Troy Monkman led the pack around the 100 Mile Marsh during the annual Terry Fox Run, which started at the South Cariboo Visitor Centre, on Sept. 14. While the number of participants and the donations were down slightly this year, organizer Shannon Pennicott said she was still pleased with how the event went.

Folks will be eager to learn the results of the British Columbia public school teachers vote slated for yesterday (Sept. 18) on whether they accept the deal that would see schools reopen for classes within days. Meanwhile, B.C. Teacher's Federation (BCTF) president Jim Iker says it looks positive, as its executive committee is recommending ratification through a “yes” vote by its union members. On Sept. 16, following several days of closeddoor negotiations with mediator Vince Ready at the bargaining table, BCTF representatives signed an agreement-in-committee with the BC Public School Employers’ Association. “The tentative agreement will provide new support for students, ensure there are more specialist and classroom teachers in schools working with children, and protect teachers’ constitutional rights as the court case continues,” says Iker. “Thanks to the courageous stand teachers took on the picket lines and the strong support of parents and other unions, B.C. teachers were able to get new money invested in schools and reach a mutually agreed-to process to deal with any future court decision on class size, class composition and staffing levels.” The several key achievements for teachers and students include fair pay for teachers teaching full weeks on call, an annual education fund, several hundred new teaching positions each year and improvements in salary and extended health benefits. A significant grievance remedy fund will also be used as a one-time payment to teachers and to improve elementary preparation time. While some districts are scheduled to have a professional development day on Monday, the School District#27 (SD27) Pro-D day happens later, on Sept. 26. Providing teachers have ratified the agreement, SD27 superintendent Mark Thiessen says all its own public schools in the Cariboo Chilcotin will resume Monday (Sept. 22) for a half day in the morning.
