by Tom Fletcher The B.C. health ministry is aiming to add up to 80 rural ambulance paramedic positions in small communities by combining their duties with local care facilities. Health Minister Terry Lake said the approach to maintain rural ambulance service has been tried for several years, but was hampered by restrictions in the paramedics’ union contract. New contract terms have been worked out with the B.C. Ambulance Service

and the ministry is working with other health care representatives to develop what he calls “community para-medicine.” “There are good examples of this in Ontario and other jurisdictions where there are too few calls to have a full-time paramedic,” Lake said in an interview at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Whistler this week. “When that full-time paramedic is not on a see Ambulance page 4

10 Neat Things by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Fall Tree Care

1. Get Them in the Ground. Fall is a great time to plant, especially when it comes to trees and shrubs. The soil is still warm, helping roots grow, but the days are cooler, putting less stress on the plant as it is transplanted. When choosing a tree or shrub at the nursery in the fall, you will get good-sized plants, giving you great value for your money. 2. Use Protection. Trees and shrubs, especially young and newly planted ones, are vulnerable to fluctuations of temperature and moisture in the winter. One good practice to protect your plants is mulching. Spread a thin layer of composted mulch over the soil underneath the tree and shrub, at least as far as the branches reach. This will protect feeder roots and mulch will also slowly decompose, adding nutrients to the soil right where the plants need it. 3. Time for Tea. There are some shrubs that will need special winter attention and tender tea roses certainly fall into that category. Once the ground is completely frozen, mulch your roses with peat moss at least 10 to 16 inches up and around each plant. Using a rose collar will help you keep the peat moss in place. For tender climbers, the stems will need to be wrapped with burlap or laid down on the ground and covered. 4. Get in Shape. Pruning is used to keep trees and shrubs healthy and looking good. Remember that it can never be a successful way of reigning in a tree that has outgrown its space. To limit the amount of stress on the plant, pruning should be done with proper, sharpened tools when the tree or shrub is dormant. Late fall and early spring are the best times to prune. When pruning in the fall, however, be more conservative, removing only dead, damaged or diseased limbs as well as weak and thin or criss-crossing branches. 5. Wrap ‘Em Up. Conifers and evergreens are best pruned in the spring, not the fall, because they are pruned back to new growth and you do not want to unnecessarily expose that in the winter. Winter maintenance for evergreens may include wrapping, or - for larger plants - using a rope to tie up the branches to help protect them from snow damage. You can add another layer of protection by applying an anti desiccant in late fall or early winter. 6. Hit Them in Their Sleep. A great way to control overwintering insects in your trees and shrubs is using a natural horticultural oil when the plants are dormant. This product will smother insects, eggs and larvae, but timing is crucial when applying it. Pick a dry, sunny day with temperatures above 4 degrees Celsius and no frost expected for 24 hours to carefully coat all surfaces with a fine mist. 7. Danger from Below. If mice, voles or rabbits are a problem in your yard, tree guards are an essential piece in the puzzle when it comes to protecting your plants. Wrap the lower portion of any thin trunk in tree wrap to discourage rodents nibbling and after a snowfall, pack the snow around the tree if rabbits nibbling on low branches can be an issue. 8. Oh Deer, Not Here! With supplies dwindling in the colder months, your trees and shrubs might look like an oasis for a starving deer. To avoid them starting a feeding frenzy on your plants, keep applying deer repellents, such as Bobbex throughout the fall and winter. You can cut down on how often you spray, but should use a bit stronger mix. Keep in mind that temperatures should be above 1 degree Celsius when spraying Bobbex. 9. No More Food. As the season winds down, you can stop fertilizing your trees and shrubs and if you want to give them a bit of food, watch the nitrogen content of the fertilizer. Too much can encourage your plant to send out new growth that may not have time to prepare for winter. Best to wait until spring before you fertilize. 10. Keep the Water Coming. In the fall, you can reduce the amount of water you are giving your trees and shrubs as they do not need as much. It is important though, right before freeze up, to give them a good, deep drink. What you want to create is an ice ball around the roots of your tree or shrub that will act as excellent winter root protection.

Walking for a cure The TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes occurs in more than 70 communities across the country and brings thousands of people together for a common purpose – finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. Since 2000, TELUS, our team members and retirees have donated more than $7 million to fund research that will help realize this goal. Did you know that more than 300,000 Canadian children and adults live with type 1 diabetes? The TELUS Walk raises money for JDRF to continue funding critical research to find a cure for diabetes and its complications. The research they fund helps develop advanced treatments to

He said his goal is to add 80 positions over the next 18 months, working with local doctors, nurses and residential care providers. Crews plan restoration burns this week Submitted

When:

Photo Black Press

If weather conditions are right this week, crews from B.C.’s Wildfire Management Branch will conduct two low-intensity, prescribed burns for the Rocky Mountain Trench Ecosystem Restoration Program. One prescribed burn being conducted for ecosystem restoration purposes will occur on Bare Mountain and is located seven kilometres south of the Kikomun-Koocanusa bridge on the east side of Koocanusa reservoir. The burn area is proposed as two separate burns for a total of 241 hectares. The other prescribed burn being conducted for ecosystem restoration purposes will occur on Artesian Pasture and is located just south of McGinty Lake near Meadowbrook. The proposed burn area is 387 hectares. Historically, the forest in the Rocky Mountain Trench was renewed through frequent, low-intensity

ground fires. Such fires removed the shrubby understory and created a relatively open forest with large, healthy trees. The exclusion of fire from the landscape over recent decades has increased the fuels that contribute to the risk of more intense and damaging fires, and reduced the amount of open grasslands in the Rocky Mountain Trench. Combined with other factors, the resulting forest ingrowth has caused an overall deterioration in wildlife habitat, cattle forage and forest values. Crews are waiting for a ‘burn window’— when temperature, humidity and wind conspire to create safe and effective conditions. Every effort is made to ensure smoke levels are tolerable, burns are safe and the treatment is effective. For more information on these prescribed burns, please visit trench-er.com.

Four impaired drivers taken off of local roads during weekend Submitted

The driver sped up in what appeared to be an attempt to avoid police, he made some quick turns and managed to make it home, but the officer was right behind him and took him into custody. Again the driver was impaired, he blew a “Fail” and will face the same driving prohibition and vehicle impoundment as the others. Given the manner in which the driver drove to avoid police he was also issued a Violation Ticket for Drive without Reasonable Consideration. In each of these incidents drivers brought attention to themselves by committing traffic violations. Officers routinely conduct traffic stops for what may appear to be minor infractions, but often it can lead to far more. In these cases officers were able to safely remove four drivers from the road who were impaired before they caused injury to themselves or others.

Last Friday, Sept 19, turned out to be a very busy night for Kimberley RCMP members. Four impaired drivers were taken off the road and two males were arrested after several vehicles in the Platzl parking area were damaged. The first incident took place in Marysville around 9:30 p.m. The officer witnessed a driver exit a business and cut off another vehicle he stopped the vehicle. The officer noted signs of impairment and obtained a breath sample, it was a “Fail” which means the driver is now prohibited from driving for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for 30 days. Just after midnight police received the report of the damage to a vehicle. Patrols were made but police did not locate the suspects. Later an officer was making patrols near the ski hill when he noted a vehicle being driven in an unusual manner. He conducted a traffic stop and noted signs

of impairment, a breath demand was made and the driver blew a “Fail”. But while dealing with the driver and passenger he noted they fit the description of the suspects in the damage. The identity was confirmed and they were arrested for the damage. It turns out other vehicles were damaged so police will be recommending several counts of Willful Damage. This is in addition to his driving prohibition and vehicle impoundment. At 2 a.m. an officer observed a vehicle speeding with the music blaring. He stopped the vehicle and noted the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The breath demand was read and a breath sample was obtained, it was a “Fail”. Again the driver is prohibited from driving for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. Then at 4:30 a.m. an officer observed a vehicle head towards Townsite that did not comply with the Motor Vehicle Act.

The weather was perfect for the 31 competitors of all ages in both English and Western classes. This was a schooling show and a great place to try out what a horseshow is like in a relaxed atmosphere. Our Show Judge offers suggestions and tips to the competitors on how to improve their skills and gives an idea of what a judge is looking for. You do not need to be a member of the club to participate, but you must have current Horse Council of BC insurance. This event has grown over the past 4 years and we look forward to giving out more beautiful rosette ribbons next year! The club is winding down for the year, with two gymkhanas left and

our annual awards banquet on Nov.15/14. The Maverick Riding Club will start up again in the spring with the first monthly gymkhana at the end of April, skill development clinics, parade entries, drill team, trail rides and always welcomes new members and suggestions. The community has donated a lot towards improving Idlewild arena so let’s keep using it.

It was a memorable trip to the Richmond Olympic Oval on September 4th to 7th for 4 members of Evolution Martial Arts of Cranbrook BC. Earlier this year, Quinn Robertson, Dallas Wiebe, Dan McGifford, and Simon Wachon competed in provincial tournaments to qualify for a position on Team Canada and represent our nation at the first ever TAFISA (The Association For International Sport for All) World Martial Arts Games. After successfully securing their spots, the team continued to train and prepare for the event both mentally and physically. For Quinn, Dallas, and Dan, this would be their first world level event! However, for Simon, who is the head instructor and founder of Evolution Martial Arts, this would be a familiar platform as he has practiced Tae kwon Do for nearly 30 years and after competing and wining in similar events, was able to use his experience and knowledge to help prepare the team! The opportunity to represent both Cranbrook and Canada proved successful as the team brought home 5 silver medals and 1 bronze!! Not every battle was won, but everyone brought home an experience that deserves recognition for what they accomplished!!! We would like to thank the the entire community of Cranbrook who helped us in our fundraising efforts to send this team of 4 to Richmond as well as the following local businesses for their contributions. With out this kind of support, we would not have been able to compete and for that we are forever grateful! Thank you to Denham Ford, Kootenay News Advertiser, Northstar Motors, Sandor Rentals, The Best Western, Freightliner, Bridge Interiors, Speedy Glass, Heritage Inn, The Brick, Cranbrook Glass, Mark’s WorkWear House, Boston Pizza, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Superstore, OK Tire, The Bedroom Furniture Galleries, Andres Electronic Experts, and Hot Shots!!!!

Signs Monitors. Trevor Gordon, of Boston Pizza and Pat Spring of Northstar GM first brought the Charity Golf Tournament to the community three years ago, turning the Cranbrook Golf Club in to a Par 3 course for one day, giving every participant a chance to shoot for a hole in one on each hole to win a new vehicle. It is the only tournament of its kind in the Cranbrook area. Participants are treated to a fun-filled day and evening, combined with amazing auction items such as tickets to Vancouver Canucks games, Katy Perry concert tickets and other fantastic prizes.

The past three years has resulted in raising more than $65,000 for the East Kootenay Foundation for Health (EKFH). Trevor Gordon and Pat Spring said, “Every year, this tournament gets better and every year we are able to raise more money for healthcare right here in our community. It’s important for us, our businesses and our staff to raise money for a cause that impacts everyone right here where we live and do business.” The Par 3 Charity Golf Tournament Committee would like to thank everyone for their support and involvement in this event.

The Jaffray Fall Fair happened on Saturday, September 20. Hundreds of people lined up early for the annual parade that featured local floats, riders, clowns and classic cars. The vendors featured everything from crafts to fruits and vegetables. The variety of sights and sounds was electric at the fair, although baby Liam (right) took it all in stride.

Hugs: Hugs of the hugest kind to the Kimberley family who recently rescued a Kimberley dog abandoned by his ‘family’ to a life on a chain in the yard, sick and alone.

my windshield. Very professional, friendly, and went the extra mile even though I wasn’t a big spender. Thanks Chris, great attitude and work ethic.

Slugs: Slugs of the slimiest kind to those people who think and feel that pets (and animals in general) can be thrown away like garbage if it becomes too inconvenient to keep and care for them.

Hugs: A BIG HUG to the new family that just moved into the Park Royal neighborhood. They have already cut the weeds down alongside the fence and tidied the front garden. Welcome to the neighborhood. So nice to see people that care and take pride in their homes! Also, noticed your children walking your dog on a leash! Thank you for respecting our animal by laws!

Slugs: Slugs of the (equally) slimiest kind to people who put out real pumpkins, which lure bears into town, who then get shot. Is a pumpkin on Halloween really worth the life of a bear? Please buy a fake pumpkin people! Hugs: Huge hugs to all the staff & vets at Steeples & also to Dianne at Home Care Vet for all your care & compassion for our little dachshund Sweet Pea. We thank you for your encouragement & professionalism when we needed you. Also, thanks to my friends for keeping me strong & positive through the stress. God bless you all! Hugs: Was very impressed with Chris at City Glass this past week when he was fixing up

Slugs: HUGE FAT SLUG to the young lady with the stroller out for a walk with one dog off leash and one dog on leash who didn’t feel that we should mention to her that there are leash laws and both dogs need to be on a leash. Rather than simply admitting she was in the wrong, we were informed that just because we are OLD doesn’t mean we can tell her what to do! I am afraid age has nothing to do with it – the laws are for everyone – you are NOT exempt - put your dog on a leash at all times when out walking. No excuses!

Send a hug to someone you love

Professional Installation Done Right Unique Windows is pleased to announce we have 2 of only 18 InstallationMaster installers in all of BC

n No matter how much you spend on top of the line windows and doors, they won’t achieve peak performance if they are installed incorrectly n InstallationMasters certification lets you know that the contractor has installation experience and has been trained on the proper techniques. n There is a lot to know about properly installing windows and doors. Window manufacturers’ installation instructions can’t be expected to provide complete details on how to handle the hundreds of different surrounding walls and job site conditions found in the field. n All Weather Windows was the first manufacturer in Canada to adopt the InstallationMasters Program because we know that an incorrectly installed window or door cannot achieve peak performance and will result in numerous problems, leaving dissatisfied customers and ongoing service related problems.

time to snag a great deal on that dream-ride convertible you’ve always wanted to own, like the soft-top edition of Chevrolet Camaro. Chevrolet introduced an all-new Camaro Coupe for the 2010 model year and the Camaro Convertible followed a year later. While it shares many similar styling details, this modern day rebirth of Camaro is longer and wider than the celebrated original ‘67, of the “muscle car” era. Big wheels (18-inch to massive 21-inch rim sizes) are an important design feature of new Camaro and it’s a little taller. The 2011 Camaro Convertible was offered in just

LT and SS trim levels. The LT comes with a lightweight and powerful “LFX” 3.6-litre V6 engine. It can generate 323 horsepower and is mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. Revised and more realistic new fuel economy (auto) ratings are 12.9 L/100km in city and 8.1 L/100km on highway. A potent 6.2-litre V8 engine (from the Corvette) lies under the hood of Camaro SS. When paired with a sixspeed manual it’s tuned to pump out 425 horsepower. A 400 horsepower edition of this same engine (with more low-speed torque and a fuel saving cylinder deactivation system) is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The revised fuel

rating for Camaro SS (auto) is 14.9 L/100km in city and 9.5 L/100km on highway. There is a key engineering difference between Chevrolet’s Camaro and, its nemesis, the Ford Mustang. While both vehicles send gobs of engine power to the rear wheels, Mustang has a rigid rear axle and Camaro has a more sophisticated independent link system with half-shafts and coil springs attached to an isolated sub-frame. In theory, Camaro should be a better riding and handling sports car but that debate rolls on. A limited edition highperformance Camaro ZL1 arrived in 2012. It came with a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine that can produce an outrageous 580 horsepower … and it has obvious collector car potential. A special 45th Anniversary Package was also offered that year. Other than some packing revisions and new colour choices, there were no significant changes to the 2013 or the 2014 model year editions of Camaro. While it may be hard to find practical reasons to buy a sports car like Camaro, it did make it on the Consumer Reports list of “recommended” good, reliable cars to buy. Camaro Convertible is also even less practical and more expensive than the Coupe. Then again, it’s a hoot to drive, especially with the top down!

One nice hot sunny day in August found me in the Upper Squamish valley, four wheeling and fishing along the river. Nothing out of the ordinary happened until a fish and wildlife officer pulled up next to my truck, walked over to the river bank to ask me how the fishing was going. I showed him one Dolly Varden trout that was about 12 lbs and told him I hadn’t had a bite for the past hour. He smiled, wished me good luck and warned me to be careful, as there has been bears in the area including a grizzly. I smiled and said thanks. Two minutes after he left, I was looking over my shoulder every thirty seconds. I decided to pack up and try somewhere else. I climbed back into my truck and proceeded down the road. The conditions were very dusty and

the narrow logging road was covered in a heavy coating of dust. A short way up the road I felt a sneeze coming on. I pulled over and proceeded to sneeze. The vehicle windows were down and it was loud enough to echo through the dust covered tall grass to the left of me. To my surprise, a black bear stood up in the tall grass. He must have been two metres tall judging from the height of my truck. The massive bear strained to see through the dust and make out where the noise came from, lifting his noise in an attempt to pick up my scent. I watched him for about a minute although it seemed like an hour had past. As quickly as he popped up, he was down again and out of sight. I wanted to make sure he was gone before I moved on, so I gave a toot on my horn. Up goes the massive bear again looking around. He was a lot closer this time, so I laid into the horn and revved up my engine. At first he continued to stand tall but soon realized it wasn’t worth the effort to continue. He darted off and I watched him head back towards the river. I continued on the road for another 10 minutes and around a tight corner, still thinking about the bear when all of a sudden I see a big patch of black sprinting in front of my truck. I eased up on the throttle and watched another bear running down the road. He was quite scared so I gave him lots of room. He jumped off the road and down a steep hill taking out several small trees on the way down. I felt

“Remember, the trees don’t move,” coaches Al Lakas, chief instructor at Trail Tours. These words offer some solace but little consolation to the confines of singe-track riding. Claustrophobia is not a regularly referenced noun in my vocabulary, but when the local fauna and flora of the Ganaraska Forest are a hair’s length from your body, and the trail is inches wider than the handlebars of your bike, it’s hard to ignore. The Medusa-like temptation to fixate on upcoming

vegetation must be overcome. If you do happen to focus on them, it could be game over. “Oh, shoot, there’s a stum…” Thud. There goes the front end of your bike and probably you. If you look down, your handlebars might do a jiglike dance, and chances are, that’s where you end up. Down. Breathing through the anxiety is one way of conquering the trails. Another is a strong foundation in riding. But the most important of them all: vision. Before heading out onto the over 300 kilometres of trails nestled within the 11,000 acres of Ganaraska Forest, Trail Tours instructor Al gives my riding partner and I a lesson in a much less confining location. Thank goodness. Nestled in the heart of the seemingly limitless dirt biking and motorized vehicle playground is Trail Tours (www.trailtour.com.) It’s just over an hour’s drive east from Toronto and well worth the short-haul journey. After parking the car and walking a few paces through a trail, the world gets a little brighter. Literally and meta-

phorically. The sinewy trees – well, in comparison to west coast wood – that lead us to home base doesn’t let in a ton of light, so at the end of the trail, where Trail Tour’s open field training facility stands before me, the sun overflows like a perfectly-iced cake (you can never have too much icing.) Also, I’m going dirt biking. How could that not brighten your day? Whether you’re a first timer or an experienced rider, they have a program for you. Though this wasn’t my first rodeo in terms of dirt riding, it was in regards to singletrack. I could use all the tips and tricks I could get. Furthermore, I could always use a little more practice riding in the sand. Yikes. Day 1 of the two-day adventure consisted of making sure the techniques for single-track riding were fresh in our minds. It’s best just to ignore the trees or whatever hazards engulf you and the bike. Acknowledge them, but don’t stare. Otherwise, your fate will likely be sealed. After practicing in the various loops – there are different areas of their facility that cater to different techniques – it was off to the practice trail. Needless to say, I was not setting any speed records but it wasn’t about speed. That comes with time and experience. It was getting used to the fact that I didn’t have a lot of wiggle room and that my mind would want to play tricks on me if I didn’t relax, let the bike and myself breathe, and enjoy the best that machine and Mother Nature have to offer. Day 2 was a game changer. I was so happy that I did some basic skills the day before because I embraced the various tones and textures of the perpetually evolving gesee Ganaraska page B7
