Mayor Mary Sjostrom seeking third term AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter With her husband by her side and supporters surrounding her Mayor Mary Sjostrom announced Wednesday she’s going for a third term. “I am very proud of the accomplishments of city council in the past few years,” she said. “The successful referendum for a new arena is a huge step forward towards renewal of our community. “Everyone will enjoy watching this new recreation facility be constructed in the next year and look forward to the grand opening in 2016.” Sjostrom also spoke to the success of the West Quesnel Land Stability Program, alluding to “great news” by the end of the month. Sjostrom went on to highlight the completion of the Our Quesnel Sustainability Plan, a document to guide the city and its elected officials through the next 25 years to lobby government and implement projects outlined in the document. “As a forest dependent community timber allocation is at the forefront and I’m working closely with the Ministry of Forests to insure sustainability for our city and all our stakeholders large and small,” Sjostrom said. “I’m a team player who has always put our community first. “My campaign slogan Bringing Our Community Together describes my approach to being the mayor and I will always consider the needs of our community our highest priority. “I will focus on my duties as mayor for the rest of this term and continue to represent the needs of our citizens. “I plan to share more of my vision for a vibrant, sustainable Quesnel next month after everyone enjoys the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.” Sjostrom again thanked her colleagues and noted continued progress through the years while dealing with a community in transition. “It’s about progress, not promises,” she said, ending her announcement with a quote from Henry Ford: Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success. Municipal elections are Nov. 15.
