The annual Cops for Cancer/ Tour de Rock will power into the Alberni Valley on Friday, Sept.

26 as part of the cycling team’s 1,000-kilometre ride across Vancouver Island.

The team departed the North Island on Saturday and will spend the next week cycling down to Victoria to raise money and awareness of pediatric cancer research.

Walmart on upper Johnston Road is hosting a Tour de Rock barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Riders will arrive at approximately 12:15 p.m. after cycling up and down the Hump for a presentation and meet and greet with the public.

“This is a unique opportunity to help encourage the riders for the second half of (our) journey,” said Carla Johnson of Island Radio in Nanaimo and Port Alberni, who is one of 22 cyclists on this year’s team.

Shipbuilders combine forces

Boat building is booming once again in Port Alberni.

Canadian Alberni Engineering (CAE) and Kamma and Blake Industries (KBI) launched their last boats as separate companies on Tuesday ahead of a merger that could see a massive increase in boat engineering in the city.

Canadian Alberni Engineering, who will absorb Kamma and Blake as part of the merger, launched a new sidewinder tug from Centennial Pier on Tuesday. The tug will go to a forestry company in the northern part of Vancouver Island.

“The sidewinder tugs are designed to be very, very strong with a lot of power and a lot of manoeuverability,” said Robert English, Vice President of Operations at CAE. The sidewinder tug will be used to “gather floating logs together into those large rafts that you see being towed to mills all over the Island and even to the mainland.”

Along with the sidewinder tug, a search and rescue boat was also launched from Centennial Pier on Tuesday, Sept.

23. The boat was built

by Kamma and Blake for the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue detachment in Courtenay.

The boat will replace a far older model that Courtenay’s search and rescue team currently has. The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue detachments are volunteer run and depend on government grants to upgrade this equipment.

According to Pete Tabler, Deputy Station Leader of the Port Alberni Marine Rescue Society, it took three to four years for

the Courtenay search and rescue team to collect the funds necessary to purchase the $700,000 boat.

Having a search and rescue life boat is essential for search and rescue teams to be able to participate in water rescues. “[This boat] is capable of going completely upside down and it will right itself, which keeps it safe for the crew and anybody who’s on board,” said English. The boat comes equipped with navigation tools and five-point harnesses which keep those on board firmly in place.

The two boats are only the beginning of the many vessels that CAE plans to build here.

Previously, CAE built steel hull boats while Kamma and Blake focused on aluminum hull models.

With the merger the companies will be able to combine resources and staff to take on more of the market.

“Between Paul’s [Blake’s] boat designing experience and our combined project management skills, we think we can be really competitive in designing pretty complicated boats,” said English.

English is also hoping to capture the international market, using Kamma and Blake’s reputation worldwide. That fits in

well with Port Alberni’s global reputation for boat building and servicing.

“People come here for boats from all over the world,” said Coun. Rob Cole, adding that when the Tall Ships festival last came to Port Alberni, “we sold a boat to a Russian captain. We sell boats all around the world.”

Pat Deakin, the city’s economic development manager, sees increased boat building as “a source of pride for the community.”

He also sees more tangible benefits: more people coming into the city for work.

“The merger will allow the companies to go after more work and bigger jobs” that will require more employees, he said.

While CAE is hoping to increase their activity internationally, they’re also hoping to gain more projects within Canada.

“Ultimately, we would like to be competitive in the next phase of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy,” said English.

The strategy is a federal government program implemented to rebuild national navy and coast guard fleets. While the major projects are taken on by larger companies like Irving and Seaspan, English said that there are smaller projects that will be announced for the second phase, which starts in spring of next year.

These projects are specially earmarked for smaller companies like CAE. “Between CAE and other good Canadian suppliers of electronic systems and ship design, we can put together a consortium that can compete for a fair share of the market.”

The market is worth $2 billion, so even if a tiny fraction came to Port Alberni that could mean millions in revenues.

In order to take on those projects, CAE will be constructing an industrial facility at lots A and B of the former Alberni Plywood site, next to Canal Beach. While the lease agreement between CAE and the Port Alberni Port Authority isn’t locked down yet, English believes that it will be soon.

“It’s just a matter of sitting down with the port authority for a couple of hours, getting some language in writing.

A stage three drought on Vancouver Island has Jen Fisher-Bradley of the Women’s Food and Water Initiative worried about the security of our food supply. FisherBradley is especially concerned given the current drought situation in California, one of the main importers of food to the region.

“We do really need to think about this [drought,] is it an ongoing trend,” Fisher-Bradley asked during a presentation to city council earlier

this month.

“In many jurisdictions across the province, the country and the continent, food security is an issue increasingly on people’s minds.”

Eight years ago, Fisher-Bradley brought a proposal for a climate change committee to city council. This month she asked council to authorize a food committee to help address concerns on a local level.

“Combined pressures of climate change and inequality make us wonder if there will be adequate nutrition available and

accessible to all.”

Citing the urban farming bylaw as a good first step, she told council that more actions needed to be taken and that a food committee, chaired by a city councillor and aided by city staff, could take charge of those steps.

A food committee “could find creative ways to encourage and help support these urban farmers,” including increasing productivity, soil health and preparing for droughts.

Coun. Jack McLeman voiced his approval for the idea but suggested that Fisher-Bradley

speak with the Young Professionals of Alberni Valley, who run the Dry Creek Community Garden.

“Any day we could have our earthquake here and have our roads closed,” said Coun. Wendy Kerr.

In reponse to Coun.

Rob Cole’s suggestion that Fisher-Bradley contact the regional district, Kerr said that the city faced different challenges with regards to urban farming.

“It’s a little harder for people within the city, particularly with lower incomes that may not own their land or apartment dwellers.”

Inbrief New school deal good starting point: Zydyk John Howitt Elementary school is taking part in a ‘selfregulation’ pilot project that aims to teach student show to regulate their own emotions. Jan Davidson, whose Grade 4-5 class is taking part in the project, said that she’s seen positive results and fewer anxious children already.

SD70 Superintendent Greg Smyth said that he’s impressed with the project so far and he hopes to see it expand to other classes across the Alberni school district.

Seismic shift in SD70 funding School districts will no longer be required to fund capital projects that relate to seismic upgrades due to an amendment to the Ministry of Education’s Capital Cost Sharing Policy. Previously, school districts were required to use any excess money (up to 50 per cent of project cost) that was not earmarked for specific programs to help the province fund capital projects.

With a new six-year agreement ratified by 86 per cent of the province’s 41,000 teachers, students in Port Alberni headed back to school this week.

While Alberni District Teachers’ Union president Ken Zydyk is happy to have children back in school, he has mixed feelings about the agreement.

“We did secure $400 million for classrooms over the next five years,” he said, but “I think the missing part for many teachers is the guaranteed support levels for students with diverse

learning needs.”

The $400 million is a sizeable sum but by the time it trickles down to smaller school districts like SD70 here in Port Alberni, Zydyk said that the district will be hard pressed to meet the needs of all their students.

“But there is a recognition that bargaining is about making tough choices and with no concessions to our collective agreement and the fact that there is now a guaranteed $400 million over the next five years, we felt that for this time that was a starting point.”

Some of that $400 million will go towards increasing the number

SD70’s share of the $400 million will allow the district to hire 10 or 11 full-time additional teachers over the next several years. The district has approximately 200 full-time equivalent teachers.

“It may be possible to put one additional teacher per school to help out,” Zydyk said.

While students have already missed three weeks of school this year, Zydyk said that there were no plans to shorten holidays

or extend the school year. The district may choose to rebalance out the terms for high school students so that both are of equal length. For updates, parents are encouraged to check www.sd70.bc.ca.

Plans to build a K-12 school in Ucluelet are currently on hold following a study done on seismic adjustments.

SD70 officials are waiting on a report based on that study that will provide guidance on how to ensure that the school is properly reinforced in the event of an earthquake.

Smyth stressed that the school district would focus on making sure that every single student was being adequately prepared for each new grade in order to pave the way for their grade 12 graduation and to avoid having them come back as adult learners later on.

Trees that feed: Rotarians plant hope Port Alberni Rotarian Edwin Knight is in Jamaica with Trees That Feed, an initiative to plant thousands of breadfruit trees in Jamaican schoolyards to help feed a country.

he afternoon session turned out to be hair raising, stomach wrenching, heart breaking and a heart bursting experience!

Mission Objective: plant 50 trees at a school for the physically and mentally challenged (who are often abandoned by their parents) located high up in the mountains, called Mustard Seed Communities, Jacob’s Ladder.

The ride up the mountain was better than a ride at Disneyland and a few of us paid for it with our stomachs and hair loss. It was a treacherous event punctuated with the driver’s concern for our delay.

Finally our arrival at the mountain top community opened our minds to the purpose of our trip.

Here was a collection of 35 buildings housing 88 children and young adults.

Heart wrenching to see the suffering as we rode by.

But this was not the misery of the forgotten and neglected! As we arrived at the main hall we began quickly to be blanketed in the

warmth and care of the attendees and of the founder.

As we progressed the soil got redder and redder! Next we trudged, (happily) to the hillside site to be met with several deep furrows. Awesome! We met the three young Jamaica men who had toiled some days with pokers, rods, pick and shovel to prepare the way. Clearly the planting of the 50 trees of life would be more ceremonial than hard work.

We set to task with each Rotarian selecting three or more trees and kneeling in the designated spots marked by sticks to play in the red ‘soil’.

What a gardener’s delight.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the federal Minister of Labour paid a visit to the Port Alberni campus of Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences (PCU-WHS) on Sept. 9.

Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for KamloopsThompson-Cariboo, has undertaken a study of workplace health policies and practices across Canada on behalf of Labour Minister Kellie Leitch.

She was accompanied by Assistant Deputy Minister Mr. Kin Choi, who also serves as Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.

“I’ve met with a number of the WCBs, I’ve been to round tables, met with some of the academics from SFU and UBC, with the [Canadian] Mental Health Commission – one of my priorities has been around mental health, and it was always said that I had to come here,” McLeod said.

Leitch, who is a practicing pediatric orthopedic surgeon, was appointed to the post in July 2013.

workplace injury and illness.

“Sometimes I think what we have is wonderful things happening in silos that different people don’t know about, even in Canada,” she said. What is needed is someone to put all those pieces together.

“For example, I know the Canadian Mental Health Association does a marvelous job in supporting people with mental health issues.

“But I had no idea they also do some very good programming in [workplace health] and creating a supportive environment. I see you as a big connector in taking in all those pieces.”

PCU-WHS president Wolfgang Zimmermann said he is optimistic that the new emphasis on return-to-work and workplace mental health within the Labour Ministry will create new synergies and new opportunities for the university.

‘Mr. Volunteer’ helps hundreds with his efforts

I

f you need something done, ask a busy man” is without doubt a saying that perfectly fits Gerry Fagan’s disposition to help others.

For years he has been a tremendous force in the volunteer field in our community. Hundreds, if not thousands of people, especially seniors, have benefited from his giving spirit.

“My purpose is to help others who needs assistance, support or friendship,” says Fagan, a well known figure in Port Alberni, and, as many believe, one who is an example of what a true volunteer is and does for others.

Born in Victoria, the 70-something-year-old Fagan moved to Port Alberni more than 50 years ago and worked for Western Bakeries for 31 years until his retirement.

His early years as a volunteer began as a ball team coach for young players.

And shortly after his retirement, he decided to assist the seniors of Fir Park Village and Echo Village by driving the residents’ buses. He literally spent hundreds of hours every month taking them to various community activities, such as concerts, shopping excursions, picnics and a variety of social programs in our community and beyond. He also gave his time to train new volunteer drivers as well as taking over the maintenance and care of the vehicles.

The residents of both homes also benefit from Fagan’s continuous giving of his time, beyond his duties as a driver, as

at weekly and special events.

His friendly personality made him a charismatic figure among the seniors, families and care givers. He was seen at dances, birthday parties, anniversaries and other social events.

His driving work and social involvement with the seniors soon expanded to interviews he conducted with residents at Christmas time and then their publishing in the homes’ newsletters, thus, making these interviews historical memories of old time year-end celebrations.

These interviews led him to writing a book based on stories

and passages of the seniors’ lives from their early years in the Prairies, the west coast or the Maritime provinces of Canada, and, in some cases, their lives in far away lands. Life and Times—Memories of the 20th Century was published in the 1990s and became a must read account of memories of past eras.

The publication was so popular in the seniors’ circles and their families that it sold out (over 700 copies) soon after its launch.

“I felt like a celebrity when people lined up for me to sign the book,” Fagan recalls.

After Fir Park and Echo Villages, Fagan continued giving his time and effort to other organizations.

He became involved in the Alberni Valley Bulldogs hockey club as soon as it was established in Port Alberni, assisting with ticket sales, a position he still holds.

Also, he began volunteering at the Alberni Golf Course’s Men’s Club in the summer months; the Community Policing (Citizens on Patrol and Office Coordinator).

Fagan and Mike Carter, formerly of the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce, founded the “A.V. Ambassador” program to promote Port Alberni to the tourists visiting the west coast.

Fagan has been married to his wife Linda for 50 years (their golden anniversary celebration took place on June 6).

They have three children: two boys and a girl and are proud grandparents of three grandchildren.

Fagan’s volunteer resume keeps increasing.

Literacy rules above all else Report card time for local politicians September is literacy month in the Alberni Valley, and indeed this week you will have seen an emphasis on literacy through both the announcement of our editor, Susan Quinn’s Peter Gzowski Life Literacy Fellowship, and the annual Raise a Reader campaign that our compatriots at Literacy Alberni and the AV Times are running. While we each have our separate campaigns on which to focus, our goal is a common one: to keep the importance of literacy in the forefront of our attention.

This becomes doubly important when we hear rumours coming out of the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities meeting that funding for our local non-profit literacy organization is likely going to be eliminated in 2015. At the same time, the Alberni Valley’s level of illiteracy sits at a painful 40 per cent.

Literacy forms the foundation of a community’s health and wealth, both economically and socially. ‘Canadians must be equipped—whether it is to decode a training manual, balance a chequing account, interpret a construction blueprint, understand a tenancy agreement, share a story with their children, complete a school form, create a resume or comprehend their cell phone bill,’ says Gillian Mason, president of ABC Life Literacy.

‘Life today requires higher levels of literacy than ever before,’ she added.

Armed with this knowledge, it then puzzles us as to why the provincial and federal governments think it’s acceptable to cut funding for programs that help people attain such a vital skill. Our municipal leaders are trying to convince higher levels that they are wrong.

We implore the remaining 60 per cent of our community who are literate to keep up the pressure on various levels of government to adequately fund literacy programs. It will benefit us all in the long run.

ICTORIA – This November, voters will be hiring local politicians for a four-year term, rather than three.

It’s a good time to ask some tough questions about the performance of councils on the job they are assigned to do, as opposed to posturing about senior government matters.

Remember when it was fashionable for city councils to declare their communities “a nuclear weapons-free zone”? You can still see the signs entering Vancouver and Nanaimo. Alert voters may wonder: “Did they really think we’re that stupid?”

Yes, they did. And some of them still do.

To illustrate, allow me to introduce my poster child for bad local government, Victoria city councillor Ben Isitt.

A long-time NDP activist, Isitt got elected three

years ago after raising his name recognition with a couple of runs for mayor.

His rookie term has been notable for a series of stunts that extend his career as a professional student, campus radical and occasional history lecturer.

One of Isitt’s big studies is the influence of Soviet communism on the B.C. NDP. He was on one of his visits to Russia earlier this year when President Vladimir Putin was having his way with Crimea.

Isitt’s fondness for state control was on display last fall when aboriginal protesters disrupted natural gas drilling in New Brunswick, torching several police vehicles in the process.

Isitt took to his Facebook page to decry the federal government’s use of police against the population, and suggested Canada should emulate Venezuela, where petroleum

resources benefit the people rather than corporations.

Venezuela sells gasoline for nine cents a gallon, the late Hugo Chavez’s gift to his people after nationalizing the oil industry.

The capital, Caracas, is famous for extreme poverty, brutally suppressed riots, and a crime rate so bad it ranks among the world’s most dangerous cities.

How does Isitt’s political outlook translate to his role in local government?

This week local politicians gather in Whistler for the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention.

One of Isitt’s first contributions a couple of years ago was at a UBCM workshop on how to finance local infrastructure.

Isitt proposed setting up a municipal income tax.

Presumably this would be on top of property taxes.

In its wisdom, Victoria council appointed Isitt as their Capital Regional District representative. In that capacity he led the charge against Canada Post’s decision to wind up door-to-door delivery for the minority of people who aren’t already using community mailboxes.

After instructing Ottawa to accelerate the bankruptcy of this Crown corporation, Isitt began ordering the province to intervene in a dispute over Grace Islet, a rocky point off Salt Spring Island where an Alberta man is trying to build a retirement home.

The dispute centres on aboriginal burial grounds and artifacts, and Isitt appointed himself advocate for the grievances of native people.

When the B.C. government didn’t follow his instructions, he demanded that the Capital Regional District expropriate the land and evict the owner.

I am writing this letter to express my gratitude and appreciation to the wonderful people of Port Alberni.

On July 4, I was walking along Third Avenue when I was jumped from behind, beaten, and robbed by two unknown assailants. This incident left me with a broken jaw requiring immediate surgery, and unable to work for the next two months.

Following the incident, the outpouring of love, support, and generosity that I received was just overwhelming.

I would like to thank my family and my fiancée for their continuous love and support over the last few months, the staff at West Coast Home Hardware for their support and generosity, the staff at our local Re/Max office and CUPE local for their generosity during this time.

I would like to give a special thank you to Tara Clydesdale, Erica Watson of Stirling images photography and Sheri Wong for donating their services for my upcoming wedding.

I would finally like to thank the countless other people of Port Alberni, some of whom I have never met, for their outpouring of support and kindness. This proves that even in the wake of tragedy, Port Alberni truly is the community with a heart.

We must lobby for watershed To the Editor,

Like many in our community, I am concerned about protecting our water supply. Recently, Port Alberni City Council said that they will attempt to meet with Island Timberlands and the Ministry of Forests to discuss protecting a portion of the watershed.

The Watershed Forest Alliance has been lobbying for a number of years now to protect McLaughlin Ridge in the watershed. The sticking point here is that the watershed is presently in privately held lands.

The owner’s primary concern is to make profits for their shareholders and as it is private land they can pretty well operate as they

please. The only recourse that the city has is after an event occurs that affects water quality—then the city would have to prove in a court of law that industrial activity was the cause.

It only makes sense that our watershed needs to be protected for now and future generations.

I see two options: The first would be to purchase that portion of the watershed from the city’s water intake to the headwaters.

I don’t see this as viable as the city cannot afford it and I don’t think the province would fund it.

The other problem is that Island Timberlands would lose annual cut resulting in local forestry job loss.

The other better option is the one put forward by the late Glenn Wong and that is to lobby the provincial government to make a swap of Crown lands for the watershed and put the watershed under the direct control and protection of local government.

We, as a community need to come together and lobby vigorously to bring this about. It will take a concerted effort and will not

happen overnight.

Writer forgives despite theft To the Editor,

I am a low income, disabled person.

Someone stole my cedar fencing, which is going to cost me over $500. That’s more than half my monthly income. So, I won’t be able to afford to do so.

This person has violated my sense of well-being and safety in my own home.

Maybe stealing is a way of life for them, or they don’t care about me, or about right and wrong, or about the consequences of their actions.

I care. I even care about them. I choose not to feel like a victim. I choose to wish them well, and hope one day they will become a better person. There are always other choices.

I hope they will change their life and become the best they can be. It’s never too late to make changes.

Harper no good as advocate To the Editor,

is that Scotland’s future should be decided by the Scots themselves, but given that there has been a lot of verbal intervention from abroad, including the Canadian Prime Minister, I feel the obligation to point out a thing or two in my role as a loyal Canadian.

The first is that our own Stephen Harper, the aforementioned PM who came down firmly on the side of the No vote, is the same man who just ratified FIPPA, an investorstate agreement negotiated in secret that ensures Chinese multinationals can sue Canada should we engage in any behaviour that limits their ability to generate profits from their investments in Canada.

He is of the same climate change denying, privatizing, destructive mould that spawned David Cameron and Tony Abbott, who, it seems to me, also implored Scots not to go down the path of independence.

With endorsements like those of Stephen Harper, the Yes side was a sure winner.

If elected, Chopra said that he would work with city council to freeze residential tax rates for the next two years.

“There have been lots of tax increases and there’s too many expenses,” said Chopra, adding that although residential tax hikes are not an option for the next couple of years, he’s “not saying that service will be cut or people will be laid off, we’re looking for other revenue sources.”

He also spoke out against the conflicts that have plagued the mayor and city council in recent years.

down, Chopra said he would work to attract jobs to the community.

“I’m looking for job, jobs, jobs” for this city, he said, citing the Steelhead LNG proposal for a facility at Sarita Bay as one option to add employment opportunities for people in the city.

Chopra said that to “make the community livable, we have to look after the safety of the people, the seniors, the education,” adding that “all those things will come along if we have a vision.”

Mearns’ bid for council will focus on

attracting younger generations into the community while making sure the olders ones are cared for.

There is a “significant number of retirees in this community,” many of whom are on fixed incomes, he said, adding that the city needs to make sure it remains a hospitable place for them.

The Port Alberni native, who has spent his life working in forestry and steel, said that as someone who has worked in the community his entire life and been “in touch with hundreds and hundreds of members of the community” through his union work, he believes that he is in a good position to lead the city forward into the future.

“I do think that there is a need for industrial activity in the community,” Mearns said, adding that he’s not sure that the tourism industry will bring in enough jobs.

Among others already mentioned, he provides assistance to the annual local Fall Fair (for the past 10 years), and the annual A.V. Charity Golf Classic.

In addition, he writes about golf news in the local newspapers on a weekly basis; and for the last eight years, Fagan has helped the Canadian Cancer Society as an engagement coordinator at their local office on Third Avenue. His job is to recruit new volunteers for the society.

During his several decades serving

individuals and organizations in Port Alberni, Fagan has been publicly recognized by those he has served. He has been awarded many certificates of appreciation, trophies and special awards.

He values them all, especially his “Citizen of the Year Award,” by the residents of Fir Park and Echo Villages; the BCHL Volunteer of the Year Award; the AV Volunteer of the Year Award.

“I feel great satisfaction in helping others, especially those who are not able to get around,” he says.

of an industry only date back to the mid 1970’s and 1980’s. But that’s the case with salmon farming which went through experimental times in the 1970’s and really became an organized industry in BC in the 1980’s marked in 1984 Farmers Association. 1984 was a big year. It was the year the first Apple Macintosh computer went on sale, and was the debut of the CD player. Technology has exploded into the world’s top business sector, with Apple being the world’s most valuable company. Most would say that computer technology has seen history’s most rapid progression.

In terms of global presence, aquaculture isn’t actually that far behind – and it’s certainly outlasted the Compact Disc.

Early Infrastructure In the beginning most of BC’s salmon farm sites were centered in the Sunshine Coast area, north of Vancouver. Further more licenses were issued over the next ten years in the areas of Ocean Falls, the Sunshine Coast, Cowichan Bay, Alberni Inlet, Barkley Sound, Indian Arm, Alert Bay, Redonda Island and Tofino. Initial optimism was based on the success of rearing juveniles but the technology for cultivation of adult salmon had yet to be developed.

compared to the systems used on today’s modern farms, and many of the farming practices used today weren’t known back then. One example is the small pens at the right side of the photo, those were the pens used to grow juvenile salmon, before they were transferred to the larger pens.

On today’s farms smolts are reared in land-based recirculating systems for the first half of their life before being transferred (at a much larger size than in the 1980’s) to marine based farms.

The early days of BC salmon farming were characterized by many small companies operating one or two farm sites, very little working capital, no ability to get proper financing – it was a challenging business in its infancy.

While many of the company names have changed: Globe Sea Farms, Sea Silver Marifarms, Georgia Sea Farms, Suncoast Salmon, Kraft Marifarms, Quartz

Technology in salmon farming has seen a rapid progression through continual innovation. Salmon farmers in BC were true pioneers, developing systems and techniques that were at the leading edge of the “blue revolution”. The early days were certainly low-tech though, here salmon farmer Odd Grydeland, circa 1986, is shown doing paperwork on his farm. That’s not to say there wasn’t some technology – much of the paperwork back then was done on what’s known as Rite in the Rain paper.

In the early 1980’s, farms were run largely as smallscale operations, with small businesses or even families running individual sites. For the first 15 years of the business there wasn’t much growth.

Every farming practice is intended to help stressfree, healthy fish grow. Keeping the environment healthy is key to the success of our fish. This includes employing the latest in high definition camera technology to get an up-close look at how the fish are behaving and feeding. Salmon farming is part of the paperless revolution as well with tablet computers used to gather real-time data.

Advancements in technology have been key to the success of modern salmon farming and will be key to future growth and sustainability. Technological change has made sea-based farms more secure, reduced the feed requirements of fish, almost eliminated the need for antibiotic use, and steadily improved the economic sustainability of salmon farming.

Salmon spend about half their lifecycle in the ocean farm growing to a final market size of about five to six kilograms. The pens the fish live in are large and provide ample space for the fish to grow – in fact of

Lifecycle Approach BC’s salmon farming sector is fully integrated producing its own brood fish for the eggs needed in hatcheries. The eggs are hatched in the fall and then held in land-based freshwater hatcheries and freshwater lake sites for 12 to 18 months.

Farmers follow the natural lifecycle of a salmon: moving them from freshwater to saltwater within a year of hatching.

Today’s hatcheries are also much more technologically advanced. Each is equipped with vaccination facilities and medical laboratories, and all hatcheries are focused on reducing their usage of fresh water. BC’s farming sector has largely turned to the innovative use of the recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) where freshwater is filtered and reused. This reduces fresh water requirements by more than 90%.

Farm-raised salmon are amongst the most efficient users of feed; converting feed to “meat” at less than 1.2 : 1.0 (meaning 1.2 kg of feed produce 1.0 kg of salmon). This efficiency is because salmon are cold blooded (conserve energy) and because they are neutrally buoyant in the water so they don’t require large bones to support their structure.

Total BC salmon farming tenures remain unchanged since 2008 at 120, with 64-75 operating and 35-45 resting at any given time. The total såace occupied by salmon farms on BC’s coasts is approximately 100 hectares, which is smaller than Stanley Park.

As regulation and standards increased and technology developed, the capital requirements became too costly for many of these businesses to survive.

This led to more companies taking charge of multiple farm sites – and continued convergence through the end of the 1990’s and early 2000s.

Lessons learned in those early years have been transferred to the newer generation of salmon farmers by those early pioneers.

Today’s farmers are highly educated, skilled and trained in fish husbandry.

Evolving Practices Salmon farming began in BC with an opportunity – excess Coho and Chinook eggs from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) emerging wild salmon enhancement program. DFO began to test net-pen technology, and the performance of salmon under farming conditions, in the mid 1970’s at its Departure Bay, Nanaimo Pacific Biologic Station. Getting them to the farm was a big challenge back then, as shown in this photo. Today sophisticated tanker truck and well boat systems are used and transfer practices are governed through global leading bio-security programs.

The Pioneers were rearing salmon to a pretty small size back then, based on a portion size of (250-350g) similar to

the practice in freshwater trout farms. They were primarily Coho, Chinook and Sockeye species – that’s what they had to work with. Practices continued to evolve though, as global competitors shared best practices. A select group of BC government and business leaders, along with researchers travelled to Norway in the mid 80’s with Oddvin Vedo an economic development officer for the Sunshine Coast Regional District to familiarize them on the Norwegian salmon farming industry. They learned that Norway and Scotland farmers were rearing Atlantic salmon to adult size in net pens, so BC farmers extended the grow-out cycle. It probably seemed pretty simple at the time, however the farmers discovered that Coho matured after one sea winter in saltwater and were less suitable for harvest at adult size and although Chinook produced a

larger harvestable product they also had a high percentage of maturing males after one sea winter. Maturing fish are not the best for sale – similar to a salmon ready to spawn.

Today in British Columbia, 95 per cent of salmon production is the Atlantic species, because it is a hearty salmon with that grows most efficiently, and has a more docile temperament than Pacific salmon species.

Government regulators were comfortable with the rearing of Atlantics in pens because they knew that the potential environmental risks associated with any escape would be low, having failed at trying to colonize the species in the Pacific in the early part of the 20th Century.

By 1981, the total harvest of farmed salmon in BC was 180 tonnes. Today the sector produces about 70,000 tonnes.

Living off the bounty of the land might seem like something that only happens out in the wilderness but Janette Cormier and Lonnie Olsen have been doing it for years.

When the couple lived in a more rural location, Cormier said that “more than half, including wild meat like deer, bear, salmon.”

Now that they live within the city, it’s a little harder.

Barclay Hotel on Monday, Sept. 22.

The event, which was hosted by the Young Professionals of the Alberni Valley, aimed to increase participants’ awareness of wild foods and to give them an idea of what plants and fungi are edible, and which are not.

“The best way is to learn from someone who is doing it all the time and has been doing it for a while, so with plant identification walks and mushroom walks,” Cormier said.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs play their first home game of the 2014-15 B.C. Hockey League season this Saturday, Sept. 27 at Weyerhaeuser Arena when the Powell River Kings come to town.

The Bulldogs lost their first two games of the season last weekend at the Bauer BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack, but they were close contests.

In their first game, a 4-3 loss to Penticton Vees, The Bulldogs played a physical game with speed, chipping away at a 4-0 Vees’ lead to come within one.

They scored their first goal of the game on the power play with one second left in the second period, and carried the momentum through the third period.

Veteran Dylan Haugen drew the ‘Dogs to within one with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 9:40 of the third period, but Port Alberni fell short.

Sixty-six players teed it up in the second annual senior men’s tournament held at the Alberni Golf Club on the weekend. The field was split into two age groups, “A” group consisted of men 55 to 65 while the “B” group were 66 plus.

The overall winner with a two-day gross total of 144 was Murray McAllindon of Gorge Vale. Alberni’s Wolf Suhr was the over all net winner coming in with 135.

In the A division first low gross from Duncan Meadows was Bob McNab, while Alberni’s Proban Rasmussen won the first low gross in the B division.

VALE, Terry Terry passed away in Port Alberni on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the age of 67.

Terry is predeceased by parents Maurice and Gladys, and sister, Anne. He is survived by son; Daniel (Shawna); granddaughter Desiree; brothers, Ed Walcot (Wendy) and Art (Teresa); sisters Emily and Eunice as well as numerous nieces, and nephews.

Born and raised in Port Alberni, Terry worked in various positions in forestry and construction in and around the Alberni Valley, most notably at the Shell Oil plant, J.W. Berry Trucking and Berry & Vale Contracting. Terry will be remembered as a free bird that life could not cage. He loved the adventures life brought and enjoyed anything with an engine and wheels. He did what most of us could not do and lived his life with no constraints. With a wild heart, he took the path less traveled and for this he will greatly be missed. Terry will also be remembered for his compassionate nature and his urge to help everyone and anyone even if it meant going without himself According to Terry’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held at a later date. Cremation. Terry will be placed in Greenwood Cemetery.

DAVID ROY HANSEN (February 21, 1941 – September 19, 2014)

It is with great sadness that we announce Dave’s sudden passing. Dave is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Bette, three children – Janice (Paul), Darren (Liz) and Valerie (Matt) and his grandchildren - Christian, Rachel, Sienna, Talia and Luke.

Dave and Bette returned to Bette’s home town, the Alberni Valley, shortly after their marriage in Victoria. Dave worked at the pulp mill prior to becoming a full-time firefighter and ambulance attendant in 1968. Dave retired in 1999. The friendship of his fellow firefighters meant a lot to him.

Dave was a great sports fan. Although sadly he never saw his Canucks win the cup, he was thrilled to meet his hockey idol, Gordie Howe. He was a history and movie buff and the guy you wanted on your team in a game of trivial pursuit.

Although he couldn’t sing a note, he loved music, and often DJ’ed for raucous parties with his many friends. In his retirement, he enjoyed golf with his friends at the Cherry Creek golf course, traveling with Bette, and spending time with his family. He was happiest tending his beautiful property at Sproat Lake with his beloved Kit Kat at his side.

It is, therefore, fitting that he spent his final moments at the lake’s edge with the warm afternoon sunshine on his face. He will be dearly missed.

A Celebration of Life will take place at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 27th, 2014, at the Italian Canadian Centre, 4065 6th Avenue, Port Alberni, BC. In lieu of flowers and cards, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Dave. We also encourage everyone to offer a memory of Dave or a message for the family on the pages that will be available at the Celebration of Life.

RIGHT: Sproat Lake Dragon Boat Society has had another successful year-end regatta this past Sunday.

Through the regatta we were able to donate to the Port Alberni School Breakfast Program, and partner up with the ADSS Girls Rugby team.

The next one will be in Toronto in 2016.

Alberni Valley Museum director Jamie Morton unveils ‘Sproat Lake (Klitsa Mountain)’, a painting by famed artist Emily Carr, on display this week.

The Alberni Valley Museum gained an invaluable offering last week when a patron donated an original Emily Carr painting called Sproat Lake (Klitsa Mountain).

The piece is an oilon-panel completed by the famed British Columbia painter between 1908-1909.

According to museum director Jamie Morton, Carr was likely inspired by the multiple trips she made to the west coast, which included several stays at Klitsa Lodge in the 1920s and 1930s and a visit to an Aboriginal village near Ucluelet

in 1899.

While Morton isn’t sure what perspective the painting may have been created from, he thinks it may be a view of Klitsa Lodge from somewhere along Taylor Arm. Morton is happy to have the piece not only because it depicts a beloved landmark but because this is the first time in years it will be displayed publicly.

“The picture has been in private hands, it hasn’t been in public collections,” said Morton.

The painting was most recently owned

by Ralph Tieleman, a Tofino art collector, who donated it to the museum.

“It’s not typically what people think of as an Emily Carr painting, her 1920s, 1930s paintings are more typically what people equate with Carr’s work, but that was after she travelled to France and was influenced by postimpressionists.”

This piece was painted before Carr’s time in France while she was living in Vancouver and teaching art to children in order to make a living.

That 1910 trip was what changed Carr’s style.

“She maintained her interest in landscapes and Aboriginal themes [after the trip] but her style changed significantly.”

While the painting might not be a typical “Emily Carr”, “...it is an iconic view of the Alberni Valley, Sproat Lake and it’s an iconic artist.”

The museum plans to include the painting in another exhibit next fall.

“We’re going to use it as a focus in an exhibit about outdoor recreation in the Alberni Valley,” Morton said.

Longtime resident and local well known artist Shelley Penner is the Rollin Art Centre’s current art exhibitor.
