Despite best efforts to stay healthy throughout the winter months, catching a cold or flu bug can naturally get the better of us.

FRAUD prevention tips for older adults

Seniors are all too often the target of fraudulent phone calls and email scams.

Many security experts agree that older adults can be seen as profitable targets for fraudsters – in part because seniors are often thought to have a “nest egg” and an excellent credit rating.

What makes this even more alarming is that research shows seniors who do become victims of fraud are not telling their friends or family. This is an important step to help law enforce-

“Individuals should never be embarrassed to talk to family, friends or their bank if they have questions or are worried they may be a victim of fraud.”

Jamieson points out that there are many things seniors, and all Canadians, can do to help safeguard their personal information and prevent fraud. He recommends the following tips for the young at heart: • Always treat your cards as if they were cash, and don’t leave them in places where they are easily accessible to anyone.

• Always report lost or stolen cards immediately to your bank.

• Always make a list of all your card numbers and keep this list in a safe place.

• Always create a PIN that is hard to guess (e.g. not a birthday or phone number).

• Always be cautious when asked for personal information over the phone when you didn’t initiate the call.

• Never share your PIN – not even with family, friends or caregivers.

• Never keep a written copy of your PIN in your wallet or purse.

• Never lend your credit or debit card to anyone, ever.

• Never agree to a “free trial” or “sample” without reading the terms and conditions. You may be agreeing to future monthly charges – which aren’t free.

When an elderly person loses taste, it can cause a loss of appetite, weight loss, poor nutrition, weakened immunity, and even death.

Normal taste occurs when molecules released by chewing or the digestion of food stimulate special sensory cells in the mouth and throat. Many of the small bumps that can be seen on the tip of the tongue contain taste buds. At birth, we have about 10,000 taste buds scattered on the back, side, and tip of the tongue.

After age 50, we may start to lose taste buds. We can experience five basic taste sensations: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami, or savory. Umami was discovered by a Japanese scientist in the early part of the twentieth century. It is the taste of glutamate, a building block of protein found in chicken broth, meat stock, and some cheeses. Umami is the taste associated with MSG (monosodium glutamate) that is often added to foods as a flavor enhancer.

The five taste qualities combine

with other oral sensations, such as texture, spiciness, temperature, and aroma to produce what is commonly referred to as flavor. It is flavor that lets us know whether we are eating an apple or a pear.

Many people are surprised to learn that we recognize flavors largely through our sense of smell. Try holding your nose while eating chocolate. You will be able to distinguish between its sweetness and bitterness, but you can’t identify the chocolate flavor. That’s because the distinguishing characteristic of chocolate is largely identified by our sense of smell as aromas are released during chewing.

Food flavor is affected by a head cold or nasal congestion because the aroma of food does not reach the sensory cells that

detect odors. A distorted sense of taste can be a serious risk factor for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other illnesses that require sticking to a specific diet. When taste is impaired, a person may change his or her eating habits.

Some people may eat too little and lose weight, while others may eat too much and gain weight.

Many older people believe that there is nothing they can do about their weakened sense of taste. Depending on the cause of your problem, your doctor may be able to suggest ways to regain your sense of taste or to cope with the loss of taste. The realities of dementia

Who hasn’t joked about misplaced keys or a forgotten word being the onset of Alzheimer’s disease?

Don’t kid yourself. Alzheimer’s disease is a serious condition that will affect 1.4 million Canadians within the next 20 years, more than double today’s figure.

Are you a baby boomer or have you recently immigrated to Canada? If so, the Canadian Liver Foundation (CLF) wants you to speak with your doctor about getting a onetime blood test for hepatitis C. “While anyone can be exposed to hepatitis C, the latest data show that baby boomers are up to five times more likely to be infected by the disease than other adults,” said Dr. Morris Sherman, Chairman of the CLF and a practicing liver specialist.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control recently issued its recommendation that all adults born between 1945 and 1965 should have a one-time hepatitis C test. The CLF has extended the recommendation for testing beyond the boomer generation to those born between 1945 and 1975, taking into account immigration and the potential for exposure via medical procedures or immunization in countries where hepatitis C is more common.

“Because there are often no symptoms for years after initial infection, any at-risk activities that took place decades ago, such as tattoos, piercings or using injectable drugs – not to mention sharing infected personal hygiene items – can increase

your risk,” said Dr. Sherman.

A recent survey conducted by the Canadian Liver Foundation (CLF) has found that confusion and a lack of information may be standing in the way of Canadians with hepatitis C being diagnosed and treated.

The survey found that general practitioners (GPs) admit to having limited understanding of the disease and more than half (57 per cent) are unaware that hepatitis C can be cured.

In addition, 83 per cent agree that patients would benefit from more routine screening.

“Today’s treatments can cure a majority of those with hepatitis C,” said Dr. Morris Sherman, Chairman of the CLF and a practicing liver specialist. “We’re urging GPs to immediately begin recommending testing for patients born between 1945 and 1975, the demographic most likely to be infected with the disease.”

Canadians also underestimate the pervasiveness and seriousness of the disease. In fact, 55 per cent of Canadians believe that HIV/AIDS has about the same or higher prevalence than hepatitis C, which may indicate why more Canadians report being tested for HIV/AIDS (32 per cent) than hepatitis C (23 per cent). The reality is that over 300,000 Canadians are living with chronic hepatitis C, while an estimated 71,000 Canadians

Aging population spurs need for women to make health last: Heart and Stroke Foundation Good fitness first saved Micheline Legault’s life.

Now, it’s giving the 69-year-old a second life in her senior years Nine years ago, Legault was taking her regular skate along Ottawa’s Rideau Canal. An avid outdoors person, she was surprised to have trouble breathing. Just by chance, at that exact moment, Legault’s husband called on her cell phone. He insisted she give her phone to a passerby, who immediately called the paramedics. Legault soon suffered a heart attack, lost consciousness and remained in a coma for three days.

Despite having a history of heart disease in her family, Legault didn’t think she was at risk.

“I really thought heart disease happened to men more than women, so this was a real surprise to me,” said Legault.

Prior to her heart attack, Legault kept physically active all year round. She lives in Chelsea, Quebec, an outdoor enthusiast’s Nirvana that features national parkland, a ski resort and a large trail system. Her cardiologist told Legault that her fitness level saved her life.

With women living longer, the Heart and Stroke Foundation is underlining the need for adult and senior women to embrace lifestyle choices to make health last. Since 1999, Bobbe Wood has championed innovative cardiovascular research, advocacy and public awareness initiatives on both the provincial and national levels. Wood, president of the foundation, has dedicated herself to improving awareness among women.

“Many women are unaware of, or simply ignore, the symptoms of heart attack and stroke.

Heart disease and stroke is a leading cause of death for women in Canada, and kills seven times more women than breast cancer. Nine in 10 Canadian women have at least one significant risk factor for heart disease or stroke.

Since her heart attack, Legault says she has learned new ways to improve her diet.

“I’m definitely more careful with my diet after the heart attack,” says Legault. “I always check the labels when I go grocery shopping, I cook with olive oil instead of butter, eat smaller portions of meat and I don’t eat things like cookies anymore.”

Legault and her husband celebrated the second anniversary of her heart attack by returning to the Rideau Canal. Her husband teared up as they skated hand in hand.

“That was very emotional for me, and even more so for my husband. When I was in a coma, he stayed by my bed for three days as I lay there unconscious.

He thought he had lost his best friend. Even today, it’s still very emotional for him,” she says.

Pre-Planning makes good sense A recent survey has shed some light on funeral planning. The survey revealed that only 9 per cent of Canadians have pre-planned their funeral, despite the fact that there are many good reasons to do it.

Rest easy in retirement Retirement often means getting used to living with reduced income, but with a bit of planning, you may hardly notice it.

Raymond Chun, a senior vice president at TD Canada Trust, says the key to keeping our finances in order is to set up a budget before we stop working.

“Creating a post-retirement budget doesn’t have to be complicated,” he explains. “At its most basic, a budget is a just a plan to match the money going out each month with the money coming in, and there are lots of tools available to help with that.”

Chun recommends that we start by listing of all sources of

monthly income, such as pension and investment income, along with any withdrawals planned from savings like RRSPs and RRIFs. Don’t forget to include any other income expected, perhaps from taking on a part-time job, or by doing some consulting work. Next, list all of anticipated monthly expenses – which for most people will be lower than what they were while employed – and divide these into essential and discretionary categories.

“Essential spending includes things like rent or mortgage payments, property taxes, utilities and basic groceries,” he continues. “Discretionary spending is for the items we want to spend money on, but don’t have to, such as dining out, entertainment and recreation, hobbies

Minimizing Your Risk

Every year, one in three Canadian seniors will fall at least once.

Hip fractures are the most common type of fall injury among seniors, and about 20 percent of injury-related deaths can be traced back to a fall.

Factors that can increase your risk of falling include: poor balance, decreased muscle and bone strength, reduced vision or hearing, and unsafe conditions in and around your home.

Nearly half of all injuries among seniors happen at home, with bathrooms and stairs being particularly dangerous areas. Prevent falls by making adjustments

Protect Yourself In the bathroom: - Use a rubber bath mat for the tub and shower. Install the mat when the tub is dry.

- Install grab bars by the toilet and bath to help you sit and stand.

- Use a bath seat in the shower and a raised toilet seat, if you need them.

- Wipe up any moisture or spills right away.

In the living room and bedroom: - Reduce clutter. Get rid of loose wires, cords and other obstacles.

- Consider using a cordless phone so you will not have to rush to answer it.

- Scatter mats are tripping hazards. Get rid of them or make sure they are non-slip.

- Move slowly out of your bed or chair. Getting up suddenly can make you dizzy.

In the kitchen: - Store kitchen supplies and pots and pans in easy-to-reach locations.

- Store heavy items in lower cupboards.

- Use a stable step stool with a safety rail for reaching high places.

- Always wipe up spills immediately to prevent slipping.

- If you use floor wax, use the non-skid kind.

- Ask for help with tasks that you feel you cannot do safely on your own.

Around stairways: - Make sure your stairs are well lit.

- Have solid handrails on both sides of the stairway.

- Remove your reading glasses when you go up or down stairs.

- Never rush up or down your stairs. Rushing is a major cause of falls.

Around the exterior of your home: - Keep front steps and walkways in good repair and free of snow, ice and leaves.

- Keep the front entrance well-lit.

- Put gardening implements and other tools away when you are not using them.

Eat Healthy Meals

Good nutrition will help keep up your strength, resistance and sense of balance. Get a copy of Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating, and follow the advice about healthy food choices.

Do not skip meals. It can make you weak and dizzy, which will increase your risk of falling.

Keep Fit Stay active.

Do what you can to maintain your flexibility, balance and strength. Start slowly and build up until you accumulate a total of 30-60 minutes of moderate physical activities on most days. A few short exercise sessions during the day are as valuable as one longer session.

Use Medication Wisely

Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the possible side-effects of combining prescription drugs with over-the-counter remedies, natural health products, or foods and juices. If your medication makes you dizzy or sleepy, adjust your activities to prevent the risk of falling. Natural health products can have potent effects on the body. While the intent is for positive health effects, there is also the potential for side effects.

Therefore, before you take any self-selected or over-the-counter product, including a natural health product, you should take steps to be sure it is the correct product for you. Also, ask your doctor whether or not you can drink alcohol with the medications you are taking. Alone or in combination with drugs, the misuse of alcohol can cause falls.

Use Safety Aids

Use devices that can help keep you safe and active. Wear your glasses and hearing aid. Consider using a walker or cane. If using a cane, make sure it is the correct height and has a rubber tip for safety. If you will be walking on icy roads or paths, consider using grippers on your boots and a special ice-cap for your cane with cleats to prevent it from sliding.

Positive thoughts lead to positive emotions. Positive emotions make you healthy and happy. Whoever is optimistic lives a happier and more successful life! How happy you are is really up to you!

Think about the path of inner happiness. Happiness research has found that happiness comes 90% from within and only 10% by external things (job, money, relationships) Do good -Those who regularly do good things for others are 24% happier than those who only live for themselves.

A spiritual centering should include the five principles of love, peace, truth, strength and joy. Heredity. There is a genetic link in some specific forms of osteoarthritis. Some families may have a tendency for defective cartilage, while other families may have slight defects in the way the joints fit together.

Minimizing Your Risk While you can’t avoid some risk factors such as age and heredity, there are steps you can take to help prevent osteoarthritis and cope with its effects once you have it.

Adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise such as walking, cycling and swimming. This will help strengthen muscles that support the joints and keep the joints flexible.

Reach and maintain a healthy weight. It will help reduce stress on the joints and spine, and also help prevent a number of other diseases and conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.

Protect your joints by avoiding excess stress on them in daily life.

Position yourself so that excess stress does not occur.

Once osteoarthritis has developed, there are several devices that can help you cope, such as canes, grab bars and larger handles.

Medication can sometimes help to reduce pain. Talk to your doctor about the appropriate medication for your condition.

Both heat and cold can help, depending on the symptoms. If pain is the main problem, heat will help. If swelling is the main problem, then cold will help.

With severe, advanced osteoarthritis, surgery is an option.
