Coun. Michelle Kirby is bound and determined to change the travel patterns of students in Oak Bay. More questions than answers left her fellow council members unsure and narrowly supporting her motion to write a letter to the Capital Regional District endorsing a school travel planning co-ordinator position. Oak Bay Sea Rescue and its many volunteers celebrated a secure and safe new boathouse – still bearing a fresh-wood smell, last Friday. Rescue staff with the volunteer organization ferried guests around the Oak Bay Marina to the boathouse where they could lean over the mezzanine rail and watch the vessel lift in action. But before the water tours, Oak Bay Marine Group had a surprise announcement for the society that supports Oak Bay’s Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 33. “This is a great day for the community. They work tirelessly and they give their energy and their time their volunteer hours to making our world and our waters this recreational playground, a much safer place for us to

be part of and enjoy,” said Peter Ciceri, CEO of OBMG. “We’re very, very grateful to the contribution you make to us, and to the community as a whole.” To resounding cheers and applause, he handed the giant cheque made out for $30,000 to Oak Bay Sea Rescue society president Terry Calveley. “I’m not usually speechless but today I am,” she said. “This support from the Oak Bay Marine Group has gone way beyond our expectations and we truly are humbled and grateful.” Ciceri said the marine group is grateful for the partnership. The rescue organization, which started in 1977, was out to celebrate replacing the old boathouse after a major fundraising push for the shiny new building now gracing the marina. “We simply outgrew our

Oak Bay High school students won’t let kids with cancer down Laura Lavin

Despite limited access to their school and more limited means of communication between students due to the teacher’s strike, some 50 Oak Bay High students turned out at an organizational meeting to raise money for kids with cancer. “Social media is key definitely,” said Jessica Manness, 17, one of this year’s campaign leaders. “We had a few meetings with key members then we had a big group meeting and we decided to go forward.” Oak Bay High is well-known for its large annual donation to the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, a long distance bike ride which raises money for pediatric cancer research and programs for children with a history of cancer. The Tour de Rock team cycles from one end of Vancouver Island to the other, over 14 days, covering 1,000 kilometres. “Normally, for Cops for Cancer, there is 15 different things going on at the school. But we’re not in school this year so we’ve brought it down to about five main events,” said Taylor Chan, 17, another campaign leader.

Along with Claire Wood, 17, the three campaign leaders are doing their best to keep the energy going in the campaign and doing what they can to make sure when the Tour de Rock riders arrive in Oak Bay on Oct. 2, Oak Bay High students will be on hand with a big cheque to donate. “We’ve amped up the online (campaign). People can donate through the website,” added Wood. Oak Bay High vice principal Murray Allen is helping the students stay “pumped up” said Manness. “He really came through for us,” she said. The students have already held a three-day bake sale and car wash to raise money and this weekend will hold one of their biggest money makers, a bottle drive. “We have an account set up at the bottle depot, so people can go directly there and donate to the Oak Bay High Cops for Cancer account,” said Wood. Residents are also invited to leave bottles by the curb before 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 for students to collect. Students will also be collecting bottles at the school, 2151 Cranmore Rd., between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. this Saturday. New this year is a community

fair which will be held at Willows Park on Sunday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event includes face painting, obstacle courses, entertainment, prizes and a barbecue. All money raised at the event goes toward Cops for Cancer. “When I first started at Oak Bay High, Cops for Cancer (fundraising) started as soon as school began,” said Chan. “For me, at the time, I thought, ‘it’s just a fundraiser, what’s everybody so excited about?’ Then they show you a video about Camp Goodtimes, the campaign leaders talk to you about it – it’s so amazing, everyone is so invested in this cause, it really helps bring everyone together.” Last year, the school donated in excess of $56,000 to the Tour de Rock, this year, the students say, they are aiming just as high. “This year, it’s about showing what OB Nation can still do,” said Manness. “There’s no reason they should have to tell kids they don’t get to go to camp this year.” Donate to the Oak Bay High Cops for Cancer campaign online at oakbay.sd61.bc.ca, click on the link at the top of the page. editor@oakbaynews.com

Elections should be inclusive The race is on. Candidates are beginning to come forward for our consideration in the municipal election Nov. 15. On that date, Oak Bay residents – along with residents around the province – will be entrusted to elect a mayor, city councillors and school trustees who will represent us for the next four years. Rather than categorize and divide us, these diversities can create a broader perspective. Compromise and co-operation are a part of democracy. Of course we realize that counting councillors by gender – or any classification – is an oversimplification. Candidates will be judged on their merit, character, priorities and promises, their strength and smarts, their motivation and intentions. We hope that this fall, voters will have the chance to elect just the sort of representatives we’re looking for, both men and women.

Winchester celebrates with 20/20 vision Did you know?

Avis Rassmusen slips through the front door, through an alcove, past a trio of older Emily Carr works. It’s the kind of minor Monday morning event at Winchester Gallery that sums up the expectations for 20/20: A Celebratory Exhibition that opens tomorrow. The show runs the gamut from Oak Bay’s most widely known, to our most easily accessed artists. “You’re surrounded by museum-quality masterworks by two of Canada’s most prominent artists,” said spokesperson Elizabeth Levinson, seated before the trio of Carr paintings, gesturing to David Blackwood’s Ephram Kelloway’s Door. “One of Canada’s most important painters, (Carr) used to come from James Bay every summer … she would summer in Oak Bay in a cottage on Foul Bay,” said Levinson. She expects Carr will garner “significant increase to her international reputation” with 100 works on display in London (Nov. 1 to March 22 at Dulwich Picture Gallery) next month, followed by an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. As we sit enjoying the two Canadian classics, Rasmussen, an active and highly visible Oak Bay artist comes through the front door. She is artist-in-residence at Oak Bay Beach Hotel this month. She paints en plein air in the seaside gardens there on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Specializing in Canadian, American and international

fine art, Winchester Galleries and Winchester Modern have established a reputation for representing many of Canada’s world-class established and emerging artists. Gunter Heinrich and Anthony Sam, of Winchester Galleries and Winchester Modern first opened a small venue at the Oak Bay junction 20 years ago and now includes the gallery on Oak Bay

Avenue and one in downtown Victoria. “We are honoured to be marking the occasion of our 20th anniversary with a show of masterworks,” said Heinrich. 20/20: A Celebratory Exhibition includes 110 masterworks curated by Heinrich and his staff. Of note are AC-96-004 by William Perehudoff; Andy Warhol’s 1967 Portraits of the

Artists; Écran chromatique by Claude Tousignant; La Malbaie, Quebec by A.Y. Jackson; Emily Carr’s 1936 Tangle; and the large 1964 mixed media, Sans titre by Jean Paul Riopelle. Other featured artists in the exhibition are Jack Shadbolt, Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, David Milne, Joseph Plaskett and Blackwood. It also includes a handful of emerging artists they’re being watchful of, such as Oak Bay’s Tristram Lansdowne, and Abe Murley (one of his works also hangs opposite the trio of Carr’s). A special preview of the exhibition will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. “That’s an opportunity for clients to come through and see the work … often collectors like the opportunity to see the work without the party atmosphere,” Levinson said. Cigarette butts are the constant winner in terms of big numbers during the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. That’s true for anywhere, even the shores of McNeill Bay says Joe Blake, of the Community Association of Oak Bay. “It’s a pretty clean beach. People in Oak Bay are pretty good,” he says. The association hosts the cleanup each year, along with volunteers from the community, which

Milton Keynes, England: As we climbed into a gleaming Infiniti Q50 sports sedan, one killjoy warned the road to the Belgian Grand Prix would be like a dance – quick, quick, slow. The tour of the Infiniti-Red Bull Racing factory had us pumped and ready to roar Sebastian Vettel-like, along the UK’s motorway network to Folkestone, Kent. There we would take Le Shuttle train beneath the waves of the English Channel to France and on to Spa, Belgium. It would be a

600-kilometre drive (374 miles) and take less than six hours. The doomsayer was right, try ten hours! The aforementioned four-time F1 champ influenced the production of this car so it was a neat idea to take the sharp-looking Q50 on an extended spin to a race weekend. Darkness enveloped the road ahead but our way through Belgium was lit by the most spectacular electric storm. Ah yes, the windshield wipers performed efficiently in a downpour of Biblical proportions. We finally reached Spa, birthplace of Agatha Christie’s fictional detective Hercule Poirot, and famous for its therapeutic cold springs. By the time we arrived, we’d had enough of the cold springs from above. The inclement weather didn’t dampen our spirits as we rubbed shoulders for the next two days with the fast and the fashionable in the Formula One Paddock Club at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. Champers was the breakfast of champions at the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix, if you had the admission price of $3,500 burning a hole in your jeans.

The navigation system ‘lady’ suggested we take the M25 the opposite way around London. Whoops. Should have ignored her. Nevertheless, this was all a blessing because the car was forced to perform in adverse conditions and its mettle/metal was truly tested. Extended time at the wheel of a 328-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 version (starts at $37,500) and a Hybrid ($10,000 more) with a 3.5-litre engine left me scratching my head about which would be my choice. Both provide a quiet, comfortable drive, not averse to a sprint when necessary, all aided by a seven-speed auto transmission that is as a smooth as a baby’s youknow-what. All-wheel-drive would be an option I would choose on either model. Interestingly, the constantly changing speed limits flashing above helped show off the predictive forward collision technology. If you trust the car ahead, the radar-controlled gizmo will govern your speed and braking automatically. In addition, lane control keeps you on the straight and narrow should you drift into that passing car you were alerted to by another warning system. Thanks to the $320 flexi pass, we rolled with ease onto the train and smirked at the lineup with the $120 tickets. About 40 minutes

Read all about it Athlone Travel has started a travel book exchange in its office at 104-2187 Oak Bay Ave. “Destination guides don’t really age,” says Athlone Travel owner Liz Smith. “The Eiffel Tower is there and it’s not moving.” With the expense of purchasing travel books on the increase, the impetus to recycle, along with the number of their clients looking for extra travel information, Smith decided to start the travel book

Dorothy Gale reminds us, “There’s no place like home” and likely the latest spate of Oak Bay resident actors would love to play such a classic Disney role as they dish out their own hometown tales at an open house billed as “Spend a Day at CCPA.” The Canadian College of Performing Arts, not quite a block from Oak Bay village is home to the three-year program that draws young performers from across the nation and their open house on Sept. 20 is designed to inspire, inform, and launch the 17th season. The day will feature a society meeting and demonstrations. “You can take a tour of learning. If you want you can even participate,” said Darold Roles, artistic and education director. Classes of stage combat to oneon-one singing instruction will be on display while popcorn and chocolate fondue keep things classy. “We’re showcasing our students and where their homes are,” added Roles, of a display offered by students. That evening, the yearthree students that make up Company C will host a familyfriendly cabaret fundraiser at the campus, 1701 Elgin Rd. “They learn how to run their own company in third year,” Roles explained. It’s the start of a year where third year students host their own shows, learning all about business, props and more as they get set to cap their student career. Company C also hosts Spring

Awakening in association with The Belfry Theatre at the Belfry from Oct. 21 to Nov. 2. The Tony Award–Winning Broadway rock musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer turmoil of life and sexuality.

They are the future leaders of the Canadian cultural mosaic, so it’s an inspiring show.” Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility runs from Dec. 3 to 7 at a location yet to be found. Six Characters in Search of an Author is slated for Jan. 29 to Feb. 1, 2015 at the CCPA performance hall, 1701 Elgin Rd. Casino Royale 006 Never Say Never Again is Feb. 5. The fundraiser once voted Favourite Artsy Fundraiser by Monday Magazine’s M Awards is again held at at the glamorous Oak Bay Beach Hotel, 1175 Beach Dr. “It’s a sparkly evening where people get to dress up and there’s sassy entertainment by our students,” Roles said. Feb. 19 to 21, the CCPA performance hall will transform to an airport waiting lounge for Cities & Girls, a world premier of the dramatic music theatre event adapted

for the stage from the works of internationally renowned Canadian spoken word writer/performer Myra Davies. Broadway Lights, a performance with the Victoria Symphony runs March 20 to 22 at the Royal Theatre. Tickets and information are available at victoriasymphony.ca. The season wraps with Smokey Joe’s Café from April 16 to 25. CCPA presents the Grammy Award-winning Broadway review, directed and choreographed by Roles, at the performance hall on Elgin Road. Roles expects the longer runs at the Elgin Road hall will inspire residents to want the growing arts college to stay in the community. “We give a lot to the community,” he said, citing carolling at Christmas and visits to seniors homes. “A lot of people don’t realize the footprint we have,” said Steven Seltzer, communications and marketing manager. “We would like to stay in Oak Bay. It’s not our only option, but we have strong ties here.” The private college is owned by the non-profit Canadian Heritage Arts Society that will hold its annual general meeting Sept. 20 and discussion will include options for growth as the school has overfilled the church space for a couple of years now. “We need support, vocal support and funding,” said Roles, in hopes of hearing ideas from the art-loving public. Some Oak Bay real estate agents were a little concerned when the typical post-winter housing market upswing took a while to materialize. Patience has paid off for buyers, sellers and realtors alike, however, as the market showed better than expected results for a typically slower period of the year, summer holiday time. “It was an interesting spring,” said realtor Cassie Kangas of DFH Realty. “Winter was kind of busy right out of the gate, then spring took a long time to take off – then suddenly at the beginning of summer there were a whole lot of listings.” Figures released by the Victoria Real Estate Board last week showed significant improvement over the previous year. Last month 609 properties were sold, a 12-per-cent increase over the 540 sold in August 2013. It’s not just a summer blip: year-to-date sales for the region are running at a 10.5-per-cent better clip than by this time in 2013. “We are seeing a trend and I hope the momentum carries us through to the end of the year,” said

There has been a change in venue for Oak Bay High’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock bottle drive. The event will now take place at Oak Bay High school in the parking lot. Oak Bay High Cops For Cancer Bottle Drive is on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents are asked to drop off their empty drink containers to raise money for the Tour de Rock.
