Thanksgiving food drive this weekend Organizers expecting over 20,000 pounds of food to be collected Devon MacKenzie News staff
The fourth annual B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive takes place this weekend on the Saanich Peninsula. The food drive, which is coordinated every year by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and others, saw about 8,000 donation bags dropped off at residences around the Peninsula this week which will be picked up tomorrow (Saturday) morning after 9:30 a.m. by volunteers. Every single food item collected will be donated to the Sidney Lions Food Bank which serves over 1,200 clients on the Peninsula each month. “We have 60 routes laid out and each route averages 100-175 houses,” explained Ted Murray, the coordinator for the Peninsula B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive. “We dropped off the donation bags earlier in the week and we are expecting to collect around 22,000 pounds of food on Saturday,” he said. Murray said in the first year of the food drive, the group collected 15,000 pounds of food. “The numbers have risen each year we’ve done it as more and more people have become aware of it,” he said, adding that the volunteers who pick up the food see a response rate of about 30 per cent. “We hope it grows again this year,” he said. Anyone who didn’t get a bag dropped off at their home is encouraged to drop off their donations at the food bank in Sidney (in Iroquois Park). “If anyone filled their bag and left it out but it didn’t get picked up, they can also call the number attached to the bag and someone will come pick it up that day,” he added. The food drive, which takes place all over the province, ensures an influx of food into food banks during a particularly low time of year. “From now until Christmas is one of the hardest times for food banks because many people don’t think about donating in the fall,” he said. Meet Constable George Phipps, Sidney North Saanich RCMP’s new Community Police Office who took the reins from Constable Ravi Gunasinghe earlier this summer. Phipps, who has been with the RCMP for 17 years and with Sidney North Saanich RCMP for the last three, says he is looking forward to his new role which will allow him to engage more with the community.

Current Sidney Town Councillor Kenny Podmore announced this week that he won’t be seeking reelection in November’s municipal election. “This has been a very difficult decision for me to make, a decision that my wife Anita and I have made together,” Podmore said in an email to the Peninsula News Review this
week. “It is a very emotional time for me giving up my position as a councillor for this amazing town.” Podmore was elected to council in 2008. The Community Police Officer role is switched out every handful of years to give different members a chance to work in the community. Goldstream News Gazette staffer and former Peninsula News Review reporter and photographer Arnold Lim lived a filmmaker’s dream last week. The photojournalist and videographer visited T-O, joining director Connor Gaston for the premiere of their short film, Godhead at the Toronto International Film Festival. Lim is one of three producers for the 11-minute film, the others being Gaston and Chris Orchard.
Godhead, filmed in and around Victoria, showed at the festival as part of the Short Cuts Canada program. “[I was] excited to see (Greater Victoria) filmmakers represented at the festival, which is one of the largest in the world,” Lim said. “I see this as an opportunity for others who will come after us.” The film is one of 40 shorts accepted into the festival out of more than 800 submissions, he said. Being a part of a film project
being shown on such a large stage has been a goal of Lim’s since he began getting involved in filmmaking, he said. “This is something I hoped to do by the time I was 40 or even 50,” the 36-year-old Saanich resident said. The group hopes to see the film screened at other film festivals, in Calgary and Vancouver and potentially Victoria next February, Lim said. Planting the Gartshore Running for roots for a North Saanich Council greener North Saanich The District of North Saanich received a TD Green Streets Grant for their tree planting initiative in Denham Till Park NORTH SAANICH — The District of North Saanich announced this week that it has been selected by TD friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) and Tree Canada to receive a $3,600 TD Green Streets grant for its 2014 urban reforestation program. The funding will support the District of North Saanich Denham Till Tree Planting Project, which includes the planting of approximately 12 Garry Oak trees in the southern area of the park which is located between Clayton and Birch Roads. “The goal of TD Green Streets is to encourage the adoption of leading-edge practices in municipal forests, and we want to commend the District of North Saanich for developing a plan that will provide such a great enhancement to the environment,” said Mary Desjardins, Executive Director of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. “The plantings will provide habitat and food for wildlife and improve air quality, as well as promote community involvement in the protection and preservation of our urban forest.” “We congratulate the district of North Saanich for developing an initiative that will create an important green space in their community,” said Michael Rosen, the President of Tree Canada. “We are pleased that we have been able to support the efforts of the District of North Saanich and we look forward to seeing their plan come to life.” North Saanich is one of 25 communities selected to receive a TD Green Streets grant. TD Green Streets is open to Canadian municipalities, First Nations communities and Business Improvement Associations (BIAs) across the country. Submissions are reviewed by regional Tree Canada Advisers, Board Members, urban forest practitioners and TD Friends of the Environment foundation representatives. The submissions selections are based on innovation, community involvement and technical expertise. NORTH SAANICH — North Saanich resident Heather Gartshore announced this week that she will be running for a seat on Council this November. Gartshore said in a press release that the timing is right for her to get more actively involved in community governance. “Numerous North Saanich residents, as well as past and present councillors, have encouraged me to run over the years,” said Gartshore. Gartshore is currently the Vice President of the North Saanich Residents Association and Vice Chair of the North Saanich Parks Commission. She said in the press release her decision
Heather Gartshore to seek office is based partly on the discord she’s observed on the present council. “The current council majority has demonstrated a style of leadership that many find objectionable and I believe that North Saanich residents deserve better. “The democratic process is currently not
being well served in our community. I am committed to bringing informed, collaborative and respectful dialogue back to the council chambers.” Gartshore said a main priority for her is to respect the Official Community Plan as the voice of North Saanich residents and a guide to decision making. “I have found it tremendously frustrating that significant decisions related to housing have been made recently without an OCP review or adequate opportunity for engagement with the community.” Gartshore has lived in North Saanich for 26 years. — News staff

Central Saanich Terry Fox Run a success organizer Connie Hearty. “It was very humbling to walk with these every day heroes,” she said. Fox was battling bone cancer when he began his Marathon of Hope in 1980 at the age of 21. He ran the equivalent of a marathon a day for 143 days until they discovered his cancer had spread to his lungs. His run ended in Thunder Bay and he passed away months later at the age of 22. Greater respect needed between cyclists, motorists

fear of death shouldn’t be what keeps people from choosing to ride a bicycle. But it just might. Another cyclist was seriously injured in Victoria this week. The crash was scantly covered by the media, and then drops away. Only weeks ago, a cyclist was killed on the Pat Bay Highway in North Saanich. The devastating results of a crash between a bicycle and a vehicle are quite evident. The roads are packed with vehicles, driven by motorists weighed down by a multitude of potential distractions. Victoria and Esquimalt have been expanding their cyclist infrastructure, but it needs more work. Lots more work. And giving cyclists plenty of room on the road doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be safe from inattentive drivers. But how many times have you seen a motorist park in a bike lane? Fail to yield to a cyclist? Nearly knock a rider over while passing? It happens too often. Drivers and cyclists need to watch for each other at all times, use eye contact and hand signals. Moreover, we all need to make efforts to build greater respect between drivers and cyclists. Let taxpayers decide on amalgamation So the mayors and councillors on the Saanich Peninsula are not in favour of amalgamation, what a shock. Why not just ask them if they like the idea of losing their jobs? Mayor Cross says he’s not in favour as it’s not in the best interest of Sidney. Sidney is all businesses and residential, collecting all kinds of taxes and very little infrastructure to pay for. In Central Saanich, we have lots of property in the ALR, which is great for local food production but not great for collecting tax revenue. Exactly how will combining three municipalities into one cost more? One Mayor and Council instead of three, one fire department, one police force, etc. Don’t ask the fox who should be in charge of the hen house, ask the chickens! Mike MacLean Central Saanich
Ministry caused problems in classrooms Re: Factory model fading for schools (B.C. Views, Sept. 10). I am a retired teacher with 37 years of experience. The biggest mistake that the education ministry in British Columbia has made over my years of teaching (and they have made many), was putting the mentally handicapped into regular classrooms. That robbed good students of the time required to help solve their problems as the teacher was too
busy working with the group whose progress was nil. That decision also immediately required teacher aides, some of whom did very little to help out in the classroom. The ministry caused this problem and now they do not want to fund it. This is typical government mismanagement. Len Schafer West Kelowna
Police should act on intersection problems Are the Central Saanich Police waiting for a physical fight between a car and a pedestrian at the Mount Newton and East Saanich Road intersection? This past week, I had yet another interaction with a car driver at the intersection. After waiting for two cars to cross the intersection, I stepped out before the last car completed crossing the intersection (often if one does not start into the intersection using a car to block, the wait can be long before another opportunity rises to cross). A car making a left turn off East Saanich onto Mount Newton started out while I was in the middle of the Mount Newton east bound lane and almost hit me. The driver expressed his apology with profanity. As he passed me, he was so close my hand came down on the top of his car. A normal person would describe that as a close call, but not the Central Saanich Police. I have tried
complaining numerous times to them about this intersection to no avail. When will the police do their job and police and enforce the rules of the road? Norm Ryder Central Saanich
Virtual classroom model Re: Factory model fading for schools (B.C. Views, Sept. 10). With respect to class size, one thing that is never discussed is the lack of behavioural discipline of the students. Some years ago I had a job as a teaching assistant in the federal prison system, where I noticed that many prisoners were stuck at the grade five level. That led me to take the social service program at a secondary institution to become a teaching assistant in the public schools. While doing my practicum in a school, I was appalled at the chaos in the classroom. Juxtapose that to my experience in public school where we didn’t dare chat, never mind wandering about. If students in a classroom were studying online with only a monitor walking around, the matter of discipline would not be an issue. You could have many students in a classroom, each student progressing at his or her own speed and then have periodic tests as is done through distance education. Ted Grigoleit Burnaby

VICTORIA — Civic workers in North Saanich and Sidney have ratified new labour agreements with their respective employers. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced Sept. 11 that a three-year deal had been reached between employees and the municipalities of Victoria, North Saanich, Colwood, Oak Bay, Sidney, Metchosin, Esquimalt and on the West Shore. Also part of the deal are the Greater Victoria Public Library, Capital Regional District and the Victoria Police Board. While contract language varies, the overall agreement was for wage increases of 1.75 per cent in year one, one per cent in each of January and July of 2015 and two per cent in 2016. The contracts run until December, 2016. Employers ratified the deals in August. — CUPE

Aboriginal leaders opened their meeting with the provincial cabinet Thursday by urging them to resume discussions to recognize aboriginal title instead of dragging out case after case in the courts. Premier Christy Clark convened the special session in Vancouver Thursday after visiting the Nemiah Valley near Williams Lake, where the Tsilhqot’in Nation established title in a landmark ruling in June. Clark signed a letter of understanding with the Tsilhqot’in to work on implementing the verdict of the Supreme Court of Canada ruling, the first to acknowledge title to a specific area of what was considered Crown land. Grand Chief Stewart Phillip of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs told the gathering in Vancouver that Clark’s “public platitudes” echo those of former premier Gordon Campbell in 2009 when he proposed legislation to recognize title province-wide. That proposal caused the B.C. Business Council to “set its hair on fire” and issue “an inflammatory legal opinion” that derailed the effort, Phillip said. In fact it was B.C. aboriginal leaders who voted the proposal down four months after it was pulled from the legislature on the eve of the 2009 B.C. election. Grand Chief Ed John of the First Nations Summit recounted federal and provincial efforts to thwart land claims cases, from prohibiting aboriginal people from hiring lawyers in the 1920s to the tactics used in the 2007 Tsilhqot’in trial. That trial ran for 339 days in B.C. Supreme Court, after 10 pre-trial motions by federal and provincial lawyers trying to have the case thrown out on technical grounds, John said. When that failed, Xeni Gwet’in Chief Roger William, the named plaintiff, was made to testify for 46 days and none of his testimony was used by government lawyers after that, he said. Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad said the Tsilqot’in letter of understanding is a commitment to redress issues of the past, including the “wrongful trial and hanging of the Tsilhqot’in chiefs in 1864-65.” editor@peninsulanewsreview.com

This is the EX trim with leather and navigation, making the fit downright opulent. This isn’t the least expensive car in this class but on the whole it offers so much more than just a price point. The design genius is indisputably Adrian Newey. With ten Constructors’ Championships under his belt, won with three different teams – Williams F1, McLaren and now Infiniti-Red Bull – he has no rival. “Adrian draws up to 100 designs (car parts and components) a week and I mean draws, literally,” informs Silvia. His work is scanned and 3D printers generate models for testing. It’s not a one-man show: more than 600 people design, test, build and assemble the hundreds of thousands of parts required for the race cars driven by Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo. Every season, the 110-strong design team produces a new car that conforms to the strict F1 regulations. A super computer tests every part virtually, before a new model hits the former Concorde jet wind tunnel in nearby Bedford. Its processing power is a closely guarded

Milton Keynes, England: As we climbed into a gleaming Infiniti Q50 sports sedan, one killjoy warned the road to the Belgian Grand Prix would be like a dance – quick, quick, slow. The tour of the Infiniti-Red Bull Racing factory had us pumped and ready to roar Sebastian Vettel-like, along the UK’s motorway network to Folkestone, Kent. There we would take Le Shuttle train beneath the waves of the English Channel to France and on to Spa, Belgium. It would be a
600-kilometre drive (374 miles) and take less than six hours. The doomsayer was right, try ten hours! The aforementioned four-time F1 champ influenced the production of this car so it was a neat idea to take the sharp-looking Q50 on an extended spin to a race weekend. However, plain sailing it was not as we encountered motorway chaos to the EuroTunnel. It was equal parts low-gear slow crawl, near-posted speed limit bursts – enabling a few paddle-flipping-gear changes – and parking pauses

The navigation system ‘lady’ suggested we take the M25 the opposite way around London. Whoops. Should have ignored her. Nevertheless, this was all a blessing because the car was forced to perform in adverse conditions and its mettle/metal was truly tested. Extended time at the wheel of a 328-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 version (starts at $37,500) and a Hybrid ($10,000 more) with a 3.5-litre engine left me scratching my head about which would be my choice. Both provide a quiet, comfortable drive, not averse to a sprint when necessary, all aided by a seven-speed auto transmission that is as a smooth as a baby’s youknow-what. All-wheel-drive would be an option I would choose on either model. Interestingly, the constantly changing speed limits flashing above helped show off the predictive forward collision technology. If you trust the car ahead, the radar-controlled gizmo will govern your speed and braking automatically. In addition, lane control keeps you on the straight and narrow should you drift into that passing car you were alerted to by another warning system. Thanks to the $320 flexi pass, we rolled with ease onto the train and smirked at the lineup with the $120 tickets. About 40 minutes

Unless you’re packing light, or just ditching the bags and merely bringing a debit card with you on a road trip, fitting four people inside and their luggage will be a challenge. On the plus side, the drop top doesn’t take away any precious space when open. Then there’s the optional TomTom navigation that sits atop the dash and cuts into one’s forward visibility. An awkward spot for GPS system. Pairing a Bluetooth device isn’t that straightforward either. Not to mention, the 500C, with its 1.4L engine and humble 101 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque isn’t a stable stallion. Despite its lack of power, pressing the Sport button helps it feel a little peppier. The 5-speed manual transmission is hardly a chore, even when I’m just inching along at a snail’s pace.

The top is down. The sun is shining. It’s not a bad day to be stuck in downtown traffic. John Legend’s “All of Me” comes on the radio while behind the wheel of the 2014 Fiat 500C. As I wait in the Georgia Street parking lot, I listen intently to the song. Some lyrics of the song are: “Love your curves and all your edges, all your perfect imperfections.” Hmmmm. As I contemplate this, it applies directly to the pintsized Fiat I’m captaining. In fact, there are imperfections about this four-seater that drive me crazy but I can’t seem to dislike it. One example is the sound that greets you as you enter its cabin. There is nothing melodic about it. No mellifluous ding-dong ding-done; just a harsh monotone noise that seems to stay longer than an uninvited party guest. Even passengers commented on how annoying it is. The volume buttons on the dash really should be knobs. You should be able to crank up The awesome Beats premium audio system in a hurry, not push by push. (It’s worth the additional $495 price tag.) Visibility is mediocre at best, especially with the top up. The canvas roof doesn’t allow for great visibility when backing up – top up or down – but thankfully there are backup sensors

SIDNEY — The Peninsula Players and the Mary Winspear Centre present Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap next month. The Mousetrap is Christie’s most famous play, and holds a Guinness World Record for most performances in London. This enduring murder mystery has been seen by millions and is now being presented for Greater Victoria audiences by the Peninsula Players. The play opens at the Berwick Royal Oak (next to the Howard Johnson Inn) on Royal Oak Drive on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m. as well as a matinee performance on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. The play then moves to the Charlie White Theatre in the Mary Winspear Centre on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. Tickets ($18 for adults and $15 for seniors and students) for both venues are available online at thepeninsulaplayers.ca and marywinspear.ca and through the Mary Winspear box office at 250-6560275. A fundraiser night taking place tomorrow evening at the Mary Winspear Centre will benefit the Balfour’s Friends Foundation — an organization dedicated to assisting pet owners in need by providing supplementary aid to ensure proper veterinary care can be supplied to their pet. The event, a calendar release for the Firefighters and Friends calendar and the Cops and K-9 calendar takes place Satur-
day, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bodine Hall. The evening will feature music by the O’Brien Family, dancing, a silent auction, door prices, a cash bar and appetizers. Funds raised will go into the organization which, apart from helping needy pet owners with veterinary care, also provides in and out of home care for pets whose owners are incapacitated or hospitalized and unable to immediately arrange for other care. Central Saanich teen releases debut pop album Devon MacKenzie News staff
A 16-year-old Central Saanich resident has his eyes set on stardom, and he’s working hard to make his dreams come true. Tristan Thompson, a student at Stelly’s Secondary School, recently released his debut album Here for You and has recently been featured on YTV and Breakfast Television in Toronto. But his story really began a handful of years ago when he was only 10-years-old. “It was right around the time that Michael Jackson passed away,” Thompson recalled. “I remember being interested in who he was and looking up his music videos on YouTube. Pretty soon after that I had taught myself all of his moves.” At 11-years-old Thompson started performing and busking in Downtown Victoria. “I remember that Canada Day, I had so many people crowded around watching my
Tristan Thompson Michael Jackson act that the police had to come in and start moving people off the road because they were blocking traffic,” he laughed. Soon after, Thompson began performing at weddings and birthday parties, and his father began mentoring him in singing. “I didn’t like singing much because I was quite shy, but once I started singing people started telling me ‘wow, you actually have a great voice’ so I kept on it,” Thompson explained. He said he and his father, Sean, spent many late nights in
their computer room at home practising. “We would just sit around and jam and record. The more I sang the more comfortable I became and then I started recording covers,” he said. Thompson ended up recording a cover of Swedish House Mafia’s Don’t You Worry Child and recorded a video for it with a local production company. The video was then uploaded to YouTube and quickly garnered thousands of views. The video then caught the attention of songwriter and record label owner, Tylor Johnson, and a record contract between Thompson and Chatter Records was signed after some negotiations. “It took us about six months to settle the contract but everything has been really great with the label. It really feels like it was all meant to be,” said Thompson. Thompson’s album, Here for You, was recorded in Novem-
ber in CBC studios in Toronto and was released in April of this year. Since then, he has seen radio play on 100 stations across Canada and even into the U.S.

Championships in Gijon, Spain CENTRAL SAANICH — The Sport Climbing Association of British Columbia (SCBC) announced this week that a number of British Columbia based climbers are returning from the 2014 International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Championships in Gijon, Spain with accolades and some hardware. First and foremost, SCBC member Sean McColl of North Vancouver, British Columbia was crowned the 2014 Men’s Overall
Climbing World Champion, repeating the title he also won in 2012. In Gijon, McColl competed in both the lead and speed disciplines and out of those athletes competing for the men’s overall title, he ranked 3rd overall in Bouldering, 1st overall in Speed, and 1st overall in Lead, all more than enough to give McColl the overall title. Nanaimo’s Elan Jonas-McRae and Kamloops’ Robert Stewart-Patterson, both of whom train at the Boulders Climbing Gym in
Central Saanich, also enjoyed success. Jonas-McRae, competing in his first ever Worlds, completed two strong climbs in the lead competition and finished 29th overall, the second best performance ever by a Canadian at the World Championships, the first belonging to the aforementioned McColl. Combined with McColl’s sixth place performance in lead at Gijon, it also marks the first time ever that Canada has placed two

So you’ve bought a home, or maybe you own a home or office in need of some renovations. The task to plan a project within a budget can be daunting, but hiring an interior designer can help with the bulk of a project’s stress, says Lana Lounsbury. Lounsbury, who is a registered interior designer out of Central Saanich, says hiring a designer can help with a number of things, cost savings being one of the most important. “Hiring a designer can ensure that you’re not going to make huge, expensive mistakes,” Lounsbury said. “I’ve come in halfway through renos in some cases where the people are just so defeated because the project isn’t turning out how they’d planned. An interior designer can see a project through from beginning to end and ensure that it turns out exactly how you planned, and in most cases, better.” Lounsbury said a general fee for an interior designer usually works out to be around five per cent of the project cost. “Of course, it’s dependant on the size and scope of the project, but five per cent is a good rule of thumb,” she said. Interior designers, she continued, will come and consult with the homeowner or renovator and work up a plan for the space. “Generally, a designer will work up two or three versions of a plan after the initial consult. Once the homeowner has decided which plan they want to go with, a designer will fol-

This includes the designer overseeing things like installation, layout and any final checks before any portion of the project is started. “When you hire a designer, what you’re getting is someone who is thinking about the whole process and someone who is there making sure it is done right. The role of a designer is not only to plan and inspire but also to implement and make sure that what you envisioned actually comes through,” Lounsbury said. Lounsbury said hiring a designer comes down to personal preference, but there are some specific factors to watch for.
“Most interior designers are registered with the Interior Designers Institute of B.C. (IDIBC) but it’s not mandated,” she said, adding that if someone isn’t registered, it doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t good. “The most important things are going to be ensuring that you look at samples of the designer’s work and see if it speaks to you. Any good designer should have ample references, testimonials and project photos,” Lounsbury explained. She also noted that all designers should be covered by WorkSafeBC and errors and omissions insurance. Ultimately, Lounsbury said, an interior designer will ensure a homeowner’s satisfaction with a project. “You might spend a little more on
the designer’s fee, but what you save is liability, the headache of planning and executing a project on your own and having someone there who can pull it all together for you. Even if a designer saves you from one mistake, that’s a cost savings,” she said. And, Lounsbury added, there’s the benefit of having a designer purchase the renovation materials for you. “Designers often get wholesale pricing on things, so even with the designer fee you’re probably looking at close to the same cost of buying things at retail. Plus you get the expertise of the designer who knows the best places to source things and what materials you should be investing more or less on,” she said.
