When Wood’s Flats, now the Village of Montrose, was built out as a retirement spot for Cominco workers back in the 1950s, the latest technology was used to run clean water to the new houses.

With the water main now over 60 years old, the cost to replace the outdated pipes is about $9 million – a price that requires some very careful planning by village council.

Asbestos cement (AC) pipe, also known as transite, was a popular choice of engineers for potable water, Hwy 22A 250.368.6466 sanitary sewer and storm drain pipelines from the 1940s to the 1960s.

The lightweight, corrosive resistant pipeline has a 50-year life span, which means the village has to come up with a plan to replace its aging infrastructure before the water service fails.

“It’s the type of pipe that was used back in the day when the majority of Montrose was built,” explained Kevin Chartres, the village’s chief administrative officer (CAO).

“The estimated life of these pipes as per our asset policy is 50 years,” at the award winning he said. “So every metre of AC pipe in Columbia River Hotel the village has passed its useful life Trail already.”

Chartres clarified that the newer areas of Montrose are on a different system, but the older parts of town, such as 9th Avenue continue to be serviced water through an AC system.

Bull-a-Rama ride not over yet

Trail council will take the bull by the horns next month and decide the future of a major Silver City event.

For the last 13 years, the city has taken the lead role to produce the Kootenay Chrysler Bulla-Rama, but declining tickets sales and increasing costs to run the one-day show has bucked the

event far into the red.

Fewer tickets sold hitched to a 32 per cent decline in liquor sales during the April 26 bull riding competition had city council reviewing the event’s sustainability during the summer months.

Trisha Davison, the city’s parks and recreation director, presented restructuring options to council during the Sept. 8 governance meeting, and suggested that Trail

continue to support the Bull-aRama as a facilitator, and not as its direct producer.

Meaning, the city could pass the reins to a new event promoter, including content, volunteers, raising of funds and admission prices – and take part by providing indirect services such as clean up, crowd control, and planning advice.

Yolanda Yang is offering an eight-week Chinese brush painting at the VISAC Gallery starting Sept. 25. Yang is an accomplished Shanghai art teacher, and plans to share her skill of traditional Asian painting techniques and its relevance in Chinese culture. she explained. “So when I drove here for the first time, I told my husband that I feel like I am back home.”

Yang began studying traditional Chinese painting at the age of nine, and since that time, has received and art degree from Shanghai University and taught children at the metropolis’ famous international school called Soong Ching Ling Multicultural Division.

While she was instructing foreign children in the school’s art program, Yang said her English needed some improvement, so she enrolled in a class to improve her knowledge of the language.

It was there she met her English teacher, Alain Millette, a B.C. native who later became her husband.

“I learned English and one year later we started dating,” she said with a giggle. “I was happy with him so we got married.”

But after seven years of living abroad, her husband was ready to return to Canada and resume his former career in the trades.

Last year, the couple landed in Victoria during Christmas, but Alain, an electrician, couldn’t find work on the coast.

Three months ago, a job opportunity opened at the Waneta Dam, and the pair hopped in their car and relocated to Trail.

Since that time, Yang has been continuing English classes through Columbia Basin Alliance for Learning (CBAL).

Through CBAL instructor Carolyn Amantea, Yang was introduced to VISAC’s artistic director, then given the chance to share her knowledge of Chinese painting and culture with people in Greater Trail.

“First, I don’t say I teach,” she explained.

“I say I share my skill because Chinese painting is free style, easier and more relaxed.

“I’ll show how other Chinese artists (paint), and you can chose the way you like.”

Each of the eight lessons will focus on different subject matter and Yang said she will talk about its cultural relevance during the class.

Yang explained that traditionally, Chinese painting uses rice paper as a medium, but she’ll talk about that significance in Asian culture and how the paper has evolved into something more modern than its historical handmade layers of cotton and fibres.

“There is also thousands of brushes but choosing one is like wine tasting,” she said.

“And I’ll talk cultural, like if we paint a goldfish. It won’t be about (replicating) a goldfish, but what a goldfish means in China. And there are many stories.”

Yang’s class is one of many fall courses and workshops slated to begin at the gallery next week.

After being allotted a $7,000 grant through the Columbia Basin Trust’s Community Initiatives and Affected Area program, VISAC upgrades include a refreshed colour palette in the studio, a new pottery wheel and additional potters’ tools.

About 6,100 metres of pipe have been acoustically analyzed – which is the preferred method because it doesn’t require physical removal of any pipe from the ground.

A Canadian company called Echologics used its non-invasive technology to measure the speed of acoustic signals in the village’s system and data collected is then used to calculate the remaining pipe wall thickness.

“But we need to work out a plan of how to replace it before it fails. That said, it’s not a $9 million replacement that we will be doing in five, 10 or even 20 years, it will be prioritized as per the capital plan.”

According to Health Canada (HC) website, there is no consistent, convincing evidence that ingested asbestos is hazardous.

Municipalities picking up tab after federal and provincial downloads Report highlights costs passed down to cash-strapped communities THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA - British Columbia’s municipalities are paying more than their fair share of policing, housing, waste and water-treatment costs as the federal and provincial governments funnel the financial burden downward, says a report released Thursday.

The report, from the Vancouverbased Columbia Institute, is titled Who’s Picking Up the Tab - Federal and Provincial Downloads onto Local Governments and concludes local governments have shouldered about $4 billion in reduced federal and provincial transfer payments.

The release of the report comes just days before B.C.’s municipal politicians gather in Whistler for the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention.

Premier Christy Clark is scheduled to address delegates Sept. 26.

“In spite of limited means, local governments are picking up more and more services and more and more of the tab,” the 44-page report concludes. “Local governments are finding themselves picking up the slack on housing, mental health, addiction, social services, wastewater treatment, diking, flood management, drinking water and recreation infrastructure.”

The Columbia Institute Centre for Civic Governance characterizes itself as a charitable organization established to activate and motivate working people to build strong, progressive communities throughout Canada.

Its report states municipal governments rely on two methods to raise money: property taxes and user fees, and they aren’t permitted to run deficits. But from 2001 to 2010 sewer-service costs grew 173 per cent, police costs increased 134 per cent, waste-water services costs went up 130 per cent and park, recreation and culture services costs grew 108 per cent.

“Essentially, we have a situation where senior orders of government ... have both been reducing their commitment to programs and cutting direct grants and the end result is that municipalities are picking up the tab,” she said.

THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA - Ferry service between Gabriola Island and Vancouver Island is so unreliable and expensive that it needs to be replaced by two bridges, says the man behind a petition that spurred a government feasibility study on the idea.

But the ministry said in a news release that an independent consultant conducting the study will not assess the level of public support for a bridge.

The study, expected to start this fall and finish next spring, will include an examination of potential locations for a fixed link, a cost estimate and a comparison of the cost between a bridge and existing ferry service.

About 4,000 people live on Gabriola Island, which draws a larger population during summer months.

BC Ferries’ service to the island east of Nanaimo was reduced as a cost-cutting measure last year when service on other routes was also chopped.

Anything that suggests that there is less than good service does a misrepresentation of the governance that’s happening under local leadership.”

The Union of BC Municipalities issued a report last year, Strong Fiscal Futures, that called for a review of the local government finance system, concluding it relied too heavily on property taxes.

Fatigue possible cause of bus crash

THE CANADIAN PRESS KAMLOOPS, B.C. - British Columbia’s transportation minister says a highway crash that injured dozens of tour bus passengers last month was most likely caused by driver error.

The bus flipped into a ditch on the Coquihalla Highway south of Merritt, B.C., ejecting multiple passengers and leaving all 56 people aboard with varying injuries.

RCMP have already ruled out speed as a cause of the accident, and provincial Transportation Minister Todd Stone says that mechanical failure has also been eliminated as a factor following an inspection of the bus.

A final police report still has to be filed, but Stone told Kamloops radio station CHNL that driver fatigue potentially led to the crash and his ministry will review the length of time that drivers can operate a vehicle before there is a mandated rest.

The bus was operated by Western Bus Lines, and someone who answered the phone at the company’s Kelowna office said no one is available to speak to Stone’s comments.

The bus crashed on Aug. 28 while returning to Vancouver from a tour of the Rocky Mountains with passengers from mainland China, Hong Kong and the U.S.

Cougar killed in Calgary THE CANADIAN PRESS CALGARY - Wildlife officers shot and killed a cougar Thursday that wandered near a hospital in south Calgary.

Brendan Cox, an Alberta government spokesman, said there were reports of another big cat in the area, but they turned out to be false.

“One cougar has been destroyed by officers,” he said.

Cox said the wildlife officers had hoped to tranquilize and trap the cougar that was laying in tall Briefs grass.

He said after watching the animal they determined the adult male cat was too riled up.

Cox said cougars can become agitated when they get hit with a tranquilizer dart. He said the cat could have run off into a more populated area, putting people at risk.

“Cougars being very quick and agile pose a high risk to escape the area,” he said.

“Our officers had to make a very difficult choice. Ultimately their first priority is public safety.”

Minister joins oil group THE CANADIAN PRESS REGINA - A Saskatchewan cabinet minister is resigning to take the job of president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.

Tim McMillan announced Thursday that he is stepping down immediately as the minister in charge of rural and remote health.

He said he plans to resign as the legislature member for Lloydminster at the end of the month.

His new job with the oil-industry lobby group starts Oct. 1.

McMillan said in a release that he understands he cannot legally lobby the provincial government for one year after leaving cabinet, a provision set in the Saskatchewan Lobbyists Act. First elected in 2007, McMillan has held several other cabinet portfolios, including energy and resources.

Glen Scott, the chair of the board of governors of CAPP, said in a statement that McMillan has had “a strong connection to the energy industry over many years, including ownership of an oilfield services company.

THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Questions are being raised about how boxer Mike Tyson, a multiple convicted felon, was allowed into Canada last week.

The former heavyweight champion visited Toronto to promote his one-man show at the Air Canada Centre. While in Toronto, he got into an on-air dustup with a CP24 anchor who asked about his 1992 rape conviction.

Other celebrities with criminal convictions have been turned away at the border, including Martha Stewart, who was denied entry in 2005 after being convicted of a white-collar crime.

Union puts defeat of Harper’s Tories ahead of blanket support for NDP THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - The NDP’s traditionally strong ties to the labour movement won’t be enough to secure a blanket endorsement from Canada’s largest private sector union in next year’s federal election.

Unifor will urge its 300,000-plus members to vote strategically and will pour its resources behind local candidates - be they NDP or Liberal - that are best positioned to defeat Stephen Harper’s Conservatives.

The union infuriated many New Democrats when it took a similar stance in last spring’s Ontario election in a bid to stop Tim Hudak’s Progressive Conservatives.

In that case, Conservative support collapsed, allowing Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals to cruise to a majority victory.

Unifor national president Jerry Dias says the union has a strong relationship with the federal NDP and will support re-election of all incumbent New Democrat MPs.

But he says the need to defeat the Harper government must trump Unifor’s loyalty to the NDP. “For us, we know that another four years of Harper will be disastrous for working class people in Canada, period. So, that in itself trumps going out there and putting support in a riding where we know that the New Democrats have no chance,” Dias said in an interview.

“If the New Democrats have a legitimate, good shot at winning, absolutely that’s where we’re going, no question about it. But if there’s not a hope in hell, why would I waste resources? It doesn’t make a stitch of sense.”

For example, in a riding like Manitoba’s BrandonSouris, where the Liberals came within a whisker of defeating the Conservatives in a byelection late last year, Dias said Unifor would throw its support and resources behind the Liberal candidate next year.

“The New Democrat got wiped right out (in the byelection). So for us to even consider supporting the New Democrats in BrandonSouris, in my opinion, may very well just hand the seat back to the Conservatives.”

The decision to pursue strategic voting in the next federal election was taken unanimously at a weekend meeting of Unifor’s national council. Ironically, the gathering featured a keynote speech by NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, who announced his plan to reinstate a minimum wage for workers in federally regulated sectors, rising to $15 per hour over four years.

Dias acknowledged the labour movement has no stronger political ally than the NDP. But while Justin Trudeau’s Liberals are less supportive of unions than the NDP, he doubted they’re intent on destroying the movement, as he believes Harper’s Conservatives are determined to do.

“So, if my choice is Stephen Harper or Justin Trudeau, then that’s a nobrainer.”

Dias said anti-union measures are “red meat” that Harper throws out to pacify “right-wing extremists” in the Conservative party.

He pointed to government and Conservative private members’ bills which labour advocates complain would impose unfair financial transparency rules on unions, gut public service collective bargaining and make it harder for federally regulated workers to join a union while making it easier to decertify a union.

Unifor’s decision not to unequivocally back the New Democrats in the Ontario election prompted more than 600 federal NDP parliamentary staffers, who are members of Unifor, to look for another union to represent them.

Dias said the divorce is almost complete.

Cost of MPs’ satellite staff soars despite austerity THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - The cost of paying Conservative political staffers working in a network of satellite minister’s offices ballooned by 70 per cent during the same years the government was asking departments to tighten their belts.

Between 200910 and 2013-14, the budget for staffing at the regional offices rose from $1.6 million to $2.7 million, according to figures tabled in the House of Commons this week.

The number of satellite locations with staff has risen from 11 to 16 to include smaller centres such as Kitchener, Ont., Charlottetown and Iqaluit.

Several cabinet ministers, including Employment Minister Jason Kenney, Industry Minister James Moore and Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq, have regional offices in addition to their headquarters in Ottawa and their MPs’ offices.

The offices are top spots for patronage hiring.

For example, Aglukkaq employs excandidate Sandy Lee in her Yellowknife office, and Kenney

has former regional organizer and candidate Mani Fallon working in a Vancouver office.

Fisheries Minister Gail Shea employs a campaign worker and former Conservative nomination candidate in Charlottetown.

Finance Minister Joe Oliver recently stationed two senior political staff in

a regional office in Toronto - former chief of staff Dan Miles and communications director Patricia Best.

Memorial honoured Smoke Eaters’ spirit

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, The game is over. The final buzzer has sounded. Seth Martin has left the ice.”

Like many others at the Seth Martin memorial, that was the first time my eyes moistened up and it wasn’t to be the last as Reverend and Celebrant Ken Siemens presided at the memorial for the great goaltender that played for the illustrious Trail Smoke Eaters. The “Smokies” were twice World Amateur Hockey Champions – the only city in Canada to accomplish that feat – and Canada’s most celebrated hockey team outside of the NHL and maybe even more deserving of celebration than many NHL teams today.

It was only fitting that the memorial was held in the Cominco Gym in the Trail Memorial Centre, the storied hockey shrine that was home to so many Martin and Smoke Eater triumphs over the years including Savage Cups, Allen Cups, and World Championships.

Close to 300 friends, fans and

family packed into the old gym walking through an Honour Guard of the Cominco Fire Dept., where Martin was a fireman himself when he wasn’t turning back rubber on the ice. And as I looked down from the wooden bleachers, I could see many of Martin’s hockey contemporaries in the assembled crowd.

Norm Lenardon, the shifty winger who tucked the puck behind the Russian goalie to give Trail its second World Championship in Geneva in 1961. Cal Hockley, the big Smokie Captain and pillar of the team. Pinoke McIntyre, a bit frail now, but in his heyday a mercurial piece of dynamite on the ice as the Russians soon discovered. Harry “Hurricane” Smith, the bruising defenceman who along with Don Fletcher kept Smokie opponents honest and fearful with their booming checks.

Dave Rusnell, the crafty centreman and stickhandler extraordinaire, who mesmerized many a Smokie opponent. There were other Smokies in the

crowd.

Apologies for not mentioning them all.

But despite the blinding amount of old hockey talent in the crowd, Rev. Siemens made it clear that Martin was much more than a mere hockey player. First and foremost, he was a family man married to wife Bev for almost 61 years, father of three outstanding daughters and a score of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

But most of all a modest man despite his many accomplishments, on and off the ice, including making his own goalie mask in a Cominco shop and wearing it on the ice before the immortal Jacques

Plante did the same for the Montreal Canadians.

But Martin will always be remembered most for his exploits on the ice, including being a starting goaltender for the St Louis Blues in the NHL late in his career and shaking hands with the Pope in Rome when the Smokies toured Europe.

And when his daughter Lynne, resplendent in her orange and black Smokie scarf, took the microphone we were soon reminded why her dad was such a great player.

“He was always reading the play and ‘saw the ice.’ He knew whether a player was going to shoot the puck or pass the puck.

That’s why he stymied so many players.”

Martin was a stand up goalie with a great glove hand like the immortal “Iron Man” Glen Hall that he played with in St. Louis. When he was upward on his skates it was almost impossible to beat him, but when he went down a few pucks got by him, but not many.

Now it’s that Great Arena in the sky for one

of Trail’s finest though Martin did grow up in Rossland, up the hill, like several other Smokie players. More than half of the Smokie team that won in Europe was born in Trail and first learned their hockey in the Trail Minor Hockey Association and indeed it was Trail that started Minor Hockey Week in Canada.

Not bad for a gritty, little smelter town of 10,000 that all the pundits of the day predicted would lose in Europe and shame Canada. Trail is a town of winners and that never was more obvious than at Martin’s memorial Sept. 13.

Good bye Seth. I don’t know how many times I sat up in those wooden bleachers in the corner of Cominco Arena with the “cross the river” boys and watched you work your magic. If they ever need a goalie in heaven you’re a cinch for the job.

But Washington has not asked these major players to join its new coalition. Indeed, it has invited everybody in the Middle East to join except those who are actually willing to fight ISIS on the ground.

How peculiar.

Maybe a rebuilt Iraqi army can drive ISIS out of Iraq eventually, although ISIS has lots of local support in the Sunni Arab parts of Iraq. But where does Obama think the troops will come from to drive ISIS back in its Syrian heartland?

His only answer is to build a new “Free Syrian Army” composed of “moderates” who will fight on two fronts, defeating ISIS while also overthrowing Assad.

But that’s ridiculous, since the old FSA has almost all been absorbed into the various jihadi groups in Syria. There is nothing left to build on.

For added comic effect, this new Free Syrian Army will be trained in Saudi Arabia, the principal supporter and paymaster of those same jihadi groups until ISIS scared it into hedging its bets.

One is tempted to think that Obama is not really all that worried about ISIS as a strategic threat. One is further tempted to speculate that he has learned not to care too much about what happens in the Middle East any more. But those are subjects for another day.

Canadians positive about life: report THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - A new report on the mental health status of Canadians has found that 77 per cent of people aged 15 or older are considered to be psychologically flourishing - feeling good about life and functioning well.

The Statistics Canada report found less than two per cent of Canadians are classified as languishing, meaning they experience low positive emotions and poor functioning, while almost 22 per cent of Canadians are classified as having moderate mental health.

The report is based on results from the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey.

When combined with information on mental illness, almost three-quarters of Canadians are estimated to have complete mental health and

don’t meet criteria for six major mental disorders: depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and alcohol, cannabis or other drug abuse or dependence.

Men and women were equally likely to have complete mental health, with factors contributing to well-being including age, marital status, income, education, employment status, spirituality and physical health.

The report found age is a strong factor in psychological well-being, with 80 per cent of those aged 65 and older having complete mental health, compared to 65 per cent among those aged 15 to 24.

Having a spouse or partner is also associated with having complete mental health, as is higher education and income.

OBITUARIES BLOY, JENNA RENE – It is with great sadness that we must announce the tragic and sudden passing of our precious Nennanoo in a car accident on the Alaska Highway, after only twentytwo short years with us. Jenna was born in Trail and attended J.L. Crowe before graduating from Salmo Secondary.

She had a way with horses and was an accomplished rider and trainer.

Predeceased by her great grandparents Jack and Ina Gurney and uncle Anthony Bloy, who were surely the first in a long line of open arms waiting to welcome her.

Our most heartfelt condolences go out to the two other families that share our grief.

Survived by her mother Kelly Bloy (Paul), father Daniel Bloy (Tanja) and big sister Laura Bloy (Darren). Her grandparents Cheryl and Danny Bloy and Roger and Patricia Cyr. Her aunts and uncles Glen Gurney (Judy), Brian and LeeAnn Bloy and Sharleen and David McBlaine. Her close friends Gail and Gilbert Benson, Tammy and Mark Benson and the McKellar family. Her cousins Bernice (a.k.a. Dodie) Taylor, Chalise and Jaydan McBlaine, Katie Bloy her other big sister and Kayla, James and Hailey Benson. The list goes on with her nieces and nephew Ella, Rylen, Teyla, Mikayla and all the other rugrats whom she loved so dearly, may you never forget just how much.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on September 29, 2014 at the Fruitvale United Church.

Interment to follow at 1:00pm at Mountain View Cemetery in Rossland, BC. Jenna is deeply loved and unimaginably missed by all who knew her. To trade the pain losing you has caused would mean having never known you at all, so long may your beautiful smile warm our hearts!

John passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2014 with family by his side.

John had a great passion for the outdoors and spent many days fishing Lake Erie and the shores of the Columbia River. There wasn’t a safe hiding spot for a bass, yellow pickerel or perch when he was on the water.

He also enjoyed carpentry and was continually filling up the family homes with his creations.

John was predeceased by his wife Kay, son Lawrence and granddaughter Anjelica. He is survived by his three daughters – Cheryl Orrell (John), Wendy Major (Gary) and Amy Gurnett (Chris); granddaughter Ivy, grandson Carter, granddaughter Cassandra, granddaughter Abra and grandson Colin.

The family would like extend a special thank you to Gail and Jim Ihas for all of their help in the care of our father over the past few years.

Internment will take place at the Morgan’s Point Cemetery in Wainfleet, Ontario at a later date. John and his wife Kay will be laid to rest at this time.

PEOPLE Prince presents Duke of Edinburgh gold awards THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA - His Royal Highness Prince Edward Earl of Wessex told a ballroom full of young people last Saturday they earned the right to walk a little taller after successfully completing a journey that millions attempt but relatively few complete.

He shook hands with 87 young high achievers as he handed out the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award during a ceremony at Government House.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award dates back to 1956 when it was established by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Its aim is to help young people develop a sense of responsibility to themselves and their communities through self-reliance, perseverance and responsibility.

The concept of the award is individual challenge and runs in more than 140 countries and has attracted eight million participants. The award started in Canada in 1964 and is open to people between the ages of 14 and 24.

“You have stretched yourselves in ways that have perhaps surprised yourselves and others, and you’ve stepped outside that comfort zone, and as a result you’ve come through feeling much more confident about your own abilities and what you can do, which will serve you in good stead in the future,” the Earl of Wessex said.

“I wish you the very best of luck in all of that, and, once again, congratulations.”

The 18-month program saw some of the youth award winners challenge themselves in ways they never would have considered, including humanitarian work in Senegal, volunteering at a haunted house and achieving black belts in martial arts.

Award winner Sukhdeep Brar of Abbotsford, B.C., said she confronted her lifelong fears of speaking in public and during the program turned herself into an accomplished speaker and a student politician.

“Our world needs youth leaders to take on global challenges,” she said.

Brar said the program also challenged her physically, leading her to endure 16-hour hikes across glaciers and complete the Great Wall of China marathon, which consists primarily of running up stairs for more than 40 kilometres.

The Earl of Wessex said the award winners are members of a select company of people who have successfully completed the program and they should consider themselves special.

“When you walk out of the room a bit later today just walk a few inches taller,” he said. “Just feel a little bit proud of what you’ve actually managed to achieve. Well done.”

The Earl of Wessex thanked Songhees First Nation Chief Robert Sam for welcoming him to his traditional aboriginal territory in Victoria by welcoming him to his mother’s house.

The first weekend of September, Kootenay Savings annual Family Movie in the Park series saw over 2300 people - from newborns to great grandparents - come out to enjoy an outdoor movie under the stars and experience seeing The Lego Movie on a massive 30-foot tall inflatable screen.

Held Sept. 5 in Kimberley and Trail and Sept. 6 in Nakusp and Radium Hot Springs, the events were free for the public to attend. Rather than pay an admission fee, everyone was instead encouraged to bring along a donation for their local food bank. In Trail, over 1,200 people attended the event donating 500 lbs of food and $130 in cash. Back to Church Sunday When I was at home this summer in Sydney, Nova Scotia I found out that three churches were closing. These had been churches that were full every Sunday when I was growing up. It made me so sad as we drove by them. One already has a For Sale sign in front of it.

This coming Sunday is Back to Church Sunday. How we long for all those who once attended church to come back. Going to church does not make you better than anyone else. It does not mean God loves you more. But it is a way to connect with God, to hear from His word - The Bible. It is time spent with the family of God; people will care about you and pray for you.

The Canadian Press attempted to poll all the provincial transportation ministries about the emerging issue but received few clear answers.

Quebec indicated it is currently reviewing its distracted driving law, some provinces responded with vague statements that did not directly answer questions, and most did not reply at all.

A spokesman for Ontario’s transportation minister, Steven Del Duca, said in an email that police will have to assess how to interpret the law currently on the books.

“The new Apple Watch is a multi-purpose device. Some features available on the device may be permit-

ted under the province’s distracted driving provisions, while others would not be.

In situations where the distracted driving law does not apply, anyone who chooses to put others at risk by driving while distracted can still be charged with careless driving,” wrote Patrick Searle.

“Police interpret and enforce the Highway Traffic Act. It’s up to police to determine if a driver’s use of any electronic device while driving or stopped warrants any charge(s) being laid.”

The Canadian A u t o m o b i l e Association supports distracting driving legislation but hasn’t yet taken a position on how smartwatches should be treated under the law, says spokesman Ian Jack.

“Generally speaking we think that when people are driving they should drive, and focus on that very important thing that they’re doing - not be engaged in their electronic devices, whether they’re on their wrist or in their cup holder,” Jack says.

“There’s academic research that suggests hands-free isn’t necessarily better than any other form of communication while you’re on the road....

Voice activation is engaging a fair bit of your brain. And the more of your brain that’s engaged on things other than paying attention to the road, the worse it is for you, safety wise.”

Pool renovations could cost swim team another season

A Nelson swim club could lose a second competitive season due to renovations at the aquatic centre.

The local recreation commission wants to begin work on the pool in April, despite a request from the Neptunes to wait until July, when they can begin swimming outdoors.

“Unfortunately it means us missing our competitive season next summer,” said club president Paul Cowan. “We lost our season two years ago and it just about killed the club. We brought it back this year only to be devastated again.”

The project, for which the Regional District of Central Kootenay will borrow up to $4.5 million over five years, is intended to fix numerous structural and mechanical deficiencies in the nearly 40-year old building. They were identified

even before a section of ceiling tiles collapsed last year, resulting in a sixmonth closure of the facility, which wiped out the Neptunes’ season.

“We really value all the user groups, but if you’re talking about delaying a building project of that size, you may put yourself in a predicament,” rec commission chair Ramona Faust said.

The Neptunes’ Cowan said the decision is “disheartening.”

He said they are exploring other options, including swimming at the outdoor pool in Salmo, which is partly funded by the regional district, or using the Castlegar aquatic centre, which is already home to the Aquanauts swim team.

The Neptunes’ membership stood at 70 to 80, ages five to 18, before the previous aquatic centre closure but was down to about 50 this season.

Trap trasher pleads guilty Cranbrook Townsman One of two people involved with the destruction of deer traps in Kimberley in February plead guilty last week in Cranbrook provincial court last week.

Lucky Sikora, who was charged with mischief to property over $5,000 after the incident.

He was fined $800 and must pay a victim surcharge of $240 and restitution of $1,000 after pleading guilty, as ordered by Justice Ron Webb.

The fines must be paid within one year.

Another charge of disguising face with intent to commit an offence was stayed.

Devin Kazakoff, who was also charged with the same offences in connection to the destruction of the same deer traps, will appear in court on Oct. 21.

The city of Kimberley had to cancel a planned deer cull after the traps were destroyed, as the plan relied on their use to capture urban deer.

Smokies open season at Showcase

The BCHL is kicking off its season with the Bauer-BCHL Showdown at Prospera Place in Chilliwack this weekend.

The Trail Smoke Eaters have a day off today but will hit the ice on Saturday against the Coquitlam Express and Sunday versus the Powell River Kings.

“I think we have a good group here,” said Smokies coach Nick Deschenes. “The talent level is high and will continue to climb, and the work ethic is there, and for the most part comraderie and sense of team is fairly strong . . . it’s going to be a day-by-day approach, but it’s going to be a good test and we’ll see where we sit.”

The Smokies are coming off a great test last weekend splitting a pair of games with the Selkirk College Saints of the BC Inter-collegiate Hockey League, that included an exciting 5-4 double-overtime win at home on Saturday. The team will likely have a tougher time of it this weekend against Coquitlam, who finished third in the Mainland division, and particularly the Island division Kings, who were vying for top spot in the league for much of last season. “It’s good, after seargent Bacon there, I feel like our team is really tight already and we haven’t even started the season,” said Davidson.

As for the long-term goals, the Smokies are aiming at a playoff spot, and maybe even a trip to Portage la Prairie, Man. “That’s our ultimate goal, the RBC is in our eyes,” added Davidson. “it should be a good season.”

Athletes rake in the medals

BY TIMES STAFF Greater Trail athletes at the BC Senior Games, now known as the 55-plus BC Games, returned home from Langley this week with a bounty of medals in tow.

Zone 6, West Kootenay-Boundary athletes claimed 89 medals in all, including 37 gold, 28 silver, and 24 bronze.

The most medals ever won by a Zone 6 team was when the Games were hosted in Trail, Castlegar, and Nelson in 2011. The team won an unprecedented 266 medals, 115 gold, 73 silver, and 78 bronze, and finished third overall.

Greater Trail Results: Trail cyclist Rino De Biasio claimed yet another gold in Mens 80-84 time trial, and silver in road race, while the Kootenay Glacier Kings 60-plus hockey team captured gold beating the Surrey Schooners 4-2 in the final.

Local players included Martin Sander of Montrose, Ron Kassian of Rossland, Wayne Florko of Trail, Fruitvale’s Dave Elliott, and Garry Bock of Trail.

In swimming, Rossland’s Barb Roberts won six medals as she swam to gold in the 25, 50, and 100-metre breaststroke and bronze medals in the 25, 50, and 100 backstroke.

Horseshoe aficionados Jim Harrold took home bronze in the 55-64 B class, while Dorothy Harrold won bronze in women’s 55-plus, and Les Anderson also nabbed bronze in the Men’s 65-plus.

The curling team of Paul Devlin, Murrey Lewis, Bob Fortin and John Rampone also swept to bronze in men 55-64, while the softball Men’s 55-59 team also won bronze.

Laura Anderson and Jan Kissick found a silver lining in women’s pickleball doubles, while Ann Martin and Wendy Wurflinger took bronze, and Shay McAuley and John Wurflinger were the men’s doubles bronze medal winner.

In tennis Ron Cameron of Trail and Monique Pellerin of Castlegar claimed silver in mixed doubles 70-74 age category, while in track and field Jeff Ginalias of Rossland won bronze in the 55-59 triple jump.

The Langley BC Seniors Games ran Sept. 9-13 and included 25 sports, close to 3,900 participants and 1,300 volunteers.

The North Vancouver 2015 55+ BC Games will take place Aug. 25-29, 2015.

he season is upon us on all sides now.

The Smoke Eaters finally get 2014/15 started tomorrow and DAVE will be home next weekend. So the result of all that roster-changing, conditioning and community involvement will be in evidence, on the ice and in the stands, for Smokie hockeyhungry fans to see.

It does seem a lot of intelligent effort has gone into the creation of this year’s team, and one hopes it pays off in a strong season, playoff action and at least a bit of profit for the Trail squad and its dedicated volunteers.

Children do not need to be spanked or hit in order to be appropriately disciplined.

Nonetheless, in most families, one parent tends to be the disciplinarian. As long as you also spend time doing positive things with your children, we wouldn’t worry about that. But your wife and mother-in-law should not be disturbing you at work for minor infractions, and your mother-in-law should

be splitting the cost allows you to get to know someone without worrying about the expense or any future obligation. It’s also a good way to get together with a friend, no romance intended.

Dear Annie: This is for “Concerned Friend,” who thinks her friend is showing signs of dementia.

A few years ago, I noticed that my husband was no longer the active, energetic man I had known for 50 years.

I was afraid he was rapidly succumbing to Alzheimer’s. I mentioned this to his doctor, who attributed it to “old age.” My husband was only 72. I didn’t like the doctor’s response and had my husband see my physician, who submitted him to some tests. At the second visit, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor that was removed two months later.

More recently, I was in constant need of a

nap, my hands were shaky and I couldn’t hold anything without dropping it. This time, I was sure I had Parkinson’s. I went to see the doctor with my self-diagnosis, but I didn’t need to wait for test results. That evening, when I looked at

my nightly medication, I noticed that I had been taking twice the recommended dose.

I’m happy to say I now have the husband I had before, and I can read the mail without picking it up off of the floor three times.

Dr. Hook farewell tour to stop in Castlegar

Legends don’t just breeze through town every day. Well, maybe in a city like Toronto or New York, but not Castlegar.

A date with a legend is coming up at the Element Club, a date not to miss for folks who remember Dr. Hook from his heyday in the 70s. Fans who have muscled their way onto the Medicine Show bandwagon in the years since Dr. Hook burst onto the scene with a cover of

the Rolling Stone will want to secure their tickets for this farewell event.

The miles logged and dates performed over the decades are testaments to the energy and dedication of the Doctor, aka Ray Sawyer, who has maintained a busy touring schedule which has been supported by legions of fans.

According to information gleaned from the Dr. Hook/Ray Sawyer website, 60 gold and platinum records have been

earned worldwide by the group.

Ray has “gained the confidence of a seasoned entertainer and to this day travels the world with his band.” His son Cayce has been touring with him since he was 13 playing percussion and singing background vocals in the show. Now he is the drummer for the band. Ray has had the honour of being Inducted into the Alabama Music Hall Of Fame” in April 2005.
