1. No Time like the Present. The term “fall bulb” can be confusing to new gardeners, as it refers to the planting time, rather than the blooming time. Daffodils, hyacinths, tulips and other bulbs are known as the messengers of spring. The time to plant them, however, is now. Some people prefer the term spring blooming bulbs. 2. A Bulb by any Other Name. Besides true bulbs, such as tulips, allium, garlic and daffodils, there are other underground roots of bulbous plants. These include corms, tubers and rhizomes. Corms are similar to bulbs, but without layers. Gladiolas and spring crocuses grow from corms. A famous example for a tuber is the potato and dahlias and some begonias also grow from tubers. Iris, canna and lily-of-the-valley are examples of plants growing from rhizomes. 3. Compact Storage Houses. Whether it is bulbs, corms, tubers or rhizomes, the big advantage of these root types is that they can store all the nutrients the plant needs to grow in the coming season. This makes planting with bulbs easy, and bulbs come closer to guaranteeing success than any other type of garden plant. 4. Picking a Winner. Success with bulbs begins with choosing high quality bulbs, and in general the larger the bulb, the larger the bloom. When you buy bulbs, they should be firm and free from deep blemishes, cuts or soft spots.Bulbs should be planted as soon as outdoor conditions are suitable. If planting is delayed, store the bulbs in a cool place such as a refrigerator. Do not store them in plastic bags since the bulbs need to breathe. 5. Planting in the Snow. Planting fall bulbs is best done as long as the soil is soft enough to dig a hole. You will find detailed instructions on how deep and how far apart to plant the bulbs on the package. Plant with the pointed side up - that’s the stem. A bit of bone meal in the bottom of the hole will help develop strong roots, and a good drink after replacing the soil in the hole will help close any air pockets. 6. The Return of the Tulip. You may get tulips back for a year or two. For best results when you are encouraging tulips to return, do not remove their leaves until they have yellowed and withered and come away from the bulb with a light tug. 7. Not all Bulbs are Equal. After a winter of having to dig through the snow, tulips and crocus are like candy to hungry deer. There are, however, some spring-blooming bulbs that will likely have deer turning up their noses and away from your yard. You cannot beat daffodils - they are somewhat poisonous and put off a smell that animals tend to find repulsive. Hyacinths, grape hyacinths, snowdrops and allium are other fall bulbs that deer seem to leave alone. 8. Crocus’ Fall Cousin. Crocus blooms are some of the first messengers of spring, but some of their relatives announce fall approaching instead. The true fall crocus as well as colchicum, a close relative to the iris, are both fabulous bulbs to grow. If you plant them now, they will bloom for you next fall. 9. Don’t Mind the Smell. Garlic is another bulb best planted in the fall. You separate the individual cloves from the bulb and plant them in the ground in clusters or neat rows about a foot apart. Garlic will be growing in the ground for about nine months. Amending the soil with compost before planting is a great way of supplying it with the nutrients it needs. 10. You Can’t Force It! Or Can You? Fall is a great time to prepare your favourite spring-bloomers for winter flowering indoors. Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocus are all great for “forcing”. The bulbs have to get a cold treatment in the fridge for several weeks, depending on variety, before they can be planted in pots for a show of colour in the dead of winter.

Off to school and back to court B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher Whatever cease-fire emerges from the latest round in the war for control of B.C.’s public school system, the next court battle is ready to proceed. Lawyers for the provincial government and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation have filed their written submissions to the B.C. Court of Appeal. At issue is whether legislation removing union contract terms that dictated class size and teacher staff levels was a violation of members’ constitutional rights to freedom of association. When B.C. Supreme Court justice Susan Griffin found that it was, the government changed legislation again. The same judge ordered that struck down and the 2002 contract language reinstated retroactively for every contract since then, imposed or negotiated. The government says that would create chaos as well as billions in expenses, pushing out full-day kindergarten and other allocations of space and money
that have proceeded since union control was removed. Griffin’s order is stayed pending this appeal. If you think the latest strike has been disruptive, you don’t want to see what this judge’s vision would look like. Government lawyers argue that the BCTF’s constitutional right claim is “wrong in law” and amounts to a veto that blocks the province’s ability to legislate in response to changing conditions. “According to the BCTF, legislation may improve on collective agreement entitlements but cannot remove them over the objections of the union without violating [the Charter of Rights and Freedoms],” the government’s submission says. “On the BCTF’s theory, collective agreement entitlements become constitutionally protected in perpetuity.” What that would mean to voters is when they throw out an NDP government that handed the keys to the treasury to public sector unions, the unions can veto that too. And when mandated
minimum teacher-librarians sitting in rooms full of paper books become the equivalent of buggy whip weavers, they must remain as long as the union wants. BCTF’s lawyers submit that the government is wrong in fact as well as law. Its arguments are technical, dwelling particularly on the fact that the government didn’t appeal Griffin’s first ruling. For instance, there have actually been two negotiated deals since 2002. The one in 2006 provided five years of raises and a bonus to get the government past the 2010 Olympics, and in 2012 there was a preelection truce negotiated with the help of mediator Charles Jago. The government argues that re-imposing 2002 conditions would overturn other contracts that were agreed to by the BCTF. BCTF’s lawyers say, in effect, the deleted terms covering working conditions weren’t there to negotiate. The Coalition of B.C. Businesses has entered the case as an intervener, arguing for the supremacy of elected governments when providing public services. Its submission notes that unlike private disputes, the right to strike is often curtailed in the
public sector, and sometimes eliminated as in the case of police and health care. “When critical aspects of public policy are jeopardized by employee demands, those aspects could be legislated; where a fiscal downturn or inflationary pressures required austerity measures, they could be implemented through legislation; where strikes jeopardize important public services, the legislature could pass back-to-work legislation, and so on.” It’s been obvious for many years that the BCTF doesn’t function like a normal union, and isn’t much interested in starting to do so. Its leadership sees itself as an agent of “social justice,” a belief demonstrated by its promotion of flawed poverty statistics and pronouncements on everything from U.S. labour law to conflict in the Middle East. Its decades-old instruction to government is blunt: raise taxes and give us the money.

Coaching hockey at the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) level isn’t easy. The players at this level of hockey are generally extremely skilled and dedicated, with some of them being away from home for the first time. Not only does the coach have to prepare the team to win and the players to compete, he has to deal with aspects of the lives of players separated from their families. For this 2014/2015 season however, Kimberley Dynamiters Coach Jerry Bancks is fortunate that his team has 11 local players rounding out the roster—players he is used to coaching. I’ve been coaching these guys since grade six in the school program,” said Bancks. “The school programs ran in McKim and Selkirk with the Hockey Academy.” Bancks was instrumental in creating the Hockey Academy 11 years ago. From that program came players such as Carter Bancks, who played the 2013– 14 season under contract to with the Calgary Flames, Payton Lee, Ryan Chynoweth and plenty of other highcalibre players. “I know these kids and their character. It’s definitely easier when they know what I stand for. Fitness is big for me. I always try to make it so we win the third period and I have players who work hard,” explained Bancks. As for the players who are with the team from other locations, such as Keenan Haase from
California and Liam McBain from Portland, Bancks said that these players are a nice surprise and a worthy addition to the team. The same can be said for the players who came back this season from Calgary. “They did a great job in the off-season and came back even fitter, faster and stronger than last year.” Bancks said that the main goal for the team, or for any team is to have a guaranteed playoff spot by mid-season. To make that happen, he is working on rounding out the team’s skills. “Right now, we’re probably more offensive than defensive. We just don’t have as much experience on the blue line and that’s probably the number one thing we are working on,” said Bancks. “We gave up 30 shots the other night and I want to get that down to 20 or 25. We do have good goal-tending though with Tyson Brouwer returning. We’ll get to see Liam McBain in net this coming weekend.” As for the team to beat this year, he noted that Fernie has plenty of 19 and 20-year-olds— meaning the Dynamiters have to counter that extra size and experience. But the real story behind any success the Dynamiters have had, according to Bancks, is the hockey system behind them. He explained that the area has a great program and that it works because of all the volunteers, sponsors and parents who believe in both the program and the players.

low flag-iris (Iris pseudacorus). Seemingly harmless and eye-catching at first glance, this plant poses a significant threat to surrounding ecosystems. Sword-shaped leaves and showy yellow flowers with three sepals distinguish yellow flag-iris, making it a gardening favourite world-wide. Native to Europe, the British Isles, North Africa and the Mediterranean region, yellow flag-iris is considered invasive in BC. Yellow flag-iris reproduces quickly through seed dispersal and horizontal root systems, creating thickets in the water like cattails (Typha spp.), and reaching 1.5 metres in height. Several hundred flowering plants may be connected rhizomatously under the water, and
fragments can form new plants when they break off and drift downstream. The East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council (EKIPC) is seeking volunteers in Skookumchuck at 1 pm on Sunday, September 21, to assist local residents to remove yellow flag iris from a small tributary of the Kootenay River. Hugs: Big, Big Hugs to all those traffic control people out there keeping us safe. Awesome job folks. Hugs: A big hug to the Bible Mission’s Thrift Store, especially Glen, Sharon & Albert. I love volunteering there on Tuesdays, however I had to miss last Tuesday due to an injury. Albert called and told me others were praying for me. Hugs: My hugs are bigger than big for all the amazing doctors and medical staff that have gone out of their way to help me be an Overcomer in my latest journey regarding a reoccurrence of cancer, from the staff in Emergency and those on the second floor. Every tech, clerk, nurse etc. are truly amazing. Leslie French Hugs: To my amazing physician Dr.Tait, Specialist Dr. Simon, Dr. Chan and your lovely staffers. You give much of yourself for people like me and that is worth so much. Your professionalism and caring is outstanding. For all those I met and your names escape me, your faces and actions are well remembered. A grateful heart thank you, Leslie French Hugs: Big hugs to the staff at the “downtown” Subway for marking the names of the subs on the wrappers. Slugs: Big, slimy slugs to those two vehicles that cut me off at the intersection of Baker and 10th as I was just about to go with the “walk” sign..........Thanks so much for your non-courtesy action of the day! Hugs: A huge hug to the 2 kind women in their car at the Tamarack shopping centre parking lot who stayed to make sure I was ok when I couldn’t find my car. Your kindness was very appreciated. Hugs: Great big hugs to everyone involved with the Fall Fair at Fort Steele. What a wonderful experience for all!! The Fort looked wonderful and clean with so many freshly painted buildings, the exhibits were tastefully displayed and there were LOTS of things to see and do. Thank you everyone for a great day!

Milton Keynes, England – The security here seemingly rivals that of the most top-secret government institutions. “Without the proper finger you can’t get in,” says Silvia Halfar, grinning while prodding the fingerprint scanner. The door clicks open to the Infiniti-Red Bull Racing factory, where we would observe the hi-tech production techniques behind the success of four-time world F1 champion driver Sebastian Vettel and the four Constructors’ Championship titles earned by the team. The design genius is indisputably Adrian Newey. With ten Constructors’ Championships under his belt, won with three different teams – Williams F1, McLaren and now Infiniti-Red Bull – he has no rival. “Adrian draws up to 100 designs (car parts and components) a week and I mean draws, literally,” informs Silvia. His work is scanned and 3D printers generate models for testing. It’s not a one-man show: more than 600 people design, test, build and assemble the hundreds of thousands of parts required for the race cars driven by Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo. Every season, the 110-strong design team produces a new car that conforms to the strict F1 regulations. A super computer tests every part virtually, before a new model hits the former Concorde jet wind tunnel in nearby Bedford. peering through the windows of a huge gym. “The race team has to keep fit,” said Silvia, anticipating our question. There are also trainers and nutritionists available to the pit side crew. Turns out the garage guys practice pit stops every day within the factory’s four walls. “The team holds the world record for a pit stop in 1.923 seconds!” she added. Every one-hundredth of a second can mean the difference between a win and loss. Shortly before leaving, we stand by a windowless wall. It’s the operations room, in where live data is analysed and information fed back to the racetrack. No admittance. “After one race the winning team Tweeted a picture of their ops room . . . . we could see who was in the room and what programs they were running on their monitors.” With that, the exit door buzzed and the cool air rushed in to take our places.

Milton Keynes, England: As we climbed into a gleaming Infiniti Q50 sports sedan, one killjoy warned the road to the Belgian Grand Prix would be like a dance – quick, quick, slow. The tour of the Infiniti-Red Bull Racing factory had us pumped and ready to roar Sebastian Vettel-like, along the UK’s motorway network to Folkestone, Kent. There we would take Le Shuttle train beneath the waves of the English Channel to France and on to Spa, Belgium. It would be a 600-kilometre drive (374 miles) and take less than six hours. The doomsayer was right, try ten hours! The aforementioned fourtime F1 champ influenced the production of this car so it was a neat idea to take the sharplooking Q50 on an extended spin to a race weekend. However, plain sailing it was not as we encountered motorway chaos to the EuroTunnel. It was equal parts low-gear slow crawl, near-posted speed limit bursts – enabling a few paddle-flipping-gear changes – and parking pauses long enough to test the eight-position power seat adjustments and play with the large dual touch screen infotainment displays. The navigation system ‘lady’ suggested we take the M25 the opposite way around London. Whoops. Should have ignored her. Nevertheless, this was all a blessing because the car was
forced to perform in adverse conditions and its mettle/metal was truly tested. Extended time at the wheel of a 328-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 version (starts at $37,500) and a Hybrid ($10,000 more) with a 3.5-litre engine left me scratching my head about which would be my choice. Both provide a quiet, comfortable drive, not averse to a sprint when necessary, all aided by a seven-speed auto transmission that is as a smooth as a baby’s you-knowwhat. All-wheel-drive would be an option I would choose on either model. Interestingly, the constantly changing speed limits flashing above helped show off the predictive forward collision technology. If you trust the car ahead, the radar-controlled gizmo will govern your speed and braking automatically. In addition, lane control keeps you on the straight and narrow should you drift into that passing car you were alerted to by another warning system. Thanks to the $320 flexi pass, we rolled with ease onto the train and smirked at the lineup with the $120 tickets. About 40 minutes later, we were enjoying the French countryside, travelling for extended periods at the construction zone speed of 30 klicks. Darkness enveloped the road ahead but our way through Belgium was lit by the most spectacular electric storm. Ah yes, the windshield wipers performed efficiently in a downpour of Biblical proportions. We finally reached Spa, birthplace of Agatha Christie’s fictional detective Hercule Poirot, and famous for its therapeutic cold springs. By the time we arrived, we’d had enough of the cold springs from above. The inclement weather didn’t dampen our spirits as we rubbed shoulders for the next two days with the fast and the fashionable in the Formula One Paddock Club at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. The top is down. The sun is shining. It’s not a bad day to be stuck in downtown traffic. John Legend’s “All of Me” comes on the radio while behind the wheel of the 2014 Fiat 500C. As I wait in the Georgia Street parking lot, I listen intently to the song. Some lyrics of the song are: “Love your curves and all your edges, all your perfect imperfections.” Hmmmm. As I contemplate this, it applies directly to the pint-sized Fiat I’m captaining. In fact, there are imperfections about this four-seater that drive me crazy but I can’t seem to dislike it. One example is the sound that greets you as you enter its cabin. There is nothing melodic about it. No mellifluous ding-dong ding-done; just a harsh monotone noise that seems to stay longer than an uninvited party guest. Even passengers commented on how annoying it is. The volume buttons on the dash really should be knobs. You should be able to crank up The awesome Beats premium audio system in a hurry, not push by push. (It’s worth the additional $495 price tag.) Visibility is mediocre at best, especially with the top up. The canvas roof doesn’t allow for great visibility when backing up – top up or down – but thankfully there are backup sensors that help guide you into the spot you want to be in. The trunk only hosts 269 L. Unless you’re packing light, or just ditching the bags and merely bringing a debit card with you on a road trip, fitting four people inside and their luggage will be a challenge. On the plus side, the drop top doesn’t take away any precious space when open. Then there’s the optional TomTom navigation that sits atop the dash and cuts into one’s forward visibility. An awkward spot for GPS system. Pairing a Bluetooth device isn’t that straightfor-
ward either. Not to mention, the 500C, with its 1.4L engine and humble 101 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque isn’t a stable stallion. Despite its lack of power, pressing the Sport button helps it feel a little peppier. The 5-speed manual transmission is hardly a chore, even when I’m just inching along at a snail’s pace. While its imperfections should cause me to think about ever wanting to drive or own one, I still can’t seem to stop loving this little car. I like its quirkiness and the fact that it’s not perfect. I love the exterior colour: Espresso. It sparkles in the sun and has a warm richness to it. When matched with the two-toned leather-trimmed bucket seats, it looks stylish and chic. Bringing the outside in, the espresso paint also colours to life the dash. Combined with ivory touches, it has an upscale ambiance. The tester, being the Lounge trim of 500C, it has an MSRP of $23,995. That comes with keyless entry, a chrome shift knob, leather-wrapped steering wheel (and the aforementioned leather seating surfaces with heated front seats), 4-wheel disc brakes, ABS, hill start assist and more. When not stuck in traffic, the 500C actually remains quiet on the open road, with the top up, of course. It certainly doesn’t handle like its race-primed sibling, the Abarth, but still manages to turn on a dime when required. It’s also a lovely road companion because imperfections on the road aren’t felt with abrasion or discomfort. Furthermore, if you want to shed some light on the cabin, there are three settings you can use at the push of a button. One is a sunroof-like option, the next goes about 2/3 of the way down, and the last is all the way down. Either way, you have options on how much Vitamin D you’d like to consume. I feel like I’m back in grade school, sitting on the grass field at lunch, plucking the petals of a dandelion, one by one, saying, “I love it, I don’t love it, I love it, I don’t love… I LOVE IT!” Visit www.fiatcanada.com for more information. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Dave Wassick August 2, 1949-September 15, 2014 With trumpets sounding, the angels of heaven rejoice as Dave Wassick has been called home on September 15, 2014. He is now peacefully casting his fishing line in paradise. Dave was born in Nelson BC, to Harry “Red” and Dorothy Wassick on August 2, 1949. His brothers and sisters are Guy (Dianne) Wassick, Harriet (Nick) Bowolin, Juliet (Bill) Genero, and Brant Wassick. They will forever have great memories of growing up with Dave at Kootenay Lake, playing on the beach, fishing and doing any and every sport. He also made a lot of great memories with the Pepin’s, as part of his great big family. In the heavens, Dave is awaiting his wife Jeannie Argatoff who he so cherished, and his children Renee Wassick, Erin and Paul Werbicki, Sherri and Gary McPherson, Erin Argatoff and Karie Daniel, and Robert and Kayla Argatoff. He continues to watch over his beautiful grandchildren Donovan, Anya, Kate, Tegan, Gracie and Ella. Dave is a beloved son, brother, father, friend, husband and Dyeda (grandpa).
