the West Show and Sale" did a great job drawing it and therefore the Board picked the art piece for the 2015 poster! Thanks for sharing this with us Gordon.

Now for the not so good news ... unfortunately we have had to raise the prices for the 2015 Festival a little because the venue has increased the rental charges.

The Festival is not put on to make money, but we do need to cover our costs if we can do this again next year. We've only had a few price increases over the years and all were small. In fact we haven't had any price increases since 2011 which I think is pretty good, and hopefully Festival goers will say the entertainment is improving every year, and that the Festival just keeps getting better. Tickets will go on sale November 1st.

Here are the new prices: Weekend Pass - $75 Includes everything (except the dinner theatre) all weekend!

Evening Show - $35 Includes regular evening performance and daytime admission!

Friday, Saturday, or Sunday Dinner Theatre - $30 upgrade with a weekend pass - Includes dinner!

Friday or Saturday Dinner Theatre Only - $65 - Includes one evening performance and dinner!

Day Pass (Friday & Saturday) - $20 - Includes daytime entertainment, trade show, & seminars!

Day Pass (Sunday) - $15 - Includes daytime entertainment, and trade show!

Now for some more good news ... especially if you live in Alberta, and especially if you don't like winter driving! Frontier Bus Lines has put a tour together leaving Alberta on March 11th and staying in Kamloops for the whole weekend.

2014 WMA Award of Excellence Kathy and Mark McMillan nominees announced From the editors

Nancy Roman, Saddle Up magazine, said in her last column From the Editor, "It is true, the older you get the time flies faster." Well if this is the case I must be really old because "time flies fast" is definitely an understatement. In fact the next issue of this newsletter will be out for Christmas and the one after that will be the program for the 2015 Kamloops Cowboy Festival. Seems like we just had the 2014 Festival.

Speaking of which, in this newsletter we'll give you a sneak preview of some of the performers we have

in store for the 19th Annual Kamloops Cowboy Festival and we're happy to say we'll also show you the 2015 poster.

There's a couple of reviews, one from Cariboo Country Night at Watch Lake, and one on the BC Bull Riding Finals in 100 Mile House. Also a little note on Barkerville's Cowboy and Drover Jubilee and how it went.

Everything seems to be shaping up nicely for the 2015 Kamloops Cowboy Festival: prices are set (a small increase in ticket prices this year) and tickets will go on sale November 1st, entertainment is mostly in place, and we have a bus tour coming out from Alberta this year! Even the Festival Trade

Show has bookings already.

There's already interest in the BCCHS student scholarships, the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame, and the Joe Marten Memorial Award ... all of which I'm thrilled to see!

All in all I think 2014 has been a great year for us and I'm thinking 2015 will be as good or better!

Our very own Mag Mawhinney is in the running!

The 2014 Western Music Association Annual Convention will be held November 12th to 16th at the Marriott Albuquerque. This convention will include their Award Show Saturday night which will be hosted by Andy & Jim Nelson. Mag is in the top five for Female Poet of the Year. The other nominees for 2014 include; Teresa Burleson, Sam DeLeeuw, Susie Knight, and Diane Tribitt. We wish them all good luck ... but I guess we have a specially little extra good luck wish for Mag :-).

Here's the criteria for both male and female poet of the year: • A person exhibiting the ability to write original Cowboy/Western poetry or verse, who writes or expresses himself/herself with imaginative power and beauty of thought, language and form.

• A person who performs their original work but may occasionally perform the works of others.

• A person whose performances are delivered to live audiences with professionalism and accuracy.

• A person who has had a minimum of 10 paid performances in the last 15 months of nomination.

• A person who has shown the ability to enable audiences to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Western lifestyle and history (with accuracy) through their poetry performances.

Mag Mawhinney is one of the 2014 WMA award of Excellence nominees.

The Horse Barn announces a new award at Watch Lake September 13

Keeper of the West

Tom at the Horse Barn heard Ryan Fritz do a song on the Horse Barn Stage during the Festival in March that he not only liked, but the name really caught his attention - "Keeper of the West". What a perfect name for an award that could be presented to a musician or poet who wrote something that truly fit the BCCHS mandate which is the meaning behind these words.

Tom is always looking to help the Festival and the Society in any way he can and with this new idea he approached us and of course we thought it was super idea!

So keep your eyes open Festival weekend ... anyone singing, or doing cowboy poetry, at the Horse

Barn during the Festival or in any of the pre-Festival shows could be eligible if ... they have a NEW song or poem. The voting will be done by public opinion (through a ballet box) and decided on by Horse Barn staff and an appointed judge(s). The main thing is that the material must be new, and must fit the idea behind the wording of the award - keeping our western traditions alive.

Wow! Another sold out Cariboo Country Night. Folks all commented on how much fun they had, how good the entertainment was, and how good the BBQ steak dinner was. A few people said it was one of the best yet.

I've put on a lot of concerts over the years, and a lot of them have been sold out shows, but I don't remember having to turn down people in the numbers we did this year. We had to squeeze in extra tables and chairs to try and accommodate the 115 that did get tickets but I'm betting we could have sold another 30 tickets or more on Saturday morning alone!

The entertainment this year was Hugh McLennan, Leslie Ross, and Jason Rus- Cowboy entertainers; Hugh McLennan, Leslie Ross and Jason Ruscheinsky all performed a set at the Cariboo Country Night. cheinsky - and they all did a super job.

Photo submitted Each did a set before dinner, then Jason and Leslie formed a duet for their second set entertainer with humour, wit, and a voice that sounds and Hugh followed with another set. At the end of amazing. I think the biggest surprise to everyone was Ja- steaks, and the Clinton 4H club, who lent us their son (he had never been to CCN before and many had humungous BBQ, and to the volunteer cooks, the never heard him) - this kid has talent. He's a natural meal was awesome - complete with desert.

Louisiana Hayride fall 2014 tour Here's some info from Lori and Gil Risiling to keep us up to date on their Fall Tour. Hello to all of our Hayride friends!

We have been rehearsing hard and are ready to bring our new Louisiana Hayride Fall 2014 show to you! We're excited to hit the road again and following are the towns

we'll be coming to. At your request, we have kept your favorite characters in the show, so you'll be enjoying the antics of Hank Williams, the distinct voice of Willie Nelson, the incredible vocals of Patsy Cline and the classic songs from Roy Orbison. We've added a new character to the fall

show, Tammy Wynette, who will be singing a couple of her memorable hits. Other new artists we'll be featuring songs from, are Merle Haggard, Red Foley, and we have a special tribute to Glen Campbell. We've kept in a few of the favorite artists from previous shows such as Johnny Cash and Jerry

Lee Lewis. As you can see, once again this show will be jam-packed with great music, interesting stories and LOTS of fun!

Barkerville hosts annual Cowboy and Drover Jubilee From all accounts Sept. 5 to 7 was another great weekend as Barkerville hosted its Annual Cowboy & Drover Jubilee. I wasn't able to attend, and I didn't get any official reports from Barkerville, but I did get some firsthand feedback - all of which was good.

We had a busy weekend with friends stopping in ... all headed to

or from Barkerville ... all of who were entertainers. Things started with Bud Webb heading north on Thursday and he spent the night here. I got an email from.... hmmm, let's just say an anonymous prankster. He/she asked me if I would phone the hotel where everyone was staying as they wanted to play a little joke on Bud.

Sunday, after things wound down up there, Ed and Diane Wahl stopped in on their way home. They both reported that it was an excellent weekend with bigger numbers and a better audience - very appreciative audience. Oh ya ... and they informed me that apparently Bud's room has been sabotaged before he arrived. It appeared to be along a

Halloween theme with spider webs and scary things hanging around waiting for his arrival :-).

Monday morning the Hanson Family stopped in on their way south and they all said they had a great time and that the whole event was super. Jeremy Willis joined the list of performers this year, Gordie West returned by popular

demand, and the Hansons reported that both were very well received.

The Hanson Family were on their way to Kamloops to play in a senior's home on their way back to the States.

So all in all good job Glen and James and everyone else that had a hand in putting together the Barkerville Cowboy & Drover Jubilee!

BC BULL RIDING

Bull riding finals held in 100 Mile House This is the second year in a row that the BC Bull Riding Finals was held in 100 Mile House, and it's the second year in a row that the event was a great show! Spectators could go to bull riding by paying admission to the 100 Mile House Fall Fair. This was a super deal as then they could take in the fair and the bull riding.

Things started out at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, with the first round - 18 bull riders. After the first round nine cowgirls competed in a barrel racing challenge and then four teams of professional Wild Horse Racers tried to catch, saddle, and ride a wild horse past the barrel. This was all followed by the second round of bull riding.

At 1 p.m. Saturday things got underway for the second day and once again 18 bull riders tried to top their bulls. Then the barrel racers and the wild horse racers each had a go again, followed by the final 18 bull riders competing in the fourth round.

That's a total of 72 potential bull rides over the two days and you can imagine it was an exciting event. The bulls were supplied by 100 Mile House's Dave Atkinson (Diamond D Bulls) and C+ Rodeo Stock from 150 Mile.

The results from the BC Bull Riding Finals are as follows; 1st place was Jorey Holmes with a score of 237.5 on three bulls

The Mane Event - Chilliwack October 24th - 26th, 2014 We're getting excited again as it's getting closer, quickly! It looks like it will be another awesome weekend in Chilliwack for anyone with any interest in horses - even if it's just to look at them. There's a great line-up of clinicians again this year, the show is one of the best in the industry, and the Trainers Challenge (our favourite part) should be spectacular as always.
