‘We love you... please come home’ Family issues plea to find missing woman

The family of an Abbotsford woman who has been missing for over a week issued an emotional appeal on Tuesday morning for the public’s help in trying to locate her.

The mom, dad, brother and sister-in-law of

Crystal Ratvay, 33, held a press conference outside the Abbotsford Police Department, saying they were desperate to find her.

“Crystal, if you’re watching this, we love you, we miss you, and please come home,” said Adam Ratvay, Crystal’s brother, to the TV cameras.

The family held photos of Crystal and her 1997 green Plymouth Neon, with licence plate

“We certainly believe that if we can locate that vehicle, we can locate Crystal,” said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald.

Magnuson Ford celebrates re-grand opening after massive renovations The blue ribbon was cut, and so the re-grand opening of Magnuson Ford in Abbotsford was made official.

The Magnuson family has been in the car business for five decades, so when Magnuson Ford was established in Abbotsford in 2009, they knew what it would take to succeed. With ownership of both Magnuson Ford and Metro Ford Sales in Port Coquitlam, the family has the largest access to Ford inventory in the entire lower mainland.

The Abbotsford dealership recently underwent massive renovations, and re-opened with an afternoon of celebration, including a visit from Mayor Bruce Banman and players from the Vancouver Canucks.

Despite the late start to the school year, university admissions officers in British Columbia say the strike hasn’t caused them to change any plans and applying students shouldn’t be worried.

“We have the ability to work with students and make it all come together and we will do everything in our ability to do what we can,” said University of the Fraser Valley secretary and registrar Al Wiseman. “We’ll just roll with it.”

Wiseman and other admissions officers contacted by The News on Monday, before a tentative agreement had been reached, noted that most admission decisions revolve around an interim application deadline that occurs in the spring and usually combines Grade 11 and 12 marks.

A student is usually admitted or confirmed on a conditional basis, provided that final grades from classes ending in June are in keeping with the rest

of the student’s admissions package, explained UBC undergraduates admissions officer Andrew Arida.

“Our message to student is that there’s no need to be worried,” he said. “As long as students have some or all of their Grade 12 grades by March, then it’s business as usual for us.”

Arida said there’s no reason to believe that won’t happen.

Simon Fraser University admissions director Louise Legris had much the same message.

“Right now, it’s too early in the school year for grades to be affected,” she said.

Students planning on applying to outof-province institutions may find admissions officers understanding of their plight.

University of Alberta registrar Lisa Collins said the admission process revolves around the interim application deadline of May 1, at which point admission officers decide whether to offer students a spot based on their Grade 11 and Grade 12 marks.

Collins said the university – which offered places to 1,150 students from B.C. for Fall of 2014 – is considering changing the weight placed on Grade 11 grades.

She noted that it is rare for marks to change significantly between the final two years of high school.

“What we’re aiming for is student success,” she said. “Every strike is different and every province is different.”

At UFV, Wiseman says the flexible approach taken by registrars outside of the province would be mirrored here in the event of a strike elsewhere.

“We’d be working with students to say we’re expecting you to be able to come,” he said. “We can make something work, no matter what the specifics are.”

And he thinks government and the teachers will be able to ensure graduating students are in a position to enrol in university next fall.

“I think there’s going to be huge pressure on both sides to make sure they figure that out,” he said.

Numerous tips about possible sightings have come in since police first issued a press release on Saturday about her disappearance, but MacDonald said none of those has led to the missing woman.

Crystal was in the news in 2011 as one of the victims of the Stanley Cup Riot, when rioters flipped her car – a 1990 Chevy Cavalier – onto its roof and destroyed it.

She had just received the car that day from her aunt, and friends organized a fundraising campaign to help her replace it. The media attention resulted in Ratvay

Crystal Ratvay has been missing for more than a week. receiving a 2003 Cavalier to replace her damaged one.

At the time, Crystal described that she had been suffering from post-traumatic migraine disorder since 2005, when the car in which she was a passenger smashed into a power pole.

The pain became so debilitating that she dropped out of college, lost her job at a bank, and moved back home with her parents.

Crystal detailed her ongoing health is-

sues in emails to an Abbotsford News reporter last summer, explaining that she had had two more accidents since the 2011 reports.

In one, she fell backwards down some stairs, landing on her hip. In the second, in January 2013, she was driving the vehicle she had been given following the riots and crashed into a truck stopped on the freeway.

The collision happened just a month after Crystal had begun a new job with the Abbotsford school district.

At the time of her emails, Crystal was battling with the government over her disability benefits being withheld and what she considered unfair treatment from the Ministry of Social Development.

A letter that she wrote, but had not yet finished or sent, to the ministry detailed her frustrations with a system which she said made her feel hopeless and the stress that it had caused her and others like her.

“I would like to be taken seriously, as I am not a drug addict, but a very educated, hard-working, independent woman whose life has fallen apart due to some really unfortunate events …,” the letter stated.

Dear Diane, A great meal solution may be to try wok cooking.

It is very fast because of the high heat used and if using a large enough size, dinners can mostly be a one pan meal chocked full of nutritious vegetables.

Take a cooking class or watch on-line videos if you are unfamiliar with all the applications of using a wok in the kitchen and also to learn some great nutritious recipes.

Wok cooking is obviously very popular for Asian dishes, but it can also be used for a wide variety of recipes. One may wonder what makes a wok different from an ordinary pan, and how do I choose the best one?

Just like standard pots and pans, there are just as many different woks on the market to choose from. The recognizable shape of the wok is known worldwide, and this unique shape serves an important purpose. The inner cooking surface, mainly up the sides, should not be smooth. Having rough and/or a slightly uneven surface helps to hold cooked food while the sauce is finished, or other ingredients are being cooked, in the center of the pan.

Classic original woks are made out of carbon steel and hammered out by hand, and the residual indentations serve as the perfect surface to assist in doing this.

The round bottoms of the wok also aid in deep frying because it takes less oil to create a deep environment than a regular pot or pan. If you have an electric stove, you may choose to purchase a flat-bottomed wok, but even better would be to purchase a metal wok ring that sits over your electric burner and cradles a round bottom.

Unless you’re always cooking for just one or two people, you will get more value out of a larger wok than a smaller one, so buy one slightly larger than you may first think. A larger wok will help to keep the food contained more easily and can be used for both small dinners as well as large.

The other thing to consider, before making your purchase however, would be to ensure that you have ample storage for your new wok. Overhead pot racks are especially handy for this predicament.

I don’t find that non-stick or electric woks are the best option. Non stick coatings are almost always smooth, there are health concerns about emitting gases from non-stick

For traditional high heat wok cooking, one needs to be aware that many pots and pans on the market will also warp over high heat. Make sure you read the manufacturers use recommendations before purchasing to be certain. This being said, one should take care to never submerse any hot pan into water for the same reason.

Although it may be difficult to find one that is hammered out by hand, I do recommend buying a carbon steel wok and seasoning it to create a natural non-stick surface over time. They may not be as pretty to look at, but usually are of the least expensive options. They heat up very well, and will last you a lifetime if taken care of properly. Always hand wash only (no scouring pads as they will remove the seasoned surface) and dry thoroughly to prevent rusting.

The downside of a thin carbon steel wok is that they also lose their heat very quickly as well. If you insist on buying a non-stick wok, there are cast aluminum options that are non-stick and designed to resist warping.

Accessories that you may consider purchasing for your wok would be a lid, curved bottom utensils, bamboo steamers, hand held wire strainer, and a bamboo scrubber for cleaning. To season your new carbon steel wok, wash with soap and a scrub brush, dry thoroughly, and place the wok over high heat. When it is very hot and the steel has changed colour, turn the heat to medium-low, add a tablespoon of oil, and use a compacted paper towel held with tongs to coat the entire cooking surface with the oil. Let it sit on the medium low heat for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Allow the wok to cool and repeat as many as three times. This “seasoning” process is only meant for carbon steel woks, not stainless steel or other types of woks.

Pickup truck crashes into train

Two teenage girls who were reported missing Monday night on Sumas Mountain were located by search and rescue crews at 11:20 p.m.

The two 15-year-old hikers, Natalie West and Paige Nagata, had been dropped off at a gate to Sumas Mountain Inter-Regional Park at about 5:30 p.m. and were supposed to returned to the same location for pick-up at 7 p.m.

Neither were dressed for the conditions nor brought supplies for the hike, according to police.

Abbotsford Police was called just after 8 p.m., and Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue was also dispatched to the scene.

City names new director of economic development Wendy Dupley will be joining the city of Abbotsford on Sept. 22 as the new director of economic development. “(Dupley) brings with her over 25 years’ experience in the public, private, and international sectors,” said city manager George Murray.

Dupley has international experience and served as the regional executive manager in the department of immigration and citizenship for the Australian government, in

Washington D.C., working throughout the Americas region.

Dupley has also held various management and leadership roles in the United Kingdom private sector, and previously held a position with the government of Alberta as the executive director of labour attraction for the ministry of employment and immigration.

She was recently nominated to the Economic Development Association of

Separation has its repercussions Mark

Other Hand Standing on Hadrian’s Wall some 30 years ago, I was in awe of efforts by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago to keep back the hordes of barbarians, now known primarily as Scots.

Hadrian’s Wall is about 75 miles long, stretching across northern England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. Its location is at the narrowest part of Great Britain, describing a country at this point no wider than a drive from Vancouver to Chilliwack.

While not actually the border between England and Scotland, the wall does at one point come within a kilometre of what is recognized as the official divisional line between the two.

On Thursday, Hadrian’s Wall may again become symbolic as the equivalent of an

international border if the Scots vote for independence and establishment of a nation state.

Buoyed by thoughts of vast riches flowing from existing oil supplies, though apparently on the decline, politicians promoting nationhood are proposing a Norway-like economy where even the poorest would be able to buy a bottle of Scotland’s most famous export – single malt Scotch.

However, much of the potential nation’s economic strength actually lies in investment and commercial institutions, which have declared their intention to exit the northern half of the British Isles should independence occur.

Which camp will sway the outcome of the vote on Thursday is anyone’s guess at this point.

Should Scotland succeed in becoming an independent country, it is still a place that would lure me back to its haunting highlands, its misty lakes, crumbling castles and redheaded girls with a sexy brogue.

I managed a day’s skiing, in a downpour, in the Highland resort of Aviemore, and petted

So too are the western provinces blessed with riches: oil, food production, ports and huge export markets to the south and west.

In the end, all might work. But in the interim, our economies would collapse, taxation would be volatile, and our social safety nets chaotic.

I recall being so concerned about the potential in 1995 for a “yes” vote for sovereignty in Quebec causing financial turmoil and ultimately Canada’s breakup, that I considered moving, though to where was never determined.

Fortunately, common sense prevailed, and with the narrowest of margins our nation survived the sovereignists.

Yet despite the decision to stay within Canada, there is still a strong undercurrent of separatism within Quebec waiting only for a stimulant – Scottish independence – to promote a resurgence.

Funny how a “No” has become “maybe later” while a “Yes” seems to be forever.

What is a concern with Scottish independence however, is that it may spur a resurgence of support in Quebec for its own nationhood.

Rectify the harm that’s been done

Re: Abbotsford Official Community Plan Amendment and Temporary Residential Use Permit Applications I am strongly opposed to the creation of a cabin or “Dignity village” for many reasons.

Six months ago, Abbotsford Council voted against rezoning to build a much-needed supportive housing program for homeless men through Abbotsford Community Services and BC Housing, both legitimate and reputable organizations.

Supportive housing is an evidence-based best practice approach to homelessness. A “dignity village” is not.

Abbotsford City refused to do what neighbouring communities successfully do with supportive housing, yet is considering being the pilot project for such an encampment.

The ADBA strongly opposed the supportive housing project that was ultimately quashed. A vocal member of the newly formed Abbotsford Dignitarian Society proposing to build and operate a dignity village is outgoing ADBA chair Paul MacLeod.

The ADBA has donated $10,000 and someone is offering up their unused land, far away from the downtown area.

This project seems to be more about furthering the interests of the ADBA than the homeless population. I suspect if the homeless population truly wanted to live off a remote section of the highway, they would have already made their way there.

There is too large a gap between Abbotsford council rejecting a supportive housing project and now considering a dignity village. The glaring disparity creates a strong impression that the current objective of the powerful supporting the project is not to adequately care for this vulnerable group of citizens, but to displace them to a location out of sight, out of mind.

If such an encampment is really the solution, it makes logical sense it be created in town, allowing residents direct access to social, health, and employment services. It is a real concern that the response time of emergency services would be extended. I believe we will create further harm by displacing already marginalized citizens to a location that is not visible, easily accessible and thereby unsafe.

The city has been vehemently opposed to all such encampments in the past, using eviction notices, court applications, police enforcement, and some questionable acts that garnered national negative media attention. There is no precedent for how a dignity village would be governed and operated under Canadian law. It is worth considering that any sanctioned encampment could snowball into another source of criticism and shame for our community.

A dignity village seems prone to become a jurisdictional and litigious mess.

I believe council grossly erred in rejecting supportive housing and would also err sanctioning this encampment. Another wrong decision now will not undo the damage of an earlier wrong decision.

Abbotsford should instead attempt to rectify the harm that has been done. Council could grant the rezoning and explore with Abbotsford Community Services and BC Housing how we can recover the millions of dollars of capital and operational funding that has been lost from our community.

I am a property owner in Abbotsford and have been increasingly ashamed of such. My next home will not be in Abbotsford if the city acquiesces and proceeds with a dignity village, as these choices reflect poorly on every one of us. I refuse to live in a town where this is the best we can do.

First, he states that “In fact, it is not religion that drives those to commit terrorist acts or slaughter innocent people, but a quest for power and control of people’s lives.”

The evidence suggests to me that it is, in fact, a specific religion that motivates these terrorists. When they flew their hijacked planes into the World Trade Centre towers 13 years ago, they shouted “Allahu Akbar” and other Muslim slogans.

They were not trying to seize political power.

They were trying to promote Islam, embarrass the U.S. and, as Mark correctly asserts, instil fear. I would add, fear of Islam.

Second, Mark attributes guilt to religious “extremists,” those who hold to “the belief of religious supremacy”.

Peachey puts her name up for election

Former mayoral candidate will run for councillor seat Gerda Peachey, who has previously run for mayor in Abbotsford, will put her name forward in the race for council in the upcoming November election.

Peachey, a former banker and business owner, said Abbotsford needs to vote for individuals who will treat the public’s money with the care they would have with their own bank accounts.

Peachey said she thinks the current council has made some poor decisions and said local government should confine itself to issues that pertain to community needs.

“Our local taxes should be spent on roads, sewer, water, parks, police, skating rinks and pools for our families.”

She added that “municipal mayors and councils have no business dabbling in big business and big entertainment, for which they have no expertise.

“Our city council has lost PEACHY enormous amounts of hardearned tax dollars on vanity projects, while depleting the public purse of money that should be there for infrastructure needs, and buffer money for ‘rainy’ days.’”

She also said it is important for council to make bylaws that are sensible, achievable and enforceable.

Peachey says she has tried “largely in vain” to address what she calls the “uneven enforcement of our laws.”

Peachey and husband Richard have a daughter whose family still lives in Abbotsford. She says the greatest event of her life was “when I gave my life to Jesus Christ in 1969,” and enriches her time by volunteering at women’s prisons as well as playing music at Menno Home and Hospital.

Ken Wuschke aims for council seat

Ken Wuschke has announced his candidacy for council in the November civic election.

Wuschke, who moved to Abbotsford in 2010, has been active in community building in the city, and maintains the City of Abbotsford

Dan Bue has announced his plans to run for a council seat in the November election.

Bue, currently a counsellor, business consultant and part-time professor, is a former director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association.

He previously ran a business in downtown Abbotsford, providing therapeutic and rehab services to high-risk foster children, brain-injured persons, along with general rehab and senior care services. He sold the business in 2002.

Bue lists on his website that the number one issue today is helping the disadvantaged. He notes that in dealing with the homeless, the city must act now, BUE citing that many cities “have developed solutions that have worked well – without putting stress on the surrounding business or residential communities.”

He also states the city must be fiscally responsible and “should never be exceeding the rate of inflation in our tax increases.”

Bue writes that he believes strongly in environmental protection and started an online business called Green Earth Alternatives Inc., which he operated for eight years.

He added that Abbotsford is not doing an adequate job of encouraging people to leave their cars and use public transit. He wrote that with buses already poorly utilized, a study is needed to determine what needs to be done to get people on buses.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL The Abbotsford Centre has twice played host to the world renowned Cirque du Soleil! The Montreal-based company drew crowds of nearly 30,000 people when Dralion played in 2011 and Quidam in 2012.

Dralion opened on Thursday, June 2 and had an amazing seven show run featuring an astounding 1,500 costume pieces, including shoes, hats and accessories. The visual spectacle, whose title is the merging of the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the

Cirque du Soleil Quidam visited the Abbotsford Centre a year later, running August 29 through September 2. Quidam told the tale of a little girl who traveled to the imaginary world of Quidam to escape a boring reality. The spectacle featured a cast of 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and characters and received amazing reviews throughout the Fraser Valley.

Sentenced for two robberies Shaymon Webb receives more than three years

An Abbotsford man has received a jail sentence of three years

was sentenced Friday in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.

He previously pleaded guilty to four of the nine

and four months for robbing businesses in Abbotsford and Mission in 2012.

and includes a 10-year weapons ban.

on March 7, 2012 and Michael Hill Jeweller in Abbotsford’s Sevenoaks Shopping Centre on June 12 of that year.

He also pleaded guilty to using a fake gun and disguising his face in relation to the Abbotsford robbery.

Webb had also faced charges related to a robbery at Chances in Mission in July 2009, but those charges were stayed.

In all, he had been charged with three counts of robbery, three counts of using a fake gun, and three counts of using a mask/disguise during an offence.

In the 2012 robbery at Chances, Webb was accused of wielding a shotgun and demanding cash. He then fled in a 1987 Pontiac 6000 that had allegedly been stolen from Abbotsford.

During the incident in Sevenoaks Shopping Centre, he carried a fake gun, walked into the jewelry store, used a rock to smash a display

case and stole several items. He had pulled his shirt up to conceal his face.

Webb then ran off and drove away in an older model black sedan.

Police found discarded clothing and a replica handgun in the area.

On Dec. 7, 2012, police issued a public notice, asking for help in trying to locate Webb, who was a suspect in the prior robberies and was wanted for another incident – a break-in at a restaurant in the 33660 block of South Fraser Way on Nov. 24, 2012.

In that incident, Webb smashed the locked glass front door of the restaurant, jumped the counter and took some food.

He was arrested Dec. 8, 2012, charged with breaking into the restaurant and released on bail. He pleaded guilty to that crime in February 2013 and was sentenced to 17 days in jail.

The community of Mt. Lehman in Abbosford hosts its 20th annual fall fair on Saturday, Sept. 20.

This year the theme is “Community History,� honouring three anniversaries – 130 years for the school, 120 for the church and 110 for the community hall.

The fair takes place at the Mt. Lehman elementary and the community hall located at Mt. Lehman and Taylor roads. Admission is free.

The event begins at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at the hall, followed at 9:30 by the start of the fair.

A pet parade takes place at 10 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 10:30.

Activities include games, a silent auction, a live auction, a craft fair, a produce display, a Mt. Lehman community history display, children’s games, Games2U mobile entertainment, on-stage entertainment and lots of food choices, including a chicken dinner at the hall from 3 to 7 p.m.

Throughout the day, there will be a variety of dancers and musicians on stage.

The Fraser Valley Community Winds start the on-stage entertainment at 11 a.m., and the Prairie Dance Club Band ends the day at 4 p.m.

Tickets will be sold for raffles, gift baskets, games/rides and “Bessie bingo.�

The cost of the chicken dinner/family social is $12 for an adult-sized large plate and $8 for a half-sized child’s serving.

Lego raises Canuck Place funds Creative Challenge held at Sevenoaks The fourth annual Creative Lego Challenge was held over the weekend at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre, raising about $10,000 for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice (CPCH).

The event saw businesses from around the Fraser Valley showcase their creativity and philanthropic spirit by building Lego sculptures and donating to CPCH. Corporate Lego creations were judged by Sevenoaks shoppers and celebrity judges including Mayor Bruce Banman, Coun. Les Barkman, Country 107 FM morning show host Chris Coburn, and Lego-certified professional Robin Sather.

All proceeds from the Creative Challenge will support Canuck Place’s Dave Lede House in Abbotsford.

New to this year’s event was the addition of a Kids Build competition – an event where kids could drop

The Abbotsford Pilots made sure their fans got their money’s worth during the first week of the Pacific Junior Hockey League regular season.

Both of the Pilots’ games last week went to overtime, with a 50/50 split in terms of results.

On Wednesday, the Pilots opened on the road vs. the defending PJHL champion Aldergrove Kodiaks, and despite being outshot 53-36, managed to steal a 3-2 OT victory.

Goalie Jacob Crawford was instrumental – his 51 saves earned

him first star honours – and Devon Becker scored the winner in the extra session. Captain Brady Lawlor and Devan Vander Wyk added regulation-time tallies for Abbotsford.

On Friday, the Pilots hosted their home opener vs. the Delta Ice Hawks, and despite a better team-wide effort, sustained a 2-1 OT loss. Crawford was once again outstanding, making 36 saves, and Mark Ledlin notched a power-play goal in the second period for the hosts. But Delta’s Brent Chreptyk scored his second goal of the game with the man advantage at

the 1:14 mark of OT. “I thought it was to be expected,” Abby head coach Jim Cowden said, analyzing his team’s openingweek play. “We didn’t play overly great, because we hadn’t practiced together as a team before either of those first two games.”

Indeed, the Pilots made their last roster cuts on Tuesday evening, just prior to their regularseason opener.

The roster is still a work in progress – they’ve got just one goalie at this point, and didn’t dress a backup for either game last week.

The good news is, that goalie is

Crawford, and he’s been terrific thus far.

“He was just thrown into the fire,” Cowden said of Crawford, adding that he’s hopeful he’ll be able to land a second keeper at some point this week. “I had no idea he would be this good, but he’s been outstanding. He’s a nice kid, a focused kid, and he works extremely hard in practice.”

Approximately 200 runners and walkers took part in this year’s Terry Fox Run, which began at Tradex at the Abbotsford Airport on Sunday morning. Participants chose from routes of two, five and 10 kilometres to raise funds for cancer research. Abbotsford was one of numerous communities taking part in the 34th annual run. The event returned to Abbotsford after not taking place in 2013 due to the lack of an organizer. Local residents Grant Mottershead and Barbara Bremner volunteered to take over this year.

Beard shave raises cancer funds APD employee collects more than $6,000

An employee of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) recently raised more than $6,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation by shaving off the beard that he had spent years growing.

Phil Friesen, a dispatcher in the APD’s communications operations centre, raised the funds on behalf of his 24-year-old daughter Amy, who was informed earlier this year that she had a large mass on her adrenal gland.

On April 15, surgeons removed a 10 kg tumour, as well as her adrenal gland, gall bladder, appen-

dix and part of her liver.

Amy was diagnosed with a rare cancer called adrenocortical carcinoma.

Half of the funds raised by Friesen will go toward a study on rare types of tumours, and the other half will go to the B.C. Cancer Agency’s cancer centre in Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

Fiddlin’ Frenzy is the next concert in the Envision Financial Coffee House Concert Series.

The performance is on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Clayburn Gourmet Gallery (#320 3033 Immel St.).

Fiddlin’ Frenzy is a pair of B.C. sibling phenoms, Kai and Lia Gronberg, who have taken the western competitive fiddle scene and talent shows

by storm.

They began performing at the age of five and have composed pieces since the young age of seven.

Kai and Lia won the Optimist Club talent show and placed first in various categories at the B.C. Provincial and Grand North American fiddle contests, John Arcand Fiddle Fest, Kiwanis and Chilliwack Lions Club Music Festival, and many other competitions.

They were one of the distinguished music groups representing Canada to entertain Olympic audiences and are number one on the ReverbNation Celtic charts for Abbotsford.

They were also invited by TedxKids to do a speech at Telus World of Science to inspire other children.

This fiddling duo performs Celtic, Metis, French Canadian and traditional music at many events, such as

Celticfest Vancouver, Northwest Folklife, and the 2010 Olympic games, and were featured in the Olympic entertainment commercial.

Approximately 200 runners and walkers took part in this year’s Terry Fox Run, which began at Tradex at the Abbotsford Airport on Sunday morning. Participants chose from routes of two, five and 10 kilometres to raise funds for cancer research. Abbotsford was one of numerous communities taking part in the 34th annual run. The event returned to Abbotsford after not taking place in 2013 due to the lack of an organizer. Local residents Grant Mottershead and Barbara Bremner volunteered to take over this year.

Pilots work overtime Junior B hockey club splits first games of regular season

The Abbotsford Pilots made sure their fans got their money’s worth during the first week of the Pacific Junior Hockey League regular season.

Both of the Pilots’ games last week went to overtime, with a 50/50 split in terms of results.

On Wednesday, the Pilots opened on the road vs. the defending PJHL champion Aldergrove Kodiaks, and despite being outshot 53-36, managed to steal a 3-2 OT victory.

Goalie Jacob Crawford was instrumental – his 51 saves earned

him first star honours – and Devon Becker scored the winner in the extra session. Captain Brady Lawlor and Devan Vander Wyk added regulation-time tallies for Abbotsford.

On Friday, the Pilots hosted their home opener vs. the Delta Ice Hawks, and despite a better team-wide effort, sustained a 2-1 OT loss. Crawford was once again outstanding, making 36 saves, and Mark Ledlin notched a power-play goal in the second period for the hosts. But Delta’s Brent Chreptyk scored his second goal of the game with the man advantage at

the 1:14 mark of OT. “I thought it was to be expected,” Abby head coach Jim Cowden said, analyzing his team’s openingweek play. “We didn’t play overly great, because we hadn’t practiced together as a team before either of those first two games.”

Indeed, the Pilots made their last roster cuts on Tuesday evening, just prior to their regularseason opener.

The roster is still a work in progress – they’ve got just one goalie at this point, and didn’t dress a backup for either game last week.

The good news is, that goalie is

Crawford, and he’s been terrific thus far.

“He was just thrown into the fire,” Cowden said of Crawford, adding that he’s hopeful he’ll be able to land a second keeper at some point this week. “I had no idea he would be this good, but he’s been outstanding. He’s a nice kid, a focused kid, and he works extremely hard in practice.”

Hadwin stays hot on Web.com Tour Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

Adam Hadwin authored another strong result on the Web. com Tour, tying for 10th at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in Columbus, Ohio.

The 26-year-old Abbotsford golfer, coming off a victory at last week’s Chiquita Classic, turned in a steady performance at the Ohio State University Golf Club’s Scarlet Course. He carded rounds of 71-72-70-70 to end up at one under par for the tournament, five strokes back of Justin Thomas of the U.S., who won in a playoff.

Hadwin earned $26,000 for his finish, which brought his total Web.com earnings to $499,667 and his take through the first three events of the playoffs to $206,000. He’s second on the combined money list, just over $15,000 behind Carlos Ortiz, and first on the playoff list.

Finishing first on either list would earn him fully exempt status on the PGA Tour for 201415 and an invitation to the 2015 Players Championship.

The final playoff event, the Web.com Tour Championship, runs this week at TPC Sawgrass at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Fellow Abbotsford golfer Nick Taylor missed the cut at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in heartbreaking fashion. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Soak the caul fat in water, just to cover; add vinegar and soak 15 minutes until pliable, rinse in cold water, dry and lay it flat on a work surface.

Meanwhile mix the pork, beef, onion, fruit, nuts and herbs. Soak the bread crumbs in milk, then add to the meat mixture. Season with salt, pepper, spices and eggs. Roll the mixture up in the caul fat, press into terrine mold or alternatively place in an oven proof dish.

Pour the wine over top. Cook 1-1/2 hours in the oven. Cool before serving. This can keep in the fridge for 48 hours.

Impressive victories by the Abbotsford Senior Panthers and the Robert Bateman Timberwolves – on the road, no less – highlighted the local action in Week 2 of the B.C. high school football season.

The AA No. 4-ranked Panthers traveled to the Okanagan to take on a AAA squad, the Kelowna Owls, and emerged with a 23-20 victory.

The T-Wolves, meanwhile, got a stellar performance from their defence in a 6-0 triumph over the Argyle Pipers in North Vancouver.

“It was our first game in a long time,” noted Abby Senior coach Jay Fujimura, whose team had its Week 1 game vs. Holy Cross cancelled and didn’t participate in spring football due to teacher job action.

“They (Kelowna) are a very good team, and we were excited about our play. . . . It was a good all-around effort on offence and defence.”

The Panthers got a tremendous performance from Chase Claypool – the Grade 11 standout accounted for all three of the Panthers’ touchdowns, catching

Argyle player ended up being OK. “Our defence played pretty well,” MacDonald said. “They got inside our 10-yard line three times, but the defence was able to hold them, and knock them backwards.”

Zacher had a big game for the T-Wolves, rushing 10 times for 132 yards.

In other action, the AAA No. 5-ranked W.J. Mouat Hawks were upset 30-14 on the road by the New Westminster Hyacks, and the Rick Hansen Hurricanes were blanked 30-0 at the Holy Cross Crusaders.

Slater McRae led the way for the Hawks – he returned a punt 90 yards for a TD and hauled in four receptions for 59 yards, and added a team-high 13 tackles and a fumble recovery on defence.

The other Mouat major came on a seven-yard scoring pass from Noah Falconer to Jordan Duley.

As for the Hurricanes, head coach Rob Hallam noted his squad was shorthanded due to absences and injuries.

“It would have been a different game if we’d had everyone we were supposed to have,” he said.

“We didn’t have a running game, and that really hurt us.”

GVHBA to hold Fall Home Renovation Show next month

West Coast luxury by Teragon Developments A two-and-a-half-year renovation updated the home from 1928 with technology and features that would have never been imaginable when the house was originally built.

By Kerry Vital Vancouver’s Shaughnessy neighbourhood is full of heritage-style homes nestled in lush greenery. Many of the homes take their inspiration from the history of the area, and one of Teragon Developments and Construction’s recent renovations is no exception. The home, which blends Tudor architecture with Art Deco, also offers modern amenities that no one would have imagined when the original home was built in 1928.

“This was an intense renovation,” says Lars Van Linge, president of Teragon Developments, adding that it took place over two and a half years, and includes an entirely new foundation for the home to allow for an increase in ceiling height and usable space.

The original home was the same size as the finished product (approximately 10,000 square feet), but was old and out of date. The family of four brought in Van Linge and his team to build a home that can truly be considered a luxury estate. Now known as The Mayfair, the home is seriously stunning. The curb appeal is incredible, with leaded windows, wood beams, brickwork and a travertine and natural stone walkway. Tudor arches are featured throughout,

including on the ceilings, fireplaces, doors and room entrances.

“The homeowner generally left it to the designers and us,” Van Linge says. Teragon worked with architect Stefan Weidemann to design the four-level home, which also features a three-car garage, botanical garden, a pool-side cabana and a private putting green, among other amenities. A wood-fired pizza oven is just one feature of the outdoor kitchen.

Inside, the home is one of the most technologically advanced in North America. In fact, it won an award for Best Overall Integrated Home from the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA).

“This home has everything,” says Van Linge. “It can be controlled anywhere in the world.”

Integrated audio and visual systems are throughout, including outdoors. The lighting for inside and outside the house is so state-of-the-art that it required its own architect.

“We installed very advanced lighting for the owner’s art collection,” Van Linge says. “His collection is worth about $4 million; he has original works by Emily Carr, for example.”

To protect the artwork, the home has a built-in humidification system that will keep everything at the optimal temperature, along with multi-zone climate control.

You enter through the formal entry on the main level, with its formal living room, study, formal dining room, kitchen and casual dining room and living room. There you have access to the outdoor dining terrace and covered lounge.

The top level has another bedroom, as well as a sitting room, library, play room and laundry room.

Teragon also expanded the basement of the home, from half crawl space and half basement to a basement with 10-foot ceilings throughout. That basement now holds a games room, home theatre, wine cellar and gym, making the home an entertainer’s paradise.

The home has plenty of heritage-style touches, such as walnut panelling and flooring laid in a herringbone pattern.

The bronzed railing on the sweeping staircase was inspired by an art noveau railing from Brussels, Belgium, and was handforged. Custom millwork, five fireplaces, custom stained glass and natural stone elements are just a few of the other luxurious aspects of The Mayfair.

Van Linge himself is a journeyman carpenter, noting that he enjoys bringing those old-fashioned elements to his work.

“Something that sets us apart is our eye for detail,” he says.

“You can’t execute these kinds of ideas without being able to see the (small) details.”

The renovations were completed last year and the owner has since sold the home, but Van Linge and his team are still involved with the new owners, assisting them with the operations of the house.

“We’re still working with them to maintain and service the exterior paint and the HVAC system, for example,” says Van Linge.

Make your renovation wish list affordable with rebates It was Saturday morning, and my husband and I were ready to tackle various home renovation projects.

We walked around our charming, 1903 Vancouver home and wrote down all of the areas that needed work. We decided on practical upgrades that would make the home healthier and more comfortable to live in including insulation in our attic and those upgrades that would create a more modern, aesthetically pleasing, and user-friendly home such as a new fireplace.

Next, we finalized our list of home upgrades that we wanted to complete. Unfortunately, we encountered a rather large hiccup – we had a tight budget of $X, and a wish list total of $X x 10.

Does this scenario sound familiar?

Deciding on what upgrades are the priority is often one of the most difficult decisions to make when

starting home renovations, especially when there is a budget to work within.

A recommended strategy was to first focus on the areas that would make our home healthier and more comfortable to live in, such as draftproofing and ventilation. These upgrades could also make the home more energy efficient, and save us a considerable amount of money year after year in home energy expenses. For example, heating accounts for approximately 50 per cent of an average household’s energy consumption. Therefore, any upgrades to our home’s insulation and building envelope could reduce our heating bills. As well, an ENERGY STAR® bathroom fan not only helps to maintain proper humidity and air quality, but also uses less than half the energy of a regular fan.

gas furnaces use about 60 to 90 per cent less energy by turning down the heat when not needed. Overall, a home that has an EnerGuide rating of 80 or higher, which indicates that it is an energy efficient Power Smart home, uses up to 30 per cent less energy than an average home on the market.

The family of Marilyn Ann Arthur, age 66, are sad to announce her death, on September 10, 2014, in Chilliwack, BC. She was predeceased by her parents Melvin and Mae Grottenberg. Marilyn is survived by the loves of her life, her husband Paddy, son Devin, daughter-in-law Nova, brother Bert (Darlene) Grottenberg and sister Ila (Perry) Dagsvik as well as numerous other family.

Marilyn was born in Port Arthur, attended Hillcrest High School and received a Masters degree in Education with a Gerontology Specialty from Lakehead University. Her career path included teaching for the Lakehead Board of Education and Confederation College. She also worked at Port Arthur General Hospital, Bethammi Seniors’ Housing and Lakehead University. Thunder Bay summers were spent at “camp”, where her family and friends would gather.

In 2001, Marilyn and her family moved to the Fraser Valley to pursue a career in health administration with the Fraser Health Authority. She enjoyed every opportunity to learn and grow. She made many wonderful friends along the way.

Marilyn was an avid golfer and has many fond memories of sharing stories with friends while on the golf course.

Special thanks to Fraser Health Home Support, Chilliwack Home Health and Cascade Hospice.

A heartfelt thank you to her friends and family for their loving support.

Mr. Edward (Ted) Keniston late of Abbotsford, BC, passed away on September 10, 2014 at the age of 84 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary; daughters, Diane (Richard), Sherrie (Daniel); 2 grandchildren, Sarah and Christopher; and 4 great-grandchildren, Autumn, Journey, Dawson and Olivia.

As a young man of 19 years old, a trip to the Calgary airport sealed Ted’s career choice that spanned 35 years as a commercial pilot. These years included crop-dusting in Alberta, flying float aircraft on the north and west coasts of British Columbia, a bush pilot in the Northwest Territories, forest fire patrol and air ambulance in the Kootenays of British Columbia. Upon retiring, Ted and Mary settled in Abbotsford and enjoyed a life of family, friends and travel.

Ted’s hobby in retirement was tinkering in his workshop and his grandson as a young child made the observation that “Papa could likely build a jet airplane in his shop”. The family would like to thank the staff of the Palliative Care Unit of the Abbotsford Regional Hospital as well as the home care staff for their wonderful care of Ted. Also, a heartfelt thank you goes to the many friends for their caring support.
