While Salt Spring Island’s median age of 53.2 is high compared to the rest of B.C. (41.9 median age), not everyone on Salt Spring is a senior. In fact, between the 2006 and 2011 census of Canada, the number of Salt Spring residents aged 25 to 29 rose by 11.8 per cent from 295 to 330, and the number of people aged 35 to 39 also grew substantially — 21 per cent — from 420 to 510. As well, the number of children aged four and under grew from 300 in 2006 to 375 in 2011, a 25 per cent increase, compared to only 11 per cent across Canada in that same time period.
