The United Way Park on Us campaign still has room to join Submitted
Twelve years ago resourceful United Way staff began our Park on Us Campaign. The goal was to connect with businesses and community in a fun, win-win way. The Campaign has grown from that first year with 95 parking meters sold to; 2013 with 432 sold meters to this year with meter sales as of September 10th at 500 – a record setting year. This year in response to a number of business requests to have logos on the meter signs over the years, Wolfpack Signs & Printing has designed a 12 by 16 inch sign accommodating the business name and logo. These new signs will hang on one
meter pole signifying sales of 10, 20, 30 and 40 parking meters. This will free up meters for increased sales, a good thing! If your business has been missed and you want in, contact the office to reserve your parking meters. Many generous businesses have also donated items for the ever popular Silent Auction. This is the second year for the Park on Us auction with items ranging from gift certificates, barbeque supplies, granite lazy-Susan, camping supplies and so much more over 100 items totalling almost $6,000. Mark Friday, September 19th on your calendar and plan to come down and join in the fun. The M&M
Barbeque and Silent Auction will be at the United Way office location – 930 Baker Street starting at 11 a.m. The morning starts at 7:30 a.m. with coffee and morning snack by donation. Unise our “piggy bank” will be standing by collecting donations. Office contact information: UNITED WAY OF CRANBROOK AND KIMBERLEY 930 Baker Street, Cranbrook, BC Tel: 250-426-8833 or Email: crankimbunitedway@shaw.ca Visit the United Way website at www. ourunitedway.ca. The United Way Park on Us campaign is underway. Stop by the United Way office on September 19 at 11 a.m. for a barbecue and silent auction and consider leaving a donation for this good cause.

A small business started by Sherin and Stu Laurie on a kitchen table in Skookumchuck has become an unqualified success. Pets Go Raw produces food for pets made from government inspected meats, vegetables and fruits. The business started with chicken and beef but now also uses turkey, salmon, bison, lamb rabbit and pork and prides iself on adding no fillers, additives or preservatives. The plant now employs up to 20 local people. Recently, Mayor Wayne Stetski and Councillor Sharon Cross toured the Pets Go Raw plant, spoke with the workers and looked at the machinery. Currently the business supplies the city, the province, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Winnipeg and is exploring growing into Ontario in the near future. a couple months” said Wildsight and CFAC’s Shannon Duncan. The one and a half hour workshops will give details on row cover options, including frames and materials, cold frames, repurposed cloches, mulching, and ways to combine multiple layers of protection for maximum effect. Plant varieties that do
well in local late-season conditions and timing for late season harvests will be covered, along with some tips for planning a long-season garden for next year. “With the right varieties and timing you can harvest fresh veggies even when there is snow on the ground and the temperatures are below zero” said Duncan. “As
usual, wisdom from local experts will be shared throughout the workshops.” The workshops will also cover seeds: how to save tomatoes and other seeds for next year from this year’s plants, which ones you can eat from your garden, and how to plant them this fall for a jump start next spring. As always, the Edible
Gardening workshops are hands-on in the garden, so participants will get practice building a variety of cold frames, constructing a row cover tunnel and fermenting tomatoes to save their seeds. The workshops run from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16th in Kimberley at Wildsight’s Open Gate
Garden on Rotary Drive and in Cranbrook on Wednesday, September 17th from 6:30-8 p.m. at CFAC’s Public Produce Garden on 18th Avenue North between 6th and 8th Streets. The workshop cost is $10 with a work trade option available and registration is online at Wildsight.ca/ Garden or by calling 250-427-7981.

The Brain-Gut Connection
Have you ever noticed that many common sayings in the english language refer to the digestive system as being part of human consciousness? Sayings like "gut instinct", "trust your gut", "gut check" or "sick with worry" all refer to our bowels having feelings and awareness. These terms have become part of our language because the human digestive system and brain are intimately linked together. In medicine we refer to the digestive system as the second brain due to the extent of these connections. The brain and spinal cord are directly wired together making the digestive system what we might call a sixth sense. In a healthy state, the gut-brain connection can help us connect to wisdom, feelings and awareness that we might not otherwise have. When out of balance, however, this connection can wreak havoc on our health. Just in the last 4 months I have seen 4 people who have come to me with severe digestive symptoms including chronic diarrhea, cramping, bloating and pain. The first course of treatment in each case was to identify and remove
the foods to which they were intolerant, a step that normally helps significantly. In each case, however, this step made no difference at all and their symptoms persisted. In each of these 4 cases, the person was either aware of being stressed and worried or I had the sense (perhaps a gut instinct) that they were anxious. For some people chronic worry, stress and anxiety expresses itself through the brain-gut connection very strongly. The typical medical diagnosis for these people is Irritable Bowel Syndrome. As the next stage of treatement I gave these patients a natural formulation that helps promote the manufacture of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps balance mood, apatite and digestion. Where the dietary change made no difference, increasing serotonin completely eliminated the patient's digestive symptoms. If you have digestive symptoms regardless of what you eat you might consider the possibility that stress, worry or anxiety are the cause and that stress management and supporting serotonin manufacture might be the cure.

The Jaffray Volunteer Fire Fighters will again be hosting an Open House at the Fire Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a great opportunity to learn about their services and check out our Fire Hall. Thank you again to the various individuals throughout the community that continue to keep our homes and properties safe from fire. You are appreciated. Don’t miss the 4-H kids Games & Bouncy House as this was a very popular area for youngsters. Our Jaffray General Store is celebrating its 105th anniversary and everyone is welcome to stop by for cake and coffee. Check out the new renovations and wares. The Fall Fair parade begins at 11:30 a.m. with various businesses and organizations. The parade has grown over the years. After the parade the grounds are open and see Fair page 11

there is something for everyone. Kids can be found at the Giant Sandbox and Bouncy House or buying treats from Mr. Carons’ Cotton Candy. We have tattoos, concession, crib tournament, kids bike races, games and much more. Look for the Firewood Raffle. There is a full logging truck full of larch firewood to win. This is an annual event and tickets go fast and are available after the parade. The library will be having a ‘Used book Sale’ with a variety of books. All proceeds from the sale go towards purchasing new books for the library. Library night is Mondays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thank you to all our volunteers. The evening is followed by the Steak Dinner and Dance at the Jaffray Hall. Live music this year by the group Steel Wheels. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased during the day at the Information booth. No minors at the dance after 9 p.m. Sunday boasts our popular BINGO at the hall starting at 1 p.m. and running to 4 p.m. Doors open at 12:30. Everyone is welcome. Jaffray Fall Fair always ends with our 22nd Duck Race on Sand Creek. Dicks are available at the Jaffray Sports and Hardware or look for our ‘duck’ roaming the fair grounds. A huge thank you goes out to the volunteers and businesses that continually come for-
ward to make this event sucessful. Your talents
and hard work are much appreciated.

Sunrise Rotary Film It is that time again – Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Film Series is about to start. Out of the gate, we have a fantastic film, Boyhood. Filmed over 12 years with the same cast,
Richard Linklater’s Boyhood is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane),

who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film
has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay’s Yellow to Arcade Fire’s Deep

A life lived is worth remembering. Victoria (Vickie) Mary Pretty April 14, 1913 ~ August 29, 2014
Victoria (Vickie) Mary Pretty, a longtime resident of Creston, passed away peacefully with family by her side on August 29, 2014 in Cranbrook, BC at the age of 101 years.
Vickie was born to parents Kate and John Placsko in St. Brieux, Saskatchewan on April 14, 1913. She earned her Grade 11 Diploma there.
Vickie spent many hours crocheting literally hundreds of beautiful doilies, giving them away to family and friends; some went as far as Russia and Scotland.
