Derailed case the tip of the iceberg: Foster

POPE TAWADROS II

BY MURRAY CRAWFORD ADVOCATE STAFF A retired judge and former attorney general of Alberta said he knew criminal prosecutions would get stayed if the current court space crunch continued. Jim Foster END OF MEDIATION of Red Deer PROGRAM PUT MORE believes more PRESSURE ON THE prosecutions COURTS A2 may be derailed in the future for the same reason. Foster has been pushing hard for many years for a new courthouse in the city. News that home invasion charges against three individuals were stayed this week in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench because it took too long for the matter to get to trial didn’t surprise him. “I was not shocked at the stay Justice Monica Bast ordered,” said Foster. “I’ve been expecting this and it’s just the beginning. The public are going to get upset as alleged criminals get to walk the streets because they can’t get tried.” While some lawyers have pointed to the lack of Queen’s Bench justices in Red Deer as the reason for the home invasion trial being delayed for 27 and a half months, Foster said they still need to have more space to accommodate any new justices.

BARRSIDE

Also attending were friends, family, officials, and the inevitable dignitaries. Immigrants come here with their brave hearts full of apprehension, maybe even a bit of fear. Most of them have no real idea what winter is. Some say they love the snow. They just haven’t shovelled enough of it yet. Others talk about discovering the complete unjoy of cold weather. I’m with them. If only they could have brought along some of those warm climates they left behind. They are from the Philippines, Haiti, Fiji, Columbia, Guatemala, Iran, Pakistan, India, Mexico, China, Israel, and elsewhere — even a few from Germany and England. It is multiculturalism before one’s very eyes.
