reponders who would be on the front lines are at risk.” But delegates from communities along the Thompson River said they fear a surge in oil tanker trains will run on the rail line through the region if the 60-yearold Kinder Morgan

pipeline is not twinned to carry oil sands bitumen from Alberta. “That can be used to move oil and there are no restrictions at all,” Clearwater Mayor John Harwood said. Thompson-Nicola Regional District director Tim Pennell argued the current cleanup response capability for a marine oil spill is very limited in the Vancouver area and the Trans Mountain project would bring a “huge improvement.” After the vote, Corrigan said he was disappointed but insisted the split vote still sends a “strong message” of concern from B.C. civic leaders. He said opposition

came mainly from selfinterested rural B.C. delegates who are worried about increased oil-by-rail shipments and who greatly outnumber urban representatives at UBCM. “It shows the scare tactic that’s been put out by these companies has worked,” Corrigan said. “They’ve said they’re going to do it regardless, whether it goes by pipeline or by rail.” But one of the ‘no’ votes came from one of Burnaby’s closest neighbours – Belcarra mayor Ralph Drew – who said rural communities are right to fear oil trains. “We have to face the reality that the oil is

Kimberley on receiving the Wood Works BC award. “We are proud to have played a key role in the design and construction of the Mark Creek Bridge. We would like to thank City Staff and Council for their support on this project.” “The City purchased the three wooden bridges to enhance Kimberley’s streetscapes, and as part of a $50,000 Enabling Accessibility Fund grant to improve accessibility for people with disabilities,” said Mayor Ron McRae. Tyee was awarded the contract for $136,761 to build the bridges and the City spent another $3,977 in labour and materials on the accessible approaches. The end result was $30,246 for each bridge locat-

ed over Mark Creek at St. Mary’s Avenue, Marysville Falls and McKenzie Street. The improved accessibility ramp and entrance to City Hall is also being funded through a separate grant from the Enabling Accessibility Fund. The City of Kimberley would like to see more improvements in regards to accessibility and is encouraging small businesses to apply for the federal Enabling Accessibility grants for up to $50,000 to improve workplace accessibility. More information can be found on their web site at www.esdc.gc.ca/ eng/disability/eaf/workplace.shtml. Deadline for grant applications is October 1st.

Appreciate your local newsie on Newspaper Carrier Day by Brian Coombs This coming week of October 5 to 11 is National Newspaper Week and while that is important to us here at the Advertiser, it also gives us the chance to salute some of the hardest working people in the industry— the carriers. Carriers stem from all walks of life, from young people walking

a route to earn some extra dollars to adults who earn a decent living on multiple routes. On the last day of National Newspaper Week, the day is set aside to honour your local newspaper carrier. Whether it is a young person or an adult delivering your paper, all of the carriers face the same types of dangers, frustrations and joys that stem from

delivering a product to your door. Carriers deliver during horrible snow and rain storms, struggling to get the paper to your home while keeping it dry. They also have to face the occasional overzealous guard dog and occasionally, the overzealous guard deer, (especially during rutting season,) Of course, the same carrier can also enjoy

getting out and about on a great summer day, the occasional chit-chat with friendly residents and the occasional holiday tip. But probably the most important reason to celebrate Newspaper Carrier Day is for what these workers actually mean to your life. We used to send handwritten letters. We used to have door-to-door salespeople and there

was even a time, in not too distant memory, when the grocer would come to your home for your food order. A newspaper carrier comes to your home and essentially places our product in your hands. That newspaper isn’t a blurb on a website seen by invisible millions, it is yours. Without getting out of your bathrobe, you can peruse the news of

the day, check out bargains, or even use it as convenient firestarter because it is yours to do with as you please. In this age of six-second transitory videos, here one minute and gone the next celebrities and shopping without leaving your computer, it is comforting to know that there is a tradition out there that continues. So on October 11 (or

anytime during the week of October 5 to 11) be sure to let your local newsie know that you appreciate them. Of course, letting them know you appreciate them year round can’t hurt either.

Fisher Peak Camping & Trailer Rentals recently held a 48 hour facebook contest, where some lucky person/family would be chosen, based on their facebook comment, for a 2-night Arrive & Enjoy Carefree Camping Adventure at Kimberley Riverside Campground, trailer delivered & set up, fully outfitted, with slide & bunks, BBQ package and sun shelter. All they had to do was “Arrive & Enjoy”. Fisher Peak chose a Grandma, Grandpa and their 2 grandsons from Cranbrook. (From left) Chris, Josh, Kathryn and Samuel Casimer. The fall weather was fabulous for them, they had a blast and the kids said it was “Way better than anything!”

Hazardous waste round up sees 450 participants in the RDEK Submitted Over 450 people took part in the RDEK’s Household Hazardous Waste Round Ups around the region over the weekend. “It was great to see the participation in the event and even better to know that we were able to get some of these toxic materials out of people’s basements and off for proper disposal and recycling,” says RDEK Communications

Manager, Loree Duczek. “From a jar of mercury that had been kicking around since the mid 60’s to more common paints and household cleaners, we had a steady stream of people dropping off items over the weekend.” Round Ups were held in Fernie and Invermere on Saturday and in Cranbrook on Sunday. “We had about 100 people at both Invermere and Fernie, and closer to

300 in Cranbrook,” says Duczek. “These events take an incredible amount of organizing and we could not have done it without the assistance of Newalta’s team of hazardous waste experts and Product Care.” This is the first time the Household Hazardous Waste Round Ups have been organized by the RDEK. “The goal in having a Round Up like this is to provide people with an option to get rid of those

Could wearing a weight belt while working out hinder your performance as an athlete?

First a little anatomy: the abdominal wall is composed of numerous muscles such as the Rectus Abdominus (6 pack), the Internal and External Obliques and the Transverse Abdominus (deepest abdominal muscle). When you bend over to lift a weight, your abdominal wall and your back muscles activate. If your body is functional, your abdominal muscles will flex your spine, and in the mean time, your Transverse Abdominus, Internal Obliques and Latissimus Dorsii (big back muscle) will create an Aurélie extension force in your lumbar Wiedemann region (L2-L5) that stabilizes and protects your back.* When you wear a weight belt, you are creating pressure and strength by pushing your abdominals against the belt. However, the only way to activate your Transverse Abdominus – which is a huge stabilizer of the back as explained above – is by pulling the belly button IN! Consequently when a weight belt is worn the body gets used to NOT activate the Transverse Abdominus at all. This works fine as long as you keep wearing your weight belt during workouts, but as soon as you remove it and try to lift as as much as when wearing it, you can seriously injure your back because your body doesn’t know how to stabilize it at all! For example: if you can squat 120lbs with a weight belt and can only squat 100lbs without it, you have a 20% deficit due to stabilizer weakness. Knowing that the Transverse Abdominus is an important stabilizer of the back, but also a stabilizer of the shoulder girdle, head, neck and lower extremities (through its connection with the Thoracolumbar fascia), it would be unwise for an athlete to wear a weight belt while working out. That’s because the belt would inhibit the Transverse Abdominus and prevent them from integrating their muscles from top to bottom. This key stabilizer is of foremost importance if you want your muscle chain to work properly while practicing any sport, whether you are an amateur or a professional athlete. The extension force created through the lumbar spine is possible only because all the muscles mentioned (Transverse Abdominus, Internal Obliques and Latissius Dorsii) all have fibers inserting in a big sheet of connective tissue called Thoracolumber fascia. Through this connection, they pull on the spinous processes of L2L3 and L4-L5, thus stabilizing the spine during flexion. ** This article has been inspired by Paul Chek’s brilliant course “Scientific Core Conditioning”

Meditation as Medicine

It is common knowledge that diet, exercise, regular sleep and healthy lifestyle habits make us feel better and reduce the frequency of, and help treat, all types of illnesses. What would you say if I wrote that sitting still and doing nothing is equally, if not more, powerful as a way to feel energetic and stay healthy? Meditation is becoming widely popular not only as a lifestyle choice but also as an adjunct to conventional and alternative medical therapies. It has been studied in groups of people with a wide variety of illnesses and found to be helpful in everything from cancer to depression. The clinical effects of meditation impact a broad range of physical and psychological symptoms including reduced anxiety, chronic pain, enhanced mood and self-esteem and decreases stress. If you are healthy and want to stay that way meditation can be a powerful part of your daily self-care regime. Meditation, put simply,

There are many styles of meditation practice. The one I use focuses on paying attention to body sensations or emotions. For example, just paying attention to the in-flow and out-flow of your breath can be a meditative practice. Sit comfortably in a quiet place bring all your attention to your nose. See if you can actually sense the temperature and movement of air moving in and out through your nose. If you sit like this for as little as 10 minutes a day it can be calming and revitalizing. In our busy, hectic modern lives we do a lot. In fact, most of us do so much we leave little time for being. Meditation is one way to take time to be and in the process make your life healthier and more enjoyable.

OCTOBER OCTOBER 9, 9, 2014 2014 REACH REACHA AREADER READER

Community leaders and volunteers will join Black Press and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy on October 9th to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and to celebrate the power literacy has in Cranbrook. The 4th Annual Reach a Reader campaign will raise funds for Cranbrook’s community-based literacy programs. Why? Literacy is important to all British Columbians! It impacts every aspect of our lives: healthcare, crime

rates, employment and economic status. Despite its essential role in life, at least 40 per cent of B.C. adults have difficulty reading a newspaper, filling out a work application, reading a map, or understanding a lease – and this percentage is increasing. “The Reach a Reader campaign reminds everyone that literacy skills are important if we are to succeed in today’s world,” says Katherine Hough, Cranbrook Community Literacy Coordinator. “When we hear the word literacy many of us think ‘you can read or you can’t read.’ Of course literacy is about reading and writing but it is also about the ability to express our ideas, think critically, and use technology. Literacy is wide and all-encompassing. Literacy is having the skills you need, to do what you want to do in your life.” In Cranbrook funds will help support the Young Parents Education Program. This program helps parents who have not completed grade 12 and who have pre-school aged children to obtain their high school diploma as well as achieve parenting, life and work skills. The lives of both parent and child are improved as they learn to advocate for themselves, increase their capabilities and transition to improved employment opportunities or higher

education. One young parent was so motivated that she continued to read her textbook while in labour! She is now in university with lots of possibilities ahead of her. You can support the Reach a Reader campaign by making a donation in exchange for a special edition of the Cranbrook Daily Townsman or the Advertiser on October 9th. Volunteers will be hitting the streets with papers in hand between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. You may also donate online at cbal.org. CFUW announces bazaar is sold out CFUW Cranbrook Club Members are pleased to announce that all space for their 30th annual event has been sold out. “I have started a wait list, because inevitably someone will have to cancel for one reason or another,” said Cathryn Henley, Chair of the Club’s prestigious bazaar for 2014. “We would rather be prepared to fill those spaces than see them empty at this huge event”. All artisans are from the East Kootenay; from Creston to Invermere, and produce their own product. “We are lucky to see new artisans every year,” said Henley. “There are nine new-

to-us artisans and then there are some coming back from being absent at this Bazaar.” Due to Hallowe’en falling on Friday this year, we have moved the Bazaar date to Saturday, November 8th. As in the last 29 years, we are at the Cranbrook Golf Course on 2nd Street South and will be open from 10am to 4pm. Our entrance fee is still only a Toonie and there are 30 chances of winning one of the great door prizes donated by the participating artisans. Another great feature of this bazaar is that all products are produced by hand. We have see Bazaar page 10

to sample and buy and Anna will have her “Stuff” too. The gift packs are great presents for the hard-to-buy family or man. There is more: There are gift baskets of all kinds, styles and sizes, filled, wrapped and ready to go; and for the crafters, a new artist is selling her Art Foamies she has created to make all kinds of art crafts easier and inspirational from scrapbooking and card-making to “Art”. Speaking of art, we have that, too; with Jim Robertson’s delightful, bright creations and Janice Strong’s beautiful photography. Both are well-known artists in their own fields and do cards, calendars as well as framed work. CFUW Cranbrook Club is bringing in fresh roasted, organic, bird- and tree-friendly Fair Trade coffee again this year. Cafe Femenino is from Peru, Guatemala and Mexico this year, and come in decalf and regular beans or ground one pound bags. We also have gift packs again this year with three half-pound Christmas themed coffees. There are gifts for everyone from anyone, as prices range from affordable for a child to buy for a parent or sibling, favourite aunt or uncle, to prices saved for that special event gift. “We started the door prize draws early in 2013, and that worked well for those winners who were still at the Bazaar, as well as for the volunteers,” claimed Henley. “This year, we will begin the door prize draws at 12 noon. Shoppers do not have to be in attendance to get their prize.” We also have our annual gift basket to raffle off this year. Each year it contains about $200.00 worth of products donated by the club membership. That draw will be made at 4 pm and the winner will be notified immediately by phone. Like all other Bazaars, all proceeds from this 30th annual event will go back into the East Kootenay community in the many projects and programs the CFUW Cranbrook Club supports.

International Day of Older Persons Seniors Guide & Estate Planning

The amount of funeral decisions to be made can be staggering Submitted

When loved ones pass away, the pain of the loss can leave family members feeling paralyzed and overwhelmed. In the middle of this, many times the spouse and children are left with decisions and arrangements to make, when all they want to do is grieve their loss. Daryl & Barb Houser, who have been helping people in the Kootenay’s for the past 12 years have heard many stories – some happy, some encouraging but many sad and even bitter accounts of what happened after their loved one passed away. Daryl estimates that there are between 35 and 50 decisions that must be made during the process of funeral arranging alone. Together

with Barb, they work with people who simply want to make their passing easier for their family. This is usually done by making prearrangements for their own cremation, burial and/or memorials. The Housers represent FamilySide and Purple Shield and work directly with the funeral homes in the Kootenay’s. FamilySide/Purple Shield have been the premier funeral funding company in Canada since 1955 and have a direct relationship with the funeral homes whereby contracts can be written which in effect “lock in” the costs at today’s price. Daryl and Barb like to meet with families when there is no hurry and no pressure. They will listen to the wishes of each person and then explain what options

are available to fulfill that desire. There are many things people don’t understand or have just been given wrong information and it is their wish to make things simple and clear. There is a plan appropriate to every budget – it is affordable for everyone with a simple monthly payment option. People often think that funerals cost a lot of money – and they can! But they don’t have to and that’s where the benefit of planning ahead makes all the difference. There is no cost or obligation to meeting with Barb or Daryl and each person will be left with costs, options and a helpful 20 page planning guide book. This book gives each person an opportunity to record their wishes for their loved

ones to know and follow. It also contains information for their executor. The book is a free gift to the family. There is a lot of misunderstanding regarding the CPP death benefit and Spousal allowance. Daryl and Barb will give you personalized information geared to your estate and these benefits. alarm within close range. Set up a fire extinguisher and make sure the senior knows how to use it. Special household appliances, such as stoves, are now available with automatic “off” functions to reduce

the risk of fire caused by absent-mindedness. This could be a worthwhile investment, especially if forgetting to turn off burners is a concern. Declutter the living space by storing away obstacles that can be tripped over, such as

sessions on September 29 for those interested in earning a Bachelor of Education degree in Cranbrook. The first session will begin at 2:30 pm followed by a second session at 5:30 pm. Both sessions will take place in Summit Hall, Room S208 at the College’s Cranbrook

main campus and are open to potential students as well as parents. Held in partnership with the University of Victoria, the East Kootenay Teacher Education program allows students to complete all four years of the Bachelor degree program at College of the Rockies’ main campus. Upon completion of one year of University Studies courses, students apply

to become UVIC students for the remainder of the program but continue to attend classes at the Cranbrook main campus. East Kootenay Teacher Education program coordinator Sandi Lavery says, “Students in the Teacher Education program acquire the knowledge, skills and practical experience they need to be eligible to apply for a teaching certificate in BC or in other provinces and countries. The program incorporates inquirybased and project-based

learning which is currently in high demand in the schools.” “The majority of our graduates find work quickly after completing the program. Many are employed in the northern part of the country while others have found work locally,” Lavery continues. While attendees of the information session enjoy refreshments, representatives from the program will be on hand to discuss program details, prerequisites and admission requirements.

PRojECT HEAvY DuTY 2014

by ARNE PETRYSHEN A group of Mount Baker students had a chance to get hands-on experience and training working with big machinery in the spring. The 24 students put their names forward for the four day Project Heavy-Duty program, which included two days of certification and safety training and two days of working with the actual machinery. It’s put on by the College of the Rockies, in partnership with School District 5 and WorkSafe BC, and took place on Thursday and Friday, May 22 and 23, at the city’s public works yard on Cobham Avenue. Kaley Mitchell, who is in grade 12 at Mount Baker, said the program has broadened her outlook on what’s available in the trades. She said it’s definitely made her think more seriously about going into the trades as a career. “It’s been very educational,” Mitchell said. “It’s changed what I might do.” Hugh Moore, recruiting officer from the College of the Rockies, said the event is designed to help students experience first-hand what a career is. “We have the good fortune to partner with industry, who have donated both operators and equipment for those days,” Moore said.

Fiorentino Contracting Ltd Mainroad Hardy Construction Services Ltd. Teck Finning Great West Equipment Sandor Rental Equipment Ltd.

Industry employers and operators donated both heavy equipment and staff for the event. “Every piece of equipment that’s moving has a high school student driving it,” he said. “We have kids who have probably never driven anything beyond their mom’s fourcylinder Honda running an articulating dump truck down a gravel road.” He said by the end of the four days students will have certifications and training for entry level work. “Every year we have students who get hired as a result,” he said. “They work with an operator here who passes their name on and they get summer work. It leads to careers for some of them.” The program has been going on for many years. It alternates between Cranbrook and the Elk Valley locations. Riley Piper, a student in grade 11 at Mount Baker, said the training has been a great experience. “It’s been really cool,” Piper said. “We get to use all the machines and learn how to run them.” Piper said he’s always wanted to go into the trades and especially enjoyed working on the excavator. “It’s fun work,” he said. Paul Duczek, who teaches at Mount Baker, said the four days are about safety awareness and trades exposure for the students. He also noted the tremendous support from the city and trades community. “There are thousands of dollars of donations here in machinery and fuel costs,” he said, adding that without that support something like that wouldn’t happen. Mary Salmon, occupational safety officer with Worksafe BC, explained that the organization provided the safety training and the personal protection equipment.
