STRAY CAT STRUT: The RCMP, Kootenay Ice and College of the Rockies Avalanche volleyball players hit the catwalk at the annual Cops for Kids all-male fashion show on Wednesday night at the Tamarack Centre. Complete with three acts, the RCMP, Ice and Avalanche all got the chance to walk the walk as they played to the crowd in an effort to upstage each other. The Cops for Kids charity is currently in the middle of their cycling tour, which started in Osoyoos and winds through the East and West Kootenay before returning to Kelowna. See page 3 for more, and Page 2 for a special photo feature.

Society formed to bring SD5 board calls for panel back Cranbrook Airshow on binding arbitration BA RRY COULTER

A new not-for-profit society has been set up to help bring an airshow back to the Canadian Rockies International Airport on a regular basis. Darrell Garton of Calgary, who has worked on airshows in B.C. and Alberta, is working to implement a biennial event, that would take place every two years starting in 2016. “What we’re trying to do is bringing the event back to Cranbrook,” Garton told the Townsman. “I have a couple of airshow people here in Calgary that have been in the airshow industry for several years. We’ve also been asked by some of the people in

Cranbrook to help bring it back. “Over the years, there’ve been one or two, then it stopped, then it came back, then it stopped — that kind of thing. “We’re looking at bringing this back on a two-year term, starting in 2016. “We’re proposing a two-day event, with a twilight show in the evening, with the planes doing the fireworks — that kind of thing. Abbotsford just ran their first twilight show this year, and it went over really well. So this is what we’ve been trying to plan for you guys. Fireworks over the mountains, that kind of thing. It should be pretty exciting.” A society has already been set

up — the Cranbrook International Airshow — which is being run as a not-for-profit. “So if the airshow makes money, all the funds go to pay the bills, with a little bit of reserve in the bank,” Garton said. “Any remaining funds go back to the city — so it will go towards the Air Cadets, the Boys and Girls Club, any of those groups who help out with the event will get some back. So the society doesn’t keep any funds, at the end of the day.” Cranbrook is in a good geographic location for an airshow, Garton said.

More than 30,000 B.C. teachers voted almost unanimously Wednesday to end their strike if the B.C. government will send their dispute to binding arbitration. The government, however, had already dismissed the province-wide vote, with Education Minister Peter Fassbender calling it a “ploy.” In School District 5, board chair Frank Lento said he was not surprised by the results of the vote by teachers. On Tuesday, the Board of Education approved sending a letter to Fassbender and the BCTF urging an arbitration panel. “Each side would chose a repre-

sentative and then each representative would chose a chairman,” explained Lento on Thursday. “Then it would be a panel for binding arbitration. “The difference would be each party would select an arbitrator and then each arbitrator would select a chairperson. It’s something that’s happened in the past, years ago there would be arbitration panels to resolve disputes. So we sent that along for their consideration urging them to get the matter resolved.” On August 5, Lento wrote the letter to Fassbender regarding the ongoing labour dispute.

The stuff is strutted at cops’ fashion fundraiser Tre vor Cr awley

It’s all in the strut. Members of the RCMP, Kootenay Ice and College of the Rockies Avalanche Volleyball squad all hit the runway for the annual Cops for Kids all-male fashion show in a Carnival-style party. From the risqué to the ridiculous, models hit the runway and played to the crowd, all in an effort to raise money for the Cops for Kids charity, which goes directly to local

children in medical, physical or traumatic crisis. “It’s an amazing event, it always is,” said Melody Munro, a director for Cops for Kids. “The Tamarack Centre, just every year, gets better and better. “…We super appreciate the support from the Kootenay Ice and the College of the Rockies Avalanche—they were amazing—and I think people generally had a really good time and a lot of money

was raised for a really good cause.” The goal, of course, is to always raise more than last year’s event, but final numbers won’t come in till next week. The Heidout catered the intermission snacks while guests could also peruse the silent auction section. The crowd got to see the direct results of where the funding goes, as a young kid who had received some sup-

port from the charity came up on stage. He had been in an ATV accident and had severely injured his ankle. Cops for Kids was able to step in and provide aa grant for a specialized orthotic while medical professionals work towards a more permanent solution. “As they’re rebuilding his ankle, he needs to have this orthotic in order to protect that area, so they had said he would likely not walk again…

but he came flying up on stage and has just improved dramatically with us being able to purchase this equipment for him, and it’s not covered by the medical system,” said Munro. Last year, the charity received 135 grant applications all year. In the summer months of 2014, there have been over 140. “So we definitely need to see some more fundraising and more money coming

into the charity in order to support these grants that are coming in,” Munro said. “It shows a lot more families are in need.” Cops for Kids is currently in the middle of their cycling tour, as they started in Osoyoos on Sept. 6 and have been winding their way through the lower West and East Kootenay region before heading up to Golden and the Rogers Pass before ending in Kelowna on Sept. 15.

School board calls for arbitration panel Continued from page 1 “We wish to add our voices to the growing number of Boards across the province that are urging government to reach a fair, negotiated settlement prior to school start-up in September,” he wrote. The letter went on to say that if an agreement can’t be reached, the board urges government to seek mediation or if necessary, binding arbitration. “Our Board doesn’t see any long term benefits to a legislated resolution and anticipates considerable damage if agreement is not reached prior to school start-up in September.” Lento ends the letter by saying: “Once again we remind government that education is not a cost to be managed but an investment to be made — in our children, our economy and our future.” Fassbender had a statement waiting when the result was announced Wednesday evening by the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. “As we have consistently made clear, binding arbitration would lead to unacceptable tax increases in

Teachers, parents and students gathered under rainy skies Wednesday for a rally. BC Teachers voted massively in favour of binding arbitration as a way to quickly end the ongoing teachers’ strike. this case,” Fassbender said. “That’s because the two sides remain too far apart on wages and benefits.” BCTF president Jim Iker said the government is obstructing solutions to the

dispute. “This government has said no to arbitration, has tried to stall and block mediation, and has not moved on any monetary proposals in negotiations since June,”

Iker said. Finance Minister Mike de Jong said the union is seeking $315 million per year more than the government is offering, including wages, benefits and a fund to re-

duce class size and increase special needs support. Now in the fourth week of full-scale strike action that began last spring, the BCTF received $8 million Wednesday from the B.C.

Federation of Labour to use as a hardship fund for teachers who have lost more than four weeks’ pay. The B.C. Nurses’ Union put in another $500,000.

Society formed Union members campaign to to bring airshow address income inequality to Cranbrook T R E VO R C R AW LE Y

Continued from page 1

“It’s the halfway point between Abbottsford and Calgary. Abbotsford does a big show. The only big show in Alberta is in Lethbridge, and they run in opposite years. We can grab a lot of crowd from the Okanagan and Kootenay region, we can also grab the people from southern Alberta that want to come down. “The benefit of going on the opposite year from Lethbridge is that we can grab some of that crowd. “The demographic is there.” As to the dates of the airshow itself, Garton said he’s hoping to hold it sometime before the Abbottsford event. “That way we can grab some of the acts that are on the way to Abbottsford, and help keep our costs down. First plan of action is to get a annual general meeting set up.

“We’ve been in the planning stage, with the City of Cranbrook and the Canadian Rockies International Airport,” Garton said. “We want to get local people involved. We want to get people coming out who are interested, who want to be on the board, be on the committee, and get input. What people want to see, what people expect.” Garton is currently conferring with the City and the Airport, and is aiming for dates for the AGM in early October, the 7th or 8th of that month. The AGM would be held out at the airport grounds. Those dates are yet to be confirmed — though the City and Airport are supporting the Cranbrook International Airshow in its endeavours. As soon as the dates are confirmed, they will be reported in the Townsman.

Fair is fair. That’s the slogan for a grassroots campaign that passed through Cranbrook on Tuesday featuring representatives from the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) and the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU). Featuring a bright green passenger bus dubbed the ‘Fairness Express’, the campaign is hoping to start a conversation about the growing income inequality in B.C. and Canada, according to Sussanne Skidmore, an executive vice president with the BCGEU. “The brunt of taxation falls on the middle class and working-class people and the income-gap is growing between the rich and the poor,” said Skidmore. “One of the problems in the province and the country is that public services are funded through taxation and because our tax base is shrinking,

Sharon Bard, Sussanne Skidmore, Janice Morrison and Leila Lolua stopped by Rotary Park on Tuesday afternoon for the Fairness Express campaign, which is currently touring through B.C. our public services are going without and they’re struggling. “…People who are working and paying taxes, they’re seeing that there is a different way to do things, a different way to be taxed and we should be taxed fairly in this country. Everyone should be paying their fair share, and that’s one of the messages.” While taxation policy can often be a murky subject, the goal is to start a conversation at the grassroots level to

raise awareness and propose solutions for income inequality. “We’re just asking people to hear what we have to say and pass it on,” added Skidmore. “Pass it on to a friend, their neighbours, their family and get people to think about how we can do things differently, how we can do them better.” But the conversation just isn’t limited to taxation and the shrinking public sector services, according to Janice Morrison, representing

Health Sciences Association of British Columbia. “We’re also out here to talk about good quality jobs and an industrial strategy. I can remember a time when there were a lot more high-paying jobs in Cranbrook because there was mills operating, there was good private sector jobs as well,” she said. “…We’re not just out here representing our memberships, but in terms of having this discussion. bia, we keep being told all the time, is a wealthy province. We need to be raising the minimum wage. “There’s a number of things we need to do. We need to ensure there are good jobs that that people aren’t having to move to Alberta or move to other jurisdictions.” The bus has been touring through B.C. for the last month, and fellow campaigns are under way across Canada.

Visit the RDEK’s website at www.rdek.bc.ca to view details and get a complete list of acceptable products. Those include everything from shoe polish, hair spray and oven cleaner to pool chemicals, mercury, paint, fungicides and more. He noted that only residential household hazardous waste will be accepted. Paterson said the regional district often gets calls from people who have a cleaning product or an old jar of something in their garage and nowhere to safely get rid of it. “That’s why we’ve organized this event and why we are encouraging people to take advantage of this opportunity,” he said. “We are grateful to have Newalta and the Product Care Association as participating partners and will be taking a wide range of different things.”

The first ever hazardous waste roundup will be happening in Cranbrook on September 21. The roundup is put on by the Regional District of East Kootenay and meant to give residents of the East Kootenay a chance to get rid of unwanted hazardous waste products that may be difficult to dispose of otherwise. The Household Hazardous Waste Round Ups will take place Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cranbrook Transfer station at 2405 22nd Street North. Kevin Paterson, RDEK environmental services manager explained that there are many products that don’t fall under any of the provincial recycling programs, but also don’t really belong in the regular garbage. “Those products often end up sitting in a garage or basement collecting dust,” Paterson said. “These Round Ups are aimed precisely at collecting those products so that they can be safely disposed of or recy-

garden for next year. “With the right varieties and timing you can harvest fresh veggies even when there is snow on the ground and the temperatures are below zero” said Duncan. “As usual, wisdom from local experts will be shared throughout the workshops.” The workshops will also cover seeds: how to save tomatoes and other seeds for next year from this year’s plants, which ones you can eat from your garden, and how to plant them this fall for a jump start next spring. The Edible Gardening workshops are hands-on in the gar-

den, so participants will get practice building a variety of cold frames, constructing a row cover tunnel and fermenting tomatoes to save their seeds. The workshops run from 6:30-8 pm on Tuesday, Sept. 16, in Kimberley at Wildsight’s Open Gate Garden on Rotary Drive and in Cranbrook on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 6:30-8 p.m. at CFAC’s Public Produce Garden on 18th Avenue North between 6th and 8th Streets. The workshop cost is $10 with a work trade option available and registration is online at Wildsight.ca/Garden or by calling 250-427-7981.

Dog and deer do’s and don’t’s Deer and dogs can coexist safely in our communities, if we follow a few basics Sonja Seher

When polled in early 2014 for Cranbrook’s Urban Deer Residents Survey, respondents reported aggression towards pets as a top concern. Deer and dogs can coexist safely in our communities, but only if we as dog-owners understand and adhere to a few key practices when out with our pets. No. 1. Avoid Problem Areas You may have seen warnings at trailheads or heard from your neighbours about local does guarding fawns or aggressive rutting bucks. Should there be any indication a wild animal showing aggressive behaviours is present in an area you are recreating in, please leave the area and choose another place for you and your dog to enjoy. Return at a time when there isn’t such risk to a wildlife encounter: it’s just not worth it. No. 2. Leash Your Pets Dogs must be under your control at all times, be it on the sidewalk or on the trail. Please remember that the City of Cranbrook prohibits and impounds dogs considered to be at large (off-leash and out of your control) when they are not on your property. No. 3. Do not allow your pets to harass deer (or any wild animal) Deer are protected under the Pro-

vincial Wildlife Act from harassment by domestic pets. Conservation officers are permitted to take measures to control dogs that are at large and harassing wildlife. Beyond the legal implications, in harassing a wild animal, your dog may be creating or escalating a conflict that leads you into the path of danger. Ensure your personal safety by not allowing your pet to aggravate wildlife. No. 4. If the deer shows interest, try and create space between you and the animal If you and your dog come across a deer that is reluctant to leave an area:

give the animal a wide berth as you move around it, maintain control of your dog on leash, and ensure the deer has a clear escape route should it choose to run. No. 5. If the deer attacks, let the leash go In most aggressive deer encounters with dogs and dog owners, the deer have focused their aggression on the dog, not the person. By creating separation between you and your dog, you allow the dog to use its own energetic resources to escape an attack. If the deer sees your dog as a threat, by dropping the leash you eliminate that connection between you and your dog and divert the attention away from yourself. In the event of an attack: remain upright, protect your head with your arms, and fight back with a walking stick or whatever you have at hand. When the attack stops, seek shelter behind any large object that can serve as a barrier between you and the deer. Thank you again for helping to keep wildlife wild and our communities safe. For more on safely recreating around wildlife, visit www.wildsafebc.com. Should you encounter an aggressive deer or see other wildlife activity of concern, don’t hesitate to report it through the Conservation Officers Service 24-hour reporting line 1-877-952-7277.

he time has come for me to come out of the closet and confess. It is my duty to alert my faithful — albeit naïve — readers as to my true nature. My closest friends and my family have already found me out and I only hope that our shattered relationships can survive. I am not positive that I can, not after I announce that I am a practicing … Wild flower admirer. It’s true. That doesn’t mean that I mince about with a limp wrist; I’ve merely taken an interest in wild flowers. I get excited in spring when I know that I’ll be able to see some wild buttercups on Eager Hill. They give me a thrill each year. When I come upon a hillside smothered in bright yellow balsam root, I feel excitement. When I emerge from a tangle of slide alder and discover a sunny bank strewn with Indian paint brush, like my friend Paul, I am likely to exclaim, “Wow!” I know virtually nothing at all about the biology of flowers. I failed that class at school but I think I know petals, then, when I check, they turn out to be sepals.

This must have been a misprint in my Flowers of the Rockies book. Stamens are the male parts of flowers, I learned, and then it gets personal. I’d rather stand back and admire... In my youth, apart from the huge bunches of bluebells I used to collect for Mum, I didn’t acknowledge flowers. If I did see them, I didn’t demean myself by noticing them. Later, as I thrashed about in the mountains, trying to be a famous rock-gymnast, I began to take note of fossils Peter and various formations of That was all right Warland geology. for a guy. When we first came to the East Kootenay, our male friends were all hunters, so we hunted; it seemed to be the natural thing to do: a male necessity. However, hunting is in the Fall and that’s when most of the wild flowers have given up the ghost for the year. Spring and summer are different. On our way up to the rocks near Lumberton, we could not ignore the Calypso Slippers that peered at us beneath the trees and, way up in Boulder Creek, I can still recall discovering those waxy pyrolas, almost hidden under fallen trees. But flowers are female things and they sneak up on a fellow, the way women do. Like Rita. We were invited to her house one eve-

ning and she showed us her collection of colour slides. They were all of wild-flowers and the pictures grabbed me. Soon I was avidly making my own collection of pictures until I realized that it was difficult to do well and that I should have started years before. I was hooked though. Even being scorned by my neighbours as I tried to photograph the myriad dandelions in my lawn didn’t deter me. Then Wendy rolled up from England. She was a wild flower enthusiast from Europe and knew well all the blossoms of the Alps and Pyrenees. She recognized every flower we showed her and was ecstatic at the extravagant display nature put on as we traversed the ridge between the Bear Lakes. She knew different names for the flowers but then, neither of us knew the Latin names that biologists have given them. My ancient face wrinkles into a grin when I recall friend Axel having a fit when we were up on Lakit Mountain. He suddenly leaped to his feet and gambolled like a drunken puppet down the hillside warbling ‘The hills are alive with the sound of music’ and then fell flat on his face. According to George, I trotted down to Axel and helped him to his feet, muttering, “Oh, look! You’ve crushed some eriogonum,” then tidied the damaged flowers. This, of course, is completely untrue, but I still remember the glorious late summer orange blossoms on the plants.

week. “When did it become a crime for an American citizen to own a book?” The state attorney “sets himself up as censor to tell 250,000 people of Oklahoma County what they can read and what they cannot read.” Under subpoena, the City Librarian concurred that not only did they have the majority of these titles at the library, but so did every other public and academic library in the state. A college student also testified for the defence, supplying a list of books he found at the University of Oklahoma’s Library, which included “eight by Karl Marx, six by Lenin, two by Engels, two by Stalin, and 250 on socialism and communism.” Final arguments for the defence were heard on June 10th, where Croom reminded the jury that “never in the United States has there been any prosecution for the possession of books.” He also pointed to the Thomas Jefferson quote which hung above the courthouse door: “Equal and exact justice to all men, of whatever state or persuasion, religious, or political.” The jury barely deliberated before rendering their verdict. Bob and Ina Wood, Elia Jaffe and Alan Shaw were found guilty on all charges. Each was sentenced to 10 years in a penitentiary and fined 5,000 dollars. And that was that—except for a small editorial in a Tulsa newspaper, which asked “Just what kind of insanity is this?” We will look at that answer next week. Salvation: So much more than spiritual

I

n the last few weeks, a number of people have asked me how I understand the whole concept of salvation, of “being saved.” Church folk like to throw that word throw around a lot. “Have you been saved?” has become part of the jargon of the church. The trouble with jargon is that too often we stop asking what it means. An online dictionary defines it this way: “salvation: noun (Christianity) the act of delivering from sin or saving from evil; 2: a means of preserving from harm or unpleasantness.” Most Christians in North America agree with that definition. Salvation has to do with what happens to us after we die. On the cross, Jesus died and saved us from our sins, giving us a ticket to heaven after we have died. The trouble with that understanding is that it’s too reductionistic. It turns Christianity into what Marcus Borg calls a “religion of requirements”. If we live the right way, if we believe, if we “accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour”, then we will get to go to eternal bliss. In the Bible, however, salvation is a much larger and richer concept than that. Salvation is not about the afterlife. Salvation is something that happens in this world. The Greek word for salvation (the language of the New Testament) is the same word which is ordinarily used for “health” or “wholeness”. To be saved is to be healed, to be made whole. And that happens here, in this world, in this time, in this life. Salvation isn’t just about getting the prize at the end of life. Salvation is a pro-

cess in which we are constantly being transformed in an ongoing encounter with God. It is a process of renewal and transformation. We take a journey with God, in which we are being made whole, in which we are being healed, in which we are being transformed. The New Testament uses many different images for salvation. The Gospel of John tells us Jesus is the light of the world. In that sense, Rev. Yme salvation is about light shinWoensdregt ing in the darkness of our world, so that we can see reality through the lens of God’s love. Another image used by John is to Jesus as the bread of life or living water. Salvation is about satisfying our deepest hungers. Jesus fills us and nourishes us and quenches our deepest thirsts in ways that consumerism and materialism never can. These images, and others, are metaphors for salvation. As we receive God’s goodness, we are being made whole. We receive life in all its fullness. The other problem for me with the limited understanding of salvation is that it’s so individualistic. It’s about what happens to me after I die. But Biblical faith is never private. In the Bible, salvation is intensely social and communal. The Old Testament tells the story of the creation of a nation, a new people, a community. Israel’s mission is to live together as people of God in the world. In the nation, salvation is about life together. It is about peace and justice, not only within the community, but beyond it as well. The prophet Isaiah talks about Israel being “given as a light to the nations, that God’s salvation may reach to the end of the

earth.” The prophet understood God’s purpose for the world to be one where all people lived together in justice and peace and hope. The purpose of life was for healing and wholeness, not separation and brokenness. In the same way, the New Testament continues this social thrust. Jesus’ main message in the gospels is the “kingdom of God”. By definition, the good news is about community. Paul went about the ancient world, setting up communities where people could learn to live together in ways of justice and wholeness. He talked about the church as a body, a community, with many members. Salvation is God at work in our lives. We need to respond to God’s work in order for wholeness to be made real in us. Archbishop Desmond Tutu quoted Augustine in a lecture some years ago when he said, “God without us will not, as we without God cannot.” Without us, without our response, God will not heal our lives. We must participate in God’s project of reclaiming the world. If Jesus is bread to feed our deepest hungers, then we must take and eat. If Jesus is light in the darkness, we must open our eyes and see. If Jesus leads us home, we must follow. Salvation is the transformation of a person and a community in an ongoing encounter with God. It is about being open to the healing power of God’s love for ourselves as individuals, and for ourselves in community. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor of Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Crowsnest conclusion Kootenay Ice wrap up WHL pre-season with Thunder Challenge in Blairmore Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

With eight players off at NHL camps, the Kootenay Ice will look to a younger squad during WHL exhibition play this weekend. The Ice wrap up the 2014 WHL pre-season with the sixth annual Thunder Challenge in the Crowsnest Pass, beginning tonight at 7 p.m. when they meet the Lethbridge Hurricanes in Blairmore, Alta. After three consecutive losses in Kennewick, Wa. last weekend -- including an 8-2 thrashing at the hands of the Everett Silvertips -- head coach Ryan McGill said he expected his squad to compete harder in individual battles throughout practice this week and in the final two games of the pre-season. “Monday and Tuesday, practices were based around the compete and learning what it takes [to play in this league],” said assistant coach Jay Henderson Thursday night. “Obviously they got a good

taste of that in exhibition games [in Kennewick] but now they’ve got to learn and make it a consistent thing…They did a good job this week and they worked hard.” While Tim Bozon, Sam Reinhart and Mackenzie Skapski have all been missing since the start of camp as they prepared for NHL auditions, five more members of the Ice departed this week as they chase big league dreams. Forwards Jaedon Descheneau, Jon Martin and Luke Philp, along with defencemen Tanner Faith and Rinat Valiev jettisoned from Cranbrook to each of their respective NHL destinations Wednesday evening. Philp, Descheneau and Martin represent the team’s top three scorers through three pre-season games. Their absence leaves ample opportunity for the youngsters battling to make the club. “As we move along in exhibition season, obviously for the young kids it’s new and playing in

the Western League is different for them,” Henderson said. “They get to feel the process that first weekend. “Going back to last year, our second weekend is much better -higher tempo of course -- and they’ve had a little bit of time to learn our systems and that compete factor.” Up front, 17-year-old Austin Wellsby has tallied one goal in two games, while 16-yearold Vince Loschiavo registered one assist during one game on the team’s trip to Kennewick. After a strong showing through training camp and intrasquad play, former 2013 first-round bantam selection Jared Legien has been held scoreless in three pre-season contests. The curious name that has cruised under the radar is 16-year-old River Beattie. The native of Sherwood Park, Alta. has registered an even rating through three exhibition losses. Beattie was drafted by the Ice in the sixth round of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.

Mark O’Shaughnessy, Cale Fleury and Bryan Allbee continue to slug away in search of employment on the backend. Fleury and Allbee both sit with a minus-four rating, while O’Shaughnessy heads up the trio with a plus-1 mark to go with one assist. “They’re still learning,” Henderson said of the trio. “It’s about details. All three of them bring something different to our team. “But at the end of the day, everyone is still battling it out right now. Just because you’re a veteran, doesn’t mean you’re going to make the club.” The veterans Henderson alludes to consist of Troy Murray, Jordan Steenbergen, Tanner Faith, Tyler King and Rinat Valiev. The goaltending battle behind Wyatt Hoflin continues as Keelan Williams and Jayden Sittler vie for the backup position. “They’re both in tough,” Henderson said. “But they’ve shown well, so it’s going to be inter-

According to Henderson, the expectation is that Sittler and Williams will share the puck-stopping duties Friday against Lethbridge while Wyatt Hoflin will see 60 minutes of

crease time Sunday afternoon against the Calgary Hitmen. After tonight’s dustup with the Hurricanes, the Ice close out the Thunder Challenge Sunday at 2 p.m. when they meet the Calgary Hitmen in Blairmore. The Ice have 22 players in camp following the NHL departures of Descheneau, Martin, Philp, Faith and Valiev. Whether those five return will impact when

and what roster decisions are made following the conclusion of the pre-season. “We’re focused on the weekend at this point,” Henderson said. “Hopefully everyone shows well. We want those tough decisions, that’s what training camp is for.” The Ice open the 2014-15 WHL regular season Friday, Sept. 19 in Red Deer.

KIJHL Season Preview: Part Two A look into the Kootenay Conference

Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The 2014 KIJHL regular season begins today with five games on the slate across the league. The Beaver Valley Nitehawks return to defend their KIJHL and

Keystone Cup championships in 2014-15, but that won’t be a task easily achieved. The Kamloops Storm took home the 2013-14 KIJHL and Okanagan/ Shuswap Conference regular season titles with a record of 42-9-0-1,

good for 85 points. The Nelson Leafs were tops in the Kootenay Conference, going 38-9-1-4 and collecting 81 points. Today, we take a look at the KIJHL’s Kootenay Conference. All rosters detailed here on in are current as of Sept. 11. With many Junior A clubs across Western Canada still wrapping up training camps and pre-season, there will be an inevitable trickle-down effect that could see many more players return to the KIJHL club they spent the 2013-14 season with. So while accurate for now, these roster details stand to change in the coming weeks.

Eddie Mountain Division:

CRESTON VALLEY THUNDER CATS 2013-14: 39-11-1-1 (80 pts; 1st in division) Post-season: Lost in third round to Beaver Valley (4-1) Season opener: Sept. 13 at Kimberley The Creston Valley Thunder Cats will be a very different team this season from the one that claimed the Eddie Mountain Division crown in 2013-14. Gone are the team’s top three scorers from last season as forwards Jesse Collins, Brandon Formosa and Trevor Hanna all aged out.

“We’re going to be a different group playing a different style than last year’s team,” said Thunder Cats new head coach/general manager Jeff Dubois. “We’ve lost a great deal of skill all over the ice. “That being said, I’m very happy with how our camp and pre-season has progressed. I’m pleased by the high standard that our veterans are setting for a very promising group of rookies. We have have enough skill to compete on a nightly basis but our overall success will be determined by how hard we’re willing to compete in a very tough division.” Between the pipes, Brock Lefebvre returns to backstop Creston after posting a record of 18-4-1 with a 2.81 GAA and 0.910 SP in 2013-14.

KIMBERLEY DYNAMITERS 2013-14: 29-21-2-0 (60 pts; 2nd in division) Post-season: Lost in second round to Creston Valley (4-3) Season opener: Sept. 13 vs. Creston Valley The Dynamiters stand poised to steal the Eddie Mountain Division crown from the Creston Valley Thunder Cats in 2014-15. With a strong group of returning veterans including Jason Richter,

Jared Marchi and Tyson Klingspohn, the Nitros won’t be short on speed or skill in 2014-15. While the aforementioned returners are known across the KIJHL, the Dynamiters biggest weapon could lie within power forward and relative unknown Keenan Haase. The Californian is about to embark on his first season of Canadian hockey. Standing 6-foot2 and possessing a heavy shot, the big man is a lethal combination of size and skill. With returning netminder Tyson Brouwer between the pipes, there is no reason this team can’t make a strong push for the division title. The return of Coy Prevost and Jordan Roy from their respective WHL tryouts won’t hurt head coach Jerry Bancks either.

FERNIE GHOSTRIDERS 2013-14: 24-22-0-6 (54 pts; third in division) Post-season: Lost in first round to Kimberley (4-1) Season opener: Sept. 13 at Columbia Valley The Ghostriders welcomed back a familiar face during the 2014 off-season after forward Derek Georgopolous was acquired from the Golden Rockets in exchange for cash considerations. Georgopolous last suited up for the Ghostriders in 2012-13, tallying 22 goals and 38 points in 50 games. The Cranbrook native spent the 2013-14 campaign in the West Kootenay with the Castlegar Rebels, registering 12 goals and 34 points in 43 games. The team also made a change behind the bench as Craig Mohr replaces Dale Hladun as head coach/general manager. Jeff Orser and Brandon Butler will batten down the hatches between the pipes for Fernie this season. The duo represent yet another new entity for the organization in 2014-15. Orser spent the 2013-14 campaign with the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Calgary Mustangs while Butler rounded out his midget days with the Calgary Buffaloes. Dylan Robertson will sport the captaincy in his fourth full season with the Ghostriders. The 6-foot-3 forward has amassed 368 minutes in penalties along with 27 goals and 70 points through 136 games with the Ghostriders.

COLUMBIA VALLEY ROCKIES

2013-14: 13-28-3-8 (37 pts; fourth in division) Post-season: Lost in first round to Creston Valley (4-0) Season opener: Sept. 13 vs. Fernie With 2013-14 leading scorer Ryan Henderson aging out, the door is wide open for Doan Smith to take over the reigns of the offence in Invermere. The 19-yearold native of Cessford, Alta. posted 18 goals and 33 points in 45 games with the Rockies last season. In the blue paint, Brody Nelson returns to stop pucks for the Rockies. The 18-year-old hometown product had a tough go in 2013-14, going 6-16-3 with a 4.25 GAA and 0.888 SP. At 6-foot-1, the big-bodied netminder will be the backbone of a Rockies squad that hopes to edge its way up the Eddie Mountain Division standings in 2014-15.

GOLDEN ROCKETS 2013-14: 15-32-1-4 (35 pts; fifth in division) Post-season: Failed to qualify Season opener: Sept. 12 at Princeton A couple of key cogs from the Rockets blueline aged out following the 2013-14 season, including captain Michael Anderson. To take over the leadership role left behind by Anderson, the Rockets turn to Daniel Dahlin in 2014-15. The 20-year-old Anderson will wear the ‘C’ for Golden this season as he closes out a KIJHL career that has seen him dress for 116 games in his hometown colours. The 6-foot-4 native of Golden has amassed 21 points over his three seasons in the KIJHL. Forward Ian Desrosier will look to improve upon his offensive totals in 2014-15. Another local kid, Desrosier enters his third full season with the Rockets after putting up 14 goals and 28 points in 49 games last season. In addition to Dahlin, the Rockets could get a solid year out of rookie blueliner Alex Astasiewicz. The Salmon Arm native will be 15 when puck drops on

Friday, September 12, 2014

Sports opening night, turning 16 Oct. 1. As exciting as it could be to add a youngster of Astasiewicz’s calibre, the 6-foot defenceman might not be around for an extended KIJHL career after the Everett Silvertips selected him in the third round of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.

Neil Murdoch Division:

NELSON LEAFS 2013-14: 38-9-1-4 (81 pts; first in division) Post-season: Lost in second round to Beaver Valley Season opener: Sept. 12 vs. Beaver Valley (4-2) After the off-season the Nelson Leafs had, who knows what to expect? Upon taking the Neil Murdoch Division crown in 2013-14, head coach/general manager Frank Maida left the Leafs to focus on other commitments. He was quickly replaced by Matt Hughes. Almost as quickly as Hughes was hired, he blew away in the wind, resigning from his post in late July before ever stepping behind the bench. Enter David McLellan. A native of Surrey, B.C., McLellan came with a long resume that features four seasons as head coach of the BCHL’s Burnaby Express. With some coaching stability in place, the focus now shifts to hockey. The team will need to learn what life is like without high-flying offensive weapons Jamie Vlanich and Travis Wellman, who both aged out following the 2013-14 season. The duo combined for 85 goals and 184 points last season. Vlanich claimed the KIJHL scoring title with 97 points while Wellman was the only 50goal scorer in the league last season.

BEAVER VALLEY NITEHAWKS 2013-14: 38-10-1-3

(80 pts; second in division) Post-season: KIJHL champions Season opener: Sept. 12 at Nelson The top two teams in the Neil Murdoch Division will go head-tohead to start the season and the Nitehawks don’t project to be any easier of a squad come 201415. Though last season’s leading scorer Ryan Edwards (31 goals, 84 points) aged out, the team bolstered its forward ranks with the acquisition of Braydon Horcoff from the Campbell River Storm of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. The 20-year-old Prince Rupert native posted five goals and 27 points in 27 games with the Storm in 2013-14. He is familiar with the KIJHL as well, having made a run to the Cyclone Taylor Cup with the Castlegar Rebels in 2012-13. On the blueline, the Nitehawks lost veteran Archie McKinnon who also aged out following the 2013-14 season. But fear not, head coach/ general manager Terry Jones found a replacement in Andrew Miller. The Trail native spent 2013-14 with the Kimberley Dynamiters After expressing an interest in

playing his 20-year-old season closer to home, the Nitros and Nitehawks struck a deal to send the veteran defenceman west. In net, Keystone Cup MVP Brett Clark looks to have graduated to the BCHL’s Trail Smoke Eaters. Carson Schamerhorn was a 17-year-old affiliate player for the squad last season and looks to fill the void. He dressed in two games during the team’s pursuit of the Keystone Cup, registering a 0.50 GAA and 0.985 SP.

CASTLEGAR REBELS 2013-14: 22-25-2-3 (49 its; third in division) Post-season: Lost in first round to Beaver Valley (4-0) Season opener: Sept. 13 at Nelson Leading scorer Connor Beauchemin aged out after producing 30 goals and 56 points for the Rebels in 2013-14. The team also lost steady defenceman Hunter Jenerou who turned 21 in June. Austin Wells projects to start the season as the

team’s new number one goaltender. The 19-yearold native of Calgary appeared in 29 games for the Fernie Ghostriders in 2013-14, going 13-130 with a 3.31 GAA and 0.895 SP. The Rebels project to be a young team in 2014-15. With a powerful Nitehawks squad returning to the Neil Murdoch Division, it might be tough slugging to get up and out of the mid-

dle of the pack. SPOKANE BRAVES 2013-14: 22-26-0-4 (48 pts; fourth in division) Post-season: Lost in first round to Nelson (4-2) Season opener: Sept. 13 at Grand Forks The KIJHL’s only American team lost leading scorer Justin Bonanno (28 goals, 55 points) and defenceman Alex Peltram to age. Apart from that, last year’s team remains eligible to return. A veteran-laden Braves could make a push to escape the first round of the post-season for the first time

Page 9

since 2009-10 when Spokane lost to the Nelson Leafs in round two.

GRAND FORKS BORDER BRUINS 2013-14: 16-32-2-2 (36 pts; fifth in division) Post-season: Failed to qualify Season opener: Sept. 12 vs. 100 Mile House

After finishing the 2013-14 campaign in the basement of the Neil Murdoch Division, there truly is nowhere to go but up for the Border Bruins. Forward Michael Rand tallied 19 goals and 41 points for Grand Forks in 2013-14. He returns this season along with Tucker Brown (28 points). The Border Bruins will roll with two KIJHL rookies in net to start the season. Kiernan Matsuba, an 18-year-old from Spruce Grove, Alta. joins Jacob Mullen of Coeur D’Alene between the pipes. Mullen represents a hulking presence at 6-foot-4 and could stand to stop a lot of pucks in 2014-15.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You will want to free up some extra time just for you. You’ll remain levelheaded, even though you have a very difficult decision to make. You might want to discuss your choice with several other people for feedback. Tonight: Get physical -- go to the gym, or go dancing. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) No one dares question your ideas or your appeal. You know where you are heading. You

have a sense of direction that is unique, and you possess a special type of creativity. News from a distance is likely to put a smile on your face. Tonight: Ever playful. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Get down to the basics, and understand that you will need to rebuild certain areas of your life. An older friend or relative could be unintentionally demanding and not realize what you are going through. Ask for consideration and space, if need be. Tonight: Invite friends over. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Listen to news before changing plans. You could be more in limbo than you might have thought possible. Perhaps you need to work through an issue and return someone’s call. Choose to make plans that allow you to share some of your dilemma. Tonight: Love the moment. BORN TODAY Actor Maurice Chevalier (1888), Olympic athlete Jesse Owens (1913), publisher Alfred A. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am a 21-year-old college student. I have found someone I am really close to and would love to have a relationship with. The problem is, she is already in a relationship with someone else. We worked together for two years and became best friends. Unfortunately, she left the job to focus on school. We still talk, and I always ask myself whether I should tell her how I truly feel and risk tarnishing the friendship. Should I just be happy the way things are? -- Trouble in the Ville Dear Trouble: It is bad form to go after someone who is already attached. So our recommendation is to leave things alone and enjoy the friendship. However, should she break up with her boyfriend, that would be an OK time to express your feelings. You already understand that she may not feel the same way and the friendship could suffer as a result, but if you are both unattached, you may as well give it a try. You never know. Dear Annie: I am a senior citizen, and I have a problem with being touched. Why do people think they can greet me with a hug? Smokers ask whether you mind if they smoke, so why can’t huggers ask before hugging? I don’t mean to sound rude, but what can I do about this? -- Touchy Senior Citizen Dear Touchy: A great many people do not like to be hugged, especially by vague acquaintances. When you see someone approaching with arms out, it’s perfectly OK to take a step back, put your hand out and say politely, “Sorry. I’m not a hugger. But it’s nice to see you.” As people get to know you, they will respect your preference automatically. Please be patient. Dear Annie: I am writing in regard to the letter from “California Grandma.” Grandma was displeased with the conduct of her 13-year-old granddaughter, who just graduated middle school and didn’t invite her to the graduation. Grandma wanted to know whether she could revoke an offer she made to pay the girl $5,000 if she graduated high school with all B’s or better. Your response, which began with, “It’s your money. You can do whatever you like with it,” may be legally incorrect. Grandma made an offer, and if the granddaughter accepted the offer, a valid contract was created at that moment, and Grandma can no longer revoke it. If granddaughter performs, Grandma is obligated to pay her. If she doesn’t pay up, the granddaughter can sue for breach of contract. The fact that it may have been an oral contract is not the issue. In this type of scenario, oral contracts are binding. Nor is the fact that this is a minor child an issue. Minors may enter into contracts, and the right of revocation rests with the minor, not the adult. Normally with these types of contracts, it would be Grandma’s word against the granddaughter’s. But Grandma just admitted making the offer in the newspaper, so the contract exists. The moral of the story is, be careful what you promise the kids. It can have binding legal ramifications. It’s a good thing Grandma didn’t promise her a car. -- Florida Lawyer Dear Florida: What a world. Fortunately for Grandma, letters in our column are anonymous, and there are dozens, if not thousands, of grandparents who make such promises to their grandchildren. So it’s still Grandma’s word against the granddaughter’s that this letter came from her. Nonetheless, we don’t believe Grandma should rescind the offer. It was for grades, not behavior, and she should keep her word. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. May 1935 - September 2012 It just seems like yesterday that I whispered in your ear, “So long for now sweetheart we will meet again soon” As I remember those words today I also remember the one person I have loved for an eternity, and that is you my darling. They say as time goes by the hurt of missing you gets easier. I don’t ever want the hurt to get easier because along with the hurt comes the wonderful memories of the life we shared together. Those memories of playing and laughing with our grandchildren, playing and laughing together, these memories will stay with me forever. Thank you my darling for the wonderful memories you have left behind for me. I will always love you Sadly missed by beloved Wife Ena; Children - Marianne, Cathy, Robbie, Kathy and Son-In Law Barry Bauer; Grandchildren - Ryan, Brennon, Aaron, Lily, Marshall, Chris and Evan

So many things have happened, Since you were called away. So many things to share iwith you, Had you been left to stay. Every day in some small way, Though absent, you are forever near, Still missed, loved and always dear. Forever loving you Linda, Chris, Kara & Families

Gertie was born on January 3, 1930 in St. Boswells, Saskatchewan. After many years of farming, Ivan and Gertie moved to Cranbrook, BC in 1968 and bought the Hi-a-watha Motel. Gertie worked endless hours cooking plenty of delicious home cooked meals and baked hundreds of pies over the years. She was a dedicated member of the Ladies Auxiliary in the Fraternal Order of Eagles, serving 2 terms as their Madam President. Gertie and Ivan spent many weekends camping with “Eagles on Wheels” and cooking for functions in the Hall. In her later years, she enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles. In 2008 Gertie moved to the F.W. Green Home and resided there until her passing. Special thanks to the staff at the F. W. Green Memorial Home for their care throughout our mom’s stay. Obituary Elsie Anna Hammond Elsie Hammond (nee Biensch), 94, of Kimberley/ Cranbrook BC passed away Saturday Sept. 6. Elsie was born in Unity Sk. on January 15, 1920, the second of 8 kids to parents Gottlieb and Gretchen. Her early years on the mixed farm, homesteaded by her folks near Artland Sk., were busy ones with a big family and the farm – lots of work, laughter, tears, chores, community, music, dance, sports, and some pretty hard times during the depression of the 1930s. She used to laugh mischievously when telling about the tomato patch in the huge garden and her salt shaker hidden nearby! – she loved gardening. As a graduate RN in the early 1940s, her adventurous spirit took her off nursing to Salmon Arm, Revelstoke, Duncan, Yellowknife, and Wetaskiwin. While in the far north, she met her future husband Bob, a young mining engineer/prospector/adventurer who whooshed her off her feet and they were married in Wetaskiwin on Sept. 26, 1946 (67 years ago). Settling in Kimberley BC, they had 2 kids – Rick in 1947 and Sally in 1948. Shortly after, the Hammonds moved north to a remote mine about 90 km NE of Juneau, Alaska at Tulsequah BC. Five years later, the family returned to Kimberley for many happy and fun years filled with outdoor activities especially skiing, camping, and again Elsie and her green thumb tackled building and planting the garden and yard. The family always knew spring had arrived when the odorifus aroma of manure wafted through the air – a new load on the garden and the winters compost turned! In the late 1960s, as empty nesters, Elsie and Bob spent over 20 years in the West Kootenays of BC between Riondel and Tadanac (Trail) where they spent many active retirement years, camping, hiking, and gardening in the summers and both alpine and x-country skiing in the mild winters. Through the years, Elsie utilized her nursing skills to train Candy Stripers in hospitals and volunteered at the Red Cross Blood Donor Clinics, Well Womens Clinic, and Girl Guide camps. She taught Adult Education Cooking classes and hundreds of people learned how to make tasty hearty soups and her famous homemade bread – the class called “How to make 150% whole grain bread”. An appreciation of Nature and its cycles was an integrated part of her very being and she always tried to interest and educate others to feel the same wonder and amazement. When out walking, she was rarely without binoculars, magnifying glass, and a bag to pick up garbage, the bird and flower books not far off. In her neighbourhoods, the kids knew her as “the Bird Lady” who would help identify the live ones and examine the lifeless they brought to her. We all learned to observe the amazing views and details of nature, the trees, mountains, plants, birds, animals, insects, and the clouds. Elsie and Bob moved back to Kimberley in 1990 where Rick, wife Daphne, and their sons Dana (10) and Benson (1) relocated soon after. Daughter Sal was fairly close by in the Slocan Valley during the summers. Elsie’s two grandsons were now one of her main focuses. She spent many many happy hours traipsing through the woods sharing her love, passion, and knowledge of nature with them. Elsies wonderful lifelong outlook of -- ‘make the best of it’ went hand in hand with one of her favorite sayings --“I was born under a lucky star”. This held true even during the past few years with dementia, always maintaining her cheerful, playful, and curious nature. Her surviving immediate family – husband Bob in Cranbrook, son Rick & wife Daphne in Kimberley, grandsons Dana in Whitehorse and Benson in Calgary, daughter Sally & husband Randy in Slocan Valley, granddaughter Karen & great grandson Dylan in Ottawa, brother Roy and wife Joan in Calgary, brother Bob and wife Marg in Artland, brother Harold in White Rock. Should you wish, a donation to the Kootenay Naturalists at www. bcnature.ca website would be welcomed. Please include on it “in memory of Elsie Hammond” and they will forward it directly to the Kootenay Naturalists.

Only with a daily paper are you able to choose to do an ad and run with it in two days, and reach a sizable portion of the population, in a fairly mass, fairly broad and fairly fast way. Water-living 50-foot dinosaur unveiled Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Picture the fearsome movie creatures of “Jurassic Park’’ crossed with the shark from “Jaws.’’ Then super-size to the biggest predator

ever to roam Earth. Now add a crocodile snout as big as a person and feet like a duck’s. The result gives one some idea of a bizarre dinosaur scientists have just unveiled.

University of Chicago said it’s so weird that studying it was like working on an extraterrestrial. The 50-foot (15 metre)-long predator is the only known dinosaur to live much of its life in the water. Scientists had some bones from the beast already, but the new skeleton discovery forced a major rethinking of what it looked like some 95 million years ago. The result was described Thursday in the journal Science.

A giant fossil, unearthed in the Sahara desert, has given scientists an unprecedented look at the largest-known carnivorous dinosaur: Spinosaurus. The 95-million-yearold remains confirm a long-held theory: that this is the first-known swimming dinosaur. Scientists say the beast had flat, paddle-like feet and nostrils on top of its crocodilian head that would allow it to submerge with ease. Lead discoverer Nizar Ibrahim of the

LAST CHANCE Archaeologists excavating a massive burial mound in northern Greece have uncovered this female figurine, one of a pair sculpted from marble.

Archaeologists unveil female statues in huge ancient tomb in Greece Associated Press

ATHENS — Archaeologists slowly digging through a huge 2,300-year-old tomb in northern Greece have uncovered two life-sized marble female statues flanking the entrance to one of three underground chambers. A Culture Ministry statement says the statues show ``exceptional artistic quality.’’ Their upper sections were discovered last week, but their bodies — in semi-transparent robes — emerged after part of a blocking wall was re-

moved Thursday. The excavation, on a hillock near ancient Amphipolis, 600 kilometres (370 miles) north of Athens, has gripped Greece for a month, since Prime Minister Antonis Samaras visited it and pre-empted archaeologists by releasing details on the findings. A media frenzy ensued amid speculation that the tomb may contain buried riches and the remains of an eminent figure. Less than half the tomb has been explored so far.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA’s Curiosity rover is about to conduct some serious scientific drilling at Mars. The space agency announced Thursday that the rover has reached the base of Mount Sharp, its destination since landing two years ago. Officials say drilling could begin as early as next week at an outcrop of rocks called Pahrump Hills. Mount Sharp, locat-

ed in ancient Gale Crater, rises nearly 3 1/2 miles (6 kilometres). A scientific review panel has criticized the Curiosity team for an extended mission that involves too much driving and too little sampling. On Thursday, project scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology promised ``we are going to do a lot more drilling’’ now that the six-wheel Curiosity is at Mount Sharp.
