The Regional District of the Central Kootenay gave the Ministry of Environment’s Bob McDonald a strong message at the Sept. 18 meeting — it wants to be at the top of the waiting list for Multi Material BC (MMBC) services and it wants taxpayers’ money back.

McDonald, the manger of packing and print paper program implementation for the ministry, spoke to the board last week to update it on the MMBC program that the government legislated across the province on May 19.

He admitted the rollout of the program has been a problem and could not tell the board when RDCK residents can expect to receive services that are supposed to be funded by companies producing packaging and print material in what has been set up as an industry stewardship program.

Swan Valley Honey owners planning to expand

Early in their life together Doug and Nora Crumback couldn’t have imagined owning a large honey-producing operation. But with two years as owners of Swan Valley Honey under their belts, the parents of seven grown children say they couldn’t be happier.

Theirs has been an unlikely journey. Doug, an air traffic controller with the Royal Canadian Air Force and widowed father of four, met Nora, mother of three, at church when he was stationed at Comox. A forced transfer to Cold Lake didn’t hold much appeal for the new couple, though, and soon they were on the move to Summerland, where they bought Doug’s parents’ orchard.

After 15 years as orchardists, they sold the property and started looking for a new opportunity.

They had some experience with beekeeping.

“I contacted Ministry of Agriculture people in Victoria and asked if there were any opportunities for commercial beekeeping in B.C.,” Doug recalled as he sat in the dining room of their Lakeview home. “They referred me to Doug Knight, who they said might be thinking of retiring.”

By the time Doug and Nora were ready to start exploring their options, they had a list of other possibilities. They first visited Grand Forks and the next stop was Creston.

“We found this property” — a huge shop that is now their honey production and storage facility being a major selling feature — “talked to Doug Knight and realized the Creston Valley is a great spot for bees,” he said. “And we stopped looking.”

The Crumbacks worked with Knight for a year to learn the business and now are fully engaged as beekeepers and honey producers.

Doug has immersed himself in maintaining 300 hives that are distributed at various locations around the Creston Valley. Nora is the marketer and has become a fixture at the Creston Valley

Farmers’ Market each Saturday. She also travels the Kootenays to add retailers that will carry Swan Valley Honey products.

“The honey sells itself,” Nora laughs. “People love the flavour and keep coming back for more.”

At the market, her regular customers range from small children who want to sample to teen boys who love the chewy comb honey to foodaware moms who use only natural sweeteners to seniors who are transported to earlier days by the sight of fresh local honey products.

“It’s just so rewarding,” she said. “Connecting with people is really what this is all about.”

With each hive producing about 125 pounds a year, Nora has a lot of product to move. But about 95 per cent is sold right here in the Kootenays, most of it at the market and from their property.

RCMP destroy 1,750-plant grow-op

Creston RCMP responded to 52 calls for service from Sept. 15-21, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday.

September 15 •Police informed a resort operator on Pilot Bay Road that an issue with a camper who left without paying for a telephone charge is a matter for civil court.

•A woman reported her purse went missing in the 15th Avenue North area.

•A 90-year-old male died suddenly of apparently natural causes in his Ash Street residence.

•A truck left parked with keys in it near Canyon-Lister Road while the owner was haying was stolen. It was later located near the Rykerts border crossing.

•A Simons Road resident in medical distress was transported to the hospital.

September 16 •Police received a complaint about an erratic driver who might have been intoxicated in the Seventh Avenue North area. He was not located.

•The owner of an uninsured vehicle on Westview Road agreed to move it when contacted by police.

•Police attended a Riondel Road residence to serve a subpoena on behalf of New Westminster police.

•Minor damage resulted to a vehicle that collided with a deer on Highway 3A near Kuskonook.

•A Campbell Avenue resident reported paying $217 for repairs when he responded to a pop-up warning on his computer screen. He then called police saying he thought it might have been a scam. Police agreed.

•Police delivered a summons on behalf of Revenue Canada to a resident of Crystal Road in Kitchener.

•A white Ford F-350 pickup reported to be driving erratically on Northwest Boulevard was not located.

•A vehicle driving on the Kootenay Lake forest service road north of Riondel caught the edge of a ditch and rolled over. No injuries were reported.

•Two males, ages 57 and 64, were involved in a consensual fight on Simon Road. Alcohol was a factor.

From page 3 “We could easily sell nothing but comb honey (which includes some bees’ wax) because it is so popular,” she said, but liquid honey production is more efficient and cost-effective.

Doug said that as he learns more about beekeeping his focus has shifted from productivity to colony health. Last winter he saw a 50 per cent loss in colonies. But while much of the news about colony collapse has focused on pesticides, he is convinced the health of bees is reliant on many factors. He has been working with a Vernon producer who has reduced his own losses to under 10 per cent annually.

“Losing half of our bees every year is not sustainable,” he said. “Across the country there is an average 30 per cent loss, which is only marginally sustainable.”

When a colony dies over the winter it means new queen bees and workers have to be purchased, and it takes time and money to rebuild the population.

Focusing on colony health is one approach, but another is to breed queen bees locally. It allows him to replenish Swan Valley Honey colonies and also to sell to other smaller producers. He has also moved into the supply business and is selling related products, which helps diversify business income.

•An outdoor marijuana grow-op was the target of a police raid on Topaz Creek forest service road. A total of 1,750 plants were destroyed.

September 17 •A 20th Avenue South resident complained about unwanted phone calls from an unknown caller.

•A grandson causing a disturbance at a Seventh Avenue North residence agreed to spend the night elsewhere.

•A wallet was reported lost or stolen on Northwest Boulevard.

•Police received calls from both drivers who got into a dispute over a parking space on Canyon Street. Each told a distinctly different story.

•A vehicle was reported abandoned on Maryland Creek Forest Service Road near Kootenay Pass.

•An Eighth Avenue South residence reported a Jeep driving erratically and possibly being involved in a collision but police were unable to locate it or any evidence of a crash.

September 18 •A female driver who was stopped because she was driving at night without headlights was found to have been consuming alcohol. She blew a fail on a roadside screening device and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and her car was impounded for 30 days. She was held in police cells overnight for her own safety, in part because she had nowhere to stay.

•Police have forwarded an ongoing trespassing case to Crown counsel to explore charges against a male. For more than 20 years, he has been in dispute with a commercial property owner of a quarry site on Crawford Creek Road.

•Loud music at an Eighth Avenue South residence was the source in another in a series of complaints.

•Police issued a subpoena to a Hagey Road resident on behalf of Saskatoon police.

September 19 •A subpoena was served on behalf of Delta police.

•The owner of a vehicle with expired plates was issued a ticket on 10th Avenue North.

•Police attended an Evans Road resi-

dence to assist Grande Prairie, Alta., RCMP with a harassment investigation.

•Police attended to ensure the safety of a female leaving an abusive relationship.

•A complaint was received about a silver Mazda from Alberta passing on a double solid line on Highway 3A near Sirdar.

•A witness reported seeing a female screaming at a driver in a brown fourdoor sedan on Erickson Road. She then got in the car and it drove away.

•After conducting a well-being check on a male on 35th Avenue North police found family members to provide care for him.

•A male reported to be shooting off fireworks near Haskins Road expressed surprise that someone had taken offense and reported him. He voluntarily stopped and left the area.

September 20 •Police attended a Highway 21 South location to assist fire departments during a structure fire.

•Police are investigating a report of two males, possibly intoxicated, in a vehicle driving erratically and at speeds up to 160 km/h on Highway 3/95.

•A female pedestrian reported nearly being hit by a blue Dodge on Canyon Street.

September 21 •A bicycle rider flipped his bike when a dog ran out in front of him on Highway 3A near Kootenay Bay. The owner of the dog was apologetic and will attempt to keep his pet in check.

•A driver was issued a verbal warning after he was reported to have driven erratically on Helen Street and thrown garbage from his vehicle. He denied throwing garbage out.

•A Devon Street female reported receiving two photos of a male’s body parts on her cellphone. It was determined that they had been sent to the wrong phone.

•A problem with an intoxicated male at a Highway 21 South residence was resolved with the help of police.

•A report of an eastbound silver Dodge pickup passing on double solid lines on Highway 3/95 was passed on to Cranbrook RCMP.

Bees are needed not only to produce honey, but to pollinate crops, including fruit trees. Some plant flowers don’t produce much nectar, but bees are needed to pollinate the flowers so they will produce fruit.

“The Creston Valley can probably support about 1,000 colonies,” he estimated.

So there is room for the Crumbacks’ plans to eventually expand their own operation to about 700 hives. To that end, one of their sons (their kids are all adults now, some with families) and his wife are moving to Creston to join in the business.

More than doubling production will involve much more labour, but Nora isn’t concerned about the market becoming saturated.

“The demand is very strong and our honey tastes great — there is such a diversity of plant life in this valley.”

Doug compares honey to wine, where complexities in the taste make for a more desirable product.

“Bees on the prairies are more productive,” he said. “Colonies in canola fields can produce 200 pounds a year.

But we have customers who visit from the prairies because they like the flavour of our honey better.”

Beekeeping involves a lot of heavy lifting and hard labour. And it takes a tremendous effort to keep the production facility clean while the honey is being extracted from frames. Otherwise, workers could find themselves with

shoes stuck to the floor.

But much of their satisfaction comes from interaction with people, Doug said. As he travels around the valley to tend to his “bee yards” he gets to see first hand the importance of bees in the eyes of others.

“In one bee yard, whenever I visit there are two kids watching everything I do,” he smiled.

Across from their yard are 30 colonies and the boy (about five) and his sister (about three) are fascinated by their fuzzy, flying neighbours.

“They’ve seen it all,” he said. “The boy says he wants to be a beekeeper when he grows up.”

In this agricultural valley, Doug and Nora said they are grateful for the support they receive. Nora speaks of customers who not only purchase products but spread the word about Swan Valley Honey to family and friends. Doug needs space on farms for his bee yards around the valley, and he values the relationships that give him access to the properties.

As they sit in their living room, with its view to the west and north, the Crumbacks show no signs of regret about the life they have created for themselves in the Creston Valley.

“We have some wonderful people who work seasonally for us,” Nora said.

“And we are providing pure honey to people who really appreciate its value.

We feel blessed to be here.”

these services and others that residents demand with an eight per cent share of total tax revenues. The feds take a 50 per cent cut and the provinces grab the other 42 per cent.

Provinces also help fund the Big 5 services in various ways and so does the federal government, to a lesser extent. But they do so in a less direct and reliable way, often in the form of grants that come and go as the political winds change direction.

Water is a good example of how things work. Years ago, after a long and divisive controversy, the province forced construction of the Arrow Creek water treatment plant. The state-of-the-art, and very expensive, project emits safe (by provincial standards) water that is then delivered through a system of pipes, the main line of which is about a century old.

Aside from those old pipes’ influence on the quality of water, they also leak like the proverbial sieve. The cost to replace that main line is, if memory serves, about $8 million.

Infrastructure is pricy stuff and most reports suggest that Canada has done a poor job of keeping it up to date. It is a safe assumption that local governments simply can’t afford to make the necessary upgrades out of their eight per cent of tax dollars.

My understanding of local elected officials is that they are acutely aware that there is only one taxpayer. The problem is that they are, politically, the weakest in the fierce competition for each tax dollar collected. Personally, I would sooner see a larger portion of my taxes being controlled and spent locally. I know exactly where to go and who to yell at when I am dissatisfied.

Outside-thebox thinking needed for downtown To the Editor: We live in an awkward time in history. The future for most retailers looks bleak, and the small-town family-run business is dying. I love Creston, and more than the beauty of the valley, I care for and love its people. I love walking downtown and talking with people. I also love spending time talking with business owners, and throwing ideas around about what our town’s future looks like. Recently I overheard some tourists talking about moving in their retirement (one couple from the west, and one the east). These future retirees are looking for more than just the beauty of a community, they want amenities.

I had a conversation a couple of years ago with Creston’s current mayor, in which I stole about 30 minutes of his time. I had to remind him that things are much different than they were 30 years ago. You see, 25

years ago, I worked for and managed a furniture store, and at that time most furniture stores were operating on 50-60 points (100 per cent plus markup) — now, for any store to be competitive, they are operating on less than 12-20 points. You simply can’t afford to be in business. Volume, volume, volume was being pushed down our throat, and overproduction became rampant.

Companies are being forced to sell things like phones that do everything except offer a decent living for the person who handles the product.

I urge us as a community to look outside the box. Let’s think of something together. If you are an entrepreneur, and want to start something in Creston, I am open for advice (at no charge). I don’t want to be like the 700plus people that make their living outside of Creston (although the pressure is on). Can we come together as a community to help revitalize our downtown or does it even matter? I look forward to dialogue, and am open to any calls, or maybe a public forum to discuss and put things on the table.

And a sincere thank you to Bahamas General Store, Wear Withall and all other businesses that have moved on from downtown over the past year, your dedication to the Creston Valley is not unnoticed.

Go Gos calling it quits after nine years To the Editor: Having had no new members and finding the work too hard for the same group of oldies to continue, with deep sadness the Creston Go Gos (formerly the GoGo Grannies) non-profit organization has to say farewell.

Since April of 2005, with this amazing community’s support in all our fundraising endeavors, we have managed to send to the Stephen Lewis Foundation over $60,500. For this we give heartfelt thanks to the community, our supporters and all the Go Gos’ hardworking members.

We were one of the original six Go Go groups in Canada; there are now over 300. The logo we had created for our group is used in many of the other groups across Canada. Donations can still be sent to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

Do not praise self at others’ expense

The seventh Zen precept of ethical behavior is about cultivating and encouraging self and others to be the best we can be. While rejoicing in one's wholesome qualities and deeds is natural and health promoting, praising oneself or seeking personal gain at the expense of others arises out of a misunderstanding of the interdependent nature of self.

The seventh precept is interesting because it suggests an exchange of self and others. It points out that one should not praise oneself while slandering others because to do so is to cling to self-centeredness. We are often afraid of other-centeredness because we feel that others will take advantage. In my experience, the opposite is true. When I open to others and am genuinely concerned for them, they will respond in kind.

Adults often carry strong judgments about others and express them with vehemence anti-Semitism, racism, sexism, homophobia and nationalism.

Homophobia is really the only one correctly named, since the word points to an unacknowledged fear in the one making judgments. The use of the word “phobia” acknowledges that judgement of others is rooted in the person carrying the judgement.

We can break this precept silently by being ever so slightly judgmental about someone else’s looks, clothing, behaviour or beliefs. Every time we judge another, we are demonstrating the truth found in the phrase, “When there is one

finger pointing, there are three looking back.” We criticize in others what we reject in ourselves.

What does “praising self” have to do with this? When we praise ourselves at the expense of others we set up a hierarchy in which we — not surprisingly — are on top. There is something interesting about this selfelevation. When we blame someone for being careless with our possessions, for example, a flash of satisfying anger flares up. At that moment we are innocent, pure, above the other.

We have praised ourselves, even if we are hardly conscious of it, and it lasts

for only a few seconds. That anger buzz can happen even when there is a very ordinary anger present.

As Zen trainees develop their Zen practice they move into a spiritual maturity, which takes them out of praising self at the expense of others and moves them into accepting responsibility. But it’s responsibility in a profound sense of the word. It’s responsibility that arises from deeply realizing our oneness with all beings. They take responsibility for their own situation.

“Wait, wait,” we say. “Aren’t those who conditioned us responsible for this present suffering?”

In some ways this is true, but we will never be free if we stay caught in blaming others for our circumstances. It’s only by assuming responsibility for our whole lives that we become free and fully compassionate.

Suggested practice: The next time you notice yourself judging another ask, “What I am not tolerating in myself?”

When you find the answer to that question, refrain from turning that judgment against yourself in the form of guilt.

(Revelation 12:4-9) Daniel 8 sees the future of the little horn’s opposition to the “Prince of the host,” the sanctuary and its services. Its leader claims equality with God and the authority to forgive sin.

Pagan Rome literally destroyed God’s earthly sanctuary, the temple in Jerusalem in 70 AD. It was also

responsible for crucifying Jesus and persecuting His followers.

Christian Rome’s opposition to God and His sanctuary also persecuted believers during the “dark ages.” We have already seen from Daniel 7 that it would be supreme for 1,260 years.

It also substituted a counterfeit Sabbath (Exodus 20:8), claiming that it has the authority to change God’s law (Daniel 7:25); put a system of priests and saints (1 Timothy 2:5) in place of Jesus, our High Priest; made a counterfeit daily sacrifice (Hebrews 9:25-28) in place of Jesus who died once, and for all time, for our salvation; and made a counterfeit gospel, making salvation a matter of good works, pilgrimages, penances and indulgences in place of resting in what Jesus has already done for us, and is doing for us.

Although the Rebels ultimately won, Dubois felt the Thunder Cats’ level of play was much better that night.

“Unlike Thursday and Friday, overall the game was something we walked away feeling pretty positive about,” he said.

“We’re a different team than last year,” Dubois added. “We’re not as skilled, and we really have to work to compete for scoring chances.”

To that end, a new forward joined the team on the weekend, Lien Miller-Jeannotte, a Fort St. John native who is a “sharp” player.

“He’s going to be a really effective top six forward for us,” said Dubois.

This weekend, the Thunder Cats will again play three games, this time on a road trip and hosted by the Princeton Posse (Friday), Kelowna Chiefs (Saturday) and North Okanagan Knights (Sunday).

“It will be our first look at the other conference,” said Dubois. “The excitement level should be high, knowing we don’t want to go much longer without a win on the board. … We kind of figured out the level we need to play at and it’s a case of reproducing that. If we do, I think it will be a good trip.

NFB film at library examining documentary propaganda CRESTON VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY

How does propaganda shape our image of ourselves? How does government use propaganda to sway a nation’s opinion and influence a people’s support?

Come on out to the Creston Valley Public Library’s screening of the National Film Board’s Shameless Propaganda on Oct. 4, to see the role the documentary genre has played in forming our national self-image.

The National Film Board of Canada was created in 1939 by the William Lyon Mackenzie King government with the express purpose of garnering national support for Canada entering the Second World War. Released in 2014, Shameless Propaganda is filmmaker Robert Lower’s take on the boldest and most compelling propaganda effort in NFB history, in which its founding commissioner, John Grierson, saw the documentary as a “hammer to shape society”. At the film’s centre is Englishman Grierson, summoned to Canada by Mackenzie King and charged with the task of convincing Canadians they lived in a country worth fighting for.

Lower watched 500 films produced by the NFB until 1945 in preparing to write, direct, narrate and edit the film — a passion project that was carefully constructed over several years. All 500 films are distilled here for the essence of their message to Canadians.

All 500 of the films produced by the National Film Board up to 1945 are covered in Shameless Propaganda.

Using only these films and still photos from that era, Lower recreates the picture of Canada the government mouthpiece NFB gave us and looks in it for the Canada we know today.

What he finds is by turns enlightening, entertaining, and unexpectedly disturbing.

Robert Lower has been editing, writing and occasionally directing film for more than 40 years, largely in his native Winnipeg, Man. Active with the NFB in the late ’70s and ’80s, he veered into drama for a decade before return-

ing to documentaries in the late ’90s.

He has been going back and forth between the genres ever since. Recent documentary writing and editing credits include The Devil’s Brigade, Ballet Girls, Ballet High, 40 Years of One Night Stands, The Nature of Things — Mysteries of the Deep and The Nature of Things — Surviving The Teenage Brain.

Here, wildlife — including one of the last herds of mountain caribou in the world — finds refuge. Rare plants survive. Pristine water from alpine lakes feeds into seventeen separate watersheds. Forests, whose diversity rivals any in British Columbia, thrive.

Beloved by the local community for its backcountry recreation opportunities, natural resources and scenic beauty, Darkwoods can now also be celebrated as a conservation legacy of global, national and local importance.

Why Darkwoods matters

There is not just one feature that makes Darkwoods such an important natural treasure. The property contains a multitude of special characteristics. Some of these are tangible, like the plants and animals that live here.

Others are less easy to see, but just as vital to the longterm protection of nature and culture in the region. For example, Darkwoods is an important source of clean water that pours into Kootenay Lake and other water bodies. It is also a highly valued part of the wilderness backyard to the surrounding communities, who use it for recreation and resources.

Project history

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) purchased Darkwoods in

2008 from Pluto Darkwoods Forestry Corporation. This acquisition remains the single largest private land purchase for conservation in Canadian history. Since securing Darkwoods we have completed and extensive ecological baseline inventory of the property, which then informed our Property Management Plan.

Darkwoods continues to be one of our most active projects, with ongoing conservation research, and a long list of stewardship activities throughout the summer.

Darkwoods has a long history of use by local communities. Since the 1960s, the public has been allowed limited access to the property with a permit, and we are happy to continue that tradition and even expand those opportunities.

At the same time, the land cannot support all uses, at all times, in all places and retain its special character. Some reasonable limits are required.

Darkwoods Forest Carbon pilot project

The Darkwoods Forest Carbon pilot project harnesses the power of the carbon market to further large-scale conservation in British Columbia. The forests on Darkwoods store an enormous amount of carbon and we have been able to create a high quality carbon project that raises important funds for our conservation work.

Darkwoods has brought together a wide variety of both private and public sector partners across Canada and the U.S., as well as local communities and First Nations. We got the call at about 7:30 in the morning, on June 16. It was my brother saying, “Mom had a stroke. She’s at the hospital. It doesn’t look good.” And

Nelsonites aim to disrupt climate change

While Leonardo Dicaprio and Sting joined the New York contingent of Sunday’s record-breaking global march on climate change, approximately 300 Nelsonites paraded through downtown with aims of disrupting global warming and the infrastructure that causes it.

The worldwide day of action was designed to raise awareness in the days leading up to global leaders convening at the UN General Assembly in New York, where Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will be hosting a summit on climate change.

Members of the Nelson faction of the global movement were thrilled by its success on Sunday.

“I was a university grad right at the time of the first Earth Day in 1970. It struck me then that

it was so logical not to pollute the environment that was our living room,” said Michael Jessen, a member of the Nelson chapter of the Citizen’s Climate Lobby. “Now I have a 24-year-old daughter and I’m concerned about her ability to live in safe and healthy world.”

Jessen and a number of other activists gave speeches, and musical accompaniment was provided, before the marchers swept into traffic and marched through downtown. While some motorists met the parade with honks of support, others were clearly upset by the hoopla.

“We took over the streets and disrupted business as usual,” said Montana Burgess, and organizer with Kootenays for a Pipeline Free BC. “The cars had to stop for us. People were watching. And that’s the only way we’re going to have meaningful change, is if people stop and think “People need to understand that climate change is one, a food security issue, two, an environmental issue, three, a wildlife issue and four, an intergenerational issue.

“The reason I care is I was raised in a trailer park for the beginning of my life. I lived really close to the poverty line, and I understood firsthand what unfair felt like. I went to demonstrations, Earth Day and stuff like that, and it’s just been a part of my upbringing. It wasn’t until I was a little older and went off to university that I started student organizing around environmental stuff.”

Burgess said she’s been passionate about the environment from a young age, which led to her seeking her current job as operations manager of an organization called Climate Action Network. She said she’s been following the news carefully in the days leading up to the assembly, and was horrified to learn Stephen Harper wouldn’t be in attendance.

120 heads of state from all over the world will be there, but he won’t be. It shows that he doesn’t care about climate change. He doesn’t think it’s a real issue. And if you look at the Conservatives’ record, it shows that they don’t think climate change is a real threat.”

But according to the organizers of the event, climate change is a looming and urgent threat that needs to be addressed.

“Fossil fuel generated climate change is the biggest threat facing humanity,” said Keith Wiley of Kootenays for a Pipeline-Free BC. “Only a massive public movement will push governments to cut back on oil, gas and coal and move to a life-sustaining clean energy future.

This global action helps us get going.”

Sunday’s events were held in over 166 countries, with 310,000 people on the streets of New York, 30,000 participating in Melbourne, Australia and more than 10,000 in Berlin.

Once the parade reached Nelson United Church, organizers welcomed approximately 100 people to the Nelson United Church, where they screened a film called Disruption.

“People were pretty emotional by the end.

They got excited, which is great. I was sobbing in the back, because the movie is so powerful. I didn’t expect it to affect me that way. I was already on board,” said Burgess.

“We are not living sustainably,” said Jessen. “On August 19 this year we had used up all the resources that this planet could replenish in a year. So from August 2014 until the end of the year, we’re living on earth’s credit. That’s not a sustainable scenario.

We need to change the way we run our economy, we need to change the way we run our social systems and we need to do it quickly.

Black Press and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy are joining this fall for their fourth annual Reach a Reader campaign.

COLUMBIA BASIN ALLIANCE FOR LITERACY

Thousands of British Columbians do not possess the literacy skills needed to succeed, impacting everything from healthcare to employment.

In British Columbia, 40 per cent of adults have difficulty reading a newspaper, filling out a work application form, reading a bus schedule or understanding a lease, and close to 50 per cent of adults do not have the skills necessary to calculate a tip, create a budget or understand credit card interest rates.

Even more concerning is the fact that almost four in 10 youths aged 15 have insufficient reading skills and 16 per cent of B.C. youths are not graduating from high school. These statistics have serious implications on society, as literacy rates impact every aspect of our lives: healthcare, education, crime rates, employment and economic status.

This month, Black Press and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) are joining forces to raise funds and awareness about the importance of literacy with the fourth annual Reach a Reader campaign. The campaign will culminate with community leaders and volunteers hitting the streets across the Columbia Basin and Boundary to distribute special editions of local papers and collect donations in support of community-based literacy programs.

The Reach a Reader campaign coincides with Decoda Literacy Solutions’ inaugural Literacy is Life Campaign, a provincewide fundraising and awareness campaign designed to create a new, modern understanding of literacy and raise funds to ensure that community-based literacy programs across British Columbia can support the people who depend on them.

“We have been gratified to see the high level of support and enthusiasm for CBAL’s annual partnership with Black Press on the Reach a Reader campaign,” says CBAL executive director Ali Wassing. “This fall, in tandem with the launch of Decoda’s Literacy is Life provincial campaign and the hugely successful Raise-aReader campaign in the Lower Mainland, we look forward to a banner year for literacy.”

Born in Piapot, Saskatchewan on December 12, 1923, Bill moved to Creston when he was 7 years old. His father passed away shortly thereafter and Bill was fortunate to Ànd a steadfast friend and mentor in Mr. Bill Foot. He moved with his family to Salmo when he was 14 and lived there until he entered the Canadian Armed Forces where he served in both the U.K. and Continental Europe. Upon his return he went to Vancouver and trained to be a mechanic which eventually led to a long career with the Department of Highways.

In 1948 Bill married Alice Lovestrom and they began a life that would be lived truly together. Partners in everything from square dancing to round dancing, Àshing to gardening, hunting to parenting, they built and provided a home and a childhood for their children that would be the envy of most.

Summers were spent camping with family at Sanca, Sandpoint and at the end of pretty much every backwoods logging road in the Kootenays. Many bandaids were applied, tears soothed, Àghts refereed and Àsh caught. ´Hang on, kids” could be heard from the cab of the truck as it bounded over washedout gravel roads, Neil and Jan in the back bouncing around on lawn chairs, half-giddy with glee tinged with a bit of terror.

An avid hunter, Bill passed those skills down to his sons. He loved providing for his family with his own two hands. From meals built from the bounty he produced and that he and Alice butchered, packaged, canned and froze, to the tree swing built especially for Brian, Bill worked hard to give his family everything they needed. A huge garden full of vegetables and fruit trees was his after-work job, but it was some of the work he found most gratifying.

He thought it really something to grow his own food and was hugely successful at it.

Bill loved music and spent many happy years traveling to Àddle contests with Alice and their son Neil. Music is in the MacDonald blood and he loved listening to his kids, his cousins and his close friend Cal Beebe play and sing. If there was music, Bill was happy. After any particularly good shindig, Bill would be likely to smile and say ´Well, that was just marvelous.”

Life-lessons were taught by Àne example and gentle discipline with Bill always being a touchstone to keep us grounded.

Having his only grandchild, Carrie, move here with her husband and his great-grandson and namesake, Russell, brought Bill much joy. He loved every moment he was able to spend with them and marveled at the miracle that is a constantly growing and changing toddler.

On Monday, September 15, Bill had a good day. 90 years old and 10 days shy of his and Alice's 66th wedding anniversary, he went for his walk around the block, had his favorite meal for lunch and sat in the yard with Alice, enjoying the sunshine. Such a beautiful, warm, sunny day. He then sat down in his comfy chair in the home he built for his family and went to sleep, his normal afternoon nap. He didn't wake up.

Godspeed, Dad. You were the best man we have ever known and we will miss you forever.

As per Bill's wishes, there will be no service.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Eloise, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Eloise passed away peacefully at Swan Valley Lodge on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the age of 78 years.

Eloise leaves behind son Robin (Cheryl); daughters Lynn (Blaine) and Janna (Lester); sister Verna Ort; brother *arry Leavitt; Àve grandchildren, Joshua (Melanie), Jeremy (Dallas), Breanne (Matthew), Carly (Jason), Daniel and eight great-grandchildren.

Eloise was predeceased by Glen, her dearly loved husband of 58 years; her parents Leo and Louise Leavitt; brothers Blair, Andy, Ross, Mervyn and Archie Leavitt, and sister Wave Schmidt.

Eloise and Glen enjoyed many camping trips with their children and grandchildren at Kootenay Lake. They also embraced the opportunity to travel to Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Cuba. Eloise loved to water ski, bowl and cross country ski. She worked at the bowling alley for several years, teaching the YBC bowlers and anyone else who wanted to learn. On hot summer days, you could Ànd her working tirelessly in the garden.

She always had one speed and that was fast! It was hard to keep up with her energy and passion for life. In her earlier years, she was a passionate crocheter.

We would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Swan Valley Lodge that provided the utmost care for our mom.

Thank you to all our friends and family for their support in this most difÀcult time.

At her request, there will be no service.

Sarah passed away in a tragic car accident near Fox Creek, AB on September 10, 2014.

Sarah was born in Penticton, BC. She received her education and graduated in Creston BC. Sarah was a beautiful young woman. Feisty and full of life, she was going places. Sarah was gaining her independence working for a crushing company as a rock truck driver. Oh, so very proud. Sarah loved her family and friends unconditionally. Sarah will always be remembered, loved and dearly missed.

She is survived by her father Dennis Borzak; stepmom Cindy; brother Nathan; sisters Hayle, Payton and Levi; grandparents Andrew and Carol Borzak; uncle and aunt Ray and Denise Stewart; cousins Nicole (Aniz), and Derek; mother Shannon Lundy; sisters Jessica, Emily and Micaela; grandparents John and Coleen Lundy; aunt Stephanie, and loved by boyfriend Jaymie Penner.
